on_o a_o sudden_a and_o tell_v he_o thou_o shall_v live_v when_o his_o neck_n be_v on_o the_o block_n and_o he_o expect_v nothing_o but_o death_n this_o cause_v a_o man_n to_o love_n god_n much_o and_o to_o prize_n christ_n and_o this_o make_a saint_n paul_n also_o to_o love_n christ_n so_o much_o that_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n constrain_v he_o because_o i_o be_v a_o persecuter_n and_o a_o when_o a_o man_n be_v content_a with_o the_o mean_a service_n and_o the_o least_o wage_n to_o want_v wealth_n and_o credit_n and_o gift_n as_o jacob_n be_v true_o humble_v i_o be_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o thy_o mercy_n whereas_o a_o other_o man_n that_o be_v not_o humble_v when_o he_o look_v upon_o himself_o and_o god_n mercy_n he_o enjoy_v he_o think_v high_o of_o himself_o think_v himself_o too_o big_a for_o they_o and_o that_o the_o disproportion_n be_v rather_o on_o his_o side_n whereas_o jacob_n though_o he_o then_o have_v many_o mercy_n yet_o say_v take_v the_o least_o mercy_n and_o lay_v it_o in_o one_o scale_n and_o myself_o in_o a_o other_o and_o i_o be_o too_o light_a for_o it_o less_o than_o it_o and_o it_o too_o much_o for_o i_o it_o be_v exercise_v in_o bear_v cross_n one_o that_o be_v cross_n true_o humble_v still_o bless_v god_n as_o job_n and_o bear_v and_o accept_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o iniquity_n willing_o and_o cheerful_o as_o we_o true_a humiliation_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o a_o solemn_a humiliation_n and_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o sorrow_n and_o violent_a legal_a contrition_n go_v before_o it_o there_o be_v a_o double_a kind_n of_o sorrow_n wrought_v in_o the_o ble_v heart_n of_o man_n the_o one_o be_v a_o violent_a tumultuous_a sorrow_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o hell_n and_o punishment_n the_o ground_n whereof_o be_v self-love_n and_o be_v common_o in_o those_o who_o be_v sudden_o enlighten_v and_o so_o amaze_v therewith_o be_v take_v on_o the_o sudden_a as_o we_o see_v in_o saint_n paul_n who_o be_v take_v sudden_o as_o he_o be_v go_v to_o damascus_n and_o it_o be_v discover_v to_o he_o that_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o so_o great_a a_o sin_n as_o he_o can_v never_o have_v imagine_v a_o voice_n from_o heaven_n to_o strike_v his_o ear_n on_o the_o sudden_a why_o persecute_v thou_o i_o and_o this_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n to_o have_v be_v in_o many_o who_o never_o have_v true_a humiliation_n as_o we_o see_v in_o judas_n god_n indeed_o sometime_o use_v it_o to_o bring_v man_n to_o humiliation_n as_o he_o do_v in_o saint_n paul_n but_o again_o we_o find_v in_o experience_n in_o some_o a_o cleave_a to_o god_n and_o holiness_n of_o life_n and_o a_o constant_a care_n to_o please_v he_o in_o all_o thing_n without_o this_o violent_a vex_a sorrow_n and_o many_o that_o have_v have_v their_o heart_n deep_o wound_v amaze_a affright_a and_o have_v thereupon_o take_v up_o great_a purpose_n which_o have_v come_v to_o nothing_o the_o ground_n whereof_o have_v be_v a_o violent_a passion_n as_o that_o the_o root_n wither_v so_o the_o fruit_n wither_v also_o but_o a_o true_a apprehension_n and_o conviction_n of_o sin_n as_o in_o itself_o the_o great_a misery_n be_v more_o real_a and_o draw_v the_o heart_n near_o to_o christ_n so_o that_o in_o this_o case_n we_o may_v say_v of_o these_o two_o sort_n as_o christ_n say_v of_o those_o who_o be_v bid_v to_o go_v into_o the_o vineyard_n they_o that_o say_v they_o will_v go_v do_v not_o and_o other_o that_o say_v they_o will_v not_o go_v yet_o go_v and_o therefore_o we_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v not_o always_o necessary_a to_o have_v necessary_a such_o a_o violent_a sorrow_n or_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v lie_v any_o long_a time_n in_o such_o a_o evident_a sense_n of_o wrath_n though_o always_o there_o be_v a_o right_a apprehension_n of_o sin_n which_o do_v humble_a a_o man_n which_o will_v appear_v by_o these_o consideration_n 1_o that_o be_v not_o always_o the_o great_a sorrow_n call_v the_o vanity_n of_o the_o heathen_a that_o they_o do_v neither_o good_a nor_o hurt_n and_o such_o shall_v god_n action_n be_v therefore_o if_o the_o cross_n do_v a_o man_n no_o good_a by_o but_o the_o wound_n of_o a_o enemy_n by_o this_o thou_o may_v judge_v of_o thy_o estate_n and_o of_o estate_n god_n love_n to_o thou_o by_o the_o issue_n of_o thy_o affliction_n it_o be_v true_a that_o all_o kind_n of_o cross_n fall_v alike_o to_o all_o sickness_n poverty_n etc._n etc._n upon_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o wicked_a the_o difference_n be_v only_o in_o the_o issue_n the_o same_o sun_n sh●nes_v upon_o all_o but_o it_o harden_v one_o and_o it_o soften_v another_o and_o the_o same_o wind_n blow_v upon_o all_o but_o it_o carry_v one_o ship_n into_o a_o haven_n and_o dash_v another_o against_o a_o rock_n consider_v therefore_o whether_o thy_o affliction_n bring_v thou_o home_o to_o the_o lord_n or_o whether_o it_o drive_v thou_o from_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o rock_n it_o be_v a_o common_a observation_n that_o when_o physic_n work_v not_o you_o say_v the_o party_n be_v mortal_o sick_a so_o when_o affliction_n work_v not_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o death_n if_o as_o matth._n 7._o he_o that_o take_v not_o a_o admonition_n from_o his_o brother_n be_v desperate_o wicked_a either_o as_o a_o swine_n to_o trample_v on_o it_o or_o as_o a_o dog_n to_o devour_v how_o much_o more_o when_o a_o man_n be_v admonish_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o be_v worse_a after_o it_o now_o every_o affliction_n be_v a_o admonition_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o five_o of_o isaiah_n when_o god_n have_v prune_v his_o vineyard_n and_o it_o do_v it_o not_o good_a it_o be_v then_o at_o the_o next_o door_n to_o destruction_n and_o lay_v waist_n if_o therefore_o thou_o have_v have_v some_o great_a affliction_n and_o now_o it_o be_v off_o think_v with_o thyself_o what_o profit_n and_o good_a come_v to_o thou_o by_o it_o do_v it_o come_v from_o god_n providence_n or_o not_o if_o it_o do_v there_o be_v something_o he_o intend_v and_o which_o it_o do_v imtimate_a to_o thou_o if_o thou_o then_o do_v suffer_v it_o to_o passeby_o without_o take_v any_o it_o be_v to_o a_o man_n make_v apparition_n so_o as_o a_o man_n may_v grope_v after_o he_o and_o feel_v he_o and_o take_v notice_n what_o he_o will_v have_v if_o such_o pass_v away_o and_o no_o good_a be_v do_v it_o be_v no_o presage_n of_o health_n as_o be_v that_o sickness_n which_o come_v by_o physic_n but_o of_o destruction_n it_o be_v but_o as_o a_o drop_n of_o wrath_n fore-running_a the_o great_a storm_n a_o crack_n before_o run_v the_o ruin_n of_o the_o whole_a building_n seek_v not_o therefore_o in_o distress_n so_o much_o to_o have_v the_o cross_v remove_v as_o the_o sin_n james_n 1_o rejoice_v say_v the_o apostle_n when_o you_o fall_v into_o sundry_a tentation_n which_o he_o will_v not_o have_v say_v if_o heal_v the_o sin_n have_v not_o be_v the_o great_a mercy_n still_o for_o god_n mean_v i_o good_a by_o it_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o thou_o lashe_v out_o and_o yet_o be_v in_o health_n and_o prosperity_n etc._n etc._n and_o thy_o sin_n still_o continue_v but_o thou_o be_v not_o afflict_v and_o god_n suffer_v thou_o to_o thrive_v in_o sin_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n god_n will_v destroy_v thou_o that_o he_o leave_v thou_o waste_v as_o a_o vineyard_n to_o be_v overgrow_v with_o brier_n and_o thorn_n and_o the_o last_o doctrine_n be_v that_o take_v away_o the_o sin_n the_o cross_n will_v sure_o follow_v and_o be_v take_v away_o also_o either_o it_o or_o the_o sting_n of_o remove_v it_o so_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v as_o good_a as_o no_o cross_n a_o affliction_n consist_v not_o in_o the_o bulk_n of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o burden_n what_o be_v a_o serpent_n without_o a_o sting_n what_o be_v a_o great_a bulk_n if_o it_o have_v no_o weight_n god_n can_v so_o fashion_v the_o heart_n as_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o it_o 1._o because_o cross_n do_v come_v for_o sin_n indeed_o some_o be_v not_o for_o sin_n but_o for_o trial_n for_o the_o confirmation_n 1_o of_o the_o gospel_n some_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n as_o that_o blindness_n in_o the_o blind_a man_n some_o for_o trial_n only_o as_o abraham_n offer_v up_o his_o son_n yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o come_v from_o sin_n 2._o god_n never_o afflict_v but_o for_o our_o profit_n so_o say_v 2._o the_o apostle_n heb._n 12._o our_o father_n after_o the_o flesh_n correct_v we_o not_o always_o for_o our_o profit_n but_o they_o out_o of_o passion_n oftentimes_o but_o he_o for_o our_o profit_n now_o when_o he_o have_v thereby_o make_v we_o partaker_n of_o his_o holiness_n and_o so_o we_o have_v cease_v from_o sin_n than_o he_o will_v cease_v to_o afflict_v it_o be_v otherwise_o you_o will_v say_v with_o david_n his_o object_n sin_n be_v forgive_v as_o nathan_n tell_v he_o and_o yet_o the_o cross_n be_v not_o remove_v for_o his_o child_n die_v and_o the_o sword_n depart_v not_o from_o his_o house_n there_o be_v a_o exception_n in_o these_o two_o case_n 1._o of_o scandal_n when_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v blaspheme_v answ._n then_o though_o he_o forgive_v the_o sin_n yet_o he_o may_v go_v on_o to_o punish_v for_o his_o name_n sake_n 2._o when_o we_o be_v not_o thorough_o humble_v for_o there_o may_v be_v true_a repentance_n when_o our_o lust_n be_v not_o enough_o mortify_v god_n do_v it_o that_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v the_o more_o cleanse_v thus_o david_n psal._n 51._o cry_n out_o of_o his_o break_a bone_n and_o why_o his_o heart_n he_o say_v be_v not_o cleanse_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v for_o a_o clean_a heart_n and_o a_o right_a spirit_n this_o afford_v matter_n of_o comfort_n when_o any_o affliction_n judgement_n be_v upon_o we_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v we_o shall_v never_o be_v rid_v of_o it_o but_o if_o thou_o can_v get_v but_o thy_o heart_n humble_v and_o thy_o lust_n mortify_v god_n will_v take_v away_o the_o cross_n it_o be_v our_o fault_n to_o say_v when_o we_o be_v afflict_v that_o we_o shall_v never_o see_v better_a day_n why_o so_o be_v not_o god_n able_a to_o remove_v it_o and_o if_o the_o sin_n be_v remove_v he_o will_v be_v willing_a also_o no_o man_n be_v in_o a_o hard_a case_n but_o he_o that_o have_v a_o hard_a heart_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v in_o all_o condition_n that_o what_o be_v at_o present_a will_v always_o continue_v if_o we_o be_v in_o prosperity_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v as_o they_o in_o the_o prophet_n that_o to_o morrow_n will_v be_v as_o to_o day_n and_o much_o more_o abundant_a so_o if_o in_o affliction_n to_o say_v also_o that_o as_o it_o be_v to_o day_n it_o will_v be_v to_o morrow_n and_o so_o for_o ever_o but_o know_v that_o if_o you_o humble_v yourselves_o and_o turn_v from_o the_o evil_a way_n god_n will_v take_v away_o the_o calamity_n there_o be_v a_o excellent_a place_n for_o this_o 1_o pet._n 5._o 6._o humble_a yourselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o he_o shall_v exalt_v you_o in_o due_a time_n when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v by_o god_n let_v he_o humble_v himself_o and_o then_o god_n
