reputation_n to_o be_v have_v in_o the_o eve_n of_o the_o world_n than_o all_o the_o pin_n and_o web_n be_v break_v all_o their_o resolution_n and_o all_o the_o strong_a coard_n of_o their_o former_a purpose_n be_v but_o as_o fire_n and_o tow_n they_o break_v they_o all_o in_o piece_n so_o than_o they_o be_v but_o asleep_a not_o mortify_v second_o sin_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v civilise_a when_o it_o be_v lay_v in_o a_o swoon_n a_o man_n lie_v in_o a_o swoon_n be_v dead_a for_o a_o while_n and_o you_o will_v think_v he_o can_v hardly_o be_v recover_v for_o he_o can_v neither_o hear_v nor_o see_v nor_o go_v nor_o speak_v and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o be_v not_o dead_a only_o his_o vital_a heat_n be_v go_v from_o his_o outward_a member_n unto_o the_o inward_a power_n of_o the_o heart_n even_o so_o a_o man_n sin_n seem_v to_o be_v dead_a when_o the_o spirit_n of_o his_o lust_n be_v convey_v into_o a_o high_a lust_n as_o for_o example_n suppose_v here_o be_v one_o that_o be_v a_o covetous_a worldling_n this_o man_n peradventure_o be_v very_o moderate_a and_o temperate_a he_o be_v not_o give_v to_o game_n dice_a card_v wench_v he_o be_v not_o give_v to_o building_n or_o glorious_a apparel_n but_o what_o be_v these_o sin_n dead_a in_o he_o no_o but_o the_o strength_n of_o they_o be_v carry_v up_o into_o a_o high_a lust_n for_o if_o he_o shall_v follow_v whore_v or_o game_n &c._n &c._n the_o lust_n of_o his_o covetousness_n will_v be_v curb_v and_o his_o gain_n will_v not_o come_v in_o with_o such_o a_o full_a career_n unto_o he_o now_o all_o these_o sin_n forenamed_a be_v but_o attendant_n and_o slave_n unto_o this_o one_o lust_n so_o many_o man_n it_o may_v be_v will_v give_v over_o a_o thousand_o sin_n yea_o all_o except_o this_o one_o yet_o all_o those_o thousand_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v nay_o it_o may_v be_v he_o scarce_o think_v upon_o any_o of_o they_o why_o because_o they_o be_v take_v up_o with_o a_o high_a lust_n even_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o civil_a formal_a professor_n they_o will_v come_v to_o church_n miss_v never_o a_o sermon_n that_o they_o can_v come_v unto_o they_o will_v talk_v of_o heaven_n they_o will_v not_o omit_v any_o holy_a communication_n they_o will_v read_v the_o scripture_n pray_v in_o their_o family_n neglect_v no_o holy_a duty_n why_o then_o what_o be_v their_o sin_n it_o be_v not_o the_o omit_v of_o these_o thing_n but_o the_o careless_a practice_n of_o they_o in_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n for_o although_o these_o sin_n be_v in_o a_o swoon_n the_o strength_n of_o they_o be_v go_v up_o to_o maintain_v a_o high_a lust_n for_o suppose_v he_o go_v not_o to_o church_n how_o shall_v he_o maintain_v his_o profession_n and_o if_o he_o can_v not_o now_o and_o then_o speak_v of_o heaven_n it_o be_v impossible_a he_o shall_v have_v his_o depth_n of_o selfe-deceipt_n therefore_o we_o conclude_v these_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v they_o only_o be_v civilise_a three_o sin_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v civilise_a when_o the_o sap_n of_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o and_o no_o contrary_a grace_n infuse_v as_o for_o example_n suppose_v a_o man_n give_v over_o drunkenness_n yet_o if_o this_o man_n be_v not_o fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n his_o drunkenness_n be_v not_o mortify_v though_o he_o live_v sober_o afterward_o all_o the_o day_n of_o his_o life_n again_o suppose_v a_o man_n give_v over_o his_o intemperate_a anger_n he_o be_v not_o touchy_a nor_o choleric_a nor_o subject_n to_o passion_n yet_o if_o he_o have_v not_o turn_v his_o anger_n against_o himself_o for_o every_o one_o of_o his_o corruption_n which_o break_v out_o against_o god_n his_o anger_n be_v not_o mortify_v suppose_v a_o man_n be_v not_o give_v over_o to_o worldly_a grief_n but_o have_v give_v it_o over_o yet_o if_o his_o grief_n be_v not_o turn_v another_o way_n as_o to_o grieve_v for_o his_o sin_n his_o grief_n be_v not_o mortify_v again_o suppose_v a_o man_n be_v not_o set_v upon_o a_o merry_a pin_n ever_o jest_v or_o tell_v forth_o merry_a tale_n but_o now_o he_o have_v give_v they_o over_o yet_o if_o he_o have_v not_o set_v his_o joy_n on_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o learn_v true_o to_o be_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v impossible_a we_o can_v say_v his_o carnal_a mirth_n be_v mortify_v for_o as_o the_o schoolman_n say_v there_o be_v nothing_o corrupt_v till_o another_o thing_n be_v produce_v there_o be_v no_o dissolution_n of_o wood_n until_o it_o be_v turn_v into_o ash_n so_o sin_n be_v never_o take_v away_o nor_o utter_o dissolve_v until_o there_o be_v contrary_a grace_n bring_v into_o the_o heart_n instead_o thereof_o so_o than_o unless_o therebe_n contrary_a grace_n wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o contrary_n of_o all_o those_o sin_n be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o go_v on_o with_o rest_n and_o quietness_n in_o those_o his_o unholy_a course_n wherein_o he_o use_v to_o walk_v he_o may_v forsake_v they_o for_o a_o while_n but_o yet_o he_o can_v mortify_v they_o but_o as_o a_o schoolboy_n that_o play_v the_o truant_n while_o he_o be_v under_o the_o rod_n he_o will_v confess_v his_o fault_n and_o promise_v to_o do_v so_o no_o more_o and_o he_o very_o think_v so_o at_o that_o time_n and_o desire_v hearty_o so_o to_o do_v but_o it_o be_v a_o desire_n that_o he_o be_v provoke_v unto_o for_o fear_n of_o the_o rod_n and_o not_o for_o love_v of_o duty_n for_o when_o once_o the_o rod_n be_v go_v and_o the_o smart_n over_o than_o he_o fall_v to_o his_o own_o old_a truant_v course_n again_o so_o we_o read_v in_o the_o first_o of_o jonah_n that_o when_o the_o mariner_n be_v in_o peril_n of_o their_o life_n than_o every_o one_o of_o they_o can_v call_v upon_o his_o god_n but_o when_o the_o storm_n and_o danger_n be_v over_o they_o quick_o leave_v off_o and_o care_v not_o for_o call_v on_o god_n any_o long_o five_o and_o last_o sin_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v civilise_a by_o god_n give_v of_o positive_a common_a grace_n which_o he_o give_v unto_o wicked_a man_n as_o in_o mat._n 25._o god_n give_v unto_o the_o unprofitable_a servant_n a_o whole_a talon_n which_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v a_o hundred_o and_o sixty_o and_o odd_a pound_n so_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o wicked_a man_n many_o good_a grace_n as_o softness_n of_o disposition_n lovingnesse_n or_o easy_a to_o be_v entreat_v and_o hereupon_o they_o come_v to_o church_n hear_v the_o word_n and_o perform_v many_o other_o christian_a duty_n yet_o all_o these_o be_v but_o common_a grace_n which_o a_o man_n may_v have_v and_o yet_o his_o sin_n not_o mortify_v and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v your_o member_n etc._n etc._n whence_o observe_v that_o if_o we_o look_v to_o have_v any_o benefitte_n doct._n by_o or_o interest_n in_o christ_n we_o must_v mortify_v all_o our_o sin_n and_o all_o our_o corruption_n as_o if_o the_o apostle_n have_v say_v make_v all_o your_o earthly_a member_n to_o be_v as_o a_o dead_a corpse_n now_o we_o know_v in_o a_o dead_a corpse_n the_o eye_n be_v there_o but_o they_o can_v see_v the_o foot_n be_v there_o also_o but_o they_o want_v strength_n for_o to_o go_v it_o have_v all_o the_o member_n but_o it_o have_v not_o life_n and_o power_n to_o

but_o i_o will_v let_v they_o alone_o till_o they_o die_v of_o themselves_o sure_o i_o be_o that_o they_o will_v one_o day_n die_v no_o no_o the_o prophet_n give_v other_o counsel_n plough_v up_o say_v he_o the_o fallow_a ground_n and_o sow_v not_o among_o thorn_n if_o thou_o do_v not_o they_o will_v grow_v up_o to_o that_o height_n and_o rankness_n that_o they_o will_v spoil_v the_o whole_a harvest_n even_o so_o if_o thou_o kill_v not_o thy_o sin_n but_o suffer_v they_o to_o die_v of_o themselves_o they_o will_v spoil_v all_o thy_o spiritual_a harvest_n and_o quite_o banish_v thou_o out_o of_o heaven_n for_o evermore_o the_o three_o use_n may_v manifest_v unto_o we_o that_o use_v 3_o the_o work_n of_o our_o redemption_n be_v no_o easy_a work_n as_o many_o man_n in_o the_o world_n think_v it_o to_o be_v the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v your_o member_n now_o can_v a_o man_n stab_v his_o own_o arm_n through_o with_o ease_n can_v he_o cut_v off_o his_o leg_n or_o any_o other_o member_n without_o feel_v any_o great_a pain_n no_o more_o can_v a_o man_n kill_v his_o sin_n and_o mortify_v his_o lust_n with_o ease_n it_o be_v call_v mortification_n to_o show_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o misery_n and_o pain_n in_o it_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o those_o that_o be_v christian_n have_v crucify_v the_o flesh_n etc._n etc._n gal._n 5._o 24._o and_o therefore_o repentance_n be_v set_v out_o unto_o we_o by_o crucify_a which_o be_v the_o hard_a of_o all_o kind_n of_o mortify_v can_v a_o man_n set_v his_o flesh_n upon_o the_o tenter_n pierce_v his_o hand_n and_o foot_n with_o nail_n lay_v his_o whole_a weight_n upon_o the_o tenter_n and_o yet_o feel_v no_o pain_n cicero_n a_o wise_a heathen_a say_v that_o crucify_a be_v he_o torment_v that_o cruelty_n itself_o have_v invent_v to_o put_v a_o man_n to_o death_n it_o be_v the_o soare_v kind_n of_o death_n that_o can_v be_v devise_v and_o the_o apostle_n to_o set_v forth_o repentance_n what_o it_o be_v show_v it_o by_o crucify_a it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o cut_v off_o the_o outward_a act_n of_o sin_n as_o of_o swear_v or_o drunkenness_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n but_o to_o crucify_v a_o man_n lust_n and_o to_o mortify_v daily_o the_o body_n of_o death_n which_o he_o ber_v about_o he_o this_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n indeed_o a_o father_n say_v it_o be_v the_o hard_a text_n in_o all_o the_o bible_n and_o the_o hard_a duty_n in_o all_o christianity_n that_o we_o can_v go_v about_o they_o that_o do_v it●_n a_o do_v all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o let_v a_o man_n resolve_v with_o himself_o that_o unless_o he_o attain_v unto_o this_o there_o be_v no_o christ_n for_o he_o how_o shall_v we_o say_v the_o apostle_n that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o rom._n 6._o 2._o the_o apostle_n make_v it_o a_o paradox_n and_o wonder_n that_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o unreasonable_a as_o to_o think_v that_o they_o be_v crucify_v with_o christ_n and_o yet_o live_v in_o their_o sin_n be_v it_o possible_a that_o you_o can_v be_v dead_a with_o christ_n and_o yet_o live_v in_o your_o sin_n no_o no_o it_o can_v be_v but_o some_o may_v object_v and_o say_v what_o object_n do_v the_o apostle_n mean_v to_o exhort_v the_o colossian_n unto_o mortification_n be_v they_o not_o already_o mortify_v do_v he_o not_o say_v a_o little_a before_o that_o they_o be_v crucify_v and_o bury_v together_o with_o christ_n yes_o it_o be_v true_a but_o they_o that_o have_v mortify_v sol._n sol._n their_o earthly_a member_n must_v go_v on_o and_o persevere_v in_o this_o mortification_n and_o that_o for_o three_o reason_n first_o because_o the_o very_a same_o sin_n that_o have_v be_v kill_v will_v live_v again_o unless_o it_o be_v continual_o mortify_v for_o sin_n be_v strong-hearted_n it_o be_v not_o every_o blow_n that_o will_v kill_v sin_n stone-dead_a no_o no_o we_o may_v say_v of_o sin_n as_o some_o say_v of_o cat_n they_o have_v nine_o life_n kill_v sin_n once_o and_o it_o will_v revive_v again_o kill_v it_o the_o second_o time_n and_o it_o will_v yet_o live_v kill_v it_o the_o three_o time_n it_o will_v yet_o have_v life_n unless_o it_o be_v continual_o mortify_v it_o will_v never_o be_v stark_o dead_a and_o therefore_o the_o work●_n must_v be_v continue_v as_o christ_n say_v of_o his_o disciple_n if_o you_o continue_v in_o my_o word_n then_o be_v you_o my_o disciple_n indeed_o so_o if_o we_o go_v on_o in_o mortification_n then_o very_o be_v we_o christ_n disciple_n second_o suppose_v the_o sin_n mortify_v do_v not_o rise_v again_o yet_o if_o we_o go_v not_o on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o mortification_n there_o will_v arise_v another_o sin_n in_o the_o room_n of_o it_o sin_n be_v like_o the_o monster_n hydra_n cut_v off_o one_o head_n and_o many_o will_v rise_v up_o in_o its_o room_n even_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n therefore_o thou_o must_v daily_o mortify_v it_o or_o else_o it_o will_v grow_v again_o there_o be_v a_o history_n that_o speak_v of_o a_o figtree_n that_o grow_v in_o a_o stone_n wall_n and_o all_o mean_n be_v use_v to_o kill_v it_o they_o cut_v off_o the_o branch_n and_o it_o grow_v again_o they_o cut_v down_o the_o body_n and_o it_o grow_v again_o they_o cut_v it_o up_o by_o the_o root_n and_o still_o it_o live_v and_o grow_v until_o they_o pull_v down_o the_o stone_n wall_n even_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n lop_v off_o the_o branch_n it_o live_v cut_v down_o the_o body_n it_o will_v not_o die_v dig_v up_o the_o root_n and_o it_o will_v still_o revive_v and_o will_v never_o leave_v grow_v until_o god_n pull_v down_o the_o stone_n wall_n of_o this_o our_o earthly_a tabernacle_n and_o lay_v it_o in_o the_o dust_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v still_o be_v mortify_v of_o it_o three_o because_o as_o we_o mortify_v so_o we_o mortify_v but_o in_o part_n as_o say_v the_o apostle_n in_o another_o case_n we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n etc._n etc._n so_o may_v we_o say_v of_o this_o duty_n we_o mortify_v but_o in_o part_n as_o we_o say_v of_o a_o man_n breathe_v out_o his_o last_o breath_n he_o be_v ady_v but_o not_o quite_o dead_a so_o we_o may_v say_v of_o sin_n though_o it_o lie_v sprawl_v upon_o the_o ground_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o dead_a the_o last_o gasp_n be_v not_o past_a nay_o it_o may_v be_v sin_n be_v more_o strive_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o child_n of_o god_n convert_v than_o it_o be_v before_o conversion_n as_o a_o ox_n or_o a_o ass_n when_o they_o have_v their_o death_n blow_n will_v lash_v and_o struggle_v more_o then_o than_o they_o do_v in_o all_o their_o life_n time_n before_o but_o this_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o pang_n of_o death_n be_v give_v up_o their_o last_o breath_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n gal._n 5._o so_o that_o they_o can_v not_o do_v what_o they_o will_v verse_n 17._o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v sin_n be_v so_o mortify_v that_o it_o have_v his_o death_n wound_n in_o thou_o else_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n yea_o such_o a_o death_n wound_n as_o it_o can_v possible_o recover_v again_o if_o a_o man_n that_o have_v receive_v his_o de●ths_n wound_n shall_v send_v for_o all_o the_o physician_n in_o the_o world_n and_o take_v all_o the_o physic_n wrought_v in_o he_o sin_n have_v his_o death_n blow_n and_o although_o the_o devil_n come_v as_o physician_n with_o all_o the_o cordial_n julip_n and_o balm_n under_o heaven_n and_o use_v all_o the_o shift_n and_o devise_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o recover_v it_o again_o all_o will_v not_o do_v why_o because_o it_o have_v receive_v its_o death_n blow_n it_o may_v be_v with_o his_o industry_n and_o cost_n he_o may_v make_v the_o face_n of_o sin_n look_v fresh_a and_o fair_a for_o a_o time_n but_o it_o have_v it_o death_n wound_n and_o it_o will_v down_o
