feeling_n he_o must_v distinguish_v between_o god_n simile_n spirit_n and_o his_o grace_n in_o we_o for_o his_o spirit_n may_v live_v in_o we_o when_o his_o grace_n be_v dead_a in_o we_o psal._n 51._o for_o as_o by_o some_o extreme_a sickness_n life_n may_v be_v within_o one_o yet_o it_o can_v be_v feel_v of_o the_o sick_a body_n so_o in_o some_o great_a temptation_n the_o holy_a ghost_n may_v be_v in_o we_o and_o yet_o we_o not_o feel_v nor_o find_v his_o presence_n howbeit_o as_o by_o breathe_v never_o so_o short_a we_o discern_v life_n so_o by_o the_o action_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o it_o never_o so_o little_a we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o us._n 4_o such_o as_o for_o want_v of_o feeling_n be_v loath_a to_o pray_v must_v learn_v not_o to_o tarry_v to_o pray_v till_o they_o find_v feeling_n but_o offer_v themselves_o up_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o humble_v feeling_n themselves_o before_o he_o pray_v on_o and_o continue_v in_o prayer_n of_o faith_n though_o not_o of_o feeling_n 5_o though_o we_o feel_v not_o the_o spiritual_a joy_n which_o we_o shall_v feel_v yet_o let_v we_o not_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o so_o that_o our_o conscience_n tell_v we_o that_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o withdraw_v somewhat_o joy_n from_o our_o outward_a pleasure_n for_o want_v of_o this_o inward_a pleasure_n and_o that_o we_o have_v not_o prevent_v or_o smother_v out_o these_o spiritual_a joy_n but_o be_v grieve_v that_o we_o have_v they_o not_o and_o wait_v for_o the_o time_n to_o feel_v they_o for_o of_o all_o thing_n we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o draw_v not_o into_o their_o steed_n carnal_a joy_n and_o so_o drive_v as_o it_o be_v into_o exile_n the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o we_o by_o they_o 6_o a_o certain_a man_n complain_v that_o he_o be_v comfortless_a for_o want_v of_o feeling_n receive_v this_o answer_n oh_o brother_n be_v of_o good_a comfort_n we_o hold_v christ_n by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o feel_v fruit_n of_o faith_n 1_o one_o be_v courteous_o falute_v and_o worthy_o commend_v of_o a_o gentlewoman_n who_o say_v she_o hear_v a_o very_a good_a report_n of_o he_o he_o answer_v she_o the_o like_a have_v i_o hear_v of_o you_o but_o god_n make_v our_o after_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n more_o effectual_a than_o the_o former_a or_o else_o we_o shall_v not_o answer_v the_o glory_n of_o be_v bitter_a which_o be_v sweet_a unto_o we_o then_o any_o worldly_a increase_n unto_o the_o worldly_a man_n or_o honey_n can_v be_v sanctification_n to_o they_o that_o love_v it_o these_o be_v evident_a token_n of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n to_o love_v good_a because_o it_o be_v good_a and_o to_o hate_v sin_n because_o it_o be_v sin_n the_o more_o we_o grow_v in_o gift_n the_o more_o to_o hunger_n the_o more_o to_o complain_v of_o our_o unworthiness_n the_o more_o be_v humble_v 1_o in_o ourselves_o the_o more_o meek_o to_o judge_v of_o other_o when_o we_o be_v most_o quiet_a with_o store_n as_o a_o treasure_n and_o precious_a jewel_n who_o virtue_n be_v to_o comfort_v we_o in_o time_n of_o great_a trouble_n who_o operation_n be_v to_o draw_v joy_n out_o of_o the_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o sorrow_n when_o the_o world_n do_v hate_v we_o to_o show_v how_o god_n do_v love_v we_o and_o when_o our_o mind_n be_v deject_v to_o bring_v a_o pawn_n from_o god_n his_o spirit_n to_o sickness_n and_o in_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o therefore_o the_o more_o careful_o must_v we_o use_v the_o mean_n whereby_o we_o may_v buy_v and_o purchase_v the_o same_o when_o we_o want_v it_o let_v we_o complain_v and_o mislike_v ourselves_o accuse_v ourselves_o of_o some_o sin_n past_a or_o enarm_v ourselves_o for_o some_o evil_n to_o come_v undoubted_o the_o jealousy_n of_o god_n his_o place_n and_o that_o for_o lack_v of_o this_o true_a joy_n and_o delight_n in_o they_o they_o will_v fall_v away_o and_o deceive_v especial_o when_o man_n come_v to_o their_o liberty_n and_o be_v without_o controlment_n of_o person_n awe_n of_o any_o place_n or_o regard_n of_o any_o time_n man_n for_o a_o time_n be_v hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n man_n may_v for_o order_n sake_n pray_v sing_v receive_v the_o sacrament_n but_o if_o it_o be_v without_o joy_n will_v not_o that_o hypocrisy_n in_o time_n break_v out_o will_v they_o not_o begin_v to_o be_v weary_a nay_o will_v they_o not_o be_v as_o ready_a to_o hear_v any_o
with_o the_o one_o so_o we_o be_v cast_v down_o with_o the_o other_o by_o mistrust_n in_o god_n providence_n and_o despair_n of_o his_o promise_n experience_n teach_v we_o that_o as_o a_o little_a prosperity_n make_v we_o to_o forget_v god_n so_o many_o inconvenience_n by_o affliction_n may_v befall_v we_o as_o either_o dulness_n deadness_n blockishness_n or_o wicked_a shift_n or_o ungodly_a yet_o i_o will_v content_v myself_o to_o go_v one_o thing_n further_o that_o be_v that_o as_o you_o seek_v for_o continuance_n and_o increase_n of_o love_n so_o you_o take_v heed_n of_o jealousy_n for_o although_o that_o true_a love_n be_v very_a jealousy_n earnest_n and_o mix_v with_o godly_a jealousy_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o wicked_a jealousy_n and_o that_o cause_v causeless_a suspicion_n which_o work_v great_a woe_n unto_o such_o as_o give_v credit_n unto_o they_o take_v heed_n therefore_o my_o brother_n and_o sister_n of_o this_o yea_o though_o there_o shall_v seem_v just_a cause_n yet_o give_v not_o too_o speedy_a credit_n unto_o they_o now_o if_o you_o desire_v to_o know_v in_o your_o heart_n which_o be_v ungodly_a suspicion_n know_v they_o by_o this_o token_n for_o they_o than_o a_o infidel_n but_o i_o charge_v you_o to_o take_v heed_n lest_o through_o distrust_n in_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n you_o make_v shipshracke_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n use_v any_o unjust_a or_o unlawful_a mean_n and_o you_o sister_n be_v command_v to_o be_v a_o good_a housewife_n and_o to_o keep_v those_o thing_n together_o which_o you_o have_v and_o so_o increase_v they_o as_o you_o may_v from_o time_n to_o time_n be_v helpful_a unto_o other_o for_o if_o you_o shall_v consume_v and_o waste_v thing_n unprofitablie_o you_o shall_v grieve_v and_o trouble_v the_o mind_n of_o your_o husband_n who_o ought_v to_o be_v case_v of_o that_o care_n by_o you_o and_o further_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n to_o call_v either_o of_o you_o to_o suffer_v persecution_n in_o time_n of_o trial_n the_o weak_a must_n for_o the_o lord_n cause_n give_v place_n to_o the_o strong_a and_o desire_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v great_a strength_n for_o we_o must_v labour_v for_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v be_v willing_a for_o the_o gospel_n to_o forsake_v all_o thing_n whatsoever_o we_o have_v out_o of_o the_o nine_o commandment_n i_o will_v give_v you_o this_o rule_n that_o neither_o of_o you_o blaze_v another_o abroad_o the_o infirmity_n of_o each_o other_o it_o be_v a_o great_a enemy_n to_o pure_a love_n but_o if_o there_o be_v need_n of_o counsel_n and_o help_v in_o any_o you_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o your_o nature_n will_v never_o be_v commandment_n free_v from_o they_o in_o this_o life_n therefore_o you_o must_v prepare_v to_o prayer_n and_o other_o heavenly_a read_v act._n 20._o 10._o where_o paul_n be_v occupy_v in_o preach_v and_o espy_v a_o young_a man_n who_o be_v in_o a_o dead_a sleep_n fall_v down_o dead_a make_v no_o conscience_n to_o cease_v from_o a_o ceremony_n if_o he_o have_v purpose_v any_o such_o thing_n and_o not_o have_v so_o amplify_v the_o matter_n we_o see_v he_o rather_o speak_v against_o their_o superstitious_a opinion_n and_o abuse_n of_o the_o sabbath_n than_o affirm_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o man_n do_v surmise_v to_o these_o former_a reason_n we_o may_v add_v that_o which_o be_v matth._n 24._o 20._o pray_o that_o your_o flight_n be_v argument_n not_o in_o the_o winter_n neither_o on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n this_o say_v they_o show_v that_o the_o persecution_n of_o jerusalem_n shall_v be_v by_o so_o blessing_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v turn_v to_o curse_n and_o the_o child_n which_o otherwise_o be_v a_o comfort_n unto_o they_o shall_v now_o increase_v their_o trouble_n discomfort_n and_o sorrow_n whether_o they_o contain_v any_o sound_a truth_n for_o their_o purpose_n howsoever_o they_o be_v think_v to_o have_v some_o hold_n in_o show_n these_o allegation_n be_v either_o out_o of_o the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n or_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrews_n out_o of_o the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n which_o he_o write_v to_o the_o roman_n to_o the_o galatian_n or_o to_o the_o colossian_n the_o place_n which_o they_o bring_v out_o of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n be_v in_o the_o 14_o chap._n vers_fw-la 1._o he_o that_o be_v weak_a in_o the_o faith_n receive_v unto_o you_o but_o not_o anger_n wrought_v in_o we_o for_o sin_n it_o be_v needful_a that_o we_o labour_v for_o that_o affection_n which_o be_v in_o the_o prophet_n david_n when_o he_o say_v the_o rebuke_n of_o 69._o they_o that_o rebuke_v thou_o have_v fall_v upon_o i_o where_o the_o prophet_n show_v that_o every_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v against_o god_n he_o think_v that_o it_o be_v commit_v against_o himself_o pray_v nor_o what_o to_o say_v but_o speak_v sigh_v and_o groan_v for_o this_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n acceptable_a to_o the_o lord_n for_o though_o we_o can_v pray_v with_o comfort_n yet_o we_o must_v crave_v of_o the_o lord_n even_o by_o mourning_n and_o complain_v of_o our_o own_o estate_n and_o bewail_v our_o case_n this_o also_o be_v a_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n for_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o sacrifice_n be_v a_o contrite_a heart_n say_v the_o prophet_n and_o as_o we_o say_v before_o out_o of_o the_o last_o of_o isaiah_n to_o a_o humble_a heart_n will_v i_o look_v say_v the_o lord_n when_o we_o can_v then_o find_v free_a joy_n let_v we_o come_v with_o free_a sorrow_n and_o when_o we_o know_v 27_o not_o how_o to_o pray_v god_n spirit_n will_v teach_v we_o how_o to_o crave_v how_o to_o sigh_v and_o how_o to_o pray_v and_o the_o lord_n will_v know_v the_o meaning_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n cry_v in_o us._n the_o meaning_n of_o the_o man_n of_o god_n in_o effect_n be_v i_o pour_v out_o my_o prayer_n in_o the_o abundance_n of_o my_o grief_n and_o from_o a_o full_a heart_n we_o see_v when_o a_o man_n want_v a_o thing_n though_o he_o can_v entreat_v his_o friend_n to_o obtain_v it_o of_o he_o yet_o he_o may_v free_o mourn_v and_o lament_v his_o estate_n let_v we_o then_o when_o simile_n we_o can_v pray_v not_o cease_v to_o mourn_v and_o to_o make_v a_o noise_n as_o ezechias_n who_o chatter_v like_o a_o crane_n or_o swallow_n wherein_o he_o show_v that_o he_o be_v so_o press_v with_o sorrow_n that_o he_o can_v do_v nothing_o but_o sigh_n and_o groan_n when_o we_o grow_v therefore_o in_o languish_a grief_n this_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n which_o please_v the_o lord_n but_o it_o nourish_v still_o in_o we_o mistrust_v we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n the_o unperfit_a speech_n of_o god_n child_n and_o dear_a saint_n utter_v in_o their_o grief_n their_o pathetical_a affection_n for_o what_o be_v the_o remedy_n in_o this_o confusion_n but_o even_o to_o pour_v out_o free_o before_o the_o lord_n their_o grief_n and_o in_o open_v they_o to_o their_o friend_n yea_o and_o when_o they_o can_v do_v neither_o of_o both_o yet_o will_v they_o reveal_v their_o sorrow_n to_o the_o tree_n of_o the_o field_n his_o offering_n we_o see_v be_v his_o grief_n the_o lord_n be_v god_n and_o not_o a_o idol_n he_o will_v hear_v sin_n thou_o when_o thou_o cry_v unto_o he_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o be_v ashamed_a to_o confess_v thy_o fault_n before_o man_n thou_o need_v not_o be_v ashamed_a to_o confess_v thy_o sin_n before_o god_n man_n may_v cast_v thou_o for_o to_o help_v himself_o this_o be_v a_o great_a temptation_n and_o if_o god_n have_v not_o assist_v he_o he_o may_v have_v fall_v hereby_o for_o we_o see_v that_o saul_n when_o the_o lord_n give_v he_o no_o answer_n by_o urim_n and_o thummim_n nor_o other_o ordinary_a mean_n he_o think_v good_a in_o policy_n to_o ask_v counsel_n of_o a_o witch_n which_o he_o before_o time_n have_v punish_v with_o death_n thus_o will_v corrupt_v judgement_n have_v carry_v he_o to_o use_v policy_n and_o unlawful_a mean_n and_o to_o have_v forsake_v the_o lantern_n of_o the_o word_n if_o the_o lord_n corrupt_v for_o they_o will_v have_v carry_v he_o to_o revenge_v when_o he_o see_v himself_o to_o be_v unreasonable_o and_o unconscionable_o deal_v withal_o and_o therefore_o to_o restrain_v the_o headstrong_a affection_n of_o revenge_n it_o be_v very_o needful_a

never_o be_v sever_v from_o our_o god_n for_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v never_o have_v good_a issue_n of_o they_o so_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o make_v not_o god_n a_o revenger_n of_o our_o affection_n but_o pray_v that_o we_o may_v be_v harness_v with_o a_o righteous_a cause_n and_o with_o a_o right_a handle_n of_o it_o from_o god_n true_a it_o be_v then_o that_o in_o trouble_n we_o may_v pray_v not_o to_o be_v overcome_v yet_o we_o see_v the_o man_n of_o god_n confess_v how_o he_o behave_v himself_o well_o in_o affliction_n and_o as_o by_o the_o fire_n the_o gold_n be_v both_o try_v good_a and_o purge_v from_o the_o dross_n so_o the_o lord_n prove_v in_o he_o the_o gold_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o scour_v he_o from_o corrupt_a affection_n he_o scour_v he_o from_o the_o love_n of_o this_o world_n to_o stir_v up_o in_o he_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v he_o scour_v he_o from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o quicken_v in_o he_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o stir_v up_o his_o gift_n to_o serve_v god_n glory_n and_o scour_v he_o from_o the_o love_n of_o himself_o so_o by_o his_o fatherly_a chastisement_n the_o lord_n quicken_v we_o in_o good_a thing_n and_o deliver_v we_o from_o evil_a so_o we_o have_v hear_v also_o how_o in_o our_o defence_n we_o must_v pray_v for_o god_n grace_n because_o for_o want_v of_o wisdom_n and_o patience_n we_o can_v answer_v our_o own_o cause_n for_o as_o in_o our_o suit_n at_o law_n we_o get_v pleader_n and_o proctor_n to_o speak_v for_o we_o so_o we_o must_v know_v that_o in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n we_o can_v plead_v for_o ourselves_o but_o must_v open_v our_o suit_n to_o christ_n which_o must_v plead_v it_o for_o us._n now_o in_o that_o he_o say_v let_v not_o the_o proud_a oppress_v from_o judgement_n and_o justice_n we_o must_v not_o think_v then_o to_o deal_v ill_o with_o they_o that_o deal_v ill_a with_o we_o neither_o must_v we_o deal_v well_o but_o for_o a_o time_n because_o we_o must_v persevere_v for_o when_o we_o slip_v too_o much_o we_o never_o show_v that_o we_o do_v true_o execute_v judgement_n and_o justice_n if_o the_o man_n of_o god_n here_o so_o resist_v the_o devil_n and_o wicked_a man_n which_o be_v as_o the_o instrument_n of_o satan_n breathe_v for_o our_o destruction_n we_o must_v also_o fight_v against_o they_o after_o his_o example_n although_o his_o from_o our_o cause_n and_o though_o we_o will_v cry_v in_o our_o prayer_n to_o be_v hear_v to_o the_o cloud_n and_o send_v forth_o prayer_n loud_a shriek_n though_o we_o will_v roar_v as_o a_o cannon_n gun_n yet_o what_o be_v it_o that_o season_v our_o prayer_n even_o the_o mourning_n of_o our_o heart_n the_o fail_v of_o our_o eye_n and_o when_o we_o pray_v with_o unspeakable_a sigh_n which_o can_v be_v express_v for_o they_o be_v not_o loud_a eloquent_a and_o well_o set_v prayer_n which_o be_v acceptable_a to_o the_o lord_n but_o our_o stay_a ourselves_o on_o the_o lord_n and_o our_o continue_v in_o well_o do_v and_o our_o maintain_n of_o a_o good_a cause_n to_o the_o utmost_a so_o that_o a_o man_n may_v soon_o pull_v the_o eye_n out_o of_o our_o head_n and_o the_o heart_n out_o of_o our_o cause_n body_n and_o bereave_v we_o of_o our_o life_n than_o make_v we_o leave_v righteousness_n and_o though_o trouble_n shall_v come_v we_o will_v still_o follow_v our_o cause_n to_o the_o fail_v of_o our_o eye_n faint_v of_o our_o heart_n and_o melt_v of_o our_o power_n herein_o then_o appear_v the_o true_a virtue_n of_o the_o faith_n of_o this_o man_n of_o god_n because_o while_o no_o wickedness_n be_v offer_v many_o will_v do_v well_o but_o after_o often_o trial_n with_o injury_n they_o execute_v neither_o judgement_n nor_o justice_n so_o that_o where_o this_o faith_n want_v there_o be_v no_o true_a love_n of_o judgement_n and_o justice_n beside_o here_o we_o be_v to_o mark_v that_o that_o be_v a_o true_a prayer_n which_o come_v from_o the_o true_a feel_n and_o deep_a sense_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o without_o this_o well_o set_v
who_o hear_v the_o word_n be_v neither_o hot_a nor_o cold_a see_v than_o we_o be_v rather_o laodicean_n than_o david_n we_o must_v cry_v lord_n give_v we_o understanding_n that_o we_o may_v live_v fatherly_a providence_n and_o let_v this_o purge_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o if_o we_o can_v do_v this_o than_o nothing_o shall_v separate_v we_o from_o god_n as_o paul_n say_v rom._n 8._o and_o again_o he_o say_v there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n for_o they_o have_v his_o spirit_n to_o purge_v they_o from_o sin_n and_o to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n the_o want_n of_o these_o cause_v man_n to_o step_v back_o and_o the_o weakness_n of_o our_o faith_n &_o the_o carelessness_n of_o these_o cause_v such_o fear_n in_o god_n child_n and_o such_o shrink_a for_o the_o devil_n lay_v their_o sin_n to_o their_o charge_n which_o they_o see_v not_o discharge_v and_o their_o faith_n be_v weak_a and_o therefore_o they_o be_v dive_v up_o and_o down_o and_o sure_o trouble_n must_v come_v to_o all_o for_o so_o it_o be_v ordain_v though_o to_o some_o less_o than_o other_o and_o therefore_o when_o it_o come_v we_o be_v faint_a if_o we_o have_v not_o be_v careful_a to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n and_o to_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n but_o if_o we_o have_v do_v thus_o then_o shall_v death_n be_v pleasant_a unto_o we_o for_o we_o shall_v be_v bless_v apoc._n 12._o and_o our_o work_n shall_v follow_v we_o that_o be_v our_o faith_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n again_o if_o we_o suffer_v for_o our_o sin_n etc._n etc._n then_o we_o this_o world_n because_o they_o never_o feel_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n they_o seek_v their_o own_o glory_n because_o they_o never_o feel_v what_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v and_o never_o seek_v knowledge_n because_o they_o know_v not_o what_o the_o soul_n be_v yea_o the_o child_n of_o god_n because_o they_o labour_v not_o continual_o to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n and_o to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n they_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o the_o love_n of_o earthly_a thing_n after_o the_o example_n of_o the_o wicked_a for_o prosperity_n be_v as_o a_o flood_n which_o carry_v all_o thing_n with_o it_o and_o as_o well_o good_a as_o bad_a and_o therefore_o they_o be_v often_o carry_v away_o with_o the_o love_n of_o these_o outward_a thing_n but_o the_o child_n of_o god_n which_o do_v diligent_o labour_v after_o these_o thing_n they_o behave_v themselves_o so_o as_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v by_o their_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n
of_o covetous_a care_n consume_v they_o and_o that_o so_o strong_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n to_o be_v recover_v how_o be_v it_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v soak_a and_o soften_v they_o a_o little_a in_o the_o brine_n of_o affliction_n they_o be_v less_o stark_o and_o begin_v to_o yield_v there_o be_v a_o great_a change_n and_o wonderful_a alteration_n in_o they_o their_o lust_n be_v cool_v their_o wrath_n be_v pacify_v their_o concupiscence_n be_v abate_v their_o gluttony_n well_o temper_v their_o covetousness_n full_o satisfy_v their_o affection_n be_v so_o tame_v and_o their_o
