sincere 7 and his life safe from snares ¶ A psalm of David LORD I cry unto thee make Laste unto me give car unto my voice when I cry unto thee 2 Let my prayer be †Heb. directed set forth before thee as incense and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice 3 Set a watch O LORD before my mouth keep the door of my lips 4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity and let me not eat of their dainties 5 ‖ Or let the righteous smite me kindly and reprove me let not their pricious oyl break my head c. Let the righteous smite me it shall be a kindness and let him reprove me it shall be an excellent oyl which shall not break my head for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities 6 When their judges are overthrown in stony places they shall hear my words for they are sweet 7 Our bones are scattered at the graves mouth as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth 8 But mine eyes are unto thee O GOD the Lord in thee is my trust †Heb. make not my soul hers leave not my soul destitute 9 Keep me from the snare which they have said for me and the grins of the workers of iniquity 10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets whilest that I withal †Heb. pass over escape PSAL. CXLII David sheweth that in his trouble all his comfort was in prayer unto God ¶ ‖ Or A psalm of David giving instruction Maschil of David a prayer when he was in the cave I Cried unto the LORD with my voice with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication 2 I poured out my complaint before him I shewed before him my trouble 3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me then thou knewest my path in the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me 4 ‖ Or look 〈◊〉 the right hand and see I looked on my right hand and beheld but there was no man that would know me refuge †Heb. perished from me sailed me †Heb. no man sought after my soul no man cared for my soul 5 I cried unto thee O LORD I said Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living 6 Attend unto my cry for I am brought very low deliver me from my persecutours for they are stronger then I. 7 Bring my soul out of prison that I may praise thy name the righteous shall compass me about for thou shalt deal bountifully with me PSAL. CXLIII 1 David prayeth for favour in judgement 3 He complaineth of his griefs 5 He strengthneth his faith by meditation and prayer 7 He prayeth for grace 9 for deliverance 10 for sanctification 12 for destruction of his enemies ¶ A psalm of David HEar my prayer O LORD give ear to my supplications in thy faithfulness answer me and in thy righteousness 2 And enter not into judgement with thy servant for * Exod. 34.7 Rom. 3.20 Gal. 2.16 in thy sight shall no man living be justified 3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul he hath smitten my life down to the ground he hath made me to dwell in darkness as those that have been long dead 4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me my heart within me is desolate 5 I remember the days of old I meditate on all thy works I muse on the work of thy hands 6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee my soul thirsteth after thee as a thirsty land Selah 7 Hear me speedily O LORD my spirit saileth hide not thy face from me ‖ Or for I am become like c. lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit 8 Cause me to hear thy loving kindness in the morning for in thee do I trust cause me to know the way wherein I should walk for I lift up my soul unto thee 9 Deliver me O LORD from mine enemies I †Heb. hid me with thee flee unto thee to hide me 10 Teach me to do thy will for thou art my God thy spirit is good lead me into the land of uprightness 11 Quicken me O LORD for thy names sake for thy righteousness sake bring my soul out of trouble 12 And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies and destroy all them that afflict my soul for I am thy servant PSAL. Cast forth lightning and scatter them shoot out thine arrows and destroy them 7 Send thine †Heb. hands hand from above rid me and deliver me out of great waters from the hand of strange children 8 Whos 's mouth speaketh vanity and their right hand is a right hand of falshood 9 I will sing a new song unto thee O God upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee 10 It is be that giveth ‖ Or victory salvation unto kings who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword 11 Rid me and deliver me from the hand of strange children whose mouth speaketh vanity and their right hand is a right hand of falshood 12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth that our daughters may be as corner-stones †Heb. cut polished after the similitude of a palace 13 That our garners may be full affording †Heb. from kinde to kinde all manner of store that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets 14 That our oxen may be †Heb. able to hear burâ—eas or leaden with fiesh strong to labour that there be no breaking in nor going out that there be no complaining in our streets 15 * Psal 33.21 and 65 4. Happy is that people that is in such a case yea happy is that people whose God is the LORD PSAL. CXLV 1 David praiseth God for his fame 8 for his goodness
unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to

XI 3 The two witnesses prophesie 6 They have power to shut heaven that it ram not 7 The beast shall fight against them and kill them 8 They lie unburied 11 and after three days and an half rise again 14 The second wo is past 15 The seventh trumpet soundeth ANd there was given me a reed like unto a rod and the angel stood saying Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and them that worship therein 2 But the court which is without the temple †Gr. cast out leave out and measure it not for it is given unto the Gentiles and the holy city shall they tread under foot fourty and two moneths 3 And ‖ Or I will give unto my two witnesses that they may prophesie I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 4 These are the * Zech. 4.3.11.14 two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 5 And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 6 These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophesie and have power over waters to turn them to bloud and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an hall and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 10 And they that dwell upon the earn shall rejoyce over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to another because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth 11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entred into them and they stood upon their feet and great fear fell upon them which saw them 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them Come up hither And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earthquake ware slain †Gr. names of men of men seven thousand and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven 14 The second wo is past and behold the third wo cometh quickly 15 And the seventh angel sounded and there were great voices in heaven saying The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever 16 And the four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats fell upon their faces and worshipped God 17 Saying We give thee thanks O Lord God Almighty which art and wast and art to come because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned 18 And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come and the time of the dead that they should be judged and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets and to the saints and them that fear thy name small and great and shouldest destroy them which ‖ Or corrupt destroy the earth 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament and there were lightnings and voices and thundrings and an earthquake and great hail CHAP. XII 1 A woman clothed with the sun travaileth 4 The great red dragon standeth before her ready to devour her childe 6 when she was delivered she fleeth into the wilderness 7 Michael and his angels fight with the dragon and prevail 13 The dragon being cast down into the earth persecuteth the woman ANd there appeared a great ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars 2 And she being with childe cried travailing in birth and pained to be delivered 3 And there appeared another ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her childe assoon as it was born 5 And she brought forth a man-childe who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her childe was caught up unto God and to his throne 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days 7 And there was war in heaven Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels 8 And prevailed not neither was there place found any more in heaven 9 And the great dragon was cast out that
behold I have played the fool and have erred exceedingly 22 And David answered and said Behold the kings spear and let one of the young men come over and fetch it 23 The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORDS anointed 24 And behold as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD and let him deliver me out of all tribulation 25 Then Saul said to David Blessed be thou my son David thou shalt both do great things and also shalt still prevail So David went on his way and Saul returned to his place CHAP. XXVII 1 Saul bearing David to be in Gath seeketh no more for him 5 David beggeth Ziklag of Achish 8 He invading other countreys perswadeth Achish he fought against Judah ANd David said in his heart I shall now †Heb. be consumed perish one day by the hand of Saul there is nothing better for me then that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines and Saul shall despair of me to seek me any more in any coast of Israel so shall I escape out of his hand 2 And David arose and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish the son of Maoch king of Gath. 3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath he and his men every man with his houshold even David with his two wives Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the Carmelitess Nabals wife 4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath and he sought no more again for him 5 ¶ And David said unto Achish If I have now found grace in thine eyes let them give me a place in some town in the countrey that I may dwell there for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee 6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day 7 And †Heb. the number of days the time that David dwelt in the countrey of the Philistines was †Heb. a year of days a full year and four moneths 8 ¶ And David and his men went up and invaded the Geshurites and the ‖ Or Gerzites Gezrites and the Amalekites for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land as thou goest unto Shur even unto the land of Egypt 9 And David smote the land and left neither man nor woman alive and took away the sheep and the oxen and the asses and the camels and the apparel and returned and came to Achish 10 And Achish said ‖ Or Did you not make a rode c. Whither have ye made a rode to day And David said Against the south of Judah and against the south of the Jerahmeelites and against the south of the Kenites 11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive to bring tidings to Gath saying Lest they should tell on us laying So did David and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the countrey of the Philistines 12 And Achish beleeved David saying He hath made his people Israel †Heb. to sâ—â—nk utterly to abhor him therefore he shall be my servant for ever CHAP. XXVIII 1 Achish putteth confidence in David 3 Saul having destroyed the witches 4 and now in his fear forsaken of God 7 seeketh to a witch 9 The witch encouraged by Saul raiseth up Samuel 15 Saul hearing his ruine fainteth 21 The woman with his servants refresh him with meat ANd it came to pass in those days that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare to fight with Israel and Achish said unto David Know thou assuredly that thou shalt go out with me to battel thou and thy men 2 And David said to Achish Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do And Achish said to David Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever 3 ¶ Now * Chap. 25.1 Samuel was dead and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah even in his own city and Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land 4 ¶ And the Philistines gathered themselves together and came and pitched in Shunem and Saul gathered all Israel together and they pitched in Gilboa 5 And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines he was afraid and his heart greatly trembled 6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD the LORD answered him not neither by dreams nor by Urim nor by prophets 7 ¶ Then said Saul unto his servants Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit that I may go to her and enquire of her And his servants said to him Behold there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Eâ—dor 8 And Saul disguised himself and put on other raiment and he went and two men with him and they came to the woman by night and he said I pray thee divine unto me by the familiar spirit and bring me him up whom I shall name unto thee 9 And the woman said unto him Behold thou knowest what Saul hath done how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life to cause me to die 10 And Saul sware to her by the LORD saying As the LORD liveth there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing 11 Then said the woman Whom shall I bring up unto thee And he said Bring me up Samuel 12 And when the woman saw Samuel she cried with a loud voice and the woman spake to Saul saying Why hast thou deceived me for thou art Saul 13 And the king said unto her Be not afraid for what sawest thou And the woman said unto Saul I saw gods ascending out of the earth 14 And he said unto her †Heb. What is his form What form is he of And she said An old man cometh up and he is covered with a mantle And Saul perceived that it was Samuel and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed himself 15 ¶ And Samuel said to Saul Why hast thou disquieted me to bring me up And Saul answered I am sore distressed for the Philistines make war against me and God is departed from me and answereth me no more neither †Heb. by the hand of prophets by prophets nor by dreams therefore I have called thee that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do 16 Then said Samuel Wherefore then dost thou ask of me seeing the LORD is departed from thee and is become thine enemy 17 And the LORD hath done ‖ Or for himself to him * Ch. 15.28 as he spake by †Heb. mine hand me for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand and given it to thy

I will cause men to walk upon you even my people Israel and they shall possess thee and thou shalt be their inheritance and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them of men 13 Thus saith the Lord GOD Because they say unto you Thou land devourest up men and hast bereaved thy nations 14 Therefore thou shalt devour men no more neither ‖ Or cause to sell bereave thy nations any more saith the Lord GOD. 15 Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the heathen any more neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the people any more neither shalt thou cause thy nations to fall any more saith the Lord GOD. 16 ¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying 17 Son of man when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land they defiled it by their own way and by their doings their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman 18 Wherefore I poured my fury upon them for the bloud that they had shed upon the land and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it 19 And I scattered them among the heathen and they were dispersed through the countreys according to their way and according to their doings I judged them 20 And when they entred unto the heathen whither they went they * Isa 52.5 Rom. 2. â—4 profaned my holy name when they said to them These are the people of the LORD and are gone forth out of his land 21 ¶ But I had pity for mine holy name which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen whither they went 22 Therefore say unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD I do not this for your sakes O house of Israel but for mine holy names sake which ye have profaned among the heathen whither ye went 23 And I will sanctifie my great name which was profaned among the heathen which ye have profaned in the midst of them and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD saith the Lord GOD when I shall be sanctified in you before ‖ Or â—our their eyes 24 For I will take you from among the heathen and gather you out of all countreys and will bring you into your own land 25 ¶ Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you and ye shall be clean from all your all filthiness and from all your idols will I cleanse you 26 A * Jer. 32.39 Chap. 11.19 new heart also will I give you and a new spirit will I put within you and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you an heart of flesh 27 And I will put my * Chap. 11.19 spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and ye shall keep my judgements and do them 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers and ye shall be my people and I will be your God 29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses and I will call for the corn and will increase it and lay no famine upon you 30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen 31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways and your doings that were not good and shall lothe your selves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations 32 Not for your sakes do I this saith the Lord GOD be it known unto you be ashamed and confounded for your own ways O house of Israel 33 Thus saith the Lord GOD In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquines I will also cause you to dwell in the cities and the wastes shall be builded 34 And the desolate land shall be tilled whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by 35 And they shall say This land that was desolate is become like the garden of * Chap. 1â— 13 Eden and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced and are inhabited 36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places and plant that that was desolate I * Ch. 17.24 22.14 37.14 the LORD have spoken it and I will do it 37 Thus saith the Lord GOD I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel to do it for them I will increase them with men like a flock 38 As the †Heb. flock of holy things holy flock as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men and they shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XXXVII 1 By the resurrection of dry bones 11 the dead hope of Israel is revived 15 By the uniting of two sticks 18 is shewed the incorporation of Israel into Judah 20 The promises of Christs kingdom THe hand of the LORD was upon me and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones 2 And caused me to pass by them round about and behold there were very many in the open ‖ Or champion valley and lo they were very dry 3 And he said unto me Son of man can these bones live and I answered O Lord GOD thou knowest 4 Again he said unto me Prophesie upon these bones and say unto them O ye dry bones hear the word of the LORD 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones Behold I will cause breath to enter into you and ye shall live 6 And I will lay sinews upon you and will bring up flesh upon you and cover you with skin and put breath in you and ye shall live and ye shall know that I am the LORD 7 So I
Four manner of things appear good and evil life and death but the tongue ruleth over them continually 19 There is one that is wise and teacheth many and yet is unprofitable to himself 20 There is one that sheweth wisdom in words and is hated he shall be destitute of all ‖ Or wisdom food 21 For grace is not given him from the Lord because he is deprived of all wisdom 22 Another is wise to himself and the fruits of understanding are commendable in his mouth 23 A wise man instructeth his people and the fruits of his understanding fail not 24 A wise man shall be filled with blessing and all they that see him shall count him happy 25 The days of the life of man may be numbred but the days of Israel are innumerable 26 A wise man shall inherit ‖ Or are 〈…〉 glory among his people and his name shall be perpetual 27 My son prove thy soul in thy life and see what is evil for it and give not that unto it 28 For all things are not profitable for all men neither hath every soul pleasure in every thing 29 Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing nor too greedy upon meats 30 For ‖ Or variety of meats excess of meats bringeth sickness and surfeting will turn into choler 31 By surfeting have many perished but he that taketh heed prolongeth his life CHAP. XXXVIII 1 Honour due to the physician and why 16 How to weep and mourn for the deal 24 The wisdom of the learned man and of the labourer and artificer with the use of them both HOnour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which you may have of him for the Lord hath created him 2 For of the most High cometh healing and he shall receive ‖ Or a giâ—t honour of the king 3 The skill of the physician shall lift up his head and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration 4 The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth and he that is wise will not abhor them 5 * Exod. â—5 25 Was not the water made sweet with wood that the vertue thereof might be known 6 And he hath given men skill that he might be honoured in his marvellous works 7 With such doth he heal men and taketh away their pains 8 Of such doth the apothecary make a confection and of his works there is no end and from him is peace over all the earth 9 My son in thy sickness be not negligent but * Isa 38.2 pray unto the Lord and he will make thee whole 10 Leave off from sin and order thy hands aright and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness 11 Give a sweet savour and a memorial of fine flour and make a fat offering ‖ Or as a deed man as not being 12 Then give place to the physician for the Lord hath created him let him not go from thee for thou hast need of him 13 There is a time when in their hands there is good success 14 For they shall also pray unto the Lord that he would prosper that which they give for ease and ‖ Or â—â—ring remedy to prolong life 15 He that sinneth before his maker let him fall into the hand of the physician 16 My son let tears fall down over the dead and begin to lament as it thou hadst suffered great harm thy self and then cover his body according to the custom and neglect not his burial 17 Weep bitterly and make great moan and use lamentation as he is worthy and that a day or two lest thou be evil-spoken of and then comfort thy self for thy heaviness 18 Foâ— of heaviness cometh death and the heaviness of the * Pro. 15.13 17.22 heart breaketh strength 19 In affliction also sorrow remaineth and the life of the poor is the curse of the heart 20 Take no heaviness to heart drive it away and remember the last end 21 Forget it not for there is no turning again thou shalt not do him good but hurt thy self 22 Remember ‖ Or the sentence upon him my judgement for thine also shall be so yesterday for me and to day for thee 23 * 2 Sam. 33.20 When the dead is at rest let his remembrance rest and be comforted for him when his spirit is departed from him 24 The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure and he that hath little business shall become wise 25 How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plough and that glorieth in the goad that driveth oxen and is occupied in their labours and whose talk is †Gr. of the breed of bullocks of bullocks 26 He giveth his minde to make furrows and is diligent to give the kine â—odder 27 So every carpenter and work-master that laboureth night and day and they that cut and grave seals and are diligent to make great variety and give themselves to counterfeit imagery and watch to finish a work 28 The smith also sitting by the anvil and considering the iron work the vapour of the fire wasteth his flesh and he fighteth with the heat of the furnace the noise of the hammer and the anvil is ever in his ears and his eyes look still upon the pattern of the thing that he maketh he setteth his minde to finish his work and watcheth to polish it perfectly 29 So doth the potter sitting at his work and turning the wheel about with his feet who is alway carefully set at his work and maketh all his work by number 30 He fashioneth the clay with his arm and ‖ Or tempereth it with his feet boweth down his strength before his feet he applieth himself to lead it over and he is diligent to make clean the furnace 31 All these trust to their hands and every one is wise in his work 32 Without these cannot a city be inhabited and they shall not dwell where they will nor go up and down 33 They shall not be sought for in publick counsel nor sit high in the congregation they shall not sit on the judges seat nor understand the sentence of judgement they cannot declare justice and judgement and they shall not be found where parables are spoken 34 But they will maintain the state of the world and all their desire is in the work of their craft CHAP. XXXIX 1 A description of him that is truth wise 12 An exhortation to praise God for his works which are good to the good and evil to them that are evil BUt he that giveth his minde to the law of the most High and is occupied in the meditation thereof will seek out the wisdom of all the ancient and be occupied in prophecies 2 He will keep the sayings of the renowned men and where subtil parables are he will be there also 3 He will seek out the secrets of grave sentences and be conversant in dark parables 4 He shall serve among great men and appear before

III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2â— 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The

36 But I said unto you that ye also have seen me and beleeve not 37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out 38 For I came down from heaven not to do mine own will but the will of him that sent me 39 And this is the Fathers will which hath sent me that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing but should raise it up again at the last day 40 And this is the will of him that sent me that every one which seeth the Son and beleeveth on him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day 41 The Jews then murmured at him because he said I am the bread which came down from heaven 42 And they said * Mat. 23.55 Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph whose father and mother we know how is it then that he saith I came down from heaven 43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them Murmure not among yourselves 44 No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him and I will raise him up at the last day 45 * Is 54.13 Jer. 31.34 It is written in the prophets And they shall be all taught of God Every man therefore that hath heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me 46 Not that any man hath seen the Father * Mat. 11.27 save he which is of God he hath seen the Father 47 Verily verily I say unto you He that beleeveth on me hath everlasting life 48 I am that bread of life 49 Your fathere did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead 50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven if any man eat of this bread he shall live for ever and the bread that I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world 52 The Jews therefore strove amongst themselves saying How can this man give us his flesh to eat 53 Then Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blond ye have no life in you 54 Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my bloud hath eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day 55 For my flesh is meat indeed and my blond is drink indeed 56 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blond dwelleth in me and I in him 57 As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father so he that eateth me even he shall live by me 58 This is that bread which came down from heaven not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever 59 These things said he in the synagogue as he taught in Capernaum 60 Many therefore of his disciples when they had heard this said This is an hard saying who can hear it 61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it he said unto them Doth this offend you 62 * Chap. 3 1â— What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before 63 It is the spirit that quickneth the flesh profiteth nothing the words that I speak unto you they are spirit and they are life 64 But there are some of you that beleeve not For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that beleeved not and who should betray him 65 And he said Therefore said I unto you that no man can come unto me except it were given unto him of my Father 66 ¶ From that time many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve Will ye also go away 68 Then Simon Peter answered him Lord to whom shall we go thou hast the words of eternal life 69 * Mat. 16 1â— And we beleeve and are sure that thou art that Christ the Son of the living God 70 Jesus answered them Have not I chosen you twelve and one of you is a devil 71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon for he it was that should betray him being one of the twelve CHAP. that light being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus 12 And one Ananias a devout man according to the law having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there 13 Came unto me and stood and said unto me Brother Saul receive thy sight And the same hour I looked up upon him 14 And he said The God of our fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldest know his will and see that just one and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard 16 And now why tarriest thou arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass that when I was come again to Jerusalem even while I prayed in the temple I was in a trance 18 And saw him laying unto me Make haste and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me 19 And I said Lord they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that beleeved on thee 20 * Chap. 7.58 And when the bloud of thy martyr Stephen was shed I also was standing by and consenting unto his death and kept the raiment of them that slew him 21 And he said unto me Depart for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles 22 And they gave him audience unto this word and then lift up their voices and said Away with such a fellow from the earth for it is not sit that he should live 23 And as they cried out and cast off their clothes and threw dust into the air 24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle and bade that he should be examined by scourging that he might know wherefore they cried so against him 25 And as they bound him with thongs Paul said unto the centurion that stood by Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman and uncondemned 26 When the centurion heard that he went and told the chief captain saying Take heed what thou doest for this man is a Roman 27 Then the chief captain came and said unto him Tell me art thou a Roman He said Yea. 28 And the chief captain answered With a great sum obtained I this freedom And Paul said But I was free-born 29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have ‖ Or tortured him examined him and the chief captain also was afraid after he knew that he was a Roman and because he had bound him 30 On the morrow because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews he loosed him from his hands and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear and brought Paul down and set him before them CHAP. XXIII 3 As Paul pleadeth his cause 2 Ananias commandeth them to smite him 7 Dissension among his accusers 11 God encourageth him 14 The Jews laying wait for Paul 20 is declared unto the chief captain 27 He sendeth him to Felix the governour ANd Paul earnestly beholding the council said Men and brethren I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth 3 Then said Paul unto him God shall smite thee thou whited wall for fittest thou to judge me after the law and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law 4 And they that stood by said Revilest thou Gods high priest 5 Then said Paul I wilt not brethren that he was the high priest For it is written * Exod. 22.28 Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people 6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees he cried out in the council Men and brethren * Phil. 3.5 I am a Pharisee the son of a Pharisee * Ch. 24.21 of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question 7 And when he had so said There arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the multitude was divided 8 * Mat. 22.23 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection neither angel nor spirit but the Pharisees confess both 9 And there arose a great cry and the scripes that were of the Pharisees part arose and strove saying We finde no evil in this man but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him let us not fight against God 10 And when there arose a great dissension the chief captain fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them commanded the souldiers to go down and to take him by force from among them and to bring him into the castle 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him and said Be of good cheer Paul for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem so must thou bear witness also at Rome 12 And when it was day certain of the Jews banded together and bound themselves ‖ Or with an oath of execration under a curse saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul 13 And they were more then fourty which had made this conspiracy 14 And they came to the chief priests and elders and said We have bound our selves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul 15 Now therefore ye with the council signifie to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him and we or ever he come near are ready to kill him 16 And when Pauls sisters son heard of their lying in wait he went and entred into the castle and told Paul 17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him and said Bring this young man unto the chief captain for he hath a certain thing to tell him 18 So he took him and brought him to the chief captain and said Paul the prisoner called me unto him and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee who hath something to say unto thee 19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand and went with him aside privately and asked him What is that thou hast to tell me 20 And he said the Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly 21 But do not thou yeeld unto them for there lie in wait for him of them mo then fourty men which have bound themselves with an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him and now are they ready looking for a promise from thee 22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart and charged him See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me 23 And he called unto him two centurions saying Make ready two hundred souldiers
And unto the married I command yet not I but the Lord * Matth. 9.32 19.9 Mark 10.11 Luke 16.18 Let not the wife depart from her husband 11 But and if she depart let her remain unmarried or he reconciled to her husband and let not the husband put away his wife 12 But to the rest speak I not the Lord If any brother hath a wife that beleeveth not and she be pleased to dwell with him let him not put her away 13 And the woman which hath an husband that beleeveth not and if he be pleased to dwell with her let her not leave him 14 For the unbeleeving husband is sanctified by the wife and the unbeleeving wife is sanctified by the husband else were your children unclean but now are they holy 15 But if the unbeleeving depart let him depart A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases but God hath called us †Gr. in peace to peace 16 For what knowest thou O wife whether thou shalt save thy husband or how knowest thou O man whether thou shalt save thy wife 17 But as God hath distributed to every man as the Lord hath called every one so let him walk and so ordain I in all churches 18 Is any man called being circumcised let him not become uncircumcised is any called in uncircumcision let him not become circumcised 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God 20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called 21 Art thou called being a servant care not for it but if thou mayest be made free use it rather 22 For he that is called in the Lord being a servant is the Lords †Gr. made free free-man likewise also lie that is called being free is Christs servant 23 * Chap. 6.20 Ye are bought with a price be not ye the servants of men 24 Brethren let every man wherein he is called therein abide with God 25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord yet I give my judgement as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful 26 I suppose therefore that this is good for the present ‖ Or necessity distress I say that it is good for a man so to be 27 Art thou bound unto a wife seek not to be loosed Art thou loosed from a wife seek not a wife 28 But and if thou marry thou hast not sinned and if a virgin marry she hath not sinned nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh but I spare you 29 But this I say brethren the time is short It remaineth that both they that have wives be as though they had none 30 And they that weep as though they wept not and they that rejoyce as though they rejoyced not and they that buy as though they possessed not 31 And they that use this world as not abusing it for the fashion of this world passeth away 32 But I would have you without carefulness He that is unmarried careth for the things the belong to the Lord how he may please the Lord 33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world how he may please his wife 34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord that she may be holy both in body and in spirit but she that is married careth for the things of the world how she may please her husband 35 And this I speak for your own profit not that I may cast a snare upon you but for that which is comely and that you may attend upon the Lord without distraction 36 But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin if she pass the flower of her age and need so require let him do what he will he sinneth not let them marry 37 Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart having no necessity but hath power over his own will and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin doeth well 38 So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better 39 * Rom. ◠2 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth but if her husband be dead she is at liberty to be married to whom she will onely in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide after my judgement and I think also that I have the Spirit of God CHAP. VIII 1 To abstain from meats offered to idols 8 9 We must not abuse our Christian liberty to the offence of our brethren 11 but must bridle our knowledge with charity NOw as touching things offered unto idols we know that we all have knowledge Knowledge puffeth up but charity edifieth 2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know 3 But if any man love God the same is known of him 4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols we know that * Chap. 10.19 an idol is nothing in the world and that there is none other God but one 5 For though there be that are called gods whether in heaven or in earth as there be gods many and lords many 6 But to us there is but one God the Father of whom are all things and we ‖ Or for him Rom. 11.36 in him and one Lord Jesus Christ by whom are all things and we by him 7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol and their conscience being weak is defiled 8 But meat commendeth us not to God for neither if we eat ‖ Or have we the more are we the better neither if we eat not ‖ Or have we the less are we the worse 9 But take heed lest by any means this ‖ Or power liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak 10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idols temple shall not the conscience of him that is weak be †Gr edified emboldned to eat those things which are offered to idols 11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish for whom Christ died 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren and wound their weak conscience ye sin against Christ 13 Wherefore * Rom. 14.21 if meat make my brother to offend I will eat no flesh while the world standeth lest I make my brother to offend CHAP. IX 1 He sheweth his liberty 7 and that the minister ought to live by the gospel 15 yet that himself hath of his own accord abstained 18 to be either chargeable unto them 22 or offensive unto any in matters indifferent 14 Our life is like unto
them that perish 16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death to the other the savour of life unto life and who is sufficient for these things 17 For we are not as many which ‖ Or deal deceitfully with * Chap. 4.2 corrupt the word of God but as of sincerity but as of God in the sight of God speak we in Christ CHAP. III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail untâ—ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the â—ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of †Or. shâ—me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11â— 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in expâ—ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of

II. 1 By comparing what we were by 3 nature with what we are 5 by grace 10 he declareth that we are made for good works and 13 being brought near by Christ should not live as 1â— Gentiles and 12 foreiners in time past but as 19 citizens with the saints and the family of God ANd * Col. 2.13 you hath be quickned who were dead in trespasses and sins 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling †Gr. the wills the desires of the flesh and of the minde and were by nature the children of wrath even as others 4 But God who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us 5 Even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved 6 And hath raised as up together and made as sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God 9 Not of works lest any man should boast 10 For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ‖ Or prepared ordained that we should walk in them 11 Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands 12 That at that time ye were without Christ being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no hope and without God in the world 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the bloud of Christ 14 For he is our peace who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man so making peace 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity ‖ Or in himself thereby 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off and to to them that were nigh 18 For * Rom. 5.2 through him we both have an access by one

IV. 1 He exhorteth them to cease from sin by the example of Christ and the consideration of the general end that now approacheth 12 and comforteth them against persecution FOrasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh arm your selves likewise with the same minde for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men but to the will of God 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness lusts excess of wine revellings banquettings and abominable idolatries 4 Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot speaking evil of you 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead 6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit 7 But the end of all things is at hand be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer 8 And above all things have fervent charity among your selves for * Pr. 1â— 12 charity ‖ Or will shall cover the multitude of sins 9 * Rom. 12.13 Heb. 13.2 Use hospitality one to another without grudging 10 * Rom. 12.6 As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God 11 If any man speak let him speak as the oracles of God if any man minister let him do it as of the ability which God giveth that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever Amen 12 Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you as though some strange thing happened unto you 13 But rejoyce in as much as ye are partakers or Christs sufferings that when his glory shall be revealed ye may be glad also with exceeding joy 14 * Mat. â— 11 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ happy are ye for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you on their part he is evil spoken of but on your part he is glorified 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or as a thief or as an evil-doer or as a busie-body in other mens matters 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian let him not be ashamed but let him glorifie God on this behalf 17 For the time is come that judgement must begin at the house of God and if it first begin at us what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God 18 * Pr. 11.31 And if the righteous scarcely be saved where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well-doing as unto a faithful Creatour CHAP. V. 1 He exhorteth the elders to feed their flocks 5 the younger to obey 8 and all to be sober
If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 12 Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the saith of Jesus 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ‖ Or from henceforth saith the Spirit Yea. from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 14 And I looked and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle 15 And another angel came out of the temple crying with a load voice to him that sat on the cloud * Joel 3.13 Thrust in thy sickle and reap for the time is come for thee to reap for the harvest of the earth is ‖ Or dried ripe 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven he also having a sharp sickle 18 And another angel came out from the altar which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great wine-press of the wrath of God 20 And the wine-press was troden without the city and bloud came out of the wine-press even unto the horse-bridles by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs CHAP. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP. XVI 2 The angels pour out thrir vials full of wrath 6 The plagues that follow thereupon 15 Christ cometh as a thief Blessed are they that watch ANd I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels Go your ways and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth 2 And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth and there fell a noisom and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast and upon them which worshipped his image 3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the bloud of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea 4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters and they became bloud 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say Thou art righteous O Lord which art and wast and shalt be because thou hast judged thus 6 For they have shed the bloud of saints and prophets and thou hast given them bloud to drink for they are worthy 7 And I heard another out of the altar say Even so Lord God Almighty true and righteous are thy judgements 8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire 9 And men were ‖ Or burned scorched with great heat and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues and they repented not to give him glory 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness and they gnawed their tongues for pain 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds 12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14 For they are the spirits of devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 15 * Matth. 24.43 Chap. 3 3◠Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying it is done 18 And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 19 And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great
the flesh to live after the flesh 13 For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die but if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the * Gal. 4.6 Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 16 The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 17 And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity not willingly but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope 21 Because the creature it self also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God 22 For we know that ‖ Or every creature the whole creation groaneth and travelleth in pain together until now 23 And not only they but our selves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit even we our selves groan within our selves waiting for the adoption to wit the * Luke 21.28 redemption of our body 24 For we are saved by hope But hope that is seen is not hope for what a man seeth why doth he yet hope for 25 But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit it self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the minde of the Spirit ‖ Or that because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose 29 For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called and whom he called them he also justified and whom he justified them he also glorified 31 What shall we then say to these things If God be for us who can be against us 32 He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth 34 Who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the right hand of God who also maketh intercession for us 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword 36 As it is written * Psal 44.22 For thy sake we are killed all the day long we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter 37 Nay in all these things we are more then conquerers through him that loved us 38 For I am perswaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come 39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHAP. IX 1 Paul is sorry for the Jews 7 All the seed of Abraham were not the children of the promise 18 God hath mercy upon whom he will 21 The potter may do with his clay what he list 25 The calling of the Gentiles and rejecting of the Jews were foretold 32 The cause why so few Jews embraced the righteousness of faith I Say the truth in Christ I lie not my conscience also bearing me witness in the holy Ghost 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart 3 For I could wish that myself were ‖ Or separated accursed from Christ for my brethren my kinsmen according to the flesh 4 Who are Israelites to whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory and the ‖ Or testaments covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises 5 Whose are the fathers and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all God blessed for ever Amen 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect For they are not all Israel which are of Israel 7 Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children but in * Gen. 21.12 Isaac shall thy seed be called 8 That is They which are the children of the flesh these are not the children of God but * Gal. 4.28 the children of the promise are counted for the seed 9 For this is the word of promise * Gen 18.10 At this time will I come and Sara shall have a son 10 And not onely this but when Rebecca also had conceived by one even by our father Isaac 11 For the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil that the purpose of God according to election might stand not of works but of him that calleth 12 It was said unto her The * Gen. 25.23 ‖ Or greater elder shall serve the ‖ Or lesser younger 13 As it is written * Mal. 1.2 3.
