real_o reason_n can_v see_v and_o discourse_v about_o word_n and_o proposition_n and_o behold_v thing_n by_o report_n and_o so_o deduct_v one_o thing_n from_o another_o but_o the_o spirit_n make_v a_o man_n see_v the_o thing_n themselves_o real_o wrap_v up_o in_o those_o word_n the_o spirit_n bring_v spiritual_a thing_n as_o well_o as_o notion_n before_o a_o man_n eye_n the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v like_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n it_o make_v all_o thing_n appear_v as_o they_o be_v john_n 3.20_o 21._o it_o be_v jerusalem_n misery_n she_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o christ_n and_o they_o be_v not_o hide_v from_o they_o but_o the_o thing_n of_o her_o peace_n shut_v up_o in_o those_o word_n be_v hide_v from_o her_o eye_n 4â—_n discourse_v with_o many_o a_o man_n about_o his_o melt_v and_o he_o weep_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o what_o be_v the_o end_n of_o conviction_n be_v it_o not_o compunction_n for_o if_o the_o lord_n shall_v let_v a_o man_n see_v his_o sin_n and_o death_n for_o sin_n and_o yet_o suffer_v the_o heart_n to_o remain_v hard_a and_o unaffected_a the_o lord_n do_v but_o leave_v he_o without_o excuse_n nay_o the_o lord_n shall_v but_o leave_v he_o under_o great_a misery_n &_o under_o a_o more_o fearful_a judgement_n viz._n for_o a_o man_n to_o see_v and_o know_v his_o sin_n and_o yet_o unaffected_a with_o it_o and_o harden_v under_o it_o the_o float_n in_o the_o understanding_n and_o be_v imprison_v there_o no_o very_o but_o that_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v thorough_o and_o deep_o affect_v therewith_o and_o do_v you_o think_v the_o lord_n will_v in_o the_o light_n of_o conviction_n imprison_v it_o up_o in_o the_o mind_n be_v there_o not_o a_o far_a end_n that_o by_o this_o light_n the_o heart_n may_v be_v deep_o affect_v with_o sin_n if_o any_o say_v that_o the_o end_n of_o conviction_n be_v to_o drive_v the_o soul_n to_o christ_n i_o grant_v that_o be_v the_o remote_a and_o last_o end_n of_o it_o but_o the_o next_o end_n be_v compunction_n for_o if_o the_o understanding_n be_v convince_v of_o misery_n and_o the_o heart_n remain_v hard_a the_o mind_n may_v see_v indeed_o that_o righteousness_n and_o life_n only_o be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o christ_n yet_o the_o heart_n remain_v hard_a the_o will_n and_o affection_n will_v never_o stir_v towards_o christ_n its_o impossible_a a_o hard_a heart_n remain_v such_o whole_o unaffected_a with_o sin_n or_o misery_n shall_v be_v true_o affect_v with_o jesus_n christ_n but_o of_o this_o more_o hereafter_o what_o necessity_n be_v there_o of_o this_o compunction_n to_o succeed_v conviction_n answ._n i_o speak_v now_o of_o necessity_n in_o way_n of_o ordinary_a dispensation_n not_o of_o god_n unusual_a and_o extraordinary_a way_n of_o work_v where_o he_o use_v iron_n must_v enter_v not_o only_o into_o his_o leg_n but_o into_o his_o soul_n psal._n 105.18_o he_o must_v be_v more_o afflict_a in_o spirit_n because_o he_o be_v to_o do_v great_a work_n for_o god_n and_o be_v to_o be_v raise_v up_o high_a than_o the_o rest_n and_o therefore_o do_v need_v the_o more_o ballast_n some_o be_v educate_v more_o civil_o than_o other_o and_o thereby_o have_v contract_v less_o guilt_n and_o stoutness_n of_o heart_n
and_o death_n for_o sin_n that_o this_o end_n may_v be_v attain_v gal._n 3.22_o and_o therefore_o feel_v of_o sin_n and_o death_n and_o misery_n be_v the_o mean_n must_v precede_v the_o other_o as_o the_o end_n and_o therefore_o as_o grace_n may_v be_v see_v by_o conviction_n of_o misery_n so_o the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o only_o can_v be_v feel_v by_o feel_a misery_n in_o this_o work_n of_o compunction_n quest._n but_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v this_o compunction_n and_o wherein_o do_v it_o consist_v this_o be_v the_o three_o particular_a to_o be_v open_v answ._n in_o general_a it_o be_v whereby_o the_o soul_n be_v affect_v with_o sin_n and_o make_v sensible_a of_o sin_n but_o more_o particular_o compunction_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o prick_n of_o the_o heart_n or_o the_o wound_n of_o the_o soul_n with_o such_o fear_n and_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o misery_n as_o sever_v the_o soul_n from_o sin_n and_o from_o go_v on_o towards_o its_o eternal_a misery_n so_o that_o it_o consist_v in_o three_o thing_n 1._o fear_n 2._o sorrow_n 3._o separation_n from_o sin_n the_o lord_n jesus_n when_o he_o come_v to_o rescue_v his_o elect_a look_v as_o satan_n hold_v they_o in_o their_o misery_n first_o by_o blind_a their_o eye_n from_o see_v of_o it_o second_o by_o harden_v their_o heart_n from_o feel_v of_o it_o so_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v cut_v asunder_o the_o first_o cord_n of_o satan_n by_o conviction_n break_v asunder_o the_o second_o by_o compunction_n and_o cause_v the_o soul_n to_o feel_v and_o be_v affect_v with_o its_o misery_n and_o as_o the_o whole_a soul_n be_v unaffected_a before_o he_o come_v so_o he_o make_v the_o whole_a soul_n sensible_a when_o he_o come_v and_o therefore_o he_o sil_n the_o conscience_n with_o fear_n and_o the_o heart_n with_o sorrow_n and_o mourning_n so_o as_o now_o the_o will_n of_o sin_n be_v break_v which_o be_v harden_v before_o these_o fear_n and_o sorrow_n seize_v upon_o it_o let_v i_o open_v these_o particular_o that_o you_o may_v taste_v and_o try_v the_o truth_n of_o what_o now_o i_o deliver_v i_o sâ—y_v the_o lord_n christ_n in_o this_o work_n of_o compunction_n let_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o secure_a sinner_n a_o marvellous_a fear_n and_o terror_n of_o the_o direful_a displeasure_n of_o god_n of_o death_n and_o hell_n the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n oh_o belove_a look_v the_o remedy_n that_o be_v true_a but_o you_o must_v also_o first_o preach_v the_o woe_n and_o misery_n of_o man_n or_o rather_o so_o mix_v they_o together_o as_o the_o heart_n of_o hearer_n may_v be_v deep_o affect_v with_o both_o but_o first_o with_o their_o misery_n it_o argue_v a_o great_a consumption_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n when_o christian_n live_v be_v preserve_v only_o by_o alchermy_n and_o choice_a cordial_n notion_n about_o christ_n nay_o choice_a one_o too_o or_o else_o the_o old_a and_o ordinary_a food_n of_o the_o country_n will_v not_o down_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o main_a wound_n of_o christian_n be_v want_v of_o deep_a humiliation_n and_o casting_n down_o and_o if_o you_o believe_v it_o not_o now_o it_o may_v be_v pestilence_n sword_n and_o famine_n shall_v vary_v from_o our_o compass_n in_o such_o expression_n in_o the_o word_n in_o these_o day_n for_o their_o faith_n then_o be_v exemplary_a to_o we_o now_o but_o because_o the_o word_n do_v more_o
