consider_v a_o few_o particular_n 1._o if_o you_o suppose_v that_o god_n take_v in_o any_o part_n of_o your_o faith_n 5._o repentance_n new-obedience_n or_o sanctification_n as_o a_o ground_n upon_o which_o he_o justify_v or_o forgive_v you_o gratia_fw-la you_o be_v absolute_o against_o the_o word_n for_o if_o it_o be_v of_o work_n it_o be_v no_o more_o of_o grace_n 6_o otherwise_o work_n be_v no_o more_o work_n 2._o it_o must_v then_o be_v only_o the_o evidence_n of_o your_o be_v justify_v that_o you_o seek_v for_o in_o your_o sanctification_n these_o two_o thing_n thus_o premise_v i_o proceed_v 1._o we_o must_v allow_v any_o believer_n to_o take_v in_o any_o thing_n of_o his_o sanctification_n to_o help_v his_o assurance_n which_o the_o word_n allow_v of_o as_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o that_o be_v to_o say_v repentance_n mortification_n of_o sin_n new_a obedience_n etc._n etc._n but_o than_o it_o
now_o decay_a poor_a heart_n i_o will_v have_v thou_o consider_v these_o five_o thing_n viz._n 1._o the_o ground_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v god_n in_o his_o word_n 7_o and_o not_o our_o sight_n and_o feel_n that_o be_v sensual_a 7_o we_o live_v not_o by_o sight_n 20._o but_o by_o faith_n in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n 2._o consider_v that_o as_o long_o as_o thou_o maintaine_v fear_n &_o jealousy_n of_o god_n love_n unto_o thou_o 6_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n if_o thy_o condition_n be_v no_o better_o than_o it_o be_v 17_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o day_n of_o old_a 1_o and_o remember_v that_o with_o god_n be_v no_o variableness_n nor_o shadow_n of_o turn_v 3_o who_o he_o love_v 17_o he_o love_v for_o ever_o 8_o his_o love_n be_v a_o everlasting_a love_n 2._o and_o remember_v that_o a_o poor_a believer_n consolation_n depend_v not_o so_o much_o upon_o his_o know_a christ_n as_o upon_o this_o that_o we_o be_v know_v of_o he_o and_o hold_v fast_o by_o he_o who_o have_v take_v the_o charge_n of_o we_o 3._o a_o child_n of_o god_n may_v decay_v in_o part_n sight_n feeling_n and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n 10_o these_o be_v sometime_o more_o and_o sometime_o less_o as_o god_n see_v best_a that_o we_o may_v rest_v and_o rely_v upon_o christ_n alone_o 5._o the_o grace_n accompany_v salvation_n no_o saint_n shall_v ever_o lose_v but_o a_o present_a sensible_a and_o continual_a exercise_n of_o any_o grace_n god_n have_v not_o promise_v the_o exercise_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o saint_n ebb_n and_o flow_v the_o lord_n often_o withdraw_v the_o exercise_n of_o one_o grace_n that_o so_o another_o may_v shine_v forth_o with_o the_o great_a lustre_n 7_o and_o that_o we_o may_v in_o faith_n and_o humility_n depend_v up_o on_o he_o who_o be_v the_o rock_n of_o our_o strength_n and_o spirit_n and_o the_o flesh_n but_o between_o my_o corrupt_a will_n and_o my_o enlighten_v conscience_n it_o be_v grant_v that_o every_o opposition_n or_o strive_v in_o man_n be_v not_o from_o the_o antipathy_n between_o christ_n and_o satan_n or_o the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n which_o reciprocal_o lust_n against_o each_o other_o yet_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o antipathy_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n and_o of_o the_o corrupt_a will_n and_o enlighten_v conscience_n be_v very_o discernible_a 1._o the_o natural_a conscience_n though_o enlighten_v act_v only_o in_o a_o natural_a way_n at_o the_o most_o it_o be_v but_o moral_a as_o not_o to_o lie_v steal_v swear_v etc._n etc._n 2._o it_o stir_v not_o unless_o force_v and_o then_o unto_o that_o only_o whereunto_o it_o be_v force_v as_o a_o justice_n of_o the_o peace_n have_v issue_v forth_o his_o warrant_n to_o a_o drunken_a constable_n to_o search_v for_o drunkard_n this_o constable_n dare_v do_v no_o other_o then_o search_n for_o they_o though_o his_o heart_n be_v with_o they_o 3._o conscience_n enlighten_v strike_v only_o at_o the_o branch_n but_o not_o at_o the_o root_n of_o sin_n 4._o it_o set_v one_o faculty_n against_o another_o as_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n against_o the_o understanding_n first_o but_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n cause_v a_o opposition_n in_o the_o same_o faculty_n as_o in_o the_o will_n etc._n etc._n 2._o the_o spiritâ—_n of_o christ_n make_v a_o free_a full_a constant_a and_o impartial_a resistance_n against_o all_o sin_n 3._o it_o discover_v to_o the_o soul_n her_o secret_a corruption_n in_o their_o colour_n this_o spirit_n overpower_v the_o soul_n cause_v it_o to_o hate_v sin_n and_o leave_v it_o 4._o this_o spirit_n cause_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o glad_a by_o how_o much_o sin_n be_v the_o more_o discover_v 5._o it_o teach_v the_o soul_n to_o oppose_v all_o sin_n even_o the_o appearance_n of_o evil_n equal_o proportionable_o and_o orderly_o 6._o this_o spirit_n teach_v the_o soul_n not_o to_o turn_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n into_o encouragement_n to_o sin_n i_o can_v pray_v nor_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a
