well_o and_z with_o clearness_n of_o apprehension_n stand_v with_o the_o spirit_n be_v the_o first_o author_n of_o yea_o and_o the_o principal_a actor_n in_o they_o only_o it_o imply_v that_o he_o work_v none_o of_o these_o spiritual_a or_o heavenly_a thing_n within_o we_o irresistible_o or_o whether_o we_o will_v or_o no._n and_o therefore_o second_o such_o attribution_n of_o subserviency_n unto_o man_n as_o these_o do_v no_o way_n prove_v or_o so_o much_o
any_o angel_n or_o spirit_n that_o he_o proceed_v out_o of_o or_o from_o god_n the_o father_n then_o haply_o this_o will_v not_o prove_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o god_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n whereas_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v thing_n that_o be_v most_o rational_a and_o of_o a_o elevate_a nature_n unto_o those_o who_o understand_v they_o who_o element_n they_o be_v who_o be_v verse_v in_o the_o traverse_v of_o such_o curious_a question_n and_o mysterious_a speculation_n i_o say_v they_o be_v most_o rational_a unto_o they_o and_o admit_v of_o the_o most_o curious_a debate_n but_o that_o which_o in_o the_o general_n may_v satisfy_v the_o mean_a capacity_n concern_v the_o three_o in_o one_o we_o may_v thus_o conceive_v that_o according_a to_o the_o nature_n essence_n or_o simple_a be_v of_o every_o thing_n whatsoever_o such_o likewise_o be_v the_o modus_fw-la or_o manner_n of_o that_o respective_a be_v for_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o have_v a_o simple_a be_v but_o it_o have_v a_o modus_fw-la or_o a_o particular_a manner_n of_o be_v according_a to_o which_o it_o be_v or_o have_v its_o subsistence_n now_o this_o modus_fw-la or_o manner_n of_o be_v or_o subsistence_n take_v it_o where_o you_o will_v it_o always_o follow_v the_o be_v as_o the_o shadow_n do_v the_o body_n or_o substance_n who_o it_o be_v for_o essence_n or_o be_v be_v one_o thing_n but_o the_o manner_n of_o its_o subsistence_n this_o be_v another_o if_o you_o can_v so_o well_o consent_n unto_o this_o at_o the_o first_o view_n yet_o you_o will_v find_v upon_o a_o diligent_a enquiry_n that_o the_o notion_n be_v true_a viz._n that_o every_o thing_n have_v a_o manner_n of_o be_v as_o well_o as_o a_o be_v itself_o and_o that_o this_o modus_fw-la or_o manner_n of_o be_v be_v something_o which_o be_v distinct_a from_o the_o essence_n or_o be_v itself_o now_o then_o look_v as_o thing_n be_v more_o excellent_a in_o their_o simple_a essence_n and_o nature_n so_o have_v they_o a_o more_o excellent_a modus_fw-la or_o manner_n of_o be_v than_o such_o thing_n who_o nature_n and_o essence_n be_v beneath_o and_o less_o noble_a and_o excellent_a in_o the_o order_n of_o creature_n so_o now_o if_o we_o shall_v carry_v up_o this_o rule_n or_o principle_n unto_o god_n and_o apply_v it_o unto_o his_o essence_n and_o be_v it_o will_v be_v no_o manner_n of_o offence_n to_o any_o man_n reason_n and_o understanding_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o comprehend_v how_o or_o after_o what_o manner_n the_o divine_a nature_n and_o essence_n do_v subsist_v because_o his_o essence_n be_v so_o infinite_o above_o and_o differ_v from_o all_o create_a essence_n or_o being_n otherwise_o we_o shall_v conceive_v rude_o of_o god_n and_o pollute_v his_o nature_n and_o bring_v he_o down_o from_o what_o he_o be_v and_o mingle_v he_o among_o finite_a and_o limit_a creature_n if_o we_o shall_v seek_v for_o any_o parallel_n or_o likeness_n of_o his_o be_v and_o if_o so_o than_o we_o must_v conceive_v that_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o be_v be_v of_o the_o same_o kind_n and_o commensurable_a unto_o his_o be_v itself_o a_o peculiar_a and_o appropriate_a manner_n of_o subsist_v which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v parallel_v in_o the_o subsistence_n of_o any_o finite_a be_v whatsoever_o and_o beside_o we_o have_v the_o help_n and_o light_n of_o scripture_n to_o help_v we_o in_o this_o namely_o to_o find_v out_o what_o manner_n of_o subsistence_n this_o be_v that_o be_v one_o in_o three_o this_o i_o say_v we_o have_v from_o the_o scripture_n and_o though_o some_o man_n do_v undertake_v to_o make_v it_o to_o be_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v very_o agreeable_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n that_o be_v in_o man_n to_o cnceive_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o a_o subsistence_n in_o the_o divine_a nature_n yet_o for_o this_o we_o shall_v not_o undertake_v nor_o advance_v so_o high_a in_o such_o a_o mystery_n as_o this_o be_v only_o this_o be_v clear_a and_o the_o foundation_n be_v as_o a_o rock_n under_o our_o foot_n that_o there_o must_v be_v a_o peculiar_a modus_fw-la or_o manner_n of_o tubsistence_n appropriate_a to_o the_o divine_a essence_n or_o be_v which_o do_v not_o parallel_n nor_o can_v be_v match_v by_o the_o whole_a creation_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v thus_o as_o well_o as_o any_o otherwise_o i_o think_v be_v as_o clear_a as_o the_o other_o for_o whatsoever_o you_o will_v imagine_v or_o whatsoever_o your_o understanding_n shall_v project_v unto_o you_o to_o be_v the_o peculiar_a manner_n of_o this_o subsistence_n most_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o it_o will_v be_v as_o hard_a to_o explain_v and_o bring_v it_o down_o to_o the_o capacity_n and_o apprehension_n of_o man_n as_o the_o be_v itself_o which_o be_v infinite_a or_o as_o the_o subsistence_n of_o three_o in_o one._n sect._n 12_o i_o shall_v only_o add_v a_o few_o more_o testimony_n from_o the_o scripture_n wherein_o the_o deity_n or_o godhead_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shine_v as_o light_v at_o the_o noon_n day_n and_o then_o proceed_v to_o show_v the_o fallacy_n and_o other_o weakness_n of_o those_o pretence_n wherein_o our_o adversary_n rejoice_v so_o much_o as_o if_o they_o be_v argument_n above_o answer_n and_o so_o put_v a_o end_n to_o our_o present_a debate_n the_o first_o scripture_n shall_v be_v joh._n 20.22_o and_o when_o he_o have_v say_v this_o he_o breathe_v on_o they_o and_o say_v unto_o they_o receive_v you_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o soever_o sin_n you_o remit_v they_o be_v remit_v unto_o they_o and_o who_o soever_o sin_n you_o retain_v they_o be_v retain_v first_o when_o christ_n breathe_v upon_o his_o disciple_n say_v unto_o they_o receive_v you_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v it_o tolerable_a to_o imagine_v that_o his_o meaning_n shall_v be_v receive_v you_o a_o angel_n or_o the_o supreme_a angel_n that_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v by_o way_n of_o spiration_n or_o breathe_a i.e._n the_o ineffable_a and_o inexplicable_a manner_n of_o his_o proceed_n among_o all_o create_a thing_n or_o thing_n intelligible_a unto_o man_n be_v best_a resemble_v by_o or_o come_v near_a unto_o a_o spiration_n or_o breathe_n partly_o also_o because_o as_o the_o original_n or_o first_o cause_n and_o so_o likewise_o that_o which_o become_v of_o the_o wind_n or_o that_o which_o be_v do_v by_o the_o wind_n be_v very_o secret_a unto_o man_n so_o be_v the_o first_o spring_n or_o original_n of_o the_o spirit_n enter_v or_o come_v into_o man_n as_o likewise_o the_o end_n which_o the_o spirit_n make_v with_o man_n into_o who_o he_o come_v be_v great_a secret_n hide_a mystery_n unto_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n very_o hard_o and_o dissicult_a and_o of_o a_o abstruse_a definition_n and_o demonstration_n this_o our_o saviour_n joh._n 3.8_o describe_v by_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o wind_n the_o wind_n blow_v where_o it_o list_v and_o thou_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o but_o can_v not_o tell_v whence_o it_o come_v nor_o whither_o it_o go_v so_o be_v every_o one_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v very_o likely_a that_o god_n make_v this_o same_o material_a world_n in_o such_o a_o shape_n as_o he_o have_v now_o do_v and_o such_o and_o such_o creature_n as_o now_o be_v make_v and_o so_o such_o law_n for_o these_o creature_n to_o act_n and_o move_v by_o and_o
if_o you_o bring_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n into_o your_o soul_n you_o shall_v by_o one_o and_o the_o same_o act_n as_o it_o be_v expel_v and_o drive_v out_o all_o that_o retinue_n even_o as_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o temple_n drive_v out_o those_o that_o buy_v and_o sell_v and_o the_o money_n changer_n just_o thus_o will_v be_v the_o come_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o power_n and_o in_o glory_n in_o your_o soul_n he_o will_v chase_v away_o from_o before_o his_o face_n all_o that_o rabble_n of_o evil_a doer_n your_o unclean_a lust_n and_o desire_n your_o foolish_a froward_a and_o proud_a disposition_n and_o distemper_n of_o soul_n now_o consider_v a_o little_a of_o how_o great_a and_o sacred_a a_o consequence_n such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o be_v to_o have_v the_o temple_n of_o your_o heart_n of_o your_o inner_a man_n thus_o purge_v and_o rid_v of_o such_o polluter_n and_o prophaner_n of_o their_o dignity_n excellency_n and_o peace_n my_o brethren_n man_n and_o woman_n live_v as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o fulfil_n and_o satisfy_v of_o their_o lust_n and_o unclean_a desire_n they_o be_v afraid_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o make_v a_o life_n of_o their_o continuance_n in_o the_o world_n and_o be_v in_o the_o body_n unless_o they_o take_v pleasure_n in_o such_o thing_n and_o in_o such_o way_n unless_o they_o satisfy_v such_o and_o such_o desire_n whereas_o alas_o be_v they_o but_o free_a from_o the_o inordinacy_n of_o their_o desire_n their_o satisfy_n and_o gratification_n will_v be_v rather_o matter_n of_o burden_n trouble_n and_o cumber_v to_o they_o than_o any_o otherwise_o as_o person_n that_o have_v the_o itch_n it_o be_v a_o pleasure_n to_o they_o to_o scratch_v but_o when_o the_o distemper_n in_o the_o skin_n be_v take_v away_o no_o man_n complain_v that_o he_o want_v his_o former_a pleasure_n of_o scratch_v even_o so_o whilst_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v lade_v with_o lust_n pride_n covetousness_n uncleaness_n and_o give_v to_o pleasure_n it_o be_v little_o less_o than_o a_o death_n to_o they_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o the_o fulfil_n and_o gratify_v these_o lust_n and_o distemper_n but_o if_o these_o lust_n be_v but_o heal_v and_o separate_v as_o they_o may_v be_v for_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o essence_n of_o their_o soul_n they_o be_v no_o part_n of_o their_o nature_n or_o be_v no_o they_o be_v but_o stranger_n and_o alien_n unto_o their_o soul_n if_o these_o i_o say_v be_v but_o separate_v from_o they_o if_o they_o be_v but_o mortify_v and_o go_v these_o kind_n of_o way_n whereby_o they_o be_v to_o be_v gratify_v will_v be_v altogether_o unsatisfy_v unto_o they_o and_o will_v have_v no_o tafte_n or_o relish_n at_o all_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o will_v not_o only_o find_v no_o relish_n nor_o any_o savour_n in_o they_o but_o they_o will_v be_v troublesome_a they_o will_v be_v matter_n of_o shame_n and_o confusion_n unto_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v conceive_v man_n heal_v of_o all_o that_o unclean_a retinue_n of_o lust_n and_o sinful_a distemper_n to_o have_v these_o remove_v and_o throw_v out_o of_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o to_o be_v say_v to_o make_v these_o thing_n very_o desirable_a in_o your_o eye_n but_o we_o may_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v of_o this_o point_n in_o the_o progress_n of_o this_o discourse_n thus_o than_o you_o see_v that_o where_o man_n be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v like_a to_o have_v but_o small_a trade_n they_o be_v there_o but_o as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o they_o have_v no_o joy_n in_o such_o soul_n nor_o these_o soul_n much_o sorrow_n and_o trouble_n with_o they_o and_o the_o serious_a consideration_n of_o this_o we_o teach_v to_o spirit_n second_o sect._n 10_o another_o thing_n that_o will_v attend_v and_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o consequence_n of_o a_o man_n be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n be_v this_o viz._n that_o a_o man_n hereby_o will_v become_v little_a sensible_a of_o impression_n of_o sorrow_n grief_n and_o trouble_v from_o the_o world_n and_o the_o cross_a working_n and_o deal_n of_o thing_n unto_o he_o thou_o shall_v be_v as_o he_o that_o lie_v down_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o sea_n or_o as_o he_o that_o lie_v upon_o the_o top_n of_o a_o mast_n they_o have_v strike_v i_o shall_v thou_o say_v and_o i_o be_v not_o sick_a they_o have_v beat_v i_o and_o i_o feel_v it_o not_o mean_v that_o in_o fit_n of_o drunkenness_n man_n be_v not_o sensible_a either_o of_o any_o danger_n though_o never_o there_o a_o more_o peculiar_a and_o a_o more_o rich_a presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n vouchsafe_v unto_o those_o who_o enjoy_v the_o gospel_n and_o which_o move_v they_o more_o strong_o to_o spiritual_a action_n and_o which_o have_v a_o more_o immediate_a and_o strong_a connexion_n with_o their_o present_a joy_n and_o comfort_n and_o also_o with_o their_o eternal_a life_n and_o good_a by_o that_o little_a which_o we_o have_v insist_v upon_o what_o we_o mean_v by_o sow_v to_o the_o spirit_n but_o if_o you_o ask_v how_o shall_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o be_v any_o way_n or_o mean_n to_o help_v we_o forward_o in_o this_o viz._n a_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n or_o any_o way_n promote_v such_o a_o end_n i_o answer_v this_o be_v clear_a from_o the_o principle_n insist_v upon_o in_o the_o former_a

discernible_a to_o those_o that_o have_v eye_n to_o discern_v man_n that_o be_v but_o of_o competent_a judgement_n may_v clear_o see_v that_o in_o some_o man_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v put_v forth_o himself_o in_o this_o great_a and_o happy_a gift_n of_o wisdom_n make_v they_o able_a to_o find_v out_o ground_n and_o passage_n of_o scripture_n for_o the_o clear_n and_o unfolding_n of_o that_o he_o that_o be_v somewhat_o warm_a and_o somewhat_o apt_a to_o be_v stir_v in_o his_o spirit_n about_o his_o worldly_a affair_n and_o withal_o be_v zealous_o affect_v with_o and_o about_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n may_v be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n but_o however_o the_o judgement_n of_o this_o latter_a heat_n be_v take_v away_o by_o the_o former_a though_o such_o a_o man_n zeal_n in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n may_v proceed_v from_o a_o fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o he_o yet_o his_o heat_n otherwise_o drown_v the_o argument_n of_o it_o this_o heat_n we_o speak_v of_o in_o his_o worldly_a affair_n though_o it_o do_v not_o contradict_v the_o reality_n or_o truth_n of_o his_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n yet_o it_o contradict_v and_o destroy_v the_o evidence_n proof_n or_o manifestation_n of_o it_o the_o reason_n why_o i_o conceive_v that_o some_o fervour_n of_o spirit_n in_o a_o man_n own_o occasion_n may_v possible_o consist_v with_o a_o fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o which_o case_n a_o man_n zeal_n for_o god_n must_v needs_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o fullness_n be_v because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n even_o when_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n be_v to_o a_o good_a degree_n fill_v with_o he_o do_v not_o always_o dissolve_v the_o natural_a frame_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o such_o disposition_n which_o be_v not_o apostle_n phil._n 2.21_o all_o man_n seek_v their_o own_o not_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o this_o case_n when_o he_o that_o seek_v or_o hitherto_o have_v seek_v his_o own_o thing_n with_o zeal_n and_o diligence_n but_o have_v be_v remiss_a and_o cold_a in_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n shall_v be_v reduce_v to_o great_a zeal_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n argument_n of_o no_o weight_n no_o way_n convince_a that_o they_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n a_o second_o rule_n for_o discovery_n of_o those_o who_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n from_o those_o who_o be_v not_o fill_v with_o he_o but_o with_o a_o contrary_a spirit_n sect._n 7_o may_v be_v this_o when_o man_n and_o woman_n have_v the_o command_n of_o their_o spirit_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o great_a presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n with_o they_o and_o that_o that_o zeal_n and_o heat_n wherein_o some_o man_n upon_o all_o occasion_n and_o without_o any_o difference_n make_v between_o any_o circumstance_n appear_v be_v but_o either_o a_o kind_n of_o natural_a temper_n or_o which_o be_v worse_o some_o affect_a strain_n of_o hypocrisy_n it_o be_v a_o promise_v make_v by_o god_n unto_o those_o that_o will_v cause_v their_o ear_n to_o hearken_v unto_o wisdom_n and_o incline_v their_o heart_n to_o understanding_n etc._n etc._n prov._n 2.2_o compare_v understand_v judgement_n that_o be_v know_v how_o to_o rise_v and_o fall_v in_o their_o spirit_n how_o to_o change_v and_o temper_v their_o behaviour_n and_o speech_n when_o to_o be_v authoritative_a stout_a and_o resolute_a and_o again_o familiar_a gentle_a and_o submissive_a according_a as_o the_o person_n be_v with_o who_o and_o according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o occasion_n and_o affair_n wherein_o they_o have_v to_o do_v and_o this_o in_o order_n to_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n and_o the_o justify_n of_o his_o wisdom_n it_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o much_o weight_n to_o prove_v that_o they_o have_v a_o rich_a anoint_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n we_o find_v paul_n a_o man_n very_o excellent_a and_o active_a in_o all_o the_o variety_n of_o these_o spiritual_a
