what_o punishment_n be_v so_o terrible_a as_o that_o of_o fire_n and_o how_o unspeakable_o do_v it_o enhance_v the_o misery_n in_o that_o it_o be_v eternal_a and_o that_o too_o as_o inflict_v by_o a_o offend_a god_n who_o be_v execute_v his_o vengeance_n upon_o sinner_n will_v god_n sinner_n will_v serious_o consider_v whether_o they_o be_v able_a to_o endure_v the_o eternal_a pain_n of_o a_o gnaw_a conscience_n or_o can_v patient_o dwell_v with_o devour_a flame_n whether_o the_o momentary_a pleasure_n of_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v balance_v with_o those_o furious_a reflection_n those_o horrid_a sting_n and_o intolerable_a torture_n the_o damn_a suffer_v day_n and_o night_n where_o nothing_o of_o life_n remain_v but_o the_o sense_n of_o pain_n alas_o will_v no_o argument_n prevail_v with_o man_n how_o amaze_a be_v it_o to_o think_v that_o the_o everlasting_a god_n have_v use_v all_o the_o method_n of_o love_n to_o excite_v man_n to_o holiness_n and_o to_o reclaim_v they_o from_o sin_n and_o all_o to_o no_o purpose_n may_v i_o not_o well_o say_v to_o such_o man_n as_o st._n paul_n say_v to_o the_o galatian_n unwise_a sinner_n who_o have_v bewitch_v you_o they_o endure_v we_o may_v also_o add_v that_o celestial_a felicity_n they_o be_v for_o ever_o exclude_v from_o how_o torment_v will_v it_o be_v to_o think_v of_o a_o everlasting_a separation_n from_o the_o divine_a presence_n and_o instead_o of_o a_o holy_a society_n to_o keep_v a_o continual_a correspondency_n with_o impure_a spirit_n will_v god_n that_o this_o brief_a discovery_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v may_v prevail_v with_o man_n to_o be_v holy_a in_o all_o manner_n of_o conversation_n but_o methinks_v i_o hear_v the_o overzealous_a professor_n too_o ignorant_o object_v that_o it_o be_v servile_a mercenary_a and_o legal_a to_o be_v holy_a for_o love_n of_o heaven_n or_o fear_v of_o hell_n true_o if_o it_o be_v so_o as_o these_o man_n teach_v i_o know_v not_o what_o can_v be_v the_o intent_n and_o design_n of_o all_o the_o promise_n and_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o although_o i_o question_v not_o but_o it_o be_v a_o generous_a and_o christian_a principle_n to_o serve_v god_n out_o of_o pure_a love_n yet_o i_o can_v never_o be_v induce_v to_o think_v that_o to_o be_v holy_a for_o love_n of_o heaven_n and_o fear_n of_o hell_n can_v be_v separate_a from_o that_o principle_n of_o love_n to_o god_n god_n know_v how_o much_o in_o need_n man_n stand_v both_o of_o argument_n to_o work_v upon_o their_o hope_n and_o fear_n to_o excite_v they_o to_o duty_n and_o since_o he_o who_o know_v our_o nature_n have_v use_v promise_n to_o allure_v we_o and_o threaten_n to_o awaken_v we_o we_o must_v not_o pretend_v to_o be_v wise_a than_o god_n and_o reject_v those_o motive_n he_o have_v think_v fit_a to_o prescribe_v and_o indeed_o if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o the_o fear_n of_o evil_a and_o the_o hope_n of_o good_a it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v the_o press_v of_o other_o motive_n shall_v be_v but_o a_o mere_a beat_n of_o the_o air._n but_o that_o this_o be_v not_o servile_a and_o mercenary_a needs_o no_o other_o argument_n to_o prove_v it_o but_o our_o saviour_n endure_v the_o cross_n and_o despise_v the_o shame_n for_o the_o joy_n that_o be_v set_v before_o he_o a_o scripture_n sufficient_a enough_o to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o all_o opponent_n sect_n 4._o holiness_n the_o main_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o end_n of_o all_o christ_n suffering_n subject_n who_o know_v the_o intent_n and_o design_n of_o those_o law_n issue_v forth_o by_o their_o prince_n will_v be_v loath_a to_o contemn_v his_o authority_n especial_o when_o the_o whole_a intent_n of_o these_o be_v to_o make_v they_o by_o their_o obedience_n the_o more_o happy_a and_o sure_o it_o be_v the_o most_o unaccountable_a thing_n that_o can_v be_v if_o they_o notwithstanding_o despise_v his_o law_n and_o quite_o counter-act_n his_o design_n now_o the_o main_a design_n of_o the_o christian_a help_v himself_o our_o bless_a lord_n redeem_v we_o from_o our_o captivity_n by_o offer_v up_o himself_o a_o ransom_n to_o satisfy_v divine_a justice_n and_o all_o this_o that_o we_o may_v walk_v in_o newness_n of_o life_n and_o now_o what_o ingratitude_n be_v it_o to_o despise_v so_o much_o love_v sure_o if_o he_o that_o despise_a moses_n law_n die_v without_o mercy_n of_o how_o much_o sore_a punishment_n shall_v he_o be_v think_v worthy_a who_o have_v tread_v under_o foot_n the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o have_v count_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n wherewith_o he_o be_v sanctify_v a_o unholy_a thing_n heb._n 10.28_o 29._o he_o must_v certain_o be_v of_o a_o very_a base_a and_o disingenuous_a spirit_n who_o take_v pleasure_n in_o sin_n when_o he_o consider_v how_o dear_o christ_n pay_v for_o it_o have_v he_o be_v at_o so_o much_o pain_n undergo_v such_o dismal_a suffering_n to_o purchase_v our_o peace_n and_o will_v we_o notwithstanding_o frustrate_v his_o design_n how_o strange_a to_o astonishment_n be_v this_o that_o man_n shall_v prefer_v captivity_n to_o freedom_n alas_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o our_o bless_a master_n be_v so_o barbarous_o and_o despiteful_o use_v by_o the_o jew_n and_o roman_a soldier_n but_o must_v we_o be_v also_o actor_n in_o the_o tragedy_n and_o by_o our_o sin_n crucify_v he_o again_o do_v he_o not_o die_v that_o we_o may_v live_v and_o shall_v we_o spend_v our_o life_n in_o offer_v despite_n unto_o he_o strange_a that_o so_o much_o madness_n shall_v lodge_v in_o the_o breast_n of_o any_o into_o who_o god_n have_v breathe_v the_o breath_n of_o life_n i_o may_v here_o also_o add_v that_o it_o be_v a_o contemn_v and_o offer_v of_o the_o great_a despite_n to_o the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o despise_v holiness_n for_o upon_o this_o account_n be_v the_o three_o person_n of_o the_o bless_a trinity_n call_v the_o holy_a ghost_n because_o his_o peculiar_a office_n be_v to_o enable_v we_o to_o perform_v holy_a action_n now_o if_o we_o continue_v in_o our_o rebellion_n if_o we_o reject_v the_o offer_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o internal_a motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o holiness_n we_o do_v hereby_o become_v guilty_a of_o quench_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o offer_v despite_n unto_o he_o which_o be_v so_o horrid_a a_o piece_n of_o villainy_n that_o heaven_n threaten_v it_o with_o the_o severe_a torment_n sect_n 5._o holiness_n the_o most_o proper_a and_o effectual_a mean_n for_o attain_v length_n of_o day_n of_o all_o outward_a and_o temporal_a blessing_n length_n of_o day_n have_v just_o the_o precedency_n since_o without_o this_o all_o other_o can_v afford_v little_a or_o no_o comfort_n the_o possession_n and_o enjoyment_n of_o other_o mercy_n can_v bestow_v no_o satisfaction_n to_o man_n lie_v on_o their_o bed_n prov._n 23.29_o 30._o who_o have_v woe_n who_o have_v sorrow_n who_o have_v wound_n without_o cause_n they_o that_o tarry_v long_o at_o the_o wine_n etc._n etc._n holiness_n be_v repugnant_a and_o inconsistent_a with_o excess_n which_o natural_o put_v a_o period_n to_o the_o life_n of_o man_n it_o forbid_v all_o manner_n of_o vice_n which_o lead_v down_o to_o the_o chamber_n of_o death_n and_o keep_v man_n within_o due_a bound_n in_o their_o eat_n and_o drink_v before_o mankind_n have_v corrupt_v themselves_o by_o their_o notorious_a and_o impudent_a viciousness_n we_o read_v of_o their_o great_a length_n of_o day_n but_o the_o increase_n of_o sin_n multiply_v disease_n which_o hurry_v man_n to_o untimely_a death_n i_o deny_v not_o but_o the_o great_a lord_n and_o master_n of_o the_o universe_n may_v for_o holy_a and_o wise_a end_n know_v unto_o himself_o cut_v short_a the_o life_n of_o the_o righteous_a yet_o sure_o if_o we_o consult_v either_o experience_n or_o reason_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o certain_a beyond_o doubt_n that_o virtuous_a man_n enjoy_v for_o ordinary_a far_o the_o long_a life_n some_o good_a man_n may_v be_v natural_o of_o a_o brittle_a constitution_n yet_o how_o strange_o have_v their_o life_n be_v protract_v by_o their_o moderation_n and_o sobriety_n and_o how_o many_o strong_a man_n have_v have_v their_o day_n shorten_v by_o their_o intemperance_n and_o excess_n indeed_o he_o that_o consider_v this_o well_o shall_v find_v that_o holiness_n be_v the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n to_o promote_v long_a life_n both_o upon_o a_o moral_a and_o natural_a account_n upon_o a_o moral_a account_n long_a life_n be_v the_o reward_n which_o the_o divine_a promise_n do_v secure_a to_o such_o man_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a wickedness_n be_v threaten_v with_o shortness_n of_o day_n upon_o a_o natural_a account_n the_o fire_n do_v not_o more_o natural_o produce_v heat_n than_o holiness_n do_v procure_v health_n and_o length_n of_o day_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o evident_a than_o that_o the_o most_o
let_v we_o not_o even_o under_o these_o sad_a circumstance_n charge_n god_n foolish_o or_o be_v impatient_a under_o the_o severity_n of_o his_o correction_n for_o this_o be_v no_o argument_n of_o the_o hatred_n of_o a_o father_n let_v we_o rather_o in_o this_o case_n view_v the_o unspeakable_a reward_n and_o the_o divine_a promise_n which_o be_v sufficient_a argument_n to_o revive_v our_o faint_a and_o most_o languish_a hope_n and_o able_a to_o form_v our_o soul_n to_o true_a patience_n philosopher_n if_o ever_o they_o attain_v to_o a_o perfection_n in_o any_o virtue_n it_o be_v in_o their_o patience_n under_o the_o instability_n of_o worldly_a thing_n and_o yet_o their_o ground_n and_o motive_n to_o patience_n be_v sandy_a and_o ineffectual_a and_o no_o way_n comparable_a to_o the_o argument_n habit_n and_o custom_n while_o this_o be_v the_o very_a thing_n that_o enhance_v their_o guilt_n neither_o will_v it_o i_o think_v a_o whit_n lessen_v the_o crime_n that_o great_a person_n have_v give_v it_o such_o a_o vogue_n in_o the_o world_n the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v a_o sacred_a thing_n which_o must_v not_o be_v appeal_v to_o but_o in_o the_o most_o weighty_a and_o serious_a case_n thou_o shall_v swear_v say_v the_o prophet_n that_o the_o lord_n live_v in_o truth_n justice_n and_o judgement_n if_o we_o either_o affirm_v or_o promise_v any_o thing_n by_o oath_n it_o must_v be_v after_o mature_a deliberation_n after_o we_o have_v ascertain_v ourselves_o of_o the_o truth_n and_o lawfulness_n of_o it_o this_o the_o very_a poet_n can_v dictate_v nec_fw-la deus_fw-la intersit_fw-la nisi_fw-la dignus_fw-la vindice_fw-la nodus_fw-la inciderit_fw-la it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o the_o hector_n of_o this_o age_n will_v learn_v of_o the_o very_a heathen_n more_o reverence_n and_o that_o those_o man_n that_o pretend_v to_o good_a breed_n will_v be_v so_o civil_a even_o sometime_o for_o the_o company_n sake_n as_o to_o forbear_v those_o oath_n that_o tender_a ear_n can_v hear_v without_o offence_n in_o the_o last_o place_n the_o divine_a love_n if_o scatter_v in_o our_o heart_n will_v excite_v we_o to_o worship_n god_n after_o the_o method_n himself_o have_v prescribe_v it_o will_v direct_v we_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o piety_n where_o we_o shall_v find_v every_o thing_n that_o relate_v to_o our_o immediate_a intercourse_n with_o god_n in_o divine_a ordinance_n and_o worship_n exact_o order_v i_o confess_v the_o heathen-world_n as_o they_o be_v confuse_v in_o their_o notion_n of_o a_o deity_n and_o almost_o quite_o ignorant_a of_o the_o eternal_a reward_n so_o be_v they_o superstitious_a in_o their_o worship_n and_o sometime_o ignorant_o erect_v altar_n to_o a_o unknown_a god_n their_o worship_n be_v attend_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o external_a pomp_n be_v very_o grateful_a to_o their_o external_a sense_n but_o it_o reach_v not_o the_o heart_n but_o the_o christian_a rule_n instruct_v we_o to_o worship_n god_n in_o spirit_n and_o prescribe_v the_o best_a method_n of_o devotion_n it_o require_v that_o we_o worship_n and_o bow_v before_o the_o lord_n our_o maker_n with_o all_o possible_a humility_n and_o reverence_n that_o we_o possess_v our_o heart_n with_o the_o greatness_n and_o glory_n of_o that_o majesty_n we_o adore_v that_o we_o be_v intent_n in_o our_o devotion_n and_o not_o suffer_v secular_a concern_v to_o intrude_v and_o interrupt_v we_o that_o we_o act_n faith_n upon_o he_o and_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v a_o rewarder_n of_o those_o that_o diligent_o seek_v he_o and_o that_o we_o approach_v the_o throne_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ._n if_o devotion_n be_v not_o a_o duty_n yet_o methinks_v the_o advantage_n thereof_o shall_v invite_v and_o that_o which_o final_o exclude_v from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n where_o nothing_o that_o pollute_v can_v enter_v 2_o cor._n 6.9_o rev._n 21.27_o it_o be_v indeed_o not_o wonder_v though_o the_o religion_n of_o the_o gentile_n which_o contain_v a_o prodigious_a mixture_n of_o vanity_n and_o impiety_n gratify_v the_o inclination_n of_o uncleanness_n for_o if_o we_o consult_v their_o write_n we_o shall_v observe_v that_o the_o most_o abominable_a vice_n want_v not_o a_o deity_n to_o patronize_v it_o among_o they_o which_o upon_o the_o matter_n be_v a_o establish_v iniquity_n by_o law_n and_o a_o argument_n more_o sufficient_a to_o encourage_v than_o to_o correct_v vice_n and_o although_o the_o write_n of_o some_o philosopher_n have_v be_v more_o refine_v yet_o the_o life_n even_o of_o such_o be_v full_a of_o the_o foul_a action_n nay_o the_o rule_n which_o the_o best_a master_n of_o morality_n among_o they_o prescribe_v never_o reach_v to_o the_o purify_n of_o the_o heart_n i_o confess_v that_o man_n that_o shall_v take_v notice_n and_o who_o have_v eye_n in_o his_o head_n can_v evite_v this_o when_o man_n proclaim_v their_o sin_n like_o sodom_n of_o the_o prodigious_a uncleanness_n this_o profane_a age_n have_v arrive_v at_o shall_v be_v strong_o tempt_v to_o suspect_v the_o purity_n of_o the_o christian_a rule_n if_o he_o make_v no_o far_a enquiry_n than_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o most_o that_o be_v call_v christian_n we_o may_v indeed_o very_o apt_o write_v to_o the_o professor_n of_o this_o age_n as_o the_o great_a apostle_n do_v to_o the_o church_n of_o corinth_n it_o be_v report_v common_o that_o there_o be_v fornication_n among_o you_o and_o such_o fornication_n as_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o name_v among_o the_o gentile_n 1_o cor._n 5.1_o and_o i_o be_o a_o little_a afraid_a if_o the_o church_n shall_v strict_o observe_v that_o charge_n that_o the_o apostle_n give_v there_o and_o excommunicate_v all_o such_o wicked_a person_n that_o our_o church_n shall_v not_o need_v to_o brag_v much_o of_o the_o number_n of_o christian_n it_o be_v indeed_o matter_n of_o great_a sadness_n to_o consider_v how_o much_o the_o christian_a religion_n have_v suffer_v upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o scandalous_a practice_n of_o titular_a christian_n and_o i_o make_v no_o doubt_n but_o this_o age_n have_v be_v at_o more_o pain_n than_o any_o that_o precede_v it_o to_o increase_v the_o scandal_n but_o sure_o it_o be_v but_o a_o silly_a artifice_n to_o challenge_v the_o exactness_n of_o the_o rule_n and_o with_o celsus_n impudent_o allege_v that_o the_o christian_a religion_n encourage_v man_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o immorality_n and_o vice_n since_o of_o all_o religion_n the_o christian_a only_o can_v produce_v the_o strict_a law_n against_o all_o filthiness_n of_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n as_o bless_a apostle_n tell_v we_o according_a to_o godliness_n and_o lay_v undispensible_a obligation_n upon_o its_o follower_n both_o to_o think_v upon_o and_o to_o do_v dear_v a_o quality_n and_o so_o noble_a a_o embelishment_n of_o our_o nature_n that_o where_o this_o be_v want_v all_o other_o advantage_n be_v little_o regard_v and_o not_o only_a man_n but_o the_o great_a god_n also_o resist_v the_o proud_a it_o be_v a_o vice_n which_o beside_o christianity_n morality_n also-condemns_a as_o universal_o unbecoming_a to_o humane_a nature_n and_o that_o which_o not_o only_o disturb_v one_o self_n but_o also_o disquiet_v whole_a society_n but_o god_n give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a he_o take_v such_o person_n into_o favour_n as_o be_v more_o pliable_a to_o receive_v the_o impress_n of_o his_o love_n and_o as_o a_o humble_a so_o also_o a_o meek_a and_o quiet_a spirit_n be_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n of_o great_a price_n and_o can_v there_o be_v a_o more_o convince_a motive_n than_o this_o to_o recommend_v meekness_n to_o christian_n and_o indeed_o we_o can_v pretend_v to_o be_v the_o disciple_n of_o holy_a jesus_n if_o we_o refuse_v to_o learn_v that_o lesson_n he_o have_v copy_v out_o to_o we_o matth._n 11.29_o learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n although_o a_o calm_a and_o quiet_a spirit_n be_v a_o reward_n to_o itself_o as_o every_o virtue_n be_v yet_o it_o want_v not_o a_o claim_n to_o a_o temporal_a felicity_n also_o matth._n 5.5_o bless_a a_o unpleasant_a humour_n that_o it_o make_v those_o man_n it_o possess_v unfit_a for_o humane_a society_n it_o be_v not_o unfit_o define_v by_o the_o poet_n to_o be_v a_o short_a madness_n which_o indeed_o agree_v very_o well_o with_o the_o wise_a man_n verdict_n of_o it_o eccl._n anger_n rest_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o fool_n if_o then_o man_n will_v but_o compare_v the_o calm_a
as_o ever_o any_o former_a age_n acquire_v and_o it_o may_v to_o the_o reproach_n of_o it_o be_v say_v as_o ever_o any_o be_v like_a to_o reach_v to_o yet_o till_o man_n cast_v quite_o off_o humanity_n it_o can_v be_v expect_v that_o vice_n shall_v have_v advocate_n to_o plead_v in_o its_o defence_n it_o be_v a_o noble_a say_n of_o the_o great_a moralist_n seneca_n licet_fw-la deus_fw-la ornament_n of_o a_o meek_a and_o quiet_a spirit_n be_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n of_o great_a price_n although_o the_o holy_a and_o devout_a soul_n may_v be_v reduce_v to_o our_o saviour_n strait_n not_o to_o have_v where_o to_o lay_v his_o head_n yet_o how_o can_v he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v poor_a since_o he_o possess_v he_o who_o be_v all_o the_o most_o adverse_a chance_n that_o befall_v such_o a_o soul_n can_v denominate_v it_o poor_a there_o be_v a_o crown_n and_o princely_a inheritance_n which_o belong_v to_o it_o nay_o beside_o that_o glorious_a reversion_n we_o have_v express_v promise_n that_o such_o soul_n shall_v not_o be_v altogether_o destitute_a of_o necessary_n to_o sustain_v and_o support_v they_o in_o this_o their_o pilgrimage_n i_o have_v already_o show_v that_o honour_n and_o pleasure_n be_v the_o attendant_n of_o holiness_n what_o in_o the_o world_n be_v more_o glorious_a than_o for_o a_o man_n to_o conquer_v those_o lust_n and_o inordinate_a appetite_n that_o seek_v the_o mastery_n over_o he_o what_o pleasure_n be_v able_a to_o contest_v with_o those_o ravish_a joy_n which_o result_n from_o a_o holy_a conversation_n there_o be_v nothing_o imaginable_a that_o so_o exhilarate_v and_o revive_v man_n as_o a_o calm_a and_o quiet_a conscience_n but_o i_o pass_v this_o in_o the_o next_o place_n i_o come_v to_o show_v that_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o all_o other_o blessing_n can_v never_o profit_v that_o man_n that_o want_v holiness_n this_o be_v plain_o attest_v by_o our_o saviour_n say_v what_o have_v a_o man_n profit_v if_o he_o shall_v gain_v the_o whole_a world_n and_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n to_o have_v a_o affluence_n of_o temporal_a mercy_n can_v so_o much_o as_o contribute_v to_o a_o present_a felicity_n where_o the_o forementioned_a qualification_n be_v lack_v outward_a favour_n not_o attend_v and_o chain_v with_o real_a holiness_n contribute_v only_o to_o enhance_v the_o misery_n of_o their_o possessor_n they_o be_v proper_a fuel_n
