therefore_o when_o we_o be_v put_v to_o pain_n in_o our_o calling_n to_o trouble_n for_o a_o good_a conscience_n or_o to_o any_o hardshippe_n in_o the_o world_n we_o must_v labour_v for_o contentment_n because_o we_o be_v hardly_o make_v conformable_a unto_o christ._n there_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n or_o any_o condition_n that_o befall_v a_o christian_a in_o this_o life_n but_o there_o be_v a_o general_a rule_n in_o the_o scripture_n for_o it_o and_o this_o rule_n be_v quicken_v by_o example_n because_o it_o be_v a_o practical_a knowledge_n god_n do_v not_o only_o write_v his_o law_n in_o naked_a commandment_n but_o he_o enlivens_fw-la these_o with_o the_o practice_n of_o some_o one_o or_o other_o of_o his_o servant_n who_o can_v read_v david_n psalm_n but_o he_o shall_v read_v himself_o in_o they_o he_o can_v be_v in_o any_o trouble_n but_o david_n be_v in_o the_o same_o etc._n etc._n as_o child_n in_o the_o womb_n have_v eye_n and_o ear_n not_o for_o that_o place_n but_o for_o a_o civil_a life_n afterward_o among_o man_n where_o they_o shall_v have_v use_n of_o all_o member_n even_o so_o our_o life_n here_o be_v not_o for_o this_o world_n only_o but_o for_o another_o we_o have_v large_a capacity_n large_a memory_n large_a affection_n large_a expectation_n god_n do_v not_o give_v we_o large_a capacity_n and_o large_a affection_n for_o this_o world_n but_o for_o heaven_n and_o heavenly_a thing_n take_v a_o christian_n that_o have_v study_v mortification_n you_o shall_v see_v the_o life_n of_o jesus_n in_o his_o sickness_n in_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o patience_n and_o heavenly_a mindedness_n when_o his_o condition_n be_v above_o his_o power_n his_o strength_n above_o his_o condition_n as_o man_n do_v cherish_v young_a plant_n at_o first_o and_o do_v fence_v they_o about_o with_o hedge_n and_o other_o thing_n to_o keep_v they_o from_o hurt_n but_o when_o they_o be_v grow_v they_o remove_v they_o and_o then_o leave_v they_o to_o the_o wind_n and_o weather_n so_o god_n be_v set_v his_o child_n first_o with_o prop_n of_o inward_a comfort_n but_o afterward_o he_o expose_v they_o to_o storm_n and_o wind_n because_o they_o be_v better_a able_a to_o bear_v it_o therefore_o let_v no_o man_n think_v himself_o the_o better_a because_o he_o be_v free_a from_o trouble_n it_o be_v because_o god_n see_v he_o not_o fit_a to_o bear_v great_a when_o we_o read_v the_o scripture_n we_o shall_v read_v to_o take_v out_o some_o thing_n for_o ourselves_o as_o when_o we_o read_v any_o promise_n this_o be_v i_o when_o we_o read_v any_o prerogative_n this_o be_v i_o it_o be_v write_v for_o i_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v what_o soever_o be_v write_v aforetime_o be_v write_v for_o our_o learning_n etc._n etc._n as_o the_o spirit_n be_v occasion_n to_o raise_v up_o our_o former_a grace_n for_o faith_n stir_v up_o all_o other_o grace_n and_o hold_v every_o grace_n to_o the_o word_n and_o so_o long_o as_o faith_n continue_v we_o keep_v all_o other_o grace_n in_o exercise_n there_o be_v no_o true_a christian_n but_o have_v a_o public_a spirit_n to_o seek_v the_o good_a of_o other_o because_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o be_v a_o christian_n he_o labour_v for_o self_n denial_n he_o know_v he_o must_v give_v up_o himself_o and_o all_o to_o god_n so_o that_o his_o spirit_n be_v enlarge_v in_o measure_n unto_o god_n and_o to_o the_o church_n and_o therefore_o the_o great_a portion_n a_o man_n have_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n the_o more_o he_o seek_v the_o good_a of_o other_o if_o we_o will_v have_v heart_n to_o praise_n god_n we_o must_v labour_v to_o see_v every_o thing_n we_o receive_v from_o god_n to_o be_v of_o grace_n and_o abundance_n of_o grace_n answerable_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o good_a whatsoever_o we_o have_v spirit_n against_o himself_o he_o accuse_v himself_o he_o take_v god_n part_n against_o himself_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v lay_v open_a that_o he_o may_v find_v the_o great_a mercy_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n but_o the_o spirit_n must_v open_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o see_v else_o we_o shall_v have_v a_o natural_a knowledge_n of_o supernatural_a thing_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o have_v a_o supernatural_a sight_n to_o see_v supernatural_a thing_n so_o as_o to_o change_v the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o spirit_n only_o work_v faith_n to_o see_v christ_n be_v i_o further_o only_o the_o spirit_n can_v work_v the_o conscience_n to_o be_v quiet_a because_o he_o be_v great_a than_o the_o conscience_n and_o can_v answer_v all_o inward_a objection_n and_o cavil_v of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n
unless_o therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n apply_v what_o christ_n have_v do_v the_o conscience_n will_v not_o be_v satisfy_v the_o best_a man_n in_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n will_v be_v in_o darkness_n and_o call_v their_o state_n into_o question_n if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v not_o convince_v they_o and_o answer_v all_o cavil_v for_o they_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o only_o be_v convince_v at_o the_o first_o by_o the_o spirit_n but_o in_o our_o continue_a course_n of_o christianity_n this_o therefore_o shall_v make_v we_o to_o come_v to_o god_n ordinance_n with_o a_o holy_a devotion_n oh_o lord_n vouch_v safe_a the_o spirit_n of_o revelation_n and_o take_v the_o scale_n from_o my_o eye_n that_o as_o these_o be_v truth_n so_o they_o may_v be_v truth_n to_o i_o do_v with_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v convince_v weak_o it_o be_v sure_a of_o the_o main_a yet_o it_o be_v toss_v with_o many_o doubt_n and_o fear_n but_o the_o anchor_n be_v in_o heaven_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v so_o far_o convince_v every_o christian_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n as_o preserve_v in_o he_o such_o a_o power_n of_o grace_n as_o to_o cast_v himself_o upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n god_n will_v send_v his_o spirit_n so_o far_o into_o the_o heart_n as_o it_o shall_v not_o betray_v itself_o to_o despair_n he_o will_v let_v such_o a_o beam_n into_o the_o soul_n as_o all_o the_o power_n of_o hell_n shall_v not_o quench_v when_o we_o neglect_v prayer_n and_o set_v upon_o duty_n in_o our_o own_o strength_n and_o in_o confidence_n of_o our_o own_o part_n if_o we_o belong_v to_o god_n we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o miscarry_v though_o another_o man_n perhaps_o may_v prosper_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v continual_o dependent_a upon_o god_n for_o his_o direction_n and_o for_o his_o blessing_n in_o whatsoever_o we_o go_v about_o as_o many_o woman_n because_o they_o will_v not_o endure_v the_o pain_n of_o childbirth_n do_v kill_v their_o child_n in_o the_o womb_n so_o many_o man_n who_o will_v not_o be_v trouble_v with_o holy_a action_n do_v stifle_v holy_a motion_n therefore_o let_v we_o take_v he_o the_o of_o murder_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n but_o let_v we_o entertain_v they_o that_o when_o they_o be_v kindle_v they_o may_v turn_v to_o resolution_n and_o resolution_n into_o practice_n this_o be_v a_o common_a rule_n that_o we_o can_v converse_v with_o company_n that_o be_v not_o spiritual_a but_o if_o they_o vex_v we_o not_o they_o will_v taint_v we_o unless_o we_o be_v put_v upon_o they_o in_o our_o calling_n way_n we_o come_v to_o assurance_n whatsoever_o good_a be_v in_o a_o natural_a man_n be_v deprave_v by_o a_o selfe-end_n self-love_n rule_v all_o his_o action_n he_o keep_v within_o himself_o and_o make_v for_o himself_o he_o be_v a_o god_n to_o himself_o god_n be_v but_o his_o idol_n this_o be_v true_a of_o all_o natural_a man_n in_o the_o world_n they_o make_v themselves_o their_o last_a end_n and_o where_o the_o end_n be_v deprave_v the_o whole_a course_n be_v corrupt_v the_o sense_n of_o assure_a hope_n can_v be_v maintain_v without_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n diligence_n and_o earnest_n iâ—_n grace_n be_v asleep_a you_o may_v have_v grace_n and_o not_o know_v it_o therefore_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o put_v our_o grace_n into_o exercise_n those_o that_o have_v assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n have_v oftentimes_o troublesome_a distraction_n because_o they_o do_v not_o always_o stand_v upon_o their_o guard_n sometime_o they_o be_v lift_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o sometime_o cast_v down_o even_o to_o hell_n yet_o always_o in_o the_o worst_a condition_n there_o be_v something_o leave_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o suggest_v to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v not_o utter_o cast_v off_o he_o to_o who_o this_o pilgrimage_n be_v oversweete_a love_v not_o his_o country_n yet_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n be_v so_o suitable_a to_o our_o nature_n that_o we_o shall_v sit_v by_o they_o but_o that_o god_n follow_v we_o with_o several_a cross_n therefore_o let_v we_o take_v in_o good_a part_n any_o cross_n because_o it_o be_v out_o of_o heavenly_a love_n that_o we_o world_n see_v not_o the_o happy_a condition_n of_o god_n child_n be_v because_o their_o body_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o same_o infirmity_n with_o the_o worst_a of_o man_n nor_o be_v they_o exempt_v love_n of_o a_o wife_n to_o her_o husband_n may_v begin_v from_o the_o supply_n of_o her_o necessity_n but_o afterward_o she_o may_v love_v he_o also_o for_o the_o sweetness_n of_o his_o person_n so_o the_o soul_n do_v first_o love_n christ_n for_o salvation_n but_o when_o she_o be_v bring_v to_o he_o and_o find_v that_o sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o he_o than_o she_o love_v he_o for_o himself_o it_o shall_v be_v our_o continual_a care_n to_o manifest_v the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o god_n in_o our_o several_a place_n and_o calling_n &_o this_o be_v do_v when_o we_o look_v at_o god_n in_o every_o action_n and_o endeavour_v to_o yield_v our_o whole_a soul_n to_o the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n serve_v he_o in_o our_o spirit_n and_o perform_v the_o work_n of_o our_o calling_n by_o his_o spirit_n according_a to_o his_o word_n and_o unto_o his_o glory_n and_o if_o we_o thus_o labour_v to_o approve_v ourselves_o to_o he_o whatsoever_o be_v the_o issue_n we_o shall_v be_v endue_v with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n with_o inward_a peace_n and_o comfort_n have_v carry_v ourselves_o as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v fit_a to_o persuade_v other_o he_o must_v have_v love_n to_o their_o person_n a_o clear_a knowledge_n of_o the_o cause_n and_o grace_n that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o speak_v in_o wisdom_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o conscience_n as_o we_o be_v save_v by_o love_n so_o we_o be_v persuade_v by_o the_o argument_n of_o love_n which_o be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n that_o be_v lead_v by_o persuasion_n not_o by_o compulsion_n man_n may_v be_v compel_v to_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n but_o not_o to_o faith_n many_o man_n labour_v only_o to_o unfold_v the_o scripture_n for_o the_o increase_n of_o their_o knowledge_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o discourse_v whereas_o the_o special_a intent_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v to_o work_v upon_o the_o heart_n and_o affection_n as_o we_o must_v approve_v ourselves_o to_o god_n and_o to_o our_o own_o conscience_n so_o also_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o other_o not_o to_o their_o humour_n &_o fancy_n that_o they_o may_v witness_v for_o we_o that_o we_o love_v they_o and_o deal_v faithful_o with_o they_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o do_v all_o the_o good_a we_o can_v especial_o to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n that_o be_v redeem_v with_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n if_o we_o deserve_v well_o of_o they_o they_o will_v give_v evidence_n for_o we_o but_o if_o we_o walk_v scandalous_o they_o will_v evidence_n that_o we_o by_o our_o ill_a course_n and_o example_n draw_v they_o to_o ill_a course_n and_o harden_v they_o in_o evil_a it_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n therefore_o to_o approve_v ourselves_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n that_o we_o may_v have_v they_o to_o witness_v for_o we_o that_o such_o man_n of_o who_o we_o have_v deserve_v well_o may_v be_v our_o crown_n at_o the_o last_o day_n a_o man_n do_v then_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n in_o relation_n to_o other_o when_o he_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o can_v deny_v himself_o to_o do_v they_o good_a when_o the_o conscience_n of_o other_o man_n shall_v think_v thus_o such_o a_o man_n regard_v my_o good_a more_o than_o his_o own_o he_o seek_v no_o advantage_n to_o himself_o he_o live_v so_o as_o that_o the_o world_n may_v see_v he_o be_v in_o good_a earnest_n he_o speak_v so_o as_o that_o he_o make_v it_o good_a by_o his_o life_n now_o if_o our_o care_n be_v to_o walk_v thus_o we_o shall_v approve_v ourselves_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n there_o be_v many_o that_o will_v give_v some_o way_n to_o divine_a truth_n but_o they_o have_v a_o reservation_n of_o some_o sin_n when_o herodias_n be_v once_o touch_v than_o john_n baptist_n head_n must_v off_o such_o truth_n as_o come_v near_o make_v they_o fret_v because_o their_o conscience_n tell_v they_o they_o can_v yield_v obedience_n to_o all_o the_o lust_n of_o some_o sin_n have_v get_v such_o domination_n over_o their_o affection_n that_o the_o conscience_n say_v i_o can_v do_v this_o and_o then_o that_o hatred_n that_o shall_v be_v turn_v upon_o the_o sin_n be_v turn_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o the_o minister_n like_v unto_o some_o vermin_n that_o when_o they_o be_v drive_v to_o a_o stand_n they_o will_v fly_v in_o a_o man_n face_n so_o these_o man_n when_o they_o see_v they_o must_v yield_v they_o grow_v malicious_a so_o that_o what_o they_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o they_o will_v reproach_v therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n at_o all_o time_n to_o yield_v obedience_n according_a to_o what_o we_o know_v there_o be_v a_o generation_n of_o churlish_a people_n such_o as_o watch_v for_o offence_n because_o they_o will_v go_v to_o hell_n with_o some_o reason_n they_o will_v not_o see_v who_o be_v weak_a and_o who_o be_v hypocrite_n but_o they_o cast_v reproach_n upon_o
that_o rather_o than_o we_o shall_v be_v condemn_v with_o the_o world_n he_o will_v take_v this_o course_n with_o we_o though_o our_o salvation_n be_v sure_a and_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v with_o the_o world_n yet_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o do_v not_o make_v we_o secure_a for_o though_o god_n do_v not_o damn_v we_o with_o the_o world_n yet_o he_o will_v sharp_o correct_v we_o here_o and_o by_o a_o careful_a sober_a life_n we_o may_v obtain_v many_o blessing_n and_o prevent_v many_o judgement_n and_o make_v our_o pilgrimage_n more_o comfortable_a therefore_o it_o argue_v neither_o grace_n nor_o wit_n that_o because_o god_n will_v save_v i_o therefore_o i_o will_v take_v liberty_n no_o though_o god_n will_v save_v thou_o yet_o he_o will_v take_v such_o a_o and_o leave_v we_o for_o our_o good_a we_o shall_v therefore_o judge_v right_o of_o our_o estate_n and_o not_o think_v we_o be_v forsake_v of_o god_n when_o we_o be_v in_o a_o desertion_n when_o man_n can_v find_v no_o comfort_n yet_o when_o they_o set_v themselves_o to_o teach_v weak_a christian_n by_o way_n of_o reflection_n they_o receive_v comfort_v themselves_o so_o do_v god_n reward_v the_o conscionable_a performance_n of_o this_o duty_n of_o discourse_n that_o those_o thing_n we_o do_v not_o so_o sweet_o understand_v before_o by_o discourse_n we_o understand_v they_o better_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o be_v in_o love_n with_o holy_a conference_n for_o beside_o the_o good_a we_o do_v to_o other_o we_o be_v much_o better_v ourselves_o we_o may_v use_v god_n creature_n but_o not_o scrupulous_o nor_o superstitious_o single_v out_o one_o creature_n from_o another_o nor_o yet_o may_v we_o use_v they_o as_o we_o list_v there_o be_v a_o difference_n between_o right_n and_o the_o use_n of_o right_n the_o magistrate_n may_v restrain_v the_o use_n of_o our_o right_n and_o so_o may_v our_o weak_a brother_n in_o case_n of_o scandal_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n be_v we_o yet_o
