as_o it_o be_v without_o life_n but_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o fire_n he_o be_v hot_a he_o be_v reviue_v he_o be_v cheer_v and_o then_o become_v active_a and_o nimble_a these_o be_v the_o property_n of_o fire_n and_o these_o do_v in_o some_o manner_n part_n resemble_v unto_o we_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n seize_v upon_o a_o man_n and_o then_o enter_v into_o his_o soul_n than_o it_o begin_v to_o waste_v and_o consume_v in_o he_o those_o noisome_a lust_n and_o other_o stubble_n which_o be_v in_o he_o second_o it_o do_v purge_v we_o from_o gross_a sin_n and_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o fume_v we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v a_o clean_a and_o holy_a temple_n for_o he_o to_o dwell_v in_o three_o it_o be_v a_o shine_a light_n ever_o burn_v and_o continual_o give_v light_n unto_o we_o in_o that_o way_n which_o we_o have_v to_o walk_v and_o last_o heat_v and_o inflame_v in_o we_o zeal_n of_o god_n glory_n with_o a_o care_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o with_o a_o love_n of_o all_o mankind_n yea_o withal_o it_o put_v life_n and_o lust_n into_o we_o to_o walk_v in_o that_o good_a way_n in_o which_o it_o do_v lead_v we_o and_o do_v all_o those_o good_a work_n by_o the_o which_o we_o may_v glorify_v god_n and_o be_v commodious_a to_o man_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o lykelihood_n there_o be_v between_o the_o spirit_n and_o fire_n nay_o it_o be_v call_v fire_n for_o john_n say_v that_o christ_n shall_v baptise_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o with_o fire_n that_o be_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v like_o fire_n therefore_o as_o true_o as_o we_o may_v say_v there_o be_v fire_n where_o we_o see_v straw_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n consume_v or_o gold_n and_o silver_n fine_o purge_v or_o great_a light_n in_o dark_a place_n or_o great_a heat_n in_o body_n that_o be_v numb_a before_n even_o so_o certain_o we_o may_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o we_o when_o we_o see_v the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o we_o consume_v our_o soul_n purge_v from_o the_o dross_n of_o sin_n our_o heart_n inlyghtn_v and_o make_v hot_a in_o walk_v and_o work_v according_a to_o the_o light_n the_o second_o question_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v whether_o that_o man_n which_o have_v once_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n may_v loose_v it_o and_o have_v it_o quench_v in_o he_o to_o this_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o &_o work_v in_o diverse_a man_n dives_o in_o diverse_a measure_n therefore_o we_o must_v consider_v of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o frame_v our_o answer_n according_o first_o then_o there_o be_v a_o lyght_a and_o a_o lesser_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o that_o this_o inferior_a or_o lesser_a kind_n of_o work_v may_v be_v take_v away_o appear_v plain_o by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n propound_v for_o that_o beside_o they_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n into_o good_a ground_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n some_o a_o hundred_o some_o thirty_o some_o sixty_o fold_n he_o do_v also_o make_v mention_n of_o some_o other_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o yet_o continue_v not_o and_o what_o have_v not_o these_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o yes_o doubtless_o for_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n yea_o they_o receive_v it_o glad_o and_o that_o which_o be_v more_o they_o believe_v it_o when_o as_o they_o have_v receive_v it_o behold_v then_o three_o fruit_n of_o good_a spirit_n in_o these_o man_n and_o yet_o they_o continue_v not_o for_o they_o believe_v in_o deed_n but_o their_o faith_n be_v temperacie_n it_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o after_o a_o time_n it_o vanish_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n depart_v from_o they_o for_o either_o the_o pleasure_n or_o the_o profit_n of_o this_o life_n do_v draw_v out_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o dry_v they_o up_o or_o else_o the_o fiery_a heat_n of_o persecution_n do_v quite_o consume_v they_o more_o plain_a &_o notable_a for_o this_o purpose_n be_v that_o in_o that_o other_o to_o the_o hebrew_n for_o there_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o some_o may_v taste_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thereby_o be_v make_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v enlighten_v to_o receive_v heavenly_a gift_n yea_o and_o the_o taste_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o what_o then_o sure_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o if_o such_o fall_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v be_v renew_v geve_v we_o to_o understande_v that_o even_o they_o that_o have_v be_v inlyghtn_v and_o that_o have_v receive_v heavenly_a gift_n and_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v even_o such_o may_v fall_v away_o and_o have_v the_o spirit_n quench_v in_o they_o there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n of_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o more_o effectual_a work_n which_o be_v never_o take_v from_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v it_o this_o the_o apostle_n describe_v when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o choose_a of_o god_n be_v beget_v again_o of_o the_o immortal_a seed_n of_o the_o word_n that_o be_v not_o a_o bare_a receive_n or_o light_v taste_v of_o the_o word_n but_o it_o be_v the_o deep_a taste_n of_o the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v beget_v and_o bear_v again_o the_o apostle_n john_n set_v down_o a_o other_o note_n of_o that_o say_v that_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o bear_v again_o can_v not_o sin_n that_o be_v can_v not_o make_v a_o occupation_n of_o sin_n they_o can_v not_o fall_v flat_a away_o by_o sin_n and_o why_o because_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n word_n abide_v in_o they_o even_o that_o seed_n wherewith_o they_o be_v beget_v to_o a_o lyvely_a hope_n of_o life_n even_o that_o seed_n do_v abide_v and_o will_v abide_v even_o to_o the_o end_n who_o so_o be_v beget_v again_o by_o this_o seed_n and_o have_v it_o abide_v in_o he_o that_o the_o spirit_n have_v wrought_v in_o he_o which_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o for_o that_o the_o father_n be_v mighty_a than_o all_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v be_v some_o take_v root_n and_o yet_o not_o blossom_n some_o blossom_n &_o never_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n and_o other_o some_o through_o his_o goodness_n do_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o good_a season_n if_o the_o lord_n deal_v so_o with_o the_o plant_n and_o herb_n of_o the_o field_n why_o may_v he_o not_o deal_v so_o with_o we_o the_o son_n of_o man_n if_o we_o can_v not_o conceive_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o we_o must_v hold_v our_o peace_n for_o all_o the_o work_n of_o god_n be_v do_v in_o righteousness_n and_o all_o our_o knowledge_n be_v unperfect_a and_o therefore_o we_o must_v accuse_v or_o of_o our_o redemption_n &_o justification_n by_o he_o yea_o speak_v of_o that_o high_a and_o weighty_a heaven_n of_o glory_n wherewith_o the_o elect_v be_v crown_v all_o this_o move_v not_o we_o be_v little_o affect_v therewith_o unless_o god_n give_v we_o of_o this_o good_a spirit_n to_o profit_v by_o the_o same_o the_o apostle_n therefore_o with_o good_a reason_n give_v this_o precept_n and_o we_o for_o many_o cause_n be_v to_o lysten_v unto_o it_o least_o by_o any_o mean_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v quench_v in_o we_o and_o so_o we_o deprive_v ourselves_o of_o all_o the_o fruit_n now_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n it_o may_v appear_v he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o have_v already_o receyve_v it_o for_o as_o the_o fire_n can_v not_o be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v where_o it_o be_v not_o so_o they_o can_v not_o be_v say_v to_o quench_v or_o loose_v the_o spirit_n which_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o receive_v the_o spirit_n then_o know_v that_o this_o precept_n do_v proper_o belong_v to_o they_o that_o have_v receyve_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o they_o especial_o be_v to_o make_v a_o special_a use_n of_o it_o for_o the_o other_o it_o can_v not_o profit_v they_o unless_o that_o as_o the_o seed_n lie_v in_o the_o ground_n a_o long_a time_n do_v afterward_o bud_v and_o become_v fruitful_a so_o they_o continue_v in_o their_o mind_n till_o they_o have_v taste_v in_o some_o good_a sort_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o then_o breed_v in_o they_o some_o carefulness_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v it_o well_o then_o to_o they_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o to_o they_o say_v s._n paul_n in_o this_o place_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o if_o we_o do_v somewhat_o serious_o consider_v these_o question_n will_v offer_v themselves_o and_o soon_o arise_v in_o our_o mind_n first_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no._n second_o if_o we_o have_v it_o whether_o it_o may_v be_v lose_v or_o no_o which_o if_o they_o be_v well_o and_o sufficient_o consider_v will_v doubtless_o give_v great_a force_n to_o this_o precept_n for_o the_o first_o if_o we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n or_o no_o we_o must_v sure_o understand_v that_o as_o he_o know_v that_o he_o have_v life_n which_o feel_v it_o in_o himself_o so_o he_o best_a know_v whether_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o feel_v the_o spirit_n work_v in_o he_o if_o we_o will_v further_o know_v by_o the_o peculiar_a work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o first_o of_o all_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o man_n but_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n if_o nothing_o but_o that_o may_v be_v obtain_v by_o the_o nature_n and_o industry_n of_o a_o man_n then_o sure_o in_o that_o man_n be_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o the_o spirit_n be_v from_o god_n it_o be_v from_o above_o it_o be_v above_o nature_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n do_v set_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n against_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n when_o he_o say_v we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n not_o of_o the_o world_n but_o of_o god_n beside_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v eternal_a and_o endure_v for_o ever_o but_o all_o the_o do_n and_o devise_n of_o man_n they_o perish_v and_o in_o time_n have_v a_o end_n therefore_o though_o a_o man_n have_v wisdom_n with_o great_a knowledge_n though_o in_o wit_n and_o skill_n he_o pass_v and_o excel_v the_o common_a sort_n of_o man_n yet_o if_o from_o above_o he_o have_v not_o be_v inlyghtn_v if_o from_o heaven_n his_o wisdom_n be_v not_o sanctify_v his_o knowledge_n shall_v decay_v his_o wisdom_n wyther_o like_o grass_n and_o as_o yet_o he_o have_v not_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o endure_v for_o ever_o and_o therefore_o say_v s._n paul_n we_o teach_v the_o mystery_n of_o god_n which_o none_o no_o not_o the_o prince_n and_o the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v above_o other_o most_o excellent_a be_v not_o able_a to_o understande_v second_o consider_v whether_o there_o be_v in_o thou_o any_o alteration_n or_o change_n for_o the_o wise_a man_n that_o be_v expert_a in_o nature_n can_v say_v that_o in_o every_o generation_n there_o be_v a_o corruption_n so_o that_o as_o seed_v in_o the_o ground_n so_o sin_n in_o our_o natural_a body_n shall_v decay_v that_o the_o new_a man_n may_v be_v raise_v up_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n take_v possession_n in_o our_o soul_n therefore_o the_o evangelist_n john_n do_v make_v this_o the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o it_o shall_v rebuke_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n and_o this_o so_o needful_a that_o without_o it_o there_o be_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n neither_o yet_o can_n christ_n come_v and_o enter_v into_o that_o man_n hereof_o it_o be_v that_o christ_n compare_v the_o jew_n to_o child_n in_o their_o sin_n before_o the_o proud_a pharisee_n which_o with_o no_o remorse_n be_v touch_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n it_o be_v that_o christ_n call_v unto_o he_o they_o only_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a load_v teach_v they_o that_o if_o they_o find_v not_o sin_v a_o heavy_a load_n and_o burden_n to_o they_o they_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v they_o fit_v to_o receive_v christ._n then_o to_o be_v rebuke_v of_o sin_n be_v the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o the_o spirit_n work_v in_o we_o by_o these_o degree_n first_o it_o raise_v upon_o we_o a_o great_a and_o general_a astonishment_n because_o of_o all_o these_o great_a and_o grievous_a sin_n that_o we_o have_v commit_v and_o this_o do_v strike_v we_o down_o it_o do_v terrify_v we_o and_o hold_v we_o amaze_v wonderful_o than_o it_o deal_v with_o we_o more_o particular_o and_o beside_o that_o it_o bring_v we_o unto_o a_o special_a grief_n for_o special_a sin_n do_v bereave_v we_o of_o our_o chief_a desire_n and_o bring_v we_o out_o of_o conceit_n of_o the_o best_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o we_o for_o than_o it_o do_v display_v unto_o we_o the_o vanity_n and_o darkness_n of_o our_o understanding_n how_o unfit_a and_o unmeete_a we_o be_v to_o understande_v and_o conceive_v the_o thing_n that_o do_v above_o all_o other_o especial_o concern_v we_o then_o do_v it_o let_v we_o see_v the_o perverse_a corruption_n of_o our_o judgement_n that_o before_o god_n and_o in_o thing_n belong_v to_o god_n we_o be_v bruit_n beast_n not_o able_a to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v nor_o to_o put_v a_o sound_n difference_n between_o good_a and_o evyll_n then_o do_v it_o let_v we_o see_v that_o our_o reason_n be_v unreasonable_a nay_o that_o it_o be_v hurtful_a unto_o we_o a_o great_a enemy_n to_o faith_n and_o a_o great_a patron_n of_o infidelity_n and_o unbelief_n when_o it_o come_v to_o our_o affection_n it_o turn_v they_o upside_o down_o it_o turn_v our_o mirth_n into_o mourning_n and_o pleasure_n into_o paynefulnesse_n and_o our_o great_a delight_n into_o most_o bitter_a grief_n if_o it_o proceed_v further_o and_o come_v once_o to_o the_o hart_n and_o to_o the_o stomach_n and_o courage_n that_o be_v in_o we_o than_o it_o cut_v we_o to_o the_o quick_a then_o do_v it_o at_o once_o throw_v we_o down_o in_o humility_n under_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n for_o while_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o man_n we_o be_v as_o stout_a as_o any_o and_o will_v not_o start_v for_o the_o best_a we_o have_v reason_n to_o see_v for_o ourselves_o and_o courage_n to_o defend_v ourselves_o against_o all_o they_o that_o do_v deal_v with_o we_o but_o now_o the_o spirit_n draw_v we_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n it_o let_v we_o see_v that_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n and_o that_o our_o strength_n be_v weakness_n in_o respect_n of_o he_o then_o our_o heart_n begin_v to_o fail_v we_o then_o do_v we_o lay_v our_o hand_n on_o our_o mouth_n and_o dare_v not_o answer_v then_o do_v we_o quick_o take_v up_o our_o cross_n because_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v do_v it_o
security_n which_o bring_v neglect_n and_o contempt_n of_o all_o good_a mean_n whereby_o they_o shall_v grow_v up_o in_o godliness_n on_o the_o left_a hand_n other_o offend_v be_v never_o please_v nor_o contend_v with_o the_o they_o have_v in_o deed_n forget_v and_o light_o esteem_v that_o they_o have_v and_o still_o desire_v new_a these_o man_n beside_o that_o they_o be_v unthankeful_a do_v also_o murmur_v and_o grudge_v against_o god_n and_o be_v never_o please_v with_o he_o between_o these_o two_o the_o child_n of_o god_n hold_v a_o middle_n and_o even_a course_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v see_v these_o thing_n in_o they_o first_o a_o sight_n &_o a_o acknowledge_v of_o the_o want_n which_o do_v move_v they_o as_o s._n peter_n say_v like_o new_a bear_v babe_n to_o desire_v the_o sweet_a and_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o thereby_o the_o grace_n they_o have_v may_v be_v increase_v and_o their_o other_o want_n may_v be_v supply_v and_o so_o far_o be_v they_o from_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o pride_n that_o they_o rejoice_v when_o their_o pripe_n may_v be_v pull_v down_o or_o their_o haughtiness_n abate_v either_o by_o some_o sharp_a rebuke_n or_o by_o some_o fearful_a threaten_n or_o by_o some_o moderate_a correction_n from_o the_o lord_n for_o they_o know_v if_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o s._n paul_n to_o be_v buffit_v and_o that_o by_o the_o minister_n of_o satan_n to_o the_o end_n that_o his_o pride_n may_v be_v beat_v down_o than_o it_o be_v much_o more_o needful_a for_o they_o after_o more_o way_n so_o to_o be_v humble_v beside_o that_o they_o do_v not_o only_o desire_v the_o word_n but_o they_o also_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n until_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o work_v further_o in_o they_o thereby_o and_o this_o wait_v be_v as_o earnest_a as_o they_o who_o have_v watch_v all_o the_o night_n do_v wait_n and_o look_v for_o the_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n second_o as_o they_o see_v their_o want_n so_o also_o they_o see_v that_o grace_n they_o have_v receive_v and_o for_o that_o time_n well_o appayde_v &_o content_v therewith_o and_o therefore_o as_o their_o want_n do_v humble_a they_o so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v comfort_v they_o and_o as_o their_o want_n do_v call_v upon_o they_o &_o cause_v they_o to_o seek_v more_o so_o that_o they_o have_v do_v provoke_v they_o to_o be_v thankful_a for_o that_o they_o have_v receive_v see_v then_o a_o quite_o contrary_a course_n of_o the_o wicked_a &_o those_o that_o do_v of_o sincerity_n worship_n god_n i_o say_v how_o contrary_a the_o grace_n &_o gift_n of_o
