special_a affinity_n between_o the_o air_n and_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o body_n which_o be_v the_o immediate_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n we_o of_o this_o kingdom_n have_v special_a cause_n to_o bless_v god_n for_o one_o of_o the_o sweet_a and_o most_o temperate_a air_n in_o the_o world_n serve_v much_o for_o delight_n for_o health_n for_o our_o furtherance_n even_o in_o the_o best_a thing_n if_o we_o be_v careful_a to_o make_v the_o best_a use_n of_o such_o a_o blessing_n a_o quick_a and_o kind_o air_n be_v no_o small_a help_n to_o the_o spirit_n even_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n but_o if_o he_o be_v not_o true_o unite_v to_o he_o the_o sweet_a dew_n that_o ever_o fall_v from_o heaven_n can_v keep_v spiritual_a life_n within_o he_o on_o the_o other_o side_n though_o the_o branch_n do_v receive_v life_n and_o nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n yet_o it_o want_v refreshment_n from_o the_o shower_n of_o heaven_n so_o those_o fanatical_a dreamer_n be_v to_o be_v condemn_v who_o pretend_v a_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o partake_v of_o his_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o brag_v they_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o word_n which_o come_v near_a the_o nature_n of_o the_o air_n as_o the_o foul_n have_v wing_n to_o fly_v withal_o so_o the_o fish_n have_v â—innes_n whereby_o they_o swim_v and_o that_o be_v a_o motion_n very_o like_a to_o that_o of_o fly_v yea_o some_o of_o either_o kind_n do_v communicate_v with_o each_o other_o in_o their_o element_n for_o as_o we_o have_v water-foul_n so_o there_o have_v be_v flying-fish_n in_o great_a abundance_n so_o that_o here_o you_o may_v magnify_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o in_o the_o day_n that_o these_o creature_n be_v make_v do_v imprint_v upon_o they_o such_o property_n and_o quality_n as_o shall_v be_v evidence_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n in_o some_o sort_n that_o they_o be_v but_o the_o work_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o day_n 2._o consider_v here_o that_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v the_o foul_n to_o fly_v in_o the_o air_n and_o the_o fish_n to_o swim_v in_o the_o sea_n confine_v each_o to_o his_o own_o element_n for_o the_o general_a though_o some_o few_o particular_n be_v suffer_v to_o live_v in_o both_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o walk_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o calling_n and_o not_o to_o think_v his_o heart_n spiritual_o affect_v and_o enlarge_v towards_o god_n have_v need_n of_o special_a humiliation_n special_a meditation_n pâ—aier_n and_o other_o warm_n and_o quicken_a mean_n to_o raise_v he_o up_o 3._o as_o the_o air_n give_v breath_n and_o motion_n so_o also_o it_o give_v support_v to_o the_o bird_n earth_n and_o it_o carry_v they_o even_o as_o the_o earth_n do_v the_o beast_n which_o go_v up_o and_o down_o upon_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n also_o give_v support_v unto_o all_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o christian_n by_o his_o sanctify_a virtue_n against_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n 4._o as_o these_o bird_n do_v now_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o be_v the_o foul_n create_v in_o the_o air_n at_o the_o first_o so_o whosoever_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n be_v also_o bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v his_o begin_n in_o this_o element_n 5._o consider_v that_o as_o the_o bird_n although_o they_o live_v and_o move_v in_o the_o air_n yet_o they_o come_v down_o to_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n from_o the_o earth_n so_o the_o lord_n allow_v his_o child_n to_o receive_v some_o nourishment_n from_o the_o earth_n and_o to_o partake_v of_o its_o refreshment_n yet_o so_o as_o they_o must_v not_o delight_v in_o the_o earth_n as_o in_o their_o element_n nor_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o earth_n as_o their_o chief_a contentment_n but_o like_o the_o bird_n of_o heaven_n have_v supply_v their_o necessity_n must_v be_v ready_a to_o soar_v aloft_o again_o and_o not_o in_o their_o affection_n be_v still_o grovel_v here_o below_o 6._o you_o see_v how_o spare_o the_o bird_n take_v of_o the_o water_n a_o bird_n do_v not_o drink_v like_o a_o beast_n it_o rather_o sip_v so_o shall_v a_o christian_n spare_o use_v the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n rather_o sip_v like_o the_o bird_n than_o swill_v like_o the_o swine_n as_o for_o those_o that_o give_v themselves_o to_o drink_v down_o iniquity_n like_o water_n and_o to_o commit_v sin_n with_o greediness_n they_o be_v none_o of_o those_o who_o have_v their_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n nay_o those_o that_o glut_v be_v none_o of_o those_o that_o be_v bear_v up_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n above_o the_o earth_n consider_v how_o little_a content_v one_o of_o these_o creature_n and_o then_o learn_v to_o be_v ashamed_a that_o thy_o appetite_n be_v so_o much_o beyond_o thy_o necessity_n and_o practice_v mortification_n as_o far_o as_o we_o can_v guess_v the_o bird_n take_v more_o delight_n in_o fly_v and_o sing_v than_o they_o do_v in_o feed_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v soon_o do_v with_o this_o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n be_v more_o delight_v in_o converse_v with_o god_n in_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n in_o run_v the_o way_n of_o his_o commandment_n than_o in_o serve_v the_o necessity_n of_o nature_n yea_o it_o shall_v be_v his_o meat_n and_o drink_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o bird_n to_o sing_v and_o soar_v aloft_o again_o as_o the_o bird_n use_v not_o these_o thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v her_o unfit_a to_o fly_v so_o a_o christian_a must_v not_o abuse_v meat_n and_o drink_n so_o as_o to_o clog_v and_o dull_v his_o spirit_n and_o make_v he_o more_o dull_a and_o dead_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o so_o to_o refresh_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o cheerful_a and_o lively_a in_o his_o heavenly_a flight_n 7._o as_o the_o bird_n not_o sow_v nor_o gather_v into_o barnes_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o yet_o be_v feed_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o shall_v a_o child_n of_o god_n depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n without_o distrustful_a ear_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n though_o not_o without_o moderate_a and_o christian_n care_n which_o serve_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n 8._o as_o the_o bird_n have_v find_v somewhat_o to_o satisfy_v its_o hunger_n by_o its_o they_o so_o when_o a_o christian_a be_v most_o raise_v in_o spiritual_a affection_n to_o the_o great_a height_n of_o heavenly-mindedness_a keep_v near_a heaven_n than_o be_v the_o earth_n far_o out_o of_o sight_n and_o he_o be_v least_o move_v with_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o best_a able_a to_o contemn_v earthly_a vanity_n he_o be_v too_o far_o above_o these_o to_o be_v much_o affect_v towards_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v of_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n mind_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o and_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o help_v ourselves_o against_o earthly_a affection_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n think_v with_o thyself_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o i_o be_o so_o earthly-minded_n that_o my_o affection_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o this_o or_o that_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o can_v come_v off_o nor_o free_v myself_o that_o i_o can_v scarce_o persuade_v my_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v without_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v this_o because_o my_o heart_n be_v not_o carry_v aloft_o it_o draw_v too_o near_o the_o ground_n it_o withdraw_v too_o much_o from_o god_n if_o i_o shall_v keep_v up_o my_o heart_n close_o to_o god_n these_o thing_n will_v be_v out_o of_o sight_n the_o earth_n will_v seldom_o be_v in_o my_o thought_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o work_v much_o upon_o my_o affection_n on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o see_v that_o those_o bird_n which_o use_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o ground_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o those_o that_o use_v about_o our_o house_n so_o also_o those_o christian_n that_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o the_o deal_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o have_v but_o slow_a affection_n and_o sluggish_a motion_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o go_v but_o cold_o about_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bear_v we_o upward_o 11._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o bird_n can_v mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o yet_o light_a upon_o the_o earth_n too_o and_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n there_o whereas_o the_o beast_n can_v mount_v up_o and_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_a can_v and_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o natural_a comfort_n and_o refreshment_n of_o this_o life_n though_o in_o a_o moderate_a manner_n and_o measure_n as_o well_o as_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v mount_v up_o to_o heaven_n can_v live_v in_o the_o air_n can_v live_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v no_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_v all_o thing_n he_o can_v discern_v what_o be_v in_o nature_n but_o himself_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n his_o excellency_n can_v be_v discern_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o nature_n 12._o again_o as_o the_o bird_n live_v in_o a_o stormy_a element_n and_o feel_v much_o alteration_n of_o weather_n heat_n cold_a wind_n etc._n etc._n as_o the_o air_n be_v the_o most_o unsettle_a of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o creation_n so_o christian_n do_v live_v in_o a_o condition_n subject_a to_o manifold_a alteration_n subject_a to_o many_o storm_n of_o persecution_n and_o temptation_n and_o as_o the_o bird_n be_v then_o especial_o in_o danger_n by_o snare_n and_o gin_n when_o they_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o which_o they_o be_v not_o subject_a when_o they_o be_v aloft_o in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_n be_v then_o in_o danger_n to_o be_v ensnare_v and_o entangle_v when_o he_o deal_v with_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v most_o affect_a to_o the_o thing_n below_o when_o he_o be_v most_o heavenly-minded_n then_o be_v he_o most_o out_o of_o danger_n of_o these_o snare_n 13._o the_o bird_n in_o the_o air_n meet_v with_o bird_n of_o prey_n there_o also_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o and_o destroy_v they_o so_o the_o devil_n who_o be_v call_v the_o prince_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o air_n do_v especial_o choose_v to_o assault_v those_o that_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o then_o when_o they_o be_v most_o spiritual_a endeavour_v to_o pull_v down_o those_o that_o be_v high_a in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o david_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o special_a watchfulness_n must_v be_v use_v by_o such_o 14._o as_o the_o bird_n be_v of_o all_o other_o live_v creature_n the_o most_o cheerful_a as_o they_o be_v high_a above_o the_o earth_n and_o near_a heaven_n so_o shall_v a_o christian_a labour_n of_o all_o other_o man_n to_o be_v most_o cheerful_a &_o replenish_v with_o heavenly_a joy_n as_o he_o be_v near_a heaven_n and_o far_o from_o the_o earth_n than_o other_o god_n be_v infinite_a in_o all_o goodness_n and_o happiness_n and_o the_o near_a to_o god_n the_o more_o happy_a and_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o cheerfulness_n as_o the_o bird_n be_v most_o cheerful_a in_o a_o clear_a sun-shiny_a day_n so_o be_v a_o christian_n when_o the_o light_n of_o god_n of_o grace_n in_o his_o soul_n and_o a_o near_a approach_n of_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n and_o a_o special_a warmth_n of_o god_n love_n be_v shed_v abroad_o into_o his_o heart_n as_o the_o bird_n by_o chirp_a do_v set_v other_o on_o sing_v and_o many_o join_v together_o in_o consort_n so_o one_o christian_n shall_v draw_v another_o by_o example_n to_o yield_v up_o sweet_a song_n of_o praise_n to_o god_n and_o many_o shall_v join_v together_o with_o one_o spirit_n to_o glorify_v the_o lord_n as_o the_o bird_n sing_v although_o they_o know_v not_o where_o to_o have_v their_o next_o over_o they_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o general_a frame_n sect_n 2._o now_o come_v we_o to_o the_o particular_a part_n and_o therein_o let_v we_o consider_v i._o those_o that_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o rest_n namely_o the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n 1._o for_o the_o blood_n you_o know_v it_o be_v a_o excellent_a part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n insomuch_o that_o the_o blood_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o body_n which_o must_v not_o be_v understand_v direct_o as_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o imply_v as_o if_o the_o life_n of_o a_o man_n be_v nothing_o but_o his_o blood_n for_o that_o be_v not_o possible_a if_o that_o be_v so_o then_o nothing_o can_v live_v which_o have_v no_o blood_n but_o this_o be_v certain_a that_o bee_n and_o many_o other_o like_o creature_n have_v no_o blood_n and_o yet_o have_v life_n it_o will_v also_o follow_v that_o so_o many_o drop_n of_o a_o man_n blood_n as_o he_o lose_v so_o much_o he_o lose_v of_o his_o life_n whereas_o many_o time_n the_o evacuation_n of_o blood_n be_v the_o preservation_n of_o life_n and_o that_o which_o be_v most_o absurd_a it_o will_v follow_v that_o a_o man_n life_n may_v be_v sever_v from_o he_o and_o yet_o remain_v for_o a_o time_n after_o such_o separation_n for_o so_o you_o see_v that_o the_o blood_n of_o man_n and_o of_o other_o creature_n may_v be_v keep_v a_o long_a time_n in_o vessel_n after_o it_o be_v sever_v from_o the_o body_n and_o beside_o all_o this_o the_o angel_n who_o have_v neither_o blood_n nor_o other_o bodily_a part_n have_v life_n in_o great_a perfection_n than_o a_o man_n thus_o than_o we_o understand_v these_o place_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o the_o blood_n that_o it_o be_v a_o special_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o life_n be_v convey_v to_o the_o several_a part_n of_o the_o body_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o airy_a invisible_a substance_n yet_o bodily_a arise_v like_o vapour_n â—rom_o the_o pure_a part_n of_o the_o blood_n for_o although_o it_o be_v say_v the_o life_n be_v in_o the_o blood_n yet_o this_o be_v because_o the_o blood_n be_v a_o thing_n which_o be_v more_o obvious_a to_o the_o sense_n than_o the_o spirit_n and_o again_o because_o it_o be_v the_o nursery_n and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o fuel_n of_o the_o spirit_n whereby_o as_o by_o a_o precious_a oil_n the_o lamp_n and_o flame_n of_o life_n be_v cherish_v and_o maintain_v so_o that_o life_n be_v more_o immediate_o in_o the_o spirit_n than_o in_o the_o blood_n again_o life_n be_v lose_v by_o the_o shed_n of_o the_o blood_n because_o the_o spirit_n the_o immediate_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o it_o communicate_v life_n to_o the_o body_n be_v extinguish_v by_o the_o shed_n of_o the_o blood_n even_o as_o the_o flame_n go_v out_o when_o the_o wood_n be_v quiâ—e_o take_v away_o and_o so_o in_o this_o respect_n also_o the_o blood_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n moreover_o consider_v the_o spirit_n whereof_o somewhat_o have_v already_o be_v speak_v by_o the_o way_n these_o be_v call_v spirit_n not_o but_o that_o they_o be_v bodily_a substance_n but_o because_o they_o have_v the_o least_o grossness_n in_o they_o of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o come_v near_a to_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n and_o these_o be_v indeed_o the_o immediate_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v as_o it_o be_v of_o a_o middle_a nature_n between_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n they_o be_v a_o common_a tie_n or_o bond_n between_o they_o both_o unite_n both_o together_o these_o be_v of_o most_o excellent_a use_n in_o the_o body_n throughout_o the_o part_n they_o convey_v life_n sense_n and_o motion_n to_o they_o all_o they_o be_v in_o special_a manner_n employ_v in_o the_o more_o retire_v and_o spiritual_a action_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n in_o the_o serious_a thought_n and_o meditation_n of_o the_o heart_n by_o it_o the_o pain_n or_o delight_n of_o one_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v convey_v and_o impart_v to_o the_o rest_n and_o a_o sympathy_n or_o fellow_n feeling_n be_v derive_v from_o one_o to_o the_o other_o and_o in_o these_o the_o singular_a wisdom_n of_o the_o creator_n be_v notable_o manifest_v sect_n 3._o the_o part_n contain_v these_o be_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o be_v consider_v where_o first_o the_o head_n be_v that_o which_o be_v set_v in_o the_o high_a place_n and_o be_v full_a of_o most_o curious_a workmanship_n it_o be_v the_o seat_n themselves_o whicâ—_n by_o the_o air_n be_v convey_v into_o the_o eye_n if_o this_o be_v well_o consider_v and_o understand_v it_o will_v be_v find_v one_o of_o the_o most_o wonderful_a work_n of_o deformity_n which_o thou_o see_v in_o any_o not_o move_v thou_o to_o contemn_v their_o person_n but_o rather_o to_o lament_v the_o common_a misery_n of_o man_n nature_n fall_v into_o sin_n the_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o then_o of_o its_o power_n and_o faculty_n 1._o for_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o herein_o most_o like_a unto_o the_o angel_n of_o any_o other_o creature_n and_o though_o the_o wise_a man_n do_v communicate_v this_o name_n to_o the_o life_n of_o a_o beast_n yet_o he_o show_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o these_o two_o sort_n of_o spirit_n say_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n that_o go_v upward_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o beast_n that_o go_v downward_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o beast_n or_o that_o which_o give_v a_o man_n be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n than_o any_o of_o these_o gross_a material_a body_n and_o not_o rise_v out_o of_o they_o but_o be_v create_v immediate_o of_o god_n the_o father_n of_o spirit_n it_o go_v upward_o it_o be_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o judgement_n after_o its_o departure_n from_o the_o body_n 2._o it_o be_v such_o a_o spirit_n as_o can_v subsist_v alone_o of_o it_o self_n out_o of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o apostle_n make_v mention_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o just_a man_n make_v perfect_a heb._n 12._o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o saint_n now_o in_o heaven_n who_o body_n rest_v in_o the_o dust_n and_o this_o show_v the_o excellent_a matter_n of_o man_n spirit_n far_o above_o the_o life_n of_o the_o beast_n or_o any_o unreasonable_a creature_n that_o it_o can_v subsist_v when_o it_o be_v sever_v from_o the_o body_n this_o show_v that_o it_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o the_o body_n nor_o be_v extract_v out_o of_o it_o but_o rather_o that_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o body_n depend_v on_o it_o it_o can_v live_v without_o the_o body_n but_o the_o body_n without_o it_o rot_v putrefy_v and_o moulder_v away_o into_o dust_n dust_n return_v to_o dust_n as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o wise_a man_n and_o the_o spirit_n return_v to_o he_o that_o give_v it_o eccles._n 12._o 3._o it_o be_v a_o immortal_a spirit_n so_o this_o very_a place_n show_v that_o when_o dust_n return_v to_o dust_n when_o the_o body_n dissolve_v than_o the_o spirit_n live_v and_o yield_v up_o itself_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n show_v both_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o of_o the_o wicked_a the_o one_o shall_v go_v into_o life_n eternal_a and_o the_o other_o into_o everlasting_a punishment_n sect_n 2._o in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o speak_v of_o the_o power_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n here_o i_o shall_v speak_v first_o of_o those_o which_o be_v common_a to_o it_o with_o other_o creature_n viz._n those_o which_o they_o call_v vegetative_a and_o sensitive_a which_o be_v find_v in_o the_o beast_n and_o bird_n these_o i_o call_v faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n although_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o concieve_v they_o not_o to_o be_v proper_o inherent_a in_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n but_o rather_o in_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n for_o the_o intellectual_a soul_n be_v a_o spirit_n i_o can_v see_v how_o these_o brutish_a affection_n such_o as_o many_o of_o these_o be_v can_v be_v inherent_a in_o it_o especial_o because_o many_o of_o they_o as_o the_o faculty_n of_o attraction_n retention_n expulsion_n augmentation_n etc._n etc._n be_v ordinary_o exercise_v not_o only_o without_o the_o command_n but_o also_o without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n which_o i_o know_v not_o how_o it_o can_v be_v if_o they_o be_v inherent_a in_o it_o immediate_o it_o be_v a_o single_a spiritual_a and_o intellectual_a be_v now_o these_o faculty_n be_v many_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v and_o show_v his_o admirable_a wisdom_n in_o they_o 1._o of_o the_o vegetative_a part_n there_o be_v a_o nutritive_a or_o nourish_a property_n to_o which_o diverse_a other_o be_v serviceable_a as_o that_o of_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n which_o be_v proper_o a_o branch_n of_o the_o sensitive_a yet_o insensible_a creature_n be_v a_o servant_n to_o the_o vegetative_a for_o by_o these_o the_o appetite_n be_v provoke_v to_o seek_v for_o nourishment_n there_o be_v a_o digest_v faculty_n to_o concoct_v that_o nourishment_n that_o be_v receive_v first_o in_o the_o stomach_n then_o in_o the_o liver_n turn_v it_o into_o blood_n then_o in_o each_o several_a part_n turn_v it_o into_o substance_n in_o particular_a to_o these_o also_o belong_v these_o three_o inferior_a faculty_n attractive_a retentive_a expulsive_a 1._o attractive_a whereby_o every_o part_n have_v a_o power_n to_o draw_v nourishment_n unto_o itself_o so_o the_o head_n and_o upper_a part_n of_o the_o
body_n have_v a_o power_n to_o draw_v blood_n from_o the_o liver_n which_o be_v far_o below_o they_o as_o well_o as_o the_o low_a part_n and_o in_o this_o the_o wonderful_a wisdom_n of_o god_n be_v clear_o manifest_v 2._o there_o be_v a_o retentive_a faculty_n or_o a_o power_n of_o keep_v that_o nourishment_n a_o convenient_a time_n till_o it_o may_v be_v so_o wrought_v upon_o and_o perfect_v as_o to_o turn_v into_o one_o substance_n with_o the_o body_n and_o to_o refresh_v its_o part_n but_o lâ—st_v nature_n shall_v suck_v poison_n instead_o of_o nourishment_n or_o digest_v that_o into_o its_o substance_n which_o be_v hurtful_a 3._o the_o lord_n have_v add_v for_o its_o far_a security_n and_o benefit_n a_o expulsive_a faculty_n or_o a_o power_n of_o cast_v out_o such_o matter_n as_o be_v superfluous_a and_o burdensome_a and_o not_o fit_a for_o nourishment_n whence_o come_v many_o flux_n from_o the_o head_n and_o sweat_v over_o the_o whole_a body_n beside_o those_o gross_a excrement_n whereof_o nature_n be_v daily_o â—ased_v in_o these_o also_o the_o admirable_a wisdom_n of_o god_n be_v manifest_v and_o when_o we_o enjoy_v the_o use_n of_o any_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n we_o shall_v glorify_v he_o that_o make_v they_o moreover_o there_o be_v also_o a_o generative_a faculty_n or_o power_n of_o propagation_n which_o god_n give_v to_o tree_n plant_n beast_n bird_n fish_n man_n blessing_n they_o and_o bid_v they_o to_o increase_v and_o multiply_v sect_n 3._o 2._o of_o the_o sensitive_a part_n there_o be_v both_o the_o sense_n and_o the_o affection_n the_o sense_n outward_a and_o inward_a of_o the_o outward_a sense_n somewhat_o be_v brief_o speak_v when_o we_o speak_v of_o those_o part_n of_o the_o body_n that_o be_v instrument_n of_o those_o sense_n the_o inward_a sense_n be_v conceive_v to_o be_v three_o the_o common_a sense_n the_o fancy_n the_o memory_n 1._o the_o common_a sense_n which_o be_v say_v to_o receive_v the_o object_n of_o all_o the_o outward_a sense_n and_o to_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n 2._o the_o fancy_n or_o imagination_n which_o work_v upon_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o former_a and_o be_v think_v to_o be_v place_v in_o the_o middle_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n 3._o the_o memory_n which_o keep_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v receive_v in_o by_o the_o other_o and_o lay_v they_o up_o as_o in_o a_o treasury_n and_o the_o seat_n of_o this_o be_v in_o the_o hindermost_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o in_o this_o most_o admirable_a be_v the_o wisdom_n and_o power_n of_o god_n that_o certain_a image_n of_o thing_n long_o since_o see_v or_o hear_v shall_v be_v lay_v up_o in_o a_o corner_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o there_o preserve_v many_o year_n and_o call_v to_o mind_n though_o they_o be_v the_o resemblance_n of_o many_o thousand_o several_a thing_n some_o memory_n be_v far_o worse_o than_o other_o yet_o even_o the_o mean_a ordinary_a memory_n be_v wonderful_a if_o we_o do_v right_o consider_v that_o in_o so_o narrow_a a_o compass_n the_o shape_n and_o likeness_n of_o so_o many_o several_a thing_n shall_v be_v preserve_v yea_o even_o this_o be_v notable_a that_o the_o image_n of_o so_o many_o man_n face_n as_o one_o man_n can_v remember_v shall_v be_v there_o engrave_v in_o so_o small_a a_o table_n as_o be_v the_o memory_n sect_n 4._o of_o the_o affection_n as_o for_o the_o affection_n they_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o these_o be_v many_o as_o 1._o love_n which_o be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n unite_n itself_o to_o some_o thing_n apprehend_v as_o good_a for_o so_o whatsoever_o be_v belove_v love_n either_o be_v good_a or_o seem_v to_o have_v some_o good_a in_o it_o to_o he_o that_o love_v it_o contrary_a to_o which_o be_v a_o second_o affection_n sc_n hatred_n hatred_n and_o that_o be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n shune_v and_o separate_n itself_o from_o that_o which_o be_v so_o hate_a as_o suppose_v hurtful_a for_o though_o good_a thing_n be_v often_o hate_v yet_o there_o be_v a_o apprehension_n of_o evil_n in_o they_o and_o if_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o affection_n as_o create_v of_o god_n than_o nothing_o be_v belove_v but_o that_o which_o be_v true_o good_a nor_o hate_v but_o that_o which_o be_v true_o evil_a but_o of_o the_o integrity_n of_o the_o affection_n we_o may_v speak_v when_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o man._n desire_v be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n reach_v after_o some_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v absent_a desire_n contrary_a to_o which_o be_v detestation_n detestation_n or_o abhor_v of_o that_o which_o may_v hereafter_o happen_v be_v conceive_v to_o be_v evil_a these_o two_o may_v be_v express_v by_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o on_o the_o other_o a_o loathe_n of_o meat_n in_o the_o stomach_n when_o the_o heart_n rise_v with_o dislike_n at_o some_o thing_n which_o as_o yet_o be_v absent_a but_o be_v tender_v to_o it_o or_o may_v hereafter_o be_v present_v to_o it_o when_o our_o saviour_n tell_v peter_n that_o he_o will_v fall_v into_o that_o fearful_a sin_n of_o deny_v his_o lord_n and_o master_n his_o heart_n rise_v against_o it_o and_o he_o detest_v it_o this_o be_v not_o only_o a_o simple_a and_o mere_a hatred_n of_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n evil_a which_o be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o love_v but_o also_o a_o detestation_n of_o it_o as_o a_o evil_a that_o may_v happen_v or_o be_v foretell_v shall_v happen_v to_o he_o though_o now_o he_o be_v free_a from_o it_o which_o be_v a_o affection_n contrary_a to_o desire_v in_o the_o next_o place_n be_v joy_n which_o be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n please_v and_o rest_v itself_o in_o some_o good_a thing_n proper_a and_o peculiar_a quality_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will_n and_o such_o as_o be_v seat_v in_o these_o or_o compound_v of_o these_o the_o it_o so_o be_v a_o picture_n or_o a_o statue_n make_v by_o art_n to_o represent_v some_o person_n and_o such_o be_v the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o man_n for_o the_o lord_n do_v purposely_o as_o you_o see_v by_o the_o consultation_n make_v man_n like_o himself_o to_o resemble_v he_o and_o to_o bear_v his_o image_n sect_n 2._o in_o the_o second_o place_n i_o come_v to_o show_v wherein_o this_o image_n of_o god_n in_o man_n consist_v and_o what_o it_o be_v this_o be_v in_o general_n that_o perfection_n which_o god_n give_v unto_o man_n in_o his_o first_o creation_n general_n for_o god_n be_v unite_v to_o himself_o not_o the_o nature_n of_o angel_n but_o of_o man_n so_o god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v choose_v rather_o to_o speak_v by_o man_n to_o the_o angel_n in_o this_o mystery_n they_o also_o believe_v and_o tremble_v they_o be_v constant_a hearer_n and_o it_o may_v well_o be_v think_v that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o sermon_n which_o be_v likely_a to_o bring_v any_o danger_n to_o their_o kingdom_n but_o that_o some_o of_o they_o be_v present_a though_o for_o no_o good_a intent_n yea_o when_o they_o hinder_v other_o from_o learning_n yet_o they_o learn_v themselves_o though_o they_o never_o mean_v to_o practice_v and_o as_o the_o angel_n good_a and_o evil_n have_v increase_v their_o knowledge_n in_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ_n so_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o they_o have_v do_v the_o like_a in_o other_o thing_n by_o their_o long_a experience_n now_o you_o must_v not_o think_v there_o be_v a_o essential_a or_o natural_a difference_n between_o the_o good_a and_o evil_a angel_n though_o they_o differ_v exceed_o in_o regard_n of_o moral_a good_a or_o evil_n no_o more_o than_o there_o be_v between_o good_a and_o evil_a men._n peter_n and_o judas_n be_v both_o
