glory_n and_o all_o confidence_n in_o a_o man_n self_n object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v unto_o i_o that_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o discourage_v a_o man_n from_o any_o way_n look_v after_o that_o life_n of_o faith_n because_o it_o be_v so_o mean_a answ_n i_o answer_v to_o that_o in_o a_o word_n that_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n it_o shall_v discourage_v for_o it_o be_v better_a for_o we_o a_o great_a deal_n consider_v what_o we_o be_v to_o have_v in_o this_o way_n than_o any_o other_o for_o first_o god_n will_v look_v better_o to_o we_o than_o we_o can_v look_v to_o ourselves_o as_o a_o bird_n in_o the_o cage_n be_v more_o tender_v and_o better_o provide_v for_o then_o she_o can_v be_v if_o she_o have_v her_o liberty_n in_o the_o wild_a waste_n fly_v up_o and_o down_o in_o the_o vast_a wilderness_n we_o live_v upon_o god_n but_o we_o live_v upon_o one_o that_o be_v bountiful_a and_o liberal_a and_o one_o that_o have_v enough_o and_o one_o that_o think_v nothing_o too_o much_o to_o give_v to_o we_o be_v our_o estate_n in_o our_o own_o hand_n we_o will_v quick_o spend_v it_o or_o engage_v and_o mortgage_v it_o and_o bring_v ourselves_o under_o wrath_n which_o now_o the_o lord_n prevent_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o live_v upon_o god_n by_o faith_n be_v exceed_o glorious_a unto_o god_n for_o upon_o this_o account_n he_o have_v glory_n that_o he_o do_v provide_v for_o we_o all_o thing_n that_o do_v belong_v unto_o life_n and_o godliness_n yea._n second_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sweetness_n in_o this_o life_n as_o a_o bit_n you_o know_v from_o a_o prince_n hand_n at_o his_o table_n have_v more_o sweetness_n in_o it_o then_o a_o whole_a dish_n what_o ever_o provision_n we_o can_v make_v for_o ourselves_o can_v not_o carry_v that_o refresh_n to_o the_o heart_n which_o the_o least_o thing_n do_v which_o we_o receive_v from_o god_n by_o christ_n through_o faith_n for_o it_o carry_v this_o with_o it_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n the_o favour_n and_o love_a kindness_n of_o god_n his_o wisdom_n which_o cut_v out_o this_o portion_n for_o i_o who_o know_v what_o be_v better_o for_o we_o than_o we_o can_v choose_v for_o ourselves_o last_o to_o say_v no_o more_o though_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n be_v mean_a in_o itself_o yet_o this_o shall_v encourage_v to_o it_o because_o it_o be_v so_o mean_a therefore_o pride_n be_v hide_v from_o your_o eye_n there_o be_v nothing_o that_o hinder_v a_o man_n more_o from_o receive_v from_o god_n than_o pride_n do_v jam._n 4.6_o he_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a but_o he_o resist_v the_o proud_a there_o be_v nothing_o more_o burdensome_a to_o a_o believer_n than_o pride_n of_o heart_n be_v pride_n of_o heart_n be_v unto_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o believer_n like_o the_o swell_n of_o a_o joint_n which_o put_v to_o extreme_a pain_n say_v the_o soul_n in_o itself_o i_o have_v nothing_o and_o can_v do_v nothing_o and_o be_o nothing_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o i_o be_o lift_v up_o as_o if_o i_o want_v in_o no_o kind_n as_o you_o know_v it_o be_v say_v concern_v the_o church_n of_o laodicea_n to_o be_v poor_a and_o yet_o proud_a to_o borrow_v and_o yet_o to_o carry_v it_o as_o if_o we_o be_v behold_v to_o none_o be_v as_o great_a wickedness_n as_o possible_o can_v be_v before_o the_o lord_n because_o all_o this_o be_v hinder_v by_o faith_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o great_a encouragement_n to_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n though_o it_o be_v a_o mean_a life_n in_o comparison_n chap._n xx._n application_n the_o reason_n why_o believer_n be_v tempt_v to_o pride_n where_o there_o be_v true_a faith_n there_o be_v humility_n of_o spirit_n and_o that_o be_v manifest_v in_o four_o particular_n 1_o in_o modesty_n 2_o in_o a_o sense_n of_o its_o own_o condition_n before_o grace_n 3_o in_o a_o acknowledgement_n of_o all_o that_o be_v in_o a_o man_n to_o be_v from_o god_n 4_o in_o make_v a_o man_n wary_a and_o faithful_a in_o the_o use_n of_o what_o he_o have_v receive_v use_v all_o that_o i_o shall_v say_v by_o way_n of_o use_n and_o so_o pass_v on_o unto_o the_o next_o be_v this_o first_o you_o may_v from_o hence_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o believer_n be_v so_o much_o tempt_v unto_o pride_n unto_o pride_n in_o think_v of_o themselves_o otherwise_o than_o be_v meet_v as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v unto_o pride_n in_o neglect_v good_a work_n as_o necessary_a unto_o the_o attain_n and_o perfect_v of_o eternal_a life_n as_o some_o that_o be_v well_o bear_v and_o descend_v can_v endure_v to_o fall_v unto_o mean_a employment_n so_o do_v the_o devil_n labour_n to_o put_v it_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n that_o they_o need_v not_o be_v so_o careful_a in_o duty_n nor_o so_o strict_a and_o exact_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o law_n for_o they_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o bear_v unto_o eternal_a life_n as_o their_o inheritance_n now_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o devil_n do_v labour_n to_o stir_v the_o saint_n to_o this_o be_v because_o that_o pride_n be_v the_o most_o contrary_a unto_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o condition_n we_o be_v put_v into_o through_o believe_v for_o to_o see_v as_o i_o say_v now_o a_o beggar_n proud_a or_o a_o servant_n reign_v to_o see_v a_o alm_n man_n who_o be_v clothe_v of_o mere_a mercy_n to_o jet_v and_o strut_v as_o if_o he_o be_v clothe_v in_o gold_n of_o his_o own_o be_v the_o most_o uncomely_a sight_n in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o uncome_o do_v we_o behave_v ourselves_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n when_o because_o of_o the_o state_n we_o be_v in_o we_o grow_v proud_a for_o what_o have_v you_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o for_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o you_o have_v but_o what_o you_o have_v receive_v and_o again_o hence_o it_o do_v appear_v that_o where_o ever_o there_o be_v true_a faith_n there_o will_v be_v humbleness_n of_o spirit_n for_o the_o spirit_n be_v suit_v to_o the_o condition_n and_o life_n which_o faith_n bring_v in_o from_o christ_n but_o it_o empty_v the_o soul_n of_o itself_o according_a as_o it_o do_v bring_v in_o so_o much_o a_o mean_a opinion_n a_o man_n grow_v into_o of_o himself_o as_o he_o grow_v more_o into_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v this_o temper_n of_o heart_n in_o a_o believer_n that_o as_o he_o rejoice_v in_o this_o that_o he_o have_v much_o in_o god_n hand_n to_o receive_v so_o also_o he_o do_v walk_v humble_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o phil._n 2.12_o 13._o he_o work_v out_o his_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a why_o because_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o he_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v and_o if_o a_o man_n will_v make_v a_o judgement_n of_o himself_o whether_o he_o be_v in_o the_o faith_n or_o not_o if_o he_o will_v discern_v whether_o he_o have_v receive_v jesus_n christ_n unto_o the_o salvation_n of_o his_o soul_n or_o not_o he_o may_v know_v it_o by_o this_o as_o soon_o as_o by_o any_o thing_n do_v thy_o spirit_n grow_v more_o humble_a be_v thou_o more_o vile_a
in_o thy_o own_o eye_n see_v thou_o less_o worth_a nay_o no_o worth_n in_o thyself_o do_v the_o manifestation_n or_o communication_n of_o grace_n from_o christ_n make_v thou_o to_o abhor_v and_o loathe_v thyself_o but_o i_o shall_v speak_v a_o little_a more_o to_o this_o particular_a by_o show_v you_o that_o where_o ever_o indeed_o there_o be_v true_a faith_n there_o be_v humbleness_n of_o spirit_n manifest_v in_o these_o four_o particular_n there_o be_v four_o particular_n i_o say_v wherein_o humbleness_n of_o spirit_n do_v always_o show_v itself_o in_o a_o believer_n first_o in_o modesty_n or_o sobriety_n not_o assume_v unto_o its_o self_n the_o do_n of_o any_o thing_n or_o be_v the_o motive_n unto_o god_n or_o the_o reason_n why_o god_n shall_v do_v any_o thing_n to_o he_o not_o unto_o we_o o_o lord_n not_o unto_o we_o but_o to_o thy_o name_n be_v the_o praise_n be_v the_o voice_n of_o faith_n according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o psalmist_n psal_n 115.1_o i_o live_v say_v paul_n yet_o not_o i_o but_o christ_n that_o live_v in_o i_o gal._n 2_o 20._o i_o have_v do_v more_o than_o they_o all_o yet_o not_o i_o but_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o i_o 1_o cor._n 15.10_o and_o as_o the_o psalmist_n say_v in_o another_o case_n we_o get_v not_o the_o victory_n by_o our_o own_o strength_n and_o sword_n but_o it_o be_v thy_o hand_n and_o power_n that_o give_v we_o the_o victory_n psal_n 44.3_o so_o the_o soul_n say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o its_o pray_n or_o hear_v or_o any_o thing_n whereby_o it_o do_v attain_v unto_o any_o favour_n with_o god_n or_o any_o degree_n of_o grace_n but_o only_o because_o the_o lord_n so_o please_v as_o there_o can_v be_v no_o reason_n give_v why_o the_o rain_n shall_v fall_v upon_o one_o ground_n and_o not_o upon_o another_o but_o only_o because_o the_o lord_n reign_v and_o rule_n in_o heaven_n so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o reason_n give_v say_v the_o soul_n why_o i_o that_o be_o a_o barren_a desert_n shall_v have_v any_o life_n rain_v on_o i_o but_o only_o because_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o he_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n second_o the_o humbleness_n of_o faith_n show_v itself_o in_o a_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o that_o condition_n which_o a_o man_n be_v in_o before_o he_o do_v receive_v grace_n as_o a_o man_n unto_o who_o a_o prosperous_a estate_n be_v sanctify_v he_o remember_v his_o poor_a estate_n and_o low_a condition_n so_o do_v a_o man_n now_o that_o have_v receive_v by_o faith_n from_o christ_n remember_v what_o state_n he_o be_v in_o when_o christ_n first_o come_v and_o give_v he_o somewhat_o and_o bestow_v himself_o upon_o he_o here_o the_o apostle_n paul_n speak_v of_o it_o in_o 1_o tim._n 1.13_o i_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n and_o injurious_a and_o a_o persecutor_n and_o the_o chief_a of_o all_o sinner_n and_o eph._n 2.3_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n that_o be_v we_o that_o be_v now_o quicken_v and_o who_o be_v now_o raise_v up_o together_o with_o jesus_n christ_n child_n of_o wrath_n as_o well_o as_o other_o and_o under_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o air_n even_o the_o devil_n who_o rule_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o child_n of_o disobedience_n as_o we_o be_v and_o therefore_o upon_o all_o occasion_n you_o know_v he_o be_v up_o with_o his_o conversion_n tell_v what_o a_o ill_a course_n he_o be_v in_o and_o what_o wickedness_n he_o be_v practise_v when_o the_o lord_n light_v on_o he_o as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o divers_a place_n in_o the_o acts._n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o there_o be_v a_o passionate_a sense_n of_o a_o man_n misery_n which_o do_v cease_v when_o a_o man_n have_v receive_v mercy_n that_o be_v a_o man_n can_v so_o mourn_v nor_o a_o man_n can_v so_o weep_v and_o lament_v as_o he_o do_v do_v yet_o there_o be_v a_o understand_a sense_n a_o sense_n that_o lie_v upon_o the_o heart_n as_o sure_a though_o it_o work_v not_o after_o the_o same_o way_n and_o as_o clear_v though_o it_o have_v not_o the_o self_n same_o passion_n that_o be_v before_o though_o the_o wound_n be_v heal_v yet_o there_o be_v a_o scar_n that_o put_v in_o mind_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n have_v be_v please_v to_o take_v away_o the_o danger_n yet_o the_o soul_n can_v but_o stand_v and_o wonder_n at_o that_o condition_n wherein_o it_o be_v when_o the_o lord_n deliver_v it_o that_o be_v the_o second_o three_o the_o humbleness_n which_o faith_n work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n be_v this_o the_o acknowledgement_n and_o own_n of_o all_o that_o be_v in_o a_o man_n unto_o god_n as_o we_o be_v wont_v to_o write_v in_o the_o book_n that_o be_v give_v we_o the_o gift_n of_o such_o a_o friend_n or_o such_o a_o friend_n or_o as_o jacob_n say_v he_o come_v over_o that_o brook_n with_o a_o staff_n in_o his_o hand_n and_o now_o he_o have_v so_o many_o band_n but_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v they_o to_o he_o behold_v i_o and_o the_o child_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v i_o or_o as_o jacob_n say_v at_o another_o time_n when_o his_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v if_o there_o have_v not_o be_v more_o do_v by_o another_o than_o be_v by_o ourselves_o if_o we_o have_v be_v leave_v to_o do_v for_o ourselves_o we_o have_v never_o come_v to_o this_o state_n of_o grace_n wherein_o we_o be_v we_o be_v but_o like_o clay_n and_o he_o fashion_v we_o into_o this_o mould_n he_o who_o be_v that_o even_o god_n he_o that_o have_v say_v 1_o cor._n 2.12_o it_o be_v give_v to_o we_o to_o know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v free_o give_v we_o of_o god_n ask_v a_o believer_n how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v when_o he_o and_o other_o sit_v under_o the_o same_o ministry_n and_o in_o the_o same_o seat_n and_o it_o may_v be_v have_v the_o same_o conviction_n that_o one_o turn_v his_o back_n upon_o god_n and_o the_o other_o come_v in_o that_o one_o hold_v up_o weapon_n of_o rebellion_n against_o god_n and_o the_o other_o lay_v they_o down_o or_o thus_o that_o the_o one_o be_v more_o wrought_v upon_o and_o the_o other_o be_v less_o that_o the_o one_o have_v perfect_a peace_n and_o the_o other_o stand_v dispute_v be_v fill_v with_o fear_n and_o jealousy_n and_o suspicion_n the_o soul_n will_v answer_v that_o it_o be_v not_o for_o any_o thing_n that_o i_o do_v more_o than_o any_o other_o it_o be_v not_o because_o i_o be_v better_a than_o another_o but_o because_o the_o lord_n put_v forth_o his_o power_n upon_o i_o and_o have_v more_o effectual_o call_v and_o wrought_v in_o i_o than_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o do_v upon_o other_o that_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n four_o the_o humbleness_n which_o faith_n work_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v this_o that_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o be_v marvellous_o wary_a and_o faithful_a in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o that_o which_o he_o have_v receive_v by_o believe_v if_o he_o have_v get_v peace_n he_o keep_v it_o wary_o and_o chary_o if_o he_o have_v get_v grace_n he_o maintain_v it_o watchful_o and_o he_o be_v faithful_a not_o because_o he_o do_v not_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o a_o lord_n over_o it_o but_o he_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o gift_n mere_o give_v he_o if_o a_o man_n you_o know_v have_v any_o gift_n give_v he_o by_o a_o friend_n though_o it_o be_v very_o useful_a yet_o he_o be_v very_o chary_a of_o the_o use_n of_o it_o and_o will_v not_o use_v it_o but_o upon_o great_a occasion_n there_o be_v you_o know_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o a_o man_n receive_v his_o life_n by_o grace_n and_o pardon_v from_o the_o prince_n and_o a_o man_n receive_v his_o life_n upon_o term_n of_o justice_n he_o that_o have_v his_o life_n upon_o pardon_n be_v afraid_a if_o he_o ever_o come_v again_o within_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n any_o more_o whereas_o he_o that_o have_v his_o life_n upon_o justice_n think_v not_o of_o any_o such_o danger_n nor_o of_o any_o such_o evil_n that_o he_o need_v to_o beware_v of_o so_o much_o carefulness_n so_o much_o wisdom_n and_o wariness_n as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n to_o use_v what_o it_o have_v receive_v
and_o a_o good_a conscience_n or_o faith_n especial_o 1_o tim._n 1.19_o from_o this_o knowledge_n a_o man_n may_v be_v so_o establish_v in_o the_o profession_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o instruct_v other_o to_o answer_v all_o argument_n that_o shall_v be_v bring_v against_o this_o profession_n and_o to_o endure_v much_o even_o as_o the_o heathen_a philosopher_n that_o will_v rather_o die_v the_o cruel_a death_n than_o leave_v any_o one_o principle_n of_o their_o learning_n and_o profession_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v so_o a_o man_n may_v see_v so_o great_a a_o reason_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v not_o dare_v to_o part_v with_o the_o least_o beam_n of_o it_o for_o the_o great_a affliction_n in_o the_o world_n or_o to_o avoid_v the_o great_a misery_n but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o a_o man_n may_v be_v without_o save_v faith_n it_o may_v be_v thus_o receive_v into_o a_o man_n mind_n and_o judgement_n and_o yet_o not_o be_v a_o faith_n that_o will_v bring_v he_o life_n and_o salvation_n at_o the_o last_o for_o i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v it_o a_o man_n may_v thus_o receive_v jesus_n christ_n by_o a_o common_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n though_o he_o have_v no_o grace_n in_o rom._n 2.20_o the_o apostle_n say_v of_o those_o that_o be_v not_o jew_n in_o the_o circumcision_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o they_o have_v a_o form_n of_o knowledge_n and_o do_v delight_v themselves_o in_o the_o law_n compare_v with_o the_o last_o verse_n and_o if_o you_o look_v into_o rom._n 6.17_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o beside_o the_o form_n of_o doctrine_n unto_o a_o man_n salvation_n there_o be_v require_v his_o be_v deliver_v up_o unto_o it_o but_o say_v he_o you_o have_v obey_v from_o the_o heart_n the_o form_n of_o doctrine_n whereunto_o you_o be_v deliver_v deliver_v that_o be_v cast_v in_o the_o shape_n and_o conform_v unto_o it_o so_o as_o that_o what_o you_o know_v have_v christ_n but_o yet_o he_o say_v they_o be_v such_o as_o he_o do_v not_o dare_v to_o trust_v himself_o with_o al._n that_o be_v they_o will_v have_v betray_v he_o and_o for_o their_o own_o advantage_n will_v have_v put_v he_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o enemy_n 2_o tim._n 3.5_o they_o have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n but_o deny_v the_o power_n thereof_o in_o their_o life_n that_o be_v a_o man_n may_v know_v much_o and_o know_v it_o exact_o and_o yet_o the_o thing_n know_v have_v no_o power_n to_o order_v their_o affection_n or_o to_o subdue_v their_o corruption_n or_o as_o some_o do_v understand_v the_o power_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o form_n they_o do_v not_o value_v the_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o all_o their_o esteem_n reach_v no_o further_a than_o the_o order_n and_o rank_n that_o these_o thing_n bear_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o world_n as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n in_o cast_v up_o a_o account_n may_v value_v a_o counter_a a_o pound_n or_o a_o thousand_o pound_n only_o because_o it_o be_v so_o in_o reckon_n so_o a_o man_n may_v value_v jesus_n christ_n at_o a_o great_a reckon_n as_o one_o that_o contain_v all_o the_o doctrine_n that_o belong_v unto_o salvation_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o unto_o a_o man_n self_n christ_n may_v be_v but_o a_o brass_n counter_a and_o as_o one_o that_o have_v no_o value_n in_o himself_o that_o be_v all_o i_o shall_v leave_v concern_v this_o point_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v receive_v only_o into_o the_o fancy_n when_o a_o man_n know_v not_o christ_n in_o himself_o but_o his_o apprehension_n be_v form_v only_o into_o the_o metaphor_n and_o figurative_a speech_n in_o the_o scripture_n of_o he_o and_o when_o they_o know_v he_o only_o as_o he_o be_v the_o main_a point_n of_o doctrine_n in_o religion_n but_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o take_v with_o himself_o there_o be_v some_o who_o go_v yet_o further_o and_o they_o be_v such_o who_o take_v jesus_n christ_n into_o their_o understanding_n but_o it_o be_v into_o the_o reason_a part_n of_o they_o as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v that_o be_v so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v convince_v by_o demonstration_n and_o evidence_n and_o undeniable_a
