his_o first_o creation_n the_o issue_n whereof_o shall_v still_o be_v continue_v even_o apprehension_n of_o a_o excellent_a soul_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o sink_v into_o the_o baseness_n of_o counterpane_n of_o the_o deity_n although_o not_o equal_a in_o degree_n yet_o like_a in_o resemblance_n now_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o soul_n can_v find_v that_o a_o creator_n create_v thing_n for_o himself_o &_o by_o who_o thing_n be_v they_o be_v also_o for_o he_o therefore_o man_n have_v his_o be_v from_o god_n he_o be_v to_o return_v his_o be_v unto_o god_n and_o if_o man_n will_v know_v the_o manner_n how_o to_o please_v and_o serve_v god_n this_o very_a manner_n of_o his_o creation_n will_v teach_v he_o for_o the_o creator_n be_v a_o spirit_n himself_o and_o he_o give_v to_o man_n a_o spirit_n resemble_v he_o both_o in_o substance_n and_o faculty_n the_o substance_n be_v spiritual_a &_o the_o faculty_n a_o understanding_n and_o wil._n in_o the_o understanding_n be_v a_o light_n which_o can_v show_v unto_o man_n the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o inform_v man_n what_o be_v right_a in_o god_n understanding_n so_o be_v it_o a_o create_a revelation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n the_o spark_n and_o piece_n whereof_o serve_v at_o this_o day_n both_o to_o inform_v and_o accuse_v the_o natural_a man_n now_o upon_o the_o understanding_n thus_o inform_v the_o will_n be_v ready_a to_o attend_v and_o upon_o the_o will_n the_o affection_n yea_o all_o the_o member_n to_o execute_v and_o perform_v the_o will_n of_o god_n certify_v to_o they_o by_o the_o understanding_n now_o there_o be_v such_o a_o aptness_n and_o ability_n of_o conformity_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o all_o thing_n be_v delight_v with_o harmony_n and_o conformity_n especial_o that_o pure_a essence_n which_o be_v vanity_n itself_o sure_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v but_o the_o chief_a pleasure_n and_o service_n most_o acceptable_a to_o the_o creator_n be_v when_o these_o low_a and_o lesser_a spirit_n do_v carry_v themselves_o &_o the_o body_n which_o they_o rule_v in_o a_o perpetual_a consent_n and_o conformity_n to_o that_o great_a spirit_n which_o make_v they_o and_o as_o man_n workmanship_n do_v thus_o show_v he_o his_o work_n so_o do_v it_o also_o his_o happiness_n towards_o the_o discovery_n hereof_o let_v we_o set_v down_o these_o rule_n first_o the_o most_o excellent_a rest_v the_o seven_o day_n for_o any_o weariness_n get_v by_o creation_n but_o these_o thing_n be_v of_o a_o high_a meaning_n and_o include_v doctrine_n more_o excellent_a and_o so_o more_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o dignity_n of_o god_n god_n choose_v to_o make_v his_o work_n distinct_o in_o six_o several_a day_n and_o in_o every_o day_n distinct_o consider_v the_o work_n which_o that_o day_n he_o have_v make_v and_o upon_o this_o distinct_a and_o several_a consideration_n he_o pronounce_v this_o sentence_n upon_o each_o day_n work_n that_o the_o work_n of_o that_o day_n be_v good_a yet_o he_o say_v only_o that_o it_o be_v good_a he_o say_v not_o that_o it_o be_v goodness_n it_o be_v good_a enough_o in_o his_o kind_n for_o service_n but_o not_o for_o happiness_n but_o the_o seven_o day_n he_o cease_v both_o from_o creation_n and_o this_o consideration_n of_o the_o good_a creature_n and_o withdraweth_a himself_o into_o himself_o he_o return_v from_o without_o to_o the_o enjoy_n of_o himself_o &_o his_o own_o rest_n and_o to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o this_o rest_n enjoy_v and_o there_o only_o he_o find_v &_o pronounce_v to_o be_v perfect_a holiness_n and_o perfect_a blessedness_n to_o make_v this_o know_v unto_o man_n god_n take_v this_o seven_o day_n wherein_o he_o retire_v to_o his_o rest_n and_o imprint_n on_o it_o the_o quality_n of_o his_o rest_n holiness_n and_o blessedness_n that_o the_o holiness_n and_o blessedness_n of_o that_o day_n may_v be_v a_o pattern_n to_o we_o of_o the_o holiness_n and_o blessedness_n which_o be_v in_o god_n that_o we_o read_v therein_o the_o blessedness_n of_o god_n may_v set_v our_o whole_a heart_n &_o desire_n thereon_o and_o read_v therein_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n may_v fit_v ourselves_o by_o holiness_n to_o his_o holiness_n which_o as_o it_o be_v inseparable_a from_o happiness_n in_o god_n so_o must_v it_o be_v also_o in_o all_o that_o will_v see_v good_a for_o nothing_o contrary_a or_o unlike_a to_o god_n may_v approach_v unto_o he_o thus_o the_o seven_o day_n crown_v by_o the_o employment_n of_o that_o day_n &_o the_o other_o six_o day_n leave_v unblessed_a by_o the_o work_n of_o those_o day_n by_o a_o manifest_a difference_n point_n unto_o we_o that_o the_o end_n and_o happiness_n of_o man_n be_v not_o to_o be_v seek_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o six_o day_n but_o in_o the_o bless_a holiness_n and_o holy_a blessedness_n of_o the_o seven_o and_o to_o the_o same_o truth_n the_o order_n of_o creation_n do_v likewise_o invite_v us._n for_o all_o creature_n be_v first_o make_v man_n be_v make_v after_o creature_n and_o so_o set_v before_o they_o as_o their_o end_n to_o who_o they_o shall_v look_v &_o who_o they_o shall_v serve_v but_o man_n be_v thus_o place_v as_o the_o end_n of_o the_o creature_n in_o this_o great_a mystery_n of_o the_o sabbath_n solemnize_v after_o man_n creation_n god_n and_o his_o bless_a rest_n be_v set_v before_o man_n as_o the_o end_n and_o happiness_n of_o man._n so_o as_o man_n be_v set_v before_o the_o face_n of_o the_o creature_n so_o be_v god_n in_o the_o sabbath_n set_v before_o the_o face_n of_o man._n the_o creature_n shall_v look_v to_o man_n and_o man_n
man_n god_n let_v it_o alone_o and_o suffer_v it_o to_o run_v on_o in_o the_o course_n of_o misery_n purpose_v to_o blot_v it_o out_o whole_o by_o a_o last_o fire_n and_o reserve_v perfection_n for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v another_o that_o the_o wretchedness_n of_o man_n fall_v be_v continual_o feel_v may_v be_v a_o continual_a document_n and_o reacher_n of_o the_o weakness_n of_o man_n without_o god_n of_o the_o odiousness_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o the_o point_v of_o a_o finger_n to_o turn_v our_o eye_n from_o this_o wretched_a world_n to_o the_o happiness_n which_o be_v above_o for_o present_a grief_n be_v a_o sharp_a spur_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n &_o provoke_v he_o to_o run_v hasty_o from_o these_o remnant_n of_o misery_n unto_o perfect_a felicity_n again_o misery_n sweeten_v joy_n and_o the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o life_n shall_v like_o a_o dark_a veil_n give_v a_o lustre_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o next_o as_o for_o the_o strong_a remnant_n of_o corruption_n and_o the_o small_a portion_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v the_o second_o question_n we_o must_v know_v that_o both_o by_o it_o and_o by_o the_o remnant_n of_o misery_n god_n be_v mighty_o glorify_v and_o man_n glory_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n great_o increase_v for_o god_n glory_n must_v needs_o be_v great_a when_o by_o a_o little_a seed_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o manage_v steer_v and_o guide_v man_n through_o a_o mass_n of_o corruption_n and_o a_o throng_n of_o outward_a evil_n into_o a_o port_n of_o blessedness_n the_o lesser_a the_o mean_n and_o the_o great_a the_o opposition_n the_o more_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o he_o who_o by_o little_a mean_n do_v overcome_v a_o great_a opposition_n yea_o it_o be_v great_a glory_n to_o god_n to_o turn_v evil_n into_o good_a by_o overmastering_a they_o then_o whole_o to_o take_v they_o away_o and_o for_o our_o part_n our_o glory_n shall_v be_v increase_v because_o we_o have_v serve_v god_n glory_n in_o a_o bitter_a conflict_n and_o a_o difficult_a combat_n the_o more_o be_v the_o present_a labour_n the_o more_o shall_v be_v the_o future_a joy_n the_o hardness_n of_o the_o victory_n shall_v increase_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o triumph_n and_o opposition_n itself_o shall_v become_v our_o advancement_n according_o the_o great_a seeker_n which_o common_o be_v the_o great_a finder_n of_o happiness_n be_v usual_o place_v in_o the_o forefront_n of_o the_o battle_n against_o the_o thick_a press_n of_o remain_v evil_n and_o the_o push_n of_o most_o fierce_a and_o fiery_a temptation_n and_o sure_o while_o they_o suffer_v present_a evil_n for_o future_a glory_n while_o they_o fight_v fearful_a conflict_n against_o remain_a corruption_n and_o the_o king_n thereof_o that_o they_o may_v not_o impair_v their_o future_a joy_n as_o thereby_o they_o preserve_v and_o increase_v these_o joy_n so_o be_v they_o herald_n and_o proclaymer_n of_o the_o exceed_a happiness_n of_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o witness_n of_o god_n to_o the_o world_n that_o this_o world_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o the_o next_o and_o that_o neither_o the_o misery_n nor_o felicity_n of_o it_o be_v any_o way_n equal_a to_o that_o transcendent_a joy_n which_o be_v to_o come_v final_o when_o corruption_n over-master_n we_o the_o sufficience_n of_o god_n grace_n do_v relieve_v we_o forgiveness_n supply_v or_o cover_v the_o defect_n of_o infirmity_n but_o yet_o man_n be_v not_o quiet_a he_o be_v not_o in_o good_a like_n with_o this_o kind_n of_o happiness_n for_o he_o complain_v it_o be_v thin_a and_o airy_a and_o his_o fleshly_a palate_n have_v more_o savour_n in_o the_o taste_n of_o flesh_n then_o in_o the_o taste_n of_o a_o spiritual_a happiness_n again_o he_o say_v it_o be_v long_o in_o come_v and_o a_o man_n may_v be_v weary_a with_o look_v for_o it_o before_o it_o come_v to_o the_o first_o i_o grant_v indeed_o that_o the_o fleshly_a taste_n relish_v not_o spiritual_a joy_n but_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o therefore_o the_o worse_a but_o the_o better_a for_o the_o grossness_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o purity_n of_o the_o other_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o dislike_n so_o do_v the_o stomach_n of_o the_o country_n swain_n despise_v the_o delicate_a and_o nice_a diet_n of_o the_o fine_a dame_n not_o that_o he_o can_v find_v any_o ill_n in_o it_o but_o because_o it_o be_v too_o slight_a to_o satisfy_v his_o gross_a and_o mighty_a appetite_n this_o be_v true_o pattern_v in_o the_o israelite_n who_o strong_a stomach_n desire_v the_o onion_n and_o melon_n of_o egypt_n but_o loathe_v the_o pure_a and_o excellent_a bread_n of_o heaven_n therefore_o this_o must_v be_v the_o rule_n in_o this_o matter_n every_o appetite_n please_v itself_o most_o in_o a_o object_n fit_v &_o proportionable_a to_o itself_o and_o it_o be_v not_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o object_n but_o the_o agreeablenesse_n that_o make_v it_o delightful_a according_a to_o this_o be_v that_o of_o the_o poet_n the_o lioness_n hunt_v the_o wolf_n the_o wolf_n seek_v the_o kid_n and_o the_o kid_n delight_v in_o the_o green_a grass_n wherefore_o i_o expect_v not_o that_o gross_a flesh_n shall_v find_v extraordinary_a comfort_n in_o a_o most_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a glory_n but_o a_o spiritual_a man_n only_o relish_v spiritual_a thing_n because_o they_o be_v only_o agreeable_a to_o such_o a_o man_n according_o as_o far_o as_o a_o man_n be_v spiritual_a so_o far_o take_v he_o comfort_v in_o a_o spiritual_a happiness_n which_o indeed_o be_v here_o but_o in_o part_n so_o that_o we_o do_v but_o look_v as_o through_o some_o cranny_n into_o the_o glory_n of_o heaven_n and_o we_o do_v love_v this_o glory_n but_o with_o a_o part_n of_o our_o affection_n yet_o in_o some_o saint_n have_v it_o be_v so_o fervent_a that_o they_o have_v send_v challenge_n to_o death_n in_o strong_a desire_n to_o be_v dissolve_v and_o will_v have_v build_v tabernacle_n in_o this_o spiritual_a blessedness_n but_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o great_a day_n shall_v have_v full_o purge_v our_o soul_n and_o body_n with_o that_o divine_a fire_n and_o refine_v our_o grossness_n corruption_n and_o dross_n then_o to_o we_o make_v full_o spiritual_a shall_v the_o most_o high_a &_o sovereign_a spirit_n be_v the_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_a for_o man_n be_v make_v spiritual_a shall_v delight_v in_o spirit_n &_o chief_o in_o the_o chief_a and_o then_o these_o gross_a pleasure_n desire_v now_o by_o gross_a lust_n shall_v be_v loathsome_a and_o contemptible_a as_o too_o base_a for_o so_o pure_a &_o divine_a essence_n wherefore_o if_o we_o will_v take_v pleasure_n in_o thing_n of_o excellence_n we_o must_v strive_v to_o raise_v ourselves_o to_o their_o excellent_a degree_n we_o must_v lift_v ourselves_o up_o to_o a_o nature_n proportionable_a unto_o they_o and_o by_o such_o a_o indenour_n we_o shall_v purchase_v a_o high_a station_n and_o a_o high_a happiness_n whereas_o otherwise_o we_o lie_v down_o base_o in_o our_o own_o dregs_n &_o complain_v like_o owl_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o sun_n when_o the_o fault_n be_v in_o our_o own_o eye_n wherefore_o let_v this_o be_v the_o most_o commendable_a ambition_n of_o a_o truly-noble_a and_o generous_a spirit_n to_o advance_v his_o mind_n to_o a_o purity_n and_o excellence_n proportionable_a to_o a_o supereminent_a object_n and_o happiness_n and_o be_v it_o repute_v the_o quality_n of_o a_o base_a worthless_a and_o muddy_a thing_n to_o bring_v down_o happiness_n to_o his_o low_a grovel_v and_o gross_a desire_n and_o when_o he_o can_v do_v so_o to_o accuse_v it_o to_o the_o second_o who_o be_v trouble_v so_o much_o with_o the_o delay_n of_o payment_n and_o the_o defer_v of_o happiness_n for_o a_o answer_n i_o will_v ask_v he_o how_o long_o he_o will_v willing_o stay_v to_o be_v heir_n of_o a_o crown_n here_o if_o i_o may_v speak_v for_o he_o i_o think_v he_o will_v confess_v that_o he_o will_v be_v content_v if_o he_o may_v have_v it_o but_o seven_o year_n before_o his_o death_n now_o i_o will_v desire_v he_o to_o stay_v but_o seven_o year_n more_o and_o then_o he_o shall_v have_v this_o crown_n that_o far_o excel_v the_o other_o and_o to_o comfort_v he_o in_o this_o odds_n of_o expectation_n i_o can_v tell_v he_o that_o those_o who_o have_v know_v and_o now_o wear_v both_o these_o crown_n have_v make_v a_o far_o great_a odds_n between_o they_o than_o a_o few_o year_n patience_n prefer_v a_o day_n in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n before_o a_o thousand_o in_o the_o court_n of_o prince_n but_o that_o we_o may_v come_v low_a do_v not_o we_o see_v it_o a_o ordinary_a thing_n that_o a_o man_n continue_v thirty_o year_n in_o a_o course_n of_o but_o god_n but_o will_v and_o desire_v he_o as_o the_o only_a felicity_n when_o the_o will_n towards_o the_o attainment_n of_o this_o felicity_n depend_v trust_v and_o lean_v on_o no_o other_o mean_n be_v a_o immediate_a father_n of_o man_n reparation_n as_o of_o his_o creation_n of_o grace_n as_o of_o nature_n yet_o contain_v this_o doctrine_n no_o unreasonable_a contrariety_n or_o repugnance_n but_o only_a thing_n high_a above_o common_a reason_n such_o as_o well_o befit_v a_o deity_n high_a by_o far_a then_o his_o own_o creature_n and_o notwithstanding_o this_o height_n yet_o they_o that_o due_o converse_v in_o this_o doctrine_n and_o by_o meditation_n enter_v into_o the_o mystery_n thereof_o they_o i_o say_v shall_v find_v a_o excellent_a harmony_n &_o correspondence_n between_o it_o and_o man_n present_a estate_n and_o between_o all_o the_o part_n of_o itself_o for_o the_o sore_a of_o man_n be_v so_o just_o cover_v with_o a_o answerable_a plaster_n that_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v confess_v that_o he_o who_o frame_v the_o remedy_n must_v be_v he_o alone_o that_o know_v the_o secret_n of_o the_o heart_n even_o the_o depth_n and_o root_n of_o our_o malady_n philosophy_n have_v endeavour_v to_o cure_v the_o gangrene_n of_o man_n corruption_n by_o cut_v off_o the_o very_a part_n corrupt_v which_o must_v be_v upon_o the_o matter_n by_o cut_v off_o man_n from_o himself_o as_o indeed_o some_o have_v do_v by_o leave_v he_o as_o a_o mere_a trunk_n without_o feeling_n and_o without_o affection_n but_o this_o doctrine_n leave_v the_o part_n whole_a but_o main_o oppose_v the_o corruption_n it_o leave_v man_n to_o be_v as_o much_o a_o man_n as_o he_o be_v but_o only_o it_o so_o purge_v he_o that_o he_o be_v not_o so_o much_o evil_a nor_o so_o much_o miserable_a as_o he_o be_v yea_o that_o at_o length_n he_o shall_v be_v neither_o evil_a nor_o miserable_a and_o this_o be_v so_o strong_o seal_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n that_o it_o leave_v a_o evident_a proof_n of_o a_o divine_a power_n accompany_v and_o justify_v it_o for_o none_o but_o the_o creator_n can_v pierce_v into_o the_o hart_n of_o man_n and_o bind_v his_o will_n and_o affection_n even_o against_o his_o will_n and_o affection_n with_o such_o powerful_a and_o mighty_a chain_n that_o neither_o the_o
wit_n of_o man_n which_o have_v be_v fruitful_a in_o invention_n of_o torment_n nor_o the_o power_n of_o emperor_n which_o have_v ruin_v mighty_a kingdom_n can_v change_v or_o alter_v they_o concern_v this_o art_n of_o art_n what_o i_o have_v receive_v i_o purpose_v to_o deliver_v to_o other_o through_o his_o help_n who_o be_v the_o author_n thereof_o and_o sure_o this_o knowledge_n be_v only_o worthy_a of_o a_o man_n other_o knowledge_n except_o they_o serve_v this_o they_o be_v but_o weariness_n and_o vanity_n for_o man_n be_v as_o miserable_a and_o sometime_o more_o when_o he_o have_v get_v their_o perfection_n as_o when_o he_o enter_v into_o their_o beginning_n and_o becauseit_n give_v a_o great_a light_n to_o man_n reparation_n to_o know_v how_o he_o come_v to_o have_v need_n of_o it_o and_o because_o it_o concern_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o creator_n to_o show_v that_o at_o first_o he_o create_v not_o misery_n and_o corruption_n therefore_o most_o fit_o do_v this_o doctrine_n begin_v with_o the_o first_o estate_n of_o man_n and_o the_o loss_n thereof_o even_o a_o create_a perfection_n and_o a_o purchase_a corruption_n a_o learning_n which_o all_o philosophy_n can_v never_o reach_v for_o she_o be_v the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o can_v tell_v the_o beginning_n of_o her_o own_o father_n for_o man_n be_v before_o she_o be_v yea_o man_n be_v lose_v before_o she_o be_v find_v and_o so_o she_o which_o be_v since_o corruption_n can_v tell_v how_o that_o corruption_n come_v which_o be_v before_o she_o much_o less_o can_v she_o speak_v of_o that_o perfection_n which_o be_v again_o before_o this_o corruption_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v bid_v she_o find_v we_o and_o not_o know_v the_o cause_n she_o can_v never_o find_v the_o cure_n and_o therefore_o as_o she_o find_v we_o so_o she_o leave_v we_o miserable_a the_o art_n of_o happiness_n the_o second_o part._n which_o particular_o set_v forth_o the_o happiness_n of_o man_n and_o the_o restore_n of_o it_o when_o it_o be_v lose_v chap._n i._o of_o the_o creator_n and_o the_o creation_n and_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o creator_n in_o the_o creation_n the_o creator_n be_v the_o begin_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o must_v he_o needs_o be_v without_o beginning_n for_o from_o the_o thing_n which_o have_v their_o beginning_n of_o he_o himself_o can_v take_v beginning_n neither_o can_v he_o be_v his_o own_o beginning_n for_o that_o be_v to_o say_v he_o be_v before_o he_o be_v but_o god_n be_v a_o eternal_a essence_n that_o by_o himself_o uphold_v himself_o and_o all_o thing_n else_o for_o all_o other_o thing_n have_v no_o be_v of_o their_o own_o but_o they_o borrow_v their_o be_v from_o he_o and_o in_o he_o be_v their_o foundation_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n may_v he_o alone_o right_o because_o alone_o original_o say_v i_o be_o and_o as_o he_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o beginning_n from_o which_o all_o thing_n flow_v so_o be_v he_o the_o end_n to_o which_o all_o thing_n return_v either_o by_o their_o own_o will_n conform_v to_o his_o will_n or_o by_o the_o overruling_a of_o his_o power_n which_o subdue_v the_o unwilling_a to_o his_o will_n and_o thus_o must_v it_o needs_o be_v for_o the_o creator_n be_v his_o own_o end_n in_o his_o creation_n and_o do_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o if_o we_o allow_v not_o a_o creator_n we_o confess_v no_o author_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o see_v but_o either_o we_o make_v they_o eternal_a which_o be_v to_o make_v mean_a god_n and_o to_o deny_v the_o more_o excellent_a or_o we_o frame_v some_o imagination_n of_o our_o own_o to_o be_v their_o beginning_n which_o shall_v never_o fit_v with_o they_o so_o well_o as_o a_o wise_a powerful_a and_o eternal_a spirit_n and_o last_o we_o rob_v man_n soul_n of_o a_o true_a rest_n &_o happiness_n for_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n have_v not_o some_o sovereign_a spirit_n to_o give_v it_o eternal_a bliss_n than_o be_v miserable_a man_n shut_v up_o unto_o this_o present_a life_n as_o unto_o his_o sovereign_a good_a into_o which_o a_o wise_a &_o good_a man_n will_v never_o re-enter_v if_o he_o be_v once_o well_o discharge_v of_o it_o let_v we_o then_o seek_v a_o god_n high_a than_o these_o visible_a thing_n and_o a_o happiness_n high_o than_o these_o miserable_a thing_n and_o let_v we_o not_o reason_n with_o the_o brutish_a sensualist_n he_o be_v not_o a_o god_n who_o we_o can_v see_v with_o our_o eye_n but_o let_v we_o say_v with_o the_o soul_n enlighten_v he_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v a_o god_n who_o pureness_n do_v excel_v the_o gross_a capacity_n of_o bodily_a sense_n for_o the_o pure_a the_o essence_n be_v the_o more_o fit_a to_o be_v a_o god_n and_o the_o more_o pure_a the_o more_o invisible_a to_o a_o gross_a and_o carnal_a sight_n let_v we_o therefore_o believe_v the_o creator_n to_o be_v a_o most_o clear_a lightsome_a and_o glorious_a spirit_n and_o to_o be_v see_v only_o by_o spirit_n and_o body_n sublimate_v into_o a_o spiritual_a kind_n of_o be_v this_o glorious_a &_o eternal_a spirit_n manife_v himself_o to_o our_o apprehension_n in_o three_o person_n the_o print_n and_o impression_n of_o each_o person_n be_v find_v in_o every_o creature_n and_o there_o be_v a_o absolute_a necessity_n that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o three_o shall_v concur_v in_o all_o creation_n the_o first_o in_o order_n of_o consideration_n though_o there_o be_v no_o first_o in_o order_n of_o time_n be_v the_o great_a and_o infinite_a mind_n or_o understanding_n which_o beget_v a_o great_a wisdom_n thought_n or_o word_n even_o the_o first_o and_o radical_a light_n the_o almighty_a begetter_n of_o the_o second_o light_n and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o father_n the_o second_o be_v the_o beget_v &_o second_o light_n even_o the_o wisdom_n &_o conceivement_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n a_o image_n &_o issue_n thereof_o and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o son_n the_o three_o be_v the_o virtue_n &_o power_n which_o breathe_v or_o flow_v from_o the_o god_n head_n whereby_o god_n love_v and_o enjoy_v himself_o and_o put_v in_o execution_n whatsoever_o he_o will_v have_v do_v for_o himself_o and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n these_o three_o be_v one_o god_n and_o do_v so_o necessary_o join_v in_o every_o creation_n that_o without_o any_o one_o of_o they_o nothing_o can_v be_v create_v for_o how_o can_v there_o be_v any_o creation_n but_o that_o the_o mind_n or_o father_n must_v beget_v a_o wise_a purpose_n by_o wisdom_n his_o son_n &_o what_o he_o have_v purpose_v and_o project_v by_o the_o son_n he_o must_v effect_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n according_o this_o god_n who_o be_v the_o end_n of_o himself_o for_o himself_o intend_v and_o bring_v forth_o a_o creation_n to_o himself_o he_o will_v have_v glory_n and_o to_o his_o creature_n happiness_n yea_o this_o happiness_n of_o the_o creature_n shall_v be_v by_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o creator_n so_o in_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n shall_v man_n and_o angel_n be_v glorify_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a they_o that_o will_v not_o give_v glory_n to_o god_n shall_v not_o have_v happiness_n to_o themselves_o yet_o though_o unwilling_o shall_v they_o glorify_v he_o by_o serve_v his_o justice_n in_o misery_n who_o will_v not_o serve_v his_o goodness_n in_o felicity_n to_o effect_v this_o in_o six_o day_n god_n make_v this_o great_a mass_n of_o creature_n call_v the_o world_n which_o he_o fit_v for_o the_o service_n of_o man_n and_o man_n for_o the_o service_n of_o his_o god._n now_o as_o this_o great_a frame_n come_v from_o this_o one_o god_n so_o the_o infinite_a disagreeing_n of_o several_a part_n reconcile_v to_o a_o unity_n point_n to_o some_o great_a unity_n as_o the_o cause_n of_o this_o reconciliation_n which_o can_v deserve_v to_o be_v call_v by_o no_o other_o name_n then_o by_o a_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a name_n and_o such_o a_o name_n be_v god_n again_o the_o infinite_a diversity_n of_o form_n and_o that_o large_a heap_n of_o matter_n neither_o of_o which_o be_v before_o and_o of_o which_o it_o be_v alike_o easy_a to_o the_o creator_n to_o make_v matter_n as_o form_n direct_v our_o eye_n to_o some_o great_a wisdom_n &_o power_n which_o can_v both_o invent_v and_o produce_v they_o yea_o more_fw-it near_o the_o drop_n and_o stream_n of_o wisdom_n pour_v into_o the_o creature_n in_o their_o several_a instinct_n and_o into_o man_n with_o his_o soul_n plain_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v some_o spring_n of_o infinite_a wisdom_n from_o which_o these_o rivulet_n may_v flow_v and_o some_o infinite_a power_n which_o can_v actuate_v they_o into_o the_o creature_n and_o if_o so_o then_o necessary_o must_v we_o also_o allow_v some_o pure_a and_o infinite_a essence_n
creator_n if_o the_o bodily_a sight_n be_v extinguish_v he_o which_o make_v the_o first_o sight_n can_v only_o make_v a_o new_a and_o when_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o far_o put_v out_o that_o it_o see_v not_o he_o that_o make_v it_o he_o that_o make_v it_o only_o can_v give_v it_o a_o new_a sight_n whereby_o himself_o may_v be_v see_v wherefore_o if_o thou_o which_o read_v thus_o far_o yet_o believe_v not_o what_o thou_o read_v i_o wonder_v not_o for_o i_o know_v what_o thou_o be_v i_o look_v not_o that_o blindness_n shall_v see_v or_o carnalitie_n shall_v savour_n spiritual_a joy_n thou_o be_v bound_v with_o thy_o own_o flesh_n which_o be_v thy_o horizon_n &_o limit_n of_o discern_v thy_o candle_n can_v see_v through_o the_o thick_a lantern_n of_o thy_o body_n to_o perceive_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o blessedness_n of_o spirit_n nor_o the_o glory_n that_o be_v above_o the_o veil_n of_o this_o visible_a heaven_n but_o perchance_o thou_o will_v ask_v if_o the_o open_n of_o the_o eye_n be_v from_o god_n alone_o to_o what_o purpose_n shall_v advice_n begve_v to_o thou_o in_o a_o matter_n that_o lie_v not_o in_o thou_o and_o which_o be_v not_o effect_v by_o advice_n but_o by_o supernatural_a operation_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o although_o the_o power_n that_o must_v inlighten_v thou_o do_v descend_v from_o above_o yet_o usual_o it_o do_v communicate_v itself_o unto_o we_o by_o the_o service_n of_o certain_a mean_n leave_v with_o we_o here_o below_o again_o when_o grace_n do_v first_o breathe_v upon_o we_o it_o work_v by_o degree_n which_o degree_n be_v by_o some_o neglect_a or_o misconstrue_v it_o have_v breed_v unto_o they_o a_o great_a difficulty_n &_o hardness_n of_o travail_n in_o the_o new_a birth_n but_o be_v perceive_v and_o due_o entertain_v they_o turn_v into_o testimonial_n unto_o we_o yea_o to_o encouragement_n unto_o far_a degree_n of_o grace_n but_o if_o thou_o ask_v i_o again_o how_o thou_o shall_v like_v or_o use_v the_o mean_n when_o thou_o neither_o see_v nor_o like_v the_o happiness_n intend_v by_o the_o mean_n to_o this_o i_o must_v reply_v that_o without_o god_n thou_o can_v not_o so_o much_o as_o love_v the_o mean_n yet_o as_o a_o natural_a man_n thou_o may_v consider_v these_o thing_n follow_v first_o if_o thou_o look_v into_o the_o best_a sort_n of_o heavenly_a philosopher_n thou_o shall_v see_v among_o they_o man_n wise_a and_o understanding_n just_a &_o righteous_a enjoy_v both_o wealth_n and_o honour_n and_o if_o thou_o talk_v with_o those_o man_n they_o will_v tell_v thou_o serious_o that_o they_o most_o certain_o see_v and_o feel_v a_o estate_n of_o happiness_n and_o that_o they_o come_v to_o the_o sight_n of_o such_o a_o estate_n by_o frequent_v the_o mean_n leave_v with_o we_o here_o on_o earth_n second_o if_o thou_o will_v search_v some_o special_a work_n of_o man_n thou_o shall_v find_v writer_n of_o undeniable_a worthiness_n who_o by_o miracle_n prophecy_n oracle_n success_n and_o victory_n against_o opposition_n have_v prove_v the_o verity_n of_o christian_a learning_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o a_o doctrine_n main_o contrary_a to_o flesh_n &_o blood_n shall_v be_v advance_v so_o much_o among_o man_n who_o very_a frame_n be_v flesh_n &_o blood_n without_o the_o maintenance_n of_o a_o omnipotent_a lord_n three_o do_v but_o consider_v what_o this_o doctrine_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n &_o mean_n of_o life_n propose_v to_o thou_o and_o require_v of_o thou_o it_o propose_v to_o thou_o a_o eternal_a felicity_n it_o require_v of_o thou_o piety_n and_o purity_n thing_n of_o themselves_o desirable_a &_o excellent_a but_o thou_o will_v say_v that_o this_o purity_n will_v cost_v thou_o dear_a for_o it_o be_v sure_a to_o cost_v thou_o all_o thy_o sinful_a pleasure_n and_o may_v cost_v thou_o much_o pain_n yea_o thy_o life_n itself_o but_o to_o this_o i_o may_v answer_v that_o though_o it_o may_v cost_v thou_o something_o yet_o upon_o the_o matter_n it_o lose_v thou_o nothing_o for_o whatsoever_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n thou_o can_v enjoy_v be_v enjoy_v they_o die_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o yea_o life_n itself_o come_v at_o last_o to_o nothing_o &_o that_o for_o nothing_o so_o the_o condition_n require_v of_o thou_o be_v only_o this_o that_o what_o shall_v be_v nothing_o if_o it_o be_v may_v be_v nothing_o by_o not_o be_v and_o to_o encourage_v thou_o herein_o thou_o have_v for_o advantage_n a_o adventure_n for_o eternity_n in_o sum_n thou_o be_v require_v at_o the_o most_o but_o to_o lose_v that_o which_o will_v be_v lose_v for_o a_o happiness_n which_o may_v and_o shall_v be_v find_v for_o ever_o yea_o for_o these_o gross_a pleasure_n even_o in_o this_o life_n thou_o shall_v have_v joy_n unspeakable_a howsoever_o whether_o thou_o receive_v the_o mean_n of_o happiness_n or_o refuse_v it_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o to_o all_o those_o that_o receive_v the_o life_n of_o blessedness_n the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n leave_v unto_o we_o in_o writing_n and_o unfold_v by_o his_o servant_n proper_o depute_v to_o this_o office_n be_v the_o usual_a conveyance_n of_o this_o life_n god_n alone_o invent_v and_o conceive_v the_o remedy_n of_o man_n misery_n and_o a_o way_n from_o misery_n unto_o felicity_n the_o same_o god_n who_o only_o know_v it_o can_v only_o tell_v it_o and_o only_o by_o tell_v can_v man_n know_v and_o believe_v it_o and_o only_o by_o know_v and_o believe_v can_v man_n strive_v towards_o it_o and_o so_o final_o attain_v it_o so_o we_o see_v that_o man_n must_v know_v and_o believe_v happiness_n to_o obtain_v it_o and_o happiness_n must_v be_v teach_v if_o they_o will_v know_v &_o believe_v it_o and_o to_o teach_v this_o happiness_n there_o need_v a_o word_n of_o revelation_n and_o to_o reveile_v this_o god_n himself_o must_v speak_v unto_o we_o who_o alone_o be_v the_o founder_n and_o knower_n of_o this_o mystery_n therefore_o must_v we_o esteem_v this_o word_n high_o as_o a_o great_a second_o mercy_n by_o which_o the_o first_o great_a mercy_n be_v the_o liver_v to_o us._n before_o this_o doctrine_n our_o happiness_n be_v lock_v up_o in_o god_n unsearchable_a purpose_n but_o by_o this_o doctrine_n happiness_n be_v reach_v out_o to_o we_o and_o issue_v from_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o man._n wherefore_o let_v we_o be_v far_o from_o account_v it_o a_o vain_a word_n for_o it_o be_v our_o life_n and_o the_o length_n of_o our_o day_n and_o by_o it_o we_o receive_v eternal_a life_n from_o the_o ancient_n of_o day_n for_o while_o it_o be_v teach_v unto_o we_o without_o the_o virtue_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n enter_v into_o we_o within_o and_o make_v we_o capable_a of_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v teach_v unto_o us._n now_o the_o degree_n by_o which_o this_o spirit_n usual_o work_v upon_o we_o be_v these_o first_o it_o cause_v we_o somewhat_o to_o discern_v &_o allow_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o word_n and_o next_o it_o move_v a_o desire_n of_o more_o knowledge_n and_o of_o a_o great_a taste_n of_o the_o word_n of_o life_n which_o be_v also_o make_v know_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o at_o length_n the_o heart_n be_v move_v with_o so_o servant_n a_o love_n unto_o it_o that_o it_o desire_v to_o be_v whole_o savour_v salt_v and_o season_v therewith_o that_o the_o natural_a man_n may_v no_o long_o live_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o that_o christ_n kingdom_n may_v be_v set_v up_o therein_o and_o so_o the_o word_n or_o christ_n in_o and_o by_o the_o word_n become_v the_o treasure_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o therefore_o from_o thenceforth_o the_o heart_n be_v ever_o think_v on_o his_o treasure_n it_o thirst_v after_o it_o it_o seek_v it_o with_o eye_n and_o ear_n but_o that_o thou_o may_v not_o be_v discourage_v in_o thy_o first_o beginning_n thou_o must_v also_o know_v in_o what_o manner_n and_o order_n the_o doctrine_n and_o art_n of_o felicity_n do_v present_v it_o self_n unto_o thou_o it_o will_v first_o offer_v to_o thy_o knowledge_n and_o meditation_n the_o lamentable_a face_n of_o humane_a misery_n so_o that_o thy_o flesh_n perchance_o will_v fear_v to_o go_v on_o half_o despair_v how_o thou_o can_v ever_o come_v through_o so_o great_a misery_n unto_o felicity_n but_o fear_v not_o the_o beginning_n and_o the_o end_n be_v contrary_a thy_o natural_a estate_n be_v indeed_o very_o miserable_a and_o this_o doctrine_n do_v not_o make_v it_o to_o be_v so_o but_o show_v it_o to_o be_v so_o the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n make_v thou_o miserable_a and_o hide_v thy_o misery_n from_o thou_o and_o so_o make_v thou_o content_o to_o continue_v in_o misery_n but_o this_o doctrine_n show_v thou_o thy_o misery_n that_o by_o show_v it_o it_o may_v cure_v it_o it_o show_v thou_o indeed_o the_o ugly_a face_n of_o thy_o
thing_n must_v be_v consider_v first_o the_o presentnesse_n of_o the_o evil_a for_o our_o flesh_n be_v like_a gunpowder_n it_o present_o take_v fire_n it_o break_v out_o sudden_o upon_o we_o &_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o be_v before_o it_o but_o by_o watchfulness_n for_o when_o a_o man_n meet_v a_o occasion_n of_o anger_n of_o lust_n or_o of_o some_o other_o passion_n if_o he_o be_v out_o of_o his_o watch_n his_o house_n be_v by_o temptation_n set_v on_o fire_n about_o his_o ear_n before_o he_o see_v that_o he_o be_v tempt_v but_o the_o watchful_a man_n be_v still_o in_o his_o spirit_n and_o so_o be_v still_o before_o the_o temptation_n yea_o the_o temptation_n come_v still_o before_o he_o and_o not_o behind_o he_o even_o in_o his_o sight_n and_o under_o his_o view_n therefore_o he_o forewarn_v his_o own_o soul_n and_o so_o forewarn_v she_o to_o prevent_v the_o harm_n which_o approach_v towards_o she_o watchfulness_n tell_v the_o soul_n here_o come_v a_o temptation_n of_o wrath_n there_o a_o temptation_n of_o covetousness_n and_o another_o way_n a_o temptation_n of_o lust_n and_o then_o the_o soul_n know_v her_o business_n which_o be_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n
