enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n but_o he_o that_o do_v the_o will_n of_o my_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n matth._n seven_o 21._o that_o be_v not_o every_o one_o that_o profess_v may_v as_o well_o lay_v claim_v to_o heaven_n because_o we_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o sleep_v as_o because_o we_o pray_v and_o hear_v and_o receive_v sacrament_n for_o though_o these_o bodily_a exercise_n be_v profitable_a mean_n to_o entitle_v we_o to_o heaven_n yet_o it_o be_v only_o upon_o this_o account_n because_o they_o be_v mean_n to_o make_v we_o good_a but_o if_o they_o do_v not_o effect_v this_o they_o be_v all_o but_o so_o many_o insignificant_a cipher_n he_o therefore_o that_o build_v his_o hope_n of_o heaven_n mere_o upon_o bodily_a religion_n build_v upon_o a_o sandy_a foundation_n which_o if_o he_o final_o trust_v to_o will_v sink_v under_o he_o and_o bury_v he_o in_o eternal_a ruin_n 4._o and_o last_o bodily_a exercise_n profit_v but_o little_a in_o comparison_n with_o godliness_n as_o to_o the_o qualify_a we_o for_o heaven_n which_o be_v a_o distinct_a consideration_n from_o the_o former_a for_o suppose_v we_o can_v have_v a_o right_n to_o heaven_n without_o be_v dispose_v and_o qualify_v for_o it_o it_o will_v be_v no_o advantage_n at_o all_o to_o we_o for_o before_o we_o can_v enjoy_v heaven_n our_o mind_n must_v be_v reconcile_v to_o the_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n of_o it_o or_o else_o it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v be_v pleasure_n to_o we_o now_o in_o the_o temper_n of_o every_o wicked_a mind_n there_o be_v a_o natural_a antipathy_n unto_o all_o those_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a joy_n wherewith_o the_o heavenly_a state_n abound_v which_o be_v pure_a and_o chaste_a and_o refine_a can_v never_o agree_v with_o the_o vitiate_a palate_n of_o a_o base_a degenerate_a soul_n for_o what_o concord_n can_v there_o be_v between_o spiteful_a and_o devilish_a spirit_n and_o the_o fountain_n of_o all_o love_n and_o goodness_n between_o sensual_a and_o carnalize_v soul_n that_o understand_v no_o other_o pleasure_n but_o only_o those_o of_o the_o flesh_n and_o those_o pure_a and_o virgin_n spirit_n that_o never_o eat_v nor_o drink_v but_o live_v for_o ever_o upon_o wisdom_n and_o holiness_n and_o love_n and_o contemplation_n how_o can_v i_o be_v happy_a in_o see_v that_o god_n who_o i_o can_v love_v in_o converse_v with_o those_o spirit_n who_o genius_n and_o temper_n i_o abhor_v and_o in_o be_v for_o ever_o employ_v in_o those_o heavenly_a exercise_n to_o which_o i_o have_v the_o great_a aversation_n no_o no_o till_o i_o be_o of_o the_o same_o disposition_n with_o those_o celestial_a inhabitant_n and_o my_o mind_n be_v contemper_v to_o the_o heavenly_a state_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o heaven_n and_o i_o shall_v ever_o agree_v and_o i_o may_v as_o well_o see_v without_o eye_n or_o hear_v without_o ear_n as_o enjoy_v heaven_n without_o a_o heavenly_a disposition_n for_o as_o to_o the_o main_a we_o shall_v be_v of_o the_o same_o temper_n of_o mind_n when_o we_o come_v into_o the_o other_o world_n as_o we_o be_v of_o while_o we_o continue_v in_o this_o it_o be_v unimaginable_a how_o our_o disposition_n shall_v be_v total_o change_v mere_o by_o pass_v out_o of_o one_o world_n into_o another_o and_o therefore_o as_o in_o this_o world_n it_o be_v likeness_n that_o do_v congregate_v and_o associate_v being_n together_o so_o doubtless_o it_o be_v in_o the_o other_o too_o so_o that_o if_o we_o carry_v thither_o with_o we_o our_o wicked_a devilish_a disposition_n as_o we_o shall_v doubtless_o do_v unless_o we_o subdue_v and_o mortify_v they_o here_o there_o will_v be_v no_o company_n fit_a for_o we_o to_o asscciate_v with_o but_o only_o the_o devil_n and_o damn_a ghost_n of_o wicked_a man_n with_o who_o our_o wretched_a spirit_n be_v already_o join_v by_o a_o likeness_n of_o nature_n will_v be_v force_v to_o congregate_v as_o soon_o as_o ever_o they_o be_v excommunicate_v from_o the_o society_n of_o mortal_n for_o whither_o shall_v they_o flock_v but_o to_o the_o bird_n of_o their_o own_o feather_n where_o shall_v they_o join_v society_n but_o with_o those_o malignant_a spirit_n to_o who_o they_o be_v join_v already_o by_o a_o community_n of_o nature_n for_o suppose_v that_o when_o they_o be_v land_v in_o eternity_n it_o be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o liberty_n to_o go_v either_o to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n yet_o heaven_n will_v be_v no_o place_n for_o they_o the_o air_n of_o that_o bright_a empire_n of_o eternal_a day_n will_v never_o agree_v with_o their_o black_a and_o hellish_a nature_n for_o alas_o what_o shall_v they_o do_v among_o those_o bless_a soul_n that_o inhabit_v it_o to_o who_o godlike_a nature_n divine_a conversation_n and_o heavenly_a employment_n they_o have_v the_o great_a repugnancy_n and_o aversation_n from_o hence_o therefore_o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o to_o our_o comfortable_a possession_n of_o heaven_n it_o be_v not_o only_o necessary_a we_o shall_v have_v a_o right_a to_o it_o but_o also_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v prepare_v and_o qualify_v for_o it_o and_o as_o to_o this_o all_o our_o bodily_a exercise_n in_o religion_n be_v no_o far_o profitable_a than_o as_o they_o be_v effectual_a mean_n of_o true_a substantial_a godliness_n for_o when_o the_o soul_n go_v out_o of_o this_o body_n
it_o must_v leave_v all_o this_o bodily_a religion_n behind_o it_o and_o carry_v nothing_o with_o it_o into_o eternity_n but_o only_o those_o divine_a virtue_n and_o heavenly_a disposition_n which_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o bodily_a religion_n it_o do_v here_o acquire_v for_o our_o outward_a profession_n and_o bodily_a severity_n and_o passion_n our_o pray_v and_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o sacrament_n be_v all_o but_o scaffold_n to_o this_o heavenly_a building_n of_o inward_a purity_n and_o goodness_n and_o when_o once_o this_o be_v finish_v for_o eternity_n then_o must_v these_o scaffold_n go_v down_o as_o thing_n of_o no_o far_o use_v or_o necessity_n but_o as_o for_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o mind_n they_o shall_v stand_v for_o ever_o as_o the_o only_a fit_a habitation_n of_o the_o heavenly_a pleasure_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o these_o our_o bodily_a exercise_n shall_v formal_o dispose_v our_o soul_n for_o heaven_n since_o in_o heaven_n they_o shall_v whole_o cease_v for_o although_o our_o love_n and_o joy_n and_o all_o our_o sweet_a affection_n shall_v there_o be_v keep_v in_o everlasting_a exercise_n yet_o shall_v they_o be_v whole_o refine_v from_o all_o bodily_a passion_n because_o there_o we_o shall_v be_v strip_v into_o naked_a and_o unbodied_a spirit_n our_o love_n shall_v unite_v our_o will_n to_o god_n and_o the_o whole_a choir_n of_o bless_a spirit_n without_o any_o warmth_n of_o spirit_n or_o expansion_n of_o heart_n our_o joy_n be_v pure_o the_o jubilee_n of_o our_o mind_n and_o the_o recreation_n of_o our_o reason_n shall_v flow_v without_o shout_n or_o noise_n in_o a_o most_o sweet_a but_o silent_a current_n and_o the_o whole_a scene_n of_o our_o happiness_n shall_v be_v transact_v on_o the_o stage_n of_o our_o reason_n there_o be_v therefore_o no_o room_n for_o bodily_a exercise_n in_o this_o heavenly_a state_n it_o be_v impossible_a we_o shall_v be_v qualify_v by_o it_o for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o heaven_n but_o doubtless_o our_o fitness_n for_o heaven_n must_v consist_v in_o such_o inherent_a quality_n of_o mind_n as_o separate_v soul_n may_v carry_v to_o heaven_n with_o they_o and_o what_o these_o be_v may_v be_v easy_o conclude_v by_o consider_v what_o the_o employment_n of_o heaven_n be_v which_o so_o far_o as_o we_o be_v give_v to_o understand_v of_o it_o consist_v in_o contemplate_v and_o adore_v the_o divinity_n and_o in_o converse_v with_o those_o pure_a and_o bless_a spirit_n that_o dwell_v for_o ever_o in_o his_o presence_n now_o to_o make_v we_o fit_a for_o such_o a_o employment_n the_o only_a necessary_a quality_n of_o mind_n be_v a_o universal_a love_n and_o a_o profound_a humility_n which_o two_o be_v the_o fundamental_a virtue_n of_o religion_n of_o which_o all_o the_o other_o virtue_n be_v so_o many_o different_a operation_n it_o be_v true_a our_o love_n and_o humility_n will_v not_o have_v all_o the_o same_o operation_n in_o the_o other_o world_n as_o they_o have_v in_o this_o because_o there_o we_o shall_v not_o have_v the_o same_o occasion_n for_o they_o for_o be_v place_v above_o all_o suffering_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o most_o perfect_a good_a we_o shall_v have_v no_o occasion_n either_o for_o the_o passive_a virtue_n of_o patience_n and_o meekness_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o injury_n nor_o yet_o for_o those_o active_a virtue_n which_o speak_v we_o distant_a from_o our_o happiness_n such_o as_o faith_n and_o hope_n which_o shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o in_o vision_n and_o fruition_n but_o though_o in_o that_o bless_a state_n we_o shall_v have_v no_o occasion_n to_o express_v our_o love_n and_o humility_n in_o such_o act_n as_o these_o yet_o without_o these_o two_o great_a virtue_n we_o shall_v be_v no_o way_n capable_a of_o the_o heavenly_a employment_n for_o what_o pleasure_n can_v we_o take_v in_o contemplate_v the_o be_v of_o god_n if_o we_o do_v not_o love_v he_o doubtless_o our_o own_o antipathy_n to_o the_o goodness_n and_o purity_n of_o his_o nature_n will_v either_o avert_v our_o eye_n from_o behold_v he_o or_o render_v the_o sight_n of_o he_o horrible_a and_o dreadful_a to_o we_o and_o if_o we_o do_v not_o contemplate_v he_o with_o a_o humble_a and_o lowly_a mind_n the_o sight_n of_o his_o supereminent_a perfection_n will_v either_o provoke_v our_o envy_n or_o contempt_n make_v we_o pine_v to_o see_v ourselves_o out-shone_a by_o he_o or_o contemn_v his_o glory_n out_o of_o a_o overween_a opinion_n of_o our_o own_o again_o if_o we_o do_v not_o love_n god_n we_o can_v adore_v he_o with_o a_o free_a and_o cheerful_a mind_n and_o if_o we_o be_v proud_a and_o self-conceited_a instead_o of_o god_n we_o shall_v adore_v our_o self_n and_o become_v our_o own_o idol_n and_o votary_n so_o that_o without_o humility_n and_o love_n we_o shall_v be_v no_o way_n fit_a for_o the_o other_o part_n of_o that_o sweet_a employment_n which_o consist_v in_o converse_v with_o holy_a and_o bless_a spirit_n for_o their_o conversation_n be_v whole_o regulate_v by_o the_o sacred_a law_n of_o wise_a and_o holy_a friendship_n and_o consist_v in_o a_o everlasting_a intercourse_n of_o chaste_a and_o mutual_a endearment_n no_o soul_n can_v be_v capable_a of_o bear_v a_o part_n in_o it_o that_o be_v not_o inspire_v with_o universal_a love_n and_o great_a humility_n both_o which_o be_v indispensible_o necessary_a to_o every_o wise_a and_o friendly_a conversation_n for_o where_o humility_n be_v want_v every_o trifle_n will_v offend_v and_o where_o charity_n be_v want_v every_o offence_n will_v kindle_v a_o unquenchable_a discord_n so_o that_o a_o proud_a malicious_a nature_n can_v converse_v no_o where_o with_o satisfaction_n much_o less_o with_o those_o bless_a soul_n in_o who_o most_o pure_a and_o perfect_a friendship_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o intermixture_n either_o of_o flattery_n or_o envy_n for_o be_v all_o perfect_o good_a and_o perfect_o happy_a they_o can_v neither_o overvalue_v themselves_o nor_o envy_v what_o another_o enjoy_v so_o that_o in_o all_o their_o conversation_n there_o be_v no_o entertainment_n either_o for_o pride_n or_o malice_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a there_o be_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v distasteful_a to_o they_o for_o where_o there_o be_v none_o that_o overvalue_v either_o themselves_o or_o other_o but_o every_o one_o love_v every_o one_o with_o a_o sincere_a and_o inviolable_a friendship_n there_o can_v be_v no_o conversation_n but_o what_o be_v distasteful_a to_o a_o arrogant_a and_o malicious_a temper_n what_o then_o shall_v a_o proud_a malignant_a spirit_n do_v among_o those_o happy_a being_n a_o great_a part_n of_o who_o heaven_n consist_v in_o rejoice_v in_o each_o other_o happiness_n doubtless_o can_v such_o a_o spirit_n be_v admit_v into_o their_o society_n their_o bliss_n will_v so_o enrage_v its_o envy_n their_o perfection_n so_o upbraid_v its_o baseness_n that_o it_o will_v find_v nothing_o but_o cause_n of_o discontent_n in_o a_o conversation_n so_o disagreeable_a to_o its_o nature_n so_o that_o without_o universal_a love_n and_o profound_a humility_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o heaven_n that_o we_o can_v enjoy_v there_o be_v no_o employment_n in_o that_o bless_a state_n that_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o genius_n of_o a_o proud_a and_o malicious_a mind_n so_o that_o unless_o our_o bodily_a religion_n do_v make_v we_o real_o good_a by_o beget_v in_o we_o those_o heavenly_a virtue_n of_o humility_n and_o love_n it_o be_v altogether_o impertinent_a as_o to_o the_o dispose_n of_o we_o for_o heaven_n and_o after_o all_o our_o fast_n and_o pray_v and_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o sacrament_n we_o shall_v be_v find_v as_o remote_a from_o heaven_n and_o as_o unprepared_a for_o it_o as_o if_o we_o have_v spend_v our_o time_n in_o gather_v cockle_n or_o tell_v the_o sand_n upon_o the_o seashore_n so_o that_o though_o this_o bodily_a exercise_n be_v high_o useful_a and_o necessary_a to_o our_o reformation_n and_o amendment_n and_o be_v in_o itself_o a_o very_a conducive_a mean_n to_o internal_a holiness_n and_o goodness_n yet_o compare_v with_o godliness_n itself_o wherein_o our_o holiness_n and_o goodness_n do_v consist_v it_o be_v of_o very_o little_a account_n either_o as_o to_o the_o reconcile_a we_o to_o god_n or_o the_o perfect_a our_o nature_n or_o to_o the_o entitle_v we_o to_o heaven_n or_o qualify_a we_o for_o it_o now_o from_o hence_o we_o may_v learn_v what_o the_o true_a end_n be_v of_o external_a and_o bodily_a religion_n it_o be_v not_o require_v for_o its_o own_o sake_n without_o any_o far_a end_n or_o intention_n but_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o godliness_n which_o be_v the_o ultimate_a mark_n at_o which_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v level_v and_o direct_v and_o therefore_o as_o he_o that_o will_v build_v a_o house_n must_v make_v use_n of_o the_o mean_n the_o tool_n and_o material_n of_o building_n but_o if_o he_o think_v to_o build_v the_o house_n mere_o
leave_v his_o bed_n and_o his_o good_a purpose_n together_o but_o since_o there_o be_v some_o instance_n wherein_o they_o have_v hold_v and_o prove_v effectual_a that_o be_v sufficient_a to_o demonstrate_v the_o possibility_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o what_o have_v be_v may_v be_v and_o what_o reason_n can_v be_v give_v why_o some_o man_n may_v not_o perform_v in_o eternity_n what_o they_o promise_v on_o their_o deathbed_n as_o well_o as_o other_o do_v after_o their_o recovery_n what_o they_o promise_v on_o their_o sick-bed_n as_o therefore_o the_o relapse_n of_o most_o man_n from_o their_o sickbed_n purpose_v prove_v it_o extreme_o hard_a so_o the_o continuance_n of_o other_o steadfast_a to_o they_o prove_v it_o possible_a for_o such_o purpose_n to_o be_v sincere_a 2._o another_o thing_n that_o prove_v it_o possible_a be_v this_o that_o upon_o a_o deathbed_n oft_o time_n the_o argument_n of_o repentance_n have_v a_o more_o immediate_a access_n to_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n than_o at_o any_o other_o time_n and_o consequent_o may_v be_v well_o suppose_v to_o be_v much_o more_o effectual_a and_o operative_a now_o the_o promise_n and_o threat_n of_o religion_n will_v strike_v more_o immediate_o on_o the_o soul_n the_o good_n and_o evil_n which_o they_o propose_v and_o denounce_v be_v near_a at_o hand_n and_o the_o soul_n perceive_v herself_o within_o a_o moment_n of_o enjoy_v the_o one_o or_o suffer_v the_o other_o for_o ever_o and_o that_o thick_a fog_n of_o earthly_a care_n and_o pleasure_n that_o interrupt_v her_o prospect_n into_o the_o other_o world_n be_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n dispel_v and_o scatter_v she_o lie_v more_o open_a and_o uncover_v to_o the_o thing_n of_o eternity_n and_o therefore_o as_o one_o thing_n strike_v upon_o another_o with_o a_o natural_a effect_n as_o light_n strike_v upon_o the_o eye_n and_o sound_v upon_o the_o ear_n so_o eternal_a thing_n do_v upon_o immortal_a spirit_n when_o there_o be_v nothing_o between_o to_o intercept_v the_o stroke_n and_o make_v most_o deep_a and_o vigorous_a impression_n on_o they_o and_o when_o heaven_n and_o hell_n be_v so_o near_o the_o soul_n that_o she_o expect_v almost_o every_o moment_n to_o expire_v into_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o who_o can_v tell_v what_o strange_a and_o sudden_a alteration_n they_o may_v make_v in_o her_o temper_n and_o resolution_n so_o that_o though_o i_o must_v confess_v it_o be_v a_o stupendous_a effect_n for_o a_o soul_n to_o be_v change_v in_o the_o short_a twinkle_v of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n yet_o when_o i_o consider_v the_o mighty_a influence_n which_o the_o argument_n of_o religion_n may_v then_o be_v reasonable_o suppose_v to_o have_v upon_o she_o i_o dare_v not_o say_v it_o be_v absolute_o impossible_a especial_o consider_v 3._o and_o last_o that_o how_o impossible_a soever_o it_o may_v be_v to_o humane_a power_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o god_n ordinary_o vouchsafe_v his_o grace_n to_o man_n proportionable_o to_o their_o improvement_n of_o it_o and_o i_o confess_v if_o he_o proceed_v by_o this_o rule_n with_o the_o die_a penitent_n he_o have_v less_o reason_n to_o expect_v god_n grace_n now_o than_o in_o any_o former_a period_n of_o his_o life_n but_o yet_o we_o see_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v not_o always_o proceed_v by_o state_v rule_n and_o proportion_n for_o sometime_o god_n have_v give_v the_o large_a measure_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o those_o who_o have_v make_v the_o least_o improvement_n of_o it_o sometime_o very_o great_a sinner_n have_v be_v stop_v in_o their_o wicked_a course_n when_o they_o least_o expect_v it_o and_o turn_v back_o by_o a_o grace_n that_o be_v almost_o irresistible_a and_o though_o this_o be_v more_o ordinary_a than_o other_o miracle_n be_v so_o that_o man_n may_v as_o reasonable_o immure_v themselves_o and_o depend_v upon_o god_n to_o feed_v they_o by_o miracle_n as_o put_v off_o their_o repentance_n to_o the_o last_o in_o expectation_n of_o have_v their_o soul_n renew_v and_o change_v by_o such_o a_o miraculous_a grace_n yet_o who_o know_v but_o when_o the_o poor_a die_a penitent_n under_o the_o mighty_a hope_n and_o fear_n of_o eternity_n be_v struggle_v might_n and_o main_n for_o his_o soul_n to_o rescue_v it_o from_o endless_a misery_n who_o know_v i_o man_n recover_v from_o the_o brink_n of_o eternity_n and_o get_v far_o off_o it_o he_o will_v soon_o forget_v his_o good_a resolution_n and_o leave_v all_o his_o piety_n behind_o he_o for_o when_o he_o resolve_v alas_o he_o be_v sick_a and_o die_a leave_v this_o world_n and_o launch_n into_o another_o but_o when_o he_o be_v well_o again_o the_o case_n will_v be_v alter_v this_o world_n will_v
