there_o be_v some_o passion_n which_o continue_v in_o the_o appetite_n without_o make_v any_o impression_n on_o those_o part_n and_o this_o may_v suffice_v to_o show_v that_o the_o appetite_n may_v move_v so_o as_o that_o the_o body_n be_v not_o change_v thereby_o sect_n 2._o how_o good_a and_o evil_n move_v the_o appetite_n but_o in_o order_n to_o a_o more_o exact_a knowledge_n of_o all_o these_o motion_n we_o be_v yet_o to_o find_v out_o what_o it_o be_v that_o engage_v and_o excite_v the_o appetite_n to_o make_v they_o which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o abstruse_a thing_n of_o any_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o most_o hard_a to_o be_v conceive_v according_a to_o the_o maxim_n of_o the_o school_n for_o though_o it_o be_v out_o of_o all_o controversy_n that_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v the_o only_a object_n which_o cause_n all_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o appetite_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o easy_a to_o express_v the_o manner_n how_o it_o be_v do_v since_o good_a and_o evil_n make_v no_o impression_n on_o the_o soul_n otherwise_o then_o by_o the_o image_n which_o the_o know_a faculty_n frame_v thereof_o of_o and_o that_o those_o image_n have_v not_o any_o other_o virtue_n then_o to_o represent_v for_o if_o that_o representation_n be_v not_o subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o thing_n it_o will_v not_o be_v any_o way_n useful_a to_o which_o be_v frame_v in_o the_o soul_n depart_v not_o out_o of_o the_o faculty_n whereby_o they_o be_v produce_v the_o other_o that_o the_o appetite_n of_o what_o order_n soever_o it_o be_v have_v noâ—_n any_o knowledge_n and_o upon_o these_o two_o foundation_n they_o imagine_v that_o this_o inference_n must_v necessary_o be_v build_v that_o the_o faculty_n act_v one_o after_o another_o by_o a_o certain_a sympathy_n there_o be_v between_o they_o or_o by_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o substance_n unto_o which_o they_o be_v reunite_v now_o we_o shall_v elsewhere_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o these_o two_o mean_n can_v be_v maintain_v and_o
that_o she_o shall_v also_o know_v and_o pursue_v that_o which_o be_v good_a for_o she_o and_o this_o can_v be_v do_v unless_o she_o have_v a_o love_n to_o it_o since_o love_n be_v the_o first_o motion_n frame_v by_o the_o appetite_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pursuit_n of_o good_a and_o as_o the_o presence_n of_o evil_n procure_v grief_n to_o she_o so_o be_v it_o necessary_a that_o the_o presence_n of_o good_a shall_v cause_v pleasure_n to_o she_o but_o as_o we_o say_v before_o these_o passion_n be_v so_o weak_a and_o obscure_a that_o the_o sense_n can_v easy_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o and_o indeed_o they_o be_v not_o easy_o discoverable_a otherwise_o then_o by_o reason_n and_o discourse_n the_o cause_n of_o this_o diversity_n proceed_v not_o only_o hence_o that_o these_o appetite_n be_v more_o incline_v to_o motion_n one_o than_o another_o for_o the_o will_n be_v disengage_v from_o matter_n move_v more_o easy_o than_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n and_o this_o more_o easy_o than_o the_o natural_a in_o regard_n it_o have_v for_o its_o subject_n a_o more_o subtle_a matter_n and_o consequent_o more_o inclinable_a to_o motion_n than_o it_o but_o it_o proceed_v also_o from_o the_o more_o or_o less_o perfect_a knowledge_n which_o direct_v they_o for_o as_o the_o understanding_n know_v more_o perfect_o and_o more_o thing_n than_o the_o imagination_n so_o do_v it_o withal_o inspire_v the_o will_n with_o a_o great_a variety_n of_o motion_n than_o the_o other_o do_v and_o this_o latter_a also_o have_v a_o great_a and_o more_o exact_a knowledge_n than_o the_o natural_a faculty_n do_v according_o frame_v more_o passion_n in_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n than_o there_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a appetite_n sect_n 5._o how_o the_o passion_n of_o one_o appetite_n be_v communicate_v to_o another_o there_o be_v yet_o another_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v which_o be_v of_o very_o great_a importance_n to_o wit_n that_o the_o passion_n frame_v in_o either_o of_o the_o three_o appetite_n be_v ordinary_o communicate_v from_o one_o to_o another_o so_o that_o those_o of_o the_o will_v descend_v into_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n and_o the_o natural_a appetite_n as_o they_o do_v ascend_v into_o the_o will._n for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o will_n do_v many_o time_n suffer_v itself_o to_o be_v transport_v with_o the_o love_n pleasure_n and_o grief_n by_o which_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n be_v stir_v in_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o love_n and_o the_o gladness_n and_o sadness_n of_o the_o mind_n spread_v themselves_o into_o the_o body_n and_o cause_v conformable_a emotion_n therein_o but_o the_o difficulty_n be_v to_o know_v how_o this_o communication_n be_v wrought_v for_o it_o may_v seem_v since_o thing_n material_a can_v have_v no_o action_n upon_o the_o spiritual_a that_o neither_o sensible_a good_n nor_o sensible_a evil_n can_v touch_v the_o spirit_n nor_o consequen_o be_v acceptable_a or_o delightful_a object_n thereto_o on_o the_o other_o side_n though_o the_o understanding_n may_v heighten_v the_o phantasm_n of_o the_o imagination_n and_o render_v they_o spiritual_a yet_o be_v it_o not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o imagination_n to_o change_v the_o idaea_n of_o the_o understanding_n which_o be_v spiritual_a into_o corporeal_a phantasm_n consequent_a whereto_o it_o be_v that_o the_o good_n and_o evil_n of_o the_o mind_n can_v touch_v the_o sensitive_a soul_n nor_o raise_v any_o passion_n therein_o to_o answer_v these_o reason_n and_o resolve_v this_o great_a difficulty_n we_o may_v affirm_v with_o the_o school_n that_o there_o be_v a_o sympathy_n between_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o that_o they_o be_v so_o strict_o combine_v together_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a one_o shall_v not_o have_v a_o sentiment_n of_o what_o pass_v in_o the_o other_o or_o haply_o that_o be_v all_o reunited_a in_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o act_v one_o after_o another_o conformable_o to_o the_o action_n that_o be_v to_o be_v do_v so_o that_o for_o example_n the_o appetite_n move_v after_o the_o knowledge_n of_o imagination_n and_o the_o member_n move_v after_o the_o emotion_n of_o the_o appetite_n in_o regard_n there_o be_v a_o certain_a sympathy_n betwixt_o these_o faculty_n or_o that_o the_o soul_n excite_v they_o and_o dispose_v they_o to_o act_v in_o that_o order_n this_o be_v so_o it_o will_v be_v no_o hard_a matter_n to_o tell_v how_o the_o passion_n of_o one_o appetite_n pass_v into_o another_o in_o as_o much_o as_o these_o power_n act_v one_o after_o another_o according_a to_o the_o sympathy_n there_o be_v between_o they_o or_o by_o the_o particular_a direction_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v necessary_a not_o only_o that_o the_o soul_n shall_v move_v after_o she_o have_v be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o understanding_n but_o it_o be_v also_o requisite_a that_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n shall_v stir_v after_o she_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o we_o apprehend_v that_o the_o will_n be_v oblige_v to_o move_v as_o soon_o as_o the_o imagination_n have_v excite_v some_o motion_n in_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n but_o to_o deal_v ingenuous_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v that_o these_o opinion_n do_v not_o full_o satisfy_v the_o mind_n for_o beside_o that_o the_o word_n sympathy_n be_v one_o of_o those_o term_n that_o serve_v to_o elude_v difficulty_n and_o flatter_v our_o ignorance_n it_o may_v be_v far_o press_v that_o if_o by_o it_o only_o the_o rational_a soul_n and_o the_o sensitive_a communicate_v their_o passion_n to_o each_o other_o it_o will_v be_v requisite_a that_o there_o shall_v not_o be_v any_o passion_n in_o the_o latter_a which_o do_v not_o ascend_v into_o the_o will_n and_o that_o all_o kind_n of_o sadness_n shall_v be_v attend_v by_o grief_n and_o in_o like_a manner_n all_o grief_n by_o sadness_n but_o this_o be_v not_o true_a since_o they_o be_v only_o the_o great_a sadness_n whereof_o the_o body_n have_v any_o resentment_n and_o that_o light_a grief_n reach_v not_o the_o mind_n and_o cast_v it_o not_o into_o sadness_n beside_o this_o sympathy_n do_v not_o exclude_v that_o manner_n of_o act_v which_o be_v natural_a to_o the_o faculty_n it_o be_v a_o order_n establish_v by_o nature_n that_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n shall_v be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o imagination_n and_o that_o the_o imagination_n shall_v take_v cognizance_n only_o of_o thing_n sensible_a how_o come_v it_o then_o to_o pass_v that_o it_o shall_v know_v the_o object_n of_o a_o spiritual_a passion_n on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o be_v we_o to_o conceive_v that_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n which_o be_v spiritual_a power_n suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v move_v by_o corporeal_a object_n and_o how_o can_v grief_n for_o example_n be_v say_v to_o excite_v sadness_n in_o the_o mind_n what_o sympathy_n soever_o may_v be_v imagine_v between_o these_o power_n in_o fine_a sympathy_n do_v always_o presuppose_v some_o knowledge_n for_o the_o iron_n ought_v to_o feel_v the_o presence_n of_o the_o loadstone_n that_o it_o may_v move_v towards_o it_o and_o consequent_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o every_o appetite_n shall_v know_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o faculty_n which_o enlighten_v it_o whereas_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n the_o appetite_n be_v a_o blind-power_n and_o such_o as_o have_v not_o any_o knowledge_n again_o if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o it_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o set_v these_o faculty_n in_o action_n which_o yet_o can_v be_v do_v without_o she_o have_v a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o order_n they_o ought_v to_o observe_v in_o their_o action_n and_o a_o particular_a cognizance_n of_o the_o manner_n after_o which_o the_o appetite_n ought_v to_o move_v in_o every_o passion_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o have_v in_o herself_o the_o knowledge_n of_o a_o infinity_n of_o thing_n and_o that_o she_o shall_v know_v they_o by_o her_o own_o proper_a substance_n without_o the_o assistance_n of_o any_o faculty_n a_o excellency_n not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o any_o create_v be_v and_o to_o
