to_o heal_v the_o wound_n of_o the_o imagination_n but_o by_o continual_o turn_v the_o course_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o renew_v they_o as_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o wound_n in_o the_o body_n to_o close_v up_o if_o you_o thrust_v the_o sword_n which_o make_v it_o every_o moment_n into_o it_o or_o any_o thing_n which_o renew_v and_o inflame_v it_o xiii_o but_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o only_o of_o themselves_o and_o as_o it_o be_v fortuitous_o flow_v into_o the_o wound_n which_o the_o brain_n have_v receive_v from_o the_o action_n of_o sensible_a object_n they_o be_v which_o go_v on_o in_o its_o motion_n without_o expect_v the_o order_n of_o the_o will_n and_o many_o time_n by_o reason_n of_o sin_n contrary_a to_o they_o so_o that_o whenever_o we_o cease_v to_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o hinder_v the_o separate_a part_n from_o reunite_a xvi_o now_o the_o reason_n why_o grace_n do_v not_o deliver_v we_o from_o our_o passion_n nor_o baptism_n from_o the_o continual_a assault_n of_o our_o concupiscence_n be_v because_o the_o power_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n appear_v much_o more_o by_o the_o continual_a victory_n which_o the_o just_a obtain_v will_v deliver_v he_o from_o that_o which_o he_o call_v a_o thorn_n in_o the_o flesh_n but_o christ_n answer_v he_o 9_o 2_o cor._n 12._o v._n 8_o 9_o my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o for_o by_o the_o light_n conduct_n the_o soul_n to_o its_o happiness_n the_o body_n by_o pleasure_n involve_v the_o whole_a man_n in_o its_o ruin_n and_o throw_v he_o headlong_o into_o misery_n in_o a_o word_n though_o it_o be_v god_n that_o do_v every_o thing_n and_o though_o the_o body_n can_v act_v upon_o the_o soul_n no_o more_o than_o the_o soul_n can_v upon_o the_o body_n but_o as_o a_o occasional_a cause_n in_o consequence_n of_o the_o law_n of_o their_o union_n and_o for_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n which_o without_o meddle_v with_o those_o law_n have_v change_v the_o union_n into_o a_o dependence_n yet_o we_o may_v say_v that_o it_o be_v the_o body_n which_o darken_v the_o mind_n and_o corrupt_v the_o heart_n for_o the_o relation_n which_o the_o soul_n have_v to_o the_o body_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o our_o error_n and_o disorder_n iii_o notwithstanding_o we_o shall_v be_v thorough_o convince_v of_o this_o and_o never_o forget_v it_o that_o the_o soul_n can_v have_v no_o immediate_a relation_n but_o to_o god_n alone_o and_o that_o it_o can_v be_v unite_v direct_o to_o any_o thing_n but_o to_o he_o for_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o body_n but_o as_o it_o be_v unite_v to_o god_n himself_o it_o be_v certain_a for_o very_a many_o reason_n that_o if_o i_o feel_v for_o instance_n the_o pain_n of_o a_o scratch_v it_o be_v god_n that_o act_n in_o i_o though_o in_o consequence_n of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n for_o those_o law_n derive_v their_o force_n from_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o divine_a will_n which_o alone_o be_v capable_a of_o act_v in_o i_o but_o the_o body_n by_o itself_o can_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o soul_n nor_o the_o soul_n to_o the_o body_n they_o have_v no_o relation_n to_o one_o another_o nor_o any_o one_o creature_n to_o another_o i_o speak_v of_o relation_n of_o causality_n such_o be_v those_o which_o depend_v on_o the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n it_o be_v god_n that_o do_v every_o thing_n his_o will_n be_v the_o union_n of_o all_o union_n the_o modification_n of_o substance_n depend_v on_o he_o alone_o who_o give_v and_o preserve_v their_o be_v this_o be_v a_o essential_a truth_n which_o i_o think_v i_o have_v sufficient_o prove_v in_o another_o place_n iu._n but_o though_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v unite_v immediate_o to_o any_o thing_n but_o god_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o creature_n by_o the_o will_n of_o god_n who_o communicate_v his_o power_n to_o they_o in_o make_v they_o occasional_a cause_n for_o the_o production_n of_o certain_a effect_n my_o soul_n be_v unite_v to_o my_o body_n because_o on_o one_o side_n my_o will_n be_v make_v the_o occasional_a cause_n of_o some_o change_n which_o god_n alone_o produce_v on_o it_o and_o in_o the_o other_o because_o the_o change_n which_o happen_v in_o my_o body_n be_v make_v occasional_a cause_n of_o some_o of_o those_o which_o happen_v in_o my_o soul_n v._o now_o god_n have_v establish_v these_o law_n for_o many_o reason_n which_o be_v unknown_a to_o we_o but_o of_o those_o which_o we_o do_v know_v one_o be_v that_o god_n in_o follow_v they_o act_n in_o a_o uniform_a and_o constant_a manner_n by_o general_a law_n by_o the_o most_o simple_a and_o wise_a way_n in_o a_o word_n he_o act_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o admirable_o bear_v the_o character_n of_o his_o attribute_n another_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o body_n of_o man_n be_v his_o proper_a sacrifice_n for_o it_o seem_v to_o sacrifice_n itself_o by_o pain_n and_o to_o be_v annihilate_v by_o death_n the_o soul_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o probation_n in_o the_o body_n and_o god_n who_o desire_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o be_v merit_v and_o to_o proportion_n reward_v to_o merit_n do_v by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o
it_o thus_o there_o be_v a_o mutual_a correspondence_n between_o certain_a thought_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o certain_a modification_n of_o the_o body_n in_o consequence_n of_o those_o natural_a law_n which_o god_n have_v establish_v and_o which_o he_o condant_o observe_v herein_o consist_v the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n the_o imagination_n may_v raise_v other_o idea_n of_o all_o this_o but_o this_o correspondence_n be_v undeniable_a and_o be_v sufficient_a for_o my_o purpose_n so_o that_o i_o neither_o do_v nor_o aught_o to_o build_v on_o uncertain_a foundation_n fourteen_o second_o i_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v know_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o join_v immediate_o to_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o body_n but_o only_o to_o one_o part_n which_o answer_v to_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o which_o i_o call_v without_o know_v what_o it_o be_v the_o principal_a part_n so_o that_o notwithstanding_o the_o law_n of_o the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n a_o man_n may_v have_v his_o arm_n cut_v off_o and_o yet_o have_v no_o thought_n arise_v in_o his_o soul_n correspondent_a to_o it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o the_o least_o change_n shall_v happen_v in_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n without_o cause_v also_o some_o alteration_n in_o the_o soul_n this_o be_v verify_v by_o experience_n for_o sometime_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v cut_v off_o without_o be_v feel_v because_o then_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o amputation_n do_v not_o communicate_v itself_o to_o the_o principal_a part._n as_o on_o the_o contrary_a those_o that_o have_v lose_v a_o arm_n often_o feel_v a_o real_a pain_n in_o that_o very_a arm_n which_o they_o have_v not_o because_o there_o be_v the_o same_o motion_n in_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n as_o if_o the_o arm_n be_v hurt_v xv._o the_o first_o man_n before_o his_o sin_n have_v a_o absolute_a power_n over_o his_o body_n at_o least_o he_o can_v when_o he_o please_v hinder_v the_o motion_n or_o action_n of_o object_n from_o communicate_v itself_o to_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n from_o the_o organ_n of_o the_o sense_n which_o may_v be_v touch_v by_o those_o object_n and_o this_o he_o do_v probable_o by_o a_o kind_n of_o revulsion_n somewhat_o like_o that_o which_o we_o make_v in_o ourselves_o when_o we_o will_v fix_v our_o attention_n on_o those_o thought_n which_o disappear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o sensible_a object_n xvi_o but_o i_o suppose_v in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o we_o have_v not_o now_o that_o power_n and_o therefore_o to_o obtain_v some_o liberty_n of_o mind_n to_o think_v on_o what_o we_o will_v and_o love_v what_o we_o ought_v it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o principal_a part_n shall_v be_v calm_a and_o without_o agitation_n or_o at_o least_o that_o we_o shall_v still_o be_v able_a to_o stop_v and_o turn_v it_o which_o way_n we_o please_v our_o attention_n depend_v on_o our_o will_n but_o it_o i_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v know_v that_o the_o principal_a part_n be_v never_o touch_v or_o shake_v in_o a_o agreeable_a or_o disagreeable_a manner_n but_o it_o excite_v in_o the_o animal_n spirit_n
