and_o will_v do_v as_o we_o will_v be_v do_v unto_o this_o love_n will_v honour_v obey_v and_o submit_v unto_o all_o our_o superior_n whether_o in_o family_n or_o state_n or_o church_n according_a to_o their_o place_n and_o will_v not_o dishonour_v disobey_v or_o any_o way_n as_o such_o disrespect_n they_o 6._o this_o love_n will_v not_o give_v way_n to_o anger_n malice_n envy_n implacable_a revenge_n or_o any_o such_o violent_a and_o destructive_a passion_n which_o tend_v to_o the_o endanger_n of_o limb_n or_o life_n but_o it_o will_v account_v the_o life_n of_o our_o neighbour_n very_o precious_a and_o will_v use_v all_o mean_n to_o preserve_v it_o and_o to_o live_v in_o peace_n concord_n and_o safety_n 7._o this_o love_n will_v detest_v adultery_n whoredom_n fornication_n incest_n and_o all_o uncleanness_n with_o all_o the_o cause_n and_o occasion_n thereof_o it_o will_v endeavour_v chastity_n in_o body_n and_o spirit_n and_o use_v all_o mean_n to_o preserve_v it_o 8._o this_o devotion_n take_v out_o of_o this_o bless_a book_n yet_o all_o these_o seem_v to_o be_v but_o so_o many_o branch_n of_o that_o excellent_a form_n which_o our_o saviour_n teach_v his_o disciple_n wherein_o he_o contract_v the_o substance_n of_o all_o lawful_a prayer_n and_o that_o in_o a_o excellent_a method_n it_o be_v teach_v and_o prescribe_v in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o humiliation_n and_o be_v suitable_a unto_o their_o present_a light_n and_o condition_n for_o herein_o he_o give_v no_o direction_n how_o to_o ask_v any_o thing_n in_o his_o name_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v he_o be_v not_o yet_o glorify_v nor_o make_v advocate_n general_a in_o heaven_n nor_o possess_v of_o his_o glorious_a kingdom_n this_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v intimate_v in_o that_o petition_n thy_o kingdom_n come_v for_o then_o to_o he_o and_o so_o to_o they_o it_o be_v to_o come_v in_o it_o we_o may_v observe_v 1._o the_o entrance_n or_o preface_n 2._o the_o body_n and_o matter_n 3._o the_o conclusion_n in_o the_o entrance_n we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o 1._o the_o party_n who_o must_v perform_v this_o duty_n 2._o the_o party_n for_o who_o prayer_n must_v be_v make_v 3._o the_o party_n to_o who_o prayer_n must_v be_v make_v 4._o the_o qualification_n of_o the_o prayer_n itself_o 1._o the_o party_n who_o must_v perform_v this_o duty_n be_v person_n live_v on_o earth_n who_o have_v not_o lose_v their_o interest_n in_o god_n upon_o who_o all_o and_o every_o one_o depend_v and_o our_o necessity_n be_v many_o and_o great_a and_o prayer_n be_v ordain_v as_o a_o mean_n whereby_o all_o thing_n we_o need_v may_v be_v obtain_v and_o that_o more_o certain_o because_o we_o have_v a_o promise_n beside_o its_o a_o universal_a command_n and_o all_o man_n be_v bind_v in_o that_o respect_n to_o pray_v and_o by_o prayer_n to_o worship_n and_o glorify_v god_n for_o by_o it_o we_o acknowledge_v that_o god_n be_v the_o supreme_a lord_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o goodness_n the_o father_n of_o mercy_n will_v free_o to_o give_v we_o what_o we_o need_v and_o that_o we_o be_v miserable_a and_o indigent_a person_n and_o that_o god_n be_v no_o way_n bind_v to_o relieve_v we_o or_o supply_v our_o want_n but_o only_o he_o promise_v to_o hear_v and_o help_v and_o this_o promise_n be_v free_o make_v some_o will_v not_o pray_v some_o can_v some_o can_v pray_v but_o not_o effectual_o yet_o all_o these_o be_v bind_v to_o pray_v and_o therefore_o their_o sin_n or_o misery_n must_v be_v very_o great_a 2._o the_o person_n for_o who_o we_o must_v pray_v be_v ourselves_o and_o all_o other_o who_o be_v capable_a of_o any_o benefit_n by_o our_o prayer_n for_o we_o be_v direct_v to_o say_v our_o father_n and_o in_o this_o word_n our_o we_o include_v ourselves_o and_o other_o too_o as_o we_o must_v love_v our_o neighbour_n as_o ourselves_o so_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o our_o neighbour_n as_o for_o ourselves_o and_o by_o neighbour_n we_o must_v understand_v not_o only_o our_o acquaintance_n and_o friend_n but_o stranger_n and_o enemy_n for_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o they_o which_o despiteful_o use_v we_o so_o christ_n pray_v for_o such_o as_o do_v crucify_v he_o say_v father_n forgive_v they_o for_o they_o know_v not_o what_o they_o do_v yet_o as_o we_o must_v love_v some_o more_o than_o other_o so_o we_o must_v pray_v more_o especial_o for_o some_o than_o other_o most_o of_o all_o for_o the_o church_n and_o our_o persecute_a brethren_n for_o christian_a charity_n in_o our_o prayer_n do_v enlarge_v itself_o and_o abhor_v partiality_n and_o self-love_n 3._o the_o person_n to_o who_o we_o must_v pray_v be_v god_n and_o god_n be_v our_o father_n in_o heaven_n father_n be_v a_o word_n of_o power_n and_o pity_n father_n in_o heaven_n be_v a_o term_n of_o supreme_a power_n and_o infinite_a pity_n and_o if_o all_o the_o power_n and_o pity_n of_o all_o father_n even_o the_o best_a be_v unite_v in_o one_o yet_o all_o be_v nothing_o to_o the_o pity_n and_o power_n of_o our_o god_n this_o father_n love_v we_o and_o give_v his_o son_n for_o we_o when_o we_o be_v enemy_n and_o call_v we_o when_o we_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o trespass_n great_a love_n never_o be_v manifest_v to_o any_o creature_n and_o great_a love_n to_o any_o creature_n there_o can_v be_v and_o how_o much_o must_v he_o love_v we_o when_o once_o we_o begin_v to_o love_v he_o as_o our_o god_n what_o can_v a_o father_n in_o heaven_n what_o will_v not_o a_o father_n in_o christ_n do_v for_o his_o child_n see_v in_o he_o meet_v in_o one_o power_n and_o pity_n might_n and_o mercy_n greatness_n and_o goodness_n which_o include_v all_o his_o perfection_n thus_o we_o must_v conceive_v of_o god_n to_o who_o we_o address_v ourselves_o to_o who_o we_o direct_v our_o prayer_n 4._o the_o qualification_n of_o prayer_n be_v many_o 1._o one_o be_v faith_n whereby_o we_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v present_a in_o all_o place_n at_o all_o time_n hear_v all_o prayer_n know_v all_o thing_n and_o with_o what_o heart_n we_o pray_v that_o he_o be_v just_a holy_a wise_a of_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o unspeakable_a mercy_n in_o christ_n who_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o in_o great_a trial_n order_v all_o occurrence_n and_o event_n by_o thy_o wise_a providence_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o that_o in_o great_a strait_n we_o may_v find_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v and_o though_o we_o can_v avoid_v always_o the_o evil_a of_o affliction_n yet_o we_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o the_o evil_n of_o sin_n sanctify_v all_o condition_n both_o of_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n unto_o we_o so_o that_o satan_n by_o they_o may_v not_o gain_v any_o advantage_n against_o we_o tread_v he_o short_o under_o our_o foot_n and_o put_v a_o end_n to_o all_o our_o trouble_n sin_n or_o guilt_n or_o from_o temptation_n or_o from_o the_o misery_n of_o this_o life_n and_o here_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v 1._o that_o all_o the_o prayer_n in_o scriptuer_n may_v be_v reduce_v to_o the_o several_a head_n of_o this_o form_n which_o though_o it_o contract_v the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n unto_o a_o few_o head_n dispose_v in_o a_o excellent_a order_n yet_o leave_v it_o supplication_n for_o blessing_n or_o with_o deprecation_n for_o deliverance_n from_o evil_n the_o principal_a thing_n be_v to_o pray_v to_o god_n alone_o with_o a_o upright_a heart_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n for_o such_o thing_n as_o god_n have_v promise_v that_o we_o may_v be_v accept_v and_o hear_v chap._n ix_o of_o christ_n promise_n to_o the_o apostle_n sect._n 1_o you_o hear_v before_o that_o there_o be_v two_o part_n of_o the_o commission_n grant_v by_o christ_n unto_o his_o apostle_n the_o first_o be_v a_o mandate_n to_o go_v to_o all_o nation_n to_o disciple_v they_o to_o baptize_v they_o disciple_v to_o teach_v they_o baptize_v to_o observe_v all_o his_o commandment_n the_o second_o a_o promise_n of_o which_o i_o will_v now_o speak_v in_o a_o few_o word_n and_o so_o conclude_v and_o we_o must_v observe_v 1._o the_o reason_n why_o christ_n make_v this_o promise_n 2._o the_o word_n of_o the_o promise_n partly_o exprss_v here_o partly_o mark_v 16._o 17_o 18._o there_o be_v several_a reason_n which_o move_v christ_n to_o add_v this_o promise_n for_o 1._o as_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n do_v trouble_v they_o much_o so_o do_v his_o departure_n he_o must_v go_v and_o leave_v they_o behind_o he_o he_o be_v their_o dear_a lord_n who_o they_o love_v he_o be_v their_o joy_n their_o solace_n their_o guide_n and_o their_o protector_n and_o to_o part_v with_o he_o go_v near_o their_o heart_n all_o this_o christ_n understand_v and_o therefore_o to_o comfort_v and_o revive_v their_o sink_a spirit_n that_o so_o though_o he_o withdraw_v his_o bodily_a presence_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v encourage_v to_o go_v on_o with_o the_o work_n he_o add_v this_o promise_n because_o he_o will_v be_v present_a with_o they_o in_o another_o and_o more_o effectual_a intend_v to_o trust_v with_o the_o dispensation_n of_o word_n and_o sacrament_n these_o be_v of_o two_o sort_n 1._o extraordinary_n 2._o ordinary_a the_o extraordinary_a be_v the_o apostle_n to_o who_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v immediate_o and_o principal_o for_o their_o place_n be_v high_a and_o extraordinary_a their_o power_n great_a and_o of_o large_a extent_n their_o work_n very_o difficult_a their_o suffering_n grievous_a their_o enemy_n many_o potent_a cruel_a these_o must_v lay_v the_o foundation_n and_o plant_v the_o christian_a church_n in_o all_o nation_n confirm_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n preach_v by_o they_o with_o many_o sign_n wonder_n and_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n they_o must_v be_v infallible_a in_o word_n and_o writing_n and_o leave_v their_o doctrine_n upon_o record_n to_o be_v a_o rule_n of_o doctrine_n faith_n and_o life_n unto_o the_o world_n end_n yet_o these_o must_v die_v and_o when_o they_o have_v finish_v rhe_n great_a work_n leave_v the_o world_n and_o the_o church_n which_o they_o have_v plant_v must_v continue_v and_o must_v have_v her_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n who_o must_v dispense_v both_o word_n and_o sacrament_n in_o the_o generation_n follow_v till_o time_n shall_v be_v no_o more_o therefore_o the_o promise_n must_v be_v understand_v as_o make_v to_o all_o their_o lawful_a successor_n in_o the_o ministry_n till_o the_o number_n of_o god_n saint_n be_v make_v up_o for_o what_o can_v those_o do_v except_o christ_n in_o their_o successive_a generation_n be_v with_o they_o how_o shall_v they_o
