other_o mean_n be_v a_o spirit_n of_o life_n and_o serve_v not_o alone_o to_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o our_o flesh_n but_o to_o quicken_v our_o inward_a man_n also_o till_o we_o come_v to_o be_v perfect_a man_n in_o christ_n and_o have_v his_o image_n full_o renew_v in_o us._n we_o want_v none_o help_v this_o way_n that_o we_o can_v desire_v if_o we_o want_v not_o care_n to_o use_v they_o and_o we_o may_v be_v well_o assure_v that_o he_o which_o have_v provide_v they_o do_v never_o intend_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v provide_v in_o vain_a but_o that_o he_o will_v have_v we_o use_v they_o and_o by_o the_o use_n attain_v the_o fruit_n of_o they_o three_o reason_n 3_o if_o we_o grow_v not_o better_o worse_o if_o they_o grow_v not_o better_o they_o shall_v soon_o grow_v worse_o it_o can_v be_v long_o afore_o we_o grow_v worse_o there_o will_v be_v a_o sensible_a decay_n of_o grace_n after_o a_o little_a while_n if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o addition_n to_o it_o we_o move_v to_o their_o proper_a place_n of_o rest_n so_o must_v all_o the_o motion_n of_o goodness_n be_v in_o god_n saint_n last_o of_o all_o reason_v 4_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n here_o glory_n growth_n in_o grace_n will_v procure_v growth_n in_o glory_n shall_v procure_v unto_o we_o a_o growth_n in_o glory_n hereafter_o the_o more_o holiness_n we_o attain_v in_o this_o world_n the_o more_o happiness_n we_o shall_v attain_v in_o the_o other_o world_n every_o dram_n of_o grace_n shall_v be_v reward_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o pound_n of_o glory_n if_o we_o be_v rich_a in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n our_o labour_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a in_o the_o lord_n but_o he_o will_v exceed_o plentiful_o requite_v all_o the_o service_n which_o we_o have_v perform_v for_o he_o and_o all_o the_o virtue_n which_o we_o have_v for_o his_o sake_n labour_v to_o get_v and_o exercise_v he_o that_o sow_n liberal_o shall_v reap_v liberal_o he_o that_o sow_n spare_o shall_v also_o reap_v spare_o this_o life_n be_v our_o seedes-time_n that_o to_o come_v must_v be_v our_o harvest_n who_o will_v not_o be_v encourage_v by_o so_o inestimable_a reward_n to_o strain_v himself_o to_o all_o painfulness_n that_o he_o may_v grow_v so_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o grow_v in_o grace_n for_o we_o have_v sufficient_a help_n and_o mean_n it_o be_v profitable_a for_o we_o shall_v grow_v in_o glory_n and_o that_o also_o proportionable_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o be_v not_o yet_o come_v to_o our_o full_a growth_n yea_o it_o be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n so_o to_o grow_v for_o else_o we_o shall_v grow_v worse_o and_o worse_o even_o from_o aught_o to_o nought_o as_o the_o proverb_n speak_v and_o all_o these_o reason_n confirm_v the_o point_n and_o show_v that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n people_n to_o wax_v better_a and_o better_o only_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v whether_o that_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n do_v perform_v this_o duty_n and_o be_v in_o act_n more_o holy_a and_o virtuous_a every_o day_n than_o other_o to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v with_o god_n people_n as_o with_o child_n who_o be_v subject_a to_o many_o sick_a sit_v in_o which_o they_o do_v wear_v away_o and_o even_o lose_v their_o flesh_n and_o strength_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o recover_v and_o come_v to_o be_v man_n at_o last_o yea_o and_o strong_a man_n too_o a_o christian_a oftentimes_o do_v go_v backward_o for_o a_o season_n length_n sometime_o god_n people_n for_o a_o time_n do_v grow_v worse_o but_o they_o recover_v and_o become_v more_o humble_a that_o be_v better_o at_o length_n but_o he_o recover_v himself_o feel_v his_o go_v back_o return_v and_o at_o the_o last_o become_v better_a indeed_o though_o not_o in_o his_o own_o feel_n then_o ever_o he_o be_v for_o after_o it_o may_v be_v some_o long_a faint_a and_o fade_v of_o grace_n he_o be_v bring_v back_o with_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o his_o own_o baseness_n than_o ever_o he_o have_v before_o and_o so_o grow_v in_o humility_n grow_v likewise_o in_o all_o grace_n for_o with_o the_o growth_n of_o that_o all_o do_v grow_v though_o perhaps_o he_o may_v not_o live_v to_o do_v so_o many_o excellent_a work_n as_o former_o he_o have_v do_v and_o so_o the_o story_n of_o holy_a writ_n do_v show_v that_o it_o be_v with_o david_n who_o seem_v worse_o after_o his_o settle_n in_o the_o kingdom_n then_o before_o and_o be_v so_o for_o a_o while_n but_o rise_v up_o again_o he_o be_v more_o holy_a than_o ever_o before_o though_o he_o fight_v not_o so_o many_o battle_n as_o before_o chap._n xvii_o contain_v the_o first_o use_n of_o the_o last_o point_n viz._n a_o terror_n to_o they_o that_o grow_v worse_o now_o this_o point_n concern_v the_o branch_n bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n use_v 1_o rather_o terror_n to_o they_o that_o decay_n rather_o serve_v to_o discover_v the_o unhappiness_n of_o those_o man_n in_o who_o no_o such_o growth_n be_v find_v but_o the_o quite_o contrary_a viz._n that_o be_v grow_v backward_o and_o fall_v behind_o hand_n be_v more_o feeble_a in_o all_o grace_n and_o scant_o in_o all_o good_a work_n then_o former_o they_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v the_o minister_n either_o for_o some_o point_n of_o doctrine_n which_o he_o teach_v contrary_a to_o their_o mind_n or_o for_o some_o faultinesse_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o teach_v or_o for_o some_o mis-behaviour_n of_o life_n or_o for_o some_o thing_n or_o other_o against_o which_o they_o can_v allege_v any_o probable_a show_n of_o quarrel_n rather_o then_o that_o they_o will_v not_o seem_v to_o themselves_o to_o have_v cause_n of_o not_o care_v to_o come_v to_o hear_v they_o be_v wont_a to_o read_v much_o and_o pray_v often_o and_o take_v time_n to_o meditate_v upon_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v but_o now_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v either_o quite_o lay_v aside_o or_o very_o seldom_o perform_v once_o they_o be_v abundant_a in_o work_n of_o mercy_n now_o they_o be_v scant_o and_o spare_a former_o they_o be_v lively_a in_o their_o service_n now_o little_o less_o than_o dead_a and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o they_o that_o any_o man_n which_o have_v occasion_n of_o converse_v with_o they_o may_v plain_o perceive_v they_o to_o be_v change_v from_o better_a to_o worse_o o_o this_o be_v a_o lamentable_a condition_n have_v its_o original_n in_o the_o overgrowth_n of_o voluptuousness_n worldliness_n pride_n or_o some_o other_o like_o carnal_a affection_n and_o shall_v have_v its_o issue_n either_o in_o some_o grievous_a sin_n or_o heavy_a calamity_n or_o both_o even_o though_o they_o be_v god_n child_n i_o dare_v not_o say_v brethren_z that_o it_o may_v not_o befall_v a_o true_a christian_a thus_o to_o fade_v for_o a_o season_n and_o yet_o the_o wither_a of_o the_o blade_n be_v a_o sore_a sign_n of_o a_o stony_a ground_n but_o this_o i_o dare_v
or_o to_o any_o other_o unlawful_a some_o liberty_n not_o to_o be_v condemn_v as_o wicked_a will_v yet_o so_o confirm_v and_o strengthen_v certain_a peculiar_a distemper_n of_o some_o man_n soul_n more_o than_o of_o other_o that_o the_o enjoy_n of_o such_o content_n will_v prove_v exceed_o mischievous_a and_o do_v he_o a_o hundred_o time_n more_o harm_n than_o the_o content_a thereof_o can_v be_v worth_a unto_o he_o be_v we_o therefore_o as_o wary_a and_o cautelous_a for_o our_o spiritual_a health_n as_o for_o our_o natural_a let_v we_o set_v bound_n to_o ourselves_o even_o in_o the_o use_n of_o our_o lawful_a liberty_n in_o thing_n indifferent_a and_o not_o please_v our_o sense_n and_o fancy_n to_o the_o wound_a and_o hurt_v of_o our_o soul_n now_o brethren_n these_o be_v the_o most_o needful_a direction_n for_o the_o overmaster_v of_o the_o evil_n of_o our_o inward_a man_n which_o i_o think_v fit_a to_o commend_v unto_o you_o he_o that_o will_v follow_v they_o shall_v find_v a_o sensible_a decay_n of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n he_o shall_v find_v the_o flesh_n more_o and_o more_o subdue_v unto_o the_o spirit_n he_o shall_v find_v himself_o able_a to_o prevail_v against_o those_o passion_n and_o lust_n that_o he_o have_v sometime_o think_v impossible_a to_o be_v prevail_v against_o he_o shall_v be_v keep_v from_o many_o gross_a fault_n and_o many_o dangerous_a our-strayings_a and_o shall_v far_o less_o frequent_o and_o less_o violent_o be_v foil_v of_o his_o spiritual_a enemy_n then_o without_o they_o it_o will_v prove_v or_o seem_v possible_a yea_o in_o thus_o prune_v himself_o he_o shall_v save_v the_o husbandman_n a_o labour_n of_o prune_v and_o keep_v himself_o at_o ease_n from_o many_o burdensome_a cross_n that_o must_v needs_o come_v upon_o he_o otherwise_o consider_v therefore_o of_o thy_o own_o infirmity_n consider_v that_o thou_o be_v in_o part_n alone_o sanctify_v consider_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o quite_o and_o clean_o take_v from_o thy_o soul_n but_o alone_o depose_v from_o that_o tyrannical_a dominion_n which_o once_o it_o do_v exercise_n over_o thy_o soul_n consider_v that_o satan_n watch_v all_o advantage_n to_o catch_v thou_o in_o a_o snare_n and_o to_o bring_v thou_o back_o again_o to_o folly_n and_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o full_o perfect_a be_v content_a to_o devour_v the_o pain_n of_o help_v thyself_o against_o thy_o imperfection_n which_o if_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o do_v know_v that_o thou_o shall_v even_o enforce_v the_o lord_n to_o compel_v thou_o as_o it_o be_v by_o foul_a mean_n to_o the_o do_v of_o that_o without_o which_o he_o do_v well_o know_v that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v safe_a namely_o of_o fight_v against_o the_o fleshly_a lust_n that_o fight_v against_o thy_o soul_n chap._n x._o contain_v the_o four_o and_o last_o use_n of_o the_o point_n viz._n a_o consolation_n to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n against_o their_o unallowed_a fin_n but_o moreover_o use_v 4_o this_o point_n we_o have_v speak_v of_o disallow_v comfort_n to_o god_n people_n against_o the_o sin_n which_o they_o feel_v and_o disallow_v though_o it_o seem_v at_o first_o hear_v to_o be_v altogether_o uncomfortable_a do_v yet_o afford_v a_o sure_a and_o needful_a comfort_n unto_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n that_o have_v wisdom_n to_o apply_v it_o the_o right_a way_n for_o why_o it_o follow_v hence_o necessary_o that_o the_o branch_n in_o this_o vine_n shall_v not_o be_v appall_v nor_o out_o of_o heart_n because_o they_o be_v continual_o trouble_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o many_o thing_n amiss_o which_o it_o be_v far_o more_o desirable_a to_o have_v lop_v off_o then_o continue_v upon_o they_o here_o be_v cause_n not_o of_o not_o be_v humble_v but_o of_o not_o be_v discourage_v in_o the_o senfe_fw-mi and_o feeling_n of_o our_o manifold_a corruption_n for_o it_o be_v sure_a a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o line_n and_o a_o fruitful_a branch_n and_o yet_o stand_v in_o great_a need_n of_o much_o prune_n it_o do_v often_o arise_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o true_a of_o god_n people_n as_o a_o argument_n against_o their_o truth_n that_o they_o have_v so_o many_o sin_n still_o stir_v in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o do_v daily_o transgress_v so_o many_o way_n and_o oftentimes_o in_o very_o high_a degree_n and_o gross_a kind_n now_o if_o we_o have_v well_o consult_v with_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n that_o live_v in_o former_a time_n and_o of_o who_o life_n the_o holy_a scripture_n do_v give_v we_o a_o map_n or_o abridgement_n we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o force_n at_o all_o in_o this_o argument_n unless_o in_o so_o speak_v we_o will_v offend_v against_o the_o generation_n of_o god_n child_n as_o the_o psalmist_n speak_v in_o another_o case_n for_o what_o reason_n be_v strong_a and_o good_a against_o i_o or_o any_o of_o you_o that_o now_o live_v the_o same_o have_v be_v also_o firm_a and_o strong_a against_o many_o of_o those_o that_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n in_o former_a time_n and_o if_o the_o scripture_n do_v assure_v we_o of_o their_o be_v dear_o belove_v of_o god_n and_o sure_o ingraff_v into_o christ_n even_o at_o the_o self_n same_o time_n when_o they_o do_v complain_v of_o like_a corruption_n to_o those_o that_o we_o now_o do_v complain_v of_o then_o we_o may_v safe_o collect_v hence_o that_o we_o also_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o that_o we_o can_v deny_v ourselves_o to_o be_v pollute_v with_o such_o evil_n wherefore_o if_o you_o will_v true_o conclude_v of_o yourselves_o in_o this_o behalse_a whether_o you_o be_v or_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n you_o must_v not_o look_v so_o much_o only_o to_o what_o corruption_n you_o have_v as_o to_o what_o you_o allow_v for_o true_a grace_n may_v stand_v with_o the_o have_v of_o many_o but_o not_o with_o the_o allow_v of_o any_o he_o that_o excuse_v extenuate_v make_v light_n of_o any_o sin_n at_o all_o and_o think_v he_o need_v not_o great_o care_v for_o leave_v off_o that_o because_o it_o be_v so_o small_a a_o matter_n and_o because_o he_o be_v persuade_v that_o there_o be_v never_o a_o man_n alive_a but_o do_v as_o bad_a and_o therefore_o bear_v himself_o bold_o upon_o god_n misapply_v mercy_n that_o he_o shall_v do_v well_o enough_o for_o all_o that_o he_o allow_v sin_n he_o give_v it_o liberty_n and_o licence_n and_o yield_v himself_o to_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n and_o this_o man_n be_v not_o a_o live_a member_n of_o christ_n body_n nor_o a_o fruitful_a branch_n of_o this_o vine_n let_v he_o by_o no_o mean_n beguile_v himself_o nor_o suffer_v any_o form_n of_o seem_a goodness_n that_o he_o have_v in_o other_o thing_n to_o make_v he_o conceive_v well_o of_o himself_o he_o be_v doubtless_o a_o halter_n and_o christ_n jesus_n will_v reject_v he_o at_o last_o but_o he_o that_o have_v many_o sin_n see_v they_o acknowledge_v they_o to_o god_n have_v his_o soul_n trouble_v at_o they_o and_o desire_v rather_o than_o his_o life_n to_o be_v free_v of_o they_o and_o become_v exceed_o base_a in_o his_o own_o feel_n because_o of_o they_o still_o cast_v himself_o upon_o god_n gracious_a and_o free_a favour_n in_o christ_n for_o pardon_n of_o they_o may_v be_v and_o be_v a_o fruitful_a branch_n though_o he_o have_v a_o thousand_o sin_n of_o infirmity_n in_o he_o yea_o though_o he_o be_v overcome_v of_o tentation_n to_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n again_o and_o again_o let_v not_o the_o devil_n abuse_v any_o of_o you_o to_o make_v he_o less_o careful_a of_o lament_v and_o oppose_v and_o be_v humble_v under_o his_o sin_n because_o he_o hear_v he_o may_v be_v a_o good_a christian_a and_o partake_v of_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n for_o all_o they_o for_o in_o so_o abuse_v this_o comfort_n you_o shall_v make_v yourselves_o uncapable_a of_o this_o comfort_n because_o it_o belong_v alone_o to_o those_o that_o so_o have_v sin_v as_o they_o be_v trouble_v vex_a and_o disquiet_v with_o it_o as_o with_o the_o break_n of_o a_o leg_n or_o arm_n and_o do_v even_o make_v haste_n to_o the_o bind_n of_o their_o soul_n up_o again_o by_o the_o renew_n of_o their_o repentance_n indeed_o the_o hypocrite_n if_o he_o can_v once_o get_v a_o conceit_n fasten_v in_o he_o that_o though_o he_o do_v commit_v such_o a_o sin_n yet_o he_o may_v go_v to_o heaven_n well_o enough_o for_o all_o that_o he_o think_v himself_o safe_a and_o be_v little_a careful_a to_o oppose_v or_o bewail_v that_o sin_n which_o he_o conceit_n will_v not_o damn_v he_o but_o the_o true_a and_o the_o thief_n that_o have_v be_v fright_v once_o or_o twice_o with_o the_o narrow_a escape_n of_o hang_v may_v cease_v to_o give_v himself_o over_o to_o thievery_n and_o the_o man_n who_o age_n and_o bodily_a decay_n do_v not_o serve_v the_o turn_n to_o perform_v his_o unchaste_a pleasure_n may_v cease_v to_o follow_v harlot_n and_o so_o in_o other_o like_o particular_n this_o depart_n reformation_n but_o if_o any_o man_n do_v find_v himself_o cleanse_v in_o soul_n from_o the_o love_n and_o like_n of_o all_o know_a evil_n proportionable_o that_o what_o by_o the_o word_n what_o by_o affliction_n or_o such_o like_a mean_n he_o have_v be_v make_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o more_o corruption_n in_o himself_o than_o ever_o before_o he_o think_v to_o have_v be_v there_o and_o see_v god_n hand_n though_o not_o a_o total_a release_n from_o these_o corruption_n yet_o a_o great_a decay_n of_o they_o and_o a_o far_o great_a ability_n to_o leave_v they_o then_o in_o former_a time_n
