nourish_v to_o a_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a life_n use_v 1_o the_o use_v first_o it_o shall_v teach_v we_o that_o see_v it_o be_v a_o feast_n for_o our_o soul_n therefore_o we_o shall_v use_v it_o as_o a_o spiritual_a feast_n and_o how_o be_v that_o we_o must_v bring_v spiritual_a mouth_n and_o spiritual_a stomach_n and_o spiritual_a preparation_n and_o spiritual_a affection_n we_o must_v be_v whole_o spiritual_a our_o mouth_n be_v our_o mind_n or_o our_o soul_n our_o stomach_n or_o appetite_n must_v be_v hungry_a and_o thirst_n after_o grace_n and_o righteousness_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o newness_n of_o life_n our_o preparation_n must_v be_v humbleness_n of_o mind_n and_o brokennesse_n of_o heart_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o our_o own_o wretched_a estate_n and_o faith_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o save_v grace_n for_o our_o deliverance_n it_o make_v no_o matter_n when_o we_o come_v to_o this_o feast_n whether_o we_o have_v our_o best_a clothes_n on_o or_o no_o he_o be_v best_o welcome_n that_o come_v with_o the_o best_a heart_n and_o the_o best_a soul_n for_o whosoever_o come_v not_o thus_o prepare_v want_v his_o wedding-garment_n and_o shall_v speed_v as_o he_o do_v he_o shall_v be_v cast_v into_o utter_a darkness_n last_o our_o affection_n must_v be_v spiritual_a our_o mirth_n and_o cheerfulness_n and_o joy_n must_v not_o be_v any_o carnal_a joy_n or_o corporal_a rejoice_v as_o at_o our_o bodily_a feast_n but_o we_o must_v rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n rejoice_v in_o the_o spirit_n rejoice_v in_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o his_o salvation_n use_v time_n heretofore_o as_o at_o a_o spiritual_a feast_n have_v we_o hunger_v and_o thirst_v after_o the_o spiritual_a refresh_n of_o our_o soul_n have_v our_o soul_n be_v fat_v with_o these_o junket_n god_n have_v set_v before_o we_o have_v we_o have_v faith_n in_o the_o promise_v of_o god_n have_v we_o have_v repentance_n of_o our_o sin_n have_v we_o prepare_v ourselves_o in_o the_o inwardman_n for_o the_o entertainment_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n into_o our_o heart_n have_v we_o be_v refresh_v with_o the_o comfort_n of_o god_n have_v we_o delight_v in_o the_o salvation_n that_o hereby_o be_v bring_v unto_o we_o have_v we_o have_v a_o inward_a joy_n and_o cheerfulness_n of_o heart_n that_o we_o have_v find_v christ_n the_o lord_n and_o master_n of_o the_o feast_n have_v bid_v we_o welcome_n that_o we_o be_v better_o encourage_v to_o go_v on_o in_o godly_a duty_n more_o confirm_v in_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o more_o thorough_o resolve_v to_o lead_v a_o new_a life_n that_o we_o have_v well_o profit_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n if_o we_o find_v these_o thing_n we_o plain_o show_v that_o we_o have_v make_v it_o a_o spiritual_a banquet_n and_o that_o thereby_o our_o soul_n be_v nourish_v to_o a_o heavenly_a life_n if_o we_o find_v none_o of_o these_o thing_n at_o least_o in_o some_o measure_n let_v we_o know_v that_o we_o have_v come_v like_o brute_n beast_n or_o at_o least_o like_o carnal_a man_n we_o have_v better_o have_v keep_v away_o if_o we_o have_v come_v only_o with_o bodily_a and_o not_o with_o spiritual_a eye_n let_v we_o know_v we_o have_v commit_v a_o grievous_a sin_n against_o god_n we_o come_v here_o to_o receive_v a_o general_a quittance_n for_o our_o sin_n past_a and_o we_o have_v add_v a_o great_a sin_n than_o ever_o we_o commit_v before_o let_v we_o therefore_o examine_v ourselves_o and_o lay_v up_o these_o thing_n in_o our_o heart_n to_o meditate_v upon_o they_o so_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o temptation_n the_o best_a help_n and_o strength_n we_o have_v be_v christ_n crucify_v rev._n 12.11_o they_o overcome_v satan_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o lamb_n when_o by_o this_o outward_a pledge_n even_o so_o it_o be_v between_o christ_n and_o the_o soul_n of_o every_o faithful_a man_n and_o woman_n we_o do_v not_o enjoy_v the_o bodily_a presence_n of_o christ_n because_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n nay_o sometime_o he_o withdraw_v his_o sensible_a presence_n of_o his_o spirit_n from_o we_o yet_o we_o know_v there_o be_v a_o covenant_n make_v between_o he_o and_o we_o he_o be_v our_o husband_n and_o we_o his_o spouse_n he_o make_v one_o with_o we_o and_o we_o with_o he_o and_o though_o he_o do_v absent_a himself_o from_o we_o yet_o we_o comfort_v ourselves_o in_o this_o union_n because_o we_o be_v convert_v unto_o god_n and_o so_o this_o communion_n be_v make_v between_o christ_n
and_o we_o and_o we_o know_v that_o he_o be_v faithful_a and_o true_a and_o will_v never_o break_v his_o word_n i_o but_o in_o the_o participation_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n here_o be_v a_o seal_n and_o a_o pledge_n of_o his_o love_n whereby_o this_o communion_n be_v further_o ratify_v when_o we_o come_v there_o then_o the_o faith_n which_o before_o lay_v hide_v in_o we_o that_o begin_v to_o another_o matter_n of_o instruction_n be_v this_o that_o when_o we_o be_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n there_o be_v a_o near_a bond_n now_o between_o christ_n and_o we_o then_o there_o be_v before_o here_o be_v a_o near_a bond_n at_o least_o we_o be_v more_o near_a seal_v and_o tie_v to_o christ_n and_o he_o to_o we_o than_o before_o and_o why_o because_o it_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o the_o people_n the_o bread_n but_o not_o the_o cup_n the_o cup_n which_o we_o bless_v say_v the_o apostle_n be_v it_o not_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o bread_n which_o we_o break_v be_v it_o not_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n take_v this_o for_o a_o rule_n wheresoever_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v handle_v where_o it_o be_v not_o handle_v but_o by_o the_o way_n there_o they_o be_v both_o use_v sometime_o it_o be_v do_v by_o the_o bread_n only_o and_o sometime_o by_o the_o cup_n but_o where_o it_o be_v of_o purpose_n treat_v of_o there_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o be_v both_o speak_v of_o use_v 4_o the_o next_o use_n be_v it_o so_o 〈◊〉_d there_o be_v such_o a_o communion_n between_o christ_n and_o we_o then_o it_o teach_v we_o this_o that_o every_o one_o of_o we_o shall_v so_o fit_v and_o prepare_v ourselves_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n even_o as_o if_o we_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o very_a body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n if_o christ_n shall_v enter_v into_o we_o bodily_a than_o we_o will_v make_v we_o as_o clean_o as_o we_o can_v and_o shall_v we_o not_o much_o more_o when_o he_o come_v to_o enter_v into_o we_o spiritual_o and_o to_o say_v with_o the_o centurion_n lord_n i_o be_o not_o worthy_a that_o thou_o shall_v enter_v under_o my_o roof_n so_o every_o one_o of_o we_o shall_v make_v all_o preparation_n to_o give_v entertainment_n to_o such_o a_o
the_o proportion_n between_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v require_v as_o much_o what_o be_v signify_v by_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o they_o have_v a_o active_a power_n and_o virtue_n to_o cherish_v and_o nourish_v our_o fowl_n to_o eternal_a life_n and_o therefore_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n must_v be_v such_o in_o the_o sacrament_n as_o have_v power_n also_o to_o nourish_v the_o body_n to_o a_o temporal_a life_n but_o if_o only_a the_o show_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v there_o present_a then_o there_o be_v no_o power_n to_o nourish_v for_o it_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o bread_n that_o yield_v power_n by_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n to_o sustain_v life_n the_o maintenance_n of_o our_o life_n arise_v oft_o as_o you_o eat_v it_o you_o show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v we_o have_v begin_v with_o the_o part_n of_o it_o already_o and_o therein_o we_o have_v show_v how_o that_o the_o apostle_n describe_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n set_v it_o forth_o by_o the_o use_n of_o it_o not_o by_o have_v of_o it_o or_o by_o have_v access_n to_o it_o but_o by_o have_v the_o use_n of_o it_o by_o eat_v the_o bread_n and_o drink_v the_o cup._n thence_o we_o note_v that_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n consist_v in_o matter_n of_o action_n and_o use_n then_o again_o we_o note_v in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n as_o they_o be_v in_o use_n in_o the_o sacrament_n he_o call_v they_o by_o their_o ordinary_a name_n the_o bread_n by_o the_o name_n of_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n by_o the_o name_n of_o cup_n from_o hence_o we_o gather_v this_o doctrine_n that_o even_o after_o the_o word_n of_o consecration_n and_o blessing_n still_o the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n for_o their_o nature_n and_o substance_n be_v the_o same_o as_o they_o be_v before_o still_o they_o remain_v bread_n and_o wine_n so_o far_o we_o proceed_v now_o we_o be_v to_o proceed_v further_o three_o than_o we_o be_v here_o to_o consider_v that_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v of_o these_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n as_o they_o be_v in_o use_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n he_o set_v they_o forth_o by_o a_o note_n of_o excellency_n this_o bread_n and_o this_o cup_n for_o by_o the_o cup_n be_v mean_v wine_n as_o oft_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n he_o set_v they_o forth_o by_o a_o note_n of_o excellency_n as_o in_o all_o thing_n we_o must_v keep_v a_o mean_a without_o go_v too_o far_o or_o come_v too_o short_a so_o special_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n we_o must_v be_v sure_a to_o keep_v on_o the_o right_a way_n without_o turn_v either_o to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o to_o the_o left_a we_o must_v take_v all_o matter_n of_o religion_n in_o that_o very_a precise_a and_o true_a strain_n that_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v set_v upon_o they_o we_o be_v apt_a enough_o to_o err_v as_o well_o on_o the_o one_o side_n as_o on_o the_o other_o as_o well_o on_o the_o right_a side_n as_o on_o the_o left_a and_o to_o err_v on_o either_o side_n be_v alike_o dangerous_a so_o it_o be_v in_o other_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o our_o estimation_n of_o these_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n that_o be_v in_o use_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n some_o do_v err_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n in_o their_o estimation_n of_o they_o think_v too_o high_o of_o they_o as_o the_o papist_n do_v that_o the_o bread_n be_v corporal_o the_o very_a body_n of_o christ_n that_o the_o wine_n be_v corporal_o the_o very_a blood_n of_o christ_n on_o the_o other_o side_n other_o there_o be_v that_o err_v on_o the_o left_a hand_n in_o their_o estimation_n of_o they_o they_o esteem_v too_o mean_o and_o base_o of_o they_o as_o the_o profane_a people_n of_o the_o world_n they_o general_o esteem_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n at_o the_o lord_n table_n no_o better_a than_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n at_o their_o own_o table_n to_o meet_v with_o both_o these_o error_n and_o so_o to_o keep_v our_o heart_n upright_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o god_n truth_n herein_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o short_a speech_n give_v we_o a_o good_a caveat_n and_o preservative_n and_o first_o that_o we_o may_v not_o think_v too_o high_o of_o they_o and_o so_o err_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n as_o the_o papist_n do_v the_o apostle_n still_o call_v they_o bread_n and_o wine_n show_v that_o in_o the_o nature_n and_o substance_n of_o they_o they_o be_v the_o same_o as_o they_o be_v before_o next_o that_o we_o may_v not_o err_v on_o the_o left_a hand_n and_o think_v too_o mean_o and_o base_o of_o they_o as_o the_o profane_a people_n do_v he_o extol_v they_o by_o a_o note_n of_o excellency_n this_o bread_n and_o this_o wine_n though_o the_o bread_n be_v but_o bread_n in_o itself_o and_o the_o wine_n be_v but_o wine_n in_o itself_o yet_o he_o speak_v with_o a_o kind_n of_o grace_n and_o majesty_n of_o speech_n this_o bread_n &_o this_o cup_n as_o single_v they_o out_o by_o a_o note_n of_o difference_n from_o ordinary_a bread_n &_o wine_n because_o they_o be_v dedicate_v to_o a_o sacred_a and_o holy_a use_n whereby_o they_o be_v advance_v above_o all_o other_o bread_n and_o wine_n whatsoever_o as_o oft_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n say_v the_o apostle_n you_o show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v the_o doctrine_n hence_o to_o be_v raise_v be_v this_o namely_o that_o howsoever_o it_o be_v that_o the_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n that_o be_v use_v in_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v in_o nature_n and_o in_o substance_n the_o same_o creature_n as_o they_o be_v before_o yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o same_o sacred_a and_o holy_a use_n that_o they_o be_v consecrate_v and_o dedicate_v unto_o to_o be_v make_v part_n of_o the_o sacrament_n in_o this_o respect_n they_o be_v thing_n of_o far_o great_a excellency_n than_o all_o ordinary_a thing_n of_o that_o kind_n be_v this_o bread_n be_v far_o more_o excellent_a bread_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o use_n of_o it_o than_o any_o other_o and_o this_o wine_n be_v far_o more_o excellent_a wine_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o use_n of_o it_o than_o any_o other_o this_o be_v the_o reach_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o that_o he_o speak_v so_o emphatical_o this_o bread_n and_o this_o cup._n mark_v the_o doctrine_n howsoever_o it_o be_v that_o the_o element_n of_o bread_n &_o wine_n that_o be_v use_v in_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v in_o nature_n and_o substance_n the_o same_o creature_n as_o they_o be_v before_o yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o sacred_a and_o holy_a use_n that_o they_o be_v consecrate_v and_o dedicate_v unto_o to_o be_v make_v part_n of_o the_o sacrament_n in_o this_o respect_n they_o be_v far_o more_o excellent_a than_o any_o other_o ordinary_a creature_n of_o that_o kind_n this_o bread_n be_v more_o excellent_a than_o any_o other_o bread_n and_o this_o wine_n dedicate_v to_o this_o use_n be_v far_o more_o excellent_a than_o any_o
