the_o life_n of_o grace_n or_o holiness_n be_v no_o substantial_a life_n such_o as_o the_o vegetative_a sensitive_a or_o rational_a life_n or_o soul_n be_v which_o be_v a_o four_o error_n and_o be_v indeed_o the_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o other_o three_o abovementioned_a otherwise_o it_o may_v be_v think_v no_o materal_a thing_n nor_o worth_a the_o while_n to_o contend_v whether_o the_o seed_n and_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n be_v a_o substance_n or_o accident_n it_o seem_v rather_o to_o be_v a_o question_n of_o philosophy_n and_o so_o not_o needful_a to_o be_v determine_v the_o one_o way_n or_o the_o other_o by_o they_o who_o meddle_v not_o in_o such_o matter_n but_o i_o say_v this_o make_v the_o thing_n the_o more_o needful_a to_o be_v open_v because_o the_o other_o three_o error_n and_o divers_a other_o be_v build_v on_o it_o for_o say_v they_o if_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v denominate_v it_o according_a to_o its_o own_o quality_n or_o property_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v holy_a righteous_a pure_a etc._n etc._n because_o the_o seed_n be_v such_o also_o it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v be_v in_o union_n therewith_o because_o the_o essence_n or_o be_v of_o every_o accident_n consist_v in_o its_o be_v in_o union_n with_o its_o subject_n but_o say_v they_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o accident_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n now_o the_o first_o proposition_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v certain_a and_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o the_o second_o be_v false_a which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o divers_a other_o gross_a error_n and_o so_o their_o whole_a superstructure_n false_a and_o for_o the_o refutation_n of_o it_o and_o the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o truth_n viz._n that_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o substance_n and_o the_o life_n of_o holiness_n and_o grace_n be_v substantial_a i_o shall_v noâ—_n enter_v into_o philosophical_a nicety_n but_o produce_v a_o few_o plain_a argument_n obvious_a to_o any_o clear_a and_o sound_a understanding_n as_o 1._o even_o as_o we_o do_v infer_v from_o the_o variety_n and_o nobility_n of_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o rational_a life_n and_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n and_o no_o accident_n so_o both_o from_o the_o great_a variety_n and_o also_o the_o great_a nobility_n much_o great_a than_o that_o of_o the_o rational_a soul_n or_o life_n of_o its_o operation_n we_o conclude_v that_o it_o to_o wit_n the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o substance_n 2._o it_o be_v the_o root_n and_o spâ—ing_n of_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o we_o see_v hear_v taste_n savour_n and_o feel_v spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a object_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n 3._o and_o see_v it_o be_v common_o grant_v that_o the_o life_n of_o vegetation_n the_o life_n of_o sensation_n the_o life_n of_o reason_n be_v all_o substance_n shall_v we_o deny_v that_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n or_o holiness_n which_o be_v far_o above_o all_o these_o life_n and_o do_v pass_o excel_v they_o yea_o be_v the_o very_a crown_n and_o glory_n of_o man_n be_v a_o substance_n 4._o when_o god_n make_v man_n he_o accident_n 5._o this_o seed_n and_o that_o by_o which_o it_o be_v nourish_v god_n give_v from_o heaven_n as_o the_o scripture_n do_v plain_o declare_v therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v not_o come_v from_o heaven_n because_o the_o maxim_n be_v a_o accident_n can_v pass_v from_o one_o subject_n into_o another_o 6._o it_o be_v call_v oft_o in_o scripture_n the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o flesh_n blood_n which_o the_o soul_n feed_v upon_o it_o become_v clothe_v therewith_o as_o with_o a_o body_n and_o thereby_o dwell_v in_o christ_n and_o live_v in_o he_o as_o the_o branch_n in_o the_o vine_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n and_o have_v a_o substantial_a life_n and_o spirit_n for_o what_o a_o absurd_a thing_n be_v it_o to_o call_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n a_o accident_n 7._o the_o saint_n feel_v it_o in_o they_o as_o real_o to_o be_v a_o part_n or_o particle_n of_o the_o very_a substance_n of_o heaven_n viz._n of_o that_o spiritual_a and_o invisile_a heaven_n where_o the_o saint_n live_v as_o they_o do_v feel_v the_o body_n of_o their_o outward_a man_n to_o be_v a_o part_n or_o particle_n of_o the_o sustance_n of_o this_o outward_a world_n 8._o it_o receive_v the_o name_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v substance_n but_o never_o the_o name_n of_o a_o accident_n in_o scripture_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n but_o some_o may_v say_v that_o by_o this_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o we_o judge_v the_o sâ—ed_z and_o divine_a birth_n as_o we_o call_v it_o not_o only_o a_o substance_n but_o that_o it_o natural_a seed_n and_o birth_n have_v its_o body_n and_o pirit_n so_o have_v this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o it_o be_v the_o body_n that_o be_v the_o vessel_n which_o contain_v or_o convey_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o the_o seed_n of_o corn_n have_v its_o spirit_n or_o virtue_n in_o its_o body_n and_o so_o every_o other_o seed_n and_o herb_n and_o tree_n of_o the_o field_n as_o the_o appletree_n the_o vine-tree_n who_o fruit_n have_v both_o body_n and_o spirit_n as_o wine_n have_v its_o spirit_n and_o so_o any_o other_o liquor_n which_o evaporate_v or_o extract_v leave_v its_o body_n dead_a so_o this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o vine_n have_v its_o body_n and_o spirit_n contain_v in_o it_o manifold_a most_o noble_a and_o excellent_a power_n and_o virtue_n which_o spirit_n be_v a_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o soul_n of_o christ_n the_o heavenly_a man._n and_o thus_o have_v get_v through_o this_o particular_a i_o pass_v unto_o another_o which_o be_v to_o show_v that_o regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o infusion_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n into_o the_o soul_n for_o indeed_o as_o it_o be_v in_o natural_a seed_n and_o birth_n so_o be_v it_o here_o in_o the_o seed_n may_v be_v cast_v into_o the_o womb_n and_o by_o some_o impediment_n no_o conception_n follow_v and_o in_o the_o very_a conceive_n may_v be_v mar_v and_o indeed_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v plain_a how_o that_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o kingdom_n after_o it_o be_v sow_v spring_v up_o like_o the_o corn_n which_o may_v be_v choke_v by_o impediment_n but_o where_o it_o be_v not_o choke_v it_o spring_v up_o first_o to_o the_o blade_n than_o the_o ear_n then_o to_o the_o full_a corn_n and_o that_o be_v its_o generation_n now_o â—hen_o a_o thing_n be_v but_o in_o the_o seeâ—_n the_o life_n spirit_n and_o power_n or_o virtue_n of_o its_o nature_n be_v hide_v and_o as_o it_o be_v bury_v within_o the_o body_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o because_o the_o seed_n have_v not_o a_o body_n so_o large_a nor_o so_o organise_v as_o they_o require_v therefore_o they_o do_v not_o appear_v till_o it_o have_v receive_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o large_a and_o organise_v body_n and_o the_o more_o the_o body_n grow_v up_o and_o become_v organise_v its_o spirit_n life_n and_o power_n do_v manifest_v themselves_o more_o and_o more_o which_o in_o the_o seed_n lie_v as_o it_o be_v dead_a and_o bury_v and_o altogether_o unable_a to_o perform_v their_o operation_n as_o be_v confine_v as_o in_o fetter_n in_o so_o narrow_a a_o room_n yea_o further_o their_o be_v be_v so_o
not_o apprehend_v nor_o acknowledge_v that_o that_o birth_n have_v any_o thing_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n more_o than_o the_o birth_n of_o any_o other_o man_n which_o i_o say_v it_o have_v according_a to_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n give_v i_o concern_v it_o and_o this_o be_v demonstrable_a also_o from_o scripture_n â—_o but_o i_o shall_v soon_o put_v a_o end_n to_o both_o these_o reason_n and_o yet_o also_o speak_v or_o declare_v free_o that_o which_o be_v give_v i_o concern_v the_o same_o and_o in_o plainness_n so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v admit_v i_o say_v then_o that_o neither_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o conceive_v or_o bear_v in_o this_o birth_n nor_o yet_o be_v it_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n thereof_o for_o i_o confess_v to_o say_v in_o it_o and_o that_o substantial_o and_o in_o its_o very_a nature_n somewhat_o above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n what_o can_v it_o be_v but_o the_o godhead_n itself_o i_o answer_v yea_o frequent_v the_o assembly_n of_o god_n people_n where_o the_o lord_n be_v wait_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v and_o live_a worship_n prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n be_v offer_v up_o unto_o he_o in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n now_o the_o reason_n why_o i_o have_v not_o so_o particular_o mention_v these_o thing_n be_v not_o any_o wilful_a omission_n or_o neglect_n as_o if_o i_o do_v not_o lay_v any_o weight_n upon_o these_o thing_n or_o make_v any_o â—light_n of_o any_o of_o they_o nay_o all_o this_o be_v and_o be_v far_o from_o i_o but_o my_o design_n be_v only_o in_o short_a and_o as_o brief_o as_o well_o can_v be_v to_o point_v at_o some_o general_a thing_n and_o also_o at_o these_o particular_n which_o be_v the_o main_a and_o be_v the_o most_o necessary_a for_o the_o right_n and_o acceptable_a performance_n of_o those_o other_o thing_n above_o mention_v my_o great_a care_n be_v to_o lâ—â—_n the_o foundation_n well_o and_o to_o put_v my_o reader_n in_o mind_n of_o the_o first_o and_o most_o necessary_a thing_n which_o i_o â—id_v find_v so_o much_o neglect_v by_o most_o of_o professor_n of_o christianity_n my_o end_n single_o be_v that_o people_n may_v be_v bring_v to_o have_v the_o true_a nature_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christianity_n to_o abound_v and_o have_v place_n in_o they_o and_o then_o all_o these_o other_o thing_n will_v easy_o and_o natural_o follow_v and_o i_o can_v not_o well_o mention_v these_o thing_n without_o have_v insist_v more_o large_o upon_o they_o than_o the_o nature_n of_o so_o small_a a_o treatise_n will_v admit_v for_o i_o do_v not_o design_n a_o complete_a system_fw-la of_o practical_a divinity_n but_o only_o as_o it_o be_v to_o put_v a_o primar_n or_o rudiment_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o young_a beginner_n and_o as_o for_o many_o of_o the_o above_o mention_v particular_n they_o be_v general_o acknowledge_v among_o all_o that_o profess_v the_o name_n of_o christ._n but_o yet_o the_o right_a hear_n the_o right_a read_n the_o right_a meditate_v the_o right_a preach_n the_o right_a pray_v and_o sing_v either_o private_a or_o public_a the_o right_a give_v of_o alm_n the_o right_a visit_v of_o the_o sick_a the_o prisoner_n the_o fatherless_a and_o widow_n and_o the_o right_n practise_v of_o all_o other_o christian_a duty_n be_v a_o great_a and_o rare_a thing_n and_o few_o there_o be_v among_o those_o call_v christian_n who_o do_v indeed_o right_o practice_v they_o and_o go_v about_o they_o now_o though_o all_o these_o and_o other_o particular_n be_v not_o express_o mention_v in_o this_o treatise_n yet_o the_o right_a manner_n and_o way_n how_o they_o be_v to_o be_v go_v about_o and_o perform_v be_v not_o only_o express_v here_o but_o it_o be_v the_o main_a design_n of_o the_o whole_a and_o that_o be_v that_o people_n may_v come_v to_o know_v the_o true_a life_n of_o god_n and_o of_o godliness_n to_o live_v in_o they_o and_o the_o true_a spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o christianity_n to_o reign_v and_o rule_v in_o they_o and_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o order_n and_o guide_v and_o enable_v they_o that_o so_o whatsoever_o they_o do_v they_o may_v do_v it_o in_o the_o life_n in_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o power_n in_o the_o light_n and_o in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o then_o they_o do_v it_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n and_o in_o faith_n and_o so_o they_o do_v it_o aright_o and_o it_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o god_n and_o serviceable_a unto_o man_n there_o be_v one_o thing_n further_o which_o i_o can_v well_o omit_v and_o that_o be_v to_o answer_v a_o objection_n which_o may_v be_v strong_a in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o who_o have_v not_o experience_n in_o the_o case_n that_o whereas_o i_o recommend_v so_o much_o the_o place_n of_o silence_n and_o of_o be_v so_o passive_a still_o and_o quiet_a to_o wait_v for_o and_o attend_v unto_o the_o divine_a work_n and_o move_v of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v like_o some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v that_o obj._n such_o a_o thing_n lead_v into_o a_o stupidity_n or_o lethargy_n of_o mind_n if_o not_o into_o something_o worse_o
i_o shall_v be_v turn_v but_o now_o many_o when_o the_o lord_n touch_v they_o and_o by_o his_o touch_n infuse_v a_o certain_a secret_a virtue_n sufficient_a to_o turn_v they_o or_o whereby_o they_o may_v turn_v yea_o when_o he_o draw_v and_o pull_v they_o very_o sensible_o do_v resist_v and_o continue_v in_o their_o aversion_n and_o of_o such_o the_o scripture_n say_v they_o draw_v back_o and_o soul_n but_o of_o both_o viz._n the_o understanding_n and_o will_n yea_o of_o the_o whole_a soul_n with_o all_o its_o power_n when_o the_o conversion_n be_v through_o and_o total_a chap._n iii_o show_v how_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n towards_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o effect_n which_o follow_v at_o first_o thereupon_o as_o also_o of_o the_o inward_a trial_n and_o trouble_n it_o usual_o meet_v with_o therein_o now_o after_o the_o soul_n have_v get_v itself_o convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o divine_a influence_n and_o assistance_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n present_v therein_o than_o it_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a that_o it_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o the_o lord_n who_o by_o his_o divine_a grace_n have_v enable_v it_o to_o convert_v after_o the_o former_a manner_n do_v and_o will_v also_o enable_v it_o to_o persevere_v therein_o for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o application_n unto_o the_o divine_a word_n light_n and_o life_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n that_o it_o come_v to_o receive_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o bless_a effect_n thereof_o a_o outward_a example_n whereof_o we_o have_v very_o plain_a in_o our_o hold_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o fire_n which_o if_o sudden_o we_o remove_v again_o it_o scarce_o produce_v any_o effect_n in_o it_o as_o if_o we_o will_v purify_v or_o refine_v any_o metal_n from_o its_o dross_n by_o the_o fire_n we_o must_v not_o only_o apply_v it_o intimate_o to_o the_o fire_n but_o hold_v it_o in_o it_o a_o good_a time_n that_o it_o may_v melt_v and_o the_o dross_n may_v separate_v from_o it_o so_o thou_o must_v not_o only_o turn_v thy_o soul_n to_o this_o fire_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o but_o must_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o so_o do_v and_o by_o that_o mean_v thou_o will_v quick_o begin_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o its_o bless_a effect_n some_o of_o which_o effect_n as_o they_o follow_v at_o first_o upon_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v unto_o this_o divine_a principle_n i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o mention_v as_o first_o thou_o will_v by_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o receive_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o full_a convincement_n and_o discovery_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o sinful_a pollute_a nature_n then_o former_o so_o that_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o see_v sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a and_o how_o thou_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o it_o as_o with_o a_o thick_a cloud_n which_o hinder_v thou_o from_o enjoy_v the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a presence_n of_o god_n yea_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o feel_v thy_o poor_a soul_n embody_a or_o incorporate_v in_o a_o very_a body_n of_o sin_n have_v many_o member_n and_o how_o near_o and_o dear_o they_o be_v unto_o thou_o some_o as_o a_o right_a eye_n some_o as_o a_o right_a hand_n etc._n etc._n then_o thou_o will_v know_v that_o such_o thing_n be_v sin_n which_o have_v place_n in_o thou_o more_o than_o by_o any_o word_n even_o of_o scripture_n for_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o little_a seed_n will_v great_o convince_v thou_o thereof_o and_o let_v thou_o see_v thy_o sin_n and_o the_o nature_n or_o root_n that_o bring_v they_o forth_o in_o their_o monstrous_a and_o hellish_a form_n and_o shape_n ii_o thou_o will_v also_o feel_v and_o perceive_v how_o the_o displeasure_n wrath_n and_o indignation_n of_o god_n be_v against_o every_o sin_n in_o thou_o even_o all_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n the_o whole_a body_n of_o it_o with_o all_o its_o member_n root_n and_o fruit_n and_o branch_n and_o how_o also_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v against_o man_n because_o of_o sin_n to_o which_o they_o be_v join_v and_o so_o thou_o will_v find_v how_o all_o man_n in_o a_o sinful_a and_o unrenewed_a condition_n be_v miserable_a as_o be_v under_o the_o wrath_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o this_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n after_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n which_o will_v raise_v in_o thy_o mind_n amaze_a and_o astonish_a thought_n whereby_o thou_o will_v wonder_v and_o admire_v that_o thou_o be_v not_o consume_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o this_o wrath_n yea_o than_o thou_o will_v be_v make_v to_o see_v somewhat_o like_o that_o of_o moses_n how_o will_v find_v it_o as_o a_o sword_n a_o fire_n and_o a_o hammer_n in_o thou_o knock_v down_o and_o kill_v and_o consume_v this_o body_n of_o sin_n with_o its_o member_n yea_o a_o flame_n will_v issue_v forth_o from_o it_o and_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n kill_v and_o burn_v so_o far_o as_o it_o enter_v vi_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o this_o heavenly_a fire_n thou_o will_v find_v a_o very_a sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n in_o thy_o inward_a man_n as_o very_o as_o if_o the_o outward_a fire_n be_v burn_v in_o thy_o outward_a body_n so_o thou_o may_v conceive_v how_o thou_o will_v be_v affect_v if_o the_o tender_a and_o most_o sensible_a part_n of_o thy_o outward_a body_n be_v hold_v close_o unto_o a_o burn_a flame_n even_o such_o sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n will_v thou_o find_v inward_o for_o indeed_o thy_o soul_n dwell_v as_o real_o in_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o be_v unite_v with_o it_o as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o outward_a body_n therefore_o it_o be_v sensible_a of_o whatever_o hurt_v it_o and_o findeth_z pain_n till_o it_o have_v put_v it_o off_o and_o then_o it_o have_v no_o more_o sympathy_n with_o it_o vii_o great_a fear_n and_o to_o become_v a_o fire_n in_o it_o which_o by_o its_o operation_n produce_v some_o beginning_n of_o a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o holy_a life_n as_o aforesaid_a but_o notwithstanding_o that_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v common_o acknowledge_v both_o by_o papist_n and_o protestant_n to_o be_v the_o foundation_n or_o ground_n work_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n as_o also_o that_o faith_n be_v the_o first_o step_n unto_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o spring_n and_o root_n of_o holy_a action_n yet_o how_o contrary_a unto_o this_o acknowledgement_n be_v not_o only_o the_o which_o be_v holy_a and_o spiritual_a exercise_n and_o can_v only_o be_v perform_v by_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o no_o otherwise_o their_o principle_n be_v this_o that_o even_o unbeliever_n and_o ungodly_a who_o have_v not_o the_o least_o measure_n or_o grain_n of_o save_a faith_n and_o holiness_n shall_v pray_v and_o sing_v psalm_n in_o the_o very_a state_n and_o frame_n they_o be_v in_o and_o that_o this_o be_v a_o probable_a way_n to_o attain_v unto_o holiness_n wrest_v and_o abuse_v that_o scripture_n to_o prove_v it_o by_o the_o father_n will_v give_v the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o they_o who_o ask_v he_o ask_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v but_o it_o be_v neither_o here_o nor_o elsewhere_o say_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o father_n will_v give_v it_o to_o they_o who_o ask_v in_o unbelief_n but_o plain_a contrary_a james_n say_v let_v not_o he_o that_o ask_v not_o in_o faith_n think_v that_o he_o shall_v receive_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o lord_n indeed_o i_o willing_o acknowledge_v all_o unbeliever_n and_o ungodly_a shall_v pray_v and_o worship_n god_n but_o i_o say_v it_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o order_n and_o way_n command_v of_o god_n and_o not_o as_o they_o practise_v viz._n they_o shall_v convert_v and_o pray_v repent_v and_o pray_v believe_v and_o pray_v etc._n etc._n for_o god_n have_v join_v these_o together_o and_o forbid_v that_o any_o man_n shall_v attempt_v to_o separate_v they_o yea_o they_o can_v be_v separate_v this_o woeful_a error_n both_o in_o their_o principle_n and_o practice_n be_v a_o most_o grievous_a let_v and_o impediment_n unto_o people_n attain_v unto_o holiness_n for_o as_o much_o as_o their_o pray_v and_o sing_v or_o any_o other_o exercise_n in_o relation_n to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n be_v not_o the_o true_a and_o real_a practice_n of_o religion_n but_o a_o mere_a counterfeit_a formality_n and_o show_n or_o imitation_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o true_a prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n can_v only_o common_o proceed_v from_o the_o true_a and_o real_a power_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n even_o as_o sing_v and_o write_v natural_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o power_n of_o a_o natural_a life_n and_o beside_o they_o most_o lamentable_o cheat_v their_o own_o soul_n for_o by_o these_o and_o such_o like_a operative_a exercise_n and_o practice_n which_o be_v but_o hypocritical_a formality_n and_o show_n as_o be_v say_v and_o through_o their_o continuance_n therein_o they_o acquire_v a_o certain_a natural_a habit_n or_o disposition_n more_o and_o more_o and_o easy_o and_o fine_o to_o perform_v they_o which_o natural_a habit_n they_o set_v up_o in_o their_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v as_o the_o great_a power_n of_o god_n or_o godliness_n and_o many_o no_o doubt_n apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v so_o so_o that_o when_o at_o any_o time_n they_o be_v act_v or_o enable_v to_o perform_v such_o and_o the_o like_a exercise_n somewhat_o more_o fine_o and_o easy_o than_o at_o first_o and_o with_o some_o heat_n perhaps_o in_o the_o imagination_n and_o inferior_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n they_o impuâ—e_v it_o to_o the_o very_a principle_n of_o godliness_n and_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o grow_v or_o advance_v christian_n in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n for_o by_o the_o power_n of_o this_o acquire_v habit_n they_o will_v find_v many_o time_n thought_n spring_v up_o into_o their_o understanding_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n which_o will_v seem_v unto_o they_o as_o divine_a contemplation_n and_o act_n of_o true_a adoration_n also_o by_o the_o same_o the_o affection_n will_v be_v stir_v sometime_o great_o and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o fire_n kindle_v in_o they_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o the_o spark_n of_o their_o own_o kindle_v and_o not_o that_o true_a divine_a and_o sacred_a fire_n aforemention_v which_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n however_o it_o may_v appear_v to_o they_o so_o to_o be_v such_o man_n be_v not_o unfit_o by_o some_o call_v habitualistae_fw-la or_o habitualist_n who_o go_v about_o to_o frame_v or_o form_n unto_o themselves_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n whereby_o to_o perform_v holy_a exercise_n through_o work_v themselves_o into_o a_o habit_n by_o such_o counterfeit_a and_o hypocritical_a action_n as_o aforesaid_a but_o true_a and_o real_a holiness_n be_v not_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o frequent_a work_n though_o never_o so_o sublime_a of_o the_o mere_a natural_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n neither_o be_v it_o a_o habit_n produce_v of_o these_o work_n but_o be_v a_o spiritual_a and_o supernatural_a power_n spring_v up_o from_o the_o divine_a seed_n as_o it_o come_v to_o take_v root_n and_o bud_n in_o the_o soul_n yet_o if_o we_o shall_v take_v a_o impartial_a view_n of_o that_o which_o be_v call_v and_o account_v holiness_n among_o professor_n common_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v no_o other_o but_o such_o a_o habit_n as_o be_v demonstrable_a from_o these_o two_o or_o three_o instance_n 1._o how_o have_v they_o come_v by_o this_o holiness_n be_v it_o by_o a_o true_a or_o real_a convert_n or_o turn_v in_o their_o mind_n unto_o the_o light_n and_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n inward_o reveal_v in_o they_o in_o the_o divine_a seed_n by_o which_o they_o feel_v the_o divine_a fire_n kindle_v in_o the_o very_a ground_n or_o bottom_n of_o their_o heart_n which_o purify_v a_o place_n in_o they_o for_o the_o divine_a teach_v they_o be_v nothing_o acquaint_v with_o these_o way_n of_o inward_a conversion_n or_o recollection_n of_o mind_n unto_o a_o divine_a principle_n in_o their_o soul_n objective_o present_a never_o expect_v nor_o look_v after_o it_o as_o judge_v it_o to_o be_v cease_v if_o so_o than_o i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o difference_n betwixt_o their_o pray_n or_o plough_v or_o write_v or_o sing_v common_a musical_a song_n or_o common_a purpose_n for_o the_o power_n of_o do_v both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o be_v but_o a_o habit_n acquire_v by_o natural_a work_n for_o such_o kind_n of_o action_n as_o to_o plough_v write_v sing_v require_v no_o other_o principle_n but_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o a_o man_n which_o at_o the_o first_o can_v begin_v to_o do_v a_o little_a and_o so_o by_o degree_n through_o repeat_v act_n acquire_v a_o habit_n which_o become_v a_o power_n in_o they_o to_o enable_v they_o the_o more_o ready_o and_o fine_o to_o perform_v they_o and_o with_o great_a ease_n a_o second_o instance_n be_v this_o that_o this_o power_n whereby_o they_o exercise_v themselves_o in_o the_o operative_a exercise_n as_o in_o pray_v sing_v preach_a or_o the_o like_a they_o can_v use_v in_o their_o own_o will_n and_o time_n they_o have_v it_o whole_o at_o their_o own_o dispose_n and_o can_v command_v it_o as_o they_o list_v pray_v when_o they_o will_v meditate_v and_o preach_v when_o they_o will_v which_o be_v a_o infallible_a instance_n that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o habit_n mere_o acquire_v by_o the_o onâ—y_a work_n
and_o unto_o this_o that_o maxim_n in_o natural_n do_v well_o answer_v esse_fw-la est_fw-la propter_fw-la operari_fw-la be_v be_v for_o work_v for_o to_o that_o end_n have_v every_o thing_n receive_v its_o be_v and_o power_n of_o a_o natural_a life_n that_o it_o may_v reduce_v they_o into_o act_n and_o perform_v the_o operation_n which_o be_v proper_a unto_o they_o so_o if_o we_o shall_v take_v a_o survey_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n and_o of_o all_o thing_n in_o it_o in_o the_o heaven_n the_o earth_n and_o the_o other_o element_n we_o shall_v find_v they_o all_o upon_o motion_n and_o work_v the_o work_n which_o belong_v unto_o the_o power_n of_o their_o natural_a be_v and_o thus_o the_o â—_z do_v in_o some_o sort_n resemble_v their_o maker_n who_o not_o only_o wrought_v the_o creature_n into_o a_o be_v by_o creation_n but_o continue_v still_o work_v to_o preserve_v uphold_v and_o govern_v they_o according_a to_o which_o the_o lord_n say_v my_o father_n work_v hitherto_o and_o i_o work_v now_o if_o thou_o have_v in_o any_o measure_n pass_v through_o the_o aforesaid_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o very_a small_a time_n thou_o be_v by_o this_o time_n become_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o so_o be_v enter_v at_o â—east_n into_o the_o way_n and_o path_n of_o holiness_n and_o be_v come_v unto_o a_o true_a and_o sound_a beginning_n be_v come_v unto_o chriâ—t_n who_o be_v the_o beginning_n and_o the_o end_n both_o the_o alpha_n and_o the_o omega_n the_o way_n the_o truth_n and_o the_o life_n the_o door_n into_o the_o sheep-fold_n and_o house_n of_o god_n so_o have_v enter_v by_o he_o thou_o be_v no_o intruder_n no_o thief_n nor_o robber_n but_o a_o true_a servant_n of_o the_o house_n of_o god_n wherein_o thou_o be_v to_o work_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v christ_n so_o must_v thou_o walk_v in_o he_o be_v now_o plant_v into_o he_o as_o the_o branch_n into_o the_o vine-tree_n and_o make_v a_o real_a partaker_n of_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o root_n and_o hereby_o join_v to_o the_o tree_n as_o a_o natural_a branch_n thou_o must_v now_o bring_v â—orth_o the_o fruit_n of_o good_a work_n and_o be_v come_v to_o live_v in_o the_o spirit_n thou_o must_v also_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o work_v and_o do_v all_o thy_o work_n in_o he_o and_o through_o he_o but_o some_o may_v say_v according_a to_o this_o method_n and_o way_n of_o proceed_v a_o man_n be_v keep_v long_o off_o from_o work_v for_o it_o may_v be_v a_o long_a time_n ere_o he_o pass_v through_o these_o step_n and_o so_o during_o this_o time_n suppose_v it_o be_v a_o year_n time_n or_o more_o shall_v he_o proceed_v to_o no_o operative_a exercise_n of_o religion_n but_o remain_v as_o a_o cypher_n or_o blank_n till_o he_o have_v get_v through_o these_o step_n may_v it_o not_o be_v say_v unto_o he_o why_o stand_v thou_o so_o long_o idle_a answ._n this_o be_v a_o objection_n which_o be_v much_o with_o many_o and_o have_v deep_a place_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o new_o convince_v one_o and_o who_o be_v but_o beginning_n they_o will_v fain_o be_v a_o do_v and_o work_v as_o other_o yea_o and_o the_o hypocritical_a part_n and_o spirit_n which_o have_v its_o life_n in_o dead_a performance_n and_o work_n will_v still_o be_v dog_v and_o prick_v they_o forward_o unto_o the_o do_n of_o thing_n before_o the_o time_n now_o learn_v a_o parable_n of_o a_o fruit-tree_n be_v it_o a_o appletree_n or_o the_o like_a into_o which_o a_o graft_n be_v imp_v be_v cut_v off_o from_o another_o tree_n where_o it_o do_v grow_v as_o a_o natural_a branch_n and_o do_v bud_n green_a and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n but_o such_o fruit_n as_o be_v naught_o now_o suppose_v that_o such_o be_v the_o good_a nature_n of_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v that_o it_o make_v the_o graft_n bring_v forth_o other_o sort_n of_o fruit_n than_o former_o even_o good_a fruit_n and_o that_o in_o abundance_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o common_a tree_n in_o the_o outward_a for_o they_o do_v not_o change_v the_o graft_n imp_v on_o they_o into_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o rather_o the_o imp_n change_v the_o sap_n and_o virtue_n of_o spirit_n of_o the_o tree_n that_o it_o cause_v the_o tree_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n according_a to_o the_o kind_n of_o the_o graft_n itself_o but_o it_o be_v otherwise_o betwixt_o châ—ist_n and_o we_o man_n for_o we_o be_v plant_v or_o graft_v into_o he_o he_o change_v the_o nature_n of_o our_o fruit_n from_o evil_a to_o good_a otherwise_o the_o comparison_n hold_v very_o well_o now_o when_o the_o graft_n be_v cut_v off_o from_o its_o natural_a stock_n it_o be_v very_o gâ—â—en_v and_o full_a of_o life_n yea_o suppose_v it_o be_v full_a of_o blossom_n or_o fruit_n yet_o when_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o husbandman_n it_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o its_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o do_v not_o instant_o spring_v and_o green_a and_o flourish_v as_o before_z far_o less_o bear_v new_a fruit_n but_o first_o of_o all_o die_v its_o greenness_n and_o flourish_n wither_v and_o its_o fruit_n fall_v off_o so_o that_o it_o remain_v very_o bare_a and_o empty-like_a for_o some_o time_n yet_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o altogether_o idle_a in_o it_o for_o by_o little_a and_o little_a the_o power_n of_o life_n in_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v ingraft_v do_v infuse_v and_o insinuate_v itself_o into_o it_o by_o which_o it_o unit_v and_o knit_v the_o graft_n to_o the_o tree_n by_o a_o natural_a union_n and_o then_o in_o process_n of_o time_n the_o graft_n begin_v to_o green_a and_o flourish_v again_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n both_o much_o better_a and_o more_o abundant_a as_o be_v say_v and_o here_o we_o may_v observe_v somewhat_o of_o all_o these_o step_n in_o a_o similitude_n which_o the_o graft_n pass_v through_o before_o it_o come_v to_o bear_v fruit_n as_o 1._o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n in_o the_o tree_n insinuate_v it_o self_n into_o the_o graft_n take_v hold_v of_o the_o faint_a and_o dead_a power_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o graft_n and_o convert_v or_o turn_v they_o into_o itself_o 2._o the_o graft_n be_v thus_o turn_v or_o join_v to_o the_o tree_n not_o by_o any_o outward_a bond_n but_o by_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o tree_n continue_v and_o persist_v therein_o which_o if_o it_o do_v not_o it_o can_v not_o receive_v life_n from_o the_o tree_n 3._o in_o this_o continuance_n it_o remain_v very_o passive_a do_v nothing_o but_o secret_o drink_v in_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o life_n from_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o so_o by_o this_o mean_v it_o become_v in_o due_a time_n as_o a_o natural_a branch_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o bring_v forth_o its_o fruit_n as_o aforesaid_a now_o such_o be_v the_o discretion_n of_o the_o husband_n man_n that_o he_o require_v not_o present_a fruit_n from_o the_o tree_n neither_o be_v he_o offend_v with_o it_o that_o it_o yield_v not_o present_a fruit_n but_o patient_o wait_v for_o the_o fruit_n in_o the_o season_n of_o it_o even_o such_o be_v the_o discretion_n of_o the_o lord_n yea_o and_o much_o more_o towards_o man_n that_o if_o they_o convert_v and_o turn_v into_o the_o true_a vine_n and_o tree_n of_o life_n not_o resist_v the_o power_n of_o life_n therein_o but_o suffer_v it_o to_o work_v in_o they_o to_o kill_v the_o unholy_a life_n by_o which_o they_o live_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o sin_n and_o if_o they_o continue_v thus_o convert_v in_o a_o passive_a and_o forbear_v way_n suffer_v the_o spirit_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o they_o to_o do_v in_o it_o what_o he_o please_v this_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o the_o lord_n even_o thus_o to_o die_v in_o he_o and_o bless_v be_v such_o for_o their_o work_n shall_v follow_v they_o in_o due_a time_n and_o this_o be_v according_a to_o what_o our_o lord_n teach_v himself_o unless_o say_v he_o a_o grain_n of_o wheat_n fall_v into_o the_o ground_n and_o die_v it_o remain_v alone_o but_o if_o it_o die_v it_o bring_v forth_o much_o fruit_n this_o he_o speak_v in_o relation_n to_o himself_o but_o it_o hold_v good_a also_o in_o relation_n to_o other_o will_v thou_o indeed_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o good_a work_n unto_o the_o lord_n then_o thou_o must_v fall_v into_o the_o ground_n and_o die_v like_o a_o grain_n of_o wheat_n and_o afterward_o thou_o will_v live_v again_o and_o spring_v up_o bear_v friut_a both_o good_a and_o abundant_a and_o the_o
but_o conditional_o to_o wit_n upon_o their_o believe_v for_o they_o who_o believe_v receive_v power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n whereas_o the_o unbeliever_n want_v this_o power_n because_o of_o their_o unbelief_n and_o forasmuch_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v at_o such_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n do_v visit_v they_o and_o touch_v their_o heart_n by_o the_o gracious_a influence_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n therefore_o we_o do_v just_o say_v that_o all_o man_n may_v do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o restriction_n aforesaid_a chap._n x._o the_o same_o effectual_o in_o order_n thereunto_o great_a and_o excellent_a be_v the_o benefit_n which_o do_v come_v upon_o man_n through_o the_o come_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n even_o in_o person_n both_o active_o and_o passive_o by_o which_o they_o be_v whole_o justify_v â—n_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n through_o his_o satisfaction_n though_o they_o remain_v in_o much_o sinfulness_n according_a to_o the_o manner_n as_o follow_v i._o when_o man_n sin_v against_o god_n and_o become_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a in_o his_o heart_n before_o he_o through_o transgession_n the_o peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o he_o be_v break_v and_o so_o man_n who_o in_o his_o innocent_a state_n be_v justify_v and_o at_o peace_n with_o god_n now_o through_o his_o sin_n become_v unjustified_a and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n kindle_v against_o he_o both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n in_o great_a measure_n ii_o this_o wrath_n of_o god_n will_v have_v burn_v in_o such_o a_o violent_a and_o forcible_a manner_n have_v not_o he_o provide_v a_o way_n in_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o abate_v and_o qualify_v it_o that_o it_o will_v have_v sink_v man_n into_o endless_a for_o the_o qualify_a it_o at_o first_o and_o afterward_o for_o the_o total_a quench_n of_o it_o be_v the_o come_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n his_o only_o beget_v son_n in_o a_o holy_a seed_n conception_n and_o birth_n out_o of_o which_o shall_v spring_v such_o a_o gentle_a meek_a and_o qualify_a spirit_n and_o life_n that_o it_o shall_v stand_v up_o in_o the_o way_n betwixt_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o man_n first_o to_o abate_v and_o qualify_v the_o wrath_n towards_o man_n even_o while_o they_o be_v in_o their_o sin_n but_o not_o to_o remove_v it_o and_o that_o for_o a_o certain_a time_n or_o day_n of_o visitation_n give_v they_o of_o god_n to_o repent_v and_o come_v out_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o sinful_a nature_n and_o spirit_n into_o holiness_n and_o the_o nature_n too_o nice_o to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o influence_n of_o his_o inward_a and_o outward_a come_n and_o the_o effect_n thereof_o but_o rather_o to_o take_v they_o conjunct_o as_o in_o a_o etc._n be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a and_o profound_a mystery_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o have_v a_o exceed_a much_o deep_a sense_n and_o consideration_n than_o most_o apprehend_v or_o than_o any_o can_v apprehend_v but_o as_o it_o be_v open_v unto_o they_o in_o the_o life_n light_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o therefore_o i_o do_v admonish_v and_o warn_v all_o yea_o i_o obtest_v they_o in_o the_o power_n and_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o they_o do_v not_o make_v any_o slight_a account_n of_o it_o or_o undervalue_v this_o great_a and_o glorious_a mystery_n that_o shall_v be_v the_o eternal_a object_n of_o the_o saint_n contemplation_n for_o which_o as_o among_o other_o thing_n they_o shall_v eternal_o adore_v and_o admire_v present_a do_v excel_v the_o base_a metal_n stone_n or_o sand_n or_o turf_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o this_o excellent_a body_n or_o birth_n of_o jesus_n christ_n may_v be_v the_o more_o prepare_v forsuch_o a_o effect_n viz._n to_o cure_v and_o restore_v all_o thing_n therefore_o it_o please_v the_o father_n to_o give_v he_o up_o both_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o suffer_v such_o deep_a inward_a affliction_n suffering_n and_o trial_n for_o by_o these_o that_o hide_a divine_a virtue_n and_o perfection_n which_o be_v in_o the_o centre_n both_o of_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v raise_v up_o and_o bring_v forth_o as_o into_o the_o circumference_n even_o unto_o its_o fullness_n and_o perfection_n according_a to_o which_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o he_o the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n be_v make_v perfect_a through_o suffering_n for_o so_o it_o be_v indeed_o as_o to_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o have_v any_o perfection_n or_o virtue_n further_o in_o they_o than_o be_v manifest_a as_o it_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o centre_n which_o perfection_n be_v raise_v up_o and_o bring_v into_o view_n or_o manifestation_n through_o its_o suffering_n as_o by_o mortification_n calcination_n melt_v it_o in_o the_o fire_n heat_n it_o pound_v and_o press_v it_o bruise_v and_o squeeze_v boil_a and_o many_o such_o kind_n of_o thing_n well_o know_v to_o chemist_n and_o physician_n and_o thus_o be_v our_o bless_a lord_n use_v both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n his_o deep_a sufring_n in_o both_o be_v like_o a_o wine-press_n which_o serve_v to_o squeeze_v and_o press_v out_o the_o hide_a wine_n that_o be_v in_o his_o grape_n even_o that_o pure_a and_o precious_a water_n and_o blood_n which_o come_v out_o at_o his_o side_n on_o the_o cross_n and_o when_o in_o the_o garden_n he_o sweat_v that_o drop_n of_o blood_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n these_o very_a drop_n of_o water_n and_o blood_n have_v a_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n in_o they_o beyond_o what_o man_n heart_n be_v able_a to_o conceive_v of_o whereby_o they_o enter_v into_o the_o very_a kernel_n and_o quintessence_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n to_o its_o very_a heart_n for_o its_o deliverance_n and_o restauration_n and_o this_o be_v as_o a_o seed_n that_o be_v then_o sow_v in_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o outward_a nature_n by_o which_o it_o be_v bless_v of_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o through_o which_o it_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n be_v perfect_o deliver_v and_o cure_v of_o its_o vanity_n corruption_n and_o bondage_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o at_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n fall_v into_o a_o wonderful_a passion_n and_o suffering_n in_o so_o much_o that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a darkness_n over_o all_o and_o the_o very_a earth_n be_v as_o it_o be_v rent_n for_o that_o secret_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n which_o go_v forth_o from_o he_o at_o his_o suffering_n even_o in_o the_o water_n and_o the_o blood_n pierce_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o world_n and_o wrought_v in_o it_o like_o physic_n that_o work_v strong_o against_o the_o corrupt_a humour_n in_o man_n body_n that_o do_v great_o affect_v the_o body_n with_o suffering_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v even_o fit_a that_o the_o creation_n shall_v after_o its_o manner_n suffer_v with_o he_o which_o be_v to_o partake_v of_o such_o glorious_a effect_n through_o his_o suffering_n and_o though_o the_o outward_a creation_n be_v not_o yet_o cure_v through_o the_o secret_a virtue_n of_o that_o water_n and_o blood_n no_o nor_o yet_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n they_o shall_v even_o through_o and_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o suffering_n but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v above_o so_o do_v i_o again_o repeat_v it_o that_o it_o may_v have_v the_o more_o weight_n viz._n that_o we_o be_v not_o too_o nice_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o influence_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o outward_a and_o inward_a suffering_n but_o to_o understand_v they_o in_o a_o perfect_a conjunction_n and_o that_o the_o end_n of_o his_o suffer_v in_o both_o be_v this_o viz._n 1._o both_o to_o quench_v and_o allay_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o be_v kindle_v both_o in_o man_n soul_n and_o body_n and_o also_o in_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o 2._o to_o purify_v and_o cure_v both_o man_n and_o also_o the_o outward_a creation_n from_o corruption_n vanity_n and_o bondage_n and_o so_o in_o relation_n to_o man_n this_o i_o say_v that_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o obedience_n life_n and_o righteousness_n both_o inward_o and_o outward_o have_v a_o very_a bless_a influence_n upon_o man_n both_o to_o remove_v the_o wrath_n and_o also_o to_o remove_v sin_n the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o to_o bring_v in_o everlasting_a righteousness_n to_o cover_v the_o soul_n with_o by_o a_o real_a participation_n of_o it_o over_z and_o beyond_o all_o imaginary_a do_v bear_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n either_o in_o that_o manner_n or_o measure_n which_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n do_v or_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v have_v not_o the_o lord_n recover_v we_o i_o altogether_o deny_v for_o he_o can_v and_o do_v satisfy_v the_o father_n well_o and_o acceptable_o without_o bear_v it_o in_o that_o way_n but_o if_o it_o be_v query_v if_o he_o suffer_v by_o that_o wrath_n when_o he_o stand_v betwixt_o we_o and_o it_o i_o answer_v he_o suffer_v a_o trial_n and_o chastisement_n by_o it_o and_o so_o it_o be_v call_v a_o chastisement_n but_o it_o can_v never_o be_v say_v that_o the_o father_n be_v offend_v or_o displease_v with_o he_o even_o while_o he_o suffer_v for_o we_o for_o the_o father_n be_v satisfy_v and_o well_o please_v in_o he_o in_o his_o great_a suffering_n which_o he_o do_v bear_v in_o most_o perfect_a resignation_n love_n and_o willingness_n both_o to_o please_v his_o father_n and_o also_o to_o save_v and_o reconcile_v man_n unto_o god_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o withdraw_v that_o sensible_a comfort_n from_o he_o when_o he_o suffer_v on_o the_o cross_n it_o be_v not_o for_o any_o displeasure_n towards_o he_o but_o for_o a_o trial_n and_o as_o be_v say_v to_o raise_v up_o and_o draw_v forth_o that_o excellent_a virtue_n and_o perfection_n that_o be_v in_o he_o the_o more_o so_o it_o please_v the_o father_n to_o bruise_v he_o and_o press_v he_o with_o
suffering_n as_o in_o a_o wine-press_n to_o the_o end_n that_o sweet_a wine_n may_v come_v forth_o that_o have_v the_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o cure_v man_n of_o their_o wound_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o as_o our_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v give_v by_o his_o outward_a come_n etc._n etc._n as_o aforesaid_a a_o very_a great_a and_o large_a testimony_n of_o iniquity_n of_o man_n which_o strike_v against_o his_o inward_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n in_o all_o age_n and_o generation_n before_o the_o wound_a and_o crucify_a it_o in_o they_o as_o now_o they_o do_v against_o he_o in_o the_o outward_a by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v great_o convince_v that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v their_o salvation_n in_o so_o bear_v and_o suffer_v they_o for_o have_v he_o not_o intend_v love_n to_o they_o herein_o he_o may_v have_v ease_v himself_o of_o his_o adversary_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o altogether_o deliver_v that_o tender_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n from_o its_o suffering_n in_o they_o and_o bring_v intolerable_a suffering_n upon_o the_o transgressor_n themselves_o also_o herein_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o power_n to_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o though_o he_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n to_o suffer_v most_o deep_a affliction_n in_o and_o under_o sinner_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n he_o raise_v he_o up_o again_o even_o from_o death_n and_o do_v manifest_o set_v he_o over_o all_o his_o adversary_n according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o which_o mighty_a power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v unto_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o so_o these_o thing_n be_v inward_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v indeed_o very_o forcible_a and_o prevail_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o it_o both_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o to_o rest_v and_o stay_v its_o faith_n upon_o he_o for_o its_o full_a and_o perfect_a salvation_n as_o also_o to_o work_v and_o beget_v love_n unto_o he_o in_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wonderful_a love_n of_o god_n as_o manifest_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o the_o outward_a ii_o and_o yet_o more_o particular_o the_o come_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o present_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v himself_o tell_v it_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n how_o he_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v strong_a and_o prevail_a occasion_n to_o work_v most_o ardent_a and_o dear_a love_n in_o the_o soul_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o towards_o the_o father_n also_o who_o free_a gift_n of_o love_n he_o be_v iii_o and_o they_o have_v indeed_o a_o great_a influence_n when_o present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o work_v in_o our_o heart_n true_a and_o real_a repentance_n from_o all_o our_o sin_n yea_o and_o a_o perfect_a and_o universal_a hatred_n against_o they_o as_o have_v a_o sense_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o his_o suffering_n yea_o his_o deep_a and_o heavy_a suffering_n even_o in_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v through_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o iniquity_n which_o he_o then_o do_v bear_v so_o that_o the_o wound_n he_o get_v in_o his_o bless_a body_n with_o the_o nail_n and_o the_o spear_n and_o the_o thorn_n and_o the_o violent_a hand_n of_o man_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o these_o wound_n he_o have_v in_o his_o righteous_a soul_n and_o
life_n through_o the_o burden_n and_o weight_n of_o man_n iniquity_n but_o how_o christ_n do_v suffer_v under_o the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v in_o any_o true_a measure_n but_o by_o these_o alone_o who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o righteous_a life_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o to_o know_v a_o measure_n of_o redemption_n from_o sin_n thereby_o such_o will_v feel_v how_o that_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n jesus_n suffer_v by_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o so_o that_o many_o time_n we_o have_v feel_v the_o life_n of_o he_o in_o we_o to_o be_v deep_o smite_v and_o wound_v and_o deep_o to_o suffer_v through_o and_o by_o iniquity_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o it_o even_o in_o other_o and_o in_o a_o whole_a country_n and_o nation_n yea_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v because_o of_o that_o deep_a and_o near_a sympathy_n that_o his_o life_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o that_o life_n that_o be_v oppress_v in_o other_o till_o it_o be_v raise_v so_o that_o many_o in_o who_o this_o righteous_a life_n be_v raise_v to_o reign_v in_o perfect_a dominion_n over_o all_o its_o contrary_a in_o their_o own_o particular_n yet_o witness_v many_o time_n its_o deep_a suffering_n through_o its_o sympathy_n with_o that_o seed_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n oppress_v and_o murder_v in_o other_o so_o that_o indeed_o upon_o the_o matter_n this_o righteous_a life_n in_o none_o of_o the_o saint_n will_v be_v whole_o deliver_v from_o its_o suffering_n till_o that_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n over_o all_o the_o world_n be_v raise_v up_o in_o all_o heart_n to_o reign_v with_o it_o in_o dominion_n either_o in_o full_a love_n or_o wrath_n and_o true_o these_o deep_a suffering_n of_o christ_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o man_n iniquity_n real_o feel_v and_o witness_v by_o he_o as_o in_o the_o garden_n and_o on_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n i_o find_v the_o professor_n know_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o for_o they_o conceive_v not_o that_o christ_n suffer_v any_o other_o way_n by_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n lay_v on_o he_o then_o in_o that_o he_o suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a to_o man_n for_o sin_n and_o so_o they_o understand_v his_o bear_v our_o sin_n to_o be_v only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o do_v bear_v which_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o suffer_v much_o more_o deep_o by_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o because_o of_o that_o great_a and_o implacable_a contrariety_n and_o enmity_n which_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o have_v against_o his_o tender_a life_n which_o at_o that_o time_n have_v muster_v up_o all_o its_o force_n against_o he_o the_o lord_n permit_v it_o so_o to_o be_v that_o by_o his_o patient_a and_o meek_a suffering_n he_o may_v overcome_v it_o as_o indeed_o he_o do_v and_o even_o upon_o the_o cross_n triumph_v over_o it_o and_o give_v the_o spirit_n of_o transgression_n the_o great_a blow_n and_o wound_n that_o ever_o it_o get_v which_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n by_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o his_o suffering_n be_v utter_o slay_v and_o extinguish_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o fill_v with_o his_o holy_a and_o righteous_a spirit_n and_o this_o spirit_n of_o iniquity_n wrought_v what_o it_o can_v so_o to_o eclipse_n and_o vail_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n from_o his_o righteous_a soul_n as_o to_o take_v away_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n from_o he_o which_o at_o other_o time_n he_o have_v yet_o his_o faith_n pierce_v through_o this_o cloud_n that_o it_o do_v not_o overcome_v he_o but_o he_o overcome_v it_o and_o signify_v his_o faith_n in_o god_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o respect_v that_o sensible_a joy_n and_o comfort_n yet_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o deep_a trial_n the_o father_n be_v with_o he_o in_o love_n and_o in_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n of_o that_o love_n the_o wrath_n become_v mitigate_v and_o qualify_v towards_o man_n and_o to_o speak_v proper_o the_o wrath_n be_v indeed_o against_o man_n but_o never_o on_o any_o account_n direct_o against_o christ_n who_o do_v indeed_o intervene_v and_o intermediate_v betwixt_o it_o and_o we_o to_o bear_v it_o off_o and_o qualify_v it_o as_o be_v abovesaid_a yet_o he_o can_v never_o suffer_v it_o as_o the_o damn_a do_v for_o he_o qualify_v it_o both_o in_o the_o father_n love_n and_o in_o his_o own_o but_o the_o wrath_n which_o the_o damn_a suffer_v have_v no_o such_o qualification_n and_o true_o we_o can_v judge_v that_o the_o father_n be_v to_o speak_v proper_o offend_v or_o displease_v with_o he_o nay_o not_o on_o our_o account_n nor_o do_v the_o scripture_n speak_v any_o thing_n so_o only_o it_o please_v the_o father_n thus_o to_o try_v he_o and_o make_v he_o perfect_a thus_o by_o suffering_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v overcome_v sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o in_o the_o more_o glory_n and_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_v to_o help_v they_o that_o be_v under_o trial_n as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o be_v present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o have_v also_o great_a influence_n to_o raise_v in_o our_o soul_n most_o fervent_a breathe_n and_o supplication_n unto_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o for_o his_o pardon_v and_o forgive_a grace_n for_o and_o because_o of_o his_o son_n bloodshed_n his_o suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o he_o procure_v or_o purchase_v it_o but_o also_o for_o his_o sanctify_a and_o mortify_v grace_n even_o for_o a_o abundant_a measure_n of_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o die_v perfect_o unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n so_o thâ—t_v the_o soul_n may_v strong_o plead_v with_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v pour_v forth_o abundant_o of_o his_o grace_n life_n light_n and_o spirit_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v purchase_v it_o abundant_o and_o have_v open_v the_o fountain_n of_o the_o father_n love_n abundant_o by_o his_o obedience_n and_o righteousness_n to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o soul_n may_v come_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o that_o fullness_n of_o he_o which_o he_o have_v purchase_v and_o be_v in_o he_o even_o grace_n for_o grace_n joh._n 1.16_o both_o to_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v and_o as_o much_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o v._o also_o these_o thing_n present_v in_o the_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o in_o and_o thereby_o apply_v to_o the_o soul_n become_v very_o strong_a and_o forcible_a motive_n unto_o it_o to_o war_n against_o sin_n universal_o and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o to_o the_o utter_a kill_n and_o destroy_v of_o it_o see_v it_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n of_o that_o tender_a life_n of_o christ_n which_o suffer_v so_o much_o on_o this_o account_n even_o to_o the_o mortify_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o sin_n and_o save_v it_o therefrom_o so_o that_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o diligent_o apply_v itself_o unto_o a_o total_a mortification_n of_o sin_n it_o do_v nothing_o answer_v unto_o that_o love_n and_o goodwill_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o suffering_n nor_o to_o the_o end_n thereof_o they_o be_v also_o of_o the_o same_o force_n to_o move_v the_o soul_n to_o follow_v after_o holiness_n till_o it_o attain_v unto_o it_o so_o as_o to_o be_v pure_a and_o holy_a as_o christ_n its_o belove_a and_o spouse_n who_o give_v himself_o for_o she_o that_o she_o may_v be_v holy_a and_o to_o present_v she_o unto_o god_n without_o spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n eph._n 5.27_o also_o how_o can_v the_o soul_n but_o be_v move_v to_o press_v after_o holiness_n see_v it_o inward_o feel_v that_o the_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o much_o ease_v and_o refresh_v and_o delight_v in_o its_o become_a holy_a as_o ever_o it_o be_v former_o grieve_v and_o burden_v with_o its_o iniquity_n vi_o our_o bless_a lord_n in_o his_o outward_a come_n life_n and_o way_n of_o conversation_n doctrine_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n be_v a_o most_o noble_a and_o perfect_a example_n unto_o we_o even_o the_o best_a that_o ever_o outward_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v that_o we_o may_v imitate_v his_o virtue_n and_o follow_v his_o step_n in_o all_o godliness_n temperance_n and_o righteousness_n who_o teach_v we_o most_o excellent_a document_n and_o instruction_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o with_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a suffering_n who_o know_v no_o sin_n yet_o so_o willing_o
there_o be_v require_v a_o inward_a spring_n and_o power_n of_o the_o same_o life_n of_o christ_n by_o which_o he_o do_v these_o thing_n to_o enable_v they_o to_o follow_v his_o example_n and_o all_o imitation_n without_o the_o soul_n attain_v to_o be_v endue_v with_o this_o life_n which_o it_o attain_v unto_o through_o the_o arise_v of_o the_o holy_a seed_n in_o it_o be_v as_o if_o a_o man_n will_v by_o much_o pain_n set_v himself_o to_o mount_v up_o towards_o heaven_n and_o fly_v through_o the_o midst_n of_o it_o like_o a_o eagle_n or_o bird_n of_o the_o air_n which_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o do_v even_o so_o as_o impossible_a be_v it_o for_o he_o to_o follow_v christ_n in_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n do_n and_o suffering_n but_o by_o be_v endue_v with_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o heavenly_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o which_o be_v as_o wing_n whereby_o the_o soul_n may_v indeed_o mount_v up_o as_o a_o eagle_n and_o follow_v christ_n fly_v with_o he_o through_o find_v great_o bless_v of_o god_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o hold_v forth_o unto_o people_n whereby_o they_o attain_v unto_o holiness_n to_o a_o be_v make_v conformable_a unto_o which_o hinder_v its_o arise_v whence_o then_o in_o due_a time_n such_o a_o measure_n of_o light_n and_o life_n arise_v therein_o as_o give_v they_o both_o true_o to_o know_v christ_n and_o to_o follow_v he_o george_n keith_n how_o to_o discern_v the_o conviction_n that_o proceed_v from_o the_o light_n of_o faith_n or_o divine_a principle_n in_o we_o from_o those_o that_o proceed_v from_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n or_o mere_a natural_a and_o humane_a reason_n assist_v by_o argument_n draw_v from_o scripture_n this_o question_n i_o find_v weighty_a on_o my_o heart_n to_o answer_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o some_o who_o mind_n through_o the_o subtle_a work_n of_o the_o enemy_n may_v be_v perplex_v with_o the_o same_o as_o my_o mind_n be_v for_o a_o considerable_a time_n after_o i_o be_v in_o great_a measure_n convince_v of_o the_o truth_n the_o enemy_n of_o my_o soul_n do_v exceed_o work_v in_o i_o to_o cause_v i_o to_o believe_v that_o i_o be_v still_o but_o where_o former_o i_o have_v be_v to_o wit_n that_o although_o i_o have_v change_v my_o judgement_n concern_v many_o thing_n yet_o the_o principle_n that_o sway_v my_o judgement_n be_v still_o but_o the_o natural_a principle_n help_v with_o scripture_n argument_n and_o so_o my_o faith_n touch_v these_o thing_n be_v but_o mere_o humane_a and_o natural_a not_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a and_o consequent_o be_v nothing_o but_o opinion_n still_o and_o that_o i_o be_v still_o but_o a_o natural_a man_n and_o no_o true_a believer_n and_o that_o though_o i_o shall_v join_v with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n who_o have_v the_o true_a divine_a faith_n and_o shall_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v i_o can_v not_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n my_o obedience_n not_o proceed_v from_o the_o true_a divine_a faith_n which_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n nor_o have_v receive_v the_o true_a divine_a call_n this_o objection_n do_v so_o trouble_v perplex_v and_o disquiet_v i_o through_o the_o work_n of_o satan_n as_o it_o be_v under_o ground_n and_o hide_v himself_o and_o his_o design_n from_o i_o that_o none_o but_o the_o lord_n alone_o do_v or_o can_v know_v the_o great_a anguish_n of_o my_o soul_n and_o have_v not_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o wonderful_a mercy_n break_v this_o snare_n i_o have_v be_v hold_v in_o it_o unto_o this_o very_a day_n and_o perhaps_o have_v die_v in_o that_o sad_a and_o lamentable_a condition_n and_o i_o do_v certain_o know_v the_o enemy_n do_v assault_v many_o in_o this_o day_n and_o do_v prevail_v over_o they_o by_o the_o same_o tentation_n who_o be_v true_o convince_v of_o truth_n by_o the_o divine_a light_n and_o principle_n of_o god_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o divine_a conviction_n be_v a_o sufficient_a divine_a call_n be_v always_o accompany_v with_o a_o secret_a divine_a draw_v to_o give_v obedience_n unto_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n whereof_o they_o be_v convince_v the_o sense_n now_o of_o such_o soul_n condition_n be_v bring_v upon_o i_o my_o bowel_n be_v move_v in_o great_a tenderness_n towards_o they_o and_o my_o heart_n be_v open_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o say_v somewhat_o unto_o they_o that_o may_v be_v of_o service_n to_o who_o hand_n it_o may_v be_v order_v to_o come_v and_o the_o breathe_n of_o my_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o lifeless_a that_o god_n almighty_n may_v bless_v it_o 〈…〉_z and_o make_v it_o effectual_a the_o 〈…〉_z between_o these_o two_o principle_n and_o their_o respective_a operation_n in_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o this_o that_o they_o be_v not_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n wide_o distinct_a or_o discernible_a to_o be_v so_o by_o they_o who_o have_v the_o true_a eye_n of_o discern_v open_v in_o they_o and_o be_v come_v to_o a_o clear_a inward_a sense_n and_o feeling_n through_o a_o live_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n for_o indeed_o no_o thing_n in_o the_o whole_a universe_n do_v more_o clear_o appear_v to_o be_v of_o a_o differ_a nature_n unto_o those_o who_o have_v the_o spiritual_a sense_n raise_v and_o open_v in_o they_o than_o the_o two_o aforesaid_a principle_n or_o light_n which_o differ_v as_o wide_o as_o heaven_n and_o earth_n for_o the_o one_o be_v of_o the_o earth_n earthly_a the_o other_o be_v of_o heaven_n heavenly_a the_o one_o be_v of_o the_o first_o adam_n the_o other_o be_v of_o the_o second_o adam_n jesus_n christ_n yea_o the_o one_o be_v mere_o humane_a and_o natural_a the_o other_o be_v pure_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a the_o cause_n then_o of_o the_o great_a difficulty_n to_o discern_v betwixt_o these_o two_o principle_n and_o their_o respective_a operation_n be_v that_o darkness_n and_o confusion_n that_o be_v over_o the_o heart_n and_o understand_n of_o those_o who_o be_v but_o first_o convince_v of_o the_o truth_n and_o not_o as_o yet_o real_o so_o convert_v unto_o it_o as_o to_o be_v leaven_v by_o the_o power_n of_o it_o and_o transform_v into_o its_o nature_n yea_o after_o some_o beginning_n of_o true_a conversion_n wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o difficulty_n do_v in_o some_o measure_n still_o remain_v but_o not_o so_o great_a as_o formerly_z the_o great_a difficulty_n therefore_o belong_v unto_o those_o only_a who_o be_v but_o beginner_n and_o beginning_n to_o travel_v out_o of_o egypt_n and_o babylon_n and_o sodom_n into_o the_o holy_a land_n the_o land_n of_o the_o live_n and_o the_o holy_a hill_n of_o zion_n with_o their_o face_n thitherwards_o to_o who_o also_o it_o be_v a_o great_a difficulty_n how_o to_o distinguish_v not_o only_o betwixt_o the_o naturals_n understanding_n and_o the_o divine_a light_n of_o faith_n in_o they_o but_o to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o satan_n transform_v himself_o into_o the_o similitude_n of_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n in_o all_o which_o notwithstanding_o the_o difficulty_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o soul_n do_v represent_v it_o to_o be_v now_o to_o help_v any_o distress_a or_o perplex_a soul_n that_o may_v be_v in_o doubt_n concern_v this_o thing_n to_o such_o i_o say_v since_o thou_o be_v real_o convince_v that_o god_n have_v give_v a_o from_o the_o natural_a light_n and_o mere_a natural_a understanding_n of_o thy_o soul_n as_o influence_v by_o scripture_n argument_n and_o other_o outward_a help_n and_o not_o also_o from_o the_o divine_a principle_n of_o the_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n
for_o certain_o this_o divine_a principle_n which_o be_v in_o thou_o be_v not_o altogether_o idle_a or_o without_o operation_n it_o be_v of_o a_o most_o active_a or_o operative_a nature_n even_o as_o fire_n and_o light_n in_o the_o outward_a can_v the_o outward_a sun_n shine_v and_o enlighten_v the_o earth_n and_o have_v no_o operation_n nor_o influence_n upon_o it_o or_o can_v the_o fire_n burn_v and_o have_v no_o operation_n or_o influence_n upon_o what_o be_v next_o unto_o it_o nay_o sure_o and_o therefore_o no_o more_o can_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o light_n be_v in_o any_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v certain_o and_o infallible_o have_v some_o influence_n and_o operation_n upon_o that_o soul_n in_o who_o it_o be_v and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n who_o day_n of_o visitation_n be_v not_o expire_v and_o the_o most_o proper_a operation_n of_o it_o in_o the_o first_o place_n be_v to_o convince_v the_o soul_n of_o truth_n i_o mean_v of_o somewhat_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o somewhat_o of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o what_o he_o do_v accept_v and_o be_v well_o please_v with_o and_o what_o he_o do_v reject_v and_o abhor_v the_o word_n of_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 4.12_o be_v live_v and_o powerful_a or_o operative_a and_o sharp_a than_o any_o two_o edge_a sword_n pierce_v even_o to_o the_o divide_v asunder_o of_o soul_n and_o spirit_n and_o of_o the_o joint_n and_o marrow_n and_o be_v a_o discerner_n judge_n or_o reprover_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o intent_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o this_o word_n be_v in_o all_o even_o in_o some_o measure_n or_o degree_n real_o to_o convince_v they_o and_o although_o there_o be_v great_a darkness_n over_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n of_o all_o unconverted_a man_n and_o woman_n that_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v darkness_n yet_o as_o john_n have_v declare_v the_o light_n shine_v in_o darkness_n although_o the_o darkness_n comprehend_v it_o not_o 1.5_o so_o the_o light_n not_o only_o be_v in_o the_o darkness_n but_o it_o shine_v in_o the_o darkness_n and_o work_v against_o the_o darkness_n to_o reveal_v it_o and_o remove_v it_o even_o as_o the_o darkness_n do_v work_v in_o the_o soul_n to_o hide_v and_o obscure_v the_o light_n and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o extinguish_v and_o quench_v it_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o it_o be_v a_o most_o absurd_a thing_n to_o acknowledge_v that_o the_o natural_a principle_n have_v its_o operation_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v not_o without_o its_o influence_n and_o force_n to_o move_v and_o act_v the_o soul_n as_o also_o that_o the_o it_o be_v and_o yet_o to_o deny_v that_o this_o divine_a principle_n that_o be_v in_o nature_n more_o powerful_a and_o more_o operative_a than_o either_o of_o the_o other_o two_o have_v any_o influence_n or_o operation_n in_o they_o at_o all_o and_o this_o i_o will_v have_v thou_o also_o to_o consider_v that_o it_o please_v god_n in_o his_o great_a condescension_n many_o time_n together_o with_o his_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n in_o thy_o soul_n to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o argument_n draw_v therefrom_o make_v they_o of_o service_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n as_o also_o to_o make_v use_n of_o thy_o own_o natural_a understanding_n and_o the_o natural_a principle_n or_o light_n by_o shine_v upon_o it_o and_o raise_v up_o in_o it_o pure_a and_o holy_a conviction_n and_o open_n of_o truth_n together_o with_o pure_a and_o holy_a desire_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o as_o they_o be_v entertain_v become_v a_o true_a beginning_n the_o main_a stroke_n and_o hand_n in_o the_o business_n at_o other_o time_n the_o divine_a light_n appear_v more_o immediate_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o more_o open_o and_o scarce_o at_o all_o make_v use_v of_o the_o natural_a principle_n or_o understanding_n further_a than_o in_o a_o passive_a way_n as_o when_o the_o eye_n look_v towards_o a_o object_n or_o as_o the_o ear_n hear_v a_o voice_n be_v give_v be_v a_o most_o singular_a and_o choice_a mercy_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n which_o yet_o be_v most_o ordinary_a to_o all_o those_o who_o in_o any_o considerable_a measure_n be_v true_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n and_o leaven_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n at_o any_o time_n to_o give_v thou_o such_o a_o experience_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o so_o considerable_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n thou_o be_v to_o receive_v it_o as_o a_o singular_a favour_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n but_o if_o it_o be_v deny_v at_o present_a unto_o thou_o god_n not_o judge_v thou_o worthy_a of_o so_o high_a a_o favour_n thou_o oughte_v to_o be_v content_a with_o that_o other_o way_n and_o such_o a_o convincement_n be_v a_o true_a divine_a and_o spiritual_a convincement_n proceed_v original_o and_o principal_o from_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n of_o faith_n and_o there_o be_v virtue_n sufficient_a in_o that_o which_o do_v thus_o convince_v thou_o to_o enable_v thou_o to_o believe_v and_o join_v unto_o it_o and_o to_o obey_v its_o requiring_n according_a to_o the_o present_a measure_n and_o that_o be_v a_o true_a sufficient_a divine_a call_n for_o the_o present_a which_o if_o thou_o do_v slight_a or_o neglect_v in_o expectation_n of_o a_o great_a or_o more_o clear_a thou_o do_v tempt_v the_o lord_n and_o provoke_v his_o holy_a spirit_n moreover_o i_o will_v have_v thou_o to_o know_v that_o thou_o ought_v not_o to_o expect_v that_o measure_n or_o degree_n of_o clearness_n or_o clear_a and_o distinct_a discern_v as_o perhaps_o thy_o own_o mind_n do_v judge_v to_o be_v requisite_a god_n be_v wise_a than_o thou_o and_o do_v better_a know_v what_o be_v fit_a for_o thou_o than_o thou_o do_v and_o indeed_o this_o be_v no_o small_a engine_n
little_a and_o diminutive_a that_o though_o they_o have_v room_n they_o can_v not_o perform_v the_o operation_n of_o their_o nature_n till_o by_o their_o more_o through_o generation_n and_o formation_n they_o be_v increase_v and_o augment_v and_o thus_o the_o little_a embryo_n or_o conception_n in_o the_o womb_n be_v it_o of_o man_n or_o beast_n can_v perform_v the_o operation_n of_o a_o man_n or_o beast_n nay_o though_o the_o child_n be_v bear_v and_o come_v into_o the_o world_n how_o little_a do_v the_o power_n of_o manhood_n appear_v in_o it_o but_o as_o the_o body_n of_o the_o child_n grow_v up_o the_o power_n of_o manhood_n do_v more_o and_o more_o appear_v as_o of_o understanding_n speech_n memory_n and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o it_o be_v much_o what_o in_o some_o manner_n as_o to_o the_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a seed_n or_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o convert_v unto_o it_o as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o permit_v to_o take_v root_n and_o plant_v itself_o in_o the_o soul_n its_o life_n and_o power_n will_v not_o be_v generate_v or_o raise_v up_o and_o so_o the_o spiritual_a generation_n of_o the_o seed_n be_v the_o raise_n up_o of_o its_o life_n and_o power_n and_o bring_v they_o into_o manifestation_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o the_o soul_n drink_v in_o it_o come_v to_o be_v regenerate_v or_o renew_v thereby_o and_o still_o more_o and_o more_o according_a to_o the_o growth_n and_o increase_n of_o the_o seed_n endue_v therewith_o now_o the_o power_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n which_o proceed_v or_o flow_v come_v to_o have_v union_n with_o god_n for_o the_o divine_a birth_n with_o the_o life_n and_o power_n or_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v that_o noble_a chain_n which_o tie_v and_o join_v the_o soul_n excellency_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n and_o seed_n above_o the_o soul_n appear_v great_o in_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o soul_n can_v corrupt_v and_o degenerate_a with_o all_o its_o gower_n this_o holy_a life_n can_v never_o in_o the_o least_o admit_v of_o any_o corruption_n for_o it_o ever_o abhor_v all_o sin_n it_o may_v indeed_o be_v kill_v or_o crucify_v by_o it_o but_o never_o corrupt_v and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o most_o fit_a medium_n or_o mean_v to_o unite_v the_o soul_n unto_o god_n and_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v as_o so_o many_o chain_n whereby_o the_o lord_n do_v unite_v the_o pure_a and_o righteous_a soul_n unto_o he_o you_o must_v understand_v therefore_o the_o soul_n union_n with_o god_n be_v not_o simple_o immediate_a but_o mediate_a through_o this_o god_n consist_v not_o simple_o in_o mere_a act_n as_o when_o it_o exercise_v act_n of_o conversion_n towards_o god_n these_o and_o other_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n do_v contribute_v and_o conduce_v unto_o this_o union_n and_o beget_v it_o yet_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o more_o constant_a and_o permanent_a union_n with_o god_n then_o by_o act_n whether_o of_o one_o or_o all_o its_o power_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n union_n consist_v only_o in_o act_n then_o when_o it_o do_v not_o act_n but_o be_v whole_o suspend_v in_o its_o act_n towards_o god_n the_o union_n shall_v cease_v which_o be_v false_a for_o when_o a_o righteous_a man_n sleep_v so_o that_o perhaps_o his_o soul_n exercise_v no_o act_n yet_o his_o union_n remain_v with_o he_o buâ—_n because_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o union_n with_o god_n by_o its_o act_n of_o conversion_n as_o aforesaid_a proceed_v from_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n therefore_o this_o union_n enjoy_v by_o act_n may_v be_v call_v actual_a union_n and_o the_o other_o which_o abide_v without_o act_n or_o while_o act_n be_v suspend_v may_v be_v call_v potential_a because_o the_o soul_n remain_v in_o union_n with_o god_n simple_o through_o its_o power_n be_v as_o it_o be_v glue_v unto_o or_o cement_v with_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n now_o any_o sin_n which_o the_o soul_n commit_v do_v certain_o break_v off_o its_o actual_a union_n with_o god_n but_o though_o the_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v not_o quite_o break_v off_o the_o potential_a though_o it_o weaken_v
