know_a world_n and_o that_o there_o be_v then_o the_o spiritual_a gift_n of_o vocal_a sing_v those_o scripture_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o that_o primitive_a gospel-time_n but_o their_o more_o complete_a fulfil_n shall_v be_v in_o the_o great_a sabbath_n which_o i_o believe_v will_v be_v the_o seven_o 1000_o year_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v that_o rest_n that_o remain_v to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n 98._o heb._n 4.9_o isa_n 52.9_o psal_n 96_o &_o 97_o &_o 98._o so_o much_o prophesy_v of_o throughout_o the_o scripture_n when_o the_o whole_a earth_n shall_v be_v at_o rest_n and_o quiet_a and_o shall_v break_v forth_o into_o sing_v sect_n vii_o if_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o premeditate_v on_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n we_o may_v also_o as_o well_o premeditate_v on_o the_o matter_n of_o sing_v and_o if_o such_o premeditate_a matter_n of_o prayer_n and_o singing_n may_v be_v deliver_v in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o limit_v to_o those_o premeditate_a word_n wherefore_o be_v it_o not_o lawful_a to_o use_v prescribe_v form_n answ_n first_o this_o argument_n take_v that_o for_o grant_v which_o be_v no_o wise_a to_o be_v grant_v viz._n that_o vocal_a prayer_n and_o consequent_o sing_v may_v be_v limit_v to_o premeditate_a word_n true_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o premeditate_v on_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n for_o if_o we_o deny_v this_o we_o can_v go_v to_o god_n in_o that_o duty_n with_o a_o sense_n of_o our_o want_n upon_o our_o heart_n and_o that_o the_o same_o want_n which_o we_o be_v sensible_a of_o before_o we_o pray_v may_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v spread_v at_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n in_o prayer_n but_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o to_o limit_v ourselves_o in_o prayer_n to_o any_o premeditate_a matter_n nor_o word_n before_o prayer_n for_o though_o our_o want_n or_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n be_v think_v on_o before_o prayer_n yea_o and_o it_o may_v be_v send_v up_o to_o heaven_n by_o inward_a prayer_n before_o we_o come_v to_o our_o vocal_a duty_n as_o we_o shall_v always_o strive_v to_o maintain_v the_o working_n of_o grace_n in_o our_o heart_n either_o in_o prayer_n or_o praise_n to_o god_n or_o otherwise_o for_o the_o improve_n of_o ourselves_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n yet_o we_o shall_v not_o form_v that_o premeditate_a matter_n to_o tie_v ourselves_o in_o those_o very_a word_n to_o express_v our_o mind_n no_o god_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o vocal_a prayer_n for_o though_o such_o premeditate_a word_n may_v express_v our_o present_a request_n as_o fit_o as_o any_o other_o yet_o to_o limit_v ourselves_o to_o they_o be_v a_o quench_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o that_o our_o heart_n be_v engage_v and_o limit_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o those_o word_n only_o otherwise_o our_o heart_n be_v either_o idle_a or_o differ_v from_o our_o lip_n which_o be_v confusion_n whereby_o we_o be_v bar_v from_o any_o far_o inlarging_n on_o the_o same_o or_o other_o new_a matter_n that_o may_v be_v present_v to_o we_o by_o the_o various_a working_n and_o leading_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o we_o while_o we_o be_v pray_v and_o therefore_o as_o we_o experience_n and_o own_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o the_o various_a working_n and_o leading_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n sometime_o in_o prayer_n we_o must_v then_o deny_v the_o use_n of_o limit_a form_n of_o word_n to_o be_v lawful_a for_o in_o prayer_n we_o be_v sometime_o break_v in_o spirit_n under_o a_o sense_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o have_v our_o heart_n chief_o engage_v in_o humble_a supplication_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o and_o at_o other_o time_n our_o faith_n be_v most_o active_a to_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o precious_a promise_n and_o to_o plead_v with_o god_n and_o when_o the_o spirit_n raise_v our_o soul_n in_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o shed_v the_o love_n of_o god_n abroad_o in_o our_o heart_n then_o our_o mourn_a be_v turn_v into_o thansgiving_n and_o praise_n by_o the_o spirit_n now_o such_o various_a working_n as_o these_o may_v not_o all_o be_v on_o the_o heart_n in_o premeditation_n 4._o rom._n 9.1_o 2._o chap._n 10.1_o and_o chap._n 5.2_o 3._o ephes_n 1.15_o 16_o 17_o 18._o chap._n 3.14_o 16._o phil._n 1.3_o 4._o as_o they_o may_v pass_v on_o the_o soul_n in_o one_o single_a duty_n of_o prayer_n as_o may_v be_v collect_v from_o these_o scripture_n from_o whence_o we_o
may_v see_v that_o the_o holy_a apostle_n in_o his_o constant_a prayer_n for_o those_o church_n have_v the_o mixture_n of_o sorrow_n and_o of_o the_o grace_n of_o joy_n and_o thanksgiving_n to_o god_n but_o some_o may_v far_o say_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n can_v various_o affect_v our_o heart_n and_o direct_v we_o to_o premeditate_a such_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n that_o may_v suit_v the_o different_a act_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o we_o in_o prayer_n and_o this_o reconcile_v the_o use_n of_o a_o stint_a premeditate_a form_n with_o the_o various_a working_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o prayer_n my_o answer_n be_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n can_v predirect_a our_o meditation_n in_o those_o various_a thing_n that_o he_o himself_o may_v help_v to_o engage_v our_o heart_n in_o in_o vocal_a prayer_n according_a to_o the_o same_o stint_a word_n as_o be_v premeditate_v in_o our_o heart_n before_o but_o as_o we_o can_v find_v any_o warrantable_a footstep_n thereof_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n and_o as_o this_o be_v not_o the_o know_a way_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o gospel-worship_n so_o to_o assert_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n do_v predirect_a and_o limit_v the_o form_n of_o prayer_n so_o as_o to_o suit_v his_o various_a act_n in_o we_o while_o we_o be_v pray_v do_v create_v these_o follow_a consequence_n 1._o that_o no_o improvement_n can_v be_v make_v of_o other_o matter_n in_o prayer_n 78.41_o psal_n 78.41_o and_o that_o no_o other_o thing_n can_v be_v expect_v from_o god_n in_o prayer_n than_o what_o our_o thought_n be_v fix_v upon_o before_o prayer_n which_o be_v a_o limit_v and_o tempt_v of_o the_o holy_a one_o of_o israel_n not_o to_o meet_v with_o his_o people_n as_o he_o have_v promise_v those_o who_o remember_v he_o in_o his_o way_n 11.6_o isa_n 64.5_o chap._n 65.24_o dan._n 9.20_o 21._o act_n 10.30_o luke_n 3.21_o act_n 11.6_o and_o as_o the_o lord_n by_o the_o prophet_n say_v while_o they_o be_v yet_o speak_v i_o will_v hear_v and_o as_o daniel_n and_o cornelius_n while_o they_o be_v pray_v have_v a_o message_n from_o god_n in_o answer_n to_o their_o prayer_n and_o also_o jesus_n pray_v the_o heaven_n be_v open_v and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n descend_v in_o a_o bodily_a shape_n like_o a_o dove_n upon_o he_o which_o example_n do_v demonstrate_v that_o god_n be_v wont_v of_o old_a to_o meet_v with_o his_o people_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n and_o it_o be_v the_o daily_a experience_n of_o many_o christian_n 4.8_o james_n 4.8_o that_o while_o they_o be_v draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n god_n be_v draw_v nigh_o to_o their_o soul_n and_o give_v they_o many_o token_n and_o fresh_a assurance_n of_o his_o love_n and_o favour_n to_o they_o 2._o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n to_o we_o to_o neglect_v prayer_n unless_o we_o find_v the_o matter_n preform_v in_o we_o fit_a for_o vocal_a prayer_n for_o if_o the_o spirit_n compose_v the_o matter_n in_o our_o premeditation_n for_o we_o to_o be_v stint_v to_o in_o our_o verbal_a prayer_n than_o we_o must_v wait_v for_o those_o working_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o we_o before_o we_o can_v go_v to_o prayer_n or_o else_o we_o must_v approve_v of_o our_o go_v to_o prayer_n without_o a_o premeditate_a stint_a form_n and_o to_o rely_v on_o the_o gracious_a income_n and_o guidance_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n for_o the_o well-performance_n of_o it_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v 8.26_o rom._n 8.26_o the_o spirit_n also_o help_v our_o infirmity_n for_o we_o know_v not_o what_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v that_o be_v we_o have_v not_o the_o full_a foreknowledge_n of_o what_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o viz._n of_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o prayer_n but_o the_o spirit_n itself_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o viz._n in_o prayer_n with_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v so_o that_o the_o spirit_n itself_o do_v help_v our_o infirmity_n and_o supply_v our_o fore-ignorance_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n which_o we_o may_v not_o have_v a_o full_a and_o sufficient_a knowledge_n of_o but_o by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o prayer_n and_o therefore_o prayer_n must_v not_o be_v limit_v to_o premeditate_a form_n 3._o this_o seem_v to_o reflect_v on_o the_o spirit_n be_v sufficient_a power_n to_o form_v a_o extemporary_a prayer_n as_o though_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o furnish_v the_o soul_n with_o sufficient_a matter_n and_o word_n to_o express_v it_o by_o immediate_o from_o his_o dictate_v but_o that_o he_o must_v first_o have_v time_n to_o precompose_v the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n and_o afterward_o limit_v himself_o to_o it_o lest_o his_o immediate_a help_n and_o guidance_n of_o we_o in_o prayer_n shall_v not_o be_v so_o good_a a_o composure_n for_o our_o acceptance_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n as_o his_o premeditate_a stint_v form_n and_o therefore_o see_v that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o tie_v ourselves_o in_o prayer_n to_o premeditate_a form_n this_o argument_n can_v draw_v in_o a_o prescribe_a form_n of_o prayer_n nor_o sing_v to_o be_v allow_v in_o gospel-worship_n sect_n viii_o obj._n the_o sing_n of_o humane_a precomposed_a stint_a form_n of_o psalm_n and_o hymn_n and_o song_n in_o the_o church_n be_v spiritual_a worship_n if_o their_o matter_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o if_o they_o be_v sing_v with_o grace_n in_o our_o heart_n answer_n first_o 43._o par._n 1._o pag._n 15_o 16_o etc._n etc._n &_o pag._n 43._o that_o such_o form_n be_v not_o spiritual_a worship_n be_v prove_v in_o my_o former_a discourse_n and_o appear_v from_o the_o proof_n i_o have_v make_v herein_o that_o the_o primitive_a gospel-singing_a be_v from_o the_o special_a gift_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o also_o from_o the_o forego_n section_n for_o if_o such_o premeditate_a or_o prescribe_v form_n be_v not_o lawful_a we_o can_v expect_v that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v own_v they_o with_o his_o actual_a presence_n in_o his_o grace_n to_o make_v they_o spiritual_a worship_n unto_o which_o precede_v evidence_n i_o refer_v the_o reader_n and_o shall_v far_o add_v in_o answer_n to_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o this_o objection_n that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o use_n of_o precomposed_a form_n of_o spiritual_a word_n or_o matter_n so_o call_v because_o they_o be_v scriptural_a or_o agree_v to_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n which_o be_v give_v by_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v spiritual_a worship_n because_o a_o soul_n that_o use_v such_o form_n of_o worship_n may_v have_v grace_n in_o his_o heart_n for_o true_a spiritual_a worship_n do_v not_o bare_o consist_v of_o spiritual_a word_n and_o some_o grace_n unless_o they_o be_v spiritual_a word_n from_o grace_n for_o if_o a_o soul_n shall_v be_v pray_v or_o sing_v to_o god_n with_o spiritual_a word_n and_o with_o the_o habit_n of_o grace_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o be_v not_o in_o some_o exercise_n of_o it_o together_o with_o these_o word_n will_v you_o say_v that_o this_o be_v spiritual_a worship_n when_o it_o be_v only_o verbal_a and_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o person_n be_v in_o no_o degree_n active_a with_o they_o no_o sure_o 2._o though_o we_o be_v exhort_v to_o sing_v with_o grace_n in_o our_o heart_n 3.16_o col._n 3.16_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o bare_o spiritual_a prayer_n if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o powerful_a influence_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o form_v it_o in_o our_o heart_n i_o shall_v thus_o answer_v that_o the_o more_o or_o less_o our_o prayer_n be_v form_v and_o produce_v by_o the_o influencing_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o we_o the_o more_o or_o less_o our_o prayer_n be_v spiritual_a prayer_n and_o as_o we_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o the_o least_o exercise_n of_o true_a grace_n in_o our_o heart_n in_o prayer_n give_v essence_n or_o be_v to_o inward_a spiritual_a prayer_n so_o the_o least_o exercise_n of_o gracious_a melodious_a joy_n give_v
