to_o serve_v he_o without_o distraction_n and_o worship_v he_o with_o our_o whole_a soul_n and_o unmixed_a affection_n another_o remedy_n against_o
purge_v and_o refine_v the_o drossy_a mass_n 3._o the_o divine_a grace_n alone_o can_v restore_v health_n and_o vigour_n to_o the_o corrupt_a deprave_a degenerous_a heart_n of_o man._n and_o that_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o most_o natural_a piece_n of_o advice_n that_o whenever_o we_o behold_v any_o evil_n in_o any_o part_n or_o instance_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n we_o present_o lay_v our_o hand_n upon_o our_o breast_n look_v into_o ourselves_o and_o examine_v our_o own_o heart_n it_o be_v folly_n to_o lay_v the_o blame_n upon_o this_o and_o that_o and_o other_o thing_n when_o we_o shall_v trace_v the_o evil_n to_o its_o fountainhead_n it_o be_v most_o true_a that_o all_o the_o vile_a and_o sinful_a thought_n the_o base_a and_o most_o abominable_a lust_n proceed_v from_o the_o heart_n but_o when_o they_o be_v breed_v out_o of_o the_o corruption_n and_o putrefaction_n of_o the_o heart_n itself_o and_o when_o cast_v into_o it_o by_o the_o devil_n it_o be_v not_o so_o easy_a to_o determine_v the_o accurse_a enemy_n of_o our_o soul_n do_v no_o doubt_n lie_v hold_v on_o all_o opportunity_n to_o cast_v into_o our_o mind_n wicked_a thought_n and_o be_v very_o watchful_a of_o the_o time_n and_o season_n when_o to_o corrupt_v and_o debauch_v our_o soul_n and_o make_v they_o yet_o more_o vile_a than_o natural_o they_o be_v and_o therefore_o these_o wicked_a thought_n which_o many_o timorous_a soul_n imagine_v to_o be_v their_o own_o may_v be_v rational_o presume_v to_o be_v he_o there_o be_v indeed_o some_o mark_n which_o probable_o may_v serve_v to_o distinguish_v the_o own_o or_o which_o be_v the_o devil_n be_v as_o for_o those_o that_o be_v the_o immediate_a result_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o devil_n be_v very_o quick_a and_o ready_a to_o improve_v they_o and_o for_o these_o which_o be_v the_o devil_n injection_n our_o corrupt_a heart_n be_v too_o willing_a to_o comply_v with_o they_o so_o that_o we_o must_v think_v ourselves_o equal_o oblige_v to_o guard_v ourselves_o against_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o and_o there_o be_v something_o unquestionable_o in_o our_o power_n in_o order_n to_o it_o we_o can_v do_v something_o towards_o it_o unless_o we_o will_v look_v upon_o ourselves_o as_o machine_n and_o so_o destroy_v both_o reason_n and_o religion_n at_o once_o i_o will_v agree_v that_o by_o a_o hypochondriack_a or_o some_o other_o disease_n or_o by_o a_o long_a series_n and_o habit_n of_o sin_v which_o be_v a_o disease_n more_o inveterate_a and_o hard_a to_o be_v cure_v that_o the_o oeconomy_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n may_v be_v so_o break_v and_o shatter_a that_o the_o power_n of_o think_v be_v become_v very_o weak_a and_o impair_v and_o that_o the_o lassitude_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v as_o great_a almost_o as_o those_o of_o the_o body_n but_o yet_o i_o think_v there_o be_v few_o case_n but_o a_o man_n can_v do_v something_o in_o order_n to_o a_o regular_a think_n few_o man_n be_v arrive_v to_o so_o great_a a_o degree_n of_o either_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o towards_o it_o though_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v some_o can_v do_v much_o more_o than_o other_o our_o bless_a lord_n when_o he_o be_v upon_o earth_n do_v not_o give_v useless_a description_n of_o thing_n and_o deal_v with_o man_n otherwise_o than_o rational_a creature_n and_o therefore_o i_o can_v but_o suppose_v that_o when_o he_o show_v they_o for_o there_o be_v not_o a_o sense_n that_o we_o have_v but_o may_v betray_v and_o ruin_v we_o a_o eye_n a_o hand_n etc._n etc._n may_v prove_v our_o utter_a destruction_n as_o that_o advice_n of_o our_o bless_a lord_n imply_v 8._o wherefore_o if_o thy_o hand_n or_o thy_o foot_n offend_v thou_o cut_v they_o off_o and_o cast_v they_o from_o thou_o it_o be_v better_a for_o thou_o to_o enter_v into_o life_n halt_v and_o maim_a rather_o than_o have_v two_o hand_n or_o two_o foot_n to_o be_v cast_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n and_o if_o thy_o eye_n offend_v thou_o pluck_v it_o out_o and_o world_n be_v hang_v all_o over_o with_o net_n the_o devil_n well_o know_v that_o the_o best_a way_n to_o subdue_v the_o spirit_n be_v by_o the_o flesh_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o they_o leave_v unguarded_a may_v prove_v our_o ruin_n and_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v that_o it_o be_v give_v too_o great_a a_o liberty_n to_o our_o sense_n which_o be_v the_o occasion_n of_o so_o many_o vile_a and_o wicked_a thought_n fill_v our_o mind_n again_o in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o be_v to_o take_v care_n that_o if_o any_o evil_a thought_n of_o what_o kind_n soever_o they_o be_v arise_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n not_o to_o let_v they_o remain_v in_o we_o but_o present_o to_o make_v resistance_n against_o they_o turn_v the_o heart_n immediate_o to_o a_o contrary_a subject_n humble_v our_o soul_n by_o speedy_a repentance_n for_o the_o same_o let_v not_o vain_a thought_n lodge_v in_o we_o 14._o though_o they_o may_v glance_v upon_o we_o it_o be_v dwelling_n upon_o a_o wicked_a thought_n that_o make_v it_o prevail_v and_o domineer_a over_o we_o if_o we_o habitual_o indulge_v it_o it_o will_v get_v ground_n of_o we_o and_o at_o length_n grow_v obstinate_a and_o unruly_a and_o much_o more_o difficult_a to_o be_v conquer_v whereas_o a_o immediate_a resistance_n of_o it_o will_v by_o degree_n so_o weaken_v it_o as_o it_o be_v probable_a we_o shall_v at_o length_n be_v quite_o rid_v of_o it_o though_o this_o may_v be_v think_v a_o very_a troublesome_a yet_o it_o be_v as_o likely_a a_o way_n as_o any_o of_o avoid_v evil_a thought_n when_o any_o wicked_a imagination_n therefore_o present_v itself_o the_o best_a way_n to_o repel_v it_o will_v not_o be_v to_o argue_v and_o dispute_v long_o with_o it_o but_o to_o catch_v away_o our_o mind_n from_o it_o present_o and_o like_o a_o man_n that_o accidental_o tread_v upon_o a_o adder_n start_v back_o immediate_o and_o strive_v to_o make_v no_o more_o approach_n to_o it_o again_o it_o be_v possible_a nay_o likely_a that_o it_o will_v return_v upon_o you_o often_o in_o a_o little_a time_n but_o do_v you_o labour_v as_o often_o as_o it_o do_v so_o to_o thrust_v it_o out_o and_o be_v not_o weary_a of_o so_o do_v and_o because_o this_o be_v not_o so_o easy_a a_o matter_n neither_o though_o this_o or_o nothing_o must_v be_v grant_v to_o be_v in_o our_o power_n it_o will_v be_v expedient_a in_o order_n to_o the_o divert_v our_o mind_n effectual_o that_o we_o propose_v to_o our_o mind_n some_o one_o or_o other_o of_o the_o most_o awful_a subject_n and_o such_o as_o be_v apt_a more_o than_o ordinary_o to_o take_v up_o and_o fix_v our_o thought_n as_o for_o instance_n the_o crucifixion_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n imagine_v that_o we_o see_v his_o torture_a body_n bleed_v upon_o the_o cross_n and_o hear_v the_o doleful_a cry_n which_o he_o utter_v when_o he_o make_v the_o great_a atonement_n and_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o behold_v the_o portentous_a eclipse_n the_o preternatural_a darkness_n the_o rent_v of_o the_o rock_n the_o open_n of_o the_o grave_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o tremendous_a circumstance_n which_o attend_v the_o death_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n or_o else_o let_v it_o be_v the_o last_o judgement_n and_o the_o miscellaneous_n horror_n and_o exultation_n of_o that_o dreadful_a day_n wherein_o the_o heaven_n be_v on_o our_o thought_n and_o by_o the_o delightful_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n praise_n and_o mediditation_n and_o a_o devout_a read_n and_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n it_o will_v by_o god_n blessing_n leave_v such_o a_o happy_a tincture_n on_o we_o and_o so_o pious_o and_o last_o incline_v the_o mind_n to_o good_a that_o it_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a mean_n to_o order_v
we_o not_o think_v that_o this_o be_v a_o too_o common_a occasion_n of_o profane_a and_o blasphemous_a thought_n if_o i_o be_o not_o solicitous_a to_o form_v my_o heart_n aright_o and_o bring_v my_o thought_n of_o the_o great_a god_n into_o a_o due_a frame_n and_o temper_n of_o devotion_n while_o i_o be_o worship_v he_o and_o in_o his_o more_o solemn_a and_o immediate_a presence_n it_o natural_o lead_v i_o as_o well_o provoke_v god_n to_o leave_v i_o to_o gross_a profane_a and_o impious_a thought_n of_o he_o when_o a_o man_n therefore_o be_v about_o to_o perform_v his_o duty_n of_o devotion_n to_o god_n either_o in_o public_a or_o private_a let_v he_o endeavour_v to_o fix_v in_o his_o heart_n such_o thought_n of_o he_o as_o may_v exceed_o awe_v and_o compose_v he_o and_o not_o be_v indevout_a and_o formal_a in_o his_o address_n to_o heaven_n and_o i_o very_o think_v this_o may_v be_v a_o very_a proper_a mean_n to_o preserve_v he_o from_o profane_a or_o blasphemous_a thought_n which_o otherwise_o it_o be_v reasonable_a to_o expect_v will_v grow_v upon_o he_o four_o discontent_n and_o a_o worldly_a anxiety_n be_v that_o which_o how_o far_o soever_o it_o may_v at_o first_o seem_v from_o it_o very_o much_o conduce_v to_o profane_v and_o blasphemous_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n in_o that_o expression_n of_o the_o apostle_n 15._o if_o any_o man_n love_v the_o world_n the_o love_n of_o the_o father_n be_v not_o in_o he_o there_o be_v no_o person_n more_o apt_a to_o arraign_v the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o the_o distribution_n of_o his_o providence_n than_o such_o to_o conceive_v not_o only_o indecent_a angry_a and_o false_a but_o profane_a and_o blasphemous_a notion_n of_o he_o none_o more_o apt_a to_o follow_v the_o desperate_a advice_n of_o job_n wife_n 9_o curse_v god_n and_o die_v than_o such_o worldly_a repine_a discontent_a wretch_n as_o place_v all_o their_o heaven_n here_o and_o that_o this_o be_v true_a i_o think_v be_v a_o matter_n sufficient_o plain_a by_o our_o own_o experience_n and_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o produce_v instance_n not_o a_o few_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v humble_a content_v and_o blessing_n god_n not_o charge_v he_o foolish_o or_o think_v of_o he_o unworthy_o in_o every_o state_n and_o condition_n i_o look_v upon_o to_o be_v part_n of_o the_o mean_n in_o order_n to_o the_o avoid_v profane_a and_o blasphemous_a thought_n another_o rule_n which_o may_v be_v observe_v to_o this_o end_n be_v that_o when_o at_o any_o time_n we_o be_v assault_v with_o such_o profane_a thought_n we_o immediate_o with_o a_o sacred_a fear_n cast_v they_o out_o of_o our_o mind_n for_o profane_v or_o blasphemous_a thought_n be_v especial_o such_o as_o we_o shall_v not_o stay_v to_o argue_v or_o dispute_v with_o and_o therefore_o we_o find_v that_o though_o our_o bless_a lord_n think_v fit_a to_o argue_v with_o the_o devil_n in_o other_o temptation_n yet_o when_o he_o suggest_v profane_a thought_n of_o god_n to_o he_o 10._o our_o saviour_n seem_v to_o vary_v in_o his_o defence_n and_o immediate_o bid_v he_o be_v go_v 11._o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d get_v thou_o hence_o satan_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o it_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n leave_v he_o and_o behold_v angel_n come_v and_o minister_v unto_o he_o whenever_o therefore_o this_o happen_v to_o be_v your_o case_n that_o you_o be_v trouble_v with_o such_o horrid_a profane_a or_o blasphemous_a thought_n of_o god_n immediate_o cast_v they_o out_o do_v not_o let_v your_o mind_n dwell_v upon_o they_o one_o moment_n but_o do_v with_o this_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n in_o particular_a as_o you_o be_v teach_v to_o do_v in_o the_o vii_o direction_n for_o the_o well-governing_a our_o thought_n in_o general_n in_o the_o next_o place_n it_o be_v advisable_v that_o at_o that_o time_n when_o we_o be_v assault_v with_o they_o we_o send_v up_o a_o ejaculation_n to_o heaven_n and_o lift_v up_o our_o heart_n to_o god_n in_o a_o short_a prayer_n that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o cleanse_v our_o heart_n of_o they_o and_o preserve_v we_o from_o they_o when_o any_o such_o abominable_a thought_n present_v itself_o to_o thou_o cry_v out_o o_o lord_n keep_v i_o o_o lord_n save_v i_o o_o lord_n let_v not_o the_o devil_n have_v advantage_n over_o i_o lord_n i_o desire_v to_o love_v and_o adore_v thou_o with_o all_o my_o heart_n with_o all_o my_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o my_o might_n o_o lord_n thou_o know_v that_o i_o be_o grieve_v at_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o and_o earnest_o desire_v to_o have_v my_o thought_n of_o thou_o to_o be_v such_o as_o these_o bless_a spirit_n entertain_v who_o be_v continual_o in_o thy_o blissful_a presence_n etc._n etc._n and_o not_o only_o in_o ejaculatory_a but_o in_o our_o set_a prayer_n and_o constant_a devotion_n shall_v we_o offer_v they_o up_o to_o god_n purge_v and_o acquit_v ourselves_o of_o they_o in_o his_o sight_n and_o lay_v open_a the_o sincere_a and_o vehement_a desire_n of_o our_o soul_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o they_o and_o by_o this_o mean_v it_o be_v hope_v that_o we_o shall_v at_o length_n be_v free_v from_o they_o though_o they_o may_v not_o present_o depart_v from_o we_o but_o continue_v to_o molest_v we_o even_o in_o our_o very_a prayer_n and_o most_o solemn_a duty_n as_o they_o often_o will_v though_o almighty_a god_n may_v suffer_v they_o to_o be_v inject_v into_o our_o mind_n for_o wise_a and_o beneficial_a end_n which_o be_v unseen_a as_o no_o doubt_n he_o frequent_o do_v yet_o i_o think_v this_o be_v what_o very_o well_o become_v one_o that_o be_v afflict_v with_o profane_a or_o blasphemous_a thought_n and_o a_o proper_a way_n to_o ease_v his_o mind_n of_o they_o again_o in_o order_n to_o the_o remedy_v profane_a and_o blasphemous_a thought_n have_v a_o special_a reverence_n of_o the_o name_n of_o god._n never_o hear_v it_o mention_v without_o a_o sacred_a veneration_n and_o awe_n upon_o thy_o soul_n let_v thy_o heart_n bow_v down_o at_o the_o mention_n of_o he_o never_o let_v his_o name_n be_v in_o thy_o mouth_n but_o with_o devotion_n nor_o ever_o hear_v other_o pronounce_v it_o rash_o or_o profane_o in_o common_a swear_n or_o curse_v without_o a_o holy_a dread_n and_o if_o it_o may_v be_v do_v effectual_o a_o sober_a reproof_n a_o customary_a and_o heedless_a name_v the_o name_n of_o god_n lead_v to_o profaneness_n and_o encourage_v blasphemous_a thought_n of_o he_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a evil_a to_o have_v the_o name_n of_o god_n or_o christ_n in_o our_o mouth_n slight_o or_o jest_o or_o upon_o any_o frivolous_a occasion_n or_o in_o the_o repetition_n of_o a_o story_n etc._n etc._n the_o apostle_n say_v 10._o that_o at_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n every_o knee_n shall_v bow_v of_o thing_n in_o heaven_n and_o thing_n in_o earth_n and_o thing_n under_o the_o earth_n all_o the_o heavenly_a host_n pay_v a_o most_o profound_a reverence_n to_o that_o name_n which_o man_n prostitute_v and_o make_v so_o vile_a and_o until_o we_o endeavour_v to_o imitate_v their_o adoration_n we_o shall_v not_o easy_o be_v preserve_v from_o such_o thought_n as_o be_v horrid_o profane_a it_o be_v hard_o to_o imagine_v how_o that_o person_n can_v be_v keep_v from_o think_v unworthy_o of_o god_n who_o make_v nothing_o of_o use_v his_o name_n in_o his_o common_a discourse_n or_o upon_o the_o most_o petty_a occasion_n one_o rule_n more_o which_o i_o will_v recommend_v to_o the_o purpose_n in_o hand_n be_v this_o labour_v to_o know_v god_n if_o thou_o will_v think_v high_o and_o worthy_o of_o he_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n be_v a_o proper_a remedy_n against_o profane_a thought_n now_o there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o god_n which_o we_o may_v not_o seek_v after_o as_o to_o know_v his_o essence_n his_o decree_n etc._n etc._n to_o endeavour_v so_o to_o know_v he_o be_v a_o vain_a as_o well_o as_o a_o presumptuous_a thing_n as_o be_v hint_v before_o in_o this_o chapter_n but_o there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o god_n which_o we_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o make_v our_o search_n and_o study_n viz._n the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o glorious_a attribute_n his_o will_n and_o commandment_n and_o these_o thing_n that_o in_o his_o word_n he_o have_v reveal_v on_o purpose_n to_o be_v know_v in_o order_n to_o man_n be_v present_a happiness_n and_o future_a perfection_n such_o a_o knowledge_n of_o he_o as_o this_o every_o good_a man_n will_v earnest_o endeavour_v after_o and_o use_v all_o mean_n of_o attain_v and_o the_o rather_o because_o it_o be_v indeed_o a_o expedient_a of_o avoid_v such_o profane_a thought_n of_o god_n as_o many_o be_v grievous_o trouble_v with_o ignorance_n be_v here_o so_o far_o from_o be_v the_o mother_n of_o devotion_n that_o nothing_o more_o tend_v
to_o make_v our_o thought_n of_o god_n vile_a and_o blasphemous_a the_o truth_n of_o this_o abundant_o appear_v from_o the_o various_a and_o monstrous_a idolatry_n of_o the_o gentile_a world_n and_o the_o gross_a and_o horrid_a conception_n they_o have_v of_o their_o deity_n and_o also_o from_o the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o that_o gross_a and_o carnal_a way_n of_o worship_n among_o they_o use_v especial_o in_o the_o dark_a age_n of_o popery_n when_o it_o be_v almost_o incredible_a to_o tell_v what_o absurdity_n and_o profaneness_n be_v the_o consequence_n of_o their_o ignorance_n nay_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o even_o among_o ourselves_o some_o have_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n i_o speak_v this_o to_o your_o shame_n and_o until_o they_o have_v until_o they_o do_v attain_v to_o know_v he_o in_o some_o measure_n it_o can_v be_v imagine_v that_o their_o thought_n of_o he_o shall_v be_v rectify_v the_o more_o we_o know_v god_n the_o more_o we_o come_v to_o love_v he_o to_o be_v transport_v with_o he_o and_o to_o have_v the_o most_o high_a and_o noble_a thought_n of_o he_o now_o this_o excellent_a and_o useful_a and_o desirable_a knowledge_n of_o god_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v these_o two_o way_n by_o his_o work_n and_o by_o his_o word_n first_o from_o our_o own_o observation_n of_o the_o stupendous_a frame_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o the_o mighty_a act_n of_o his_o providence_n the_o admirable_a order_n of_o all_o being_n their_o usefulness_n and_o subserviency_n to_o man_n the_o establishment_n of_o kingdom_n and_o empire_n the_o preservation_n and_o government_n of_o his_o church_n both_o his_o judgement_n and_o his_o mercy_n etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n if_o serious_o observe_v and_o consider_v be_v a_o great_a mean_n to_o make_v we_o to_o know_v god_n and_o consequent_o to_o excite_v in_o we_o high_a and_o holy_a thought_n of_o he_o and_o so_o to_o preserve_v we_o from_o all_o profane_a or_o blasphemous_a or_o unworthy_a thought_n of_o he_o and_o as_o we_o may_v come_v to_o know_v god_n by_o our_o own_o attentive_a observation_n of_o the_o great_a work_n of_o his_o creation_n and_o providence_n so_o we_o may_v by_o his_o most_o holy_a word_n and_o indeed_o thence_o alone_o we_o can_v fetch_v our_o true_a idea_n and_o most_o proper_a thought_n of_o god_n the_o scripture_n be_v the_o best_a help_n to_o our_o attain_v the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o wherein_o in_o a_o majestic_a style_n his_o glorious_a attribute_n be_v represent_v to_o we_o his_o goodness_n purity_n power_n justice_n truth_n be_v wonderful_o display_v in_o a_o various_a manner_n by_o description_n historical_a relation_n amaze_a act_n prophecy_n and_o prediction_n precept_n and_o admonition_n and_o surprise_v revelation_n which_o no_o man_n can_v consider_v as_o he_o ought_v but_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v inspire_v with_o holy_a and_o awful_a thought_n of_o the_o great_a god_n and_o admirable_o preserve_v from_o all_o vain_a wicked_a or_o profane_a thought_n which_o prove_v a_o great_a terror_n and_o affliction_n to_o many_o to_o draw_v to_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o chapter_n a_o careful_a and_o humble_a read_n and_o hear_v the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n together_o with_o a_o conscientious_a attendance_n upon_o his_o sacrament_n and_o other_o ordinance_n be_v a_o very_a excellent_a way_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o all_o profane_a or_o blasphemous_a thought_n for_o our_o heart_n by_o this_o mean_n be_v happy_o season_v with_o good_a thing_n and_o god_n holy_a spirit_n convey_v to_o our_o soul_n and_o last_a inclination_n to_o holiness_n be_v apt_a to_o remain_v in_o we_o but_o because_o i_o will_v not_o leave_v these_o poor_a soul_n who_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v disquiet_v and_o terrify_v with_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o without_o some_o further_a security_n comfort_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v please_v further_a to_o consider_v that_o though_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o hate_v and_o abhor_v and_o tremble_v at_o the_o very_a first_o motion_n of_o such_o profane_a impious_a or_o blasphemous_a thought_n yet_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o be_v so_o terrible_o affright_v at_o they_o or_o confound_v with_o they_o as_o many_o and_o these_o good_a christian_n be_v for_o the_o alwise_a god_n do_v frequent_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v tempt_v with_o such_o profane_a thought_n for_o end_n excellent_a and_o beneficial_a to_o our_o own_o immortal_a soul_n as_o to_o humble_v we_o and_o make_v we_o more_o strict_a in_o the_o examination_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n more_o sensible_a of_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o they_o which_o be_v in_o nothing_o more_o discernible_a than_o in_o a_o extravagant_a liberty_n of_o thought_n or_o else_o it_o may_v be_v to_o make_v we_o more_o sober_a in_o our_o understanding_n to_o avoid_v nice_a inquiry_n into_o case_n mysterious_a and_o shun_v all_o enthusiastic_a expectation_n or_o to_o rouse_v up_o the_o dull_a and_o decay_a power_n of_o our_o soul_n or_o it_o may_v be_v to_o try_v our_o faith_n and_o other_o grace_n and_o to_o see_v whether_o we_o will_v love_v he_o when_o he_o think_v fit_a to_o withhold_v his_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a comfort_n from_o our_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o when_o he_o bestow_v they_o upon_o we_o or_o else_o to_o cause_v we_o perhaps_o to_o make_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n our_o high_a end_n in_o all_o our_o performance_n that_o our_o heart_n run_v not_o upon_o any_o mean_a and_o low_a design_n but_o the_o please_a the_o almighty_a be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o end_n of_o our_o be_v or_o else_o it_o may_v be_v to_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o the_o great_a diligence_n in_o make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a and_o not_o to_o let_v our_o eternal_a happiness_n rest_n upon_o such_o uncertainty_n as_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n do_v they_o but_o strive_v to_o get_v as_o much_o assurance_n of_o our_o endless_a welfare_n as_o possible_o we_o be_v able_a and_o consistent_a with_o faith_n hope_n and_o other_o christian_a virtue_n these_o then_o be_v doubtless_o some_o of_o the_o gracious_a end_n for_o which_o god_n be_v please_v to_o suffer_v we_o to_o labour_v under_o such_o thought_n as_o i_o have_v be_v speak_v of_o and_o it_o be_v oftentimes_o the_o case_n of_o good_a christian_n to_o be_v afflict_v with_o they_o these_o poor_a soul_n who_o happen_v at_o any_o time_n to_o be_v disquiet_v with_o they_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o take_v courage_n and_o to_o be_v comfort_v under_o they_o and_o let_v they_o be_v assure_v of_o this_o that_o that_o which_o be_v a_o man_n burden_n 28._o will_v not_o be_v reckon_v as_o his_o sin_n and_o that_o if_o they_o hate_v these_o thought_n more_o because_o they_o be_v dishonourable_a to_o god_n than_o because_o they_o be_v grievous_a and_o troublesome_a to_o themselves_o and_o be_v by_o mean_n of_o they_o make_v more_o watchful_a circumspect_a and_o devout_a than_o they_o before_o be_v then_o satan_n shall_v answer_v for_o they_o and_o not_o they_o the_o devil_n shall_v be_v judge_v for_o all_o these_o profane_a and_o blasphemous_a thought_n which_o they_o deject_a soul_n be_v so_o much_o afflict_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o as_o their_o own_o and_o so_o i_o have_v dispatch_v this_o first_o species_n of_o evil_a thought_n viz._n profane_a and_o blasphemous_a thought_n chap._n vi_o the_o next_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n which_o deserve_v our_o distinct_a consideration_n be_v that_o of_o unclean_a thought_n and_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v more_o danger_n in_o these_o than_o the_o former_a because_o there_o be_v something_o in_o corrupt_a nature_n more_o agreeable_a to_o they_o than_o to_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v apt_a more_o to_o be_v please_v with_o they_o but_o to_o a_o good_a man_n to_o a_o true_a christian_a these_o thought_n be_v no_o less_o disquiet_v and_o hateful_a than_o the_o former_a and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o prescribe_v some_o proper_a remedy_n against_o they_o the_o first_o of_o which_o be_v prayer_n which_o though_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v a_o universal_a remedy_n and_o must_v in_o no_o case_n of_o trial_n be_v pretermit_v for_o if_o any_o man_n lack_v wisdom_n or_o grace_n of_o any_o particular_a kind_n whatsoever_o let_v he_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n say_v st._n james_n who_o give_v to_o all_o man_n liberal_o 5._o and_o upbraid_v not_o yet_o i_o take_v it_o to_o be_v more_o especial_o needful_a here_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v be_v much_o in_o prayer_n if_o we_o find_v ourselves_o to_o be_v assault_v with_o this_o kind_n of_o thought_n we_o must_v make_v it_o a_o part_n of_o our_o constant_a petition_n that_o god_n will_v be_v please_v to_o cleanse_v and_o purify_v the_o thought_n of_o our_o heart_n by_o the_o inspiration_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n that_o he_o will_v mortify_v our_o lustful_a desire_n
impure_a thought_n and_o lustful_a imagination_n which_o i_o shall_v recommend_v to_o you_o be_v the_o serious_a consideration_n of_o the_o purity_n of_o god._n the_o almighty_a be_v a_o god_n of_o infinite_a purity_n and_o holiness_n he_o hate_v all_o uncleanness_n and_o can_v look_v upon_o the_o least_o sin_n or_o pollution_n even_o of_o our_o thought_n with_o approbation_n and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o avoid_v such_o unclean_a thought_n to_o have_v this_o consideration_n frequent_o in_o our_o mind_n viz._n that_o god_n be_v infinite_o pure_a and_o holy_a and_o hate_v all_o kind_n and_o degree_n of_o filthiness_n and_o uncleanness_n this_o questionless_a be_v that_o which_o make_v good_a joseph_n resist_v the_o solicitation_n of_o his_o wanton_a mistress_n with_o 9_o how_o can_v i_o do_v this_o great_a wickedness_n and_o sin_n against_o god_n the_o lord_n will_v dwell_v in_o a_o clean_a habitation_n or_o none_o and_o if_o even_o the_o wicked_a spirit_n will_v have_v their_o house_n sweep_v and_o garnish_v 44._o before_o they_o will_v enter_v in_o sure_o god_n will_v not_o dwell_v in_o a_o worse_o than_o they_o to_o the_o pure_a heart_n alone_o he_o make_v discovery_n and_o communication_n of_o himself_o to_o the_o clean_a soul_n he_o afford_v his_o grace_n and_o comfort_n these_o alone_o he_o bless_v with_o his_o presence_n here_o and_o admit_v into_o his_o beatific_a presence_n hereafter_o these_o only_a can_v enjoy_v god_n for_o these_o alone_o be_v qualify_v to_o enjoy_v he_o hell_n be_v the_o stink_a lake_n of_o all_o uncleanness_n where_o impure_a spirit_n and_o ugly_a fiend_n wallow_v in_o the_o steam_n of_o their_o horrid_a pollution_n but_o heaven_n be_v the_o habitation_n of_o pure_a chaste_a and_o virgin_n soul_n the_o region_n of_o innocence_n the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o lamb_n where_o there_o be_v no_o manner_n of_o thing_n that_o defile_v and_o he_o that_o hope_v to_o come_v thither_o and_o to_o dwell_v with_o god_n everlasting_o 3_o he_o i_o say_v that_o have_v this_o hope_n purify_v himself_o even_o as_o he_o be_v pure_a 4._o who_o say_v the_o psalmist_n shall_v ascend_v into_o the_o hill_n of_o the_o lord_n
