conscionable_a performance_n of_o this_o duty_n of_o discourse_n that_o those_o thing_n we_o do_v not_o so_o sweet_o understand_v before_o by_o discourse_n we_o understand_v they_o better_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o be_v in_o love_n with_o holy_a conference_n for_o beside_o the_o good_a we_o do_v to_o other_o we_o be_v much_o better_v ourselves_o we_o may_v use_v god_n creature_n but_o not_o scrupulous_o nor_o superstitious_o single_v out_o one_o creature_n from_o another_o nor_o yet_o may_v we_o use_v they_o as_o we_o list_v there_o be_v a_o difference_n between_o right_n and_o the_o use_n of_o right_n the_o magistrate_n may_v restrain_v the_o use_n of_o our_o right_n and_o so_o may_v our_o weak_a brother_n in_o case_n of_o scandal_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n be_v we_o yet_o until_o we_o have_v strength_n to_o obey_v wait_v upon_o god_n ordinance_n till_o he_o stir_v in_o thy_o soul_n all_o that_o love_v your_o soul_n attend_v upon_o the_o mean_n
unless_o therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n apply_v what_o christ_n have_v do_v the_o conscience_n will_v not_o be_v satisfy_v the_o best_a man_n in_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n will_v be_v in_o darkness_n and_o call_v their_o state_n into_o question_n if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v not_o convince_v they_o and_o answer_v all_o cavil_v for_o they_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o only_o be_v convince_v at_o the_o first_o by_o the_o spirit_n but_o in_o our_o continue_a course_n of_o christianity_n this_o therefore_o shall_v make_v we_o to_o come_v to_o god_n ordinance_n with_o a_o holy_a devotion_n oh_o lord_n vouch_v safe_a the_o spirit_n of_o revelation_n and_o take_v the_o scale_n from_o my_o eye_n that_o as_o these_o be_v truth_n so_o they_o may_v be_v truth_n to_o i_o do_v thou_o sway_v my_o soul_n that_o i_o may_v cast_v myself_o upon_o thy_o mercy_n in_o christ._n spiritual_a convince_a be_v not_o total_a in_o this_o life_n but_o always_o leave_v in_o the_o heart_n with_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v convince_v weak_o it_o be_v sure_a of_o the_o main_a yet_o it_o be_v toss_v with_o many_o doubt_n and_o fear_n but_o the_o anchor_n be_v in_o heaven_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v so_o far_o convince_v every_o christian_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n as_o preserve_v in_o he_o such_o a_o power_n of_o grace_n as_o to_o cast_v himself_o upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n god_n will_v send_v his_o spirit_n so_o far_o into_o the_o heart_n as_o it_o shall_v not_o betray_v itself_o to_o despair_n he_o will_v let_v such_o a_o beam_n into_o the_o soul_n as_o all_o the_o power_n of_o hell_n shall_v not_o quench_v when_o we_o neglect_v prayer_n and_o set_v upon_o duty_n in_o our_o own_o strength_n and_o in_o confidence_n of_o our_o own_o part_n if_o we_o belong_v to_o god_n we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o miscarry_v though_o another_o man_n perhaps_o may_v prosper_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v continual_o dependent_a upon_o god_n for_o his_o direction_n and_o for_o his_o blessing_n in_o whatsoever_o we_o go_v about_o as_o many_o woman_n because_o they_o will_v not_o endure_v the_o pain_n of_o childbirth_n do_v kill_v their_o child_n in_o the_o womb_n so_o many_o man_n who_o will_v not_o be_v trouble_v with_o holy_a action_n do_v stifle_v holy_a motion_n therefore_o let_v we_o take_v he_o the_o of_o murder_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n but_o let_v we_o entertain_v they_o that_o when_o they_o be_v kindle_v they_o may_v turn_v to_o resolution_n and_o resolution_n into_o practice_n this_o be_v a_o common_a rule_n that_o we_o can_v converse_v with_o company_n that_o be_v not_o spiritual_a but_o if_o they_o vex_v we_o not_o they_o will_v taint_v we_o unless_o we_o be_v put_v upon_o they_o in_o our_o calling_n we_o shall_v therefore_o make_v special_a choice_n of_o our_o company_n and_o walk_v in_o a_o continual_a watchfulness_n it_o be_v rebellion_n against_o god_n for_o a_o man_n to_o make_v away_o himself_o the_o very_a heathen_n can_v say_v that_o we_o must_v not_o go_v out_o of_o our_o station_n till_o we_o be_v call_v it_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o satan_n cast_v thyself_o down_o but_o what_o down_o from_o the_o cross_n but_o he_o show_v his_o strength_n and_o power_n by_o endure_v their_o reproach_n and_o torment_n the_o reason_n why_o many_o christian_n stagger_v and_o be_v so_o full_a of_o doubt_n be_v because_o they_o be_v idle_a and_o labour_v not_o to_o grow_v in_o grace_n therefore_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o mortification_n for_o in_o that_o way_n we_o come_v to_o assurance_n whatsoever_o good_a be_v in_o a_o natural_a man_n be_v deprave_v by_o a_o selfe-end_n self-love_n rule_v all_o his_o action_n he_o keep_v within_o himself_o and_o make_v for_o himself_o he_o be_v a_o god_n to_o himself_o god_n be_v but_o his_o idol_n this_o be_v true_a of_o all_o natural_a man_n in_o the_o world_n they_o make_v themselves_o their_o last_a end_n and_o where_o the_o end_n be_v deprave_v the_o whole_a course_n be_v corrupt_v the_o sense_n of_o assure_a hope_n can_v be_v maintain_v without_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n 2_o pet._n 1._o 10._o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v your_o call_n &_o election_n sure_a insinuate_v that_o it_o will_v not_o be_v have_v without_o it_o it_o be_v the_o diligent_a and_o watchful_a christian_n that_o have_v this_o assurance_n otherwise_o the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v suffer_v we_o to_o be_v in_o a_o damp_n and_o under_o a_o cloud_n if_o we_o stir_v not_o up_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v grace_n in_o the_o exercise_n and_o love_n in_o the_o exercise_n that_o be_v a_o earnest_n and_o so_o faith_n and_o hope_n in_o the_o exercise_n be_v a_o earnest_n iâ—_n grace_n be_v asleep_a you_o may_v have_v grace_n and_o not_o know_v it_o therefore_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o put_v our_o grace_n into_o exercise_n those_o that_o have_v assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n have_v oftentimes_o troublesome_a distraction_n because_o they_o do_v not_o always_o stand_v upon_o their_o guard_n sometime_o they_o be_v lift_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o sometime_o cast_v down_o even_o to_o hell_n yet_o always_o in_o the_o worst_a condition_n there_o be_v something_o leave_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o suggest_v to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v not_o utter_o cast_v off_o he_o to_o who_o this_o pilgrimage_n be_v oversweete_a love_v not_o his_o country_n yet_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n be_v so_o suitable_a to_o our_o nature_n that_o we_o shall_v sit_v by_o they_o but_o that_o god_n follow_v we_o with_o several_a cross_n therefore_o let_v we_o take_v in_o good_a part_n any_o cross_n because_o it_o be_v out_o of_o heavenly_a love_n that_o we_o be_v exercise_v lest_o we_o shall_v surfeit_v upon_o thing_n here_o below_o in_o melancholy_a distemper_n especial_o when_o there_o go_v guilt_n of_o spirit_n with_o it_o we_o can_v see_v nothing_o but_o darkness_n in_o wife_n child_n friend_n estate_n etc._n etc._n here_o be_v a_o pitiful_a darkness_n when_o body_n and_o soul_n and_o conscience_n and_o all_o be_v distemper_v now_o let_v a_o christian_a see_v god_n in_o his_o nature_n and_o promise_n and_o though_o he_o can_v live_v by_o sight_n in_o such_o a_o distemper_n yet_o let_v he_o then_o live_v by_o faith_n though_o god_n do_v world_n see_v not_o the_o happy_a condition_n of_o god_n child_n be_v because_o their_o body_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o same_o infirmity_n with_o the_o worst_a of_o man_n nor_o be_v they_o exempt_v from_o trouble_n they_o be_v also_o subject_a to_o fall_v into_o gross_a sin_n and_o therefore_o worldly_a man_n think_v be_v these_o the_o man_n that_o be_v happy_a than_o we_o they_o see_v their_o cross_n but_o not_o their_o crown_n they_o see_v their_o infirmity_n but_o not_o their_o grace_n they_o see_v their_o misery_n but_o not_o their_o inward_a joy_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n to_o we_o for_o which_o we_o can_v see_v no_o reason_n yet_o we_o must_v reverence_v he_o and_o adore_v his_o counsel_n and_o think_v he_o wise_a than_o we_o when_o we_o be_v diligent_a in_o our_o call_n keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n and_o labour_v for_o a_o carriage_n answerable_a when_o these_o three_o meet_v together_o call_v and_o stand_v and_o wise_a carriage_n than_o whatsoever_o befall_v we_o assoon_o as_o this_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v apprehend_v it_o constrain_v we_o to_o all_o holy_a duty_n not_o as_o fire_v out_o of_o a_o flint_n but_o as_o water_v out_o of_o a_o spring_n the_o by_o his_o spirit_n according_a to_o his_o word_n and_o unto_o his_o glory_n and_o if_o we_o thus_o labour_v to_o approve_v ourselves_o to_o he_o whatsoever_o be_v the_o issue_n we_o shall_v be_v endue_v with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n with_o inward_a peace_n and_o comfort_n have_v carry_v ourselves_o as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v fit_a to_o persuade_v other_o by_o compulsion_n man_n may_v be_v compel_v to_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n but_o not_o to_o faith_n many_o man_n labour_v only_o to_o unfold_v the_o scripture_n for_o the_o increase_n of_o their_o knowledge_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o discourse_v whereas_o the_o special_a intent_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v to_o work_v upon_o the_o heart_n and_o affection_n as_o we_o must_v approve_v ourselves_o to_o god_n and_o to_o our_o own_o conscience_n so_o also_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o other_o not_o to_o their_o humour_n &_o fancy_n that_o they_o may_v witness_v for_o we_o that_o we_o love_v they_o and_o deal_v faithful_o with_o they_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o do_v all_o the_o good_a we_o can_v especial_o to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n that_o be_v redeem_v with_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n if_o we_o deserve_v well_o of_o they_o they_o will_v give_v evidence_n for_o we_o but_o if_o we_o walk_v scandalous_o they_o will_v evidence_n that_o we_o by_o our_o ill_a course_n and_o example_n draw_v they_o to_o ill_a course_n and_o harden_v they_o in_o evil_a it_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n therefore_o to_o approve_v ourselves_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n that_o we_o may_v have_v they_o to_o witness_v for_o we_o that_o such_o man_n of_o who_o we_o have_v deserve_v well_o may_v be_v our_o crown_n at_o the_o last_o day_n a_o man_n do_v then_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n in_o relation_n to_o other_o when_o he_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o can_v deny_v himself_o to_o do_v they_o good_a when_o the_o conscience_n of_o other_o man_n shall_v think_v must_v off_o such_o truth_n as_o come_v near_o make_v they_o fret_v because_o their_o conscience_n tell_v they_o they_o can_v yield_v obedience_n to_o all_o the_o lust_n of_o some_o sin_n have_v get_v
