false_a opinion_n in_o religion_n if_o the_o springhead_n be_v pollute_v the_o stream_n can_v be_v pure_a it_o be_v more_o important_a than_o man_n usual_o think_v for_o a_o good_a life_n but_o that_o which_o i_o suppose_v be_v here_o chief_o intend_v be_v that_o its_o effective_o and_o practical_o pure_a it_o purify_v the_o heart_n act._n 15._o 9_o say_v of_o faith_n which_o in_o some_o sense_n and_o acceptation_n differ_v not_o much_o from_o this_o wisdom_n and_o consequent_o the_o word_n and_o action_n that_o flow_v from_o the_o heart_n this_o purity_n some_o tender_a chastity_n the_o self-love_n profanness_n of_o spirit_n and_o irreligion_n though_o they_o do_v not_o so_o proper_o pollute_v the_o body_n as_o carnal_a uncleanness_n yet_o they_o do_v less_o defile_v the_o soul_n and_o make_v it_o abominable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n those_o apostate_n angel_n call_v unclean_a spirit_n be_v uncapable_a of_o bodily_a defilement_n tho'indeed_o they_o tempt_v and_o inveigle_v man_n to_o it_o their_o own_o inherent_a pollution_n must_v need_v be_v spiritual_a for_o they_o be_v spirit_n idolatry_n in_o scripture_n go_v often_o under_o the_o name_n of_o fornication_n and_o adultery_n and_o indeed_o these_o sin_n may_v mutual_o borrow_v and_o lend_v their_o name_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o idolatry_n may_v well_o be_v call_v spiritual_a unchastity_n and_o unchaste_a love_n carnal_a idolatry_n earthly_a mindedness_n likewise_o be_v a_o impurity_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o apostle_n phrase_n covetousness_n be_v idolatry_n and_o so_o a_o spiritual_a pollution_n yea_o it_o may_v well_o share_v with_o idolatry_n in_o its_o borrow_a name_n and_o be_v call_v adultery_n too_o for_o it_o misbestow_v the_o soul_n prime_a affection_n upon_o the_o creature_n which_o by_o right_n be_v god_n peculiar_a this_o purity_n that_o true_a wisdom_n work_v be_v contrary_a to_o all_o pollution_n we_o know_v then_o in_o some_o measure_n what_o it_o be_v it_o rest_v to_o inquire_v where_o it_o be_v and_o there_o be_v the_o difficulty_n it_o be_v far_o easy_a to_o design_v it_o in_o itself_o then_o to_o find_v it_o among_o man_n who_o can_v say_v i_o have_v make_v my_o heart_n clean_a prov._n 20._o 9_o look_v upon_o the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n and_o you_o may_v know_v at_o first_o sight_n that_o purity_n be_v not_o to_o be_v look_v for_o among_o they_o they_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o come_v near_o they_o much_o less_o do_v dwell_v with_o they_o and_o within_o they_o they_o hate_v the_o very_a semblance_n of_o it_o in_o other_o and_o themselves_z delight_n in_o intemperance_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o licentiousness_n like_o foolish_a child_n strive_v who_o shall_v go_v further_a into_o the_o mire_n these_o can_v say_v they_o have_v make_v clean_o their_o heart_n for_o all_o their_o word_n and_o action_n will_v bely_v they_o if_o you_o come_v to_o the_o mere_a moralist_n the_o world_n be_v honest_a man_n and_o ask_v he_o it_o may_v be_v he_o will_v tell_v you_o he_o have_v cleanse_v his_o heart_n but_o believe_v he_o not_o it_o will_v appear_v he_o be_v not_o yet_o cleanse_v because_o he_o say_v he_o have_v do_v it_o himself_o for_o you_o know_v there_o must_v be_v some_o other_o beside_o man_n at_o this_o work_n again_o he_o rise_v no_o high_a than_o nature_n have_v none_o of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n in_o he_o and_o therefore_o be_v without_o this_o purity_n too_o but_o if_o you_o chance_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o some_o well_o skill_a hypocrite_n every_o thing_n you_o meet_v with_o make_v you_o almost_o confident_a that_o there_o be_v purity_n yet_o if_o he_o be_v strict_o put_v to_o it_o he_o may_v make_v some_o good_a account_n of_o the_o pain_n he_o have_v take_v to_o refine_v his_o tongue_n and_o his_o public_a action_n but_o he_o dare_v not_o say_v he_o have_v make_v claan_n his_o heart_n it_o trouble_v his_o peace_n to_o be_v ask_v the_o question_n he_o never_o intend_v to_o banish_v sin_n but_o to_o retire_v it_o to_o his_o innermost_a and_o best_a room_n that_o so_o it_o may_v jewel_n unseen_a within_o he_o and_o where_o then_o shall_v it_o lodge_v but_o in_o his_o heart_n yet_o possible_o because_o what_o be_v outward_a be_v so_o fair_a and_o man_n can_v look_v deep_a to_o contradict_v he_o he_o may_v embolden_v himself_o to_o say_v he_o be_v inward_o suitable_a to_o his_o appearance_n but_o there_o be_v a_o day_n at_o hand_n that_o shall_v to_o his_o endless_a shame_n at_o once_o discover_v both_o his_o secret_a impurity_n and_o his_o impudence_n in_o deny_v it_o after_o these_o there_o follow_v a_o few_o despise_a and_o melancholy_a person_n at_o least_o as_o to_o outward_a appearance_n who_o be_v almost_o always_o hang_v down_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o purity_n what_o mean_v they_o then_o that_o will_v argue_v themselves_o out_o of_o this_o number_n because_o they_o find_v yet_o much_o dross_n leave_v and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o so_o defecate_v and_o refine_v as_o they_o will_v wish_v to_o be_v on_o the_o contrary_a this_o hatred_n of_o pollution_n testify_v strong_o that_o the_o contrary_a of_o it_o purity_n be_v there_o and_o though_o its_o beginning_n be_v small_a doubt_v not_o it_o shall_v in_o the_o end_n be_v victorious_a the_o smoke_n of_o this_o flax_n show_v indeed_o that_o there_o be_v gross_a matter_n there_o but_o it_o witness_v likewise_o that_o there_o be_v fire_n in_o it_o too_o and_o though_o it_o be_v little_a we_o have_v christ_n own_o word_n for_o it_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v quench_v and_o if_o he_o favour_v it_o no_o other_o power_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o quench_v it_o you_o find_v not_o indeed_o absolute_a holiness_n in_o your_o person_n nor_o in_o your_o best_a performance_n yet_o if_o you_o breath_n and_o follow_v after_o it_o if_o the_o pulse_n of_o the_o heart_n beat_v thus_o if_o the_o main_a current_n of_o your_o affection_n be_v towards_o the_o excellency_n and_o importance_n of_o their_o soul_n who_o life_n and_o happiness_n be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n and_o neither_o consist_v in_o nor_o depend_v upon_o any_o thing_n here_o below_o
