comfort_n so_o that_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o comforter_n you_o see_v by_o represent_v christ_n to_o we_o yea_o it_o be_v a_o great_a comfort_n that_o the_o spirit_n be_v with_o we_o then_o if_o christ_n himself_o be_v with_o we_o it_o be_v a_o great_a comfort_n that_o christ_n be_v present_a with_o we_o by_o his_o spirit_n then_o if_o he_o shall_v be_v present_a with_o we_o by_o his_o body_n then_o the_o comfort_n be_v more_o narrow_a but_o now_o it_o be_v more_o large_a then_o the_o comfort_n be_v more_o outward_a but_o now_o it_o be_v more_o inward_a then_o the_o comfort_n be_v more_o fleshly_a but_o now_o it_o be_v more_o spiritual_a and_o therefore_o let_v we_o take_v in_o this_o comfort_n if_o you_o desire_v to_o make_v the_o most_o of_o the_o presence_n of_o your_o saviour_n in_o the_o spirit_n now_o he_o be_v absent_a from_o you_o in_o the_o body_n as_o you_o must_v take_v in_o the_o comfort_n so_o you_o must_v take_v in_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o even_o as_o christ_n be_v present_a with_o you_o by_o the_o comfort_n so_o he_o be_v present_a with_o you_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o these_o he_o dwell_v among_o we_o though_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n in_o the_o body_n as_o the_o psalmist_n intimate_v psal_n 68.18_o when_o he_o ascend_v up_o on_o high_a he_o receive_v gift_n for_o man_n the_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bestow_v on_o man_n that_o the_o lord_n god_n may_v dwell_v among_o they_o by_o those_o gift_n and_o those_o grace_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n pray_v for_o the_o ephesian_n that_o reason_n 1_o the_o very_a gesture_n or_o the_o utterance_n of_o a_o prayer_n may_v help_v sometime_o to_o raise_v and_o quicken_v the_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o life_n and_o soul_n of_o prayer_n our_o heart_n be_v natural_o dead_a and_o stupid_a and_o profane_a and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o all_o good_a outward_a help_n to_o stir_v up_o zeal_n and_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n in_o they_o and_o to_o this_o end_n they_o have_v be_v use_v by_o the_o saint_n in_o scripture_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o their_o public_a but_o even_o in_o their_o private_a and_o their_o secret_a prayer_n when_o their_o submiss_a and_o humble_a gesture_n can_v have_v no_o influence_n upon_o other_o man_n and_o consequent_o have_v no_o other_o use_n but_o to_o help_v their_o own_o heart_n as_o daniel_n be_v exact_a in_o this_o even_o in_o his_o chamber_n and_o it_o be_v careful_o record_v dan._n 6.10_o he_o kneel_v upon_o his_o knee_n three_o time_n a_o day_n and_o pray_v he_o pray_v three_o time_n the_o lord_n be_v wont_a to_o call_v so_o often_o and_o so_o earnest_o for_o the_o external_a service_n of_o the_o body_n and_o that_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o old_a as_o you_o may_v see_v that_o place_n for_o instance_n 1_o cor._n 6.20_o glorify_v god_n say_v the_o apostle_n there_o and_o that_o not_o in_o your_o spirit_n only_o but_o in_o your_o body_n also_o which_o be_v go_n use_v 1_o now_o be_v it_o so_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v consideration_n have_v not_o only_o of_o the_o matter_n but_o even_o of_o the_o circumstance_n etc._n etc._n then_o first_o it_o serve_v to_o let_v they_o see_v their_o error_n and_o mistake_v who_o utter_o neglect_v such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v who_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o their_o outward_a carriage_n in_o such_o holy_a duty_n but_o rather_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n below_o the_o observation_n of_o a_o christian_a who_o shall_v be_v whole_o and_o entire_o take_v up_o with_o their_o spiritual_a service_n and_o yet_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o holy-ghost_n take_v notice_n of_o a_o gesture_n a_o cast_n of_o the_o eye_n in_o prayer_n and_o set_v it_o down_o in_o white_a and_o black_a we_o need_v not_o doubt_n for_o our_o information_n i_o must_v confess_v the_o great_a defect_n be_v on_o the_o other_o side_n man_n be_v employ_v so_o much_o about_o the_o form_n the_o surface_n and_o the_o outside_n of_o religious_a duty_n many_o time_n that_o they_o neglect_v the_o main_a business_n their_o thought_n be_v exercise_v so_o far_o about_o the_o gesture_n of_o their_o body_n the_o composure_n of_o their_o word_n the_o frame_n of_o their_o voice_n and_o the_o like_a especial_o in_o public_a prayer_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a service_n the_o outward_a work_n be_v infinite_o more_o easy_a and_o there_o be_v much_o more_o ostentation_n in_o it_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n be_v whole_o take_v up_o with_o that_o which_o they_o themselves_o can_v do_v and_o be_v do_v procure_v they_o most_o applause_n from_o other_o man_n but_o yet_o their_o place_v all_o in_o form_n and_o outside_n and_o mind_v nothing_o else_o in_o holy_a duty_n do_v not_o justify_v at_o all_o our_o run_v off_o to_o the_o extreme_a upon_o the_o other_o side_n no_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o even_o as_o hypocrite_n and_o rotten-hearted_a wretch_n may_v be_v so_o intent_n upon_o the_o outside_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n unto_o the_o inside_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o holy_a and_o sincere_a christian_n may_v be_v so_o intent_n upon_o the_o inside_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o unto_o the_o outside_n they_o may_v so_o far_o look_v after_o the_o affection_n and_o the_o zeal_n and_o the_o devotion_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o main_a thing_n to_o be_v look_v to_o that_o they_o may_v have_v no_o thought_n at_o all_o of_o the_o external_n circumstance_n of_o their_o prayer_n the_o gesture_n or_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o utterance_n which_o be_v considerable_a notwithstanding_o as_o i_o have_v make_v it_o plain_a enough_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v whole_o careless_a of_o they_o be_v a_o fail_v yea_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o best_a of_o god_n people_n use_v 2_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o second_o place_n let_v i_o persuade_v you_o to_o think_v such_o outward_a circumstance_n worthy_a of_o your_o thought_n the_o very_a gesture_n and_o the_o utterance_n of_o your_o prayer_n let_v there_o be_v due_a consideration_n have_v of_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v i_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n hinder_v you_o from_o have_v your_o especial_a eye_n on_o that_o whereon_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n be_v most_o when_o you_o be_v make_v your_o approach_n and_o address_n to_o he_o i_o mean_v the_o carriage_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n the_o inward_a fervour_n and_o humility_n affection_n and_o devotion_n of_o the_o heart_n without_o which_o all_o the_o rest_n be_v worth_a nothing_o but_o yet_o let_v not_o the_o gesture_n of_o your_o body_n the_o utterance_n of_o your_o voice_n in_o prayer_n be_v jesus_n christ_n himself_o as_o you_o may_v see_v mat._n 26.39_o not_o that_o this_o gesture_n be_v peculiar_a to_o this_o piece_n of_o service_n but_o it_o be_v take_v from_o the_o civil_a usage_n of_o the_o country_n because_o this_o be_v their_o way_n of_o show_v reverence_n to_o superior_n as_o you_o may_v see_v ruth_n 2.10_o and_o therefore_o we_o do_v well_o and_o suitable_o to_o the_o direction_n and_o example_n of_o the_o scripture_n that_o we_o take_v up_o such_o gesture_n only_o in_o our_o prayer_n as_o be_v usual_a in_o our_o country_n to_o express_v our_o sorrow_n and_o dejection_n or_o else_o our_o civil_a reverence_n and_o respect_n by_o those_o reverend_a gesture_n which_o we_o use_v in_o prayer_n shall_v be_v most_o observe_v in_o public_a there_o may_v more_o liberty_n be_v take_v in_o private_a and_o in_o secret_a then_o there_o may_v in_o public_a and_o open_a prayer_n both_o in_o the_o use_n of_o outward_a gesture_n and_o in_o the_o forbearance_n of_o they_o some_o gesture_n may_v be_v use_v in_o private_a prayer_n which_o will_v become_v we_o ill_o in_o public_a in_o which_o we_o shall_v not_o go_v remarkable_o beyond_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o assembly_n for_o fear_n and_o danger_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o gesture_n on_o the_o other_o side_n may_v be_v forbear_v in_o some_o case_n in_o private_a prayer_n which_o yet_o in_o public_a ought_v not_o to_o be_v so_o for_o evermore_o in_o public_a as_o far_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a our_o gesture_n must_v be_v such_o as_o may_v express_v some_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o we_o may_v honour_v god_n before_o the_o people_n and_o that_o our_o outward_a posture_n may_v not_o carry_v in_o it_o a_o appearance_n of_o a_o sleight_n esteem_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o service_n whereas_o in_o private_a there_o be_v great_a freedom_n because_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o such_o caution_n but_o three_o this_o must_v be_v continual_o heed_v both_o in_o public_a and_o in_o private_a that_o the_o gesture_n which_o we_o use_v be_v such_o as_o that_o we_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o rather_o further_o the_o spiritual_a service_n it_o be_v far_o better_a to_o abate_v of_o the_o reverence_n of_o our_o gesture_n than_o the_o affection_n of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v far_o better_o for_o a_o man_n to_o stand_v in_o prayer_n then_o that_o by_o the_o disease_n and_o trouble_v of_o the_o other_o posture_n he_o shall_v be_v distract_v and_o consequent_o his_o devotion_n and_o his_o heart_n shall_v fall_v that_o may_v be_v allow_v the_o weak_a in_o this_o regard_n which_o will_v not_o be_v convenient_a in_o the_o strong_a the_o bodily_a exercise_n be_v it_o of_o what_o kind_n it_o will_v be_v but_o a_o mean_n to_o the_o spiritual_a service_n the_o end_n be_v better_a than_o the_o mean_n and_o must_v be_v more_o regard_v than_o the_o mean_n i_o must_v not_o use_v the_o mean_n but_o for_o the_o end_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v serviceable_a to_o the_o end_n and_o much_o less_o must_v i_o use_v the_o mean_n aganist_n the_o end_n we_o must_v be_v very_o wary_a that_o the_o outward_a gesture_n especial_o in_o public_a prayer_n do_v not_o exceed_v the_o inward_a affection_n and_o that_o we_o make_v not_o show_v of_o more_o without_o then_o there_o be_v indeed_o within_o for_o if_o we_o do_v there_o be_v hypocrisy_n such_o duty_n be_v not_o do_v in_o truth_n when_o there_o be_v more_o in_o show_n and_o in_o appearance_n than_o there_o be_v in_o substance_n if_o either_o of_o the_o two_o be_v low_a than_o the_o other_o it_o be_v far_o better_a that_o the_o outward_a expression_n be_v low_a than_o the_o inward_a affection_n then_o that_o the_o inward_a etc._n etc._n it_o be_v far_o better_a that_o the_o gesture_n come_v short_a of_o the_o heart_n then_o that_o the_o heart_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o good_a to_o compass_v god_n about_o with_o lie_n mere_a show_n do_v never_o please_v in_o his_o service_n this_o for_o the_o gesture_n of_o your_o body_n when_o you_o pray_v a_o word_n or_o two_o for_o your_o direction_n touch_v the_o use_n or_o the_o omission_n of_o the_o voice_n in_o prayer_n etc._n etc._n and_o here_o the_o first_o thing_n that_o i_o offer_n be_v those_o prayer_n that_o be_v public_a whether_o in_o the_o family_n or_o the_o assembly_n wherein_o one_o be_v the_o mouth_n of_o many_o to_o the_o lord_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v vocal_a so_o be_v our_o saviour_n in_o my_o text_n you_o see_v he_o pray_v with_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n and_o therefore_o do_v no_o only_a form_n a_o prayer_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o express_v it_o with_o his_o mouth_n he_o do_v not_o only_o think_v but_o speak_v that_o they_o may_v hear_v he_o lift_v up_o his_o eye_n to_o heaven_n and_o say_v the_o voice_n be_v not_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n in_o private_a prayer_n for_o however_o man_n who_o have_v body_n be_v endue_v with_o ear_n and_o sense_n know_v not_o our_o meaning_n otherwise_o then_o by_o our_o word_n yet_o god_n who_o be_v himself_o a_o spirit_n know_v the_o meaning_n of_o our_o spirit_n sigh_n may_v find_v audience_n and_o acceptance_n with_o he_o inward_a and_o mental_a supplication_n may_v be_v in_o some_o case_n more_o fit_a than_o vocal_a but_o yet_o if_o other_o circumstance_n will_v permit_v in_o which_o your_o christian_a prudence_n must_v direct_v you_o use_v your_o voice_n we_o shall_v observe_v it_o to_o have_v be_v the_o usual_a practice_n of_o the_o saint_n to_o speak_v in_o prayer_n yea_o in_o private_a prayer_n as_o our_o saviour_n do_v mark_v 10.39_o god_n make_v the_o tongue_n aswell_o as_o other_o member_n of_o the_o body_n and_o therefore_o will_v be_v serve_v with_o this_o as_o well_o as_o they_o and_o so_o the_o prophet_n david_n praise_v god_n with_o the_o best_a member_n that_o he_o have_v which_o some_o expound_v to_o be_v his_o tongue_n and_o therewith_o bless_v we_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n james_n 3.9_o it_o be_v sometime_o a_o quicken_a to_o the_o heart_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o dead_a affection_n to_o great_a fervency_n and_o zeal_n which_o by_o continue_v in_o a_o mental_a supplication_n will_v be_v apt_a to_o languish_v and_o decay_v it_o keep_v in_o the_o heart_n from_o wander_a by_o bind_v it_o to_o give_v exact_a attendance_n on_o the_o tongue_n to_o furnish_v it_o with_o matter_n and_o expression_n whereas_o in_o mental_a prayer_n it_o be_v more_o apt_a to_o slide_v away_o and_o run_v a_o rove_a unobserved_a howbeit_o here_o i_o shall_v not_o peremptory_o prescribe_v in_o certain_a case_n to_o omit_v the_o voice_n be_v more_o expedient_a and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v shut_v up_o all_o and_o leave_v it_o to_o your_o christian_a prudence_n to_o direct_v you_o to_o pitch_v upon_o that_o way_n and_o method_n of_o present_v your_o request_n to_o god_n which_o you_o will_v find_v most_o to_o conduce_v to_o the_o affectionate_a spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a performance_n of_o the_o duty_n and_o thus_o of_o the_o transition_n to_o our_o saviour_n supplication_n together_o with_o the_o manner_n of_o present_v it_o to_o god_n the_o father_n both_o his_o gesture_n and_o expression_n proceed_v we_o now_o to_o enter_v on_o the_o prayer_n which_o he_o make_v and_o here_o i_o shall_v take_v notice_n only_o of_o these_o two_o thing_n the_o object_n of_o it_o and_o the_o part_n of_o it_o the_o object_n of_o it_o or_o the_o person_n who_o he_o present_v it_o to_o you_o see_v be_v god_n the_o father_n or_o to_o come_v a_o little_a near_o god_n his_o father_n so_o he_o style_v he_o in_o the_o entrance_n of_o his_o prayer_n father_n the_o hour_n be_v come_v etc._n etc._n and_o the_o same_o phrase_n he_o use_v all_o along_o as_o you_o shall_v see_v if_o you_o survey_v it_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o it_o to_o the_o end_n indeed_o he_o give_v he_o once_o the_o attribute_n of_o holy_a and_o once_o the_o attribute_n of_o righteous_a father_n but_o this_o be_v still_o the_o appellation_n that_o he_o use_v and_o from_o whence_o he_o never_o vary_v if_o he_o call_v he_o any_o thing_n he_o call_v he_o father_n and_o in_o this_o notion_n he_o consider_v he_o while_o he_o be_v put_v up_o his_o prayer_n to_o he_o and_o therefore_o this_o you_o see_v my_o brethren_n be_v the_o first_o word_n that_o he_o use_v when_o he_o set_v himself_o to_o pray_v father_n the_o hour_n be_v come_v etc._n etc._n i_o make_v these_o address_n to_o thou_o as_o a_o father_n i_o look_v upon_o thou_o as_o a_o father_n still_o while_o i_o be_o pour_v out_o my_o prayer_n to_o thou_o and_o therefore_o he_o review_v the_o
appellation_n ever_o and_o anon_o on_o all_o occasion_n so_o that_o the_o point_n to_o be_v observe_v be_v this_o doctrine_n god_n be_v the_o father_n of_o the_o lord_n christ_n and_o so_o he_o own_v one_o another_o under_o the_o relation_n of_o a_o father_n and_o a_o son_n sometime_o the_o father_n own_v our_o saviour_n for_o his_o son_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o a_o immediate_a attestation_n out_o of_o heaven_n itself_o mat._n 3.17_o lo_o a_o voice_n from_o heaven_n say_v this_o be_v my_o belove_a son_n me_n think_v he_o seem_v to_o point_v he_o out_o to_o special_a it_o to_o you_o in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o you_o must_v consider_v that_o god_n the_o father_n have_v two_o sort_n of_o son_n either_o he_o have_v son_n make_v or_o else_o he_o have_v son_n beget_v he_o have_v son_n make_v and_o that_o both_o by_o creation_n and_o adoption_n first_o he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o father_n by_o creation_n and_o thus_o he_o have_v a_o kind_n of_o universal_a fatherhood_n to_o all_o the_o creature_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n style_v he_o the_o father_n of_o all_o eph._n 4.6_o he_o be_v in_o this_o regard_n the_o father_n of_o our_o body_n and_o the_o father_n of_o our_o spirit_n the_o father_n of_o our_o body_n mediate_o and_o virtual_o create_v in_o the_o loin_n of_o adam_n the_o father_n of_o our_o spirit_n immediate_o and_o actual_o infuse_v by_o himself_o with_o this_o distinction_n only_o that_o there_o be_v man_n who_o under_o he_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o flesh_n but_o he_o himself_o alone_o be_v the_o father_n of_o son_n make_v by_o creation_n so_o he_o have_v son_n make_v by_o adoption_n by_o which_o a_o remnant_n of_o mankind_n be_v set_v apart_o out_o of_o the_o free_a and_o undeserved_a grace_n of_o god_n creature_n and_o then_o he_o have_v adopt_v we_o by_o he_o as_o part_v of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o as_o member_n of_o his_o body_n and_o as_o this_o father_n have_v his_o son_n make_v both_o by_o creation_n and_o adoption_n so_o he_o have_v his_o son_n beget_v and_o his_o son_n bear_v for_o both_o of_o these_o expression_n we_o shall_v find_v in_o scripture_n he_o have_v beget_v we_o say_v for_o christ_n disciple_n to_o be_v at_o near_a unity_n among_o themselves_o but_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o how_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o a_o man_n will_v think_v it_o shall_v be_v no_o hard_a matter_n may_v be_v you_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v it_o to_o be_v otherwise_o but_o mark_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v james_n 4.1_o from_o whence_o come_v war_n and_o fight_n among_o you_o whence_o do_v for_o this_o there_o will_v not_o be_v such_o endless_a and_o implacable_a contention_n about_o matter_n civil_a as_o there_o be_v sometime_o between_o those_o that_o be_v christ_n disciple_n it_o be_v their_o pride_n that_o neither_o side_n will_v stoop_v or_o bow_v both_o be_v high_a and_o both_o be_v stiff_a and_o so_o there_o can_v no_o possible_a accommodation_n or_o accord_n be_v make_v now_o my_o brethren_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o that_o have_v not_o christ_n spirit_n desire_v these_o outward_a blessing_n that_o he_o may_v consume_v they_o on_o his_o lust_n as_o the_o full_a delight_n and_o fare_v delicious_o every_o day_n agur_n measure_v the_o conveniency_n or_o inconveniency_n of_o his_o outward_a state_n as_o it_o will_v fit_v he_o more_o or_o less_o for_o god_n service_n not_o poverty_n lest_o i_o deny_v thou_o not_o riches_n leave_v i_o forget_v thou_o but_o these_o man_n measure_v it_o by_o nothing_o but_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o so_o their_o prayer_n serve_v their_o lust_n and_o they_o will_v have_v god_n himself_o to_o serve_v they_o too_o if_o they_o can_v prevail_v with_o he_o and_o be_v such_o desire_n as_o these_o like_a to_o which_o be_v the_o spirit_n enemy_n the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n lu_v against_o the_o flesh_n for_o those_o two_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o another_o and_o will_v never_o sin_v and_o where_o they_o shall_v never_o suffer_v any_o more_o where_o holiness_n and_o happiness_n shall_v be_v both_o perfect_a where_o there_o be_v fullness_n of_o joy_n and_o pleasure_n for_o evermore_o and_o to_o be_v with_o christ_n there_o of_o who_o immediate_a prefence_n true_a believer_n be_v inavoidable_o debar_v as_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v in_o this_o world_n while_o have_v sanctify_v we_o also_o and_o so_o prepare_v we_o for_o life_n and_o salvation_n for_o without_o holiness_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o see_v the_o lord_n to_o be_v admit_v as_o inhabitant_n into_o that_o holy_a habitation_n concern_v which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v say_v there_o shall_v no_o unclean_a thing_n enter_v into_o it_o rev_n 21.27_o and_o therefore_o our_o redeemer_n sanctify_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o we_o not_o that_o we_o may_v be_v justify_v only_o and_o so_o deliver_v from_o hell_n and_o utter_a darkness_n but_o that_o we_o may_v be_v sanctify_v also_o and_o so_o make_v meet_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o inheritance_n with_o the_o saint_n in_o light_n our_o saviour_n sanctify_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o we_o not_o only_o that_o reason_n 2_o we_o may_v be_v justify_v but_o that_o we_o may_v be_v sanctify_v also_o because_o he_o have_v a_o purpose_n and_o design_n not_o to_o glorify_v we_o only_o but_o to_o glorify_v himself_o in_o this_o business_n and_o more_o particular_o and_o distinct_o to_o glorify_v himself_o in_o we_o and_o to_o glorify_v himself_o by_o we_o 1._o it_o be_v the_o project_n and_o design_n of_o christ_n in_o this_o great_a work_n of_o he_o to_o glorify_v himself_o in_o we_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v not_o justify_v we_o only_o but_o sanctify_v we_o too_o for_o have_v he_o justify_v we_o only_o from_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o transgression_n his_o glory_n have_v appear_v indeed_o upon_o we_o to_o wit_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n but_o which_o way_n have_v his_o glory_n show_v itself_o in_o we_o but_o now_o by_o sanctify_v we_o and_o by_o enrich_v we_o with_o all_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n which_o far_o exeee_v the_o bright_a and_o orient_a pearl_n both_o in_o lustre_n and_o in_o value_n his_o glory_n shine_v forth_o in_o we_o now_o he_o we_o glorify_v in_o his_o saint_n as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n speak_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o grace_n appear_v in_o they_o and_o sparkle_v forth_o with_o dazzle_a lustre_n and_o as_o in_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n be_v see_v his_o wisdom_n and_o his_o power_n and_o godhead_n and_o the_o like_a so_o in_o the_o renovation_n and_o the_o new_a creation_n of_o some_o certain_a person_n in_o it_o be_v see_v the_o riches_n of_o his_o grace_n he_o do_v it_o that_o he_o may_v make_v know_v his_o glory_n as_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d that_o he_o may_v declare_v it_o in_o the_o vessel_n of_o his_o mercy_n prepare_v by_o he_o unto_o glory_n rom._n 9.23_o and_o as_o the_o greatness_n and_o magnificence_n of_o any_o prince_n be_v see_v in_o the_o revenue_n and_o the_o title_n and_o the_o dignity_n of_o those_o who_o he_o have_v raise_v and_o advance_v so_o in_o our_o present_a gracious_a privilege_n and_o endowment_n prepare_v we_o for_o glory_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v be_v see_v the_o unsearchable_a riches_n of_o christ_n 2._o it_o be_v the_o project_n and_o design_n of_o christ_n in_o this_o great_a work_n of_o he_o to_o glorify_v himself_o by_o we_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v not_o justify_v we_o only_o but_o sanctify_v we_o too_o for_o have_v we_o not_o be_v sanctify_v we_o shall_v have_v dishonour_v christ_n in_o our_o whole_a conversation_n but_o be_v once_o regenerate_v and_o endow_v with_o save_v grace_n and_o purify_v as_o a_o peculiar_a people_n to_o himself_o than_o we_o glorify_v our_o saviour_n then_o we_o show_v forth_o the_o virtue_n and_o with_o they_o the_o praise_n of_o he_o that_o have_v save_v we_o we_o cause_v our_o work_n to_o shine_v before_o man_n and_o jesus_n christ_n who_o strengthen_v we_o to_o shine_v in_o they_o now_o be_v it_o so_o my_o brethren_n that_o christ_n do_v not_o set_v himself_o apart_o etc._n etc._n use_v 1_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n but_o for_o his_o people_n sake_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v sanctify_v by_o this_o mean_n my_o exhortation_n shall_v be_v somewhat_o suitable_a to_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n on_o the_o like_a occasion_n gal._n 5.13_o take_v heed_n you_o use_v not_o this_o incomparable_a grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n christ_n as_o a_o occasion_n to_o the_o flesh_n by_o take_v any_o kind_n of_o licence_n thence_o to_o give_v it_o satisfaction_n in_o the_o reprove_v for_o their_o licentious_a course_n they_o satisfy_v themselves_o with_o this_o that_o christ_n have_v satisfy_v for_o they_o and_o that_o not_o only_o for_o their_o past_a and_o present_a sin_n but_o for_o their_o sin_n to_o come_v also_o so_o that_o they_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a to_o act_v they_o nor_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o after_o they_o have_v do_v they_o but_o i_o must_v tell_v they_o christ_n have_v not_o satisfy_v for_o they_o if_o he_o do_v not_o sanctify_v they_o he_o have_v not_o set_v himself_o apart_o to_o to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o they_o if_o he_o do_v not_o set_v they_o apart_o to_o be_v a_o holy_a and_o peculiar_a people_n to_o himself_o and_o unto_o such_o as_o turn_v this_o grace_n into_o licentiousness_n i_o say_v as_o moses_n do_v sometime_o to_o israel_n do_v you_o thus_o requite_v the_o lord_n o_o foolish_a people_n and_o unwise_a oh_o hellish_a people_n and_o profane_a yea_o i_o protest_v against_o they_o in_o the_o word_n prevail_v can_v be_v tender_v
to_o our_o thought_n then_o this_o be_v ah_o my_o beloved_n be_v there_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n but_o this_o alone_a to_o quicken_v we_o and_o egg_n we_o on_o to_o purity_n and_o a_o holy_a conversation_n no_o peace_n of_o conscience_n wait_v on_o it_o no_o inward_a joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n no_o fruit_n of_o sanctity_n no_o reward_n of_o it_o neither_o in_o the_o present_a life_n nor_o in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v whereas_o it_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o both_o i_o say_v my_o brethren_n be_v there_o nothing_o else_o to_o move_v we_o this_o of_o itself_o be_v sufficient_a to_o persuade_v viz._n that_o christ_n in_o all_o those_o torment_n those_o abasure_n those_o agony_n and_o horror_n which_o he_o suffer_v when_o he_o sanctify_v himself_o and_o set_v himself_o apart_o to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n the_o father_n aim_v at_o this_o that_o he_o may_v sanctify_v we_o to_o himself_o that_o we_o for_o who_o he_o suffer_v may_v be_v holy_a and_o shall_v we_o now_o like_o base_a unthankful_a and_o unworthy_a wretch_n endeavour_v to_o the_o utmost_a of_o our_o power_n to_o thwart_v and_o cross_v he_o in_o his_o purpose_n to_o frustrate_v and_o make_v void_a his_o end_n have_v he_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v be_v pure_a and_o shall_v we_o notwithstanding_o be_v profane_a have_v he_o shed_v his_o precious_a blood_n to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v be_v holy_a and_o shall_v we_o notwithstanding_o be_v unclean_a be_v this_o the_o reckon_n that_o we_o make_v of_o all_o those_o exquisite_a and_o those_o unutterable_a pang_n and_o torture_n which_o our_o saviour_n suffer_v when_o not_o his_o body_n only_o but_o his_o soul_n be_v make_v a_o offering_n for_o sin_n that_o we_o regard_v not_o though_o he_o suffer_v they_o in_o vain_a i_o say_v to_o you_o my_o brethren_n as_o the_o church_n lament_n 1.12_o be_v it_o nothing_o to_o you_o all_o you_o that_o pass_v by_o shall_v all_o those_o wound_n those_o stripe_n those_o horror_n he_o endure_v those_o stream_n of_o precious_a blood_n be_v shed_v in_o vain_a oh_o think_v upon_o it_o you_o that_o rot_v away_o in_o your_o corruption_n and_o that_o by_o welter_v in_o the_o gore_n of_o your_o abominable_a sin_n and_o though_o you_o have_v be_v frequent_o advise_v &_o entreat_v &_o beseech_v to_o wash_v you_o and_o to_o make_v you_o clean_o yet_o be_v resolve_v to_o be_v filthy_a still_o for_o you_o make_v the_o son_n of_o god_n as_o much_o as_o in_o you_o lie_v to_o suffer_v &_o to_o die_v in_o vain_a you_o spill_v this_o precious_a blood_n and_o tread_v it_o under_o foot_n and_o be_v assure_v of_o this_o your_o sin_n be_v infinite_o great_a and_o your_o damnation_n will_v be_v heavy_a in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o therefore_o as_o king_n david_n once_o when_o his_o three_o worthy_n have_v adventure_v to_o fetch_v he_o water_n from_o the_o well_o of_o bethel_n with_o the_o apparent_a and_o extreme_a hazard_n of_o their_o life_n refuse_v utter_o to_o drink_v it_o or_o to_o taste_v of_o it_o be_v it_o far_o from_o i_o say_v he_o for_o be_v not_o this_o the_o blood_n of_o these_o man_n 2_o sam._n 23.17_o even_o so_o say_v you_o when_o you_o be_v tempt_v and_o entice_v by_o satan_n or_o your_o lust_n to_o any_o fin_n to_o be_v drunken_a or_o unclean_a or_o to_o defraud_v or_o overreach_v your_o brother_n or_o the_o like_a oh_o be_v it_o far_o from_o i_o to_o do_v this_o thing_n for_o be_v not_o this_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n he_o shed_v his_o blood_n to_o purify_v i_o and_o to_o make_v i_o clean_o from_o such_o sin_n as_o these_o be_v be_v it_o so_o that_o christ_n etc._n etc._n oh_o how_o shall_v this_o astonish_v all_o profane_a use_n 3_o and_o graceless_a person_n i_o think_v the_o thought_n of_o this_o shall_v even_o break_v their_o heart_n amid_o their_o great_a earthly_a pleasure_n and_o contentment_n for_o what_o do_v they_o imagine_v that_o christ_n will_v fail_v of_o his_o intention_n or_o that_o he_o will_v attain_v but_o half_o his_o purpose_n that_o since_o he_o sanctify_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n the_o father_n for_o his_o people_n that_o they_o may_v be_v sanctify_v he_o will_v ever_o justify_v and_o save_v they_o who_o he_o never_o sanctifi_v that_o he_o will_v fall_v short_a of_o that_o which_o be_v his_o scope_n and_o aim_n in_o this_o business_n oh_o foolish_a fancy_n and_o absurd_a imagination_n nay_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o have_v say_v yea_o he_o have_v swear_v the_o contrary_a and_o if_o you_o will_v not_o take_v his_o word_n i_o hope_v you_o will_v believe_v his_o oath_n this_o the_o be_v oath_n that_o he_o have_v swear_v that_o all_o they_o that_o be_v save_v by_o he_o from_o the_o guilt_n and_o from_o the_o punishment_n of_o all_o their_o sin_n shall_v serve_v he_o too_o in_o holiness_n so_o that_o if_o any_o filthy_a and_o unsanctified_a person_n shall_v be_v save_v jesus_n christ_n must_v be_v forswear_v which_o be_v blasphemous_a to_o imagine_v and_o thus_o we_o have_v at_o length_n dispatch_v the_o first_o part_n of_o our_o saviour_n prayer_n for_o the_o church_n and_o be_v arrive_v at_o the_o second_o in_o the_o first_o place_n he_o pray_v as_o i_o have_v show_v you_o for_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n then_o about_o he_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n that_o then_o be_v who_o be_v already_o call_v and_o sanctify_v who_o god_n have_v give_v he_o out_o of_o the_o world_n i_o pray_v for_o they_o say_v he_o i_o pray_v not_o for_o the_o world_n and_o this_o part_n of_o the_o prayer_n he_o shut_v up_o with_o the_o verse_n which_o we_o have_v even_o now_o end_v and_o now_o my_o brethren_n in_o the_o second_o place_n he_o come_v to_o pray_v for_o those_o who_o be_v after_o to_o be_v call_v by_o their_o preach_n or_o their_o writing_n who_o be_v to_o be_v the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n that_o be_v to_o come_v neither_o pray_v i_o for_o these_o alone_a but_o for_o they_o also_o that_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n and_o here_o we_o have_v in_o general_a these_o two_o main_a thing_n to_o be_v consider_v 1._o christ_n description_n of_o the_o person_n for_o who_o he_o now_o become_v a_o suitor_n to_o his_o father_n they_o which_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n 2._o the_o matter_n of_o the_o prayer_n which_o he_o make_v for_o these_o person_n that_o they_o may_v all_o be_v one_o as_o thou_o father_n be_v in_o i_o and_o i_o in_o thou_o and_o so_o on_o at_o this_o time_n we_o shall_v enter_v on_o the_o first_o of_o these_o and_o that_o be_v christ_n description_n of_o the_o person_n for_o who_o he_o now_o become_v a_o suitor_n to_o his_o father_n and_o they_o in_o general_n be_v true_a believer_n who_o be_v describe_v three_o way_n first_o by_o the_o time_n of_o their_o faith_n they_o be_v not_o such_o as_o do_v believe_v when_o christ_n put_v up_o his_o supplication_n to_o his_o father_n but_o such_o as_o shall_v believe_v in_o aftertime_n second_o by_o the_o object_n of_o their_o faith_n they_o shall_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n three_o by_o the_o instrumental_a mean_n of_o this_o faith_n they_o shall_v believe_v in_o christ_n through_o the_o apostle_n word_n i_o shall_v speak_v a_o word_n or_o two_o of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o time_n by_o which_o our_o saviour_n here_o describe_v those_o for_o who_o he_o pray_v they_o be_v not_o such_o as_o do_v believe_v when_o christ_n put_v up_o this_o supplication_n to_o his_o father_n but_o such_o as_o shall_v believe_v in_o aftertime_n neither_o pray_v i_o for_o these_o only_a for_o my_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n who_o believe_v in_o i_o already_o but_o for_o they_o also_o who_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n so_o that_o you_o see_v doctrine_n our_o saviour_n intercession_n be_v not_o confine_v to_o those_o who_o believe_v but_o it_o extend_v to_o those_o who_o shall_v believe_v though_o for_o the_o present_a they_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o in_o they_o it_o reach_v to_o believer_n by_o election_n to_o all_o that_o be_v appoint_v to_o believe_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n i_o pray_v say_v christ_n for_o they_o also_o for_o all_o they_o which_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n and_o as_o god_n love_v believer_n by_o election_n though_o for_o the_o present_a they_o be_v unbeliever_n as_o i_o have_v show_v you_o very_o late_o so_o christ_n pray_v for_o all_o such_o indeed_o he_o die_v for_o all_o such_o for_o all_o such_o as_o shall_v believe_v and_o not_o for_o such_o alone_a as_o do_v believe_v and_o therefore_o he_o must_v needs_o pray_v for_o all_o such_o for_o both_o the_o branch_n of_o
