Jekezkel Ezekiel the priest the son of Buzi in the land of the Caldeans by the river Chebar and the hand of the LORD was there upon him 4 ¶ And I looked and behold a whirlwind came out of the north a great cloud and a fire † Heb. catching it self infolding it self and a brightness was about it and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber out of the midst of the fire 5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures And this was their appearance They had the likeness of a man 6 And every one had four faces and every one had four wings 7 And their feet were † Heb. a strait foot strait feet and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calves foot and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass 8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides and they four had their faces and their wings 9 Their wings were joyned one to another they turned not when they went they went every one strait forward 10 As for the likeness of their faces they four had the face of a man and the face of a lion on the right side and they four had the face or an ox on the left side they four also had the face of an eagle 11 Thus were their faces and their wings were ‖ Or art●●● a●●● stretched upward two wings of every one were joyned one to another and two covered their bodies 12 And they went every one strait forward whither the spirit was to go they went and they turned not when they went 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures their appearance was like burning coals of fire and like the appearance of lamps it went up and down among the living creatures and the fire was bright and out of the fire went forth lightning 14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning 15 ¶ Now as I beheld the living creatures behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures with his four faces 16 The ap●earance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl and they four had one
last things high things which the most High will do unto them that dwell upon earth in the last days So I slept that night and another like as he commanded me CHAP. XI 1 He seeth in his dream an eagle coming out of the sea 37 and a lion out of a wood talking to the eagle THen saw I a dream and behold there came up from the sea an eagle which had twelve feathered wings and three heads 2 And I saw and behold she spread her wings over all the earth and all the winds of the air blew on her and were gathered together 3 And I beheld and out of her feathers there grew other contrary feathers and they became little feathers and small 4 But her heads were at rest the head in the midst was greater then the other yet rested † Lat. sa it with the residue 5 Moreover I beheld and so the eagle flew with her feathers and reigned upon earth and over them that dwelt therein 6 And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her and no man spake against her no not one creature upon earth 7 And I beheld and so the eagle rose upon her talons and spake to her feathers saying 8 Watch not all at once sleep every one in his own place and watch by course 9 But set the heads be preserved for the last 10 And I beheld and so the voice went not out of her heads but from the midst of her body 11 And I numbred her contrary feathers and behold there were eight of them 12 And I looked and behold on the right side there arose one feather and reigned over all the earth 13 And so it was that when it reigned the end of it came and the place thereof appeared no more so the next following stood up and reigned and had a great time 14 And it hapned that when it reigned the end of it came also like as the first so that it appeared no more 15 Then came there a voice unto it and said 16 Hear thou that hast born rule over the earth so long this I say unto thee before thou beginnest to appear no more 17 There shall none after thee attain unto thy time neither unto the half thereof 18 Then arose the third and reigned as the other before and appeared no more also 19 So went it with all the residue one after another as that every one reigned and then appeared no more 20 Then I beheld and so in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side that they might rule also and some of them ruled but within a whise they appeared no more 21 For some of them were set up but ruled not 22 After this I looked and behold the twelve feathers appeared no more nor the two little feathers 23 And there was no more upon the eagles body but three heads that rested and six little wings 24 Then saw I also that two little feathers divided themselves from the six and remained under the head that was upon the right side for the four continued in their place 25 And I beheld and so the feathers that were under the wing thought to set up themselves and to have the rule 26 And I beheld and so there was one set up but shortly it appeared no more 27 And the second was sooner away then the first 28 And I beheld and so the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign 29 And when they so thought behold there awaked one of the heads that were at rest namely it that was in the midst for that was greater then the two other heads 30 And then I saw that the two other heads were joyned with it 31 And behold the head was turned with them that were with it and did eat up the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned 32 But this head put the whole earth in fear and bare rule in it over all those that dwelt upon the earth with much oppression and it had the governance of the world more then all the wings that had been 33 And after this I beheld and so the head that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more like as the wings 34 But there remained the two heads which also in like sort ruled upon the earth and over those that dwelt therein 35 And I beheld and so the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side 36 Then I heard a voice which said unto me Look before thee and consider the thing that thou seest 37 And I beheld and so as it were a roaring lion chased out of the wood and I saw that he sent out a mans voice unto the eagle and said 38 Hear thou I will talk with thee and the Highest shall say unto thee 39 Art not thou it that remainest of the four beasts whom I made to reign in my world that the end of their times might come through them 40 And the fourth came and over came all the beasts that were past and had power over the world with great fearfulness and over the whole compass of the earth with much wicked oppression and so long time dwelt he upon the earth with deceit 41 For the earth hast thou not judged with truth 42 For thou hast afflicted the meek thou hast hurt the peaceable thou hast loved liars and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit and hast cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm 43 Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the Highest and thy pride unto the Mighty 44 The Highest also hath looked upon the proud times and behold they are ended and his abominations are fulfilled 45 And therefore appear no more thou eagle nor thy horrible wings nor thy wicked feathers nor thy malicious heads nor thy hurtful claws nor all thy vain body 46 That all the earth may be refreshed and may return being delivered from thy violence and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her CHAP. XII 1 The eacle which be saw is destroyed 10 The vision is interpreted 37 He is bid to write his visions 39 and to fast that he may see more 46 He doth comfort those that were grieved for his absence ANd it came to pass whiles the lion spake these words unto the eagle I saw 2 And behold the head that remained and the four wings appeared no more and the two went unto it and set themselves up to reign and their kingdom was small and full of uproar 3 And I saw and behold they appeared no more and the whole body of the eagle was burnt so that the earth was in great fear then awaked I out of the trouble and trance of my minde and from great fear and said unto my spirit 4 Lo this hast thou done unto me in that thou searchest out the ways of the Highest 5 Lo yet am I weary in my minde and very weak in
and he that buildeth as he that shall not dwell therein 43 He that soweth as if he should not reap so also he that planteth the vineyard as he that shall not gather the grapes 44 They that marry as they that shall get no children and they that marry not as the widowers 45 And therefore they that labour labour in vain 46 For strangers shall reap their fruits and spoil their goods overthrow their houses and take their children captives for in captivity and famine shall they get children 47 And they that occupy their merchandise with robbery the more they deck their cities their houses their possessions and their own persons 48 The more will I be angry with them for their sin saith the Lord. 49 Like as an whore envieth a right honest and vertuous woman 50 So shall righteousness hate iniquity when she decketh her self and shall accuse her to her face when he cometh that shall defend him that diligently searcheth out every sin upon earth 51 And therefore be ye not like thereunto nor to the works thereof 52 For yet a little and iniquity shall be taken away out of the earth and righteousness shall reign among you 53 Let not the sinner say that he hath not sinned for God shall burn coals of fire upon his head which saith before the Lord God and his glory I have not sinned 54 Behold the Lord knoweth all the works of men * Luke 16.15 their imaginations their thoughts and their hearts 55 Which spake but the word Let the earth be made * Gen. 1.1 and it was made Let the heaven be made and it was created 56 In his word were the stars made and he knoweth the * Psal 147.4 number of them 57 He searcheth the deep and the treasures thereof he hath measured the sea and what it containeth 58 He hath shut the sea in the midst of the waters and with his word hath he hanged the earth upon the waters 59 He spreadeth out the heavens like a vault upon the waters hath he founded it 60 In the desert hath he made springs of water and pools upon the tops of the mountains that the flouds might pour down from the high rocks to water the earth 61 He made man and put his heart in the midst of the body and gave him breath life and understanding 62 Yea and the Spirit of Almighty God which made all things and searcheth out all hidden things in the secrets of the earth 63 Surely he knoweth your inventions and what you think in your hearts even them that sin and would hide their sin 64 Therefore hath the Lord exactly searched out all your works and he will put you all to shame 65 And when your sins are brought forth ye shall be ashamed before men and your own sins shall be your accusers in that day 66 What will ye do or how will you hide your sins before God and his angels 67 Behold God himself is the judge fear him leave off from your sins and forget your iniquities to meddle no more with them for ever so shall God lead you forth and deliver you from all trouble 68 For behold the burning wrath of a great multitude is kindled over you and they shall take away certain of you and feed you ‖ Or being unable to ref●●● being idle with things offered unto idols 69 And they that consent unto them shall be had in derision and in reproach and troden under foot 70 For there shall be in every place and in the next cities a great insurrection upon those that fear the Lord. 71 They shall be like mad-men sparing none but still spoiling and destroying those that fear the Lord. 72 For they shall waste and take away their goods and cast them out of their houses 73 Then shall they be known who are my chosen and they shall be tried as the gold in the fire 74 Hear O ye my beloved saith the Lord behold the days of trouble are at hand but I will deliver you from the same 75 Be ye not afraid neither doubt for God is your guide 76 And the guide of them who keep my commandments and precepts saith the Lord God let not your sins weigh you down and let not your iniquities lift up themselves 77 Wo be unto them that are bound with their sins and covered with their iniquities like as a field is covered over with bushes and the path thereof covered with thorns that no man may travel through 78 It is ‖ Or shut out left undressed and is cast into the fire to be consumed therewith ¶ TOBIT CHAP. peaceable for all men 9 Both by changing our purposes and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding 10 For Aman a Macedonian the son of Amadatha being indeed a stranger from the Persian bloud and far distant from our goodness and as a stranger received of us 11 Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation as that he was called our father and was continually honoured of all men as the next person unto the king 12 But he not bearing his great dignity went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life 13 Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction as well of Mardocheus who saved our life and continually procured our good as also of blameless Esther partaker of our kingdom with their whole nation 14 For by these means he thought finding us destitute of friends to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians 15 But we finde that the Jews whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction are no evil-doers but live by most just laws 16 And that they be children of the most High and most Mighty living God who hath ‖ Or prosperth ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitours in the most excellent manner 17 Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha 18 For he that was the worker of these things is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family God who ruleth all things speedily rendring vengeance to him according to his deserts 19 Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places that the Jews may freely live after their own laws 20 And ye shall aid them that even the same day being the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar they may be avenged on them who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them 21 For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day wherein the chosen people should have perished 22 You shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting 23 That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well-affected Persians but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction 24 Therefore every city and countrey whatsoever which shall not do according to these things shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword and shall be made not onely unpassable for men but also most hateful to wilde beasts and fowls for ever ¶ The WISDOM of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 2 To whom God sheweth himself 4 and wisdom her self 6 An evil speaker cannot his hid 12 We procure our own destruction 13 For God treated not death LOve * 1 King 3.3 Isa 56.1 righteousness ye that be judges of the earth think of the Lord with a good heart and in simplicity of heart seek him 2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not and sheweth himself unto such as do not * Deut. 4.29 2 Chr. 15.4 distrust him 3 For froward thoughts separate from God and his power when it is tried ‖ Or maketh manifest reproveth the unwise 4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin 5 * Jer. 4.22 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit and remove from thoughts that are without understanding and ‖ Or is rebuked or s●with it sdf will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in 6 For wisdom is a * Gal. 5.22 loving spirit and will not acquit a blasphemer of his ‖ Or l●●● words for God is witnes of his reins and a true beholder of his heart and a hearer of his tongue 7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world and that which ‖ Or upholdeth containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid neither shall vengeance when it punisheth pass by him 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the found of his words shall come unto the Lord for the ‖ Or reproving manifestation of his wicked deeds 10 For the ear of jealousie heareth all things and the noise of murmurings is not hid 11 Therefore beware of murmuring which is unprofitable and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret that shall go for nought and the mouth that ‖ Or sandereth belieth slayeth the soul 12 Seek not death in the errour of your life and pull not upon your selves * Deut. 4.23 24. destruction with the works of your hands 13 For God made not death neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living 14 For he created all things that they might have their being and the generations of the world ●ere healthful and there is no poison of destruction in them nor the kingdom of death upon the earth 15 For righteousness is immortal 16 But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them for when they thought to have it their friend they consumed to nought and made a covenant with it because they are worthy to take part with it CHAP. II. 1 The wicked think this life short 5 and of no other after this 6 Therefore they will take their pleasure in this 10 and conspire against the just 21 What that is which doth blinde them FOr the ungodly said reasoning with themselves but not aright * Job 7.1 Our life is short and tedious * Mat. 22.23 1 Cor. 15.32 and in the death of a man there is no remedy neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave 2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke and a little spark in the moving of our heart 3 Which being extinguished our body shall be turned into ashes and our spirit shall vanish as the ‖ Or ●●●ist soft air 4 And our name shall be forgotten in time and no man shall have our works in remembrance and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud and shall be dispersed as a mist that is driven away with the beams of the sun and ‖ Or oppressed overcome with the heat thereof 5 * 1 Chr. 29.15 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away and after our end there is no returning for ‖ Or be it is fast sealed so that no man cometh again 6 Come on therefore let us enjoy the good things * Isa 22.13 35 12. 1 Cor. 15.32 that are present and let us ‖ Or ●●nestly speedily use the creatures like as in youth 7 Let us fill our selves with costly wine and ointments and set no flower of the spring pass by us 8 Let us crown our selves with rose-buds before they be withered
36 But I said unto you that ye also have seen me and beleeve not 37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out 38 For I came down from heaven not to do mine own will but the will of him that sent me 39 And this is the Fathers will which hath sent me that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing but should raise it up again at the last day 40 And this is the will of him that sent me that every one which seeth the Son and beleeveth on him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day 41 The Jews then murmured at him because he said I am the bread which came down from heaven 42 And they said * Mat. 23.55 Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph whose father and mother we know how is it then that he saith I came down from heaven 43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them Murmure not among yourselves 44 No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him and I will raise him up at the last day 45 * Is 54.13 Jer. 31.34 It is written in the prophets And they shall be all taught of God Every man therefore that hath heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me 46 Not that any man hath seen the Father * Mat. 11.27 save he which is of God he hath seen the Father 47 Verily verily I say unto you He that beleeveth on me hath everlasting life 48 I am that bread of life 49 Your fathere did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead 50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven if any man eat of this bread he shall live for ever and the bread that I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world 52 The Jews therefore strove amongst themselves saying How can this man give us his flesh to eat 53 Then Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blond ye have no life in you 54 Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my bloud hath eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day 55 For my flesh is meat indeed and my blond is drink indeed 56 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blond dwelleth in me and I in him 57 As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father so he that eateth me even he shall live by me 58 This is that bread which came down from heaven not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever 59 These things said he in the synagogue as he taught in Capernaum 60 Many therefore of his disciples when they had heard this said This is an hard saying who can hear it 61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it he said unto them Doth this offend you 62 * Chap. 3 1● What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before 63 It is the spirit that quickneth the flesh profiteth nothing the words that I speak unto you they are spirit and they are life 64 But there are some of you that beleeve not For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that beleeved not and who should betray him 65 And he said Therefore said I unto you that no man can come unto me except it were given unto him of my Father 66 ¶ From that time many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve Will ye also go away 68 Then Simon Peter answered him Lord to whom shall we go thou hast the words of eternal life 69 * Mat. 16 1● And we beleeve and are sure that thou art that Christ the Son of the living God 70 Jesus answered them Have not I chosen you twelve and one of you is a devil 71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon for he it was that should betray him being one of the twelve CHAP. VII 1 Jesus reproveth the ambition and heldness of his kinsmen 10 goeth up from Galilee to the feast of tabernacles 14 teacheth in the temple 40 Divers opinions of him among the people 45 The Pharisees are angry that their officers took him not chide with Nicodemus for taking his part AFter these things Jesus walked in Galilee for he would not walk in Jury because the Jews sought to kill him 2 * Levit. 23.34 Now the Jews feast of tabernacles was at hand 3 His brethren therefore said unto him Depart hence and go into Judea that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret and he himself seeketh to be known openly If thou do these things shew thy self to the world 5 For neither did his brethren beleeve in him 6 Then Jesus said unto them My time is not yet come but your time is alway ready 7 The world cannot hate you but me it hateth because I testifie of it that the works thereof are evil 8 Go ye up unto this feast I go not up yet unto this feast * Chap. 8.20 for my time is not yet full come 9 When he had said these words unto them he abode still in Galilee 10 ¶ But when his brethren were gone up then went he also up unto the feast not openly but as it were in secret 11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast and said Where is he 12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him for some said He is a good man others said Nay but he deceiveth the people 13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews 14 ¶ Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught 15 And the Jews marvelled saying How knoweth this man ‖ Or learning letters having never learned 16 ●esus answered them and said My doctrine is not mine but his that sent me 17 If any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of God or whether I speak of my self 18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory but he that seeketh his glory that sent him the same is true and no unrighteousness is in him 19 * Exod. 24.2 Did not Mos●s give you the law and yet none of you keepeth the law * Ch. 5.18 Why go ye about to kill me 20 The people an●wered and said Thou hast a devil who goeth about to kill thee 21 Jesus answered and said unto them I have done one work and ye all marvel 22 * Levit. 12.3 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision not

XIX 6 The holy Ghost is given by Pauls hands 9 The Jews blaspheme his doctrine which is confirmed by miracles 13 The Jewish exorcists 16 are beaten by the devil 19 Conjuring books are burnt 24 Demetrius for love of gain raiseth an uproar against Paul 35 which is appeased by the town clerk ANd it came to pass that while Apollos was at Corinth Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus and finding certain disciples 2 He said unto them Have ye received the holy Ghost since ye beleeved And they said unto him We have not so much as heard whether there be any holy Ghost 3 And he said unto them Unto what then were ye baptized And they said Unto Johns baptism 4 Then said Paul * Matth. 3.11 John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance saying unto the people That they should beleeve on him which should come after him that is on Christ Jesus 5 When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them the holy Ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied 7 And all the men were about twelve 8 And he went into the synagogue and spake boldly for the space of three moneths disputing and perswading the things concerning the kingdom of God 9 But when divers were hardned and beleeved not but spake evil of that way before the multitude he departed from them and separated the disciples disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus 10 And this continued by the space of two years so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus both Jews and Greeks 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons and the diseases departed from them and the evil spirits went out of them 13 ¶ Then certain of the vagabond Jews exorcists took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus saying We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew and chief of the priests which did so 15 And the evil spirit answered and said Jesus I know and Paul I know but who are ye 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leapt on them and overcame them and prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus and fear fell on them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified 18 And many that beleeved came confessed shewed their deeds 19 Many also of them which used curious arts brought their books together and burned them before all men and they counted the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver 20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed 21 After these things were ended Paul purposed in the spirit when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia to go to Jerusalem saying After I have been there I must also see Rome 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministred unto him Timotheus and Erastus but he himself stayed in Asia for a season 23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way 24 For a certain man named Demetrius a silver-smith which made silver shrines for Diana brought no small gain unto the craftsmen 25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation and said Sirs ye know that by this craft we have our wealth 26 Moreover ye see and hear that not alone at Ephesus but almost throughout all Asia this Paul hath perswaded and turned away much people saying that they be no gods which are made with hands 27 So that not onely this our craft is in danger to be set at nought but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised and her magnificence should be destroyed whom all Asia and the world worshippeth 28 And when they heard these sayings they were full of wrath and cryed out saying Great is Diana of the Ephesians 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus men of Macedonia Pauls companions in travel they rushed with one accord into the theatre 30 And when Paul would have entred in unto the people the disciples suffered him not 31 And certain of the chief of Asia which were his friends sent unto him desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre 32 Some therefore cried one thing and some other for the assembly was confused and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude the Jews putting him forward And Alexander beckned with the hand and would have made his defence unto the people 34 But when they knew that he was a Jew all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out Great is Diana of the Ephesians 35 And when the town-clerk had appeased the people he said Ye men of Ephesus what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is † Gr. the templekeeper a worshipper of the great goddess Diana and of the image which fell down from Jupiter 36 Seeing then that these things cannot bespoken against ye ought to be quiet and to do nothing rashly 37 For ye have brought hither these men which are neither robbers of churches nor yet blasphemers of your goddess 38 Wherefore if Demetrius and the craftsmen which are with him have a matter against any man ‖ Or t●●●urt-days are kept the law is open and there are deputies let them implead one another 39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters it shall be determined in a ‖ Or ordinary lawful assembly 40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this days uproar there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse 41 And when he had thus spoken he dismissed the assembly CHAP. XX. 1 Paul goeth to Macedonia 7 He celebrateth the Lords
the flesh to live after the flesh 13 For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die but if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the * Gal. 4.6 Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 16 The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 17 And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity not willingly but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope 21 Because the creature it self also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God 22 For we know that ‖ Or every creature the whole creation groaneth and travelleth in pain together until now 23 And not only they but our selves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit even we our selves groan within our selves waiting for the adoption to wit the * Luke 21.28 redemption of our body 24 For we are saved by hope But hope that is seen is not hope for what a man seeth why doth he yet hope for 25 But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit it self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the minde of the Spirit ‖ Or that because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose 29 For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called and whom he called them he also justified and whom he justified them he also glorified 31 What shall we then say to these things If God be for us who can be against us 32 He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth 34 Who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the right hand of God who also maketh intercession for us 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword 36 As it is written * Psal 44.22 For thy sake we are killed all the day long we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter 37 Nay in all these things we are more then conquerers through him that loved us 38 For I am perswaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come 39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHAP. IX 1 Paul is sorry for the Jews 7 All the seed of Abraham were not the children of the promise 18 God hath mercy upon whom he will 21 The potter may do with his clay what he list 25 The calling of the Gentiles and rejecting of the Jews were foretold 32 The cause why so few Jews embraced the righteousness of faith I Say the truth in Christ I lie not my conscience also bearing me witness in the holy Ghost 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart 3 For I could wish that myself were ‖ Or separated accursed from Christ for my brethren my kinsmen according to the flesh 4 Who are Israelites to whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory and the ‖ Or testaments covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises 5 Whose are the fathers and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all God blessed for ever Amen 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect For they are not all Israel which are of Israel 7 Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children but in * Gen. 21.12 Isaac shall thy seed be called 8 That is They which are the children of the flesh these are not the children of God but * Gal. 4.28 the children of the promise are counted for the seed 9 For this is the word of promise * Gen 18.10 At this time will I come and Sara shall have a son 10 And not onely this but when Rebecca also had conceived by one even by our father Isaac 11 For the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil that the purpose of God according to election might stand not of works but of him that calleth 12 It was said unto her The * Gen. 25.23 ‖ Or greater elder shall serve the ‖ Or lesser younger 13 As it is written * Mal. 1.2 3. VI. 1 The Corinthians must not vex their brethren in going to law with them 6 especially under infidels 9 The unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God 15 Our bodies are the members of Christ 19 and temples of the holy Ghost 16 17 they must not therefore be defiled DAre any of you having a matter against another go to law before the unjust and not before the saints 2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world if the world shall be judged by you are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters 3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels how much more things that pertain to this life 4 If then ye have judgements of things pertaining to this life set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church 5 I speak to your shame Is it so that there is not a wise man amongst you no not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren 6 But brother goeth to law with brother and that before the unbeleevers 7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you because ye go to law one with another * Mat. 6.39 Luke 6 2● Rom. 12.19 why do ye not rather take wrong why do ye not rather suffer your selves to be defrauded 8 Nay you do wrong and defraud and that your brethren 9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God Be not deceived neither fornicatours nor idolaters nor adulterers nor effeminate nor abusers of themselves with mankinde 10 Nor theeves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God 11 And such were * Tit. 3.3 some of you but ye are washed but ye are sanctified but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God 12 * Chap. 20.23 All things are lawful unto me but all things are not ‖ Or profitable expedient all things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any 13 Meats for the belly and the belly for meats but God shall destroy both it and them Now the body is not for fornication but for the Lord and the Lord for the body 14 And God hath both raised up the Lord and will also raise up us by his own power 15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot God forbid 16 What know ye not that he which is joyned to an harlot is one body for * Gen. 2.24 Matth. 19.5 Eph. 5.31 two saith he shall be one flesh 17 But he that is joyned unto the Lord is one spirit 18 Flee fornication Every sin that a man doeth is without the body but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body 19 What * Chap. 3.16 know ye not that your body is the temple of the holy Ghost which is in you which ye have of God and ye are not your own 20 For * Chap. 7.33 ye are bought with a price therefore glorifie God in your body and in your spirit which are Gods CHAP. VII 2 He treateth of marriage 4 shewing it to be a remedy against fornication 10 and that the bond thereof ought not lightly to be dissolved 18 20 Every man must be content with his vocation 25 Virginity wherefore to be embraced 35 And for what respects we may either marry or abstain from marrying NOw concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me It is good for a man not to touch a woman 2 Nevertheless to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife and let every woman have her own husband 3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence and likewise also the wife unto the husband 4 The wife hath not power of her own body but the husband and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body but the wife 5 Defraud you not one the other except it be with consent for a time that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer and come together again that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency 6 But I speak this by permission and not of commandment 7 For I would that all men were even as I my self but every man hath his proper gift of God one after this manner another after that 8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows It is good for them if they abide even as I. 9 But if they cannot contain let them marry for it is better to marry then to burn 10
And unto the married I command yet not I but the Lord * Matth. 9.32 19.9 Mark 10.11 Luke 16.18 Let not the wife depart from her husband 11 But and if she depart let her remain unmarried or he reconciled to her husband and let not the husband put away his wife 12 But to the rest speak I not the Lord If any brother hath a wife that beleeveth not and she be pleased to dwell with him let him not put her away 13 And the woman which hath an husband that beleeveth not and if he be pleased to dwell with her let her not leave him 14 For the unbeleeving husband is sanctified by the wife and the unbeleeving wife is sanctified by the husband else were your children unclean but now are they holy 15 But if the unbeleeving depart let him depart A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases but God hath called us † Gr. in peace to peace 16 For what knowest thou O wife whether thou shalt save thy husband or how knowest thou O man whether thou shalt save thy wife 17 But as God hath distributed to every man as the Lord hath called every one so let him walk and so ordain I in all churches 18 Is any man called being circumcised let him not become uncircumcised is any called in uncircumcision let him not become circumcised 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God 20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called 21 Art thou called being a servant care not for it but if thou mayest be made free use it rather 22 For he that is called in the Lord being a servant is the Lords † Gr. made free free-man likewise also lie that is called being free is Christs servant 23 * Chap. 6.20 Ye are bought with a price be not ye the servants of men 24 Brethren let every man wherein he is called therein abide with God 25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord yet I give my judgement as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful 26 I suppose therefore that this is good for the present ‖ Or necessity distress I say that it is good for a man so to be 27 Art thou bound unto a wife seek not to be loosed Art thou loosed from a wife seek not a wife 28 But and if thou marry thou hast not sinned and if a virgin marry she hath not sinned nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh but I spare you 29 But this I say brethren the time is short It remaineth that both they that have wives be as though they had none 30 And they that weep as though they wept not and they that rejoyce as though they rejoyced not and they that buy as though they possessed not 31 And they that use this world as not abusing it for the fashion of this world passeth away 32 But I would have you without carefulness He that is unmarried careth for the things the belong to the Lord how he may please the Lord 33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world how he may please his wife 34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord that she may be holy both in body and in spirit but she that is married careth for the things of the world how she may please her husband 35 And this I speak for your own profit not that I may cast a snare upon you but for that which is comely and that you may attend upon the Lord without distraction 36 But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin if she pass the flower of her age and need so require let him do what he will he sinneth not let them marry 37 Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart having no necessity but hath power over his own will and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin doeth well 38 So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better 39 * Rom. ● 2 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth but if her husband be dead she is at liberty to be married to whom she will onely in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide after my judgement and I think also that I have the Spirit of God CHAP. VIII 1 To abstain from meats offered to idols 8 9 We must not abuse our Christian liberty to the offence of our brethren 11 but must bridle our knowledge with charity NOw as touching things offered unto idols we know that we all have knowledge Knowledge puffeth up but charity edifieth 2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know 3 But if any man love God the same is known of him 4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols we know that * Chap. 10.19 an idol is nothing in the world and that there is none other God but one 5 For though there be that are called gods whether in heaven or in earth as there be gods many and lords many 6 But to us there is but one God the Father of whom are all things and we ‖ Or for him Rom. 11.36 in him and one Lord Jesus Christ by whom are all things and we by him 7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol and their conscience being weak is defiled 8 But meat commendeth us not to God for neither if we eat ‖ Or have we the more are we the better neither if we eat not ‖ Or have we the less are we the worse 9 But take heed lest by any means this ‖ Or power liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak 10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idols temple shall not the conscience of him that is weak be † Gr edified emboldned to eat those things which are offered to idols 11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish for whom Christ died 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren and wound their weak conscience ye sin against Christ 13 Wherefore * Rom. 14.21 if meat make my brother to offend I will eat no flesh while the world standeth lest I make my brother to offend CHAP. IX 1 He sheweth his liberty 7 and that the minister ought to live by the gospel 15 yet that himself hath of his own accord abstained 18 to be either chargeable unto them 22 or offensive unto any in matters indifferent 14 Our life is like unto
have you ignorant 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led 3 Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus ‖ Or anathema accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the holy Ghost 4 Now * Rom. 12.4 c. there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit 5 And there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God which worketh all in all 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit 9 To another faith by the same Spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit 10 To another the working of miracles to another prophesie to another discerning of spirits to another divers kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues 11 But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit dividing to every man severally as he will 12 For as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is Christ 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jews or † Gr. Greeks Gentiles whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spirit 14 For the body is not one member but many 15 If the foot shall say Because I am not the hand I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 16 And if the ear shall say Because I am not the eye I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 17 If the whole body were an eye where were the hearing if the whole were hearing where were the smelling 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him 19 And if they were all one member where were the body 20 But now are they many members yet but one body 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee nor again the head to the feet I have no need of you 22 Nay much more those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honourable upon these we ‖ Or put on bestow more abundant honour and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness 24 For our comely parts have no need but God hath tempered the body together having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked 25 That there should be no ‖ Or division schism in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another 26 And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it 27 Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular 28 And * Eph. 4.11 God hath set some in the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healings helps governments ‖ Or kinds diversities of tongues 29 Are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all ‖ Or powers workers of miracles 30 Have all the gifts of healing do all speak with tongues do all interpret 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way CHAP. XIII 1 All gifts 2 3 how excellent soever are nothing worth without charity 4 The praises thereof and 13 prelation before hope and faith THough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal 2 And though I have the gift of prophesie and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have no charity I am nothing 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned have not charity it profiteth me nothing 4 Charity suffereth long and is kinde charity envieth not charity ‖ Or is not rash vaunteth not itself is not puffed up 5 Doth not behave it self unseemly seeketh not her own is not easily provoked thinketh no evil 6 Rejoyceth not in iniquity but rejoyceth ‖ Or with the truth in the truth 7 Beareth all things beleeveth all things hopeth all things endureth all things 8 Charity never faileth but whether there be prophesies they shall fail whether there be tongues they shall cease whether there be knowledge it shall vanish away 9 For we know in part and we prophesie in part 10 But when that which is perfect is come then that which is in part shall be done away 11 When I was a childe I spake as a childe I understood as a childe I ‖ Or reasoned thought as a childe but when I became a man I put away childish things 12 For now we see through a glass † Gr. in a riddle darkly but then face to face now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known 13 And now abideth faith hope charity these three but the greatest of these is charity CHAP. XIV 1 Prophesie is commended 2 3 4 and preferred before speaking with tongues 6 by a comparison drawn from musical instruments 12 Both must be referred to edification 22 as to their true and proper end 26 The true use of each is taught 29 and the abuse taxed 34 Women are forbidden to speak in the church FOllow after charity and desire spiritual gifts but rather that ye may prophesie 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man † Gr. beareth understandeth him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesieth edifieth the church 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth then he that speaketh with tongues except he interpret that the church may receive edifying 6 Now brethren if I come unto you speaking with tongues what shall I profit you except I shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying or by doctrine 7 And even things without life giving sound whether pipe or harp except they give a distinction in the ‖ Or a tunes sounds how shall it be known what is piped or harped 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battel 9 So likewise you except ye utter by the tongue words † Gr. significant easie to be understood how shall
resurrection of the dead 22 For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive 23 But * 1 Thess 4.15 every man in his own order Christ the first-fruits afterward they that are Christs at his coming 24 Then cometh the end when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God even the Father when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power 25 For he must reign * Psal 110.1 till he hath put all enemies under his feet 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death 27 For he * Psal 8.6 hath put all things under his feet But when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him that God may be all in all 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead 30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour 31 I protest by ‖ Some read our your rejoycing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord I die daily 32 If ‖ Or to speak after the manner of men after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus what advantageth it me if the dead rise not * Isa 22.23 let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die 33 Be not deceived evil communications corrupt good manners 34 Awake to righteousness and sin not for some have not the knowledge of God I speak this to your shame 35 But some man will say How are the dead raised up and with what body do they come 36 Thou fool that which thou sowest is not quickned exceptit die 37 And that which thou sowest thou sowest not that body that shall be but bare grain it may chance of wheat or of some other grain 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him and to every seed his own body 39 All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kinde of flesh of men another flesh of beasts another of fishes and another of birds 40 There are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestrial is another 41 There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for one star differeth from another star in glory 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown in corruption it is raised in incorruption 43 It is sown in dishonour it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power 44 It is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body 45 And so it is written The first man Adam * Gen. 1.7 was made a living soul the last Adam was made a quickning spirit 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual 47 The first man is of the earth earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven 48 As is the earthy such are they also that are earthy and as is the heavenly such are they also that are heavenly 49 And as we have born the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly 50 Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God neither doth corruption inherit incorruption 51 Behold I shew you a mystery We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed 52 In a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last * Matth. 24.31 1 Thess 4.16 trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written * Isa 25.8 Hos 13.14 Death is swallowed up in victory 55 O death where is thy sting O ‖ Or hell grave where is thy victory 56 The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law 57 But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 58 Therefore my beloved brethren be ye stedfast unmoveable always abounding in the work of the Lord forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. CHAP. II. 1 By comparing what we were by 3 nature with what we are 5 by grace 10 he declareth that we are made for good works and 13 being brought near by Christ should not live as 1● Gentiles and 12 foreiners in time past but as 19 citizens with the saints and the family of God ANd * Col. 2.13 you hath be quickned who were dead in trespasses and sins 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling † Gr. the wills the desires of the flesh and of the minde and were by nature the children of wrath even as others 4 But God who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us 5 Even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved 6 And hath raised as up together and made as sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God 9 Not of works lest any man should boast 10 For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ‖ Or prepared ordained that we should walk in them 11 Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands 12 That at that time ye were without Christ being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no hope and without God in the world 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the bloud of Christ 14 For he is our peace who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man so making peace 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity ‖ Or in himself thereby 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off and to to them that were nigh 18 For * Rom. 5.2 through him we both have an access by one
Spirit unto the Father 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord 22 In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit CHAP. III. 5 The hidden mystery 6 that the Gentiles should be saved 3 was made known to Paul by revelation 8 and to him was that grace given that 〈◊〉 he should preach it 13 He desireth them not to faint for his tribulation 14 and prayeth 19 that they may perceive the great love of Christ toward them FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote ‖ Or a little before afore in few words 4 Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 7 Whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power 8 Unto me who am less then the least of all saints is this grace given that * Gal. 1.16 I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God who created all things by Jesus Christ 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you which is your glory 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named 16 That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthned with might by his Spirit in the inner man 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height 19 And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end Amen CHAP. III. 1 We are not rashly or arrogantly to reprove others 5 but rather to bridle the tongue a little member but a powerful instrument of much good and great barm 13 They who be truly wise be midde and peaceable without envying and strife MY brethren be not many masters knowing that we shall receive the greater ‖ Or judgement condemnation 2 For in many things we offend all * Ecclus. 14.1 and 19.16 and 25.8 If any man offend not in word the same is a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body 3 Behold we put bits in the horses mouths that they may obey us and we turn about their whole body 4 Behold also the ships which though they be so great and are driven of fierce winds yet are they turned about with a very small helm whithersoever the governour listeth 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things Behold how great ‖ Or. wood a matter a little fire kindl●th 6 And the tongue is a fire a world of iniquity so is the tongue amongst our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature and it is let on fire of hell 7 For every † Gr. nature kinde of beasts and of birds and of serpents and things in the sea is tamed and hath been tamed of † Gr. nature of man mankinde 8 But the tongue can no man tame it is an unruly evil full of deadly poyson 9 Therewith bless we God even the Father and therewith curse we men which are made after the similitude of God 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing My brethren these things ought not so to be 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same ‖ Or bek place sweet water and bitter 12 Can the fig-tree my brethren bear olive-berries either a vine sigs so can no fountain both yeeld salt water and fresh 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge amongst you let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts glory not and lie not against the truth 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above but is earthly ‖ Or natural sensual devilish 16 For where envying and strife is there is † Gr tumult or unquietness confusion and every evil work 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure then peaceable gentle and easte to be intreated full of mercy and good fruits ‖ Or without wrangling without partiality and without hypocrisie 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace CHAP. IV. 1 We are to strive against covetousness 4 intemperance 5 pride 11 detraction and rash judgement of others 13 and not to be confident in the good success of worldly business but mindful ever of the uncertainty of this life to commit our selves and all our affairs to Gods providence FRom whence come wars and ‖ Or brawlings fightings among you come they not hence even of your ‖ Or pleasures lusts that war in your members 2 Ye suit and have not ye kill and desire to have and cannot obtain ye sight
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils ye cannot be partakers of the Lords table and of the table of devils 22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousie are we stronger then he 23 All things are lawful for me but all things are not expedient all things are lawful for me but all things edifie not 24 Let no man seek his own but every man anothers wealth 25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles that eat asking no question for conscience sake 26 For * Deut. 10.14 Psal 24.1 the earth is the Lords and the fulness thereof 27 If any of them that beleeve not bid you to a feast and ye be disposed to go whatsoever is set before you eat asking no question for conscience sake 28 But if any man say unto you This is offered in sacrifice unto idols eat not for his sake that shewed it and for conscience sake For * Deut. 10.14 Psal 24.1 the earth is the Lords and the fulness thereof 29 Conscience I say not thine own but of the others for why is my liberty judged of another mans conscience 30 For if I by ‖ Or thanksgiving grace be a partaker why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks 31 * Col. 3.17 Whether therefore ye eat or drink or whatsoever ye do do all to the glory of God 32 * 2 Cor. 6.3 Give none offence neither to the Jews nor to the † Gr. XI 1 He reproveth them because in holy assemblies 4 their men prayed with their heads covered and 6 women with their heads uncovered 17 and because generally their meetings were not for the better but for the worse as 21 namely in profaning with their own feasts the Lords supper 23 Lastly he calleth them to the first institution thereof BE ye followers of me even as I also am of Christ 2 Now I praise you brethren that you remember me in all things and keep the ‖ Or traditions ordinances as I delivered them to you 3 But I would have you know that * Eph. 5 2● the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is the man and the head of Christ is God 4 Every man praying or prophesying having his head covered dishonoureth his head 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head for that is even all one as if she were shaven 6 For if the woman be not covered let her also be shorn but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven let her be covered 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head forasmuch as * Gen. 1 2● he is the image and glory of God but the woman is the glory of the man 8 For the man is not of the woman but the woman of the man 9 * Gen. 2.23 Neither was the man created for the woman but the woman for the man 10 For this cause ought the woman to have ‖ That is a covering in signe that she is under the power of her husband power on her head because of the angels 11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman neither the woman without the man in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man even so is the man also by the woman but all things of God 13 Judge in yourselves is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered 14 Doth not even nature it self teach you that if a man have long hair it is a shame unto him 15 But if a woman have long hair it is a glory to her for her hair is given her for a ‖ Or vail covering 16 But if any man seem to be contentious we have no such custom neither the churches of God 17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not that you come together not for the better but for the worse 18 For first of all when ye come together in the church I hear that there be ‖ Or. schisms divisions among you and I partly beleeve it 19 For there must be also ‖ Or sect● heresies among you that they which are approved may be made manifest among you 20 When ye come together therefore into one place ‖ Or ye cannot eat this is not to eat the Lords supper 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper and one is hungry and another is drunken 22 What have ye not houses to eat and to drink in or despise ye the church of God and shame ‖ Or them that are poor them that have not What shall I say to you shall I praise you in this I praise you not 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread 24 * Matth. 26.26 Mark 13.22 Luke ●2 19 And when he had given thanks he brake it and said Take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do ‖ Or for a remembrance in remembrance of me 25 After the same manner also he took the cup when he had supped saying This cup is the new testament in my bloud this do ye as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me 26 For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ‖ Or shew ye ye do shew the Lords death till he come 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body bloud of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh ‖ Or judgement damnation to himself not discerning the Lords body 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep 31 For if we would judge our selves we should not be judged 32 But when we are judged we are chastened of the Lord that we should not be condemned with the world 33 Wherefore my brethren when ye come together to eat tarry one for another 34 And if any man hunger let him eat at home that ye come not together unto ‖ Or judgement condemnation And the rest will I set in order when I come CHAP. XII 1 Spiritual gifts 4 are divers 7 yet all to profit withal 8 and to that end are diversly bestowed 12 that by the like proportion as the members of a natural body tend all to the 16 mutual decency 22 service and 26 succour of the same body 27 so we should do one for another to make up the mystical body of Christ NOw concerning spiritual gifts brethren I would not
