devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
princes he will travel through strange countreys for he hath tried the good and the evil among men 5 He will give his heart to resort early to the Lord that made him and will pray before the most High and will open his mouth in prayer and make supplication for his sins 6 When the great Lord will he shall be filled with the spirit of understanding he shall pour out wise sentences and give thanks unto the Lord in his prayer 7 He shall direct his counsel and knowledge and in his secrets shall he meditate 8 He shall shew forth that which he hath learned and shall glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord. 9 Many shall commend his understanding and so long as the world endureth it shall not be blotted out his memorial shall not depart away and his name shall live from generation to generation 10 * Chap. 44.15 Nations shall shew forth his wisdom and the congregation shall declare his praise 11 If he die he shall leave a greater name then a thousand and if he live he shall ‖ Or gain unto it increase it 12 Yet have I more to say which I have thought upon for I am filled as the moon at the full 13 Hearken unto me ye holy children and bud forth as a rose growing by the ‖ Or rivers of water brook of the field 14 And give ye a sweet savour as frankincense and flourish as a lilie send forth a smell and sing a song of praise bless the Lord in all his works 15 Magnifie his name and shew forth his praise with the songs of your lips and with harps and in praising him you shall say after this manner 16 * Gen. 1.21 Mark 7 3â— All the works of the Lord are exceeding good and whatsoever he commandeth shall be accomplished in due season 17 And none may say What is this wherefore is that for at time convenient they shall all be sought out at his commandment the waters stood as an heap at the words of his mouth the receptacles of waters 18 At his commandment is done whatsoever pleaseth him and none can hinder when he will save 19 The works of all flesh are before him and nothing can be hid from his eyes 20 He seeth from everlasting to everlasting and there is nothing wonderful before him 21 A man need not to say What is this wherefore is that for he hath made all things for their uses 22 His blessing covered the dry land as a river and watered it as a floud 23 As he hath turned the waters into saltness so shall the heathen inherit his wrath 24 * Hos 14.5 As his ways are plain unto the holy so are they stumbling-blocks unto the wicked 25 For the good are good things created from the beginning so evil things for sinners 26 The principal things for the whole use of mans life are water fire iron and salt flour of wheat honey milk and the bloud of the grape and oyl and clothing 27 All these things are for good to the godly so to the sinners they are turned into evil 28 There be spirits that are created for vengeance which in their fury lay on sore strokes in the time of destruction they pour out their force and appease the wrath of him that made them 29 Fire and hail and famine and death all these were created for vengeance 30 Teeth of wilde beasts and scorpions ‖ Or vipert serpents and the sword punishing the wicked to destruction 31 They shall rejoyce in his commandment and they shall be ready upon earth when need is and when their time is come they shall not transgress his word 32 Therefore from the beginning I was resolved and thought upon these things and have left them in writing 33 All the works of the Lord are good and he will give every needful thing in due season 34 So that a man cannot say This is worse then that for in time they shall all be well approved 35 And therefore praise ye the Lord with the whole heart and mouth and bless the name of the Lord. CHAP. peaceable for all men 9 Both by changing our purposes and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding 10 For Aman a Macedonian the son of Amadatha being indeed a stranger from the Persian bloud and far distant from our goodness and as a stranger received of us 11 Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation as that he was called our father and was continually honoured of all men as the next person unto the king 12 But he not bearing his great dignity went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life 13 Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction as well of Mardocheus who saved our life and continually procured our good as also of blameless Esther partaker of our kingdom with their whole nation 14 For by these means he thought finding us destitute of friends to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians 15 But we finde that the Jews whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction are no evil-doers but live by most just laws 16 And that they be children of the most High and most Mighty living God who hath ‖ Or prosperth ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitours in the most excellent manner 17 Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha 18 For he that was the worker of these things is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family God who ruleth all things speedily rendring vengeance to him according to his deserts 19 Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places that the Jews may freely live after their own laws 20 And ye shall aid them that even the same day being the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar they may be avenged on them who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them 21 For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day wherein the chosen people should have perished 22 You shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting 23 That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well-affected Persians but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction 24 Therefore every city and countrey whatsoever which shall not do according to these things shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword and shall be made not onely unpassable for men but also most hateful to wilde beasts and fowls for ever ¶ The WISDOM of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 2 To whom God sheweth himself 4 and wisdom her self 6 An evil speaker cannot his hid 12 We procure our own destruction 13 For God treated not death LOve * 1 King 3.3 Isa 56.1 righteousness ye that be judges of the earth think of the Lord with a good heart and in simplicity of heart seek him 2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not and sheweth himself unto such as do not * Deut. 4.29 2 Chr. 15.4 distrust him 3 For froward thoughts separate from God and his power when it is tried ‖ Or maketh manifest reproveth the unwise 4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin 5 * Jer. 4.22 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit and remove from thoughts that are without understanding and ‖ Or is rebuked or sâ—with it sdf will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in 6 For wisdom is a * Gal. 5.22 loving spirit and will not acquit a blasphemer of his ‖ Or lâ—â—â— words for God is witnes of his reins and a true beholder of his heart and a hearer of his tongue 7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world and that which ‖ Or upholdeth containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid neither shall vengeance when it punisheth pass by him 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the found of his words shall come unto the Lord for the ‖ Or reproving manifestation of his wicked deeds 10 For the ear of jealousie heareth all things and the noise of murmurings is not hid 11 Therefore beware of murmuring which is unprofitable and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret that shall go for nought and the mouth that ‖ Or sandereth belieth slayeth the soul 12 Seek not death in the errour of your life and pull not upon your selves * Deut. 4.23 24. destruction with the works of your hands 13 For God made not death neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living 14 For he created all things that they might have their being and the generations of the world â—ere healthful and there is no poison of destruction in them nor the kingdom of death upon the earth 15 For righteousness is immortal 16 But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them for when they thought to have it their friend they consumed to nought and made a covenant with it because they are worthy to take part with it CHAP. II. 1 The wicked think this life short 5 and of no other after this 6 Therefore they will take their pleasure in this 10 and conspire against the just 21 What that is which doth blinde them FOr the ungodly said reasoning with themselves but not aright * Job 7.1 Our life is short and tedious * Mat. 22.23 1 Cor. 15.32 and in the death of a man there is no remedy neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave 2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke and a little spark in the moving of our heart 3 Which being extinguished our body shall be turned into ashes and our spirit shall vanish as the ‖ Or â—â—â—ist soft air 4 And our name shall be forgotten in time and no man shall have our works in remembrance and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud and shall be dispersed as a mist that is driven away with the beams of the sun and ‖ Or oppressed overcome with the heat thereof 5 * 1 Chr. 29.15 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away and after our end there is no returning for ‖ Or be it is fast sealed so that no man cometh again 6 Come on therefore let us enjoy the good things * Isa 22.13 35 12. 1 Cor. 15.32 that are present and let us ‖ Or â—â—nestly speedily use the creatures like as in youth 7 Let us fill our selves with costly wine and ointments and set no flower of the spring pass by us 8 Let us crown our selves with rose-buds before they be withered
6 Those of the Jews that be called Assideans whose captain is Judas Maccabeus nourish war and are seditious and will not let the realm be in peace 7 Therefore I being deprived of mine ancestours honour I mean the high priesthood am now come hither 8 First verily for the unseigned care I have of things pertaining to the king and secondly even for that I intend the good of mine own countreymen for all our nation is in no small misery through the unadvised dealing of them aforesaid 9 Wherefore O king seeing thou knowest all these things he careful for the countrey and our nation which is pressed on every side according to the clemency that thou readily shewest unto all 10 For as long as Judas liveth it is not possible that the state should be quiet 11 This was no sooner spoken of him but others of the kings friends being maliciously set against Judas did more incense Demetrius 12 And forthwith calling Nicanor who had been master of the elephants and making him governour over Judea he sent him forth 13 Commanding him to slay Judas and to scatter them that were with him and to make Alcimus high priest of the great temple 14 Then the heathen that had sled out of Judea from Judas came to Nicanor by flocks thinking the harm and calamities of the Jews to be their welfare 15 Now when the Jews heard of Nicanors coming and that the heathen ‖ Or wâ—râ— joyned to them were up against them they cast earth upon their heads and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence 16 So at the commandment of the captain they removed straightways from thence and came near unto them at the town of Dessau 17 Now Simon Judas brother had joyned battle with Nicanor but was somewhat discomfited through the sudden silence of his enemies 18 Nevertheless Nicanor hearing of the manliness of them that were with Judas and the couragiousness that they had to fight for their countrey durst not try the matter by the sword 19 Wherefore he sent Posidonius and Theodotus and Mattathias to make peace 20 So when they had taken long advisement thereupon and the captain had made the multitude acquainted therewith and it appeared that they were all of one minde they consented to the covenants 21 And appointed a day to meet in together by themselves and when the day came and stools were set for either of them 22 Judas placed armed men ready in convenient places lest some treachery should be suddenly practised by the enemies so they made a peaceable conference 23 Now Nicanor abode in Jerusalem and did no hurt but sent away the people that came flocking unto him 24 And he would not willingly have Judas out of his sight for he loved the man from his heart 25 He prayed him also to take a wife and to beget children so he married was quiet and ‖ Or. lived together with him took part of this life 26 But Alcimus perceiving the love that was betwixt them and considering the convenants that were made came to Demetrius and told him that Nicanor was not well affected towards the state for that he had ordained Judas a traytour to his realm to be the kings successour 27 Then the king being in a rage and provoked by the accusations of the most wicked man wrote to Nicanor signifying that he was much displeased with the covenants and commanding him that he should send Maccabeus prisoner in all haste unto Antioch 28 When this came to Nicanors hearing he was much confounded in himself and took it grievously that he should make void the articles which were agreed upon the man being in no fault 29 But because there was no dealing against the king he watched his time to accomplish this thing by policy 30 Notwithstanding when Maccabeus saw that Nicanor began to be churlish unto him and that he entreated him more roughly then he was wont perceiving that such sowr behaviour came not of good he gathered together not a few of his men and withdrew himself from Nicanor 31 But the other knowing that he was notably prevented by Judas policy came into the great and holy temple and commanded the priests that were offering their usual sacrifices to deliver him the man 32 And when they sware that they could not tell where the man was whom he sought 33 He stretched out his right hand toward the temple and made an oath in this manner If you will not deliver me Judas as †Gr. bound a prisoner I will lay this temple of God even with the ground and I will break down the altar and erect a notable temple unto Bacchus 34 After these words he departed Then the priests lift up their hands towards heaven and besought him that was ever a defender of their nation saying in this manner 35 Thou O Lord of all things who hast need of nothing wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us 36 Therefore now O holy Lord of all holiness keep this house ever undefiled which lately was cleansed and stop every unrighteous mouth 37 Now was there accused unto Nicanor one Razis one of the elders of Jerusalem a lover of his countreymen and a man of very good report who for his kindness was called a father of the Jews 38 For in the former times when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles he had been accused of Judaism and did boldly jeopard his body and life with all vehemencie for the religion of the Jews 39 So Nicanor willing to declare the hate that he bare unto the Jews sent above five hundred men of war to take him 40 For he thought by taking him to do the Jews much hurt 41 Now when the multitude would have taken the towre and violently broken into the utter door and bade that fire should be brought to burn it he being ready to be taken on every side fell upon his sword 42 Choosing rather to die manfully then to come into the hands of the wicked to be abused otherwise then beseemed his noble birth 43 But missing his stroke through haste the multitude also rushing within the doors he ran boldly up to the wall and cast himself down manfully amongst the thickest of them 44 But they quickly giving back and a space being made he fell down into the midst of the void place 45 Nevertheless while there was yet breath within him being inflamed with anger he rose up and though his bloud gushed out like spouts of water and his wounds were grievous yet he ran through the midst of the throng and standing upon a steep rock 46 When as his bloud was now quite gone he pluckt out his bowels and taking them in both his hands he cast them upon the throng and calling upon the Lord of life and spirit to restore him those again he thus died CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh despise dominion and speak evil of dignities 9 Yet Michael the archangel when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses durst not bring against him a railing accusation but said * Zech. 3.2 The Lord rebuke thee 10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not but what they know naturally as brute beasts in those things they corrupt themselves 11 Wo unto them for they have gone in the way of Cain and * 2 Pet. 2.15 ran greedily after the errour of Balaam for reward and perished in the gain-saying of Core 12 These are spots in your feasts of charity when they feast with you seeding themselves without fear * 2 Pet. 2.17 clouds they are without water carried about of winds trees whose fruit withereth without fruit twice dead plucked up by the roots 13 Raging waves of the sea foaming out their own shame wandring stars to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever 14 And Enoch also the seventh from Adam prophesied of these saying Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints 15 To execute judgement upon all and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him 16 These are murmurers complainers walking after their own lusts and their mouth speaketh great swelling words having mens persons in admiration because of advantage 17 But beloved remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ 18 How that they told you * 1 Tim. 4.1 2 Tim. 3.1 2 Pet. 3.3 there should be mockers in the last time who should walk after their own ungodly lusts 19 These be they who separate themselves sensual having not the Spirit 20 But ye beloved building up yourselves on your most holy faith praying in the holy Ghost 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life 22 And of some have compassion making a difference 23 And others save with fear pulling them out of the fire hating even the garment spotted by the flesh 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy 25 To the onely wise God our Saviour be glory and majesty dominion and power both now and ever Amen ¶ The REVELATION of S. IV. 2 John seeth the throne of God in heaven 4 The four and twenty elders 6 The four beasts full of eves before and behinde 10 The elders lay down their crowns and worship him that sat on the throne AFter this I looked and behold a door was opened in heaven and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter 2 And immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was set in heaven and one sat on the throne 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper a sardine stone there was a rainbowe round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold 5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thundrings and voices And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behinde 7 And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and they were full of eyes within and †Gr. they have no rest they rest not day and night saying * Isa 6.3 Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty which was and is is to come 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne who liveth for ever and ever 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying 11 * Ch. 5.12 Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created CHAP.
