subdue_a mighty_o in_o we_o the_o remaindure_v of_o corruption_n and_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o supply_v such_o grace_n as_o may_v further_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n as_o also_o enable_v we_o in_o the_o use_n and_o improvement_n of_o they_o to_o that_o end_n especial_o present_v they_o in_o the_o perfection_n of_o his_o merit_n that_o above_o their_o worth_n they_o may_v be_v acceptable_a unto_o god_n his_o father_n and_o so_o by_o virtue_n of_o our_o union_n with_o he_o daily_o lead_v we_o forward_o to_o perfection_n a_o second_o effectual_a cause_n of_o this_o growth_n be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v give_v unto_o we_o by_o christ_n &_o dwell_v in_o we_o do_v work_v effectual_o in_o we_o to_o a_o daily_a discovery_n and_o subdue_a of_o corruption_n by_o reprove_v for_o sin_n yea_o for_o righteousness_n convince_a all_o natural_a ability_n and_o remaindure_v of_o goodness_n in_o we_o all_o conceit_a righteousness_n in_o the_o law_n or_o any_o thing_n save_v in_o christ_n yea_o still_o convince_a the_o imperfection_n of_o all_o inherent_a righteousness_n attain_v &_o so_o still_o interess_v in_o christ_n and_o so_o by_o it_o power_n increase_a grace_n the_o inward_a instrumental_a mean_n it_o the_o renew_a heart_n which_o be_v now_o quicken_v and_o actuate_v by_o the_o spirit_n become_v ministerial_o a_o fellow_n worker_n therewith_o in_o all_o such_o work_n as_o may_v any_o way_n further_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n 1._o cor._n 3._o more_o particular_o these_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v special_a instrumental_a cause_n of_o our_o growth_n in_o grace_n 1_o a_o save_a knowledge_n and_o that_o 1._o of_o our_o particular_a estate_n and_o this_o twofold_a 1._o both_o of_o the_o power_n of_o corruption_n that_o remain_v and_o cleave_v unto_o we_o &_o also_o of_o that_o truth_n &_o measure_n of_o grace_n whereto_o we_o have_v attain_v for_o as_o the_o true_a discern_v of_o corruption_n and_o the_o power_n and_o measure_v thereof_o in_o we_o be_v a_o mean_n daily_o to_o work_v in_o we_o a_o denial_n of_o ourselves_o and_o renounce_v all_o ability_n in_o we_o as_o of_o ourselves_o to_o
and_o so_o animate_v and_o quicken_v the_o whole_a so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o new_a man_n it_o be_v whole_o create_v of_o god_n a_o new_a in_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n 3.10_o col._n 3.10_o without_o any_o help_n of_o nature_n nay_o contrary_a thereto_o whence_o it_o follow_v 1._o that_o see_v as_o be_v the_o beginning_n so_o be_v also_o the_o lead_v forward_o of_o the_o work_n mere_o by_o the_o free_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n as_o nature_n be_v a_o mere_a patient_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o work_n so_o though_o now_o be_v renew_v by_o grace_n it_o become_v in_o part_n a_o agent_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o of_o itself_o but_o mere_o by_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n enable_v it_o to_o every_o action_n and_o degree_n of_o increase_n both_o for_o the_o matter_n and_o manner_n thereof_o 2._o so_o that_o hereby_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n if_o we_o find_v the_o spirit_n daily_o quicken_a and_o further_a the_o work_n both_o stir_v up_o the_o good_a motion_n as_o the_o ground_n thereof_o and_o enable_v to_o put_v the_o motion_n into_o practice_n &_o give_v comfort_n in_o the_o practice_n by_o the_o acceptance_n thereof_o in_o christ_n above_o the_o worth_n thereof_o and_o hence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n to_o meet_v with_o diverse_a tentation_n incident_a to_o the_o new_a birth_n both_o for_o our_o trial_n and_o comfort_n therein_o that_o whereas_o we_o find_v ourselves_o tho_o true_o convert_v yet_o sometime_o to_o be_v unapt_a to_o holy_a duty_n find_v little_a comfort_n in_o they_o less_o power_n to_o resist_v corruption_n and_o so_o may_v think_v the_o work_n to_o be_v not_o only_o interrupt_v but_o quite_o undo_v yet_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v a_o creation_n not_o only_o in_o the_o beginning_n but_o in_o the_o proceed_n too_o psal_n 51.10_o though_o we_o may_v despair_v in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o yet_o must_v we_o now_o by_o faith_n still_o rely_v on_o our_o god_n who_o call_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o as_o if_o they_o be_v rom._n 4._o and_o yet_o see_v this_o creation_n be_v by_o mean_n though_o in_o themselves_o most_o unlikely_a yet_o effectual_a by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n hereto_o therefore_o for_o our_o recovery_n and_o proceed_v we_o must_v wait_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o mean_n for_o the_o renew_v of_o his_o work_n in_o due_a season_n second_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o as_o in_o nature_n though_o there_o be_v a_o quicken_a of_o every_o part_n at_o once_o yet_o it_o be_v in_o this_o order_n that_o first_o the_o faculty_n be_v first_o create_v whereby_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o action_n and_o then_o the_o action_n follow_v from_o those_o faculty_n in_o their_o order_n and_o time_n as_o the_o organ_n be_v create_v and_o fit_v thereto_o so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n the_o faculty_n be_v create_v in_o every_o part_n at_o the_o first_o in_o the_o understanding_n conscience_n will_n affection_n etc._n etc._n yet_o do_v not_o these_o faculty_n execute_v their_o several_a operation_n at_o the_o first_o by_o reason_n that_o the_o organ_n of_o those_o faculty_n be_v either_o yet_o not_o create_v or_o not_o fit_v for_o use_v whence_o follow_v these_o conclusion_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o growth_n and_o comfort_n therein_o 1._o for_o trial_n that_o see_v the_o faculty_n must_v lead_v to_o and_o enlive_v the_o action_n and_o of_o all_o faculty_n though_o the_o will_v be_v predominate_a yet_o the_o understanding_n must_v begin_v to_o discern_v what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v or_o undo_v and_o knowledge_n must_v inform_v and_o bind_v the_o conscience_n to_o the_o do_v thereof_o and_o so_o the_o will_v consequent_o be_v attempt_v and_o subdue_v to_o the_o performance_n or_o leave_v thereof_o therefore_o if_o we_o find_v this_o order_n in_o our_o growth_n we_o may_v undoubted_o conclude_v a_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n whereas_o in_o the_o natural_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n this_o order_n be_v pervert_v and_o deprave_a ofttimes_o many_o thing_n be_v do_v not_o so_o much_o out_o of_o knowledge_n or_o conscience_n but_o by_o example_n of_o other_o or_o sudden_a motion_n sometime_o of_o satan_n and_o our_o corrupt_a will_n upon_o outward_a respect_n and_o so_o on_o the_o contrary_n 2._o for_o comfort_v that_o if_o we_o find_v this_o order_n that_o knowledge_n lead_v conscience_n and_o conscience_n attempt_v the_o will_n and_o this_o by_o grace_n be_v subdue_v thereto_o though_o by_o reason_n of_o tentation_n or_o defect_n of_o other_o mean_n or_o ability_n the_o work_n be_v not_o do_v yet_o this_o be_v a_o good_a evidence_n of_o grow_v in_o grace_n if_o the_o will_v be_v still_o more_o constant_a thereto_o and_o desirous_a thereof_o in_o the_o disappointment_n of_o the_o good_a act_n and_o more_o averse_a to_o the_o evil_n commit_v hate_v what_o we_o do_v evil_a and_o love_v more_o the_o good_a undo_v use_v and_o renew_v the_o mean_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o one_o and_o decline_v the_o mean_n for_o the_o renew_v of_o evil_a a_o second_o condition_n of_o the_o natural_a creature_n be_v that_o it_o grow_v up_o even_o from_o the_o first_o in_o every_o part_n as_o be_v quicken_v by_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o whole_a in_o the_o whole_a and_o whole_a in_o every_o part_n enliving_a and_o so_o increase_a the_o same_o and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o new_a creature_n every_o part_n and_o faculty_n be_v lively_o quicken_v by_o grace_n at_o first_o though_o it_o execute_v not_o present_o the_o operation_n thereof_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o defect_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o so_o every_o part_n grow_v up_o together_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n thereof_o as_o we_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n so_o in_o conscience_n of_o obedience_n so_o in_o humility_n for_o it_o imperfection_n so_o in_o patience_n etc._n etc._n whence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n both_o for_o the_o trial_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n 1_o for_o trial_n that_o if_o we_o find_v a_o genenerall_n affect_v of_o every_o part_n as_o well_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o will_n as_o a_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n for_o the_o same_o as_o well_o a_o love_n unto_o goodness_n as_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n as_o well_o a_o purpose_n of_o heart_n to_o leave_v it_o and_o do_v the_o contrary_a as_o a_o sight_n of_o it_o in_o the_o understanding_n and_o then_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n see_v that_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v by_o the_o power_n of_o conscience_n natural_o especial_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n discern_v sin_n and_o so_o be_v conumce_v of_o it_o but_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o renew_a by_o grace_n neither_o can_v he_o hate_v it_o unfeigned_o or_o be_v willing_a to_o part_v with_o it_o upon_o the_o best_a term_n neither_o be_v able_a in_o any_o measure_n to_o forsake_v the_o same_o upon_o the_o true_a ground_n in_o obedience_n and_o love_n unto_o god_n but_o only_o upon_o by-respect_n out_o of_o love_n to_o himself_o he_o may_v so_o leave_v some_o sin_n as_o to_o enchange_v it_o for_o a_o more_o sweet_a and_o profitable_a or_o else_o he_o must_v leave_v it_o because_o ability_n and_o opportunity_n serve_v not_o thereto_o or_o else_o he_o leave_v with_o condition_n to_o resume_v it_o again_o upon_o a_o better_a opportunity_n and_o advantage_n and_o so_o as_o he_o will_v no_o good_a at_o all_o so_o if_o he_o do_v any_o it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n but_o from_o outward_a respect_n neither_o do_v he_o continue_v therein_o otherwise_o then_o may_v serve_v his_o carnal_a end_n make_v hereby_o amends_n for_o some_o grievous_a sin_n or_o seek_v to_o further_a and_o cloak_n they_o more_o dangerous_o hereby_o 3._o as_o in_o the_o new_a birth_n though_o there_o be_v a_o faculty_n of_o every_o quality_n &_o power_n yet_o there_o be_v not_o a_o present_a execution_n and_o use_n thereof_o as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o first_o bear_v a_o faculty_n of_o speak_v go_v reason_n etc._n etc._n yet_o no_o present_a use_n thereof_o so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o new_a creature_n though_o by_o the_o spirit_n all_o grace_n be_v begin_v in_o we_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o faculty_n of_o they_o yet_o for_o the_o use_n of_o they_o we_o must_v expect_v in_o those_o season_n when_o they_o may_v best_o serve_v for_o god_n glory_n and_o our_o build_n forward_o in_o christ_n reason_n hereof_o be_v 1._o because_o some_o grace_n arise_v out_o of_o other_o as_o first_o faith_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o other_o grace_n all_o other_o proceed_v from_o it_o patience_n arise_v out_o of_o experience_n and_o so_o hope_v from_o thence_o 2._o some_o grace_n be_v only_o fit_a for_o diverse_a season_n as_o patience_n in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n
our_o best_a we_o yet_o find_v not_o our_o labour_n answer_v with_o that_o success_n and_o comfort_n for_o the_o present_a as_o we_o do_v desire_n and_o expect_v yet_o may_v not_o this_o challenge_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o effectual_a in_o enable_v we_o to_o welldoing_a and_o crown_v the_o same_o though_o we_o pray_v with_o conscience_n and_o be_v not_o hear_v in_o what_o we_o pray_v for_o though_o we_o hear_v and_o little_a profit_n by_o it_o because_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o melt_v our_o affection_n inflame_v with_o love_n and_o zeal_n at_o all_o time_n we_o rather_o find_v contrary_o corruption_n increase_v hardness_n of_o heart_n discern_v etc._n etc._n though_o we_o desire_v to_o repent_v and_o labour_n to_o abase_v our_o heart_n before_o our_o god_n yet_o we_o can_v do_v it_o with_o tear_n we_o can_v forsake_v such_o evil_n as_o we_o be_v grieve_v for_o and_o hate_v unfeigned_o all_o these_o notwithstanding_o i_o say_v we_o may_v not_o therefore_o conclude_v that_o the_o spirit_n have_v not_o assist_v we_o or_o approve_v not_o of_o our_o labour_n because_o still_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o free_a worker_n both_o free_a to_o afford_v we_o what_o measure_n of_o grace_n it_o please_v in_o do_v these_o thing_n which_o though_o it_o be_v far_o from_o perfection_n yet_o it_o be_v such_o as_o for_o the_o present_a be_v fit_a both_o that_o god_n may_v still_o have_v the_o glory_n and_o we_o may_v be_v cast_v upon_o his_o power_n for_o the_o enable_v of_o we_o in_o our_o weakness_n and_o also_o cast_v mere_o upon_o his_o freegrace_n for_o the_o acceptance_n and_o crown_v thereof_o and_o therefore_o if_o now_o we_o ask_v and_o be_v not_o answer_v in_o our_o particular_a desire_n for_o the_o present_a yet_o if_o we_o be_v supply_v with_o what_o may_v be_v better_o for_o we_o namely_o with_o patience_n to_o wait_v on_o our_o god_n with_o faith_n to_o rest_v on_o god_n though_o we_o feel_v no_o present_a answer_n for_o our_o comfort_n with_o more_o zeal_n to_o continue_v in_o prayer_n with_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o earnestness_n therein_o be_v not_o this_o the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o grant_v we_o what_o best_o please_v the_o same_o as_o to_o gain_v glory_n unto_o god_n in_o let_v we_o hereby_o see_v our_o fail_n and_o enable_v we_o to_o bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n so_o thereby_o to_o lead_v we_o a_o long_a by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n far_o beyond_o our_o ability_n to_o perfection_n if_o now_o the_o lord_n deal_v more_o abundant_o with_o we_o than_o we_o can_v think_v or_o desire_v be_v not_o the_o wisdom_n and_o free_a mercy_n of_o our_o god_n admirable_a herein_o be_v not_o his_o way_n though_o past_o find_v out_o yet_o free_a and_o faithful_a to_o perfect_v his_o work_n in_o we_o thus_o though_o we_o hear_v and_o find_v not_o comfort_n and_o joy_n therein_o but_o rather_o be_v more_o abase_v in_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o corruption_n herein_o also_o appear_v the_o liberty_n of_o the_o spirit_n who_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o recompense_v we_o at_o all_o if_o we_o consider_v our_o desert_n much_o less_o to_o answer_v we_o in_o one_o particular_a as_o if_o it_o have_v no_o other_o way_n to_o work_v but_o if_o in_o stead_n of_o yield_v we_o joy_n and_o comfort_n in_o hear_v it_o afford_v we_o that_o which_o may_v best_o further_a our_o reckon_n unto_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n by_o discover_v daily_a corruption_n yet_o more_o and_o more_o and_o prevent_v those_o spiritual_a evil_n of_o pride_n vainglory_n security_n etc._n etc._n which_o may_v be_v occasion_v by_o what_o we_o desire_v which_o may_v rob_v god_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o ourselves_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o present_a welldoing_a and_o so_o of_o power_n to_o increase_v as_o these_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o discover_v corruption_n to_o prevent_v these_o evil_n so_o be_v they_o fit_a for_o we_o in_o this_o state_n of_o our_o imperfection_n to_o increase_v humility_n may_v we_o not_o reap_v comfort_n in_o this_o that_o we_o can_v still_o renounce_v our_o self_n and_o be_v abase_v in_o our_o own_o eye_n and_o do_v not_o the_o lord_n now_o in_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n not_o only_o answer_v our_o general_a end_n which_o be_v to_o go_v forward_o to_o perfection_n but_o therein_o also_o supply_v we_o even_o with_o that_o particular_a which_o we_o do_v desire_v though_o not_o for_o the_o present_a yet_o in_o due_a season_n though_o not_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n which_o we_o expect_v it_o yet_o by_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o may_v still_o justify_v the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o thereby_o confirm_v unto_o we_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o our_o god_n who_o will_v perfect_v the_o work_n which_o he_o have_v begin_v in_o we_o that_o he_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n of_o all_o his_o mercy_n and_o so_o though_o we_o can_v mourn_v for_o our_o sin_n with_o such_o plenty_n of_o tear_n yet_o if_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n this_o be_v discern_v of_o we_o and_o we_o be_v more_o humble_v for_o the_o same_o though_o not_o express_v outward_o yet_o inward_o with_o groan_v and_o bleeding_n of_o the_o heart_n do_v not_o this_o evidence_n the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o suppress_v our_o repentance_n in_o that_o manner_n asâ—_n best_o please_v himself_o and_o yet_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o happy_o though_o it_o cross_v our_o particular_a desire_n of_o express_v our_o sorrow_n by_o tear_n which_o may_v savour_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o tend_v to_o the_o satisfaction_n thereof_o as_o be_v subject_a to_o vainglory_n hypocrisy_n etc._n etc._n yet_o it_o further_v our_o main_a desire_n to_o approve_v the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n unto_o god_n to_o be_v vile_a still_o in_o our_o own_o eye_n that_o god_n only_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n to_o interest_n thereby_o in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v lead_v along_o to_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o can_v forsake_v what_o particular_a sin_n we_o be_v grieve_v for_o and_o hearty_o detest_v yet_o do_v not_o this_o challenge_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o if_o it_o be_v ineffectual_a altogether_o but_o rather_o evidence_v the_o liberty_n of_o the_o spirit_n who_o work_v in_o we_o according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n though_o not_o what_o we_o desire_v in_o particular_a yet_o what_o we_o ought_v to_o desire_v principal_o namely_o the_o cast_v away_o of_o such_o main_a evil_n as_o hang_v fast_o upon_o we_o and_o most_o hinder_v our_o growth_n in_o grace_n and_o the_o furnish_v we_o with_o the_o most_o necessary_a grace_n which_o may_v further_o our_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o though_o we_o hearty_o desire_v and_o endeavour_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o some_o infirmity_n which_o do_v daily_o encumber_v we_o and_o seem_v to_o abase_v we_o daily_o in_o our_o own_o eye_n and_o yet_o can_v attain_v the_o same_o yet_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n hereby_o more_o free_a and_o glorious_a both_o increase_a hereby_o our_o desire_n and_o hatred_n thereof_o and_o also_o accept_v the_o same_o as_o sufficient_a for_o the_o present_a and_o withal_o use_v in_o it_o singular_a wisdom_n the_o remaindure_n of_o such_o corruption_n as_o sovereign_a antidote_n to_o purge_v out_o and_o prevent_v the_o increase_n of_o more_o dangerous_a evil_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n vainglory_n security_n 9_o 2_o cor._n 12.8_o 9_o and_o such_o like_a and_o so_o by_o the_o purge_n out_o of_o these_o root_n of_o bitterness_n gracious_o weaken_v the_o power_n of_o such_o infirmity_n as_o we_o carry_v about_o we_o and_o provoke_v we_o to_o a_o great_a watchfulness_n over_o they_o and_o to_o a_o more_o earnest_a desire_n to_o put_v off_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v whole_o rid_v of_o they_o rom._n 7.24_o that_o so_o god_n may_v be_v all_o in_o all_o and_o withal_o recompense_v gracious_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n in_o we_o with_o such_o necessary_a grace_n of_o sincerity_n humility_n patience_n and_o the_o like_a that_o so_o hereby_o we_o may_v be_v better_o enable_v to_o subdue_v they_o and_o so_o grow_v up_o to_o perfect_a holiness_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o only_a glory_n of_o all_o his_o goodness_n thus_o do_v our_o wise_a god_n shall_v further_o appear_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o second_o property_n of_o the_o wind_n that_o though_o we_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o yet_o we_o know_v not_o whence_o it_o come_v nor_o whither_o it_o go_v which_o as_o it_o evidence_v still_o the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o it_o also_o discover_v gracious_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n thereby_o as_o first_o in_o that_o we_o thereof_o by_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o assurance_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o same_o yet_o lest_o we_o shall_v imagine_v the_o spirit_n tie_v only_o to_o this_o effect_n or_o that_o we_o deserve_v the_o same_o out_o of_o the_o worth_n of_o our_o well-doing_n and_o so_o encroach_v upon_o the_o worthiness_n of_o our_o head_n therefore_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v not_o see_v full_o for_o that_o remain_v for_o another_o life_n some_o notice_n we_o shall_v have_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o work_v though_o we_o can_v full_o discern_v the_o mystery_n thereof_o and_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o some_o such_o feel_n thereof_o we_o shall_v have_v as_o may_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a though_o we_o may_v want_v of_o such_o evidence_n which_o may_v evince_v the_o perfection_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v most_o fit_a for_o this_o state_n of_o grow_v our_o faith_n shall_v be_v mingle_v with_o some_o doubt_v our_o grace_n with_o some_o mixture_n of_o corruption_n that_o as_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o truth_n thereof_o so_o we_o may_v also_o discern_v the_o imperfection_n of_o the_o same_o that_o so_o we_o may_v daily_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n by_o daily_o deny_v of_o ourselves_o and_o labour_v to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n not_o have_v our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o we_o have_v not_o the_o perfect_a sight_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n neither_o enjoy_v sensible_a comfort_n in_o the_o same_o at_o all_o time_n alike_o yet_o be_v this_o so_o far_o from_o challenge_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o we_o as_o that_o rather_o it_o do_v evidence_n undoubted_o the_o power_n thereof_o see_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o combat_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n there_o must_v necessary_o fall_v out_o such_o difference_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o also_o of_o our_o apprehension_n thereof_o whereas_o if_o it_o be_v always_o in_o one_o key_n and_o temper_n it_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o combat_n and_o so_o no_o true_a conversion_n only_o here_o let_v it_o suffice_v we_o that_o our_o god_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o will_v work_v as_o it_o please_v he_o that_o his_o grace_n may_v still_o be_v free_a and_o if_o ever_o we_o have_v any_o true_a feel_n of_o the_o work_n it_o be_v a_o evidence_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v it_o again_o or_o else_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v better_o for_o we_o know_v that_o here_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sight_n 2._o cor._n 5.7_o and_o that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n must_v be_v perfect_v in_o our_o weakness_n 2._o cor._n 12.8_o remember_v now_o what_o be_v add_v in_o the_o three_o place_n as_o a_o lively_a evidence_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o we_o know_v not_o whence_o it_o come_v nor_o whether_o it_o go_v therein_o give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o though_o we_o shall_v know_v so_o much_o of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o present_a yet_o be_v it_o still_o a_o free_a worker_n we_o may_v be_v to_o seek_v if_o we_o will_v walk_v by_o sense_n of_o any_o work_n that_o be_v past_a as_o if_o that_o all_o our_o former_a measure_n be_v but_o in_o hypocrisy_n and_o we_o may_v be_v to_o seek_v of_o what_o shall_v follow_v after_o if_o we_o tie_v god_n to_o any_o particular_a way_n subject_a to_o our_o apprehension_n and_o do_v not_o see_v a_o far_o off_o by_o faith_n rest_v upon_o the_o promise_n of_o our_o god_n above_o our_o worthiness_n yea_o above_o our_o capacity_n thereof_o because_o we_o must_v still_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o so_o grow_v in_o grace_n yea_o though_o we_o do_v live_v by_o faith_n both_o in_o discern_v whereunto_o we_o be_v come_v and_o whither_o we_o may_v go_v in_o general_a yet_o see_v we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n 13.9_o 1._o cor._n 13.9_o and_o so_o at_o the_o best_a so_o far_o can_v believe_v as_o that_o still_o we_o must_v desire_v the_o lord_n to_o help_v our_o unbelief_n 8._o math._n 8._o therefore_o neither_o can_v we_o discern_v all_o only_a glory_n of_o all_o his_o mercy_n ephes_n 3.20.21_o thus_o do_v this_o metaphor_n of_o the_o wind_n evidence_n the_o manner_n of_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n that_o even_o above_o our_o apprehension_n yea_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o ordinary_a course_n as_o the_o ship_n many_o time_n sail_n by_o side_n and_o contrary_a wind_n towards_o the_o port_n and_o be_v fain_o sometime_o to_o forgo_v her_o burden_n yea_o her_o anchor_n to_o that_o so_o she_o may_v escape_v the_o storm_n and_o ride_v safe_o to_o the_o haven_n so_o be_v we_o lead_v along_o in_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n to_o this_o end_n consider_v we_o further_o that_o our_o new_a birth_n and_o growth_n in_o grace_n be_v compare_v to_o a_o combat_n express_v therein_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o growth_n which_o be_v by_o a_o continual_a bicker_n and_o contention_n between_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o flesh_n so_o thereby_o also_o give_v we_o some_o direction_n how_o to_o discern_v the_o manner_n thereof_o even_o by_o a_o continual_a fight_n and_o wrestle_v within_o we_o whence_o arise_v these_o conclusion_n that_o as_o the_o spirit_n prevail_v two_o way_n either_o by_o strengthen_v we_o to_o overcome_v the_o present_a tentation_n or_o else_o by_o leave_v we_o to_o the_o particular_a tentation_n for_o the_o present_a thereby_o either_o to_o arm_v we_o better_o against_o the_o same_o hereafter_o that_o so_o we_o may_v after_o a_o foil_n attain_v a_o more_o glorious_a victory_n or_o though_o it_o leave_v we_o to_o be_v foil_v by_o the_o particular_a tentation_n yet_o it_o do_v by_o that_o foil_n prevent_v and_o overcome_v that_o which_o may_v be_v more_o dangerous_a therefore_o 1._o that_o we_o then_o grow_v in_o grace_n when_o we_o make_v advantage_n of_o our_o foil_n to_o prevent_v after_o fall_v or_o be_v recompense_v in_o our_o foil_n with_o more_o humility_n and_o repentance_n to_o be_v prepare_v to_o further_a trial_n 2._o that_o whatsoever_o duty_n we_o perform_v if_o there_o be_v not_o both_o a_o struggle_a before_o hand_n by_o the_o flesh_n to_o hinder_v the_o act_n thereof_o and_o a_o combat_n after_o by_o the_o spirit_n to_o purge_v the_o same_o of_o hypocrisy_n formality_n etc._n etc._n we_o have_v little_a comfort_n either_o of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o or_o of_o our_o growth_n therein_o 3._o that_o the_o discern_a of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v rather_o by_o the_o issue_n and_o success_n of_o the_o combat_n then_o by_o the_o present_a wrestle_a because_o for_o the_o present_a through_o violence_n of_o tentation_n and_o heat_n of_o affection_n strive_v there_o against_o our_o faith_n be_v now_o exercise_v be_v so_o intentive_a in_o the_o encounter_n that_o it_o have_v enough_o to_o do_v to_o keep_v it_o own_o therein_o and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n if_o as_o it_o need_v not_o so_o it_o can_v discern_v for_o the_o present_a sensible_a growth_n therein_o 4._o see_v our_o great_a valour_n in_o this_o life_n be_v by_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n manner_n of_o work_v in_o we_o by_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n we_o see_v a_o necessity_n of_o live_v by_o faith_n even_o beyond_o and_o contrary_a to_o sense_n so_o also_o if_o we_o consider_v on_o the_o other_o side_n our_o weakness_n in_o apprehend_v this_o wisdom_n of_o our_o god_n our_o difference_n in_o apply_v christ_n we_o may_v yet_o further_o see_v a_o great_a necessity_n of_o this_o rule_n even_o still_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n both_o for_o our_o trial_n and_o comfort_n herein_o as_o first_o for_o trial_n whereas_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v in_o general_a in_o a_o mystery_n have_v we_o not_o need_v of_o faith_n to_o discern_v the_o same_o if_o we_o walk_v by_o sense_n and_o not_o by_o faith_n shall_v we_o not_o miss_v in_o the_o discern_a and_o judge_v thereof_o 2_o whereas_o the_o mystery_n of_o this_o growth_n though_o it_o be_v in_o part_n discern_v of_o we_o not_o so_o much_o as_o we_o have_v knowledge_n thereof_o as_o we_o find_v the_o practice_n and_o experience_n of_o the_o same_o yet_o in_o regard_n our_o knowledge_n 〈◊〉_d imperfect_a even_o in_o what_o we_o do_v apprehend_v much_o more_o to_o seek_v of_o what_o be_v not_o yet_o reveal_v &_o our_o best_a experience_a practice_n be_v general_o subject_a to_o infirmity_n &_o so_o to_o distraction_n &_o error_n how_o can_v we_o be_v sustain_v in_o hope_n of_o what_o be_v yet_o in_o expectation_n unless_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n to_o make_v it_o present_a unto_o we_o that_o so_o in_o patience_n we_o faith_n consist_v not_o so_o much_o in_o it_o own_o ability_n or_o worth_n in_o apprehend_v christ_n for_o so_o it_o have_v wherein_o to_o beast_n in_o itself_o and_o not_o in_o god_n but_o in_o the_o worthiness_n of_o what_o it_o apprehend_v which_o be_v the_o more_o advance_a by_o how_o much_o our_o work_n be_v debase_v so_o by_o so_o much_o the_o more_o do_v it_o thrive_v and_o increase_v as_o it_o ascribe_v the_o glory_n in_o it_o weakness_n to_o it_o head_n christ_n jesus_n as_o hereby_o receive_v new_a power_n from_o christ_n whereby_o it_o may_v yet_o get_v fast_o hold_v and_o so_o prevail_v more_o victorious_o even_o with_o god_n himself_o by_o how_o much_o it_o have_v more_o overmastred_a the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o therefore_o see_v as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v with_o he_o in_o the_o heaven_n we_o may_v more_o clear_o discern_v by_o faith_n within_o the_o veil_n &_o so_o by_o faith_n lie_v hold_v of_o eternal_a life_n the_o sum_n of_o all_o be_v that_o our_o fail_a might_n quite_o discourage_v and_o cast_v we_o off_o from_o well-doing_n therefore_o also_o be_v we_o sustain_v by_o faith_n in_o christ_n as_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o corruption_n so_o destinate_a and_o appropriate_v to_o this_o work_n as_o both_o illightning_n our_o understanding_n to_o conceive_v what_o natural_o we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o and_o also_o incline_v our_o affection_n to_o the_o embrace_v thereof_o to_o which_o they_o be_v natural_o averse_a so_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v by_o it_o own_o mean_n even_o by_o the_o spiritual_a word_n as_o be_v ordain_v and_o only_o effectual_a hereunto_o therefore_o if_o as_o our_o beginning_n of_o grace_n have_v be_v from_o the_o word_n so_o we_o be_v lead_v forward_o by_o the_o power_n thereof_o in_o our_o proceed_n therein_o be_v able_a to_o deny_v all_o our_o action_n from_o this_o ground_n to_o square_v they_o all_o to_o this_o rule_n and_o to_o aim_v they_o all_o to_o the_o main_a end_n thereof_o hereby_o shall_v we_o wise_o discover_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n especial_o if_o we_o can_v discern_v the_o mystery_n of_o this_o word_n special_o labour_v the_o inward_a purge_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o for_o thing_n we_o may_v discern_v the_o measure_n of_o grace_n how_o far_o we_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o labour_v in_o this_o life_n how_o we_o may_v attain_v what_o be_v competent_a for_o this_o life_n and_o so_o hereby_o we_o may_v make_v trial_n whether_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n if_o we_o have_v attain_a to_o such_o conscience_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n as_o that_o we_o can_v only_o prefer_v the_o performance_n thereof_o above_o any_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o unless_o it_o be_v in_o such_o case_n of_o necessity_n and_o charity_n whereby_o we_o preserve_v the_o bond_n of_o love_n which_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n though_o we_o exchange_v some_o particular_a duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n in_o such_o case_n with_o some_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o as_o the_o occasion_n require_v but_o also_o we_o can_v so_o preserve_v the_o holy_a order_n which_o that_o table_n require_v as_o to_o do_v all_o thing_n out_o of_o mercy_n therefore_o necessary_o must_v our_o weakness_n be_v daily_o subdue_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n which_o otherwise_o will_v prevail_v to_o overthrow_v the_o work_n or_o else_o wise_o turn_v to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o work_n that_o the_o glory_n of_o both_o may_v only_o redound_v to_o the_o lord_n both_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n in_o subdue_a or_o more_o weaken_a subdue_a corruption_n by_o such_o mean_n and_o in_o such_o manner_n as_o in_o all_o likelihood_n of_o flesh_n serve_v more_o to_o enrage_v and_o increase_v the_o same_o as_o by_o affliction_n desertion_n and_o such_o like_a yea_o wonderful_o turn_v about_o the_o sense_n and_o power_n of_o corruption_n not_o only_o to_o the_o weaken_v thereof_o but_o also_o to_o further_o we_o gracious_o to_o a_o great_a increase_n of_o grace_n from_o whence_o do_v arise_v these_o comfortable_a conclusion_n to_o discern_v the_o measure_n of_o grace_n and_o further_o we_o therein_o first_o that_o see_v the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v see_v in_o weakness_n therefore_o as_o we_o may_v not_o look_v for_o any_o further_a measure_n of_o grace_n in_o this_o life_n than_o what_o be_v accompany_v with_o much_o weakness_n so_o we_o may_v hereby_o discern_v that_o to_o be_v a_o competent_a and_o thrive_a measure_n of_o grace_n which_o sâ—rues_v most_o to_o discover_v corruption_n tend_v most_o to_o the_o abâ—sing_n and_o subdue_a thereof_o so_o that_o the_o more_o we_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n the_o more_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n the_o more_o we_o discern_v the_o deceitfulness_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o perverseness_n of_o our_o thought_n the_o more_o light_a and_o grace_n we_o have_v receive_v yea_o the_o more_o we_o be_v abase_v and_o empty_v of_o all_o confidence_n in_o our_o own_o ability_n the_o more_o we_o be_v interest_v in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n the_o more_o we_o discern_v our_o fayling_n in_o the_o best_a and_o renounce_v our_o own_o righteousness_n the_o more_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o thereby_o shall_v be_v more_o enable_v to_o perfection_n second_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v perfect_v in_o infirmity_n therefore_o if_o in_o all_o our_o action_n we_o aim_v at_o god_n glory_n subbordinate_v our_o chief_a good_a thereunto_o and_o still_o deny_v ourselves_o and_o best_a righteousness_n that_o he_o only_o may_v be_v glorify_v in_o the_o beginning_n and_o lead_v forward_o of_o the_o work_n this_o be_v a_o gracious_a evidence_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n hereby_o we_o may_v reap_v find_v comfort_n in_o the_o great_a sense_n of_o our_o infirmity_n but_o of_o this_o more_o heretofore_o in_o that_o rule_n that_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n a_o seven_o rule_n hereto_o be_v that_o see_v affliction_n be_v a_o gracious_a mean_n and_o trial_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n therefore_o hereby_o we_o have_v some_o light_n to_o discern_v the_o measure_n thereof_o especial_o in_o those_o affliction_n which_o strip_v we_o of_o rejoice_v in_o the_o flesh_n which_o usual_o be_v no_o mean_a encouragement_n to_o strive_v in_o well-doing_n that_o we_o may_v have_v praise_n with_o man_n serve_v our_o present_a turn_n 1._o such_o be_v slander_n and_o reproach_n for_o well-doing_n ill_a requital_n when_o we_o have_v do_v our_o best_a because_o happy_o we_o have_v mingle_v some_o carnal_a end_n therewith_o and_o 2._o disappointment_n of_o hope_n for_o present_a occasion_n both_o spiritual_a and_o outward_a 3._o no_o comfort_n in_o prayer_n have_v the_o word_n but_o rather_o great_a sense_n of_o corruption_n if_o now_o in_o these_o strange_a cross_n and_o confusion_n we_o can_v so_o carry_v ourselves_o as_o though_o we_o must_v be_v humble_v herein_o because_o some_o cause_n be_v in_o ourselves_o yet_o still_o we_o must_v and_o can_v go_v forward_o hold_v to_o the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n in_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o we_o have_v do_v and_o yet_o renounce_v the_o verdict_n thereof_o to_o be_v justify_v thereby_o can_v still_o in_o obedience_n to_o our_o god_n through_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n wrestle_v against_o these_o confusion_n as_o that_o still_o we_o prove_v more_o serious_a and_o spiritual_a in_o well_o do_v not_o so_o much_o to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o wicked_a as_o to_o approve_v the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n unto_o our_o god_n and_o grow_v more_o familiar_a with_o he_o wean_a ourselves_o from_o popularity_n and_o by-respect_n and_o retire_v ourselves_o into_o the_o secret_n of_o the_o almighty_a this_o be_v gracious_a evidence_n of_o our_o increase_n in_o a_o good_a measure_n of_o grace_n of_o our_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n and_o eternal_a glory_n assure_v ourselves_o that_o though_o in_o regard_n of_o corruption_n now_o more_o discover_v and_o oppose_v we_o be_v like_a to_o meet_v with_o more_o affront_n both_o from_o within_o and_o without_o yet_o as_o these_o do_v call_v for_o a_o great_a supply_n of_o god_n grace_n to_o subdue_v they_o so_o they_o argue_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o christ_n and_o by_o his_o power_n enable_v to_o perfection_n and_o comfort_v ourselves_o that_o as_o our_o great_a measure_n of_o trial_n argue_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n because_o the_o lord_n will_v lay_v no_o more_o upon_o we_o than_o what_o we_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o endure_v and_o will_v give_v a_o issue_n to_o the_o tentation_n according_a to_o his_o grace_n and_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v best_a for_o we_o therefore_o shall_v his_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o we_o to_o bear_v the_o brunt_n that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v overcome_v thereof_o and_o the_o same_o grace_n that_o sustain_v in_o the_o combat_n will_v enable_v we_o to_o such_o a_o conquest_n therein_o as_o that_o still_o we_o may_v hold_v of_o god_n free_a grace_n for_o our_o humiliation_n and_o wait_v upon_o the_o same_o for_o our_o present_a deliverance_n and_o hunger_n after_o the_o full_a measure_n thereof_o for_o our_o final_a deliverance_n out_o of_o all_o our_o trouble_n the_o last_o rule_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n and_o comfort_n therein_o be_v that_o golden_a rule_n of_o the_o bless_a apostle_n namely_o that_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o the_o best_a to_o those_o that_o love_n god_n even_o to_o those_o that_o be_v call_v according_a to_o his_o purpose_n that_o be_v see_v the_o work_n of_o our_o sanctification_n be_v of_o god_n free_a grace_n so_o lead_v forward_o the_o same_o that_o as_o may_v serve_v to_o our_o main_a good_a even_o to_o attain_v the_o goal_n and_o also_o the_o main_a end_n even_o the_o glory_n of_o our_o god_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o be_v like_a to_o meet_v with_o many_o interruption_n of_o sin_n and_o affliction_n to_o hinder_v the_o work_n in_o regard_n of_o our_o own_o inward_a corruption_n and_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n and_o outward_a occasion_n work_v their_o part_n yet_o see_v the_o lord_n promise_v to_o perfect_v the_o work_n he_o have_v begin_v in_o we_o therefore_o will_v he_o herein_o especial_o make_v good_a his_o word_n to_o supply_v we_o with_o such_o outward_a mean_n as_o may_v further_o the_o same_o namely_o the_o continual_a operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n furnish_v â—s_n with_o all_o help_v hereunto_o by_o the_o power_n whereof_o even_o all_o outward_a and_o contrary_a mean_n shall_v be_v wonderful_o turn_v about_o to_o the_o best_a unto_o we_o even_o to_o further_a our_o reckon_n against_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n so_o that_o if_o we_o find_v this_o experience_n in_o ourselves_o that_o we_o make_v advantage_n of_o trouble_n and_o sin_n to_o further_o we_o hereunto_o we_o may_v safe_o conclude_v that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a in_o us._n that_o we_o have_v attain_v to_o a_o glorious_a measure_n

the_o elect_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o mean_n thereof_o and_o end_n of_o the_o same_o yet_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o power_n and_o use_v thereof_o in_o the_o application_n of_o christ_n each_o must_v live_v by_o his_o peculiar_a faith_n thus_o of_o the_o general_n the_o special_a mark_v concern_v ourselves_o to_o try_v our_o increase_n in_o grace_n have_v partly_o be_v open_v before_o as_o include_v in_o the_o general_n only_o we_o may_v add_v those_o other_o that_o be_v before_o deliver_v in_o the_o chapter_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o this_o growth_n all_o which_o or_o most_o of_o they_o may_v also_o serve_v for_o trial_n hereof_o in_o regard_n of_o other_o thus_o concern_v the_o mark_n and_o evidence_n of_o spiritual_a growth_n it_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o place_n that_o we_o consider_v of_o the_o several_a let_n and_o hindrance_n of_o spiritual_a thrive_a together_o with_o such_o remedy_n as_o be_v suitable_a thereunto_o the_o content_n of_o the_o 10._o chapter_n case_n of_o conscience_n concern_v spiritual_a growth_n 1._o how_o we_o can_v justify_v our_o growth_n in_o grace_n notwithstanding_o we_o daily_o fall_v into_o many_o evil_n 2._o how_o this_o growth_n in_o grace_n may_v special_o be_v discern_v and_o approve_a see_v it_o be_v a_o mystery_n and_o discernible_a only_o by_o faith_n 3._o how_o we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o grow_v constant_a in_o grace_n and_o yet_o we_o do_v and_o may_v leave_v our_o first_o love_n and_o be_v subject_a to_o much_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o many_o spiritual_a defection_n which_o seem_v to_o imply_v a_o go_v backward_o rather_o then_o forward_o 4_o how_o we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o grow_v in_o grace_n see_v as_o in_o the_o natural_a birth_n there_o be_v a_o decay_n of_o the_o outward_a instrument_n of_o good_a as_o of_o light_n memory_n understanding_n hear_v so_o these_o also_o decay_v in_o the_o regenerate_a which_o be_v instrument_n to_o entertain_v the_o mean_n of_o spiritual_a growth_n it_o may_v therefore_o seem_v that_o there_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o decay_n of_o such_o effect_n as_o do_v ordinary_o arise_v from_o those_o mean_n as_o of_o zeal_n conscience_n courage_n which_o be_v quicken_v and_o enlarge_v by_o the_o mean_n 5_o whether_o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o the_o saint_n ofttimes_o by_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n do_v cause_n a_o suspension_n of_o the_o operation_n thereof_o so_o far_o as_o that_o the_o saint_n be_v force_v to_o question_v the_o very_a truth_n thereof_o yet_o than_o we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o grow_v in_o grace_n 6._o whether_o the_o saint_n necessary_o must_v receive_v comfort_n in_o these_o distress_n or_o shall_v recover_v their_o former_a feel_n and_o comfort_n there_o chap._n x._o case_n of_o conscience_n to_o be_v resolve_v concern_v grow_v in_o grace_n 1_o how_o can_v we_o be_v say_v to_o grow_v in_o grace_n when_o as_o yet_o we_o daily_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n and_o so_o shall_v do_v so_o long_o as_o we_o live_v answer_n first_o these_o ground_n must_v be_v lay_v 1._o in_o regard_n of_o god_n 1._o his_o wisdom_n in_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n and_o show_v his_o power_n in_o our_o weakness_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o there_o may_v be_v a_o continual_a fail_n and_o humble_v in_o sin_n yet_o see_v our_o god_n bring_v light_a out_o of_o darkness_n though_o we_o may_v and_o do_v sin_n yet_o our_o god_n can_v and_o do_v turn_v this_o to_o be_v matter_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n 2._o and_o see_v the_o lord_n show_v his_o power_n in_o our_o weakness_n therefore_o do_v he_o by_o his_o power_n not_o only_o restrain_v the_o corruption_n of_o sin_n commit_v but_o raise_v also_o thereout_o matter_n of_o our_o growth_n 3_o and_o see_v the_o lord_n alwise_a and_o sufficient_a perfect_v his_o glory_n by_o our_o infirmity_n as_o thereby_o 1._o strip_v we_o of_o all_o boast_n in_o our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o 2._o send_v we_o daily_o to_o be_v renew_a in_o christ_n and_o 3._o so_o haste_v we_o out_o of_o the_o daily_a sense_n of_o our_o corruption_n to_o desire_v perfection_n and_o 4._o give_v we_o experience_n by_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o fail_n to_o be_v more_o watchful_a against_o the_o same_o 5_o more_o just_o to_o hate_v they_o and_o 6._o more_o earnest_o to_o desire_v to_o be_v rid_v of_o they_o therefore_o howsoever_o there_o may_v be_v infirmitte_v in_o we_o yet_o shall_v these_o tend_v to_o the_o perfection_n of_o god_n glory_n and_o so_o to_o the_o enable_v we_o to_o bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n 2_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n avayle_v hereto_o not_o only_o general_a that_o all_o thing_n shall_v work_v together_o for_o the_o best_a to_o those_o that_o be_v call_v according_a to_o his_o purpose_n rom._n 8.28_o and_o therefore_o our_o affliction_n yea_o our_o sin_n shall_v turn_v to_o our_o good_a yea_o to_o the_o best_a but_o his_o special_a promise_n stand_v good_a here_o that_o he_o will_v love_v we_o to_o the_o end_n and_o therefore_o by_o partake_v in_o some_o measure_n thereof_o in_o apply_v deceitful_a remedy_n to_o what_o they_o know_v 2._o as_o for_o the_o affect_v and_o break_v of_o their_o heart_n with_o the_o sense_n thereof_o their_o main_a study_n be_v how_o to_o harden_v their_o heart_n the_o more_o either_o by_o smother_a sin_n within_o in_o not_o acknowledge_v the_o same_o or_o else_o by_o plaster_v it_o over_o with_o such_o unfit_a and_o deceitful_a plaster_n which_o though_o they_o may_v give_v some_o ease_n for_o the_o time_n or_o make_v show_v of_o soundness_n yet_o they_o cause_v more_o inward_a rottenness_n and_o rankle_a of_o the_o sore_a and_o therefore_o here_o through_o the_o perverseness_n of_o their_o judgement_n concern_v the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n they_o be_v marvelous_a skilful_a to_o deceive_v and_o harden_v their_o heart_n by_o a_o false_a application_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n as_o if_o it_o serve_v only_o either_o to_o hide_v their_o sin_n that_o they_o need_v not_o take_v notice_n thereof_o or_o use_v to_o qualify_v it_o so_o that_o they_o may_v rest_v secure_o therein_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o evidence_n that_o they_o have_v right_a in_o christ_n who_o come_v to_o save_v sinner_n or_o that_o this_o be_v the_o best_a evidence_n of_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o that_o they_o be_v more_o senseless_a thereof_o or_o might_n more_o safe_o wallow_v therein_o as_o if_o they_o may_v be_v more_o bold_a in_o sin_n because_o his_o merit_n be_v sufficient_a to_o expiate_v whatsoever_o they_o can_v commit_v as_o if_o the_o more_o they_o commit_v the_o more_o they_o may_v hope_v to_o have_v benefit_n by_o christ_n and_o therefore_o as_o they_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n though_o by_o it_o they_o may_v and_o shall_v eftsoon_o be_v challenge_v and_o affright_v with_o the_o horror_n of_o their_o sin_n yet_o now_o do_v they_o grow_v more_o cunning_a to_o deceive_v themselves_o herein_o as_o esteem_v these_o item_n of_o the_o spirit_n either_o to_o be_v fit_n of_o melancholy_a or_o else_o some_o false_a alarm_n of_o satan_n or_o their_o own_o cowardly_a heart_n not_o know_v their_o liberty_n or_o be_v too_o scrupulous_a in_o it_o not_o know_v their_o worth_n in_o christ_n not_o dare_v to_o improve_v the_o same_o nay_o rather_o than_o fail_v they_o will_v not_o here_o stick_v to_o fly_v in_o the_o face_n of_o god_n when_o their_o sin_n thus_o stare_v they_o in_o face_n as_o if_o god_n envy_v their_o happiness_n in_o cross_v their_o lust_n and_o sauce_n they_o with_o such_o bitterness_n or_o rather_o that_o he_o do_v it_o but_o to_o try_v their_o courage_n if_o for_o a_o little_a gnaw_v or_o faint_v they_o will_v give_v over_o the_o chase_n and_o betray_v their_o liberty_n upon_o such_o false_a alarm_n and_o therefore_o now_o their_o main_a study_n be_v either_o to_o neglect_v such_o sharp_a item_n as_o not_o concern_v they_o or_o else_o to_o wipe_v they_o away_o by_o wade_v deep_a in_o sin_n that_o so_o they_o may_v put_v out_o the_o true_a light_n altogether_o and_o thereby_o become_v past_a feel_n that_o so_o they_o may_v go_v on_o secure_o and_o make_v up_o the_o measure_n of_o iniquity_n as_o if_o therein_o consist_v the_o main_a of_o their_o happiness_n yea_o though_o the_o lord_n herein_o usual_o fail_v not_o to_o arrest_v they_o with_o many_o fearful_a sergeant_n within_o and_o cross_n without_o yet_o all_o these_o prove_v yet_o further_a mean_n to_o the_o harden_v of_o their_o heart_n and_o increase_v of_o rebellion_n as_o enrage_v the_o heart_n more_o desperate_o against_o god_n as_o if_o he_o do_v they_o great_a wrong_n and_o enflame_v the_o heart_n more_o vehement_o with_o the_o desire_n of_o sin_n the_o more_o they_o be_v outward_o restrain_v in_o the_o act_n thereof_o and_o so_o provoke_a more_o greedy_o to_o the_o apprehend_n of_o such_o false_a rule_n and_o occasion_n whereby_o they_o may_v more_o secure_o attain_v their_o desire_n and_o by_o limit_v other_o to_o their_o scantling_n and_o draw_v they_o into_o the_o same_o excess_n with_o they_o may_v thereby_o more_o safe_o justify_v and_o maintain_v whatsoever_o wickedness_n thus_o do_v the_o wicked_a differ_v from_o the_o godly_a in_o the_o judgement_n and_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n the_o like_a may_v be_v observe_v in_o the_o second_o degree_n of_o apprehension_n namely_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n therewith_o for_o touch_v the_o godly_a they_o indeed_o howsoever_o they_o may_v for_o a_o time_n lie_v in_o some_o slumber_n after_o sin_n be_v commit_v yet_o still_o their_o heart_n be_v awake_a in_o some_o notion_n thereof_o some_o present_a touch_n they_o shall_v have_v by_o the_o daunt_a of_o their_o spirit_n that_o all_o be_v not_o well_o yea_o their_o spirit_n and_o presage_v some_o fearful_a effect_n to_o follow_v if_o it_o be_v not_o speedy_o prevent_v their_o heart_n will_v now_o misgive_v they_o that_o all_o be_v not_o well_o it_o be_v much_o better_o before_o with_o they_o they_o find_v more_o life_n in_o prayer_n more_o boldness_n in_o god_n presence_n their_o sleep_n be_v break_v and_o troublesome_a end_v in_o sick_a sit_n and_o their_o peace_n be_v interrupt_v and_o darken_v with_o thick_a cloud_n threaten_v some_o sharp_a storm_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v desirous_a to_o be_v thorough_o awaken_v yea_o though_o it_o be_v to_o their_o great_a confusion_n and_o present_a terror_n that_o so_o they_o may_v prevent_v the_o storm_n approach_v this_o be_v once_o that_o in_o their_o great_a slumber_n now_o they_o grow_v more_o and_o more_o sensible_a of_o their_o former_a state_n and_o so_o conclude_v it_o be_v better_a with_o they_o then_o now_o and_o so_o grow_v also_o more_o sensible_a of_o their_o present_a estate_n and_o labour_n yet_o more_o to_o be_v convict_v and_o abase_v therein_o ready_a to_o entertain_v all_o holy_a occasion_n which_o may_v effect_v the_o same_o thus_o be_v it_o with_o the_o saint_n in_o their_o great_a slumber_n in_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o with_o the_o hypocrite_n as_o usual_o he_o have_v no_o remorse_n for_o his_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v the_o chief_a joy_n and_o delight_n of_o his_o soul_n so_o do_v he_o labour_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o harden_v his_o heart_n therein_o condemn_v his_o former_a abstinence_n to_o be_v but_o preciseness_n or_o madness_n that_o lose_v he_o the_o experience_n of_o such_o sweetness_n and_o content_n and_o reject_v all_o mean_n which_o may_v awake_v he_o
prepare_v they_o to_o christ_n though_o other_o of_o another_o spirit_n either_o harden_v in_o sin_n or_o puff_v up_o with_o conceit_n of_o natural_a and_o civil_a righteousness_n have_v need_n of_o more_o batter_a and_o abase_v to_o make_v they_o yield_v to_o god_n and_o therefore_o the_o law_n must_v have_v his_o place_n in_o all_o though_o not_o in_o the_o same_o measure_n of_o work_v for_o as_o it_o fall_v out_o among_o disease_a one_o all_o that_o seek_v to_o the_o physician_n be_v not_o in_o a_o like_a measure_n distress_v some_o only_o have_v some_o grudge_n of_o sickness_n and_o yet_o for_o fear_v of_o further_a extremity_n seek_v help_n to_o prevent_v it_o other_o be_v fall_v into_o some_o sit_v before_o they_o seek_v help_v other_o be_v dangerous_o sick_a before_o they_o use_v the_o mean_n so_o be_v it_o with_o christian_n in_o their_o conversion_n some_o have_v only_o some_o grudge_n and_o yet_o in_o wisdom_n run_v to_o christ_n to_o prevent_v extremity_n other_o again_o be_v force_v to_o fly_v unto_o he_o upon_o sense_n of_o some_o pang_n though_o not_o in_o extremity_n whereas_o some_o be_v put_v even_o to_o the_o plunge_n of_o life_n with_o the_o extremity_n of_o despair_n before_o they_o seek_v unto_o he_o so_o that_o all_o be_v not_o alike_o distress_v and_o yet_o all_o seek_v to_o the_o true_a mean_n of_o comfort_n and_o so_o be_v relieve_v according_a to_o their_o several_a necessity_n and_o occasion_n and_o thus_o of_o the_o three_o case_n as_o for_o the_o other_o case_n of_o the_o insensible_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n whereby_o it_o may_v seem_v that_o we_o grow_v not_o because_o we_o discern_v it_o not_o and_o such_o like_a these_o have_v be_v sufficient_o answer_v before_o another_o main_a case_n there_o be_v concern_v the_o supposition_n of_o fall_v into_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o the_o saint_n be_v often_o trouble_v withal_o this_o we_o shall_v by_o god_n grace_n satisfy_v elsewhere_o in_o our_o next_o endeavour_n concern_v the_o cure_n of_o a_o wound_a spirit_n there_o remain_v yet_o one_o special_a case_n to_o be_v resolve_v namely_o that_o whereas_o some_o of_o the_o saint_n have_v walk_v so_o constant_o with_o god_n as_o that_o they_o have_v be_v not_o only_o free_v from_o such_o gross_a evil_n as_o other_o have_v fall_v into_o but_o also_o shine_v most_o glorious_o in_o a_o holy_a and_o constant_a course_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o great_a glory_n of_o god_n and_o good_a example_n of_o other_o seeing_z every_o one_o shall_v shine_v to_o glorify_v god_n in_o most_o powerful_a and_o constant_a obedience_n and_o the_o chief_a cause_n of_o the_o fail_a of_o other_o in_o both_o these_o proceed_v from_o themselves_o by_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o suspending_a some_o operation_n thereof_o what_o course_n therefore_o be_v to_o be_v take_v to_o prevent_v these_o fearful_a fall_n and_o to_o keep_v a_o constant_a gate_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o preserve_v we_o from_o fall_v in_o a_o fair_a and_o constant_a practice_n of_o universal_a obedience_n for_o resolution_n hereof_o know_v we_o that_o as_o the_o main_a course_n of_o our_o break_a and_o interrupt_v course_n proceed_v from_o ourselves_o so_o the_o only_a ground_n of_o our_o stand_n be_v from_o our_o gracious_a god_n who_o have_v supply_v we_o with_o such_o mean_n for_o preservation_n and_o constant_a obedience_n that_o if_o we_o be_v not_o want_v to_o ourselves_o we_o may_v and_o shall_v certain_o continue_v a_o most_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a course_n of_o holiness_n consider_v we_o therefore_o first_o that_o the_o way_n to_o keep_v we_o in_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o obedience_n and_o so_o of_o continual_a feel_n of_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v first_o a_o constant_a attend_v upon_o the_o mean_n both_o public_o as_o 1._o the_o powerful_a word_n preach_v 2._o the_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n often_o with_o due_a preparation_n 3._o often_o exhort_v and_o stir_v up_o each_o other_o to_o holy_a duty_n 4._o special_o conscionable_a keep_n of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o so_o 5._o walk_v in_o our_o evil_a calling_n with_o all_o faithfulness_n and_o diligence_n and_o yet_o with_o contentment_n and_o retire_a affection_n wean_a our_o soul_n from_o the_o love_n of_o these_o earthly_a thing_n by_o the_o experience_n that_o so_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n mercy_n may_v prevent_v extremity_n of_o despair_n now_o the_o conscience_n be_v thorough_o awaken_v by_o his_o ordinance_n and_o so_o may_v also_o lead_v on_o to_o a_o kindly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n upon_o hope_n of_o further_a application_n of_o that_o gracious_a pardon_n and_o prevent_v of_o such_o judgement_n which_o may_v further_o tend_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o this_o tender_a of_o pardon_n be_v not_o obtain_v before_o there_o be_v a_o inward_a sense_n of_o sin_n and_o open_a confession_n thereof_o that_o so_o the_o lord_n second_v his_o ordinance_n by_o the_o seasonable_a effect_n thereof_o his_o servant_n may_v be_v prevent_v of_o presumption_n and_o so_o lead_v on_o gracious_o to_o wait_v upon_o god_n in_o his_o sound_a heal_n and_o recovery_n and_o mark_v i_o pray_v how_o the_o lord_n do_v herein_o proceed_v with_o he_o though_o he_o have_v a_o proclamation_n of_o pardon_n and_o some_o hope_v no_o doubt_n thereof_o yet_o how_o long_o be_v it_o before_o it_o be_v seal_v up_o unto_o he_o what_o strange_a interruption_n and_o spiritual_a distress_n come_v between_o the_o proclamation_n and_o seal_v thereof_o to_o his_o comfort_n first_o he_o that_o hear_v the_o proclamation_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n yet_o he_o hear_v it_o with_o such_o bitter_a preamble_n &_o ingredient_n it_o be_v prepare_v unto_o he_o with_o sour_a herb_n &_o such_o heavy_a news_n as_o may_v make_v he_o see_v himself_o altogether_o unworthy_a thereof_o and_o so_o wait_v upon_o god_n for_o his_o sound_a recovery_n second_o he_o shall_v be_v encounter_v with_o multitude_n of_o sorrow_n as_o he_o have_v multiply_v his_o sin_n the_o sword_n shall_v not_o depart_v from_o his_o house_n who_o have_v smite_v with_o the_o sword_n and_o he_o that_o have_v abuse_v the_o wife_n of_o his_o friend_n shall_v have_v his_o own_o wife_n abuse_v by_o his_o neighbour_n and_o child_n ver_fw-la 10_o 11._o and_o so_o the_o lord_n will_v meet_v with_o he_o also_o in_o his_o kind_n meat_v unto_o he_o such_o measure_n as_o he_o have_v weigh_v to_o other_o that_o so_o he_o may_v acknowledge_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o by_o see_v his_o sin_n more_o clear_o in_o the_o glass_n of_o his_o judgement_n so_o seasonable_o proportion_v unto_o he_o in_o their_o several_a time_n in_o measure_n in_o the_o branch_n thereof_o hereby_o he_o may_v renew_v and_o perfect_v his_o repentance_n thus_o rough_o do_v the_o wise_a lord_n begin_v with_o his_o servant_n and_o yet_o merciful_o too_o denounce_v but_o a_o temporal_a judgement_n to_o such_o high_a hand_a and_o desperate_a sin_n that_o so_o his_o servant_n may_v be_v in_o hope_n of_o eternal_a mercy_n howsoever_o he_o may_v feel_v some_o temporary_a chastisement_n and_o thus_o do_v this_o physic_n work_v with_o his_o servant_n it_o bring_v he_o to_o a_o hearty_a confession_n of_o his_o sin_n in_o thankfulness_n unto_o god_n for_o not_o exact_v the_o extremity_n of_o his_o justice_n and_o so_o if_o it_o may_v be_v for_o remit_v or_o qualify_a the_o temporal_a judgement_n that_o it_o may_v not_o tend_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o because_o howsoever_o he_o have_v carry_v the_o matter_n secret_o yet_o it_o can_v not_o but_o be_v whisper_v and_o bruit_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n joab_n be_v but_o a_o hollow_a friend_n and_o may_v blab_v it_o out_o the_o detain_v of_o bathsheba_n may_v proclaim_v the_o same_o give_v ill_a example_n to_o the_o subject_n cause_n religion_n to_o be_v traduce_v therefore_o mark_v i_o pray_v you_o how_o the_o wise_a physician_n temper_v his_o potion_n his_o sin_n shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o yet_o chastise_v too_o that_o so_o david_n may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o the_o proclamation_n of_o the_o pardon_n and_o apply_v thereof_o that_o so_o his_o heart_n may_v be_v better_o fit_v by_o the_o humiliation_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n to_o prize_n and_o hunger_n thereafter_o
