general_o be_v not_o without_o difficulty_n when_o it_o come_v to_o be_v explain_v because_o it_o may_v be_v take_v in_o this_o sense_n viz._n that_o universal_o we_o can_v have_v no_o other_o idea_n of_o thing_n in_o our_o mind_n than_o such_o as_o have_v proceed_v from_o thing_n material_a and_o which_o our_o eye_n or_o our_o ear_n or_o our_o other_o sense_n have_v be_v capable_a of_o receive_v and_o again_o it_o may_v be_v so_o explain_v that_o although_o these_o be_v in_o our_o mind_n idea_n pure_o intellectual_a and_o which_o retain_v nothing_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o body_n yet_o so_o it_o be_v that_o they_o be_v not_o form_v but_o by_o occasion_n of_o the_o image_n of_o corporeal_a thing_n which_o be_v receive_v in_o the_o phantasy_n upon_o which_o the_o intellect_n make_v its_o first_o reflection_n and_o i_o think_v that_o if_o a_o man_n make_v but_o little_a use_n of_o his_o reason_n he_o shall_v find_v that_o it_o be_v in_o this_o second_o manner_n but_o the_o aforesaid_a truth_n must_v be_v understand_v for_o to_o say_v nothing_o of_o our_o pass_v from_o physics_n or_o natural_a philosophy_n to_o that_o of_o metaphysic_n or_o which_o be_v above_o nature_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o certain_a obstruction_n which_o conduct_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n from_o the_o contemplation_n of_o body_n to_o that_o of_o spirit_n and_o thing_n immaterial_a i_o think_v religion_n put_v the_o thing_n out_o of_o all_o controversy_n and_o doubt_n for_o it_o be_v indeed_o by_o the_o interposition_n of_o our_o sense_n that_o we_o see_v the_o heaven_n and_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o we_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n preach_v and_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o idea_n which_o the_o exercise_n of_o our_o sense_n introduce_v upon_o our_o phantasy_n that_o we_o put_v ourselves_o upon_o reason_v concern_v the_o deity_n but_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n know_v by_o our_o proper_a experience_n that_o when_o we_o have_v sometime_o serious_o apply_v ourselves_o thereunto_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o thing_n sensible_a which_o have_v give_v we_o the_o first_o notion_n or_o knowledge_n thereof_o we_o ascend_v to_o speculation_n concern_v the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o his_o property_n which_o be_v entire_o and_o absolute_o separate_v from_o the_o quality_n and_o matter_n of_o body_n although_o then_o our_o mind_n produce_v no_o operation_n whereof_o thing_n corporeal_a have_v not_o present_v they_o the_o occasion_n as_o saint_n paul_n say_v rom._n 1._o that_o from_o the_o workmanship_n of_o the_o world_n we_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o eternal_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o the_o divinity_n or_o godhead_n nevertheless_o there_o be_v some_o action_n of_o our_o mind_n which_o be_v pure_o spiritual_a and_o which_o in_o no_o wise_n depend_v on_o body_n any_o further_a than_o that_o corporeal_a object_n do_v furnish_v we_o with_o occasion_n to_o produce_v they_o by_o discourse_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o of_o the_o action_n of_o our_o mind_n which_o to_o speak_v proper_o have_v nothing_o in_o common_a with_o body_n even_o during_o the_o time_n that_o they_o inhabit_v there_o and_o be_v in_o some_o kind_n fasten_v and_o bind_v to_o their_o instrument_n why_o shall_v they_o not_o be_v capable_a of_o produce_v they_o without_o the_o service_n of_o the_o sense_n then_o when_o they_o be_v altogether_o losen_v from_o the_o bond_n that_o have_v join_v and_o unite_v they_o if_o than_o we_o can_v have_v any_o proof_n from_o the_o scripture_n that_o soul_n use_v their_o faculty_n after_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n that_o divine_a revelation_n ought_v not_o only_o to_o have_v sufficient_a authority_n to_o impress_v this_o belief_n upon_o our_o mind_n notwithstanding_o the_o contradiction_n of_o the_o pretend_a discourse_n of_o our_o reason_n but_o these_o difficulty_n which_o some_o person_n think_v to_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n itself_o ought_v not_o to_o leave_v in_o our_o mind_n the_o least_o hesitation_n or_o suspicion_n let_v we_o see_v then_o what_o the_o word_n of_o god_n do_v teach_v concern_v it_o those_o divine_n which_o have_v attempt_v to_o derive_v a_o proof_n of_o this_o verity_n from_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o wicked_a dives_n and_o lazarus_n have_v receive_v this_o contradiction_n on_o the_o part_n of_o those_o who_o believe_v that_o the_o soul_n lose_v the_o use_n of_o its_o faculty_n in_o death_n viz._n that_o what_o our_o saviour_n say_v there_o be_v no_o history_n but_o only_o a_o parable_n and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o impertinence_n to_o endeavour_v to_o make_v such_o discourse_n pass_v for_o narration_n of_o thing_n effective_o accomplish_v and_o thereupon_o there_o be_v much_o and_o great_a contestation_n because_o on_o one_o hand_n there_o be_v no_o other_o parable_n in_o the_o scripture_n where_o the_o person_n that_o be_v there_o introduce_v be_v design_v by_o their_o name_n and_o represent_v exact_o by_o many_o circumstance_n as_o lazarus_n be_v describe_v in_o that_o place_n or_o paragraph_v and_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o discourse_n which_o our_o saviour_n report_v that_o abraham_n and_o the_o rich_a man_n have_v the_o one_o with_o the_o other_o or_o cross_v the_o great_a gulf_n or_o abyss_n have_v no_o appearance_n or_o likeness_n of_o a_o historical_a narration_n to_o commend_v it_o to_o acceptance_n as_o a_o real_a truth_n wherefore_o see_n it_o may_v be_v in_o part_n a_o history_n and_o in_o part_n a_o parable_n let_v we_o examine_v it_o brief_o under_o this_o last_o consideration_n in_o all_o the_o parable_n which_o our_o saviour_n make_v use_v of_o in_o the_o gospel_n we_o must_v have_v regard_n to_o the_o end_n whereunto_o it_o tend_v and_o also_o to_o what_o he_o say_v that_o he_o may_v come_v to_o it_o as_o to_o what_o concern_v the_o end_n of_o this_o parable_n it_o be_v sufficient_o apparent_a by_o its_o conclusion_n that_o our_o lord_n have_v in_o design_n to_o show_v that_o the_o obstinacy_n of_o man_n mind_n in_o opposition_n to_o thing_n propose_v unto_o he_o on_o the_o part_n of_o god_n be_v so_o great_a that_o neither_o revelation_n make_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o miracle_n lay_v open_a before_o our_o eye_n be_v capable_a of_o move_v or_o affect_v we_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o although_o the_o dead_a themselves_o shall_v rise_v we_o shall_v give_v no_o more_o credit_n to_o their_o testimony_n than_o we_o do_v to_o the_o writing_n of_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n if_o god_n touch_v we_o not_o inward_o by_o his_o spirit_n all_o the_o rest_n

under_o who_o foot_n the_o whole_a fabric_n of_o the_o world_n do_v tremble_v this_o be_v he_o in_o who_o sometime_o i_o believe_v indeed_o but_o with_o a_o faith_n always_o imperfect_a always_o spot_v with_o some_o darkness_n always_o mingle_v with_o some_o remainder_n of_o incredulity_n who_o i_o now_o see_v full_o and_o manifest_o and_o to_o who_o i_o have_v liberty_n to_o approach_v without_o fear_n and_o behold_v he_o face_n to_o face_n after_o have_v in_o some_o sort_n represent_v what_o be_v the_o excellence_n of_o the_o knowledge_n which_o the_o believe_a soul_n obtain_v when_o it_o be_v receive_v into_o heaven_n there_o be_v no_o need_n that_o i_o shall_v stay_v long_o to_o examine_v what_o be_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o happiness_n that_o it_o there_o enjoy_v for_o happiness_n consist_v as_o well_o in_o the_o absence_n of_o evil_n as_o in_o the_o fruition_n of_o good_a which_o be_v inconsistent_a or_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o those_o being_n which_v we_o call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o happy_a as_o for_o evil_n there_o be_v none_o that_o enter_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n which_o be_v a_o marvellous_a happiness_n to_o a_o nature_n sensible_a as_o we_o be_v as_o for_o good_a thing_n what_o may_v they_o be_v which_o be_v suitable_a to_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n notwithstanding_o it_o be_v separate_a from_o the_o body_n certain_o as_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o eye_n consist_v in_o see_v agreeable_a thing_n and_o as_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o ear_n in_o hear_v pleasant_a and_o harmonious_a sound_n and_o general_o the_o happiness_n of_o all_o the_o other_o sense_n in_o exercise_v themselves_o upon_o those_o object_n whereunto_o nature_n have_v appoint_v they_o with_o pleasure_n and_o content_n the_o happiness_n of_o the_o separate_a soul_n consist_v in_o a_o suitable_a exercise_n of_o its_o faculty_n upon_o the_o most_o excellent_a object_n which_o can_v be_v present_v to_o it_o and_o in_o the_o joy_n that_o be_v consequent_a thereunto_o it_o be_v understanding_n therefore_o be_v both_o perfect_o purify_v in_o itself_o and_o fill_v with_o the_o presence_n of_o object_n so_o admirable_a its_o happiness_n in_o this_o respect_n be_v proportionable_a to_o the_o excellency_n of_o its_o operation_n and_o those_o contemplation_n in_o which_o it_o be_v perpetual_o employ_v if_o those_o therefore_o that_o have_v any_o spark_n of_o generosity_n and_o any_o thing_n brave_a in_o their_o soul_n do_v esteem_v those_o happy_a that_o have_v obtain_v any_o skill_n in_o those_o science_n to_o which_o man_n ordinary_o apply_v themselves_o and_o yet_o nevertheless_o a_o excellent_a philosopher_n have_v reason_n to_o say_v that_o one_o drop_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o celestial_a body_n be_v more_o to_o be_v desire_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o nobleness_n of_o their_o essence_n and_o the_o advantage_n of_o their_o utility_n than_o all_o the_o science_n that_o man_n have_v form_v upon_o the_o other_o being_n of_o the_o world_n how_o happy_a must_v that_o soul_n be_v that_o perfect_o know_v those_o thing_n who_o excellency_n as_o far_o surmount_v the_o sun_n and_o other_o the_o star_n of_o heaven_n as_o they_o be_v to_o be_v esteem_v more_o worthy_a than_o all_o the_o other_o body_n of_o these_o elementary_a region_n and_o if_o none_o of_o our_o faculty_n do_v employ_v themselves_o in_o their_o operation_n in_o a_o suitable_a manner_n upon_o those_o subject_n that_o be_v proportionable_a unto_o they_o without_o receive_v some_o sensible_a pleasure_n what_o may_v be_v the_o satisfaction_n that_o a_o faithful_a soul_n receive_v in_o be_v incessant_o exercise_v in_o such_o marvellous_a operation_n certain_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o eye_n and_o ear_n be_v great_a when_o they_o be_v fill_v with_o such_o object_n who_o colour_n or_o figure_n or_o harmony_n and_o justness_n of_o proportion_n be_v capable_a reasonable_o as_o satisfy_v the_o hunger_n that_o uncorrupted_a nature_n have_v place_v in_o those_o sense_n for_o pleasure_v proper_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o now_o when_o the_o object_n that_o be_v without_o do_v occur_v unto_o our_o faculty_n and_o apply_v themselves_o to_o the_o desire_n or_o capacity_n that_o be_v there_o with_o so_o much_o proportion_n and_o equality_n that_o the_o motion_n that_o they_o make_v there_o be_v neither_o too_o languish_v nor_o too_o violent_a but_o in_o a_o agreeable_a measure_n the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o mind_n when_o it_o employ_v itself_o with_o success_n in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o thing_n intellectual_a be_v much_o more_o great_a than_o that_o of_o the_o eye_n or_o ear_n because_o it_o be_v a_o more_o noble_a faculty_n and_o thing_n spiritual_a be_v more_o excellent_a than_o body_n and_o by_o consequence_n operation_n more_o exquisite_a and_o curious_a do_v arise_v from_o the_o occurrence_n of_o they_o from_o whence_o it_o follow_v necessary_o that_o when_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v come_v to_o that_o point_n of_o perfection_n in_o which_o they_o do_v as_o it_o be_v as_o much_o surpass_v themselves_o when_o they_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o nature_n as_o in_o this_o state_n of_o nature_n they_o do_v surpass_v the_o eye_n and_o ear_n and_o that_o when_o the_o object_n that_o be_v present_v to_o they_o have_v as_o many_o or_o more_o degree_n of_o excellency_n above_o those_o thing_n intellectual_a which_o we_o ordinary_o apprehend_v as_o they_o have_v above_o sensible_a and_o corporeal_a object_n it_o be_v indubitable_a that_o the_o joy_n and_o content_n that_o do_v accompany_v operation_n so_o divine_a must_v infinite_o excel_v that_o which_o can_v be_v minister_v by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o most_o perfect_a and_o sublime_a science_n the_o understanding_n be_v fill_v with_o such_o excellent_a knowledge_n it_o must_v necessary_o be_v that_o the_o will_v be_v full_a of_o love_n marvellous_o ardent_a towards_o those_o object_n from_o whence_o it_o do_v derive_v for_o thing_n that_o be_v excellent_a do_v draw_v our_o affection_n for_o their_o own_o sake_n and_o deserve_v our_o love_n by_o the_o sole_a respect_n of_o their_o beauty_n and_o the_o content_a that_o we_o take_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o be_v a_o cause_n that_o we_o love_v they_o also_o for_o our_o own_o sake_n because_o we_o love_v ourselves_o it_o can_v be_v that_o in_o that_o respect_n we_o shall_v not_o love_v those_o thing_n that_o minister_n to_o our_o satisfaction_n beside_o we_o be_v so_o natural_o dispose_v that_o we_o do_v not_o only_o love_v those_o object_n from_o whence_o such_o excellent_a knowledge_n derive_v but_o we_o singular_o esteem_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o we_o do_v enjoy_v it_o and_o it_o be_v for_o that_o reason_n that_o some_o have_v say_v that_o we_o have_v our_o eye_n above_o our_o other_o bodily_a sense_n because_o they_o discover_v to_o our_o knowledge_n a_o far_o great_a multitude_n of_o thing_n than_o our_o other_o and_o under_o great_a variety_n and_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o of_o all_o visible_a object_n light_n seem_v to_o be_v most_o beautiful_a and_o pleasant_a which_o come_v to_o pass_v not_o only_o from_o its_o natural_a constitution_n in_o that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o object_n which_o have_v the_o most_o proportion_n with_o the_o faculty_n of_o see_v but_o also_o because_o it_o be_v that_o which_o render_v other_o thing_n visible_a and_o which_o if_o i_o may_v so_o say_v do_v colour_n even_o colour_n themselves_o and_o give_v the_o form_n and_o figure_n to_o the_o form_n and_o figure_n of_o body_n so_o that_o we_o may_v not_o doubt_v but_o that_o bless_a soul_n be_v whole_o inflame_v with_o the_o love_n of_o the_o person_n and_o thing_n which_o on_o high_a be_v perpetual_o present_v to_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o understanding_n now_o love_n be_v of_o itself_o a_o thing_n full_a of_o contentment_n and_o joy_n when_o we_o enjoy_v the_o thing_n we_o
