sure_a pledge_n of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o thought_n because_o we_o discern_v and_o mourn_v for_o our_o inward_a fayling_n and_o so_o have_v a_o notable_a comfort_n of_o the_o acceptance_n of_o our_o action_n not_o so_o much_o from_o the_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n as_o from_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n whereby_o his_o spirit_n be_v convey_v into_o our_o heart_n do_v thereby_o still_o convince_v we_o of_o such_o evil_a which_o the_o world_n know_v not_o of_o and_o so_o withal_o approve_v we_o to_o be_v in_o christ_n not_o have_v our_o own_o righteousness_n in_o that_o we_o stand_v not_o upon_o our_o own_o justification_n which_o be_v confound_v by_o this_o sense_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o thought_n but_o that_o still_o we_o take_v hold_v of_o liberty_n be_v now_o grant_v to_o all_o looseness_n and_o evilnesse_n of_o thought_n 7_o or_o if_o he_o be_v disappoint_v of_o his_o hope_n and_o cross_v in_o his_o main_a desire_n yet_o here_o be_v his_o comfort_n to_o enlarge_v his_o thought_n therein_o to_o please_v himself_o thereby_o that_o his_o mind_n be_v as_o good_a though_o he_o can_v enjoy_v it_o he_o be_v rich_a in_o thought_n though_o he_o can_v be_v otherwise_o it_o do_v he_o good_a that_o he_o can_v still_o think_v thereon_o this_o give_v he_o hope_n that_o yet_o he_o shall_v prevail_v or_o this_o will_v please_v he_o that_o he_o can_v even_o think_v envious_o and_o disdainful_o of_o other_o that_o have_v attain_a what_o he_o have_v miss_v 8_o may_v we_o not_o observe_v it_o ordinary_a with_o wicked_a man_n that_o though_o they_o be_v out_o of_o date_n concern_v the_o act_n of_o some_o evil_n yet_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o insatiable_a desire_n of_o their_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o main_a comfort_n to_o think_v it_o fare_v with_o the_o wicked_a in_o the_o order_n of_o their_o thought_n general_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o that_o their_o main_a practice_n be_v to_o curb_v and_o extinguish_v by_o all_o mean_n all_o good_a and_o holy_a thought_n but_o to_o give_v rhe_n bridle_v by_o all_o occasion_n to_o vain_a and_o wicked_a imagination_n as_o for_o the_o regenerate_v it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o he_o as_o his_o hart_n be_v settle_v upon_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o a_o better_a life_n so_o be_v all_o his_o thought_n intend_v and_o purpose_v thereunto_o and_o he_o use_v all_o holy_a mean_n to_o nourish_v these_o holy_a thought_n by_o prayer_n meditation_n hear_v and_o read_v the_o word_n and_o he_o avoyd_v careful_o all_o mean_n which_o may_v interrupt_v or_o divert_v the_o same_o as_o idleness_n ill_a company_n wicked_a object_n wander_v of_o his_o sense_n discontent_n 4_o if_o evil_a thought_n be_v raise_v up_o by_o nature_n corruption_n or_o
satan_n iniection_n or_o occasion_v from_o without_o by_o worldly_a object_n herein_o appear_v the_o wisdom_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n first_o not_o to_o give_v way_n unto_o they_o he_o suffer_v not_o his_o hart_n to_o run_v after_o his_o eye_n no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v delight_v with_o it_o to_o be_v ensnare_v with_o the_o pleasure_n thereof_o but_o by_o all_o mean_n seek_v to_o stifle_v the_o thought_n at_o the_o first_o rise_n if_o it_o be_v blasphemous_a and_o terrible_a he_o reason_v not_o with_o it_o but_o reject_v and_o abandon_v it_o with_o all_o detestation_n and_o horror_n by_o prayer_n repentance_n &_o humiliation_n repel_v the_o same_o if_o it_o be_v good_a &_o yet_o not_o seasonable_a as_o interrupt_v in_o prayer_n meditation_n hear_v the_o word_n and_o he_o reject_v it_o likewise_o speedy_o as_o a_o bratte_n of_o satan_n angel-like_o brightness_n and_o so_o continue_v with_o fear_n and_o watchfulness_n in_o his_o intend_a duty_n 5_o as_o for_o the_o at_o the_o ghastly_a appearance_n of_o they_o 7._o especial_o whereas_o satan_n will_v now_o shroud_v himself_o even_o under_o our_o holy_a purpose_n of_o humiliation_n either_o by_o raise_v up_o some_o tickle_a delight_n of_o the_o sin_n which_o we_o labour_v by_o most_o earnest_a and_o sorrowful_a thought_n to_o judge_v in_o our_o self_n or_o else_o mingle_v with_o these_o thought_n of_o sorrow_n melancholy_a passion_n to_o distract_v and_o divert_v they_o from_o the_o true_a end_n or_o else_o to_o eat_v out_o this_o flourish_a gourd_n of_o our_o most_o intentive_a &_o humble_a thought_n with_o some_o worm_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n desert_n etc._n etc._n have_v not_o the_o holy_a heart_n need_v to_o keep_v a_o special_a watch_n herein_o do_v it_o not_o wise_o suspect_v itself_o in_o regard_n of_o these_o dead_a fly_n that_o be_v like_a to_o corrupt_v the_o most_o precious_a ointment_n and_o to_o deprive_v it_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o sound_a humiliation_n though_o not_o entice_v it_o again_o unto_o the_o same_o sin_n yet_o change_v it_o hereby_o into_o a_o more_o grievous_a and_o dangerous_a evil_n another_o point_n of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n in_o watch_v over_o the_o thought_n ordinary_a to_o the_o elect_a where_o in_o he_o exceed_v the_o unregenerate_a be_v a_o wise_a single_v out_o and_o encounter_v of_o they_o as_o whereas_o there_o be_v no_o child_n of_o god_n but_o be_v subject_a to_o one_o sin_n above_o another_o therefore_o it_o be_v his_o especial_a care_n to_o curb_v his_o thought_n concern_v it_o though_o he_o neglect_v not_o any_o other_o yet_o principal_o he_o attend_v such_o thought_n as_o tend_v this_o way_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o as_o it_o usual_o fall_v out_o that_o as_o he_o shall_v find_v himself_o defective_a it_o be_v his_o wisdom_n to_o drown_v his_o head_n to_o bedward_o that_o he_o may_v lie_v in_o his_o bed_n like_o a_o stone_n if_o he_o awake_v his_o next_o work_n be_v to_o toss_v and_o tumble_v his_o body_n that_o so_o the_o mind_n may_v not_o settle_v to_o any_o holy_a meditation_n if_o he_o dream_v of_o temporal_a good_a it_o grieve_v he_o that_o he_o have_v it_o not_o if_o he_o dream_v of_o evil_n it_o scare_n he_o to_o report_v of_o it_o once_o it_o be_v that_o he_o seldom_o or_o never_o dream_v of_o heavenly_a thing_n or_o if_o he_o do_v he_o account_v it_o as_o a_o dream_n and_o so_o it_o vanish_v especial_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o proper_a to_o the_o saint_n to_o be_v wise_a in_o entertain_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n and_o furnish_v the_o mind_n with_o holy_a meditation_n rejoice_v exceed_o in_o the_o now_o plentiful_a tender_a and_o gracious_a success_n thereof_o and_o grieve_v exceed_o either_o at_o any_o contrary_a motion_n or_o at_o the_o neglect_n &_o disappointment_n of_o good_a motion_n he_o know_v that_o by_o neglect_v such_o he_o may_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n &_o so_o grow_v to_o a_o quench_n of_o the_o same_o and_o thereby_o be_v draw_v to_o despite_n the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n if_o not_o direct_o &_o by_o profession_n yet_o indirect_o and_o by_o a_o carnal_a opposition_n in_o slander_v &_o persecute_v spiritual_a grace_n in_o god_n child_n and_o therefore_o his_o wisdom_n be_v to_o resist_v the_o beginning_n of_o evil_a and_o entertain_v the_o first_o motion_n of_o good_a that_o with_o they_o then_o outward_a evil_n as_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o occasion_n of_o all_o sin_n they_o differ_v in_o their_o entertainment_n as_o with_o the_o wicked_a they_o be_v either_o make_v no_o reckon_n of_o because_o so_o ordinary_a as_o they_o suit_n with_o the_o belove_a sin_n so_o they_o be_v more_o welcome_a and_o feed_v on_o as_o the_o chief_a refresh_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o though_o it_o can_v do_v ill_o yet_o herein_o it_o pride_n itself_o that_o it_o can_v think_v thereof_o that_o it_o can_v wish_v opportunity_n and_o ability_n thereunto_o as_o we_o see_v in_o wicked_a old_a folk_n in_o beggar_n they_o can_v think_v evil_a though_o they_o dare_v not_o do_v it_o it_o do_v they_o good_a to_o think_v of_o it_o though_o now_o they_o be_v past_a date_n &c_n &c_n but_o same_o especial_o whereas_o not_o only_o in_o the_o day_n but_o in_o the_o night_n also_o the_o mind_n as_o it_o always_o be_v in_o action_n so_o be_v exercise_v as_o well_o with_o evil_n as_o it_o be_v with_o good_a thought_n we_o may_v now_o observe_v this_o difference_n herein_o between_o the_o hypocrite_n and_o true_a nathaniel_n that_o whatsoever_o evil_a thought_n and_o effect_n thereof_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o night_n these_o be_v if_o not_o for_o the_o present_a judge_v and_o disclaim_v yet_o by_o god_n bless_a spirit_n they_o be_v call_v to_o remembrance_n in_o the_o morning_n or_o upon_o some_o such_o like_a occasion_n in_o the_o day_n and_o so_o seasonable_o reprove_v by_o the_o spirit_n that_o know_v the_o heart_n and_o labour_n to_o purge_v it_o from_o all_o secret_a evil_n and_o so_o the_o conscience_n maintain_v peace_n inward_o with_o god_n and_o so_o thereby_o gain_v more_o fruit_n and_o spiritual_a rest_n hereafter_o but_o with_o the_o hypocrite_n it_o be_v same_o such_o as_o concern_v their_o aberration_n therein_o as_o of_o hypocrisy_n distrust_n worldliness_n when_o as_o the_o wicked_a be_v usual_o subject_a to_o such_o evil_a thought_n as_o concern_v shall_v discern_v they_o to_o arise_v from_o natural_a corruption_n by_o these_o mark_v first_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v trouble_v with_o they_o which_o be_v either_o novice_n in_o christ_n ignorant_a for_o the_o most_o part_n of_o heavenly_a mystery_n unexperienced_a in_o the_o power_n of_o sanctification_n and_o such_o usual_o be_v trouble_v with_o the_o tentation_n of_o blasphemy_n to_o puzzle_v and_o stagger_v they_o in_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o so_o to_o hinder_v they_o for_o go_v forward_o in_o grace_n or_o else_o they_o be_v well_o grow_v horrible_a thought_n to_o put_v they_o to_o their_o trial_n and_o so_o recover_v they_o again_o or_o in_o their_o fail_n they_o be_v plunge_v into_o sudden_a thought_n of_o despair_n and_o these_o usual_o be_v second_v with_o such_o blasphemous_a thought_n as_o to_o hold_v they_o therein_o by_o satan_n policy_n so_o indeed_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o put_v they_o to_o try_v their_o hold_n in_o god_n &_o so_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n without_o feeling_n and_o so_o in_o the_o end_n to_o recover_v feel_v again_o ann_n so_o also_o we_o may_v discern_v these_o tentation_n to_o these_o token_n by_o the_o manner_n 1_o if_o they_o come_v sudden_o and_o violent_o not_o without_o some_o impression_n of_o terror_n to_o the_o flesh_n 2_o and_o that_o they_o last_v not_o long_o of_o themselnes_n unless_o they_o fasten_v upon_o natural_a corruption_n and_o so_o receive_v fuel_n from_o the_o same_o for_o their_o further_a maintenance_n if_o they_o be_v strong_a and_o extraordinary_a either_o exceed_v the_o compass_n of_o our_o knowledge_n as_o tend_v to_o broach_v some_o new_a and_o fearful_a conceit_n in_o we_o of_o god_n religion_n etc._n etc._n or_o lead_v we_o beyond_o the_o compass_n of_o sobriety_n of_o religion_n contrary_n to_o what_o we_o have_v receive_v and_o be_v warrantable_a by_o the_o word_n tend_v to_o bring_v in_o all_o confusion_n of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n 3_o by_o their_o entertainment_n that_o the_o holy_a heart_n entertain_v not_o so_o much_o as_o parley_v with_o they_o but_o present_o abhor_v the_o very_a send_v of_o they_o be_v by_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n yet_o not_o unwilling_o draw_v to_o the_o same_o especial_o when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o do_v they_o most_o good_a and_o so_o be_v most_o intentive_a &_o or_o confound_v we_o therein_o last_o whereas_o we_o may_v ofttimes_o fall_v into_o strange_a distemper_n by_o reason_n of_o some_o fever_n or_o strange_a accident_n affect_v the_o body_n and_o disenable_v the_o faculty_n thereof_o yea_o many_o time_n promise_v and_o discover_v the_o same_o that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o acquit_v their_o function_n aright_o be_v not_o this_o now_o satan_n time_n to_o cast_v in_o such_o blasphemous_a thought_n if_o not_o altogether_o to_o confound_v we_o yea_o by_o our_o strong_a distemper_n to_o stumble_v other_o that_o they_o may_v take_v offence_n at_o religion_n yea_o by_o this_o mean_n to_o cause_v the_o name_n of_o god_n to_o be_v blaspheme_v and_o whereas_o it_o fall_v out_o that_o the_o dear_a of_o god_n child_n be_v oftentimes_o wound_v in_o spirit_n and_o so_o also_o disquiet_v in_o their_o inward_a power_n that_o they_o fâ—l_v to_o distrust_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n and_o conceive_v he_o to_o be_v their_o enemy_n that_o so_o he_o may_v thereby_o sink_v we_o deep_o in_o despair_n as_o conceive_v they_o to_o be_v our_o own_o that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n may_v appear_v more_o lively_a in_o sustain_v we_o in_o these_o desertion_n that_o his_o mercy_n may_v shine_v more_o clear_o in_o our_o deliverance_n that_o satan_n may_v be_v more_o confound_v in_o his_o policy_n and_o the_o saint_n by_o our_o example_n may_v be_v even_o judge_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o issue_n of_o death_n cause_n of_o these_o injected_a thought_n by_o satan_n either_o we_o have_v stand_v more_o upon_o the_o outward_a form_n of_o religion_n and_o bodily_a performance_n thereof_o then_o upon_o the_o inward_a strain_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o order_v the_o inward_a thought_n or_o else_o we_o have_v reject_v or_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v assault_v with_o these_o blasphemy_n against_o the_o bless_a spirit_n or_o else_o we_o have_v seek_v for_o help_v of_o satan_n in_o the_o time_n of_o our_o ignorance_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o now_o we_o be_v assault_v with_o blasphemous_a thought_n concern_v god_n because_o we_o have_v forsake_v he_o in_o the_o needful_a time_n that_o so_o we_o may_v not_o now_o seek_v to_o he_o to_o repentance_n certain_o pride_n of_o hart_n exalt_v ourselves_o above_o what_o be_v meet_v either_o in_o search_v after_o thing_n convenient_a or_o in_o conceit_n of_o profession_n or_o in_o our_o call_n be_v a_o just_a cause_n why_o we_o shall_v be_v leave_v to_o those_o fearful_a buffet_n or_o we_o be_v pester_v with_o multitude_n of_o wont_a thought_n and_o be_v careless_a of_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o please_v god_n to_o leave_v we_o to_o be_v buffet_v by_o satan_n with_o such_o terrible_a thought_n that_o so_o we_o may_v have_v more_o conscience_n of_o our_o ordinary_a thought_n keep_v a_o better_a watch_n of_o they_o especial_o if_o we_o grow_v to_o conceit_v that_o thought_n be_v free_a and_o so_o we_o may_v think_v and_o delight_v in_o sin_n because_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o will_v be_v worship_v in_o spirit_n if_o now_o by_o this_o position_n we_o shut_v god_n out_o of_o our_o heart_n will_v not_o the_o lord_n leave_v the_o heart_n to_o be_v smite_v by_o satan_n with_o these_o blasphemous_a thought_n that_o so_o we_o may_v herein_o see_v our_o folly_n in_o the_o other_o and_o whereas_o by_o give_v way_n to_o thought_n of_o sin_n we_o be_v easy_o draw_v to_o the_o act_n thereof_o which_o may_v give_v occasion_n to_o blaspheme_v god_n name_n therefore_o now_o we_o may_v expect_v such_o the_o very_a foundation_n and_o thereby_o procure_v the_o overthrow_n both_o of_o all_o sound_a knowledge_n as_o also_o all_o conscionable_a practice_n of_o religion_n 2_o be_v occasion_n of_o fearful_a terror_n &_o wound_n of_o the_o conscience_n 3_o and_o so_o proceed_v either_o to_o horrible_a despair_n and_o renounce_n of_o salvation_n 4_o or_o else_o produce_v fearful_a lunacy_n and_o filthiness_n of_o conversation_n to_o the_o offence_n of_o other_o 7_o yea_o usual_o their_o end_n be_v damnable_a heresy_n broach_v of_o strange_a and_o fearful_a conclusion_n to_o the_o poison_n and_o seduce_v or_o at_o least_o to_o the_o most_o grievous_a disturbancie_n of_o the_o whole_a church_n of_o christ_n 8_o and_o so_o proceed_v to_o open_a combustion_n and_o devour_a of_o each_o their_o estate_n or_o else_o good_a thought_n may_v arise_v from_o within_o either_o from_o those_o remnant_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o mind_n and_o conscience_n strive_v against_o sin_n or_o move_v to_o some_o present_a good_a or_o the_o spirit_n of_o illumination_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n hereof_o illightning_n the_o mind_n with_o divine_a knowledge_n and_o so_o move_v thereby_o to_o affect_v the_o godly_a be_v furnish_v with_o good_a thought_n and_o motion_n thereby_o to_o be_v further_v in_o sanctification_n and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o property_n of_o grace_n though_o it_o be_v molest_v with_o evil_a thought_n yet_o not_o to_o let_v they_o rest_v quiet_o with_o we_o but_o to_o use_v all_o diligence_n to_o quench_v or_o convert_v they_o to_o good_a so_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o thereby_o we_o may_v deceive_v ourselves_o and_o other_o out_o of_o which_o difference_n of_o occasion_n we_o may_v determine_v of_o the_o second_o point_n namely_o the_o difference_n of_o dream_n which_o be_v either_o natural_a such_o as_o proceed_v from_o complexion_n condition_n conversation_n etc._n etc._n 2_o or_o spiritual_a arise_v from_o our_o general_a call_n 3_o or_o divine_a such_o of_o life_n conversation_n etc._n etc._n other_o supernatural_a here_o the_o first_o rule_n of_o satisfaction_n be_v that_o though_o those_o which_o proceed_v from_o complexion_n be_v invincible_a yet_o see_v this_o be_v alterbale_n by_o the_o condition_n of_o life_n especial_o by_o renew_a conversation_n therefore_o they_o be_v not_o altogether_o to_o be_v neglect_v as_o argue_v our_o deprave_a nature_n which_o even_o in_o the_o very_a complexion_n be_v degenerate_a from_o what_o it_o be_v and_o shall_v be_v but_o we_o be_v to_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o by_o repentance_n especial_o see_v they_o often_o produce_v such_o evil_a action_n even_o in_o our_o sleep_n of_o lust_n anger_n etc._n etc._n as_o be_v abominable_a and_o though_o they_o be_v of_o good_a thing_n yet_o breed_v discontent_n and_o confusion_n of_o our_o happiness_n in_o that_o when_o we_o awake_v now_o be_v a_o hungry_a isa_n 28.7_o disappoint_v of_o what_o we_o dream_v of_o and_o so_o confound_v therein_o yet_o herein_o also_o to_o be_v comfort_v that_o be_v but_o dream_n if_o they_o be_v of_o evil_a we_o do_v not_o full_o consent_v to_o they_o if_o of_o good_a though_o disappoint_v yet_o we_o may_v be_v recompense_v with_o great_a goodness_n we_o have_v yet_o time_n to_o procure_v that_o wake_n which_o in_o our_o dream_n we_o miss_v or_o else_o to_o obtain_v a_o great_a good_a to_o turn_v our_o dream_n into_o constant_a practice_n of_o holiness_n that_o so_o our_o dream_n may_v be_v more_o pure_a and_o our_o daily_a carriage_n may_v be_v more_o spiritual_a and_o retire_v in_o communion_n with_o our_o god_n that_o our_o righteousness_n may_v not_o be_v a_o dream_n and_o so_o vanish_v accord_o as_o know_v that_o these_o dream_n though_o they_o be_v natural_a yet_o do_v convince_v nature_n corruption_n and_o so_o make_v we_o inexcusable_a if_o we_o will_v not_o be_v school_v by_o they_o as_o be_v a_o part_n of_o god_n ordinance_n to_o awaken_v we_o out_o of_o sin_n job._n 33_o 15._o and_o therefore_o as_o not_o altogether_o despise_v they_o so_o not_o rest_v therein_o as_o it_o be_v the_o manner_n of_o nature_n wizard_n but_o flick_v to_o the_o word_n for_o we_o as_o well_o in_o the_o night_n as_o in_o the_o day_n according_a to_o what_o we_o have_v either_o do_v or_o hear_v in_o the_o day_n therefore_o though_o we_o may_v not_o rest_v upon_o such_o dream_n as_o presume_v to_o foretell_v thing_n to_o come_v otherwise_o than_o we_o have_v be_v inform_v by_o the_o word_n because_o even_o a_o true_a dream_n of_o thing_n that_o fall_v out_o according_o may_v be_v a_o delusion_n unto_o we_o to_o provoke_v we_o to_o the_o contempt_n of_o the_o word_n if_o by_o the_o word_n we_o have_v not_o be_v inform_v thereof_o or_o desire_v not_o to_o
