scripture_n how_o and_o for_o what_o thing_n we_o ought_v to_o pray_v so_o have_v he_o set_v forth_o one_o manner_n of_o prayer_n in_o the_o which_o he_o have_v brief_o comprehend_v all_o such_o thing_n as_o we_o ought_v yea_o or_o in_o any_o wise_a may_v ask_v of_o god_n wherein_o he_o have_v express_v what_o be_v due_a please_a and_o acceptable_a to_o he_o what_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o and_o what_o he_o will_v grant_v so_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o herein_o omit_v that_o may_v be_v think_v upon_o to_o the_o praise_n and_o glory_n of_o god_o or_o come_v into_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n for_o his_o profit_n and_o commodity_n and_o this_o be_v that_o prayer_n that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n teach_v his_o disciple_n 11._o when_o they_o ask_v of_o he_o how_o they_o shall_v pray_v whosoever_o therefore_o shall_v ask_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o contain_v in_o this_o prayer_n they_o presume_v to_o add_v some_o thing_n of_o their_o own_o to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n they_o be_v not_o obedient_a to_o his_o will_n and_o they_o pray_v without_o faith_n have_v no_o word_n of_o god_n to_o warrant_v they_o and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v obtain_v nothing_o this_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v refer_v by_o the_o direction_n of_o god_n spirit_n unto_o this_o prayer_n howsoever_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o variety_n of_o word_n many_o good_a and_o godly_a example_n how_o that_o thou_o which_o be_v the_o god_n of_o all_o and_o rich_a unto_o all_o they_o that_o call_v upon_o thou_o in_o christ_n name_n have_v hear_v and_o help_v other_o call_v upon_o thou_o six_o they_o use_v the_o benefit_n give_v they_o before_o they_o ask_v thereby_o not_o only_o provoke_v they_o to_o ask_v more_o but_o also_o certify_v their_o faith_n that_o if_o thou_o be_v so_o good_a to_o grant_v they_o many_o thing_n unasked_a now_o thou_o will_v not_o deny_v they_o any_o thing_n they_o ask_v to_o thy_o glory_n and_o their_o weal_n last_o of_o all_o they_o use_v the_o read_n and_o weigh_v of_o psalm_n and_o other_o good_a prayer_n because_o they_o know_v that_o thereby_o peculiarly_a beside_o the_o other_o scripture_n there_o be_v no_o small_a help_n as_o may_v appear_v by_o paul_n ephes_n 5._o col._n 3._o where_o he_o will_v the_o congregation_n to_o use_v psalm_n hymn_n and_o spiritual_a song_n but_o so_o that_o in_o the_o heart_n we_o will_v sing_v and_o say_v they_o not_o that_o thy_o child_n do_v not_o use_v their_o tongue_n and_o word_n in_o pray_v to_o thou_o for_o they_o do_v use_v their_o tongue_n speech_n and_o word_n to_o stir_v up_o their_o inward_a desire_n and_o fervency_n of_o the_o mind_n full_o well_o know_v that_o else_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a mock_n of_o thou_o to_o pray_v with_o lip_n and_o tongue_n only_o oh_o that_o i_o may_v feel_v now_o thy_o spirit_n so_o to_o affect_v i_o that_o both_o with_o heart_n and_o mouth_n i_o may_v hearty_o and_o in_o faith_n pray_v unto_o thou_o now_o concern_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v pray_v for_o thy_o child_n know_v that_o the_o prayer_n teach_v by_o thy_o son_n most_o lively_a and_o plain_o do_v contain_v the_o same_o and_o therefore_o they_o often_o use_v it_o first_o ask_v of_o thou_o their_o heavenly_a father_n through_o christ_n that_o thy_o name_n may_v every_o where_o be_v have_v in_o holiness_n and_o praise_n then_o that_o thy_o kingdom_n by_o regeneration_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n may_v come_v &_o so_o three_o that_o willing_o perfect_o and_o perpetual_o they_o may_v study_v to_o do_v yea_o do_v in_o deed_n thy_o will_n with_o thy_o holy_a and_o heavenly_a angel_n and_o spirit_n these_o thing_n they_o seek_v and_o pray_v for_o namely_o thy_o kingdom_n and_o thy_o righteousness_n before_o and_o worldly_a benefit_n after_o which_o to_o come_v from_o thy_o mercy_n in_o the_o other_o petition_n they_o pray_v for_o thing_n to_o be_v take_v from_o they_o begin_v with_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v impudent_o pray_v for_o if_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o so_o break_v that_o they_o can_v forgive_v all_o thing_n to_o all_o man_n for_o their_o part_n they_o add_v their_o profession_n that_o be_v charity_n whereby_o they_o profess_v that_o they_o have_v forgive_v all_o offence_n do_v to_o they_o howbeit_o because_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o have_v pardon_n of_o that_o which_o be_v past_a except_o they_o be_v preserve_v from_o new_a offence_n they_o pray_v thou_o not_o to_o lead_v they_o into_o temptation_n by_o permit_v they_o to_o the_o perverse_a suggestion_n of_o satan_n but_o rather_o to_o deliver_v they_o from_o his_o importunity_n and_o power_n understanding_n satan_n the_o author_n of_o all_o evil_a oh_o dear_a god_n that_o thou_o will_v endue_v i_o with_o thy_o spirit_n of_o grace_n and_o prayer_n with_o thy_o child_n according_o to_o make_v this_o prayer_n always_o when_o so_o ever_o i_o do_v pray_v as_o for_o outward_a evil_n so_o long_o as_o they_o do_v not_o as_o it_o be_v enforce_v thy_o people_n to_o sin_n in_o that_o christian_n perfection_n do_v account_v they_o amongst_o thy_o benefit_n thy_o son_n have_v not_o teach_v thy_o church_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o take_v communion_n of_o thy_o dear_a son_n and_o church_n yea_o of_o thyself_o so_o be_o i_o guilty_a of_o self-love_n unmercifulness_n pride_n arrogancy_n forgetfulness_n and_o contempt_n of_o thy_o child_n for_o else_o i_o can_v not_o but_o be_v otherwise_o affect_v and_o otherwise_o labour_n than_o i_o do_v oh_o be_v merciful_a unto_o i_o good_a father_n forgive_v i_o and_o grant_v for_o christ_n sake_n that_o as_o my_o tongue_n sound_v this_o word_n our_o so_o i_o may_v in_o heart_n feel_v the_o true_a joy_n of_o thy_o bless_a communion_n and_o the_o true_a love_n and_o compassion_n which_o thy_o child_n have_v and_o feel_v towards_o their_o brethren_n that_o i_o may_v rejoice_v in_o all_o trouble_n in_o respect_n of_o that_o joyful_a communion_n that_o i_o may_v deny_v myself_o to_o honour_v thy_o child_n upon_o earth_n and_o endeavour_n myself_o to_o do_v they_o good_a for_o thy_o sake_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n i_o come_v only_o to_o thou_o to_o give_v i_o that_o which_o i_o can_v not_o nor_o must_v not_o elsewhere_o have_v and_o thou_o require_v it_o of_o i_o that_o therefore_o i_o shall_v as_o thy_o child_n come_v and_o crave_v it_o to_o thy_o glory_n as_o i_o be_o thy_o child_n through_o christ_n although_o here_o for_o a_o time_n i_o be_o bodily_a on_o earth_n and_o in_o misery_n again_o by_o these_o word_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n i_o be_o admonish_v not_o only_o to_o discern_v thou_o from_o earthly_a father_n and_o to_o know_v how_o that_o thou_o be_v almighty_a present_a in_o all_o place_n and_o of_o most_o purity_n to_o confirm_v thereby_o my_o faith_n to_o be_v provoke_v the_o more_o to_o fear_v thou_o to_o reverence_v thou_o etc_n etc_n but_o also_o i_o be_o admonish_v to_o judge_v of_o thy_o fatherly_a love_n by_o heavenly_a benefit_n and_o not_o by_o corporal_n simple_o and_o alone_o for_o oftentimes_o the_o wicked_a prosper_v more_o in_o the_o world_n and_o have_v more_o worldly_a benefit_n than_o thy_o child_n so_o that_o by_o this_o i_o see_v thou_o will_v pull_v up_o my_o mind_n from_o earth_n and_o earthly_a thing_n to_o heaven_n and_o heavenly_a thing_n and_o that_o i_o shall_v see_v further_o by_o corporal_a benefit_n thy_o heavenly_a providence_n for_o i_o for_o if_o thou_o place_v i_o thus_o on_o earth_n and_o thus_o bless_v i_o as_o thou_o do_v and_o hitherto_o have_v do_v from_o my_o youth_n up_o in_o that_o thou_o be_v nothing_o so_o careful_a for_o my_o body_n as_o for_o my_o soul_n how_o shall_v i_o but_o think_v much_o of_o thy_o providence_n for_o it_o be_v thy_o home_n earthly_a mind_v so_o little_a desirous_a of_o my_o home_n so_o unthankful_a for_o thy_o providence_n and_o fatherly_a protection_n here_o on_o earth_n to_o rejoice_v because_o of_o my_o home_n and_o the_o great_a glory_n thereof_o because_o thou_o do_v so_o provide_v for_o i_o here_o because_o thou_o do_v so_o correct_v and_o chasten_v i_o etc_n etc_n but_o alas_o i_o be_o altogether_o a_o etc_n etc_n but_o also_o for_o thy_o heavenly_a benefit_n for_o christ_n jesus_n for_o the_o promise_n of_o thy_o spirit_n for_o thy_o gospel_n etc_n etc_n yea_o even_o for_o heaven_n itself_o and_o thy_o whole_a glory_n 106._o as_o the_o israelite_n be_v for_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n and_o therefore_o never_o enjoy_v it_o but_o perish_v in_o the_o wilderness_n i_o be_o proud_a in_o prosperity_n and_o forget_v thou_o wax_v secure_a and_o careless_a i_o be_o impatient_a in_o the_o cross_n and_o too_o much_o consider_v worldly_a discommodity_n oh_o dear_a father_n forgive_v i_o thou_o in_o christ_n may_v be_v true_o know_v and_o honour_v both_o of_o themselves_o and_o of_o other_o inward_o and_o outward_o as_o by_o the_o contrary_a a_o man_n may_v easy_o perceive_v people_n study_n and_o godly_a exercise_n by_o reason_n hereof_o i_o see_v that_o i_o be_o far_o from_o this_o desire_n and_o lamentation_n which_o be_v in_o thy_o child_n ignorance_n i_o see_v my_o ignorance_n of_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o thou_o and_o thy_o name_n for_o else_o it_o have_v not_o need_v thou_o so_o by_o thy_o word_n to_o have_v reveal_v thyself_o i_o see_v also_o my_o own_o
