bosom_n their_o own_o tormentor_n the_o pride_n the_o wrath_n the_o envy_n the_o malice_n the_o revengefulness_n the_o bitterness_n of_o spirit_n which_o as_o they_o render_v they_o uneasy_a and_o intolerable_a to_o all_o that_o be_v about_o they_o so_o most_o of_o all_o to_o themselves_o and_o which_o while_n they_o prey_v wherever_o they_o range_v abroad_o yet_o still_o bite_v most_o keen_o and_o torment_o that_o heart_n itself_o wherein_o they_o be_v breed_v as_o poisonous_a viper_n gnaw_v the_o bowel_n which_o enclose_v they_o 3._o towards_o themselves_o which_o also_o may_v be_v consider_v distinct_o for_o though_o all_o the_o good_a qualification_n we_o can_v mention_v or_o think_v of_o do_v redound_v to_o a_o man_n self_n and_o turn_v to_o his_o own_o advantage_n repose_n and_o delight_n which_o it_o be_v the_o design_n of_o all_o this_o discourse_n to_o show_v yet_o there_o be_v some_o that_o more_o direct_o terminate_v on_o a_o man_n self_n wherein_o the_o themselves_o but_o do_v either_o disesteem_v themselves_o as_o to_o their_o more_o noble_a part_n in_o respect_n of_o that_o common_a excellency_n which_o belong_v to_o they_o with_o all_o other_o man_n or_o do_v over-magnifie_a themselves_o and_o be_v conceit_v and_o too_o well_o opinion_v of_o themselves_o in_o respect_n of_o any_o peculiar_a excellency_n wherein_o they_o imagine_v they_o outstrip_v other_o how_o ill_o do_v they_o treat_v themselves_o in_o their_o self-indulgence_n their_o gratify_v their_o own_o sensual_a inclination_n with_o the_o great_a danger_n and_o damage_n to_o their_o soul_n when_o they_o care_v not_o at_o what_o expense_n they_o make_v provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n thereof_o what_o unkind_a usage_n do_v they_o find_v at_o delicacy_n you_o may_v have_v better_o better_o belong_v to_o you_o and_o invite_v you_o the_o lord_n himself_o be_v your_o portion_n it_o become_v both_o your_o state_n and_o spirit_n to_o apply_v yourselves_o to_o a_o holy_a delight_n in_o he_o to_o let_v your_o soul_n loose_v and_o set_v they_o at_o liberty_n to_o satiate_v themselves_o and_o feed_v unto_o fullness_n upon_o those_o undefiled_a and_o satisfy_a pleasure_n unto_o which_o you_o have_v a_o right_a and_o in_o which_o you_o will_v find_v the_o loss_n and_o want_n of_o their_o mean_a enjoyment_n abundant_o make_v up_o unto_o you_o you_o have_v your_o natural_a desire_n and_o crave_n as_o well_o as_o other_o man_n and_o those_o may_v be_v too_o apt_a to_o exceed_v their_o just_a bound_n and_o measure_n but_o if_o you_o take_v this_o course_n they_o will_v soon_o become_v sober_a and_o moderate_a such_o as_o will_v be_v satisfy_v with_o what_o be_v competent_a with_o a_o indifferent_a allowance_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o earth_n and_o towards_o the_o lord_n let_v they_o be_v as_o vast_a and_o large_a as_o can_v be_v suppose_v they_o can_v never_o be_v large_a than_o the_o rule_n will_v allow_v nor_o than_o the_o object_n will_v satisfy_v the_o direction_n and_o obligation_n of_o the_o former_a be_v indeed_o proportion_v to_o the_o immense_a and_o boundless_a fullness_n of_o the_o latter_a we_o need_v not_o operous_o inquire_v what_o sort_n of_o person_n this_o direction_n be_v give_v unto_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o common_a duty_n of_o all_o to_o delight_v in_o god_n but_o it_o can_v be_v the_o immediate_a duty_n of_o all_o man_n that_o know_v not_o god_n and_o be_v enemy_n to_o he_o have_v somewhat_o else_o to_o do_v first_o they_o to_o who_o the_o precept_n be_v direct_o mean_v be_v the_o regenerate_v the_o righteous_a and_o the_o upright_a as_o the_o psalm_n itself_o do_v plain_o design_n they_o or_o his_o own_o people_n the_o most_o profitable_a way_n of_o consider_v these_o word_n will_v be_v chief_o to_o insist_v on_o the_o direction_n give_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o verse_n and_o then_o to_o show_v towards_o the_o close_a how_o the_o event_n promise_v in_o the_o latter_a part_n will_v not_o only_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o promise_n but_o even_o natural_o follow_v thereupon_o the_o direction_n in_o the_o former_a part_n give_v we_o a_o plain_a signification_n of_o god_n good_a pleasure_n that_o he_o himself_o will_v be_v the_o great_a object_n of_o his_o people_n delight_n or_o it_o be_v his_o will_n that_o they_o principal_o delight_v themselves_o in_o he_o our_o discourse_n upon_o this_o subject_n will_v fall_v natural_o into_o two_o part_n the_o former_a latter_a whereof_o will_v concern_v the_o import_n practise_v of_o the_o enjoin_v delight_v in_o god_n under_o which_o latter_a what_o will_v be_v say_v of_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o verse_n will_v fit_o fall_v in_o that_o we_o may_v more_o distinct_o open_v the_o import_n and_o meaning_n of_o delight_v in_o god_n it_o will_v be_v necessary_a that_o we_o treat_v 1._o of_o the_o delectable_a object_n 2._o of_o the_o delight_n to_o be_v take_v therein_o as_o to_o the_o former_a the_o general_a object_n of_o delight_n be_v some_o good_a or_o somewhat_o so_o conceive_v of_o with_o the_o addition_n of_o be_v apprehend_v some_o way_n present_a here_o it_o be_v the_o chief_n and_o best_o good_a the_o high_a and_o most_o perfect_a excellency_n which_o goodness_n and_o excellency_n consider_v as_o reside_v in_o god_n give_v we_o a_o twofold_a notion_n or_o view_n of_o the_o object_n whereupon_o this_o delight_n may_v have_v its_o exercise_n absolute_a relative_n 1._o god_n may_v be_v look_v upon_o in_o a_o absolute_a consideration_n as_o he_o be_v in_o himself_o the_o best_a and_o most_o excellent_a be_v wherein_o we_o behold_v the_o concurrence_n of_o all_o perfection_n the_o most_o amiable_a and_o beauteous_a excellency_n to_o a_o intellectual_a eye_n that_o it_o can_v have_v any_o apprehension_n of_o 2._o in_o a_o relative_n viz._n as_o his_o goodness_n and_o excellency_n be_v consider_v not_o mere_o as_o they_o be_v in_o himself_o but_o also_o as_o have_v someway_o a_o aspect_n on_o his_o creature_n for_o consider_v he_o as_o in_o himself_o the_o most_o excellent_a be_v if_o here_o we_o give_v our_o thought_n liberty_n of_o exercise_v themselves_o we_o shall_v soon_o find_v that_o hereupon_o he_o must_v be_v consider_v also_o as_o the_o first_o be_v the_o original_a and_o author_n of_o all_o other_o being_n otherwise_o he_o be_v not_o the_o most_o excellent_a from_o whence_o we_o will_v see_v relation_n do_v arise_v between_o he_o and_o his_o creature_n that_o have_v there_o be_v from_o he_o and_o beside_o the_o general_a relation_n which_o he_o bear_v to_o they_o all_o as_o the_o common_a maker_n sustainer_n and_o disposer_n of_o they_o observe_v that_o there_o be_v some_o which_o by_o their_o reasonable_a nature_n be_v capable_a of_o government_n by_o he_o in_o the_o proper_a sense_n viz._n by_o a_o law_n and_o of_o blessedness_n in_o he_o to_o these_o we_o consider_v he_o as_o stand_v in_o a_o twofold_a reference_n in_o both_o which_o we_o be_v to_o eye_n and_o act_n towards_o he_o viz._n as_o a_o lord_n to_o be_v obey_v portion_n to_o be_v enjoy_v and_o have_v most_o delectable_a excellency_n to_o take_v notice_n of_o in_o he_o that_o require_v we_o shall_v suitable_o comport_v with_o they_o answerable_a peculiarly_a to_o each_o of_o these_o consideration_n in_o respect_n whereof_o we_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o he_o 1._o as_o the_o most_o excellent_a lord_n most_o delectable_o excellent_a we_o take_v not_o here_o that_o title_n so_o strict_o as_o to_o intend_v by_o it_o mere_a propriety_n or_o dominion_n but_o as_o to_o ordinary_a apprehension_n it_o be_v more_o common_o understand_v to_o signify_v also_o govern_v power_n or_o authority_n found_v in_o the_o other_o who_o we_o can_v but_o esteem_v worthy_a of_o all_o possible_a honour_n and_o glory_n that_o every_o knee_n bow_v to_o he_o and_o every_o tongue_n confess_v
final_o to_o terminate_v in_o the_o mediator_n for_o that_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o mediator_n resist_v the_o name_n christ_n be_v the_o proper_a name_n of_o that_o office_n and_o the_o desire_n of_o know_v he_o under_o that_o name_n import_v a_o desire_n to_o know_v he_o in_o his_o office_n viz._n as_o one_o that_o be_v to_o lead_v we_o to_o god_n and_o restore_v our_o acquaintance_n with_o he_o which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v recover_v upon_o other_o term_n so_o that_o it_o be_v ultimate_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n that_o be_v the_o so_o much_o desire_v thing_n and_o of_o christ_n as_o the_o way_n and_o our_o conductor_n to_o god_n that_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n not_o absolute_o consider_v alone_o though_o he_o be_v even_o so_o a_o very_a delectable_a object_n as_o have_v be_v say_v but_o as_o he_o be_v relate_v to_o we_o and_o from_o who_o we_o have_v great_a expectation_n our_o all_o be_v comprehend_v in_o he_o it_o can_v but_o be_v very_o delightful_a answerable_o to_o a_o certain_a sort_n of_o delectation_n of_o which_o we_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v in_o its_o proper_a place_n to_o have_v he_o before_o our_o eye_n represent_v and_o reveal_v to_o we_o as_o the_o all-comprehending_a good_a and_o that_o in_o the_o way_n and_o method_n whereinto_o thing_n be_v now_o cast_v may_v at_o least_o become_v our_o portion_n he_o be_v some_o way_n to_o be_v enjoy_v even_o in_o this_o view_n it_o be_v a_o thing_n apt_a to_o infer_v complacency_n and_o delight_n thus_o to_o look_v upon_o he_o they_o who_o place_n felicity_n in_o contemplation_n especial_o in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o god_n be_v not_o beside_o the_o mark_n if_o they_o do_v not_o circumscribe_v and_o confine_v it_o there_o so_o as_o to_o make_v it_o stand_v in_o mere_a eontemplation_n or_o in_o a_o idle_a and_o vain_o curious_a view_n of_o so_o glorious_a a_o object_n without_o any_o further_o concern_v about_o it_o they_o will_v then_o be_v find_v to_o speak_v very_o agreeable_o to_o the_o language_n of_o holy_a scripture_n which_o so_o frequent_o express_v the_o blessedness_n of_o the_o other_o state_n by_o see_v god_n and_o if_o the_o act_n of_o vision_n be_v delicious_a the_o representation_n of_o the_o object_n must_v have_v proportionable_a matter_n of_o delight_n in_o it_o it_o can_v but_o have_v so_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o representation_n which_o answerable_o to_o the_o sensible_a want_n and_o desire_v of_o such_o as_o shall_v be_v delight_v therewith_o must_v have_v somewhat_o more_o in_o it_o than_o the_o common_a appearance_n of_o god_n which_o offer_v themselves_o equal_o to_o the_o view_n of_o all_o man_n though_o it_o be_v their_o own_o as_o common_a fault_n that_o they_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o more_o grateful_a and_o necessary_a addition_n that_o it_o have_v more_o in_o it_o be_v evident_a from_o god_n own_o way_n of_o speak_v of_o it_o for_o we_o find_v that_o his_o reveal_n himself_o in_o this_o delectable_a way_n 1._o be_v attribute_v to_o the_o spirit_n 17._o and_o as_o a_o work_n to_o be_v do_v by_o it_o when_o it_o shall_v be_v give_v suppose_v it_o therefore_o yet_o not_o give_v and_o that_o all_o have_v it_o not_o yea_o that_o such_o have_v it_o not_o in_o such_o a_o measure_n as_o they_o may_v have_v it_o unto_o this_o purpose_n who_o yet_o true_o have_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n already_o 13._o even_o as_o a_o thing_n peculiar_a to_o they_o from_o the_o unbelieving_a world_n for_o it_o be_v pray_v for_o to_o such_o as_o concern_v who_o it_o be_v say_v place_v the_o sum_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o happiness_n never_o aim_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n to_o have_v their_o spirit_n reform_v according_a to_o that_o pure_a and_o holy_a image_n and_o exemplar_n which_o he_o have_v represent_v in_o the_o gospel_n of_o his_o son_n the_o impression_n whereof_o be_v christ_n form_v in_o we_o 2._o that_o other_o have_v think_v they_o have_v not_o enjoy_v god_n when_o they_o have_v suppose_v there_o be_v no_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o but_o what_o consist_v in_o the_o rapturous_a transport_v apprehension_n and_o persuasion_n of_o his_o particular_a love_n to_o they_o and_o slight_o overlook_v all_o that_o work_n he_o have_v wrought_v in_o their_o soul_n as_o if_o it_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v account_v of_o not_o allow_v themselves_o to_o reflect_v on_o any_o thing_n in_o themselves_o but_o what_o be_v still_o amiss_o and_o vain_o seek_v with_o much_o anxiety_n and_o complaint_n what_o they_o have_v while_o they_o will_v not_o take_v notice_n that_o they_o have_v it_o nor_o apply_v themselves_o to_o improve_v the_o already_o implant_v principle_n that_o be_v in_o themselves_o apt_a to_o yield_v fruit_n of_o so_o pleasant_a relish_n it_o be_v upon_o this_o account_n requisite_a to_o discover_v and_o labour_n somewhat_o to_o magnify_v the_o intrinsical_v delightfulness_n of_o religion_n itself_o and_o to_o put_v the_o more_o of_o note_n and_o remark_n upon_o a_o well-tempered_a spirit_n even_o in_o point_n of_o delectableness_n and_o the_o matter_n of_o pleasure_n it_o have_v in_o it_o by_o how_o much_o it_o be_v with_o too_o many_o on_o one_o account_n or_o another_o a_o neglected_a thing_n there_o be_v only_o somewhat_o of_o doubt_n or_o objection_n that_o may_v possible_o lie_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o against_o the_o scope_n and_o drift_n of_o this_o discourse_n which_o it_o will_v be_v needful_a we_o endeavour_v to_o remove_v before_o we_o proceed_v to_o what_o be_v further_o contain_v in_o this_o gracious_a communication_n as_o 1._o it_o may_v be_v say_v do_v not_o all_o this_o tend_v to_o bring_v we_o instead_o of_o delight_v in_o god_n to_o delight_v in_o ourselves_o to_o make_v we_o make_v delight_v in_o god_n and_o in_o ourselves_o direct_o all_o one_o and_o so_o the_o fault_n which_o it_o causeless_o pretend_v to_o find_v it_o will_v real_o commit_v it_o be_v true_a that_o of_o those_o conclusion_n lay_v down_o in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o other_o part_n of_o scripture_n invalidate_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n vouchsafe_v to_o reason_v they_o out_o to_o we_o as_o we_o know_v it_o most_o nervous_o and_o strong_o do_v or_o be_v it_o less_o consolatory_a that_o can_v be_v for_o that_o depend_v on_o the_o two_o former_a the_o importance_n and_o
