question_n follow_v quest_n 1._o what_o be_v the_o first_o gift_n that_o ever_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o his_o elect_n answ_n first_o of_o all_o he_o give_v himself_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o the_o holy_a spirit_n this_o be_v the_o foundation_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v lay_v save_v qualification_n in_o the_o foundation_n before_o these_o the_o foundation_n will_v lie_v uneasy_o we_o take_v he_o by_o exercise_v our_o faith_n on_o he_o object_n but_o whether_o do_v not_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o some_o save_a preparation_n before_o jesus_n christ_n for_o there_o be_v those_o that_o be_v gracious_a saint_n that_o have_v conceive_v that_o there_o be_v some_o gracious_a qualification_n which_o the_o lord_n give_v to_o prepare_v for_o jesus_n christ_n answ_n there_o be_v save_a grace_n which_o do_v sanctify_v we_o unto_o god_n our_o father_n but_o whether_o they_o do_v make_v way_n for_o jesus_n christ_n there_o prove_v a_o difference_n but_o you_o may_v discern_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o point_n if_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v any_o save_a qualification_n before_o christ_n than_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o salvation_n before_o christ_n and_o christ_n nor_o his_o name_n but_o in_o a_o way_n of_o fellowship_n with_o he_o than_o it_o will_v unavoidable_o follow_v that_o whatsoever_o save_v work_n there_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v not_o there_o before_o christ_n be_v there_o it_o be_v true_a john_n baptist_n be_v send_v to_o subdue_v all_o flesh_n by_o a_o spirit_n of_o burn_a which_o burn_v up_o the_o covenant_n of_o abraham_n manifestation_n of_o our_o gracious_a union_n with_o he_o but_o for_o our_o first_o union_n there_o be_v no_o step_n unto_o the_o altar_n exod._n 20._o last_o but_o christ_n do_v prepare_v his_o tabernacle_n for_o himself_o to_o dwell_v in_o this_o be_v in_o the_o first_o place_n for_o instruction_n concern_v what_o be_v the_o first_o gift_n which_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o the_o soul_n before_o any_o work_n or_o promise_n he_o give_v save_v communion_n in_o spiritual_a union_n with_o his_o son_n this_o stand_v firm_a from_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o to_o my_o best_a understanding_n and_o therewith_o give_v we_o faith_n and_o all_o other_o save_v qualification_n and_o condition_n as_o it_o be_v hold_v forth_o in_o the_o scripture_n of_o god_n quest_n 2._o in_o what_o order_n the_o lord_n give_v the_o covenant_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o it_o whether_o faith_n before_o they_o or_o those_o blessing_n before_o faith_n be_v able_a to_o apply_v they_o answ_n he_o do_v give_v himself_o in_o work_v faith_n before_o faith_n can_v be_v there_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o faith_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o this_o faith_n do_v receive_v the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n himself_o by_o his_o spirit_n and_o it_o do_v also_o receive_v adoption_n and_o justification_n but_o to_o be_v able_a actual_o to_o apply_v it_o our_o first_o birth_n will_v not_o bear_v it_o for_o a_o man_n be_v as_o passive_a in_o his_o regeneration_n as_o in_o his_o first_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n in_o the_o root_n 1._o the_o first_o be_v the_o root_n of_o abraham_n covenant_n which_o this_o people_n much_o trust_v upon_o and_o that_o be_v it_o of_o which_o john_n baptist_n speak_v now_o the_o axe_n be_v lay_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o he_o speak_v mat._n 3.9_o after_o he_o have_v say_v think_v not_o to_o say_v within_o your_o yourselves_o we_o have_v abraham_n to_o our_o father_n vers_n 8._o so_o that_o all_o the_o confidence_n that_o they_o have_v in_o abraham_n covenant_n and_o temple_n and_o tabernacle_n and_o such_o thing_n be_v burn_v up_o and_o so_o they_o have_v no_o root_n leave_v they_o to_o stand_v upon_o and_o this_o be_v one_o thing_n intend_v by_o the_o root_n but_o 2._o second_o there_o be_v something_o more_o in_o it_o for_o with_o this_o spirit_n of_o burn_a the_o lord_n by_o the_o power_n of_o this_o spirit_n do_v cut_v we_o off_o from_o any_o power_n of_o our_o own_o natural_a gift_n and_o part_n and_o spiritual_a gift_n also_o whereby_o we_o think_v to_o lay_v hold_n on_o jesus_n christ_n and_o we_o be_v cut_v off_o hereby_o from_o all_o the_o confidence_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o sufficiency_n when_o once_o the_o lord_n intend_v to_o bring_v a_o soul_n unto_o himself_o for_o there_o be_v a_o usual_a preâ—idence_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o state_n though_o the_o lord_n have_v cut_v we_o off_o from_o hope_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o our_o parent_n and_o from_o boast_v of_o his_o ordinance_n yet_o we_o think_v there_o be_v some_o power_n still_o leave_v we_o and_o therefore_o we_o hope_v and_o will_v seek_v in_o our_o own_o strength_n that_o the_o lord_n may_v reveal_v himself_o to_o we_o in_o mercy_n and_o peace_n but_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v near_a unto_o we_o he_o will_v show_v we_o how_o unable_a we_o be_v to_o take_v up_o the_o least_o good_a resolution_n we_o shall_v find_v ourselves_o like_o bruise_a reed_n unable_a to_o hold_v up_o our_o head_n for_o christ_n come_v to_o seek_v and_o to_o save_v that_o which_o be_v lose_v so_o that_o christ_n will_v not_o declare_v himself_o to_o seek_v we_o until_o we_o be_v lose_v also_o how_o fair_a and_o green_a soever_o they_o have_v be_v all_o our_o fasting_n and_o humiliation_n and_o almsdeed_n and_o prayer_n such_o thing_n as_o the_o pharisee_n much_o boast_a in_o math._n 6.1,2,3_o etc._n etc._n but_o these_o thing_n be_v all_o burn_v up_o the_o fruit_n of_o bondage_n work_v unto_o fear_n and_o now_o all_o the_o hope_n be_v that_o a_o man_n set_v upon_o reformation_n but_o if_o the_o lord_n love_v a_o man_n soul_n he_o will_v not_o let_v he_o stay_v there_o but_o go_v further_a with_o he_o and_o show_v he_o that_o his_o prayer_n and_o fasting_n be_v all_o empty_a and_o fall_v short_a of_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o yet_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o quite_o out_o of_o hope_n though_o the_o law_n can_v save_v i_o if_o it_o can_v i_o must_v get_v i_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n and_o lie_v hold_v upon_o he_o for_o salvation_n as_o if_o all_o be_v to_o be_v have_v by_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n if_o once_o we_o can_v lay_v hold_n upon_o he_o and_o nothing_o else_o be_v require_v but_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o thereby_o my_o lay_n hold_v upon_o he_o i_o see_v plain_o say_v a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n that_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n in_o i_o as_o have_v be_v right_o observe_v and_o therefore_o i_o will_v trust_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o give_v up_o myself_o to_o he_o but_o now_o if_o the_o lord_n love_v thy_o soul_n he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thou_o there_o to_o rest_n he_o will_v not_o leave_v thou_o so_o he_o will_v press_v thou_o further_o how_o come_v thou_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n why_o thou_o take_v it_o up_o of_o thy_o own_o accord_n thou_o think_v all_o thy_o gift_n aâ—d_v duty_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o therefore_o now_o thou_o will_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v it_o so_o easy_a one_o that_o say_v lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n now_o i_o see_v it_o be_v not_o my_o faith_n such_o a_o faith_n as_o i_o be_v that_o will_v reach_v jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v not_o a_o faith_n of_o my_o own_o undertake_n that_o will_v serve_v the_o turn_n i_o see_v now_o christ_n alone_o must_v work_v this_o great_a work_n in_o i_o and_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n of_o his_o own_o ordinance_n therefore_o i_o must_v look_v for_o it_o in_o his_o word_n and_o in_o the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o sacrament_n therefore_o i_o will_v look_v up_o unto_o the_o lord_n in_o all_o these_o and_o wait_v for_o he_o and_o seek_v he_o therein_o and_o i_o hope_v i_o can_v seek_v and_o wait_v in_o that_o way_n though_o i_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o and_o so_o the_o mind_n you_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o the_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n will_v draw_v home_o the_o soul_n thorough_o to_o jesus_n christ_n will_v burn_v up_o all_o thy_o confidence_n for_o if_o thy_o soul_n be_v not_o utter_o lose_v so_o long_o as_o it_o have_v any_o root_n or_o power_n in_o itself_o it_o be_v not_o come_v to_o a_o utter_a selfe-deniall_n though_o i_o can_v work_v i_o will_v believe_v and_o if_o i_o can_v believe_v i_o can_v wait_v that_o i_o may_v believe_v and_o so_o here_o be_v still_o the_o old_a root_n of_o adam_n leave_v alive_a in_o we_o whereby_o man_n seek_v to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n this_o old_a root_n put_v forth_o itself_o and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v whole_o from_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n alone_o and_o all_o because_o there_o be_v a_o sprig_n of_o adam_n leave_v in_o the_o soul_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v marvellous_o apt_a to_o have_v hope_n and_o confidence_n more_o or_o less_o from_o some_o virtue_n or_o power_n in_o himself_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o small_a matter_n to_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o adam_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o nature_n as_o say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 11.24_o this_o be_v a_o marvellous_a strong_a work_n when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o act_v thing_n contrary_a to_o nature_n for_o nature_n be_v full_o possess_v that_o upon_o you_o you_o will_v find_v your_o heart_n ever_o unsettle_a you_o may_v find_v comfort_n as_o under_o the_o law_n you_o shall_v for_o the_o law_n will_v cast_v in_o comfort_n upon_o a_o man_n because_o of_o his_o obedience_n if_o he_o be_v marry_v to_o the_o law_n but_o if_o you_o shall_v believe_v that_o christ_n be_v you_o and_o comfort_v yourselves_o because_o you_o have_v be_v by_o god_n unto_o his_o people_n that_o when_o christian_n come_v into_o this_o country_n though_o they_o have_v be_v marvellous_a eminent_a in_o our_o native_a country_n yet_o here_o they_o can_v pray_v example_n thereof_o do_v not_o say_v what_o shall_v we_o be_v wise_a than_o our_o father_n &_o be_v not_o moderation_n best_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o consider_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v follow_v work_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v fill_v with_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o righteousness_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o and_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a reason_n of_o the_o point_n quest_n if_o then_o there_o be_v such_o gift_n of_o holiness_n what_o need_v the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o we_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o he_o shall_v shed_v abroad_o these_o thing_n into_o our_o heart_n can_v the_o lord_n carry_v a_o end_n the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n by_o these_o gift_n answ_n there_o be_v need_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o notwithstanding_o 1._o to_o keep_v these_o gift_n in_o we_o 2._o to_o act_n they_o in_o we_o 3._o to_o witness_v unto_o our_o soul_n by_o these_o for_o our_o comfort_n and_o the_o good_a one_o of_o another_o some_o scripture_n for_o all_o these_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o he_o shall_v keep_v these_o in_o we_o 2_o tim._n 1.14_o there_o be_v a_o worthy_a thing_n commit_v unto_o we_o how_o shall_v we_o keep_v it_o not_o by_o our_o own_o wit_n or_o wisdom_n careful_a watchfullnes_n and_o faithfullnes_n though_o such_o thing_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v want_v but_o the_o charge_n be_v keep_v those_o thing_n by_o the_o holy_a that_o which_o god_n give_v we_o though_o adam_n gift_n be_v in_o perfection_n yet_o not_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v they_o for_o he_o they_o all_o fly_v from_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o leave_v he_o naked_a and_o desperate_a therefore_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o lord_n give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v strong_a possession_n in_o his_o servant_n against_o the_o strong_a man_n arm_v 2._o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o act_v the_o gift_n give_v to_o we_o and_o enable_v they_o in_o we_o for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o keep_v possession_n do_v derive_v continue_v strength_n into_o our_o faith_n which_o put_v life_n into_o all_o
the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v how_o love_n and_o patience_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n do_v work_v the_o holy_a ghost_n stir_v up_o faith_n to_o thousand_o but_o they_o think_v they_o be_v in_o a_o sad_a and_o fearful_a condition_n and_o so_o they_o be_v very_o uncomfortable_a when_o they_o have_v great_a cause_n of_o rejoice_v but_o now_o lest_o that_o we_o shall_v always_o mistake_v that_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v free_o give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 2.12_o he_o indeed_o take_v his_o own_o time_n to_o discover_v it_o unto_o we_o to_o some_o soon_o to_o some_o late_a but_o this_o be_v his_o intendment_n that_o he_o may_v honour_v his_o grace_n upon_o we_o by_o all_o the_o rich_a and_o gracious_a gift_n which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o he_o do_v also_o reveal_v unto_o we_o the_o duty_n which_o he_o that_o may_v come_v upon_o we_o it_o be_v a_o strong_a scripture_n which_o we_o read_v in_o john_n 15.26_o when_o the_o comforter_n be_v come_v who_o i_o will_v send_v unto_o you_o from_o the_o father_n even_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n which_o proceed_v from_o the_o father_n he_o shall_v testify_v of_o i_o our_o divine_n have_v no_o place_n of_o more_o clear_a evidence_n to_o prove_v the_o jesus_n christ_n and_o than_o it_o be_v so_o when_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o to_o look_v unto_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o it_o and_o to_o it_o in_o he_o and_o as_o we_o look_v for_o our_o holiness_n to_o be_v perfect_a in_o jesus_n christ_n so_o we_o look_v for_o continual_a supply_n of_o it_o from_o he_o and_o this_o it_o be_v to_o make_v christ_n our_o sanctification_n when_o as_o whatsoever_o gift_n the_o lord_n give_v we_o we_o go_v not_o forth_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o may_v be_v a_o change_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o may_v spring_v from_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o may_v captivate_v our_o conscience_n unto_o the_o law_n that_o may_v restrain_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o constrain_v we_o unto_o duty_n but_o such_o holiness_n spring_v not_o always_o from_o our_o union_n with_o christ_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o conscience_n of_o duty_n without_o sense_n of_o our_o need_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o israelite_n at_o mount_n sinai_n deut._n 5.27,28,29_o go_v thou_o near_o say_v they_o to_o moses_n and_o hear_v all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v say_v and_o speak_v thou_o unto_o we_o all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v speak_v unto_o thou_o and_o we_o will_v hear_v it_o and_o do_v it_o they_o have_v well_o say_v all_o that_o they_o have_v speak_v say_v the_o
