account_v simple_o sin_n or_o evil_n but_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n now_o count_v natural_a which_o have_v both_o come_v upon_o &_o prevail_v upon_o the_o purity_n of_o our_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v in_o creation_n as_o for_o example_n ignorance_n in_o steed_n of_o our_o knowledge_n doubt_v or_o distrustfulnes_n in_o stead_n of_o our_o hope_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v evil_a for_o even_o as_o our_o creation_n and_o all_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v therein_o come_v from_o god_n make_v we_o to_o be_v denominate_v good_a because_o nothing_o can_v come_v from_o he_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a so_o these_o proceed_n from_o a_o contrary_a fountain_n that_o be_v satan_n and_o his_o malice_n can_v choose_v but_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o he_o be_v of_o that_o be_v evil_a &_o sinful_a and_o therefore_o concern_v doubt_v say_v that_o it_o be_v natural_a indeed_o but_o not_o as_o from_o our_o first_o creation_n for_o than_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v good_a but_o come_v unto_o our_o nature_n after_o the_o fall_n and_o so_o be_v deprave_a be_v evil_a special_o when_o it_o be_v refer_v to_o god_n as_o in_o all_o this_o question_n it_o be_v promise_v therefore_o from_o this_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v we_o salvation_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o we_o present_o lie_v hold_v thereon_o and_o therefore_o we_o can_v from_o doctrine_n of_o popery_n every_o where_o assay_v to_o persuade_v yea_o to_o drive_v man_n to_o doubt_v and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o diffidence_n and_o distrustfulness_n that_o natural_o we_o carry_v about_o with_o we_o in_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v as_o a_o man_n may_v say_v more_o than_o sufficient_a touch_v the_o popish_a opinion_n it_o be_v certain_o pitiful_a that_o they_o can_v see_v no_o other_o way_n or_o mean_v to_o prevent_v proud_a presumption_n but_o to_o incur_v the_o danger_n of_o distrust_n and_o doubt_v and_o it_o be_v the_o more_o pitiful_a doubtless_o by_o how_o much_o both_o in_o god_n religion_n yea_o and_o in_o man_n reason_n also_o they_o can_v not_o but_o know_v &_o confess_v that_o every_o singular_a virtue_n or_o good_a work_n have_v two_o sin_n set_v against_o it_o the_o one_o as_o disagree_v from_o it_o the_o other_o as_o contrary_a to_o it_o the_o virtue_n or_o good_a work_n as_o we_o now_o call_v it_o here_o be_v trust_v in_o god_n then_o what_o can_v be_v a_o more_o excellent_a work_n since_o our_o saviour_n say_v this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o christ_n that_o you_o believe_v in_o he_o who_o he_o have_v send_v and_o what_o be_v more_o contrary_a to_o it_o then_o to_o doubt_n or_o distrust_n and_o what_o be_v more_o disagree_v from_o it_o them_z lucifer-like_a presumption_n and_o yet_o even_o again_o i_o say_v it_o be_v the_o more_o pitiful_a by_o how_o much_o it_o cross_v even_o their_o own_o opinion_n &_o practice_n for_o how_o can_v that_o conceit_n of_o they_o touch_v merit_n before_o christ_n and_o special_o of_o merit_v eternal_a life_n stand_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v see_v that_o merit_n or_o absolute_a obedience_n special_o if_o man_n deal_v with_o one_o that_o be_v just_a as_o christ_n who_o be_v justice_n itself_o must_v needs_o shut_v out_o doubt_v touch_v that_o we_o be_v sure_o we_o have_v deserve_v and_o he_o can_v choose_v but_o of_o justice_n give_v and_o grant_v but_o such_o vain_a fantesy_n must_v they_o fall_v into_o that_o fall_v away_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n and_o will_v lift_v up_o themselves_o against_o christ_n our_o saviour_n that_o so_o refuse_v grace_n offer_v and_o feel_v it_o where_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v they_o may_v vanish_v away_o through_o the_o disquietness_n of_o their_o spirit_n in_o the_o vain_a imagination_n of_o their_o own_o mind_n concern_v the_o other_o it_o be_v very_o lamentable_a that_o in_o so_o large_a abundance_n of_o god_n gracious_a promise_n and_o in_o so_o faithful_a and_o continual_a performance_n of_o they_o special_o to_o his_o own_o people_n whereof_o not_o only_o the_o word_n but_o the_o world_n do_v yield_v we_o a_o infinite_a cloud_n of_o witness_n man_n mind_n shall_v yet_o be_v replenish_v with_o fearfulness_n and_o doubt_v but_o such_o and_o so_o great_a be_v satan_n malice_n against_o we_o and_o so_o dull_a and_o slow_a of_o heart_n be_v we_o to_o believe_v special_o we_o a_o world_n there_o be_v of_o relic_n &_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n in_o we_o which_o though_o they_o do_v not_o utter_o deface_v and_o put_v out_o the_o good_a work_n of_o god_n in_o we_o this_o life_n we_o can_v not_o attain_v to_o that_o fullness_n of_o faith_n which_o we_o great_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o and_o though_o through_o god_n goodness_n we_o have_v gain_v somewhat_o yet_o many_o time_n we_o find_v those_o grace_n so_o eclipse_v and_o darken_v in_o we_o that_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o but_o what_o mean_v we_o to_o travail_v in_o the_o strengthen_n of_o these_o point_n which_o in_o everye_o man_n mind_n and_o mouth_n almost_o be_v so_o clear_a and_o usual_a as_o nothing_o more_o the_o thing_n rather_o that_o we_o shall_v strive_v unto_o be_v this_o namely_o that_o sith_o by_o corrupt_a opinion_n we_o be_v or_o may_v be_v daily_o assault_v outward_o and_o by_o satan_n subtle_a suggestion_n and_o our_o own_o curse_a corruption_n we_o be_v continual_o provoke_v inward_o as_o to_o every_o other_o evil_n general_o so_o particular_o to_o this_o sore_a sickness_n of_o our_o soul_n distrust_n or_o doubt_v we_o shall_v in_o the_o holy_a wisdom_n &_o clear_a light_n of_o god_n word_n and_o also_o by_o the_o all_o sufficient_a strength_n and_o power_n of_o the_o bless_a spirit_n so_o labour_v to_o look_v unto_o ourselves_o as_o for_o the_o remove_n of_o doubt_v that_o he_o be_v assure_o persuade_v that_o god_n that_o have_v begin_v this_o work_n in_o they_o will_v make_v it_o perfect_a even_o until_o the_o day_n of_o jesus_n christ_n now_o what_o word_n be_v there_o in_o this_o text_n that_o will_v imply_v doubt_v if_o it_o be_v any_o it_o be_v fear_n and_o tremble_a but_o they_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v already_o import_v no_o such_o matter_n but_o rather_o signify_v reverence_n of_o god_n and_o a_o certain_a kind_n of_o childlike_a awe_n and_o loathsomnes_n to_o offend_v or_o displease_v so_o gracious_a a_o father_n as_o our_o heavenly_a father_n be_v i_o think_v we_o may_v well_o expound_v this_o place_n by_o a_o sentence_n of_o the_o prophet_n psal_n 2._o where_o he_o say_v serve_v the_o lord_n in_o fear_n he_o have_v in_o other_o place_n deliver_v and_o all_o come_n from_o one_o spirit_n and_o the_o same_o
election_n be_v approve_v to_o other_o and_o seal_v up_o in_o ourselves_o and_o since_o this_o be_v the_o only_a way_n into_o christ_n eternal_a kingdom_n of_o which_o he_o speak_v verse_n 11._o sure_o it_o will_v well_o beseem_v and_o become_v we_o to_o be_v whole_o carry_v this_o way_n unless_o we_o will_v be_v count_v either_o fearful_a contemner_n of_o grace_n and_o goodness_n or_o else_o take_v of_o they_o that_o be_v indeed_o godly_a and_o in_o some_o measure_n very_o well_o able_a to_o discern_v in_o both_o which_o respect_v peter_n no_o doubt_n of_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a man_n and_o in_o his_o law_n of_o which_o no_o doubt_n of_o it_o the_o apostle_n peter_n treat_v in_o this_o place_n we_o may_v as_o upon_o outward_a testimony_n fruit_n and_o effect_n certain_o conclude_v concern_v faith_n and_o by_o faith_n determine_v touch_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o and_o so_o by_o consequent_a also_o concern_v our_o call_n &_o election_n for_o which_o purpose_n see_v romans_z 5.9.14_o 1._o john_n 3_o 24._o and_o contrariwise_o also_o as_o appear_v mat._n 7.16.17_o etc._n etc._n indeed_o i_o confess_v that_o this_o proof_n and_o confirmation_n of_o the_o faithful_a people_n only_o have_v he_o so_o can_v be_v quiet_a in_o mind_n be_v in_o his_o own_o heart_n guilty_a of_o horrible_a sin_n as_o against_o god_n himself_o in_o heaven_n so_o against_o man_n upon_o earth_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v that_o a_o wicked_a person_n be_v either_o not_o at_o all_o quiet_a or_o else_o the_o grace_n that_o he_o will_v seem_v to_o not_o easy_o be_v bring_v to_o feeling_n that_o so_o sting_v either_o with_o the_o testimony_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n or_o with_o the_o greatness_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o judgement_n against_o they_o for_o sin_n or_o with_o this_o terrible_a and_o heavy_a threaten_n or_o with_o some_o one_o thing_n or_o other_o they_o may_v stoop_v &_o learn_v to_o be_v humble_v now_o what_o be_v this_o to_o doubt_v special_o in_o the_o faithful_a who_o john_n labour_v to_o raise_v up_o to_o a_o assure_a hope_n by_o their_o faith_n towards_o god_n and_o love_n to_o the_o saint_n or_o brethren_n or_o if_o you_o will_v to_o the_o wicked_a what_o be_v it_o to_o they_o who_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v so_o far_o from_o doubt_v that_o they_o almost_o fear_v no_o evil_n either_o here_o or_o else_o where_o but_o as_o if_o it_o be_v be_v in_o a_o letargie_n or_o dead_a sleep_n or_o senslesnes_n pass_v three_o day_n without_o fear_n yea_o without_o conscience_n but_o if_o this_o either_o do_v not_o please_v or_o satisfy_v we_o may_v say_v further_o that_o he_o speak_v here_o of_o a_o set_a purpose_n that_o man_n have_v to_o do_v evil_a or_o to_o sin_n as_o we_o say_v against_o conscience_n he_o meaning_n that_o such_o manner_n of_o person_n so_o long_o as_o they_o continue_v in_o that_o persuasion_n and_o practice_v also_o that_o they_o can_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o determine_v touch_v the_o certainty_n of_o our_o salvation_n by_o the_o testimony_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n because_o they_o have_v a_o sting_n within_o they_o that_o witness_v the_o contrary_a for_o this_o we_o must_v know_v that_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n be_v unseperable_a companion_n and_o go_v as_o it_o be_v arm_n in_o arm_n together_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v 1._o tim._n 1.19_o yea_o and_o that_o the_o fruit_n accompany_v they_o be_v never_o utter_o sunder_v from_o they_o but_o at_o some_o one_o time_n or_o another_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o their_o measure_n where_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n have_v boldness_n towards_o god_n and_o be_v well_o certify_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o their_o own_o salvation_n thereby_o and_o that_o this_o in_o his_o meaning_n indeed_o it_o may_v appear_v by_o sundry_a word_n before_o go_v as_o when_o he_o say_v by_o this_o that_o be_v true_a and_o sincere_a love_n to_o our_o brethren_n we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v belong_v unto_o god_n who_o he_o signify_v also_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v when_o be_v say_v and_o shall_v before_o he_o assure_v our_o heart_n which_o assurance_n bring_v with_o it_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n can_v but_o shut_v out_o and_o kill_v as_o it_o be_v all_o doubt_v and_o again_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v when_o he_o say_v hereby_o we_o know_v that_o he_o abide_v in_o we_o even_o by_o the_o spirit_n which_o he_o have_v give_v us._n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v see_v that_o this_o place_n weaken_v our_o adversary_n doctrine_n rather_o than_o that_o it_o do_v any_o manner_n of_o way_n confirm_v &_o strengthen_v it_o but_o if_o they_o will_v further_o urge_v it_o as_o some_o of_o they_o do_v and_o say_v there_o be_v no_o man_n but_o he_o be_v accuse_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o therefore_o no_o man_n can_v have_v confidence_n or_o boldness_n before_o god_n we_o tell_v they_o first_o that_o the_o argument_n follow_v not_o for_o though_o the_o antecedent_n be_v true_a that_o every_o good_a man_n especial_o be_v sting_v more_o or_o less_o yet_o the_o consequent_a be_v not_o good_a because_o thouhh_v it_o be_v true_a that_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o sin_n and_o unworthines_n thereby_o he_o can_v have_v little_a or_o no_o assurance_n yet_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n his_o word_n his_o spirit_n christ_n absolute_a obedience_n etc._n etc._n he_o may_v have_v hope_n and_o boldness_n second_o we_o say_v that_o it_o be_v no_o good_a or_o sound_a reason_n to_o reason_n from_o the_o fact_n of_o man_n to_o or_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n for_o man_n fact_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v evil_a and_o unlawful_a whereas_o all_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n be_v true_a and_o holy_a even_o as_o he_o himself_o &_o though_o man_n either_o in_o practice_n or_o persuasion_n will_v condemn_v he_o or_o they_o yet_o shall_v he_o be_v just_a when_o he_o speak_v and_o pute_v when_o he_o judge_v fact_n express_v or_o show_v thing_n do_v but_o never_o declare_v much_o less_o prove_v the_o lawefulnes_n of_o the_o thing_n practise_v beside_o though_o we_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o even_o the_o faithful_a be_v not_o only_o convince_v but_o condemn_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o persuasion_n when_o they_o consider_v their_o unworthiness_n yet_o fear_v we_o not_o also_o to_o affirm_v that_o even_o then_o they_o be_v absolve_v and_o clear_v also_o for_o so_o often_o as_o they_o look_v unto_o themselves_o and_o sin_n they_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v prick_v and_o terrify_v because_o sin_v see_v and_o feel_v indeed_o can_v bring_v forth_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o itself_o no_o better_a be_v cunning_a to_o devise_v and_o his_o brain_n busy_o beat_v upon_o vanity_n &_o lie_v even_o to_o uphold_v the_o same_o what_o he_o can_v for_o our_o own_o part_n we_o will_v deal_v no_o their_o purpose_n because_o remission_n of_o sin_n &_o the_o comfort_n follow_v thereupon_o against_o the_o doubtfulness_n of_o our_o heart_n stand_v not_o in_o know_v or_o feel_v all_o and_o every_o particular_a or_o special_a sin_n that_o man_n have_v commit_v but_o in_o the_o lively_a apprehension_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n declare_v in_o the_o heavenly_a promise_n of_o his_o word_n not_o impute_v unto_o we_o our_o transgression_n nay_o which_o be_v more_o impute_v unto_o we_o through_o faith_n that_o take_v hold_v thereof_o the_o innocency_n holiness_n &_o obedience_n just_a etc._n etc._n do_v not_o evacuate_v or_o overthrow_v the_o wisdom_n justice_n etc._n etc._n that_o from_o that_o infinite_a fountain_n that_o be_v in_o he_o be_v convey_v over_o unto_o man_n special_o his_o child_n so_o that_o he_o alone_o know_v man_n heart_n hinder_v not_o this_o but_o that_o other_o man_n may_v know_v though_o not_o other_o man_n yet_o their_o own_o heart_n reasonable_a well_o for_o this_o of_o search_v the_o heart_n be_v as_o also_o the_o former_a above_o name_v be_v of_o that_o sort_n of_o attribute_n in_o or_o to_o god_n which_o though_o they_o be_v in_o he_o in_o all_o absolute_a fullness_n and_o without_o measure_n yet_o be_v they_o communicate_v to_o the_o godly_a especial_o and_o that_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o he_o see_v to_o be_v fit_a for_o they_o and_o yet_o he_o have_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o in_o himself_o and_o this_o be_v that_o in_o some_o sort_n and_o sense_n which_o solomon_n say_v in_o the_o proverbe_n the_o thought_n of_o man_n heart_n be_v as_o deep_a fountain_n but_o a_o man_n of_o understanding_n will_v draw_v they_o dry_a but_o more_o plain_o and_o particular_o the_o apostle_n say_v no_o man_n know_v the_o thing_n of_o a_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n which_o be_v within_o himself_o but_o god_n spirit_n make_v the_o spiritual_a man_n able_a to_o judge_v and_o discern_v all_o thing_n yet_o he_o himself_o to_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o mayor_n proposition_n be_v not_o simple_a here_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v understand_v with_o a_o condition_n or_o exception_n thus_o he_o that_o alone_o be_v the_o knower_n of_o the_o heart_n yea_o of_o all_o thing_n he_o only_o be_v assure_v or_o certain_o know_v our_o salvation_n unless_o it_o have_v please_v he_o in_o his_o word_n to_o reveal_v something_o concern_v that_o unto_o we_o and_o will_v have_v we_o thereby_o to_o be_v assure_v thereof_o for_o then_o have_v communicate_v that_o knowledge_n which_o in_o himself_o be_v
god_n and_o be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o appoint_v indeed_o among_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n notwithstanding_o the_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o it_o which_o be_v from_o ourselves_o &_o not_o from_o god_n or_o his_o work_n in_o we_o and_o therefore_o may_v indeed_o comfort_v we_o for_o as_o this_o be_v a_o sure_a rule_n that_o whatsoever_o be_v of_o or_o how_o great_a or_o how_o much_o our_o repentance_n shall_v be_v but_o rather_o the_o thing_n itself_o in_o itself_o &_o the_o soundness_n of_o it_o exact_v or_o require_v so_o that_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v not_o the_o quantity_n of_o it_o as_o whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o great_a suffice_v but_o the_o soundness_n &_o truth_n of_o it_o suffice_v though_o not_o before_o god_n neither_o for_o there_o be_v want_n in_o we_o &_o our_o good_a work_n that_o way_n yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o assurance_n for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o our_o purpose_n or_o before_o god_n yet_o it_o may_v suffice_v for_o another_o and_z as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o for_o even_o as_o not_o the_o quantity_n so_o much_o as_o the_o quality_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o steadfastness_n of_o it_o be_v it_o that_o in_o some_o sort_n commend_v we_o to_o god_n but_o special_o minister_v much_o comfort_n to_o our_o own_o conscience_n and_o as_o not_o long_o and_o many_o prayer_n but_o short_a and_o sweet_a as_o we_o may_v say_v yea_o so_o do_v we_o say_v and_o believe_v also_o touch_v all_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o namely_o our_o repentance_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v for_o this_o point_n 8_o their_a eight_o argument_n they_o make_v thus_o pride_n be_v a_o vice_n displease_v god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n humility_n and_o modesty_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n and_o be_v assure_v of_o eternal_a salvation_n be_v a_o point_n of_o arrogancy_n as_o again_o to_o doubt_v whether_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n a_o token_n of_o modesty_n and_o humility_n therefore_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v say_v nothing_o to_o it_o but_o willing_o yield_v and_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o the_o truth_n thereof_o but_o the_o minor_a be_v corrupt_a and_o false_a and_o therefore_o we_o deny_v it_o in_o both_o the_o part_n or_o proposition_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o arrogancy_n to_o be_v assure_v general_o of_o god_n favour_n for_o all_o mercy_n and_o particular_o of_o his_o grace_n concern_v eternal_a salvation_n since_o god_n himself_o for_o the_o better_a uphold_v of_o our_o heart_n and_o hope_n that_o way_n have_v be_v please_v to_o give_v unto_o we_o many_o gracious_a both_o prop_n and_o promise_n in_o his_o word_n which_o also_o in_o good_a time_n he_o will_v perform_v unto_o we_o as_o he_o have_v do_v to_o many_o of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n who_o have_v go_v before_o we_o that_o which_o we_o have_v not_o and_o yet_o deceive_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n imagine_v we_o have_v it_o or_o else_o have_v it_o to_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o have_v more_o than_o we_o enjoy_v or_o else_o enjoy_v it_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o it_o either_o as_o though_o we_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o or_o as_o though_o god_n have_v give_v it_o we_o to_o that_o end_n to_o make_v we_o swell_v over_o other_o but_o to_o assure_v ourselves_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o god_n have_v deliver_v in_o his_o word_n for_o the_o good_a and_o stay_n of_o his_o own_o people_n as_o we_o have_v already_o hear_v heretofore_o and_o shall_v again_o hereafter_o hear_v it_o prove_v more_o at_o large_a and_o therefore_o we_o can_v not_o arrogate_v or_o take_v any_o more_o unto_o ourselves_o then_o that_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n belong_v unto_o we_o and_o presume_v here_o we_o can_v or_o be_v proud_a whether_o we_o have_v it_o or_o have_v not_o for_o it_o be_v madness_n to_o be_v lift_v up_o with_o that_o we_o have_v not_o and_o since_o we_o have_v it_o not_o of_o ourselves_o but_o from_o another_o we_o may_v say_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o that_o ihou_fw-mi have_v not_o receive_v &_o if_o thou_o have_v receive_v it_o why_o reioyc_a thou_o as_o though_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o again_o we_o know_v god_n give_v no_o grace_n to_o any_o evil_a end_n howesoever_o man_n in_o his_o own_o corruption_n and_o satan_n in_o his_o malice_n against_o he_o abuse_v they_o many_o time_n thereto_o but_o as_o the_o grace_n themselves_o be_v good_a so_o both_o he_o in_o his_o purpose_n do_v and_o we_o in_o our_o practice_n ought_v to_o aim_v at_o good_a end_n and_o effect_n that_o so_o the_o one_o answer_v the_o other_o he_o may_v have_v glory_n other_o man_n good_a and_o ourselves_o comfort_n on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n to_o doubt_v of_o god_n favour_n but_o distrustfulnes_n or_o doubt_v rather_o for_o humility_n respect_v not_o god_n or_o not_o reach_v unto_o he_o though_o it_o be_v acceptable_a in_o his_o eye_n as_o other_o good_a thing_n be_v but_o concern_v man_n who_o when_o he_o consider_v either_o himself_o his_o sin_n and_o misery_n thereby_o or_o else_o god_n in_o his_o majesty_n might_n justice_n etc._n etc._n as_o a_o sharp_a revenger_n of_o the_o same_o have_v just_a occasion_n to_o be_v throw_v down_o be_v a_o holy_a &_o bless_a virgin_n whereas_o distrustfulness_n or_o doubt_v arise_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o a_o imagination_n touch_v the_o height_n or_o heinousnes_n of_o our_o iniquity_n or_o ignorance_n of_o god_n divine_a nature_n and_o holy_a word_n as_o though_o he_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o forgive_v we_o be_v a_o foul_a vice_n because_o it_o dishonour_v god_n in_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o add_v affliction_n unto_o a_o fearful_a and_o distress_a soul_n and_o both_o these_o point_v i_o think_v we_o may_v see_v plain_a by_o and_o earthly_a comparison_n for_o as_o when_o a_o great_a prince_n or_o person_n that_o both_o have_v largeness_n of_o power_n and_o soundness_n of_o good_a will_n shall_v promise_v we_o much_o and_o will_v we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o a_o prince_n to_o assure_v ourselves_o and_o be_v bold_a then_o to_o doubt_n be_v folly_n in_o ourselves_o and_o discredit_v to_o the_o person_n that_o offer_v &_o will_v perform_v such_o singular_a favour_n so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o behalf_n between_o we_o and_o god_n who_o power_n we_o can_v doubt_v of_o not_o only_o because_o it_o be_v absolute_a and_o infinite_a but_o also_o because_o he_o have_v effectual_o in_o all_o age_n and_o to_o every_o person_n perform_v whatsoever_o he_o have_v faithful_o promise_v and_o who_o good_a will_v we_o may_v not_o call_v into_o question_n he_o have_v give_v we_o so_o many_o assurance_n thereof_o as_o his_o sweet_a promise_n the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n the_o pledge_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o many_o particular_a grace_n both_o outward_a and_o inward_a as_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o bestow_v upon_o us._n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v it_o be_v not_o pride_n but_o christian_a humility_n not_o only_o to_o think_v or_o speak_v low_o of_o but_o as_o it_o be_v to_o distrust_v yea_o
condemn_v our_o own_o deed_n and_o work_n and_o renounce_v they_o utter_o to_o rest_n and_o stay_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n promise_v unto_o we_o for_o christ_n our_o saviour_n his_o sake_n and_o always_o both_o in_o mind_n and_o mouth_n to_o have_v that_o worthy_a say_n of_o the_o prophet_n rise_v with_o we_o enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n o_o lord_n for_o then_o no_o flesh_n shall_v be_v righteouse_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o just_a or_o justify_v for_o all_o that_o one_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n as_o they_o suppose_v but_o arrogancy_n and_o indeed_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o heavenly_a promise_n not_o to_o give_v credit_n to_o or_o not_o to_o believe_v these_o sweet_a promise_n and_o therefore_o saint_n john_n say_v he_o that_o believe_v not_o god_n have_v make_v he_o a_o liar_n 1._o john_n 5.10_o and_o we_o may_v see_v a_o memorable_a example_n of_o it_o in_o ahaz_n isaiah_n 7._o who_o refuse_v a_o sign_n give_v unto_o he_o from_o god_n but_o they_o press_v this_o further_a &_o say_v it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o humility_n to_o acknowledge_v our_o infirmity_n and_o sin_n and_o who_o will_v deny_v that_o that_o have_v any_o fault_n or_o savour_n in_o he_o of_o godliness_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n who_o know_v not_o that_o humility_n and_o doubt_v differ_v as_o much_o as_o vice_n &_o virtue_n or_o what_o man_n unless_o he_o be_v mad_a not_o only_o without_o reason_n but_o against_o godliness_n will_v suppose_v that_o our_o true_a humility_n shall_v destroy_v confidence_n boldness_n or_o faith_n concern_v god_n grace_n forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n since_o our_o humility_n be_v as_o other_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o faith_n if_o man_n do_v sound_o understand_v what_o humility_n be_v they_o will_v doubtless_o this_o take_v away_o a_o sick_a man_n sickness_n that_o he_o lay_v it_o open_a to_o the_o physician_n and_o require_v medicine_n no_o very_o but_o rather_o argue_v poverty_n weakness_n sickness_n
