you_o meet_v with_o alice_n add_v to_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a both_o when_o patience_n be_v pray_v for_o as_o 1_o col._n and_o exhort_v unto_o as_o 2_o tim._n 4._o 2._o but_o though_o this_o universality_n be_v to_o be_v pray_v for_o and_o exhort_v unto_o as_o that_o which_o make_v it_o perfect_a yet_o it_o be_v well_o if_o in_o the_o great_a trial_n of_o our_o life_n we_o come_v off_o with_o some_o patience_n suitable_a and_o from_o henceforth_o resolve_v with_o endurance_n so_o to_o do_v and_o so_o much_o be_v expect_v and_o it_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o many_o that_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o bear_v great_a trial_n between_o god_n and_o they_o with_o much_o quietness_n and_o submission_n be_v yet_o easy_o disadvantage_v upon_o small_a occasion_n between_o man_n and_o they_o for_o which_o some_o reason_n may_v be_v give_v four_o section_n although_o i_o have_v dispatch_v the_o subject_n i_o first_o intend_v yet_o i_o find_v myself_o oblige_v to_o proceed_v a_o little_a further_o in_o the_o open_n the_o five_o verse_n in_o order_n unto_o a_o relieve_n against_o a_o great_a discouragement_n which_o i_o know_v have_v or_o may_v have_v be_v in_o many_o reader_n heart_n whilst_o i_o have_v be_v thus_o discourse_v these_o great_a thing_n about_o the_o perfect_a work_n of_o patience_n etc._n etc._n and_o also_o to_o leave_v behind_o i_o the_o most_o apposite_a direction_n how_o to_o obtain_v this_o patience_n in_o the_o perfect_a work_n of_o it_o and_o i_o will_v not_o go_v out_o of_o my_o text_n for_o these_o thing_n neither_o a_o exposition_n of_o the_o 5._o verse_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v of_o god_n that_o give_v to_o all_o man_n liberal_o and_o upbraid_v not_o and_o it_o shall_v be_v give_v he_o §_o the_o discouragement_n i_o know_v be_v oh_o how_o remote_a be_v and_o have_v our_o heart_n be_v from_o this_o perfect_a work_n of_o patience_n which_o yet_o some_o saint_n have_v in_o so_o great_a a_o measure_n attain_v as_o those_o great_a example_n give_v have_v show_v both_o of_o saint_n out_o of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n what_o then_o shall_v i_o think_v of_o myself_o for_o the_o present_a will_n such_o a_o soul_n say_v or_o for_o the_o future_a what_o shall_v i_o do_v why_o true_o god_n have_v provide_v sufficient_o in_o the_o text_n for_o answer_n to_o these_o query_n and_o complaint_n of_o you_o whereby_o both_o to_o relieve_v you_o against_o your_o discouragement_n at_o your_o want_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o also_o to_o direct_v you_o to_o the_o most_o proper_a and_o effectual_a if_o not_o the_o only_a mean_v to_o obtain_v they_o 1._o as_o to_o this_o present_a discouragement_n about_o your_o want_n and_o so_o great_a fall_a short_a of_o this_o hitherto_o which_o you_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o those_o first_o word_n in_o the_o text_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v wisdom_n will_n be_v find_v great_o speak_v to_o your_o relief_n
regenerate_v and_o suppose_v in_o the_o faith_n §_o the_o three_o thing_n propose_v be_v how_o it_o can_v be_v he_o shall_v speak_v in_o this_o manner_n of_o believer_n that_o they_o shall_v lack_v when_o he_o or_o they_o have_v want_v the_o exercise_n of_o it_o for_o though_o christian_n do_v receive_v the_o principle_n of_o all_o grace_n as_o 2_o pet._n 1._o 3._o yet_o they_o may_v neglect_v to_o stir_v up_o all_o grace_n or_o may_v have_v be_v disuse_v to_o the_o exercise_n of_o some_o why_o else_o and_o to_o what_o end_n do_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o place_n stir_v they_o up_o to_o add_v grace_n to_o grace_n as_o in_o verse_n 5._o and_o in_o those_o case_n a_o christian_a may_v be_v say_v yea_o charge_v to_o lack_v that_o grace_n or_o grace_n which_o he_o want_v the_o exercise_n of_o for_o so_o in_o the_o same_o chapter_n ver_fw-la 9_o speak_v of_o a_o dozed_a negligent_a professor_n though_o true_a he_o use_v this_o very_a language_n of_o he_o he_o that_o lack_v these_o thing_n as_o i_o have_v elsewhere_o open_v that_o scripture_n for_o idem_fw-la est_fw-la non_fw-la esse_fw-la et_fw-la non_fw-la uti_fw-la it_o be_v all_o one_o for_o a_o thing_n not_o to_o be_v and_o not_o to_o be_v use_v when_o the_o be_v of_o a_o thing_n be_v whole_o ordain_v for_o use_n and_o operation_n now_o such_o a_o thing_n be_v grace_n and_o such_o a_o thing_n if_o not_o use_v be_v as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o and_o the_o opposition_n that_o be_v between_o add_v grace_n to_o grace_n v_o 5._o that_o be_v the_o exercise_n of_o one_o grace_n after_o another_o &_o the_o lack_v grace_n in_o that_o v_o 9_o evident_o show_v that_o phrase_n to_o be_v so_o understand_v not_o of_o the_o utter_a want_n of_o the_o grace_n but_o of_o the_o exercise_n §_o the_o four_o thing_n be_v the_o intimate_a reason_n or_o occasion_n whereupon_o the_o apostle_n do_v utter_v himself_o in_o such_o a_o supposition_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v this_o will_v appear_v by_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o in_o respect_n that_o the_o have_v locum_fw-la exhort_v to_o so_o hard_a and_o difficult_a a_o practice_n to_o count_n it_o all_o joy_n etc._n etc._n which_o require_v such_o high_a principle_n to_o be_v drink_v in_o about_o the_o good_a and_o benefit_n of_o tentation_n in_o the_o issue_n and_o end_n of_o they_o which_o principle_n must_v also_o have_v be_v thorough_o concoct_v in_o their_o heart_n first_o who_o shall_v attain_v to_o this_o and_o second_o there_o be_v many_o poor_a soul_n as_o of_o such_o that_o be_v weak_a and_o some_o new_a convert_v among_o they_o who_o he_o write_v to_o who_o may_v and_o do_v then_o as_o many_o nowadays_o that_o yet_o be_v sincere-hearted_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o their_o own_o weakness_n find_v and_o apprehend_v themselves_o so_o far_o off_o and_o remote_a from_o such_o high_a principle_n and_o attainment_n and_o therefore_o upon_o his_o thus_o discourse_v be_v like_a to_o be_v utter_o discourage_v think_v with_o themselves_o judge_v themselves_o by_o the_o present_a frame_n of_o their_o infirm_a spirit_n both_o that_o their_o heart_n have_v never_o yet_o nor_o will_v ever_o be_v wrought_v up_o to_o this_o pitch_n what_o to_o count_v it_o all_o joy_n think_v they_o be_v that_o it_o you_o exhort_v we_o unto_o alas_o our_o heart_n tremble_v at_o the_o very_a thought_n of_o enter_v into_o such_o sudden_a and_o so_o great_a tentation_n as_o you_o here_o forewarn_v we_o of_o and_o of_o all_o grace_n else_o it_o be_v this_o of_o a_o patient_a suffer_a frame_n and_o strength_n of_o â—_o spirit_n thereto_o that_o be_v and_o have_v be_v our_o want_n this_o be_v it_o we_o lack_v nor_o do_v we_o know_v how_o to_o manage_v ourselves_o wise_o under_o such_o trial_n so_o as_o to_o glorify_v god_n yea_o and_o not_o shameful_o to_o dishonour_v he_o nay_o if_o we_o shall_v fall_v into_o such_o trial_n and_o suffering_n we_o be_v like_a utter_o to_o fall_v away_o under_o they_o rather_o than_o to_o rejoice_v when_o we_o fall_v into_o they_o further_o three_o there_o may_v be_v many_o strong_a christian_n as_o to_o the_o active_a part_n of_o the_o life_n of_o christianity_n who_o yet_o may_v be_v to_o seek_v as_o fresh_a soldier_n at_o the_o first_o when_o such_o trial_n come_v unexpected_o and_o thick_a and_o threefold_a upon_o they_o and_o that_o they_o fall_v into_o they_o as_o downfalls_a and_o precipice_n and_o in_o this_o dreadful_a a_o manner_n he_o have_v set_v they_o out_o to_o they_o as_o impendent_a on_o they_o as_o be_v open_v and_o even_o such_o christian_n be_v surprise_v may_v be_v at_o a_o loss_n at_o first_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o confidence_n of_o spirit_n to_o bear_v they_o till_o by_o prayer_n and_o faith_n recollect_v themselves_o they_o shall_v anew_o obtain_v or_o regain_v this_o wisdom_n even_o strong_a christian_n be_v apt_a to_o be_v astound_v at_o first_o as_o man_n be_v with_o a_o greatblow_n and_o can_v well_o stand_v or_o keep_v their_o ground_n now_o unto_o such_o either_o of_o these_o do_v the_o apostle_n in_o this_o language_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v apply_v himself_o and_o therein_o speak_v to_o their_o very_a heart_n but_o especial_o to_o the_o first_o sort_n of_o weak_a christian_n and_o indeed_o speak_v their_o very_a fear_n and_o most_o inward_a thought_n and_o apprehension_n they_o have_v or_o may_v have_v of_o themselves_o and_o so_o utter_v their_o misgiving_n of_o heart_n in_o their_o own_o language_n oh_o i_o lack_v these_o thing_n say_v the_o soul_n if_o any_o of_o you_o lack_v say_v the_o apostle_n and_o it_o be_v no_o small_a comfort_n to_o such_o to_o hear_v a_o apostle_n from_o the_o immediate_a inspiration_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o suppose_v that_o very_o true_a and_o sincere_a christian_n may_v thus_o be_v lack_v and_o thus_o surprise_v thus_o as_o to_o the_o removal_n of_o their_o main_a discouragement_n which_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n propose_v ii_o the_o direction_n let_v he_o ask_v of_o god_n have_v thus_o speak_v their_o heart_n as_o to_o the_o fear_n &_o apprehension_n of_o themselves_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o fall_a short_a of_o this_o high_a duty_n of_o joy_n and_o patience_n etc._n etc._n he_o now_o direct_v they_o to_o the_o most_o proper_a and_o sovereign_a mean_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o it_o of_o all_o other_o and_o that_o be_v faithful_a instant_a prayer_n let_v he_o ask_v of_o god_n etc._n etc._n and_o herein_o also_o he_o speak_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o true_a christian_n also_o even_o of_o the_o weak_a who_o refuge_n in_o all_o their_o want_n be_v to_o cry_v to_o god_n for_o a_o supply_n of_o what_o they_o lack_v especial_o when_o they_o feel_v or_o be_v apprehensive_a of_o their_o lack_n and_o want_v in_o any_o grace_n that_o shall_v help_v they_o in_o time_n of_o need_n and_o look_v what_o effectual_a supply_n of_o this_o grace_n in_o tentation_n all_o the_o apostle_n persuasion_n alone_o will_v not_o have_v effect_v that_o faith_n vent_v itself_o in_o constant_a and_o fervent_a prayer_n will_v bring_v in_o and_o obtain_v and_o their_o heart_n will_v in_o the_o end_n be_v raise_v and_o wrought_v up_o unto_o so_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o abound_v in_o this_o grace_n also_o weak_a faith_n when_o it_o can_v find_v in_o its_o heart_n to_o suffer_v or_o so_o much_o as_o to_o enter_v into_o trial_n can_v yet_o pray_v and_o so_o do_v beg_v with_o desire_n unutterable_a to_o have_v this_o grace_n to_o be_v able_a to_o suffer_v these_o trial_n in_o this_o joyful_a manner_n as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v unto_o and_o the_o weak_a heart_n continue_v so_o to_o pray_v and_o importune_v god_n in_o the_o end_n this_o shall_v be_v give_v he_o as_o here_o he_o promise_v i_o shall_v not_o enlarge_v on_o this_o further_o for_o when_o a_o apostle_n shall_v single_a forth_o a_o mean_n and_o that_o one_o single_a one_o whereby_o to_o obtain_v any_o eminent_a grace_n one_o needs_o that_o mean_v aught_o to_o be_v with_o all_o diligence_n put_v into_o use_n and_o practice_n and_o so_o there_o need_v no_o more_o to_o urge_v it_o only_o observe_v how_o in_o this_o directive_n part_n he_o put_v they_o not_o upon_o pray_v chief_o to_o have_v tentation_n and_o trial_n avert_v or_o keep_v of_o nor_o to_o ask_v deliverance_n out_o of_o they_o though_o that_o be_v lawful_a and_o may_v be_v
