they_o know_v of_o god_n before_o a_o kill_a letter_n a_o ministration_n of_o death_n and_o condemnation_n and_o deserve_v to_o be_v abrogate_a and_o disannul_v if_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v a_o better_a clear_a more_o gracious_a and_o save_a and_o yet_o it_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v conclude_v hence_o that_o it_o be_v true_o either_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n or_o in_o the_o intention_n objection_n that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o there_o describe_v but_o there_o commend_v to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n as_o a_o part_n at_o least_o if_o not_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o the_o dispensation_n by_o moses_n and_o it_o be_v give_v with_o as_o great_a authority_n and_o have_v as_o solemn_a a_o sanction_n upon_o it_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n for_o in_o gospel-principle_n the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v love_n and_o we_o love_v he_o because_o he_o love_v we_o first_o 1_o john_n 4.19_o which_o be_v gratitude_n shall_v we_o continue_v in_o sin_n because_o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n and_o that_o so_o grace_n may_v abound_v god_n forbid_v this_o be_v high_o disingenuons_a rom._n 6.1.15_o and_o in_o keep_v thy_o commandment_n there_o be_v great_a reward_n psal_n 19.11_o there_o be_v a_o sight_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o precept_n but_o pray_v observe_v that_o where_o nobleness_n and_o ingenuity_n be_v the_o only_a principle_n of_o action_n there_o be_v no_o necessity_n for_o any_o thing_n to_o be_v do_v at_o all_o for_o action_n of_o nobleness_n and_o ingenuity_n and_o gratitude_n come_v under_o no_o law_n but_o be_v leave_v free_a to_o the_o agent_n to_o do_v or_o not_o to_o do_v only_o that_o hereby_o as_o he_o do_v they_o or_o not_o the_o agent_n will_v discover_v whether_o he_o be_v of_o a_o unworthy_a spirit_n or_o no._n and_o thus_o these_o man_n have_v bring_v thing_n to_o a_o fair_a pass_n that_o god_n be_v to_o be_v serve_v under_o the_o gospel_n only_o upon_o courtesy_n so_o that_o any_o that_o will_v may_v slip_v their_o neck_n out_o of_o christ_n yoke_n and_o their_o back_n from_o under_o his_o burden_n or_o else_o they_o must_v acknowledge_v that_o man_n ought_v to_o serve_v god_n because_o there_o be_v a_o must_v upon_o it_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n as_o creature_n if_o we_o will_v not_o there_o be_v a_o hell_n to_o punish_v but_o to_o encourage_v you_o in_o it_o if_o you_o will_v there_o be_v a_o heaven_n to_o reward_v and_o what_o if_o a_o legal_a spirit_n go_v to_o work_v with_o these_o principle_n only_a as_o indeed_o i_o think_v he_o have_v no_o other_o and_o that_o he_o may_v have_v all_o these_o in_o a_o degree_n viz._n the_o sense_n of_o his_o obligation_n as_o a_o creature_n the_o fear_n of_o hell_n and_o some_o general_a hope_n of_o heaven_n i_o say_v what_o if_o he_o may_v have_v all_o these_o principle_n be_v they_o evertheless_o good_a or_o unsuitable_a to_o the_o gospel_n because_o he_o use_v they_o if_o he_o use_v they_o to_o good_a end_n or_o use_v they_o aright_o they_o will_v do_v he_o good_a as_o well_o as_o they_o do_v other_o good_a the_o reason_n why_o these_o do_v he_o no_o good_a be_v for_o that_o in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o same_o principle_n in_o the_o general_n which_o a_o good_a man_n may_v use_v a_o legallist_n have_v always_o these_o three_o gross_a defect_n that_o undo_v he_o legallist_n three_o ruine_v defect_n in_o the_o service_n of_o a_o legallist_n first_o though_o the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n in_o general_n as_o a_o place_n of_o happiness_n may_v somewhat_o quicken_v he_o in_o what_o he_o do_v yet_o he_o have_v no_o true_a notion_n or_o apprehension_n of_o heaven_n that_o the_o happiness_n of_o it_o consist_v chief_o in_o likeness_n to_o god_n in_o holiness_n which_o if_o it_o be_v his_o notion_n of_o heaven_n he_o can_v not_o find_v in_o his_o heart_n to_o desire_v it_o much_o less_o to_o endeavour_v after_o it_o the_o second_o gross_a defect_n be_v this_o all_o the_o endeavour_n that_o he_o make_v to_o please_v god_n in_o one_o thing_n or_o in_o another_o as_o i_o have_v instance_a in_o several_a way_n never_o reach_v to_o a_o thorough_a heart-work_n whereas_o that_o be_v the_o chief_a thing_n that_o god_n look_v after_o because_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n &_o the_o father_n of_o spirit_n and_o the_o lastthing_n be_v this_o that_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o slightiness_n &_o hypocrifie_n of_o a_o legal_a spirit_n the_o very_a rule_n that_o he_o proceed_v by_o in_o his_o expectation_n of_o his_o reward_n be_v that_o god_n be_v bind_v to_o give_v it_o he_o as_o have_v well_o deserve_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n now_o what_o though_o a_o legallist_n may_v make_v use_n of_o the_o same_o principle_n that_o a_o evangelical_n spirit_n do_v unsuccessful_o yet_o what_o shall_v hinder_v but_o the_o evangelical_n worshipper_n may_v use_v the_o same_o principle_n right_o and_o with_o acceptation_n from_o god_n may_v not_o a_o good_a thing_n be_v abuse_v or_o not_o right_o use_v and_o do_v this_o destroy_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o let_v we_o now_o a_o little_a examine_v the_o word_n mercenary_a because_o indeed_o it_o sound_v harsh_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o low_a principle_n for_o a_o christran_v to_o act_v towards_o god_n by_o and_o then_o we_o will_v see_v brief_o what_o other_o principle_n there_o be_v in_o conjunction_n with_o it_o in_o every_o true_a saint_n of_o god_n the_o word_n mercenary_a find_v so_o ill_o mere_o from_o the_o common_a usage_n of_o it_o not_o so_o much_o from_o the_o etymology_n or_o native_a signification_n the_o natural_a signification_n of_o it_o be_v when_o any_o one_o act_n for_o wage_n or_o for_o a_o reward_n the_o use_n of_o it_o be_v when_o a_o man_n that_o be_v engage_v to_o do_v courtify_v or_o at_o least_o stand_v not_o in_o any_o need_n to_o receive_v courtesy_n will_v yet_o do_v no_o good_a turn_n for_o any_o without_o a_o good_a reward_n in_o his_o hand_n or_o well_o assure_v to_o he_o nay_o perhaps_o will_v do_v any_o mischief_n if_o he_o may_v be_v well_o reward_v so_o that_o mercenariness_n be_v a_o vice_n always_o contrary_a to_o nobleness_n that_o be_v more_o free_a to_o do_v than_o receive_v courtesy_n and_o often_o contrary_a to_o justice_n but_o now_o this_o mercenariness_n especial_o as_o contrary_a to_o nobleness_n be_v a_o vice_n only_o or_o chief_o among_o equal_n and_o those_o that_o stand_v not_o in_o need_n of_o one_o another_o as_o for_o those_o that_o be_v far_o inferior_a it_o be_v pride_n with_o they_o to_o be_v unwilling_a to_o receive_v courresy_n or_o reward_n for_o wherefore_o be_v any_o advance_v in_o place_n but_o that_o they_o may_v do_v good_a to_o those_o that_o be_v below_o they_o it_o be_v no_o dishonour_n at_o all_o for_o a_o poor_a man_n that_o want_v bread_n to_o hire_v our_o his_o labour_n for_o a_o reward_n nor_o for_o a_o child_n that_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v what_o his_o facher_n command_v to_o be_v encourage_v by_o any_o reward_n that_o his_o father_n propose_v to_o any_o action_n now_o let_v we_o apply_v these_o thing_n to_o the_o business_n before_o we_o and_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o ill_o or_o how_o well_o mercenariness_n become_v we_o in_o our_o service_n of_o god_n first_o of_o all_o we_o be_v not_o here_o to_o consider_v the_o saint_n as_o do_v evil_a thing_n for_o a_o reward_n that_o be_v the_o worst_a mercenariness_n of_o all_o no_o but_o they_o serve_v god_n for_o a_o reward_n now_o wherein_o can_v the_o sordidness_n of_o this_o spirit_n lie_v be_v it_o that_o we_o need_v not_o to_o receive_v courtesy_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n or_o that_o we_o can_v endure_v to_o receive_v a_o courtesy_n which_o we_o know_v we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o requite_v such_o a_o struin_n of_o nobleness_n there_o be_v sometime_o find_v among_o man_n out_o if_o we_o shall_v aim_v at_o such_o a_o strain_n of_o nobleness_n with_o god_n how_o will_v such_o man_n ever_o offer_v to_o receive_v heaven_n especial_o when_o they_o do_v not_o work_v for_o it_o which_o make_v it_o far_o more_o oblige_v true_o in_o my_o mind_n it_o be_v very_o high_a pride_n for_o a_o poor_a creature_n that_o be_v poor_a and_o blind_a and_o naked_a and_o in_o want_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o when_o god_n offer_v to_o supply_v his_o poverty_n to_o cure_v his_o blindness_n to_o cover_v his_o nakedness_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v exceed_o overjoy_v at_o it_o and_o see_v that_o these_o supply_n be_v of_o this_o nature_n that_o they_o can_v be_v complete_o obtain_v till_o we_o come_v to_o heaven_n nor_o yet_o certain_o obtain_v except_o we_o persevere_v while_o we_o be_v here_o to_o labour_v after_o they_o it_o seem_v a_o strange_a wantonness_n to_o i_o that_o man_n shall_v not_o labour_v and_o own_o it_o that_o they_o do_v labour_n for_o they_o as_o the_o command_n be_v debt_n no_o fault_n in_o labour_v for_o the_o reward_n except_o it_o be_v for_o the_o reward_n of_o a_o debt_n labour_v for_o

of_o regular_a love_n be_v not_o of_o such_o a_o kind_a as_o this_o for_o he_o do_v not_o die_v for_o we_o to_o remain_v accurse_v but_o undergo_v the_o curse_n that_o so_o he_o may_v procure_v the_o good_a people_n may_v make_v much-like_a those_o in_o another_o case_n of_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n they_o will_v say_v if_o god_n be_v in_o hell_n his_o presence_n will_v make_v hell_n to_o be_v heaven_n and_o they_o have_v rather_o be_v in_o hell_n with_o god_n than_o in_o heaven_n without_o he_o people_n have_v better_o show_v their_o love_n to_o god_n and_o their_o humility_n in_o those_o action_n and_o duty_n which_o he_o call_v they_o unto_o then_o in_o such_o supposition_n and_o fantastical_a expression_n and_o imagination_n as_o these_o that_o be_v the_o three_o that_o we_o may_v obtain_v the_o prize_n that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v castaways_a i_o shall_v just_o give_v a_o brief_a account_n of_o the_o order_n of_o principle_n in_o a_o christian_n act_v for_o god_n as_o i_o apprehend_v they_o to_o lie_v and_o then_o show_v why_o this_o of_o mercenariness_n can_v be_v make_v a_o character_n of_o a_o legal_a spirie_n and_o then_o come_v to_o give_v some_o more_o true_a scripture-character_n first_o the_o order_n of_o principle_n in_o every_o saint_n heart_n in_o his_o act_n for_o god_n the_o 3._o first_o now_o i_o suppose_v that_o the_o order_n of_o principle_n in_o every_o saint_n heart_n be_v this_o 1._o he_o consider_v himself_o a_o creature_n and_o so_o bind_v to_o obey_v his_o creator_n and_o since_o god_n have_v always_o propose_v some_o reward_n to_o the_o keep_n and_o threaten_v to_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n therefore_o these_o three_o principle_n may_v go_v hand_n in_o hand_n together_o and_o these_o be_v the_o first_o principle_n that_o any_o be_v to_o begin_v with_o in_o serve_a god_n now_o i_o think_v there_o be_v no_o exceed_v in_o any_o one_o of_o these_o principle_n a_o man_n can_v be_v too_o sensible_a of_o his_o obligation_n as_o a_o creature_n to_o serve_v his_o creator_n a_o man_n can_v be_v too_o sensible_a of_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o reward_n nor_o of_o the_o danger_n of_o hell_n yet_o i_o think_v every_o christian_n have_v somewhat_o more_o to_o move_v he_o in_o his_o service_n to_o god_n then_o bare_o these_o three_o principle_n as_o for_o instance_n some_o such_o as_o i_o have_v name_v love_v to_o god_n gratitude_n yea_o many_o time_n nobleness_n of_o heart_n we_o love_v god_n say_v the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o the_o name_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n because_o he_o love_v we_o
