a_o letter_n from_o a_o freeholder_n of_o buckinghamshire_n to_o a_o friend_n in_o london_n concern_v the_o election_n of_o the_o knight_n of_o the_o say_a county_n sir_n i_o have_v receive_v you_o contain_v a_o very_a necessary_a and_o reasonable_a request_n whereunto_o i_o ready_o return_v you_o this_o plain_a and_o faithful_a account_n follow_v the_o writ_n be_v deliver_v to_o the_o under-sheriff_n the_o beginning_n of_o this_o instant_a august_n notice_n be_v give_v by_o proclamation_n throughout_o the_o whole_a county_n that_o the_o election_n for_o knight_n of_o the_o shire_n for_o the_o county_n of_o buck_n shall_v be_v the_o twenty_o of_o the_o say_a month_n at_o alisbury_n but_o notwithstanding_o this_o legal_a appointment_n the_o high_a sheriff_z a_o few_o day_n before_o the_o election_n send_v his_o order_n to_o all_o the_o bailiff_n of_o the_o several_a hundred_o to_o this_o purpose_n that_o for_o several_a weighty_a reason_n he_o thereunto_o move_v he_o intend_v to_o adjourn_v the_o court_n which_o be_v to_o be_v hold_v at_o alisbury_n on_o wednesday_n the_o twenty_o to_o be_v hold_v at_o buckingham_n on_o thursday_n the_o 21th_o at_o eight_o of_o the_o clock_n in_o the_o morning_n but_o the_o major_a part_n of_o the_o bailiff_n think_v it_o illegal_a that_o after_o proclamation_n make_v according_a to_o law_n the_o high_a sheriff_n shall_v order_v another_o time_n and_o place_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o give_v notice_n so_o that_o almost_o all_o the_o gentry_n and_o freeholder_n of_o the_o county_n meet_v at_o alisbury_n and_o at_o buckingham_n there_o be_v only_o the_o high_a sheriff_n sir_n timber_n t._n with_o a_o very_a small_a number_n of_o their_o faction_n and_o at_o night_n by_o order_n of_o the_o bailiff_n the_o drum_n be_v beat_v which_o get_v together_o about_o twenty_o or_o thirty_o boy_n that_o cry_v about_o the_o town_n a_o sir_n anthony_n c._n and_o a_o sir_n ralph_n v._o the_o latter_a of_o which_o have_v his_o name_n use_v without_o his_o consent_n or_o knowledge_n but_o mr._n wharton_n and_o mr._n hamden_n that_o stand_v for_o knight_n of_o the_o shire_n accompany_v with_o a_o very_a great_a number_n of_o horse_n come_v into_o alisbury_n upon_o the_o aforesaid_a wednesday_n about_o seven_o of_o the_o clock_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o be_v inform_v that_o the_o sheriff_n have_v be_v there_o before_o and_o have_v adjourn_v the_o court_n to_o be_v hold_v at_o buckingham_n the_o next_o morning_n by_o eight_o of_o the_o clock_n whereupon_o mr._n wharton_n and_o mr._n hamden_n with_o several_a gentleman_n late_o elect_v to_o serve_v in_o parliament_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o gentleman_n of_o the_o county_n attend_v his_o grace_n the_o duke_n of_o buckingham_n who_o be_v please_v to_o honour_v they_o with_o his_o presence_n at_o the_o election_n and_o there_o they_o debate_v what_o be_v then_o fit_a to_o be_v do_v and_o it_o be_v unanimous_o agree_v that_o though_o they_o must_v go_v to_o elect_a at_o buckingham_n they_o will_v neither_o lie_v there_o nor_o spend_v one_o penny_n in_o the_o place_n lest_o they_o shall_v be_v think_v to_o encourage_v a_o town_n that_o have_v so_o late_o make_v so_o bad_a a_o choice_n and_o likewise_o to_o show_v their_o resentment_n to_o that_o ill-bred_a carrier_n son_n the_o present_a sheriff_n for_o so_o high_a a_o affront_n to_o the_o whole_a county_n to_o make_v they_o go_v unnecessary_o twelve_o long_a mile_n across_o the_o county_n in_o a_o very_a rainy_a day_n the_o duke_n of_o buckingham_n be_v desire_v by_o the_o gentleman_n of_o the_o county_n to_o acquaint_v the_o freeholder_n with_o what_o they_o have_v resolve_v upon_o we_o be_v draw_v out_o into_o the_o field_n and_o there_o his_o grace_n acquaint_v we_o with_o their_o resolution_n and_o further_o desire_v that_o we_o will_v return_v into_o alisbury_n to_o refresh_v ourselves_o and_o be_v ready_a by_o two_o of_o the_o clock_n that_o we_o may_v go_v to_o winslow_n in_o one_o entire_a body_n a_o town_n within_o five_o mile_n of_o buckingham_n and_o promise_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v wagon_n provide_v for_o those_o that_o be_v on_o foot_n and_o unable_a to_o go_v so_o far_o and_o if_o the_o town_n of_o winslow_n be_v unable_a to_o receive_v they_o his_o grace_n and_o my_o lord_n paget_n and_o all_o the_o gentleman_n will_v keep_v together_o with_o they_o in_o the_o field_n all_o night_n resolve_v to_o fare_v all_o alike_o which_o be_v answer_v with_o great_a shout_n cry_v out_o one_o and_o all_z one_o and_o all_o be_v not_o only_o to_o buckingham_n but_o from_o hundred_o to_o hundred_o round_o the_o county_n nay_o be_v ●t_a to_o york_n rather_o than_o lose_v our_o former_a member_n that_o serve_v we_o faithful_o in_o the_o last_o parliament_n and_o then_o we_o return_v into_o alisbury_n to_o refresh_v ourselves_o and_o between_o two_o and_o three_o of_o the_o clock_n we_o march_v out_o with_o about_o four_o thousand_o horse_n with_o drum_n beat_v and_o trumpets_z sounding_z lead_v by_o his_o grace_n the_o duke_n of_o buckingham_n our_o foot_n and_o wagon_n be_v go_v before_o and_o in_o very_o good_a order_n and_o time_n we_o come_v to_o winslow_n and_o be_v well_o satisfy_v with_o the_o mean_a accommodation_n we_o meet_v with_o every_o man_n cheerful_o beat_v his_o own_o charge_n about_o five_o next_o morning_n his_o grace_n mount_v and_o in_o the_o same_o order_n we_o march_v towards_o buckingham_n and_o in_o the_o way_n there_o join_v to_o we_o two_o thousand_o horse_n more_o which_o come_v from_o several_a part_n of_o the_o county_n all_o cry_v out_o a_o wharton_z and_o a_o hamden_n and_o thus_o we_o continue_v march_v to_o the_o town_n of_o buckingham_n where_o those_o that_o be_v on_o foot_n and_o those_o that_o be_v in_o the_o wagon_n stand_v ready_a to_o join_v with_o we_o and_o thus_o we_o go_v through_o buckingham_n into_o a_o great_a field_n beyond_o the_o town_n cry_v out_o all_o the_o way_n no_o timber_n t._n no_o traitor_n son_n no_o pensioner_n no_o papist_n no_o betrayer_n of_o their_o country_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o we_o be_v come_v into_o the_o field_n the_o under-sheriff_n with_o mr._n wharton_n mr._n hamden_n accompany_v with_o several_a gentleman_n and_o freeholder_n return_v into_o buckingham_n and_o wait_v till_o eight_o of_o the_o clock_n expect_v the_o sheriff_n but_o he_o not_o come_v the_o under-sheriff_n adjourn_v the_o court_n into_o the_o field_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n his_o grace_n of_o buckingham_n and_o several_a other_o gentleman_n draw_v the_o horse_n up_o into_o several_a troop_n which_o pleaae_v the_o freeholder_n and_o we_o march_v in_o very_o good_a order_n to_o the_o top_n of_o the_o hill_n the_o under-sheriff_n be_v then_o return_v the_o writ_n be_v open_v and_o read_v and_o there_o we_o proceed_v to_o the_o election_n where_o mr._n wharton_n and_o mr._n hamden_n be_v choose_v without_o the_o least_o opposition_n and_o mr._n wharton_n and_o mr._n hamden_n be_v thereupon_o proclaim_v due_o elect_v knight_n of_o the_o shire_n for_o the_o county_n of_o buck_n but_o whilst_o the_o under-sheriff_n go_v to_o prepare_v their_o indenture_n the_o sheriff_n with_o sir_n timber_n t._n etc._n etc._n some_o of_o the_o clergy_n come_v into_o the_o town_n and_o the_o sheriff_n hear_v a_o parson_n cry_v out_o a_o wharton_z a_o hamden_n be_v so_o transport_v with_o zeal_n for_o the_o catholic_n cause_n that_o he_o ride_v up_o and_o strike_v he_o with_o his_o whip_n over_o the_o face_n the_o gentleman_n apprehend_v this_o high_a affront_n to_o be_v too_o great_a to_o be_v bear_v by_o a_o english_a spirit_n and_o one_o of_o his_o coat_n he_o cock_v his_o beaver_n clap_v spur_n to_o his_o horse_n ride_v up_o and_o smite_v the_o carrier_n son_n with_o so_o great_a a_o fury_n that_o in_o the_o rancounter_n the_o sheriff_n fall_v from_o his_o horse_n and_o have_v like_a to_o have_v break_v his_o neck_n although_o this_o may_v have_v be_v a_o sufficient_a warning_n to_o a_o wise_a man_n they_o have_v no_o soon_o get_v he_o into_o a_o house_n but_o he_o send_v his_o son_n to_o put_v a_o further_a affront_n upon_o the_o county_n the_o young_a man_n come_v into_o the_o field_n just_a as_o the_o indenture_n be_v sign_v and_o first_o he_o joy_v mr._n wharton_n of_o be_v elect_v and_o at_o the_o same_o instance_n demand_v a_o poll._n but_o be_v ask_v by_o the_o gentleman_n for_o who_o he_o demand_v it_o he_o scornful_o reply_v for_o who_o he_o please_v refuse_v to_o name_v any_o particular_a person_n but_o be_v rebuke_v by_o the_o gentleman_n say_v young_a man_n go_v home_o and_o learn_v your_o lesson_n better_o upon_o which_o we_o give_v a_o great_a shout_n and_o he_o poor_a lad_n ashamed_a of_o his_o folly_n ride_v away_o but_o several_a of_o the_o freeholder_n ride_v after_o he_o and_o whip_v he_o out_o of_o the_o field_n into_o the_o town_n although_o he_o deny_v to_o some_o and_o often_o ask_v pardon_n to_o other_o of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v the_o indenture_n be_v sign_v and_o seal_v we_o march_v back_o in_o good_a order_n through_o buckingham_n all_o cry_v out_o as_o before_o no_o timber_n t._n no_o traitor_n son_n no_o pensioner_n etc._n etc._n without_o make_v any_o stop_n or_o any_o manner_n of_o expense_n in_o the_o town_n part_v of_o our_o company_n go_v to_o winslow_n and_o the_o rest_n to_o alisbury_n to_o refresh_v ourselves_o and_o so_o every_o man_n to_o his_o own_o home_n thus_o sir_n i_o have_v give_v you_o a_o short_a and_o true_a account_n of_o our_o proceed_n and_o it_o be_v very_o pleasant_a to_o i_o to_o see_v six_o thousand_o horse_n in_o so_o small_a a_o county_n every_o man_n able_a to_o bear_v his_o own_o charge_n and_o i_o hope_v the_o nobility_n gentry_n and_o freeholder_n throughout_o the_o kingdom_n will_v be_v ready_a on_o all_o occasion_n to_o give_v the_o like_a encouragement_n and_o then_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o all_o the_o freeholder_n in_o england_n will_v be_v unite_v as_o one_o man_n against_o popery_n and_o arbitrary_a government_n and_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o these_o brave_a english_a spirit_n of_o buckinghamshire_n from_o alisbury_n august_n 23._o 1679._o finis_fw-la
