have_v we_o to_o search_v and_o try_v if_o we_o be_v not_o guilty_a in_o this_o particular_a and_o how_o far_o we_o may_v possible_o be_v guilty_a for_o though_o we_o have_v find_v out_o the_o very_a notion_n in_o which_o it_o must_v lie_v viz._n the_o opinion_n of_o merit_n yet_o this_o will_v not_o serve_v usual_o to_o find_v it_o out_o by_o for_o who_o of_o we_o do_v not_o renounce_v merit_n and_o yet_o who_o of_o we_o if_o the_o forego_n assertion_n be_v true_a be_v not_o addict_v to_o legality_n i_o shall_v come_v therefore_o to_o some_o other_o way_n of_o discovery_n of_o this_o evil_a distemper_n of_o heart_n some_o mark_n and_o sign_n of_o it_o some_o effect_n which_o discover_v their_o cause_n though_o never_o so_o occult_a and_o hide_a before_o and_o this_o be_v the_o three_o particular_a in_o the_o conviction_n which_o i_o promise_v the_o first_o be_v to_o discover_v that_o there_o be_v such_o man_n as_o seek_v justification_n by_o work_n the_o second_o be_v to_o discover_v wherein_o their_o legality_n lie_v and_o this_o three_o to_o discover_v by_o some_o sign_n where_o this_o legality_n be_v to_o be_v find_v either_o in_o a_o predominancy_n or_o in_o any_o less_o degree_n now_o for_o the_o discharge_n of_o this_o last_o part_n of_o my_o work_n in_o the_o conviction_n character_n the_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o conviction_n viz._n the_o character_n i_o shall_v first_o premise_v two_o thing_n and_o then_o come_v to_o the_o character_n the_o first_o be_v this_o that_o all_o man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v either_o profane_a and_o atheistical_a or_o else_o in_o some_o way_n or_o other_o religious_a as_o for_o those_o that_o be_v profane_a and_o atheistical_a i_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o they_o in_o this_o discourse_n for_o that_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o justification_n who_o make_v no_o pursuit_n after_o it_o at_o all_o the_o second_o observation_n that_o i_o will_v premise_v be_v this_o that_o as_o for_o the_o religious_a world_n those_o that_o treat_v with_o god_n after_o any_o sort_n for_o their_o salvation_n they_o be_v all_o reducible_a to_o one_o of_o these_o two_o sort_n they_o be_v either_o legal_a or_o evangelical_n in_o their_o service_n and_o obedience_n for_o there_o be_v but_o two_o way_n of_o justification_n either_o in_o the_o scripture_n or_o imaginable_a by_o we_o by_o unerring_a obedience_n and_o merit_v or_o by_o the_o way_n of_o mercy_n which_o accept_v a_o humble_a sincerity_n i_o say_v there_o be_v only_o these_o two_o way_n all_o that_o seek_v justification_n must_v be_v of_o one_o of_o these_o two_o way_n and_o hence_o i_o will_v infer_v that_o wherever_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n any_o two_o way_n of_o serve_v god_n that_o have_v follower_n and_o abettor_n be_v two_o opposite_a way_n whereof_o one_o be_v good_a and_o acceptable_a the_o other_o evil_a and_o displease_v to_o god_n there_o be_v these_o two_o way_n of_o legal_a and_o evangelical_n service_n and_o the_o character_n of_o the_o good_a way_n may_v be_v refer_v to_o the_o head_n of_o evangelical_n the_o character_n of_o the_o bad_a unto_o the_o head_n of_o legal_a worshipper_n or_o if_o we_o can_v make_v a_o clear_a reference_n of_o every_o miscarriage_n in_o religion_n unto_o legallity_n yet_o this_o i_o dare_v affirm_v and_o shall_v prove_v that_o the_o distinction_n of_o legal_a and_o evangelical_n worshipper_n or_o of_o such_o as_o be_v fleshly_a and_o such_o as_o be_v spiritual_a in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v very_o ancient_a nay_o as_o ancient_a as_o all_o antiquity_n so_o that_o throughout_o all_o age_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o in_o our_o own_o age_n in_o undeniable_a experience_n there_o may_v be_v trace_v these_o two_o sort_n of_o religious_a person_n and_o that_o by_o character_n that_o be_v visible_o legalor_n evangelical_n and_o whatever_o be_v the_o infinite_a perty_n difference_n of_o sect_n in_o any_o age_n or_o place_n yet_o all_o man_n profess_v religion_n may_v be_v reduce_v to_o these_o two_o class_n or_o sort_n of_o legal_a and_o evangelical_n worshipper_n and_o these_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v mind_v in_o they_o if_o you_o find_v that_o they_o be_v spiritual_a worshipper_n pass_v by_o their_o petty_a difference_n if_o they_o be_v fleshly_a be_v not_o deceive_v by_o that_o fair_a show_n which_o they_o make_v in_o the_o flesh_n for_o the_o antiquity_n and_o continual_a suceession_n of_o these_o two_o sort_n of_o worshipper_n and_o that_o as_o they_o include_v all_o sort_n of_o religious_a person_n see_v one_o scripture_n &_o then_o i_o come_v to_o the_o character_n it_o be_v in_o gal._n 4.29_o but_o as_o then_o that_o be_v in_o abraham_n time_n he_o of_o the_o one_o side_n that_o be_v bear_v after_o the_o flesh_n the_o son_n of_o the_o bondwoman_n hagar_n the_o son_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n perseâ—nted_v he_o on_o the_o other_o side_n that_o be_v bear_v after_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o true_a son_n of_o the_o promise_n the_o evangelical_n worshipper_n so_o it_o be_v now_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o beginning_n so_o it_o be_v and_o ever_o will_v be_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n two_o sort_n of_o worshipper_n which_o two_o sort_n all_o religious_a person_n may_v be_v refer_v unto_o if_o it_o be_v proper_a to_o enlarge_v upon_o this_o observation_n i_o can_v give_v declare_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v so_o many_o sad_a droop_a despond_v saint_n as_o there_o be_v that_o though_o they_o live_v holy_o and_o we_o can_v but_o think_v they_o be_v good_a man_n yet_o application_n mr_n baxter_n and_o other_o i_o think_v have_v do_v excellent_a service_n against_o the_o antinomian_o who_o have_v sad_o provoke_v they_o in_o these_o late_a time_n both_o in_o the_o pulpit_n and_o press_n and_o their_o private_a suggestion_n and_o insinuation_n but_o then_o they_o be_v more_o spare_v in_o use_v the_o two-edged_a sword_n of_o truth_n in_o this_o subject_a on_o that_o side_n where_o it_o shall_v cut_v the_o legalist_n whereas_o there_o be_v as_o much_o or_o more_o need_n to_o set_v themselves_o against_o they_o as_o against_o the_o antinomian_a if_o we_o will_v learn_v what_o legality_n be_v that_o we_o may_v avoid_v it_o we_o must_v go_v to_o the_o antinomian_o there_o be_v little_a to_o be_v hear_v of_o this_o subject_a among_o other_o though_o in_o
