into_o the_o ark_n which_o be_v god_n appoint_v instrument_n of_o that_o salvation_n so_o be_v it_o necessary_a for_o those_o that_o will_v escape_v the_o perdition_n of_o the_o ungodly_a and_o unbelieving_a world_n to_o be_v baptize_v as_o be_v a_o mean_v ordain_v by_o god_n for_o such_o a_o end_n likewise_o if_o then_o once_o to_o be_v baptize_v be_v a_o duty_n enjoin_v every_o disciple_n of_o jesus_n christ_n or_o such_o as_o profess_v belief_n in_o his_o name_n as_o in_o the_o first_o

of_o many_o thousand_o now_o live_v who_o can_v be_v persuade_v that_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o question_n 1._o i_o desire_v to_o make_v baptism_n nothing_o else_o than_o shall_v here_o point_v at_o john_n 3.5_o except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v of_o water_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n he_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n i.e._n according_a to_o their_o not_o err_v repent_v and_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o remission_n of_o sin_n whether_o ever_o you_o be_v baptize_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n or_o no._n for_o either_o this_o mangle_n of_o the_o sacred_a word_n of_o jesus_n christ_n must_v pass_v for_o a_o currant_n interpretation_n of_o these_o scripture_n or_o else_o baptism_n must_v be_v necessary_a in_o relation_n to_o the_o profession_n or_o whether_o such_o who_o be_v yet_o to_o begin_v it_o this_o must_v be_v so_o unless_o we_o will_v suppose_v that_o god_n have_v one_o method_n and_o way_n of_o save_a man_n in_o those_o time_n in_o which_o these_o scripture_n be_v first_o give_v out_o and_o deliver_v to_o the_o world_n and_o another_o way_n now_o which_o if_o any_o man_n have_v a_o mind_n to_o suppose_v let_v it_o be_v at_o his_o own_o peril_n for_o my_o part_n i_o look_v for_o salvation_n in_o the_o ancient_a gospel_n way_n and_o upon_o no_o other_o term_n for_o if_o not_o one_o jot_n or_o tittle_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v fail_v till_o heaven_n and_o earth_n pass_v away_o which_o i_o be_o sure_a be_v not_o yet_o matth._n 5.18_o much_o less_o shall_v any_o of_o the_o gospel_n for_o if_o the_o word_n say_v disobedient_a to_o this_o part_n of_o the_o gospel_n upon_o occasion_n of_o some_o erroneous_a notion_n or_o opinion_n by_o which_o they_o have_v be_v persuade_v that_o they_o have_v do_v their_o duty_n in_o refuse_v baptism_n upon_o the_o term_n in_o which_o i_o plead_v it_o when_o they_o have_v do_v the_o contrary_a though_o i_o will_v not_o say_v their_o salvation_n be_v or_o be_v desperate_o hazard_v hereby_o yet_o i_o do_v believe_v it_o to_o be_v much_o prejudice_v hereby_o for_o to_o what_o degree_n baptism_n when_o due_o use_v do_v by_o the_o institutive_a will_n and_o commandment_n of_o god_n that_o they_o may_v establish_v their_o own_o tradition_n but_o as_o no_o man_n that_o do_v acknowledge_v the_o authority_n and_o divinity_n of_o the_o scripture_n can_v easy_o satisfy_v himself_o in_o live_v in_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o of_o its_o know_a rule_n and_o precept_n without_o the_o countenance_n and_o protection_n such_o as_o it_o be_v of_o some_o vain_a imagination_n and_o deceitful_a reason_n or_o other_o so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o case_n with_o some_o who_o have_v no_o mind_n to_o this_o way_n of_o god_n baptism_n i_o mean_v though_o otherwise_o convince_v of_o the_o nullity_n of_o infant-baptism_n have_v take_v hold_v of_o certain_a delusive_a plea_n whereby_o to_o justify_v their_o nonconformity_n to_o this_o rule_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n as_o 1._o that_o baptism_n according_a to_o scripture_n example_n object_n 1_o be_v not_o to_o be_v administer_v to_o man_n but_o at_o the_o time_n of_o their_o first_o believe_v and_o not_o as_o now_o it_o be_v practise_v by_o some_o long_o after_o the_o time_n in_o which_o they_o first_o begin_v to_o believe_v and_o profess_v the_o gospel_n nor_o to_o any_o but_o such_o as_o be_v babe_n in_o christ_n or_o weak_a christian_n and_o not_o to_o strong_a man_n in_o christ_n or_o well_o grow_v christian_n and_o that_o where_o it_o be_v otherwise_o practise_v there_o that_o baptism_n be_v not_o like_o the_o apostle_n baptism_n and_o consequent_o be_v without_o rule_n or_o example_n from_o the_o scripture_n and_o further_o that_o since_o the_o time_n of_o one_o new-birth_n or_o babeship_n in_o christ_n be_v the_o proper_a season_n for_o the_o reception_n of_o baptism_n and_o that_o every_o thing_n be_v beautiful_a in_o its_o season_n that_o therefore_o much_o of_o the_o beauty_n and_o lustre_n of_o that_o ordinance_n be_v lose_v when_o administer_v to_o old_a disciple_n and_o be_v a_o thing_n as_o uncomely_a and_o incongruous_a as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o do_v a_o action_n proper_a to_o a_o child_n to_o all_o which_o i_o answer_v 1._o by_o way_n of_o
their_o repentance_n this_o end_n and_o use_v likewise_o be_v better_o answer_v in_o man_n baptism_n who_o do_v repent_v then_o in_o infant_n who_o do_v not_o 1._o because_o man_n who_o have_v begin_v to_o repent_v be_v in_o a_o good_a capacity_n to_o receive_v confirmation_n and_o establishment_n in_o their_o hope_n and_o confidence_n of_o receive_v remission_n of_o sin_n from_o god_n upon_o their_o repentance_n and_o consolation_n thereby_o whereas_o infant_n while_o such_o be_v altogether_o uncapable_a of_o any_o such_o thing_n in_o respect_n whereof_o this_o end_n be_v make_v frustrate_a when_o baptism_n be_v give_v to_o they_o 2._o because_o there_o be_v a_o great_a appearance_n both_o of_o the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o vouchsafe_v and_o apply_v such_o a_o mean_n as_o baptism_n be_v to_o strengthen_v man_n faith_n in_o his_o promise_n of_o remission_n of_o sin_n upon_o their_o repentance_n unto_o such_o who_o 1._o have_v need_n of_o this_o confirmation_n and_o 2._o be_v capable_a of_o receive_v it_o than_o there_o be_v in_o that_o application_n of_o it_o which_o be_v make_v to_o infant_n who_o neither_o have_v need_n of_o it_o nor_o yet_o be_v capable_a of_o receive_v it_o 4._o if_o it_o be_v call_v the_o baptism_n of_o repentance_n for_o remission_n of_o sin_n because_o the_o person_n who_o be_v baptize_v do_v thereby_o profess_v and_o declare_v unto_o the_o world_n that_o they_o look_v for_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n from_o god_n upon_o their_o repentance_n yet_o this_o end_n also_o be_v better_o answer_v in_o man_n baptism_n then_o in_o infant_n because_o man_n be_v capable_a of_o make_v such_o a_o profession_n and_o declaration_n of_o themselves_o to_o the_o world_n in_o and_o by_o their_o baptism_n when_o as_o infant_n be_v altogether_o uncapable_a of_o do_v any_o such_o thing_n 5._o if_o it_o be_v call_v the_o baptism_n of_o repentance_n etc._n etc._n because_o it_o seal_v and_o confirm_v the_o covenant_n or_o promise_n of_o god_n make_v to_o man_n touch_v the_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n upon_o their_o repentance_n yet_o this_o end_n and_o use_v also_o be_v attain_v upon_o far_o better_a term_n in_o the_o administration_n of_o baptism_n to_o believer_n and_o to_o man_n of_o understanding_n than_o it_o be_v or_o can_v be_v when_o administer_v to_o infant_n who_o have_v neither_o for_o if_o this_o end_n and_o use_n shall_v be_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o denomination_n of_o baptism_n yet_o this_o must_v be_v suppose_v that_o the_o intent_n of_o god_n in_o make_v baptism_n a_o seal_n of_o his_o covenant_n and_o promise_n be_v not_o to_o make_v his_o covenant_n more_o sure_a in_o itself_o but_o to_o give_v it_o thereby_o a_o more_o sure_a stable_n and_o unquestionable_a be_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o apprehension_n of_o man_n and_o if_o so_o this_o end_n can_v be_v attain_v in_o infant_n by_o their_o baptism_n because_o they_o want_v the_o use_n and_o exercise_v of_o their_o reason_n judgement_n and_o understanding_n without_o which_o the_o article_n and_o term_n of_o god_n covenant_n will_v never_o take_v place_n or_o have_v a_o be_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o any_o by_o way_n of_o belief_n 3._o another_o end_n of_o baptism_n seem_v to_o be_v this_o viz._n that_o such_o who_o be_v baptize_v may_v thereby_o signify_v their_o acceptance_n of_o and_o consent_n unto_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o covenant_n of_o god_n with_o man_n do_v consist_v of_o certain_a article_n to_o be_v observe_v and_o keep_v by_o each_o party_n covenant_v as_o covenant_n among_o man_n general_o do_v and_o as_o among_o man_n the_o party_n covenant_v be_v wont_a to_o signify_v their_o mutual_a consent_n to_o their_o respective_a article_n by_o some_o solemn_a act_n of_o they_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o witness_n as_o by_o sign_v seal_v deliver_v etc._n etc._n so_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n between_o he_o and_o man_n will_v have_v something_o like_a unto_o this_o do_v by_o man_n public_o to_o signify_v their_o consent_n to_o the_o term_n of_o it_o as_o well_o as_o what_o be_v do_v by_o he_o to_o declare_v his_o readiness_n to_o do_v and_o perform_v what_o he_o have_v undertake_v on_o his_o part_n now_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o a_o obediential_a subjection_n to_o all_o his_o law_n and_o precept_n be_v the_o condition_n of_o this_o covenant_n on_o man_n part_n at_o what_o time_n soever_o he_o enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o god_n and_o undertake_v the_o performance_n of_o the_o condition_n he_o be_v to_o sign_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o witness_n by_o that_o solemn_a act_n of_o he_o in_o be_v baptize_v in_o this_o respect_n especial_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v promise_v on_o god_n part_n be_v too_o evident_a to_o be_v deny_v by_o any_o but_o those_o that_o will_v not_o see_v from_o act_n 2.38_o 39_o repent_v and_o be_v baptize_v every_o one_o of_o you_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o you_o shall_v receive_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o the_o promise_n be_v to_o you_o and_o to_o your_o child_n and_o to_o all_o that_o be_v afar_o off_o even_o as_o many_o as_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v call_v and_o that_o god_n do_v not_o intend_v this_o way_n only_o for_o those_o to_o who_o these_o word_n be_v then_o speak_v or_o for_o the_o man_n and_o woman_n of_o that_o generation_n only_o but_o that_o it_o be_v to_o be_v his_o stand_a method_n through_o all_o generation_n
