ease_n and_o quiet_a now_o and_o as_o for_o christ_n and_o grace_n and_o holiness_n they_o care_v no_o more_o for_o they_o because_o they_o have_v no_o more_o use_n of_o they_o nay_o to_o go_v further_o observe_v it_o this_o poor_a creature_n may_v in_o his_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n apprehend_v and_o think_v that_o he_o do_v renounce_v all_o sin_n true_o and_o that_o he_o put_v the_o high_a esteem_n and_o great_a account_n upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n if_o he_o look_v into_o his_o own_o apprehension_n he_o may_v think_v he_o do_v thus_o and_o yet_o the_o union_n and_o league_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v never_o break_v all_o this_o may_v be_v in_o sense_n and_o feeling_n and_o a_o honest_a minister_n if_o he_o be_v not_o very_o wise_a in_o charity_n will_v judge_v so_o as_o shall_v appear_v by_o this_o instance_n take_v water_n seethe_v hot_a though_o in_o nature_n it_o be_v the_o cold_a of_o all_o element_n yet_o while_o it_o continue_v on_o the_o fire_n it_o grow_v so_o hot_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v feel_v no_o cold_a at_o all_o in_o it_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o cold_a remain_v in_o it_o as_o the_o philosopher_n conceive_v for_o pluck_v the_o fire_n from_o the_o water_n or_o the_o water_n from_o the_o fire_n and_o it_o will_v return_v to_o coldness_n again_o and_o freeze_v the_o soon_o because_o when_o it_o be_v take_v from_o the_o fire_n it_o beat_v out_o the_o heat_n with_o the_o more_o violence_n now_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o cold_a be_v there_o and_o yet_o not_o perceive_v be_v because_o the_o fierceness_n of_o the_o heat_n do_v overmaster_v it_o and_o make_v it_o retire_v and_o not_o express_v itself_o in_o outward_a appearance_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o terrify_a hypocrite_n in_o these_o pang_n of_o extremity_n and_o horror_n of_o conscience_n when_o the_o soul_n be_v possess_v with_o the_o fierce_a indignation_n of_o the_o almighty_a when_o the_o flash_n of_o everlasting_a vengeance_n seize_v upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o sinner_n this_o take_v off_o the_o pleasure_n delight_n and_o content_n which_o the_o heart_n have_v in_o sin_n though_o the_o soul_n love_v it_o and_o the_o heart_n embrace_v it_o and_o the_o spirit_n close_o with_o it_o yet_o he_o can_v find_v and_o feel_v in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n no_o pleasure_n at_o all_o in_o sin_n nor_o no_o sweetness_n in_o his_o lust_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o domineer_a vengeance_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o take_v off_o all_o the_o pleasantness_n that_o be_v in_o it_o before_o and_o therefore_o the_o adulterer_n that_o have_v his_o dalliance_n every_o morning_n if_o god_n let_v the_o flame_n of_o his_o vengeance_n once_o into_o his_o soul_n as_o he_o have_v flame_v in_o lust_n all_o his_o sweetness_n and_o delight_n in_o sin_n will_v vanish_v away_o in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n but_o yet_o his_o soul_n cleave_v to_o his_o base_a lust_n still_o and_o his_o heart_n be_v knit_v to_o they_o and_o the_o league_n and_o combination_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v never_o break_v and_o part_v so_o that_o by_o this_o we_o may_v see_v why_o a_o sinner_n in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n may_v think_v he_o have_v no_o delight_n in_o sin_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o league_n between_o sin_n and_o the_o soul_n still_o and_o this_o hypocrite_n may_v thus_o continue_v all_o the_o while_n the_o sound_n of_o the_o stroke_n be_v upon_o he_o if_o haply_o his_o affection_n be_v stir_v after_o some_o sin_n then_o say_v conscience_n you_o remember_v what_o be_v do_v before_o you_o remember_v what_o you_o do_v such_o and_o such_o a_o time_n will_v you_o fain_o be_v in_o hell_n again_o i_o will_v arrest_v you_o for_o this_o one_o day_n say_v conscience_n and_o so_o his_o soul_n fly_v off_o from_o his_o curse_a distemper_n not_o that_o the_o union_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v break_v but_o only_o his_o corruption_n for_o the_o present_n be_v abate_v for_o act_v by_o this_o time_n you_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o i_o enter_v upon_o this_o point_n which_o be_v this_o to_o undermine_v the_o bottom_n that_o bear_v up_o the_o soul_n of_o many_o carnal_a man_n in_o the_o world_n and_o to_o cut_v off_o all_o plea_n and_o to_o raze_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o carnal_a confidence_n under_o heaven_n therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v it_o you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v marvellous_a hard_a these_o truth_n be_v marvellous_a terrible_a quest._n but_o some_o may_v say_v what_o do_v you_o think_v that_o all_o those_o which_o will_v not_o come_v under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o enjoy_v it_o do_v you_o think_v that_o all_o that_o will_v not_o seek_v out_o for_o the_o gospel_n that_o want_v you_o will_v yield_v the_o day_n therefore_o take_v these_o truth_n home_n to_o your_o soul_n and_o reason_n and_o parley_v sound_o and_o thorough_o with_o your_o own_o heart_n after_o this_o manner_n why_o how_o far_o be_o i_o from_o heaven_n if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o yet_o open_v my_o eye_n and_o humble_v my_o heart_n and_o enlarge_v my_o soul_n if_o i_o never_o yet_o have_v a_o longing_n after_o a_o saviour_n what_o not_o desire_v heaven_n how_o then_o can_v i_o dream_v or_o think_v that_o god_n will_v show_v mercy_n to_o my_o soul_n in_o the_o pardon_n of_o my_o sin_n if_o no_o desire_n no_o christ_n no_o desire_n no_o heaven_n but_o i_o have_v no_o desire_n therefore_o no_o heaven_n no_o christ_n no_o happiness_n the_o lord_n settle_v these_o thing_n upon_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o may_v never_o give_v quiet_a to_o your_o heart_n nor_o rest_n to_o your_o soul_n till_o you_o find_v this_o sound_a desire_n wrought_v in_o you_o belove_a what_o will_v you_o do_v for_o heaven_n if_o you_o can_v so_o much_o as_o desire_v to_o come_v to_o heaven_n and_o happiness_n quest_n but_o here_o some_o will_v say_v this_o be_v a_o very_a strict_a course_n this_o be_v a_o very_a narrow_a passage_n indeed_o let_v we_o see_v how_o we_o may_v not_o be_v cozen_v in_o our_o condition_n nor_o deceive_v by_o rest_v in_o our_o performance_n etc._n etc._n ans_fw-fr i_o refer_v my_o answer_n to_o these_o three_o conclusion_n conclusion_n 1_o first_o thou_o must_v know_v that_o the_o remainder_n of_o those_o distemper_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v rest_v upon_o the_o merit_n of_o evil_a of_o punishment_n and_o make_v know_v a_o great_a good_a to_o the_o heart_n than_o ease_n and_o the_o removal_n of_o the_o outward_a plague_n and_o horror_n the_o
spirit_n of_o god_n undermine_v these_o distemper_n and_o corruption_n the_o corruption_n of_o the_o soul_n will_v fain_o have_v ease_n but_o the_o spirit_n say_v there_o be_v a_o better_a good_a than_o ease_n that_o say_v horror_n be_v terrible_a but_o the_o spirit_n say_v sin_n be_v more_o miserable_a look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o good_a cordial_n it_o will_v work_v out_o a_o distemper_n though_o it_o lie_v long_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n yet_o it_o will_v drive_v it_o away_o at_o length_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o almighty_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o possess_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o soul_n true_o humble_v i_o will_v fain_o express_v myself_o more_o full_o you_o must_v know_v that_o these_o shift_n of_o spirit_n and_o privy_a prank_n of_o heart_n whereby_o the_o devil_n wind_v himself_o in_o upon_o a_o terrify_a conscience_n they_o be_v the_o last_o cast_v the_o main_a hold_n of_o satan_n he_o be_v now_o drive_v into_o his_o trenâ—hes_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v play_v fast_o and_o loose_v a_o long_a time_n and_o discover_v desperate_a subtlety_n original_a corruption_n be_v like_o a_o fountain_n now_o a_o fountain_n have_v many_o conduit_n some_o near_a some_o further_a but_o if_o there_o be_v any_o water_n in_o the_o fountain_n the_o near_a conduit_n will_v have_v it_o soon_o so_o if_o there_o be_v any_o original_a corruption_n as_o there_o be_v in_o all_o it_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v see_v in_o this_o conduit_n of_o selfe-ease_n and_o selfe-confidence_n in_o horror_n to_o be_v avoid_v and_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v the_o naturalist_n observe_v the_o heart_n be_v the_o last_o that_o die_v therefore_o though_o the_o eye_n be_v dim_a and_o the_o tongue_n falter_v and_o the_o hand_n be_v feeble_a yet_o the_o pulse_n of_o the_o heart_n will_v go_v still_o so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v any_o life_n there_o so_o it_o be_v here_o the_o pulse_n of_o original_a corruption_n will_v be_v see_v in_o these_o base_a distemper_n of_o spirit_n which_o cleave_v unto_o we_o while_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n but_o they_o be_v still_o undermine_v and_o oppose_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n conclusion_n 2_o second_o judge_v not_o thyself_o in_o time_n of_o extremity_n and_o horror_n of_o spirit_n by_o the_o not_o stir_v and_o not_o move_v of_o thy_o affection_n to_o sin_n do_v not_o think_v thy_o estate_n good_a because_o thou_o find_v not_o this_o neither_o judge_n thy_o condition_n ill_o because_o thou_o find_v some_o corruption_n stir_v at_o such_o time_n for_o that_o be_v the_o false_a ground_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n he_o judge_v the_o water_n to_o be_v mere_o hot_a because_o he_o can_v feel_v no_o cold_a he_o think_v he_o have_v no_o love_n to_o sin_n because_o he_o can_v feel_v that_o he_o have_v any_o affection_n to_o it_o in_o the_o time_n of_o horror_n but_o he_o be_v deceive_v for_o the_o act_n of_o sin_n may_v be_v overpowr_v when_o the_o union_n between_o sin_n and_o the_o soul_n still_o remain_v as_o for_o example_n a_o poor_a saint_n of_o god_n may_v have_v god_n spirit_n and_o yet_o never_o perceive_v it_o because_o the_o spirit_n may_v sometime_o either_o suspend_v his_o action_n or_o else_o the_o action_n may_v be_v overclouded_n by_o the_o distemper_n so_o it_o be_v here_o satan_n may_v rule_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n and_o cast_v in_o the_o seed_n of_o base_a corruption_n and_o build_v hold_v of_o distemper_n and_o the_o poor_a soul_n not_o understand_v the_o same_o quest_n but_o how_o shall_v a_o man_n judge_v himself_o in_o such_o time_n ans_fw-fr i_o answer_v in_o such_o time_n labour_v to_o see_v how_o thy_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v to_o see_v the_o beauty_n of_o holiness_n and_o how_o thy_o understanding_n come_v to_o prize_v the_o excellency_n of_o goodness_n for_o itself_o how_o thy_o heart_n stand_v bend_v to_o entertain_v all_o the_o truth_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n make_v know_v unto_o thou_o and_o mark_v what_o now_o i_o say_v if_o thou_o desire_v holiness_n for_o itself_o and_o the_o bent_n of_o thy_o heart_n be_v after_o holiness_n so_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v content_a to_o be_v ease_v by_o holiness_n unless_o thou_o be_v possess_v overpowr_v by_o holiness_n and_o the_o virtue_n thereof_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o thou_o judge_v thyself_o by_o this_o mean_n suffer_v i_o to_o express_v myself_o after_o this_o manner_n that_o every_o one_o may_v understand_v conceive_v two_o woman_n the_o one_o sick_a the_o other_o in_o love_n both_o desire_n the_o physician_n the_o sick_a desire_n the_o physician_n to_o be_v heal_v by_o he_o the_o other_o desire_v he_o not_o so_o much_o to_o be_v heal_v but_o she_o be_v desirous_a to_o be_v marry_v to_o he_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v carry_v in_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o affection_n to_o godliness_n he_o will_v not_o have_v christ_n only_o to_o heal_v he_o but_o he_o will_v be_v marry_v to_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v enjoy_v the_o god_n of_o all_o pardon_v that_o he_o may_v enjoy_v the_o god_n of_o all_o purge_n and_o purify_n take_v notice_n of_o it_o sometime_o man_n in_o time_n of_o sickness_n use_v that_o for_o physic_n which_o in_o the_o time_n of_o health_n they_o use_v for_o common_a diet_n so_o a_o gracious_a and_o holy_a heart_n in_o the_o time_n of_o terror_n and_o vexation_n of_o conscience_n will_v embrace_v holiness_n not_o for_o physic_n sake_n only_o to_o be_v heal_v by_o it_o but_o for_o diet_n sake_n to_o live_v by_o holiness_n that_o he_o may_v take_v possession_n of_o holiness_n and_o that_o holiness_n may_v take_v possession_n of_o he_o this_o be_v the_o best_a judgement_n the_o soul_n have_v in_o time_n of_o extremity_n for_o mark_v some_o passage_n of_o this_o nature_n it_o be_v possible_a out_o of_o self-love_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o a_o man_n self_n to_o desire_v ease_n and_o quietness_n but_o he_o care_v not_o by_o who_o if_o god_n or_o christ_n or_o holiness_n or_o prayer_n will_v ease_v he_o let_v they_o do_v it_o and_o all_o this_o may_v be_v for_o mere_a self-love_n not_o for_o any_o love_n of_o christ_n or_o holiness_n at_o all_o but_o to_o have_v the_o soul_n carry_v with_o desire_n to_o a_o supernatural_a good_a to_o holiness_n in_o the_o beauty_n thereof_o that_o it_o may_v enjoy_v it_o and_o be_v possess_v of_o it_o corrupt_a nature_n can_v corrupt_a nature_n will_v not_o come_v to_o this_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n only_o that_o can_v enable_v a_o man_n to_o do_v it_o suffer_v i_o to_o express_v a_o passage_n or_o two_o this_o way_n the_o extremity_n of_o god_n indignation_n be_v a_o far_o great_a evil_a than_o all_o the_o good_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n can_v be_v comfortable_a it_o be_v a_o far_o great_a evil_a than_o any_o thing_n here_o below_o better_o to_o be_v in_o beggary_n better_o to_o be_v in_o prison_n better_o to_o be_v persecute_v than_o to_o be_v torment_v than_o to_o be_v set_v upon_o a_o continual_a wrack_n by_o the_o horror_n of_o conscience_n now_o as_o the_o indignation_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v a_o far_o great_a punishment_n than_o these_o so_o the_o ease_n from_o this_o be_v a_o great_a good_a than_o can_v proceed_v from_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o the_o ease_n be_v answerable_o good_a as_o the_o indignation_n be_v evil_a a_o wicked_a man_n will_v have_v ease_n for_o his_o sin_n therefore_o his_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a good_a than_o his_o ease_n but_o a_o gracious_a heart_n desire_v holiness_n beyond_o ease_n and_o and_o yet_o have_v a_o vile_a and_o pollute_a soul_n if_o his_o old_a distemper_n be_v still_o remain_v and_o his_o old_a corruption_n still_o continue_v he_o will_v complain_v and_o say_v i_o have_v ease_n and_o quiet_a now_o but_o my_o heart_n be_v as_o bad_a as_o ever_o if_o he_o have_v ease_n and_o not_o holiness_n he_o can_v not_o be_v satisfy_v if_o he_o be_v of_o a_o right_a stamp_n and_o if_o he_o have_v holiness_n and_o more_o power_n against_o sin_n and_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n prevail_v with_o he_o and_o purge_v he_o from_o corruption_n he_o will_v bless_v god_n name_n that_o be_v the_o second_o conclusion_n 3_o the_o three_o conclusion_n be_v this_o do_v not_o content_v yourselves_o in_o this_o that_o you_o see_v a_o need_n of_o a_o saviour_n

repentance_n be_v sound_a it_o matter_n not_o what_o thou_o have_v be_v a_o rebel_n even_o against_o god_n if_o now_o thou_o can_v believe_v and_o rest_v upon_o god_n and_o repent_v thou_o of_o thy_o sin_n quest_n but_o now_o the_o point_n grow_v on_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o some_o reasonable_a manner_n satisfy_v that_o if_o it_o have_v faith_n than_o it_o can_v be_v satisfy_v but_o many_o seem_v to_o have_v faith_n and_o have_v it_o not_o if_o my_o faith_n be_v true_a i_o can_v gain_v some_o sound_a comfort_n to_o myself_o that_o all_o will_v go_v well_o with_o i_o but_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o answ_n i_o answer_v i_o confess_v that_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o most_o man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v but_o a_o mere_a delusion_n as_o i_o shall_v discover_v in_o the_o next_o use_n god_n only_o know_v the_o way_n thereof_o and_o be_v the_o worker_n of_o it_o the_o text_n say_v every_o man_n than_o have_v hear_v and_o learn_v of_o the_o father_n come_v unto_o i_o the_o father_n
