be_v never_o give_v to_o sin_n by_o the_o bless_a spirit_n of_o christ_n for_o howsoever_o christ_n do_v not_o kill_v the_o old_a man_n present_o yet_o he_o kill_v it_o cortain_o and_o when_o once_o manifest_v the_o other_o therefore_o i_o say_v in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o consider_v the_o several_a effect_n of_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n which_o be_v these_o first_o where_o ever_o there_o be_v a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n there_o be_v a_o seek_v after_o god_n and_o after_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n righteousness_n be_v of_o a_o divine_a nature_n and_o therefore_o it_o always_o carry_v the_o soul_n wherein_o it_o be_v up_o to_o god_n from_o whence_o it_o come_v as_o the_o fire_n be_v heavenly_a do_v always_o move_v upward_o so_o righteousness_n because_o it_o be_v god_n in_o himself_o god_n for_o himself_o god_n as_o he_o be_v accomplish_v with_o his_o holy_a excellency_n and_o admirable_a attribute_n and_o perfection_n god_n as_o he_o be_v take_v he_o altogether_o be_v always_o the_o aim_n and_o scope_n end_n and_o object_n of_o the_o desire_n of_o that_o soul_n that_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n so_o that_o when_o he_o pray_v or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o whatsoever_o he_o do_v he_o seek_v after_o god_n in_o all_o and_o as_o he_o seek_v after_o god_n so_o he_o seek_v after_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n the_o favour_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o presence_n and_o fellowship_n of_o god_n those_o glorious_a inheritance_n which_o be_v god_n and_o be_v call_v his_o because_o they_o be_v with_o he_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o thing_n he_o seek_v after_o that_o have_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n in_o he_o second_o where_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n be_v there_o be_v a_o sutableness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o a_o agreement_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n i_o beteech_v you_o observe_v this_o the_o body_n of_o righteousness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o as_o it_o be_v the_o stamp_n of_o god_n law_n there_o be_v a_o proportion_n and_o conformity_n between_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o resemblance_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o all_o they_o that_o have_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n this_o the_o apostle_n large_o express_v in_o that_o seven_o of_o the_o roman_n from_o the_o 15._o verse_n and_o so_o forward_o i_o consent_v say_v he_o to_o the_o law_n that_o it_o be_v good_a and_o that_o it_o be_v holy_a and_o just_a they_o that_o have_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n they_o do_v not_o only_o find_v a_o truth_n and_o a_o justice_n in_o god_n law_n but_o they_o do_v find_v a_o goodness_n a_o loveliness_n in_o god_n law_n there_o be_v a_o sutableness_n and_o a_o agreement_n between_o their_o spirit_n and_o the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n not_o only_o in_o some_o but_o in_o all_o particular_n those_o branch_n of_o god_n law_n which_o be_v most_o contrary_a to_o their_o custom_n and_o natural_a disposition_n and_o inclination_n they_o see_v they_o good_a they_o behold_v they_o amiable_a they_o find_v a_o disposition_n in_o their_o soul_n suitable_a and_o agreeable_a in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o and_o second_o table_n what_o by_o the_o body_n original_a corruption_n what_o by_o the_o spirit_n the_o habit_n of_o holiness_n or_o original_a righteousness_n now_o than_o the_o whole_a amount_v to_o this_o that_o if_o so_o be_v the_o lord_n christ_n be_v in_o people_n than_o there_o be_v a_o death_n of_o sin_n in_o they_o and_o a_o life_n of_o even_o those_o the_o godly_a have_v power_n oftentimes_o to_o resist_v and_o overcome_v a_o man_n that_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n that_o have_v sin_n alive_a in_o he_o be_v describe_v ephes_n 2._o 3._o to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o do_v fulfil_v the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o therein_o appear_v the_o life_n of_o sin_n when_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v always_o fulfil_v but_o now_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o imperfect_a death_n of_o sin_n appear_v in_o this_o that_o not_o only_o some_o of_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v never_o fulfil_v but_o even_o all_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v always_o more_o or_o less_o cross_v and_o not_o fulfil_v and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o gal._n 5._o 17._o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o so_o that_o you_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v i_o suppose_v that_o latter_a clause_n you_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v be_v not_o only_o mean_v of_o the_o spirit_n that_o by_o the_o flesh_n the_o spirit_n be_v disable_v to_o do_v in_o nothing_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o thing_n it_o will_v this_o be_v a_o four_o effect_v whereby_o the_o weaken_n of_o corruption_n do_v appear_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o able_a to_o work_v in_o we_o that_o which_o it_o will_v no_o not_o in_o any_o particular_a whatsoever_o but_o in_o those_o sin_n that_o be_v most_o natural_a many_o time_n there_o be_v a_o deny_v of_o they_o and_o a_o they_o and_o be_v the_o last_o particular_a whereby_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n appear_v and_o that_o be_v that_o this_o same_o weaken_n and_o lessen_v of_o corruption_n discover_v in_o these_o effect_n that_o i_o have_v open_v unto_o you_o be_v both_o universal_a and_o also_o durable_a and_o permanent_a first_o it_o be_v universal_a there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o weaken_n and_o lessen_v of_o corruption_n in_o some_o part_n but_o in_o all_o and_o herein_o it_o differ_v from_o all_o counterfeit_a death_n of_o sin_n in_o which_o there_o may_v be_v a_o weaken_n of_o some_o sin_n yet_o not_o of_o all_o but_o though_o some_o happy_o be_v weak_a than_o they_o be_v other_o be_v as_o strong_a as_o ever_o but_o wherever_o this_o death_n of_o sin_n be_v indeed_o there_o sin_n be_v universal_o weaken_v and_o this_o also_o will_v appear_v in_o all_o the_o particular_n and_o part_n
with_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n such_o of_o you_o as_o do_v desire_n as_o true_o to_o be_v rid_v of_o sin_n it_o self_n as_o to_o escape_v damnation_n for_o sin_n in_o a_o word_n such_o of_o you_o as_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o corruption_n of_o your_o nature_n and_o groan_v under_o it_o as_o under_o the_o great_a misery_n you_o can_v possible_o lie_v under_o such_o of_o you_o as_o maintain_v a_o invincible_a opposition_n against_o the_o sin_n of_o your_o nature_n and_o make_v they_o your_o daily_a conflict_n you_o be_v god_n people_n and_o to_o you_o i_o speak_v at_o this_o partly_o either_o because_o custom_n or_o shame_n or_o the_o law_n or_o somewhat_o else_o force_v he_o to_o it_o here_o therefore_o be_v the_o main_a pitch_n of_o our_o obedience_n not_o alone_o to_o perform_v what_o be_v the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n but_o to_o let_v the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v the_o first_o mover_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o the_o discharge_n of_o that_o service_n he_o call_v for_o at_o our_o hand_n to_o do_v what_o we_o do_v because_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v do_v it_o to_o perform_v what_o he_o require_v in_o obedience_n to_o he_o because_o he_o require_v it_o our_o saviour_n christ_n put_v these_o together_o in_o his_o prayer_n to_o his_o father_n luke_n 22.42_o if_o thou_o be_v willing_a say_v he_o remove_v this_o cup_n from_o i_o nevertheless_o not_o my_o will_n but_o thou_o be_v do_v he_o say_v not_o that_o he_o will_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v but_o he_o will_v do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o it_o the_o will_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v the_o carrier_n and_o mover_n of_o he_o to_o take_v upon_o he_o the_o great_a work_n of_o redemption_n so_o shall_v it_o be_v with_o we_o in_o every_o thing_n we_o do_v it_o be_v not_o my_o will_n that_o move_v i_o but_o the_o will_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o my_o pleasure_n that_o provoke_v i_o to_o this_o service_n but_o the_o pleasure_n of_o god_n this_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n requisite_a in_o our_o manner_n of_o harken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o may_v be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o point_n only_o let_v i_o add_v one_o thing_n more_o hence_o it_o follow_v clear_o that_o he_o that_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n because_o god_n require_v it_o will_v obey_v all_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o will_v obey_v he_o in_o every_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o in_o one_o thing_n in_o the_o hard_a command_n as_o well_o as_o in_o that_o which_o be_v more_o easy_a in_o that_o which_o most_o cross_v his_o nature_n as_o well_o as_o in_o that_o which_o be_v more_o suitable_a thereunto_o this_o indeed_o be_v that_o which_o make_v a_o christian_a constant_a in_o his_o walk_n with_o god_n notwithstanding_o all_o those_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n he_o meet_v withal_o when_o as_o other_o be_v fain_o to_o balk_v many_o thing_n which_o be_v require_v of_o they_o to_o perform_v the_o hear_n they_o will_v come_v to_o church_n and_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o they_o will_v take_v up_o no_o more_o they_o will_v be_v tie_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o no_o duty_n further_o than_o it_o stand_v with_o their_o own_o occasion_n and_o suit_v with_o their_o own_o sinful_a disposition_n but_o
now_o he_o that_o be_v carry_v along_o in_o all_o his_o service_n by_o the_o will_n of_o god_n if_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a mover_n of_o he_o in_o all_o his_o performance_n then_o when_o ever_o the_o first_o place_n go_v to_o god_n and_o advise_v with_o he_o and_o hear_v what_o his_o good_a pleasure_n be_v towards_o you_o and_o never_o inquire_v of_o your_o own_o carnal_a reason_n again_o there_o be_v oft_o another_o great_a fault_n in_o the_o people_n of_o god_n that_o as_o they_o go_v not_o to_o christ_n in_o the_o first_o place_n for_o advice_n and_o counsel_n so_o in_o the_o know_v that_o his_o case_n be_v marvellous_o fearful_a for_o if_o faith_n be_v in_o he_o indeed_o it_o will_v appear_v you_o can_v keep_v your_o good_a heart_n to_o yourselves_o where_o ever_o fire_n be_v it_o will_v burn_v and_o where_o ever_o faith_n be_v it_o can_v be_v

be_v please_v to_o work_v effectual_o upon_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o sanctify_a work_n on_o the_o understanding_n as_o well_o as_o on_o the_o will_n now_o that_o work_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o understanding_n of_o a_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o true_o differ_v from_o the_o enlighten_v of_o a_o carnal_a hypocrite_n as_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o saint_n from_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n not_o sanctify_v as_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n i_o say_v have_v a_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a work_n of_o sanctification_n upon_o the_o will_n of_o god_n child_n so_o also_o have_v he_o upon_o their_o mind_n and_o understanding_n therefore_o of_o necessity_n wicked_a man_n have_v no_o work_n of_o sanctification_n the_o child_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o differ_v from_o they_o in_o this_o he_o see_v the_o colour_n and_o the_o quantity_n of_o it_o but_o know_v not_o the_o taste_n so_o there_o be_v no_o man_n under_o heaven_n discern_v more_o of_o grace_n than_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o a_o carnal_a man_n may_v talk_v of_o repentance_n and_o faith_n and_o obedience_n yet_o notwithstanding_o there_o be_v a_o sappinesse_n which_o i_o call_v the_o spiritualnesse_n in_o these_o
