he_o and_o unto_o his_o law_n will_v further_o confirm_v and_o strengthen_v we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v vessel_n of_o honour_n unto_o his_o name_n and_o glorify_v the_o gospel_n of_o our_o as_o they_o consider_v not_o but_o rather_o forget_v that_o which_o they_o already_o have_v and_o have_v much_o indeed_o in_o their_o opinion_n have_v nothing_o and_o to_o all_o purpose_n and_o use_n do_v as_o well_o want_v that_o which_o they_o have_v as_o that_o which_o they_o have_v not_o so_o it_o oftentimes_o happen_v to_o the_o dear_a child_n of_o god_n that_o while_o they_o look_v and_o breath_n after_o that_o which_o they_o have_v not_o yet_o attain_v unto_o they_o forget_v and_o neglect_v that_o which_o they_o have_v receive_v and_o use_v it_o not_o to_o their_o comfort_n and_o rejoice_v as_o otherwise_o they_o shall_v this_o overreaching_a and_o importunite_v of_o they_o satan_n abuse_v against_o they_o from_o the_o opinion_n of_o have_v nothing_o to_o blind_v their_o eye_n not_o to_o see_v the_o present_a grace_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o they_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o in_o the_o course_n of_o godliness_n and_o religion_n 3.11_o we_o may_v not_o think_v we_o have_v attain_v the_o goal_n or_o be_v come_v unto_o the_o end_n of_o our_o race_n but_o forget_v that_o which_o be_v behind_o we_o and_o press_v on_o unto_o that_o which_o be_v before_o must_v contend_v as_o to_o a_o mark_n unto_o the_o reward_n of_o that_o most_o high_a call_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n but_o he_o speak_v it_o not_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o in_o thankfulness_n acknowledge_v the_o former_a mercy_n of_o god_n bestow_v upon_o we_o or_o not_o use_v they_o unto_o our_o comfort_n as_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n and_o favour_n towards_o we_o but_o that_o we_o may_v not_o stay_v in_o our_o present_a profit_v but_o add_v daily_o a_o new_a and_o fresh_a increase_n that_o as_o from_o a_o large_a and_o great_a heap_n of_o benefit_n we_o may_v more_o and_o more_o assure_v ourselves_o that_o we_o be_v belove_v of_o god_n and_o shall_v enjoy_v the_o inheritance_n of_o his_o kingdom_n when_o the_o apostle_n say_v work_v your_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n and_o labour_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a though_o the_o meaning_n be_v not_o 10._o that_o we_o shall_v put_v confidence_n of_o salvation_n in_o work_n yet_o it_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o work_n and_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v testification_n of_o god_n spirit_n dwell_v in_o our_o heart_n more_o evident_a and_o pregnant_a then_o that_o satan_n himself_o can_v or_o dare_v deny_v they_o we_o may_v not_o suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v so_o overbear_v of_o the_o enemy_n under_o the_o colour_n of_o zeal_n and_o desire_n to_o do_v well_o as_o not_o to_o remember_v wherein_o the_o lord_n have_v already_o give_v we_o some_o part_n of_o well_o do_v not_o so_o to_o strive_v unto_o that_o we_o have_v not_o as_o to_o forget_v that_o which_o by_o his_o grace_n we_o already_o have_v but_o rather_o with_o all_o thankfulness_n acknowledge_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n from_o thence_o assure_v ourselves_o of_o the_o continuance_n and_o finish_n of_o the_o work_n begin_v in_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n as_o slowness_n get_v nothing_o so_o preposterous_a haste_n lose_v all_o it_o be_v the_o subtlety_n and_o malice_n of_o the_o enemy_n when_o he_o can_v hold_v we_o with_o himself_o to_o hasten_v and_o push_v we_o on_o so_o fast_o and_o so_o headelong_v as_o by_o rashness_n we_o may_v fall_v into_o of_o of_o they_o last_o of_o all_o we_o be_v fit_v to_o receive_v no_o good_a
fire_n therefore_o if_o we_o do_v but_o a_o little_a consider_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o fire_n we_o shall_v a_o great_a deal_n better_a judge_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o among_o other_o these_o property_n we_o find_v to_o be_v in_o the_o fire_n first_o of_o all_o it_o will_v burn_v up_o and_o consume_v thing_n that_o may_v bâ—_n burn_v and_o consume_v and_o therefore_o light_v upon_o shawe_n spirit_n and_o fire_n for_o which_o cause_n the_o spirit_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v compare_v unto_o fire_n nay_o it_o be_v sometime_o call_v fire_n for_o john_n say_v that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n shall_v baptise_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n &_o with_o fire_n that_o be_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v like_a unto_o the_o fire_n therefore_o as_o true_o and_o as_o certain_o as_o we_o may_v say_v that_o there_o be_v fire_n where_o we_o see_v straw_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n consume_v or_o gold_n and_o silver_n fine_o purge_v or_o great_a light_n in_o dark_a place_n or_o great_a heat_n in_o body_n that_o be_v numb_a before_n even_o so_o true_o we_o may_v say_v and_o so_o certain_o we_o may_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o we_o when_o we_o see_v our_o coruption_n consume_v our_o soul_n purge_v from_o the_o dross_n of_o sin_n our_o heart_n enlighten_v and_o make_v hot_a in_o walk_v and_o work_v according_a to_o that_o light_n the_o second_o question_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v question_n whether_o that_o man_n which_o have_v once_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n may_v loose_v it_o and_o have_v it_o quench_v in_o he_o to_o this_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o and_o work_v in_o diverse_a man_n diverselie_o in_o diverse_a measure_n therefore_o we_o must_v consider_v of_o the_o diverse_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o then_o frame_v our_o answer_n according_o first_o then_o there_o be_v a_o light_a and_o lesser_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o that_o this_o inferior_a or_o lesser_a kind_n of_o work_v may_v be_v take_v away_o appear_v plainelye_o by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o our_o savioure_n christ_n propound_v for_o there_o beside_o they_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n into_o good_a ground_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n some_o a_o hundred_o some_o thirty_o some_o sixty_o fold_n he_o do_v also_o make_v mention_n of_o some_o other_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o yet_o continue_v not_o and_o what_o have_v not_o these_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o yes_o doubtless_o for_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n yea_o they_o receive_v it_o glad_o &_o that_o which_o be_v more_o they_o believe_v that_o which_o they_o have_v receive_v behold_v then_o three_o fruit_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o these_o man_n and_o yet_o they_o continue_v not_o for_o they_o believe_v indeed_o but_o their_o faith_n be_v temporary_a it_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o after_o a_o time_n it_o vanish_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n depart_v from_o they_o for_o either_o the_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n of_o this_o life_n do_v draw_v out_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o dry_v they_o up_o or_o else_o the_o fiery_a heat_n of_o persecution_n do_v quite_o consume_v they_o more_o plain_a and_o notable_a for_o this_o purpose_n be_v that_o in_o the_o sixth_o to_o the_o hebrew_n for_o there_o the_o apostle_n faith_n that_o some_o may_v taste_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thereby_o be_v make_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v enlighten_v to_o receive_v heavenly_a gift_n yea_o and_o to_o taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o what_o then_o sure_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o if_o such_o fall_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v be_v renew_v give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o even_o they_o which_o have_v receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o have_v be_v enlighten_v that_o have_v receive_v heavenly_a gift_n &_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v even_o such_o may_v fall_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v in_o such_o there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n of_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o more_o thorough_a and_o effectual_a work_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v it_o this_o the_o apostle_n peter_n describe_v when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o choose_a of_o god_n be_v beget_v again_o of_o the_o immortal_a seed_n of_o the_o word_n this_o be_v not_o a_o bare_a receive_n or_o a_o light_n taste_v of_o the_o word_n but_o it_o be_v a_o deep_a taste_n of_o the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v beget_v and_o bear_v again_o the_o apostle_n john_n set_v down_o a_o other_o note_n of_o it_o say_v that_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o bear_v again_o can_v sin_v that_o be_v they_o can_v make_v a_o occupation_n of_o sin_n they_o cannot_v fall_v flat_a away_o by_o sin_n and_o why_o even_o because_o the_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o even_o that_o seed_n wherewith_o they_o be_v beget_v to_o a_o lively_a hope_n of_o life_n even_o that_o seed_n do_v abide_v and_o will_v abide_v unto_o the_o end_n who_o so_o be_v beget_v again_o by_o this_o seed_n and_o have_v this_o seed_n abide_v in_o he_o the_o spirit_n have_v wrought_v that_o in_o he_o which_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v be_v spirit_n and_o life_n and_o in_o a_o other_o place_n he_o say_v that_o none_o shall_v take_v either_o they_o wax_v profane_a in_o their_o life_n or_o haereticall_a in_o their_o opinion_n do_v the_o child_n of_o god_n love_n on_o this_o manner_n no_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o they_o have_v that_o they_o rejoice_v when_o their_o pride_n may_v be_v pull_v down_o or_o their_o haughtiness_n abate_v either_o by_o some_o sharp_a rebuke_n or_o by_o some_o fearful_a threaten_n or_o by_o some_o moderate_a correction_n from_o the_o lord_n for_o they_o know_v that_o if_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o saint_n paul_n to_o be_v buffit_v and_o that_o by_o the_o minister_n of_o satan_n to_o the_o intent_n that_o his_o pride_n may_v be_v beat_v down_o than_o it_o be_v much_o more_o needful_a for_o they_o after_o sundry_a way_n to_o be_v humble_v beside_o they_o do_v not_o only_o desire_v the_o word_n but_o they_o also_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n until_o it_o please_v he_o to_o work_v further_o in_o they_o thereby_o and_o this_o wait_v be_v as_o earnest_a as_o be_v they_o who_o have_v watch_v all_o the_o night_n do_v wait_v and_o look_v for_o the_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n second_o as_o they_o see_v their_o want_n so_o also_o they_o see_v that_o grace_n they_o have_v receive_v and_o be_v for_o that_o time_n will_v appayde_v and_o content_v therewith_o and_o therefore_o as_o their_o want_n do_v humble_a they_o so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n receive_v do_v comfort_n they_o and_o as_o their_o want_n do_v call_v upon_o they_o and_o cause_v they_o to_o seek_v more_o so_o that_o they_o have_v do_v provoke_v they_o to_o be_v thankful_a for_o that_o they_o have_v receive_v see_v then_o a_o quite_o contrary_a course_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o those_o that_o of_o sincerity_n do_v worship_n god_n see_v i_o say_v how_o contrary_o the_o grace_n and_o gift_n of_o god_n do_v work_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o from_o the_o consideration_n hereof_o we_o may_v well_o draw_v a_o four_o rule_n whereby_o to_o make_v trial_n and_o examination_n of_o ourselves_o so_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n in_o a_o word_n when_o a_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v be_v enlighten_v unto_o a_o certain_a and_o sufficient_a knowledge_n of_o god_n will_n when_o he_o find_v his_o work_n of_o grace_n which_o after_o a_o unspeakable_a manner_n do_v move_v he_o thereunto_o and_o when_o he_o do_v thankful_o acknowledge_v mercy_n receive_v as_o he_o do_v careful_o attend_v and_o waâ—te_v upon_o the_o lord_n till_o he_o bestow_v some_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n upon_o he_o then_o may_v he_o be_v undoubted_o persuade_v that_o he_o have_v find_v the_o spirit_n work_v in_o he_o in_o a_o more_o effectual_a manner_n and_o that_o therefore_o it_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o what_o then_o may_v such_o man_n cast_v off_o all_o care_n no_o for_o unto_o they_o do_v saint_n paul_n give_v this_o charge_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v the_o spirit_n and_o not_o with_o out_o cause_n do_v he_o give_v they_o this_o charge_n for_o though_o the_o and_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o other_o it_o may_v seem_v that_o they_o have_v quite_o quench_v and_o put_v out_o the_o spirit_n neither_o must_v this_o seem_v so_o strange_a for_o if_o the_o image_n of_o god_n which_o be_v more_o perfect_o place_v in_o adam_n than_o it_o be_v now_o in_o we_o if_o i_o say_v thâ—s_v image_n may_v quite_o be_v lose_v and_o blot_v out_o as_o we_o see_v it_o dangerous_o to_o the_o choke_n and_o quench_v of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o they_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v not_o take_v from_o they_o nay_o christ_n do_v still_o continue_v in_o their_o heart_n but_o yet_o for_o want_v of_o godly_a grace_n he_o be_v as_o it_o be_v without_o fashion_n and_o form_n so_o that_o the_o apostle_n do_v as_o it_o be_v travel_v again_o until_o endeavour_n to_o avoid_v it_o both_o in_o general_a and_o in_o particular_a the_o love_n of_o god_n &_o of_o his_o righteousness_n desire_n &_o care_n with_o labour_n &_o contention_n to_o please_v he_o both_o in_o general_a &_o particular_a duty_n and_o here_o again_o we_o have_v a_o lawful_a &_o necessary_a recourse_n unto_o the_o time_n past_a for_o albeit_o we_o have_v nothing_o to_o glory_n in_o before_o god_n 77.6_o when_o the_o question_n be_v of_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o salvation_n yet_o the_o effect_n of_o this_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o in_o the_o former_a which_o be_v not_o but_o in_o those_o who_o be_v first_o belove_v of_o he_o and_o have_v taste_v how_o good_a and_o gracious_a he_o be_v if_o we_o shall_v look_v unto_o the_o exercise_n of_o piety_n and_o of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n piety_n though_o we_o may_v here_o as_o else_o where_n complain_v of_o our_o want_n and_o defect_n yet_o we_o shall_v through_o
grace_n at_o god_n hand_n nay_o we_o do_v not_o esteem_v god_n grace_n when_o we_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o set_v a_o due_a price_n upon_o they_o for_o speak_v of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n of_o sin_n or_o of_o righteousness_n speak_v of_o christ_n or_o of_o our_o redemption_n &_o justification_n by_o he_o yea_o speak_v of_o that_o huge_a and_o heavy_a weight_n of_o glory_n where_o with_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n shall_v be_v crown_v all_o this_o move_v not_o we_o be_v little_o affect_v therewith_o unless_o god_n give_v we_o of_o his_o good_a spirit_n to_o profit_v by_o the_o same_o the_o apostle_n there_o forewith_o good_a reason_n give_v this_o precept_n and_o we_o for_o many_o great_a cause_n be_v to_o listen_v unto_o it_o least_o by_o any_o mean_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v quench_v in_o we_o &_o so_o we_o deprive_v ourselves_o of_o all_o these_o fruit_n now_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n it_o may_v appear_v he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o have_v already_o receive_v the_o spirit_n for_o as_o the_o fire_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v where_o it_o be_v not_o so_o they_o can_v be_v say_v to_o quench_v or_o loose_v the_o spirit_n which_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o receive_v it_o then_o know_v that_o this_o precept_n do_v proper_o beelong_v to_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o they_o especial_o be_v to_o make_v a_o special_a use_n of_o it_o for_o the_o other_o it_o can_v profit_v they_o unless_o that_o as_o the_o seed_n lie_v in_o the_o ground_n a_o long_a time_n do_v afterward_o bud_v and_o become_v fruitful_a so_o this_o continue_v in_o their_o mind_n till_o they_o have_v taste_v in_o some_o good_a sort_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o then_o breed_v in_o they_o some_o carefulness_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v it_o well_o then_o to_o they_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o to_o they_o say_v sainte_n paul_n in_o this_o place_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o if_o we_o do_v somewhat_o seriouslye_o consider_v these_o two_o question_n will_v offer_v themselves_o and_o soon_o arise_v in_o our_o mind_n first_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o second_o if_o we_o have_v it_o whether_o it_o may_v be_v lose_v again_o or_o no_o which_o if_o they_o be_v well_o and_o sufficient_o answer_v they_o will_v doubtless_o give_v great_a force_n unto_o this_o precept_n for_o the_o first_o then_o if_o we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n or_o no_o we_o must_v sure_o understande_v that_o as_o he_o know_v best_o that_o he_o have_v life_n which_o feel_v it_o in_o himself_o so_o he_o best_a know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o feel_v the_o spirit_n work_v in_o he_o and_o if_o we_o will_v further_o know_v by_o the_o peculiar_a work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o first_o of_o all_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o man_n but_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n if_o nothing_o but_o that_o may_v be_v attain_v by_o the_o art_n and_o industry_n of_o a_o man_n then_o sure_o in_o that_o man_n be_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o the_o spirit_n be_v from_o god_n it_o be_v from_o above_o it_o be_v above_o nature_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n do_v set_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n against_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n when_o he_o say_v we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n not_o of_o the_o world_n but_o of_o god_n beside_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v eternal_a and_o endure_v for_o ever_o but_o all_o the_o do_n and_o devise_n of_o man_n they_o perish_v and_o in_o time_n they_o have_v a_o end_n therefore_o though_o a_o man_n have_v wisdom_n with_o great_a knowledge_n though_o in_o wit_n and_o skill_n he_o pass_v and_o excel_v the_o common_a sort_n of_o man_n yet_o if_o from_o above_o he_o have_v not_o be_v enlighten_v if_o from_o heaven_n his_o wisdom_n have_v not_o be_v sanctify_v his_o knowledge_n shall_v decay_v his_o wisdom_n shall_v wyther_o like_o grass_n he_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o endure_v for_o ever_o and_o therefore_o say_v s._n paul_n we_o teach_v the_o mystery_n of_o god_n which_o none_o no_o not_o the_o prince_n and_o the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v above_o other_o most_o excellent_a be_v able_a to_o understande_v second_o consider_v whether_o in_o he_o there_o be_v any_o alteration_n or_o change_n for_o the_o wise_a man_n which_o be_v experâ—e_v in_o nature_n can_v say_v that_o in_o every_o generation_n there_o be_v a_o corruption_n and_o we_o see_v that_o the_o seed_n sow_v be_v much_o change_v before_o it_o grow_v up_o and_o bear_v fruit_n then_o needful_a it_o be_v that_o in_o regeneration_n there_o be_v a_o corruption_n of_o sin_n so_o that_o as_o seed_v in_o the_o ground_n so_o sin_n in_o our_o mortal_a body_n may_v decay_v that_o the_o new_a man_n may_v be_v raise_v up_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n take_v possession_n of_o our_o soul_n therefore_o the_o evangelist_n john_n do_v make_v this_o the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o it_o shall_v rebuke_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n and_o this_o so_o needful_a that_o without_o it_o there_o be_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n neither_o yet_o can_v christ_n come_v and_o enter_v into_o that_o man_n hereof_o it_o be_v that_o christ_n compare_v the_o jew_n to_o child_n in_o the_o market_n place_n who_o will_v not_o tiding_n of_o the_o gospel_n therefore_o christ_n say_v that_o whore_n and_o harlot_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n see_v they_o lament_v their_o sin_n before_o the_o proud_a pharisy_n which_o be_v tuch_v with_o no_o remorse_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n it_o be_v that_o christ_n call_v unto_o he_o they_o only_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v teach_v â—hat_n if_o they_o find_v not_o sin_n to_o be_v a_o heavy_a load_n and_o burden_n to_o they_o they_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v they_o fit_v to_o receive_v darkness_n of_o our_o understanding_n how_o unfit_a and_o unmeete_a we_o be_v to_o understande_v and_o conceive_v those_o thing_n that_o do_v above_o all_o other_o especial_o concern_v we_o then_o do_v it_o let_v we_o see_v the_o perverse_a corruption_n of_o our_o judgement_n that_o before_o god_n and_o in_o thing_n belong_v to_o god_n we_o be_v as_o bruit_n beast_n not_o able_a to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v nor_o to_o put_v a_o sound_a difference_n between_o good_a ad_fw-la evil_a then_o do_v it_o let_v we_o see_v that_o our_o reason_n be_v unreasonable_a nay_o that_o it_o be_v turn_v our_o mirth_n into_o mourning_n our_o pleasure_n into_o painfulness_n and_o our_o great_a delight_n into_o most_o bitter_a grief_n if_o it_o do_v proceed_v further_o and_o come_v once_o to_o the_o heart_n and_o to_o the_o stomach_n and_o courage_n that_o be_v in_o we_o than_o it_o cut_v we_o to_o the_o quick_a then_o do_v it_o at_o once_o throw_v we_o down_o in_o humility_n under_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n for_o while_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o man_n we_o be_v as_o stour_n as_o any_o and_o will_v not_o

by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o free_a mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n redeem_v from_o death_n deliver_v from_o hell_n and_o free_v from_o the_o fearful_a condemnation_n of_o the_o wicked_a the_o second_o be_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n which_o indeed_o pass_v all_o understanding_n while_o sin_n and_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n remain_v there_o be_v no_o peace_n nor_o rest_n no_o quietness_n to_o be_v find_v but_o fear_v within_o terror_n without_o and_o trouble_n on_o every_o side_n but_o when_o sin_n be_v once_o nail_v to_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n when_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n be_v take_v out_o of_o our_o conscience_n and_o the_o puninshment_n thereof_o far_o remove_v then_o must_v needs_o ensue_v great_a peace_n for_o our_o accuser_n dare_v not_o proceed_v against_o we_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v we_o and_o god_n be_v at_o one_o with_o we_o and_o for_o this_o we_o have_v the_o warrant_n and_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n can_v flesh_n and_o blood_n persuade_v we_o of_o it_o can_v any_o creature_n assure_v we_o how_o god_n be_v affect_v towards_o we_o no_o doubtless_o and_o therefore_o where_o this_o joy_n and_o peace_n be_v there_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o author_n and_o worker_n of_o the_o same_o for_o as_o no_o man_n know_v what_o be_v in_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n which_o be_v in_o he_o so_o none_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o must_v certify_v our_o hearre_n and_o spirit_n of_o the_o same_o but_o also_o apply_v and_o frame_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a then_o be_v his_o understanding_n inlyghten_v to_o see_v into_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n and_o into_o that_o great_a work_n of_o his_o redemption_n and_o into_o whatsoever_o concern_v the_o save_a health_n of_o his_o soul_n then_o be_v his_o judgement_n reform_v and_o he_o be_v make_v able_a to_o judge_v between_o false_a of_o god_n then_o be_v his_o affection_n in_o some_o good_a measure_n alter_v his_o desire_n be_v set_v not_o upon_o earthly_a but_o upon_o heavenly_a thing_n his_o joy_n be_v not_o in_o the_o earth_n glory_n of_o his_o god_n this_o be_v the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o he_o thus_o he_o live_v that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n and_o thus_o he_o lead_v his_o life_n continual_o for_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o do_v live_v according_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o this_o have_v weakness_n join_v with_o it_o and_o man_n through_o frailty_n may_v soon_o fall_v and_o therefore_o their_o life_n be_v say_v to_o be_v hide_v in_o christ_n because_o in_o full_a and_o perfect_a manner_n it_o do_v not_o appear_v lose_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o let_v we_o see_v what_o like_v or_o mislykinge_v we_o have_v of_o sin_n for_o it_o after_o our_o fall_n we_o do_v hold_v our_o former_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o oftenner_a we_o fall_v the_o more_o thorough_a and_o deadly_a hatred_n we_o conceive_v against_o sin_n undoubted_o that_o frailty_n have_v not_o as_o yet_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o spirit_n second_o come_v and_o see_v how_o it_o stand_v with_o thy_o sorrow_n for_o so_o long_o as_o thy_o sorrow_n increase_v for_o thy_o sin_n it_o can_v be_v think_v that_o sin_n and_o the_o flesh_n have_v overcome_v and_o utter_o quench_v the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o three_o try_v thy_o care_n and_o if_o thou_o groan_v in_o a_o godly_a care_n both_o how_o thou_o may_v be_v able_a to_o wage_v battle_n against_o sin_n in_o the_o plain_a field_n and_o how_o thou_o may_v prevente_v sin_n in_o all_o his_o policy_n thou_o have_v a_o further_a assurance_n that_o sin_n although_o it_o be_v as_o great_a as_o goliath_n yet_o it_o have_v not_o hitherto_o prevail_v against_o thy_o poor_a and_o little_a david_n i_o say_v against_o those_o few_o and_o small_a grace_n which_o the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o thou_o but_o the_o last_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o that_o be_v this_o when_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o redeem_v that_o which_o by_o thy_o fall_n thou_o sufficiency_n of_o it_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o sun_n so_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v compare_v to_o the_o lightning_n which_o do_v not_o give_v any_o certain_a light_n it_o do_v not_o continue_v any_o time_n and_o when_o it_o be_v go_v man_n be_v worse_o than_o they_o be_v before_o so_o do_v it_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o wicked_a for_o beside_o that_o their_o knowledge_n get_v to_o merry_a company_n and_o pass_v away_o the_o time_n and_o so_o as_o they_o term_v it_o they_o will_v purge_v &_o drive_v away_o the_o rage_n of_o melancholy_n they_o never_o go_v to_o any_o preacher_n to_o ask_v of_o the_o lord_n or_o at_o the_o mouth_n of_o his_o spirit_n they_o never_o respect_v to_o prayer_n nor_o seek_v any_o comfort_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god._n but_o to_o put_v away_o sorrow_n on_o this_o sort_n be_v to_o call_v it_o again_o and_o to_o feel_v it_o more_o fresh_o either_o in_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n or_o in_o hell_n contrariwise_o if_o our_o sorrow_n do_v drive_v we_o to_o prayer_n or_o to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v good_a as_o for_o the_o wicked_a and_o profane_a worldling_n though_o as_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v ecclesiact_n 11._o he_o spend_v all_o his_o day_n without_o any_o evil_n yet_o his_o darkness_n be_v great_a than_o the_o light_n his_o sorrow_n great_a than_o his_o pleasure_n his_o loss_n great_a than_o his_o gain_n his_o trouble_n great_a than_o his_o vanity_n in_o hell_n let_v we_o not_o then_o so_o carnal_o shake_v off_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o the_o word_n will_v send_v we_o often_o a_o unquiet_a spirit_n that_o we_o may_v seek_v to_o be_v quiet_a in_o christ._n to_o examine_v ourselves_o herein_o have_v we_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v we_o prick_v by_o it_o then_o have_v we_o profit_v have_v we_o not_o be_v prick_v thereby_o then_o as_o yet_o be_v we_o not_o a_o sacrifice_n for_o the_o lord_n for_o as_o be_v say_v before_o christ_n comfort_v they_o that_o be_v trouble_v he_o help_v they_o god_n as_o before_o we_o be_v to_o superstitious_a in_o serve_v angel_n sant_n &_o other_o false_a god_n nether_a sorrow_n for_o our_o idolatry_n nor_o care_v for_o true_a religion_n have_v we_o not_o blaspheme_v &_o profane_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o unreverent_a hear_v his_o word_n in_o unprofitable_a talk_n of_o his_o work_n &_o abuse_v his_o own_o majesty_n with_o swear_v and_o curse_v as_o much_o as_o we_o ever_o do_v before_o have_v we_o keep_v holy_a the_o saboth_n or_o have_v we_o not_o profane_v it_o by_o open_a neglect_n of_o the_o word_n by_o play_v sport_v drink_v and_o other_o vanity_n do_v we_o not_o still_o send_v forth_o our_o servant_n to_o dispatch_v our_o business_n on_o that_o day_n as_o if_o it_o be_v the_o market_n day_n when_o they_o may_v do_v such_o thing_n most_o lawful_o be_v not_o parent_n householders_n and_o governor_n as_o slack_v in_o provoke_a obedience_n and_o child_n servant_n and_o subject_n as_o flow_v
daily_o renew_a this_o repentance_n be_v figure_v in_o baptism_n both_o in_o that_o we_o must_v die_v to_o sin_n and_o bury_v it_o and_o also_o that_o we_o must_v rise_v again_o to_o newness_n of_o life_n for_o a_o man_n can_v die_v to_o sin_v but_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n neither_o can_v he_o rise_v to_o righteousness_n without_o the_o power_n of_o his_o resurrection_n now_o we_o must_v know_v that_o as_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v so_o we_o must_v also_o receive_v god_n spirit_n if_o god_n promise_v mercy_n to_o our_o child_n much_o more_o to_o we_o if_o we_o believe_v and_o receive_v his_o promise_n if_o to_o they_o which_o be_v a_o far_o of_o much_o more_o to_o they_o that_o be_v near_o and_o yet_o though_o we_o have_v be_v baptize_v a_o hundred_o year_n and_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n we_o may_v die_v in_o our_o sin_n some_o understand_v by_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o grace_n of_o god_n bestow_v on_o the_o apostle_n but_o in_o my_o judgement_n their_o opinion_n be_v not_o sound_a because_o that_o be_v a_o particular_a thing_n give_v only_o to_o they_o of_o that_o time_n this_o promise_n be_v general_a and_o respect_n all_o posterity_n we_o be_v then_o to_o note_n that_o repentance_n be_v a_o continual_a course_n of_o sorrow_n and_o if_o we_o have_v this_o in_o truth_n then_o may_v we_o bold_o seek_v for_o comfort_v out_o of_o god_n woâ—d_n and_o from_o his_o minister_n and_o look_v what_o comfort_n they_o give_v we_o on_o earth_n the_o same_o shall_v be_v seal_v also_o in_o heaven_n wherefore_o as_o it_o be_v requisite_a continual_o to_o till_o the_o ground_n if_o we_o will_v have_v fruit_n and_o daily_o to_o eat_v if_o we_o will_v live_v so_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n we_o must_v be_v humble_v with_o continual_a sorrow_n that_o we_o may_v be_v refresh_v with_o daily_a comfort_n in_o christ_n in_o who_o name_n let_v we_o pray_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n finis_fw-la certain_a wise_a and_o grave_a counsel_n and_o answer_n make_v by_o the_o same_o author_n of_o the_o former_a argument_n unto_o one_o that_o be_v much_o tempt_v with_o unbelief_n he_o give_v this_o counsel_n thy_o love_n and_o pledge_v of_o thy_o spirit_n that_o in_o this_o unbelief_n i_o be_o grieve_v as_o in_o my_o belief_n i_o be_o wont_a to_o be_v comfort_v and_o though_o my_o old_a and_o secret_a sin_n deserve_v that_o i_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v give_v over_o to_o infidelity_n but_o also_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o i_o without_o grief_n and_o remorse_n yet_o lord_n forgive_v my_o sin_n new_a and_o old_a forgive_v my_o unthankâ—ulnes_n lord_n increase_v my_o faith_n and_o grant_v good_a father_n that_o when_o thou_o shall_v restore_v to_o i_o the_o gift_n of_o grace_n again_o that_o i_o may_v use_v it_o in_o fear_n and_o show_v it_o by_o fruit_n or_o if_o this_o do_v not_o prevail_v give_v yourself_o with_o all_o humbleness_n to_o read_v the_o word_n of_o god_n especial_o his_o promise_n and_o be_v still_o attend_v upon_o the_o mean_n wait_v when_o the_o lord_n shall_v enlarge_v your_o heart_n or_o if_o this_o do_v not_o help_v go_v to_o some_o faith_n full_a brother_n confess_v your_o state_n to_o he_o acknowledge_v your_o weakness_n to_o he_o and_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n by_o shame_v yourself_o and_o open_v your_o corruption_n to_o he_o that_o so_o he_o may_v pray_v for_o you_o who_o prayer_n according_a to_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n make_v to_o his_o holy_a ordinance_n herein_o james._n 5._o undoubted_o shall_v be_v hear_v in_o the_o appoint_a time_n thus_o have_v pray_v by_o yourself_o and_o with_o another_o and_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o read_v for_o your_o recovery_n though_o you_o have_v not_o present_a release_n yet_o in_o meekness_n of_o mind_n &_o patience_n of_o your_o spirit_n go_v to_o your_o call_n know_v that_o your_o prayer_n and_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v as_o seed_n must_v have_v some_o time_n between_o the_o sow_v of_o they_o and_o the_o reap_v of_o the_o increase_n and_o fruit_n of_o they_o above_o all_o reason_v not_o with_o your_o temptation_n dispute_v not_o with_o the_o devil_n as_o though_o you_o can_v prevail_v of_o yourself_o and_o as_o i_o will_v not_o you_o shall_v dispute_v with_o your_o temptation_n so_o i_o will_v not_o you_o shall_v despise_v it_o for_o in_o both_o be_v extremity_n if_o you_o take_v it_o too_o much_o to_o heart_n or_o marvel_v how_o you_o shall_v overcome_v such_o a_o temptation_n it_o will_v make_v you_o dull_a or_o desperate_a if_o you_o account_v of_o it_o to_o little_a and_o marvel_v how_o such_o thing_n shall_v come_v into_o your_o head_n which_o be_v not_o wont_a to_o be_v so_o it_o will_v make_v you_o not_o to_o strive_v and_o you_o shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o before_o you_o be_v aware_a if_o you_o account_v of_o it_o too_o fearful_o satan_n will_v oppress_v you_o before_o you_o begin_v to_o fight_v if_o you_o account_v of_o it_o too_o light_o the_o devil_n need_v not_o to_o wrestle_v with_o you_o you_o will_v overthrow_v your_o â—elfe_n therefore_o fear_v in_o respect_n of_o yourself_o fight_v bold_o in_o christ_n tremble_v at_o your_o own_o corruption_n but_o rest_n and_o trust_v in_o christ_n your_o salvation_n if_o still_o you_o be_v tempt_v and_o no_o body_n by_o you_o write_v your_o temptation_n and_o offer_v it_o to_o god_n by_o prayer_n and_o promise_v to_o he_o that_o you_o will_v ask_v counsel_n of_o his_o word_n at_o the_o mouth_n of_o his_o minister_n when_o he_o shall_v give_v you_o just_a occasion_n if_o all_o this_o help_v not_o comfort_n yourself_o with_o this_o pledge_n of_o election_n that_o you_o be_v joy_v when_o you_o feel_v your_o belief_n and_o that_o you_o be_v grieve_v lest_o you_o shall_v displease_v god_n by_o your_o unbelief_n and_o know_v that_o as_o there_o be_v a_o vicissitude_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n which_o you_o must_v use_v so_o there_o be_v also_o a_o vicissitude_n of_o temptation_n whereof_o this_o be_v one_o agianst_a which_o you_o must_v strive_v 2_o unto_o one_o that_o be_v tempt_v with_o worldly_a shame_n shame_n and_o think_v the_o distemperature_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o body_n proceed_v thereof_o he_o say_v on_o this_o sort_n fist_n know_v that_o satan_n have_v not_o a_o absolute_a power_n but_o a_o power_n by_o permission_n to_o try_v we_o against_o which_o we_o must_v arm_v ourselves_o by_o faith_n which_o will_v assure_v we_o that_o either_o the_o lord_n will_v mitigate_v our_o temptation_n if_o our_o power_n and_o patience_n be_v not_o great_a or_o else_o if_o he_o enlarge_v the_o trial_n he_o will_v increase_v our_o strength_n and_o retch_v it_o out_o according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o our_o temptation_n adversary_n to_o persuade_v many_o that_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o body_n and_o feebleness_n of_o their_o brain_n proceed_v of_o their_o temptation_n when_o indeed_o it_o come_v of_o the_o unstaidnes_n of_o their_o mind_n wander_v too_o much_o after_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o devil_n in_o that_o they_o not_o rest_v on_o the_o word_n nor_o depend_v on_o christ_n nor_o content_v themselves_o to_o be_v try_v nor_o comfort_v themselves_o by_o meditation_n attend_v to_o much_o &_o comfort_n to_o often_o with_o the_o devil_n illusion_n and_o temptation_n and_o so_o they_o
