spirit_n of_o and_o withstand_v satan_n say_v who_o resist_v strong_a in_o faith_n as_o also_o this_o that_o the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n say_v of_o abraham_n the_o father_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o friend_n of_o god_n that_o he_o not_o weak_a in_o faith_n etc._n etc._n roman_n the_o four_o yea_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o godly_a man_n as_o in_o respect_n of_o sundry_a time_n and_o diverse_a occasion_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o this_o holy_a virtue_n and_o weak_a also_o what_o a_o faith_n be_v this_o in_o peter_n by_o christ_n comfortable_a word_n not_o only_o eternal_a salvation_n though_o not_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o strength_n or_o certainty_n of_o itself_o yet_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o strength_n power_n and_o assurance_n of_o the_o object_n whereabout_o it_o be_v occupy_v to_o wit_n god_n mercy_n manifest_v in_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n and_o declare_v by_o the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a promise_n of_o the_o word_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o faith_n though_o weak_a do_v lay_v hold_n of_o as_o much_o and_o appropriate_a or_o apply_v as_o much_o as_o a_o firm_a or_o strong_a faith_n that_o be_v jesus_n christ_n whole_o with_o all_o his_o benefit_n and_o merit_n though_o it_o do_v not_o so_o strong_o or_o as_o we_o may_v say_v somewhat_o more_o weak_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v he_o so_o that_o the_o difference_n be_v not_o in_o the_o certainty_n and_o assurance_n of_o faith_n for_o he_o that_o be_v weak_a therein_o may_v for_o 〈◊〉_d measure_n be_v as_o well_o and_o certain_o assure_v as_o he_o that_o be_v strong_a but_o for_o the_o manner_n or_o measure_n of_o apprehend_v or_o apply_v jesus_n christ_n therefore_o as_o he_o that_o lay_v fast_o hold_v of_o a_o thing_n though_o it_o be_v but_o weak_a or_o feeble_a be_v yet_o for_o himself_o as_o well_o assure_v

in_o this_o same_o dangerous_a combat_n whereof_o also_o as_o seem_v to_o i_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n for_o if_o our_o sin_n which_o be_v from_o satan_n malice_n or_o our_o own_o corruption_n do_v grieve_v we_o &_o possess_v our_o heart_n with_o fear_n why_o shall_v not_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o obedience_n which_o be_v from_o god_n yield_v we_o comfort_v &_o fill_v our_o heart_n with_o hope_n not_o because_o they_o be_v in_o we_o for_o so_o we_o do_v many_o time_n weaken_v they_o at_o the_o jest_n if_o not_o impair_v or_o hurt_v they_o but_o as_o they_o be_v in_o we_o from_o god_n who_o we_o be_v sure_o will_v accept_v of_o his_o own_o good_a work_n and_o grace_n vouchsafe_v unto_o us._n last_o i_o say_v that_o as_o we_o abstain_v not_o from_o meat_n and_o drink_v and_o other_o necessary_a aide_n of_o natural_a life_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o term_n and_o time_n of_o the_o say_a life_n be_v limit_v by_o god_n so_o there_o be_v no_o man_n unless_o he_o in_o his_o law_n of_o which_o no_o doubt_n of_o it_o the_o apostle_n peter_n treat_v in_o this_o place_n we_o may_v as_o upon_o outward_a testimony_n fruit_n and_o effect_n certain_o conclude_v concern_v faith_n and_o by_o faith_n determine_v touch_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o and_o so_o by_o consequent_a also_o concern_v our_o call_n &_o election_n for_o which_o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n howbeit_o our_o adversary_n yet_o press_v this_o point_n further_o and_o object_n say_v christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n if_o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o commandment_n or_o say_n or_o word_n but_o no_o man_n keep_v his_o word_n therefore_o say_v they_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no._n first_o for_o the_o form_n of_o the_o eternal_a life_n stand_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v see_v that_o merit_n or_o absolute_a obedience_n special_o if_o man_n deal_v with_o one_o that_o be_v just_a as_o christ_n who_o be_v justice_n itself_o must_v needs_o shut_v out_o doubt_v touch_v that_o we_o be_v sure_o we_o have_v deserve_v and_o he_o can_v choose_v but_o of_o justice_n give_v and_o grant_v but_o such_o vain_a home_n or_o abroad_o for_o what_o likelihood_n or_o probability_n be_v there_o that_o he_o shall_v appear_v before_o god_n or_o do_v good_a unto_o man_n who_o spirit_n be_v disquiet_v within_o he_o see_v that_o a_o quiet_a spirit_n be_v a_o thing_n much_o set_v by_o before_o god_n and_o fit_v we_o also_o for_o natural_a duty_n these_o great_a difcfiulty_n &_o danger_n be_v not_o nay_o can_v be_v whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n they_o shall_v have_v good_a success_n that_o fear_v god_n and_o be_v loath_a witting_o on_o willing_o as_o we_o say_v to_o offend_v and_o displease_v he_o and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v not_o only_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o sentence_n here_o but_o almost_o in_o every_o place_n of_o the_o word_n where_o it_o be_v say_v bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o fear_v that_o lord_n where_o also_o we_o be_v to_o know_v further_o that_o such_o sentence_n be_v propound_v unto_o we_o not_o to_o strike_v doubtfulness_n or_o distrust_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n which_o be_v in_o they_o natural_o &_o through_o the_o remainder_n of_o sin_n god_n labour_v by_o so_o many_o mean_n to_o remove_v from_o they_o as_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o word_n the_o participation_n of_o his_o sacrament_n the_o pledge_n &_o powerful_a work_n of_o his_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n for_o so_o god_n in_o his_o word_n and_o deed_n shall_v be_v contrary_a to_o himself_o and_o we_o must_v so_o expound_v his_o word_n as_o we_o find_v no_o contradition_n in_o the_o place_n themselves_o nor_o load_v he_o with_o any_o opposition_n who_o in_o his_o own_o nature_n &_o in_o his_o word_n also_o be_v always_o but_o one_o but_o in_o they_o that_o set_n before_o their_o eye_n on_o the_o one_o side_n their_o own_o weakness_n and_o want_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o &_o in_o their_o sense_n for_o these_o word_n be_v in_o hebrew_n thus_o even_o or_o either_o love_n even_o or_o either_o hatred_n know_v not_o man_n all_o which_o be_v before_o their_o face_n whereas_o we_o may_v perceive_v in_o their_o translation_n they_o add_v the_o word_n worthy_a which_o be_v not_o there_o to_o be_v find_v and_o in_o their_o interpretation_n or_o sense_n they_o add_v god_n and_o his_o favour_n or_o hatred_n there_o be_v not_o in_o this_o part_n of_o the_o text_n any_o of_o the_o name_n whereby_o god_n be_v call_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o before_o we_o come_v to_o deliver_v that_o which_o we_o take_v to_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n here_o i_o think_v that_o even_o the_o text_n as_o they_o turn_v it_o will_v not_o evince_v that_o for_o which_o they_o allege_v it_o for_o though_o we_o shall_v grant_v they_o that_o love_n and_o hatred_n shall_v in_o this_o place_n be_v understand_v of_o god_n love_n &_o hatred_n towards_o man_n a_o four_o place_n out_o of_o phil._n 2._o verse_n 12._o work_v out_o your_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a therefore_o say_v they_o man_n must_v doubt_v of_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n but_o this_o have_v no_o more_o pith_n or_o marrow_n in_o it_o then_o the_o former_a why_o may_v we_o not_o as_o safe_o allege_v it_o for_o free_a will_n and_o power_n not_o only_o to_o do_v christ_n now_o what_o word_n be_v there_o in_o this_o text_n that_o will_v imply_v doubt_v if_o it_o be_v any_o it_o be_v fear_n and_o tremble_a but_o they_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v already_o import_v no_o such_o matter_n but_o rather_o signify_v reverence_n of_o god_n and_o a_o certain_a kind_n of_o childlike_a awe_n and_o loathsomnes_n to_o offend_v or_o displease_v so_o gracious_a a_o father_n as_o our_o heavenly_a father_n be_v i_o think_v we_o may_v well_o expound_v this_o place_n by_o a_o sentence_n of_o the_o prophet_n psal_n 2._o where_o he_o say_v serve_v the_o lord_n in_o fear_n and_o rejoice_v before_o he_o in_o tremble_v what_o do_v he_o mean_v thereby_o doubt_v no_o sure_o for_o the_o apostle_n james_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o that_o waver_v or_o doubt_v receive_v nothing_o believe_v also_o yea_o and_o enjoy_v comfort_n and_o consolation_n to_o according_a as_o they_o respect_v either_o themselves_o or_o god_n or_o consider_v in_o god_n a_o supreme_a majesty_n which_o may_v cause_v they_o to_o fear_n or_o tremble_v or_o behold_v in_o he_o largeness_n in_o promise_n &_o faithfulness_n in_o perform_v and_o so_o not_o only_o believe_v in_o he_o but_o rejoice_v also_o in_o a_o word_n the_o apostle_n mind_v not_o to_o command_v man_n to_o doubt_v of_o god_n grace_n &_o their_o own_o salvation_n for_o that_o have_v be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o truth_n that_o he_o have_v in_o other_o place_n deliver_v and_o all_o come_n from_o one_o spirit_n and_o the_o same_o
so_o fall_v out_o that_o he_o have_v some_o hide_a or_o unknown_a sin_n through_o which_o he_o have_v displease_v god_n but_o no_o man_n know_v or_o understand_v all_o his_o sin_n &_o this_o assumption_n they_o prove_v by_o a_o place_n of_o the_o prophet_n psal_n 19_o where_o he_o say_v who_o can_v understand_v hiâ—_n fault_n therefore_o no_o man_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o be_v in_o their_o purpose_n because_o remission_n of_o sin_n &_o the_o comfort_n follow_v thereupon_o against_o the_o doubtfulness_n of_o our_o heart_n stand_v not_o in_o know_v or_o feel_v all_o and_o every_o particular_a or_o special_a sin_n that_o man_n have_v commit_v but_o in_o the_o lively_a apprehension_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n declare_v in_o the_o heavenly_a promise_n of_o his_o word_n not_o impute_v unto_o we_o our_o transgression_n nay_o which_o be_v more_o impute_v unto_o we_o through_o faith_n that_o take_v hold_v thereof_o the_o innocency_n holiness_n &_o obedience_n confirm_v that_o which_o never_o be_v controvert_v for_o who_o ever_o call_v this_o into_o question_n that_o good_a man_n may_v &_o do_v commit_v infinite_a more_o sin_n than_o they_o do_v or_o can_v remember_v but_o this_o rather_o whether_o this_o effect_n of_o doubt_v will_v follow_v thereupon_o in_o which_o they_o be_v more_o mute_a than_o fish_n &_o speak_v where_o or_o what_o they_o shall_v not_o might_n well_o have_v spare_v this_o labour_n 2_o a_o second_o argument_n they_o frame_v thus_o he_o that_o only_o know_v the_o heart_n he_o only_o know_v the_o certety_n &_o assurednes_n of_o our_o salvation_n but_o god_n only_o know_v the_o heart_n &_o search_v the_o reins_n therefore_o he_o only_o know_v the_o certainty_n and_o assuredness_n of_o our_o salvation_n all_o the_o fear_n &_o strength_n of_o this_o reason_n rest_v in_o the_o mayor_n or_o proposition_n as_o we_o call_v it_o &_o in_o the_o large_a or_o narrow_a signification_n of_o this_o word_n knower_n of_o the_o heart_n wherefore_o have_v answer_v or_o satisfy_v that_o all_o the_o rest_n will_v be_v find_v weak_a than_o water_n i_o mean_v for_o the_o strength_n and_o maintenance_n of_o this_o matter_n god_n be_v so_o the_o only_a searcher_n and_o knower_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o yet_o notwistand_v he_o have_v in_o some_o measure_n even_o communicate_v that_o grace_n unto_o diverse_a of_o his_o child_n though_o happy_o not_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o other_o so_o much_o yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o every_o particular_a faithful_a man_n own_o estate_n for_o as_o this_o that_o god_n be_v only_o wise_a only_o just_a etc._n etc._n do_v not_o evacuate_v or_o overthrow_v the_o wisdom_n justice_n etc._n etc._n that_o from_o that_o infinite_a fountain_n that_o be_v in_o he_o be_v convey_v over_o unto_o man_n special_o his_o child_n so_o that_o he_o alone_o know_v man_n heart_n hinder_v not_o this_o but_o that_o other_o man_n may_v know_v though_o not_o other_o man_n yet_o their_o own_o heart_n reasonable_a well_o for_o this_o of_o search_v the_o heart_n be_v as_o also_o the_o former_a above_o name_v be_v of_o that_o sort_n of_o attribute_n in_o or_o to_o god_n which_o though_o they_o be_v in_o he_o in_o all_o absolute_a fullness_n and_o without_o measure_n yet_o be_v they_o communicate_v to_o the_o godly_a especial_o and_o that_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o he_o see_v to_o be_v fit_a for_o they_o and_o yet_o he_o have_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o in_o himself_o and_o this_o be_v that_o in_o some_o sort_n and_o sense_n which_o solomon_n say_v in_o the_o proverbe_n the_o thought_n of_o man_n heart_n be_v as_o deep_a fountain_n but_o a_o man_n of_o understanding_n will_v draw_v they_o dry_a but_o more_o plain_o and_o particular_o the_o apostle_n say_v no_o man_n know_v the_o thing_n of_o a_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n which_o be_v within_o himself_o but_o god_n spirit_n make_v the_o spiritual_a man_n able_a to_o judge_v and_o discern_v all_o thing_n yet_o he_o himself_o to_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o mayor_n proposition_n be_v not_o simple_a here_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v understand_v with_o a_o condition_n or_o exception_n thus_o he_o that_o alone_o be_v the_o knower_n of_o the_o heart_n yea_o of_o all_o thing_n he_o only_o be_v assure_v or_o certain_o know_v our_o salvation_n unless_o it_o have_v please_v he_o in_o his_o word_n to_o reveal_v something_o concern_v that_o unto_o we_o and_o will_v have_v we_o thereby_o to_o be_v assure_v thereof_o for_o then_o have_v communicate_v that_o knowledge_n which_o in_o himself_o be_v
as_o unto_o a_o menstruous_a and_o pollute_a thing_n depart_v hence_o and_o get_v away_o 4_o in_o the_o four_o place_n they_o reason_n thus_o s._n paul_n say_v 1._o corinth_n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o yet_o be_o i_o not_o thereby_o justify_v for_o he_o that_o judge_v i_o be_v the_o lord_n therefore_o paul_n be_v not_o assure_v concern_v his_o own_o justification_n but_o hereunto_o case_n yet_o be_v not_o always_o good_a no_o not_o in_o good_a man_n because_o now_o we_o may_v say_v even_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o a_o other_o place_n &_o another_o case_n also_o we_o know_v no_o more_o now_o after_o the_o flesh_n no_o not_o christ_n jesus_n and_o when_o they_o be_v at_o the_o best_a and_o high_a they_o be_v rather_o argument_n of_o persuasion_n to_o lead_v man_n to_o do_v the_o like_a then_o sound_a &_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o prove_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o be_v allege_v but_o we_o will_v let_v this_o also_o go_v &_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v of_o more_o weight_n and_o importance_n as_o for_o this_o argument_n if_o we_o know_v or_o understand_v right_o what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o these_o word_n it_o be_v or_o will_v be_v easy_o absolve_v for_o the_o knot_n be_v not_o so_o hard_o twist_v or_o tie_v as_o they_o imagine_v it_o seem_v unto_o man_n that_o as_o verse_n 1._o of_o the_o 4._o chap._n he_o have_v put_v the_o people_n in_o mind_n of_o their_o duty_n towards_o their_o minister_n namely_o that_o though_o they_o may_v not_o account_v they_o lord_n and_o ruler_n yet_o they_o shall_v esteem_v they_o as_o such_o who_o christ_n have_v send_v even_o by_o their_o hand_n to_o deliver_v unto_o they_o the_o treasure_n &_o hide_a secret_n of_o god_n kingdom_n and_o salvation_n so_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o have_v tell_v the_o minister_n &_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v their_o duty_n namely_o that_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o their_o charge_n they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o not_o as_o lord_n but_o as_o servant_n yea_o as_o faithful_a servant_n who_o must_v one_o day_n render_v a_o account_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o because_o he_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o their_o own_o brain_n and_o understanding_n it_o ought_v to_o be_v account_v of_o no_o great_a weight_n then_o if_o ignorant_a man_n shall_v take_v upon_o they_o to_o judge_v of_o learning_n and_o wisdom_n or_o of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n &_o this_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o verse_n 3._o the_o second_o be_v take_v from_o his_o own_o person_n and_o they_o together_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v how_o be_v you_o able_a to_o judge_v what_o manner_n of_o man_n i_o be_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o my_o ministry_n since_o i_o myself_o can_v not_o judge_v he_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v not_o able_a thorough_o and_o exact_o to_o discern_v himself_o must_v he_o therefore_o doubt_v of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o salvation_n before_o god_n sure_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v for_o first_o beside_o that_o god_n and_o man_n differ_v it_o be_v not_o safe_a to_o infer_v upon_o a_o godly_a man_n debase_v of_o himself_o for_o some_o respect_n before_o man_n his_o doubt_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n or_o his_o distrustfulness_n of_o his_o mercy_n towards_o he_o many_o a_o man_n debase_v himself_o before_o god_n and_o accept_v it_o rather_o notwithstanding_o our_o weakness_n and_o want_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o remainder_n of_o our_o corruption_n adjoin_v thereto_o as_o for_o the_o explanation_n or_o exposition_n follow_v it_o have_v receive_v a_o full_a answer_n before_o and_o therefore_o we_o let_v it_o pass_v and_o come_v to_o a_o second_o exception_n that_o they_o make_v against_o this_o truth_n thus_o we_o be_v not_o sure_o say_v they_o whether_o we_o perform_v these_o condition_n that_o be_v whether_o we_o sufficient_o repent_v we_o of_o our_o sin_n or_o do_v sufficient_o believe_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o that_o we_o be_v not_o assure_v concern_v god_n promise_n but_o this_o we_o answer_v be_v the_o same_o poison_n that_o have_v be_v propound_v in_o some_o of_o their_o argument_n before_o put_v down_o and_o answer_v whether_o we_o may_v remit_v the_o reader_n how_o be_v it_o in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o we_o will_v say_v somewhat_o and_o first_o we_o give_v they_o to_o understand_v that_o their_o consequent_a be_v good_a &_o and_z forcible_a if_o they_o have_v prove_v or_o can_v prove_v that_o the_o truth_n &_o certainty_n of_o god_n holy_a and_o heavenly_a promise_n do_v depend_v upon_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o our_o faith_n &_o repentance_n but_o that_o be_v not_o prove_v be_v of_o no_o importance_n nay_o we_o say_v further_o that_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v because_o god_n in_o his_o word_n have_v not_o prescribe_v a_o limit_a and_o determine_v measure_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n which_o whosoever_o have_v not_o attain_v unto_o he_o can_v be_v certify_v or_o assure_v of_o god_n grace_n and_o his_o own_o salvation_n but_o therein_o only_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n faith_n and_o repentance_n both_o which_o grace_n as_o all_o other_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o some_o more_o and_o in_o some_o less_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n thereof_o give_v unto_o man_n from_o god_n and_o this_o may_v appear_v because_o christ_n simple_o and_o plain_o say_v he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o have_v everlasting_a life_n not_o express_v how_o much_o or_o how_o little_a faith_n be_v requisite_a to_o that_o work_n so_o it_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a and_o we_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o scripture_n to_o pray_v for_o augmentation_n and_o increase_n of_o faith_n and_o to_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v build_v up_o therein_o and_o so_o proceed_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n etc._n etc._n so_o may_v we_o yea_o so_o ought_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o increase_v of_o repentance_n &_o other_o fruit_n &_o of_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o when_o we_o have_v attain_v through_o god_n goodness_n towards_o we_o a_o good_a measure_n yet_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o lack_n and_o what_o can_v be_v more_o plain_a then_o that_o christ_n say_v to_o the_o woman_n luke_n 7._o thy_n say_v have_v save_v thou_o although_o we_o doubt_v not_o the_o place_n and_o circumstance_n of_o it_o consider_v to_o affirm_v that_o she_o have_v not_o sufficient_a either_o faith_n or_o repentance_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o conclude_v that_o though_o we_o believe_v weakelie_o yet_o so_o it_o be_v true_o and_o right_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v we_o for_o jesus_n christ_n sake_n &_o we_o make_v partaker_n of_o all_o the_o fruit_n and_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n beside_o what_o a_o absurdity_n will_v follow_v this_o conceit_n of_o sufficiency_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n for_o since_o no_o man_n live_v can_v either_o sufficient_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o his_o sin_n or_o make_v any_o answer_n or_o satisfaction_n unto_o god_n for_o they_o or_o sure_o determine_v concern_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o repentance_n because_o god_n have_v reveal_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o his_o word_n and_o to_o fetch_v it_o from_o his_o own_o head_n or_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v fit_a for_o that_o be_v deep_a and_o deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o no_o man_n shall_v hope_v for_o salvation_n but_o rather_o despair_v of_o it_o which_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v absurd_a be_v both_o ungodly_a and_o uncomfortable_a also_o but_o if_o they_o will_v yet_o further_o object_n and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o repent_v and_o believe_v or_o else_o whether_o he_o ascribe_v unto_o himself_o the_o thing_n he_o have_v not_o we_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v a_o untrue_a assertion_n to_o say_v that_o no_o man_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o repent_v believe_v etc._n etc._n for_o though_o the_o scripture_n have_v not_o teach_v we_o to_o know_v whether_o our_o faith_n be_v sufficient_a or_o our_o repentance_n weighty_a enough_o yet_o have_v it_o give_v we_o certain_a infallible_a note_n by_o which_o we_o may_v discern_v and_o judge_v of_o the_o sincerity_n and_o truth_n both_o of_o our_o faith_n and_o repentance_n for_o as_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n general_o be_v sure_a seal_n and_o pledge_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v in_o we_o and_o more_o particular_o our_o holy_a prayer_n to_o god_n according_a to_o that_o which_o be_v say_v rom._n 10._o how_o shall_v they_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o they_o believe_v not_o so_o in_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n follow_v our_o repentance_n seal_v up_o also_o the_o sincerity_n and_o soundness_n thereof_o in_o our_o several_a soul_n now_o what_o these_o be_v we_o may_v see_v large_o recite_v 2._o cor._n 7._o as_o great_a care_n clear_v of_o ourselves_o indignation_n fear_n desire_v zeal_n revenge_n etc._n etc._n certainty_n concern_v god_n grace_n and_o our_o own_o eternal_a salvation_n and_o also_o know_v and_o feel_v that_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o mercy_n from_o god_n it_o hold_v the_o same_o fast_o and_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o ignorant_a of_o this_o neither_o that_o many_o time_n it_o be_v very_o infirm_a &_o weak_a then_o especial_o when_o many_o sore_a doubt_n do_v toss_v and_o turmoil_v yea_o make_v weary_a our_o faint_a mind_n which_o doubt_v indeed_o be_v not_o from_o faith_n neither_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n but_o flow_v from_o the_o flesh_n of_o our_o old_a adam_n in_o we_o which_o point_n if_o we_o know_v well_o we_o shall_v be_v make_v able_a the_o better_a and_o more_o easy_o to_o clear_v and_o void_a this_o point_n but_o yet_o they_o persist_v and_o say_v that_o epicure_n and_o profane_a man_n even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o iniquity_n may_v suppose_v that_o they_o have_v such_o a_o persuasion_n of_o certainty_n &_o assurance_n but_o we_o tell_v they_o first_o that_o our_o question_n of_o true_a faith_n and_o of_o they_o that_o do_v indeed_o believe_v and_o not_o of_o epicure_n and_o profane_a person_n or_o of_o a_o dead_a faith_n which_o many_o hypocrite_n yea_o devil_n may_v have_v as_o s._n james_n plain_o show_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o do_v evil_a and_o miss_v the_o mark_n when_o they_o compare_v not_o only_o diverse_a but_o contrary_a both_o man_n and_o matter_n together_o second_o that_o we_o be_v hartilye_o sorry_a for_o their_o blindness_n and_o ignorance_n that_o can_v as_o yet_o make_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o imagination_n and_o conceit_n of_o the_o wicked_a which_o common_o breed_v and_o bring_v forth_o in_o they_o senseless_a and_o carelessness_n and_o the_o persuasion_n of_o the_o godly_a which_o as_o they_o work_v comfort_n for_o the_o sin_n already_o past_a so_o do_v they_o breed_v care_n of_o conversation_n for_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v three_o we_o say_v that_o howsoever_o the_o world_n may_v fantasy_n and_o imagine_v some_o such_o matter_n yet_o they_o can_v feel_v it_o or_o be_v indeed_o thorough_o persuade_v of_o it_o not_o only_o because_o god_n say_v by_o the_o prophet_n there_o be_v no_o peace_n to_o the_o wicked_a who_o be_v like_o the_o rage_a sea_n that_o can_v not_o rest_v who_o water_n cast_v up_o mire_n and_o dirt_n but_o also_o because_o want_v faith_n without_o which_o also_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n they_o must_v lack_v this_o effect_n of_o it_o even_o the_o quiet_a fruit_n of_o righteousness_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n before_o god_n and_o man_n but_o let_v we_o proceed_v to_o some_o further_a exception_n they_o make_v against_o this_o truth_n some_o of_o they_o say_v that_o be_v not_o present_o perform_v which_o be_v promise_v therefore_o from_o this_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v we_o salvation_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o we_o present_o lie_v hold_v thereon_o and_o therefore_o we_o can_v from_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o concern_v our_o salvation_n conclude_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v sure_o concern_v it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v already_o accomplish_v and_o perform_v there_o be_v many_o thing_n to_o be_v say_v to_o this_o exception_n or_o objection_n we_o deny_v not_o this_o that_o god_n do_v not_o always_o present_o perform_v the_o thing_n he_o have_v promise_v in_o the_o memory_n and_o sight_n of_o they_o to_o throw_v we_o down_o to_o damnation_n no_o very_o satan_n indeed_o set_v they_o before_o we_o to_o that_o purpose_n but_o god_n do_v it_o to_o humble_v we_o in_o ourselves_o before_o he_o and_o to_o add_v a_o edge_n unto_o our_o supplication_n and_o prayer_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v more_o pierce_a than_o otherwise_o and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o paul_n who_o say_v of_o himself_o that_o lest_o he_o shall_v be_v puff_v up_o through_o abundance_n or_o excellency_n of_o revelation_n there_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o a_o prick_n in_o the_o flesh_n and_o satan_n as_o a_o angel_n to_o buffet_v he_o and_o for_o the_o remove_n of_o they_o he_o pray_v the_o lord_n thrice_o &_o yet_o receive_v no_o other_o answer_n but_o this_o god_n grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o he_o and_o the_o lord_n strength_n shall_v be_v perfect_v through_o man_n weakness_n yea_o this_o be_v that_o that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o his_o own_o name_n and_o of_o himself_o as_o also_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o regenerate_a and_o of_o they_o rom._n 7._o saying_n i_o alone_o not_o that_o which_o i_o do_v for_o what_o i_o will_v that_o do_v i_o not_o but_o what_o i_o hate_v that_o do_v i_o if_o i_o do_v then_o that_o i_o will_v not_o i_o consent_v to_o the_o law_n that_o it_o be_v good_a howbeit_o it_o be_v no_o more_o i_o that_o do_v it_o but_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o i_o for_o this_o i_o be_o sure_a of_o that_o in_o i_o that_o be_v in_o my_o flesh_n dwell_v no_o good_a thing_n for_o though_o to_o will_v be_v present_a with_o i_o yet_o i_o find_v no_o mean_n in_o myself_o to_o perform_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o in_o this_o notable_a discourse_n he_o hold_v on_o even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o chap._n which_o i_o will_v entreat_v the_o godly_a reader_n careful_o to_o to_o view_v and_o think_v upon_o for_o sure_o he_o shall_v find_v there_o much_o tend_v to_o the_o answer_v of_o this_o temptation_n and_o to_o the_o same_o end_n he_o say_v gal._n 5._o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v one_o contrary_a one_o to_o another_o so_o that_o you_o can_v do_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v to_o all_o which_o we_o may_v add_v for_o the_o further_a satisfaction_n of_o this_o doubt_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o the_o stop_n of_o satan_n mouth_n if_o it_o may_v be_v that_o these_o our_o sin_n whether_o they_o be_v original_a or_o actual_a past_a or_o present_a many_o or_o few_o come_v not_o into_o account_n or_o reckon_n before_o god_n neither_o be_v they_o neither_o shall_v be_v lay_v unto_o our_o charge_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o they_o be_v omit_v through_o the_o death_n and_o obedience_n of_o christ_n i_o be_o now_o through_o god_n goodness_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n incorporate_v as_o it_o be_v into_o his_o body_n and_o be_v come_v flesh_n of_o his_o flesh_n and_o bone_n of_o his_o bone_n yea_o as_o i_o may_v say_v make_v one_o with_o he_o so_o that_o now_o this_o great_a grace_n be_v bestow_v upon_o i_o and_o i_o have_v that_o precious_a gift_n of_o faith_n wrought_v in_o i_o to_o apply_v it_o to_o myself_o the_o lord_n can_v or_o will_v no_o more_o refuse_v or_o condemn_v then_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o which_o i_o think_v the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o these_o notable_a and_o comfortable_a speech_n namely_o ephâ—sians_n the_o four_o by_o christ_n all_o the_o whole_a body_n be_v couple_v and_o knit_v together_o by_o every_o joint_a for_o the_o furniture_n thereof_o according_a to_o the_o effectual_a power_n which_o be_v in_o the_o measure_n of_o every_o part_n receive_v increase_v of_o of_o the_o
therefore_o or_o fruit_n of_o my_o faith_n will_v i_o gather_v this_o truth_n against_o thou_o to_o the_o stay_n &_o uphold_v of_o my_o own_o heart_n and_o first_o because_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o infallible_a testimony_n that_o it_o yield_v unto_o my_o heart_n be_v a_o principal_o prop_n and_o stay_n unto_o i_o i_o tell_v thou_o satan_n that_o even_o that_o shall_v testify_v unto_o my_o spirit_n that_o i_o be_o god_n child_n and_o dare_v thereupon_o without_o fear_n or_o tremble_a call_v upon_o he_o and_o say_v abba_n o_o father_n by_o which_o i_o perceive_v i_o do_v believe_v for_o otherwise_o how_o can_v i_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o i_o believe_v not_o and_o assure_o know_v that_o i_o have_v faith_n because_o i_o stay_v myself_o whole_o and_o only_o upon_o he_o say_v unto_o he_o in_o some_o sort_n and_o sense_n as_o the_o prophet_n david_n say_v lord_n who_o have_v i_o in_o heaven_n but_o thou_o and_o in_o earth_n i_o desire_v none_o with_o thou_o and_o lest_o satan_n shall_v think_v i_o do_v this_o without_o warrant_n or_o reason_n i_o will_v not_o fear_v or_o be_v ashamed_a to_o set_v down_o my_o ground_n out_o of_o the_o word_n how_o comfortable_a be_v this_o say_n of_o the_o apostle_n roman_n 8._o we_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n to_o fear_v again_o but_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereby_o we_o cry_v as_o with_o boldness_n so_o with_o earnestness_n father_n father_n the_o same_o spirit_n witness_v with_o our_o spirit_n that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n if_o child_n than_o heir_n also_o etc._n etc._n to_o the_o same_o end_n tend_v that_o of_o 1._o cor._n 2._o where_o he_o say_v we_o have_v receive_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n but_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v of_o god_n that_o by_o it_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n and_o though_o this_o be_v sufficient_a and_o indeed_o great_a than_o all_o exception_n yet_o have_v we_o beside_o the_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n frame_v we_o and_o fashion_v we_o to_o sound_v conversion_n before_o god_n and_o to_o the_o yield_a orbr_v out_o of_o the_o sincere_a fruit_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v to_o say_v good_a work_n which_o can_v but_o assure_v i_o of_o my_o salvation_n and_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o confirm_v i_o in_o the_o certain_a hope_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o saint_n peter_n provoke_v unto_o when_o he_o say_v brethren_n g_o we_o diligence_n by_o good_a work_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a for_o if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v because_o by_o this_o mean_v a_o entry_n shall_v be_v minister_v unto_o you_o abundant_o into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o our_o lord_n &_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o this_o truth_n we_o have_v further_o this_o double_a reason_n if_o that_o which_o be_v from_o ourselves_o as_o for_o example_n our_o sin_n may_v just_o move_v and_o make_v doubt_v why_o shall_v not_o that_o which_o be_v from_o god_n as_o for_o example_n the_o fruit_n of_o our_o unfeigned_a faith_n and_o obedience_n ministet_fw-la hope_n and_o assurance_n god_n i_o be_o sure_a be_v great_a than_o man_n and_o his_o grace_n much_o more_o excellent_a then_o man_n infirmity_n be_v base_a and_o vile_a and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o true_a how_o shall_v we_o that_o carry_v god_n heavenly_a treasure_n in_o earthen_a vessel_n conceive_v hope_n of_o profit_v by_o they_o in_o ourselves_o or_o of_o do_v good_a with_o they_o unto_o other_o but_o we_o be_v assure_v of_o the_o one_o &_o the_o other_o notwithstanding_o our_o weakness_n and_o want_n therefore_o we_o must_v also_o conceive_v hope_n of_o the_o former_a &_o indeed_o assure_v our_o heart_n therein_o again_o why_o do_v christ_n dwell_v in_o our_o heart_n by_o faith_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o ephesian_n it_o be_v to_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v be_v idle_a in_o we_o no_o very_o satan_n when_o he_o possess_v man_n will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v idle_a much_o less_o jesus_n christ_n but_o provoke_v they_o still_o to_o honest_a labour_n and_o good_a work_n for_o by_o his_o spiritual_a power_n he_o manife_v his_o own_o strength_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o our_o manifold_a weakness_n now_o if_o that_o be_v true_a than_o this_o ensue_v thereupon_o that_o i_o be_o christ_n and_o christ_n be_v i_o as_o the_o church_n &_o faithful_a soul_n sing_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o canticle_n yea_o he_o himself_o with_o all_o his_o grace_n and_o merit_n whatsoever_o so_o that_o he_o which_o feel_v and_o find_v these_o effect_n in_o himself_o can_v not_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n infer_v thereupon_o that_o he_o have_v faith_n and_o that_o therefore_o he_o have_v christ_n in_o he_o in_o this_o life_n make_v he_o fruitful_a unto_o all_o good_a work_n and_o seal_v up_o unto_o he_o &_o in_o he_o salvation_n &_o everlasting_a life_n in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v unless_o that_o he_o will_v imagine_v that_o christ_n can_v be_v idlye_o or_o without_o fruit_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n which_o be_v blasphemy_n and_o yet_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o assure_v hereof_o because_o true_a faith_n indeed_o can_v no_o more_o be_v sunder_v from_o good_a work_n which_o be_v the_o sound_a fruit_n thereof_o then_o light_a from_o the_o sun_n or_o heat_n from_o the_o fire_n or_o if_o you_o will_v the_o shadow_n from_o a_o natural_a body_n but_o yet_o satan_n will_v except_v against_o this_o this_o faith_n of_o thou_o which_o thou_o speak_v of_o and_o these_o fruit_n of_o it_o that_o thou_o mention_v they_o be_v imperfect_a they_o be_v faint_a and_o few_o yea_o they_o seldom_o or_o very_o rare_o appear_v or_o be_v see_v what_o then_o satan_n grant_v that_o my_o faith_n and_o good_a work_n be_v faint_a and_o few_o in_o i_o will_v thou_o infer_v that_o therefore_o i_o have_v none_o that_o be_v against_o all_o reason_n and_o religion_n in_o reason_n he_o that_o have_v but_o a_o sick_a pine_a or_o languish_v life_n live_v still_o and_o in_o hope_n of_o the_o better_n of_o his_o estate_n either_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o world_n if_o god_n will_v or_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v especial_o and_o why_o shall_v not_o this_o in_o measure_n and_o manner_n be_v true_a as_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o spiritual_a life_n here_o in_o religion_n we_o know_v that_o god_n accept_v both_o the_o whole_a church_n &_o the_o several_a member_n of_o it_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v not_o provide_v always_o that_o that_o which_o they_o have_v they_o have_v it_o from_o he_o or_o else_o how_o can_v the_o church_n &_o member_n of_o it_o rejoice_v or_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v and_o from_o hence_o be_v it_o indeed_o that_o we_o learn_v notwithstanding_o weakness_n &_o want_n either_o in_o whole_a congregation_n or_o several_a member_n not_o to_o break_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o band_n of_o peace_n nor_o to_o forsake_v the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o brethren_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o church_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o n_o holy_a wisdom_n and_o power_n from_o above_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o our_o persuasion_n but_o in_o our_o practice_n not_o forsake_v the_o good_a of_o our_o god_n for_o some_o evil_n or_o corruption_n of_o man_n adjoin_v therewithal_o nor_o yet_o for_o the_o good_n sake_n justify_v or_o approve_v the_o evil_a and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o sufficient_a yet_o we_o have_v further_a prop_n to_o our_o faith_n here_o namely_o first_o that_o though_o our_o faith_n be_v weak_a and_o faint_a yet_o be_v it_o true_a and_o sound_a for_o even_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v infirm_a and_o weak_a may_v yet_o notwitstanding_n be_v true_a &_o right_a the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o not_o weak_a faith_n and_o true_a faith_n be_v opposite_a but_o weak_a faith_n and_o no_o faith_n and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v also_o by_o the_o worthy_a speech_n of_o the_o father_n of_o the_o sick_a child_n in_o the_o gospel_n lord_n i_o believe_v but_o help_v thou_o my_o unbelief_n this_o weakness_n &_o imperfection_n our_o faith_n not_o come_v from_o itself_o nor_o be_v in_o itself_o as_o of_o itself_o for_o so_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a and_o a_o absolute_a work_n of_o god_n but_o as_o it_o be_v intermingle_v with_o the_o remainder_n of_o our_o unbelieve_a heart_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o faintness_n and_o weakness_n of_o it_o may_v no_o less_o effectual_o
apostle_n my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o &_o my_o strength_n shall_v be_v persect_v through_o weakness_n and_o why_o shall_v i_o make_v any_o doubt_n of_o this_o since_o god_n election_n which_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o mutable_a purpose_n and_o decree_n of_o god_n be_v always_o firm_a and_o sure_a and_o since_o the_o word_n not_o of_o man_n but_o of_o god_n assure_v i_o that_o those_o who_o the_o lord_n love_v even_o unto_o the_o end_n he_o love_v they_o &_o since_o that_o he_o that_o be_v for_o we_o &_o with_o we_o &_o within_o we_o be_v strong_a and_o great_a than_o al._n and_o since_o even_o the_o very_a article_n of_o our_o faith_n teach_v we_o to_o believe_v as_o the_o father_n to_o be_v almighty_a who_o power_n no_o creature_n be_v able_a to_o withstand_v so_o jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v our_o lord_n into_o who_o hand_n since_o the_o father_n have_v eve_v we_o we_o be_v sure_o no_o adversary_n power_n shall_v pull_v we_o out_o of_o the_o same_o for_o he_o also_o be_v not_o only_o constant_a and_o firm_a as_o the_o father_n but_o almighty_a also_o and_o that_o salvation_n which_o he_o have_v wrought_v for_o i_o through_o his_o blood_n and_o enable_v i_o in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o apply_v unto_o my_o own_o heart_n he_o will_v preserve_v and_o uphold_v in_o i_o together_o with_o the_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o perseveraunce_n so_o that_o not_o fall_v even_o unto_o the_o end_n and_o in_o the_o end_n wherein_o i_o be_o the_o more_o settle_a &_o confirm_v not_o only_o by_o this_o that_o he_o deal_v not_o with_o his_o servant_n as_o man_n do_v who_o begin_v and_o leave_v of_o in_o the_o turn_n of_o a_o hand_n or_o the_o twinkle_n of_o a_o eye_n but_o look_v what_o work_n he_o begin_v in_o his_o he_o perfect_v the_o same_o neither_o yet_o by_o this_o that_o he_o have_v give_v i_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o servant_n gracious_a promise_n as_o that_o he_o will_v be_v with_o we_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n that_o his_o spirit_n shall_v bring_v unto_o our_o remembrance_n the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a word_n of_o truth_n and_o life_n but_o also_o by_o this_o that_o he_o have_v gracious_o perform_v it_o unto_o his_o servant_n not_o only_o uphold_v they_o that_o they_o have_v not_o be_v carry_v away_o either_o with_o the_o sway_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n or_o strength_n of_o corruption_n in_o themselves_o but_o even_o then_o when_o they_o have_v be_v fall_v in_o raise_v they_o up_o again_o as_o we_o see_v particular_o in_o david_n who_o confess_v of_o himself_o and_o in_o himself_o that_o to_o be_v true_a through_o god_n goodness_n thou_o have_v deliver_v my_o soul_n from_o death_n my_o eye_n from_o tear_n and_o my_o foot_n from_o fall_v psalm_n 116._o and_o likewise_o in_o peter_n who_o though_o our_o saviour_n christ_n foretell_v of_o satan_n malice_n against_o he_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faithful_a under_o this_o metaphorical_a or_o borrow_a term_n of_o desire_v to_o winnowe_v they_o as_o man_n do_v winnowe_v wheat_n yet_o do_v withal_o most_o comfortable_o tell_v he_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faithful_a in_o he_o i_o have_v pray_v for_o thou_o that_o thy_o faith_n fail_v not_o wherefore_o when_o thou_o be_v convert_v strengthen_v thy_o brethren_n and_o what_o though_o other_o in_o outward_a show_n far_o better_o and_o more_o strong_a than_o myself_o have_v fall_v away_o do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v that_o i_o shall_v do_v so_o likewise_o i_o tell_v thou_o no_o satan_n god_n be_v above_o all_o law_n and_o therefore_o beyond_o all_o example_n and_o what_o if_o god_n to_o let_v proud_a flesh_n and_o blood_n understande_v that_o they_o stand_v not_o by_o themselves_o will_v make_v some_o fearful_a example_n of_o human_a universal_a course_n or_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o god_n for_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o they_o that_o be_v feeble_a and_o weak_a heart_a and_o hand_v in_o zion_n will_v make_v the_o mean_a of_o his_o servant_n most_o worthy_a instrument_n to_o manifest_a his_o strength_n in_o their_o own_o weakness_n will_v thou_o cross_v his_o purpose_n who_o power_n no_o creature_n be_v able_a to_o resist_v and_o dare_v thou_o discomfort_v where_o god_n go_v about_o to_o give_v all_o consolation_n yea_o such_o comfort_n as_o no_o man_n can_v give_v but_o he_o and_o none_o can_v have_v but_o those_o that_o belong_v unto_o he_o over_o and_o beside_o all_o this_o god_n in_o his_o word_n have_v give_v i_o other_o strong_a consolation_n against_o this_o temptation_n or_o assault_n of_o thou_o for_o in_o the_o second_o epistle_n of_o timothy_n and_o the_o second_o chapter_n against_o the_o back_n slide_v and_o fall_v away_o of_o other_o he_o give_v i_o these_o two_o special_a comfort_n namely_o that_o the_o elect_v of_o which_o number_n i_o be_o one_o be_v out_o of_o all_o danger_n of_o any_o such_o fall_v away_o and_o again_o that_o such_o hypocritical_a backslider_n be_v know_v to_o god_n and_o not_o to_o we_o when_o he_o say_v the_o strong_a foundation_n of_o god_n remain_v sure_a have_v this_o seal_n the_o lord_n know_v who_o be_v he_o and_o in_o the_o second_o chapter_n of_o saint_n johns_n first_o epistle_n the_o holy_a ghost_n labour_v the_o same_o point_n that_o so_o in_o the_o mouth_n of_o two_o or_o three_o witness_n this_o as_o all_o other_o truth_n may_v be_v establish_v and_o make_v sure_a and_o give_v sundry_a consolation_n against_o it_o as_o first_o that_o none_o shall_v be_v terrify_v or_o offend_v with_o their_o fault_n because_o though_o such_o have_v or_o may_v have_v a_o place_n in_o the_o church_n yet_o be_v they_o never_o of_o the_o church_n because_o the_o church_n be_v the_o company_n of_o the_o elect_a which_o can_v perish_v and_o therefore_o also_o can_v fall_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n second_o because_o they_o be_v anoint_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n not_o only_o with_o true_a knowledge_n of_o salvation_n and_o eternal_a life_n but_o with_o all_o other_o grace_n from_o the_o same_o and_o namely_o with_o the_o gift_n of_o perseverance_n but_o his_o own_o word_n be_v most_o excellent_a and_o therefore_o let_v we_o mark_v they_o they_o go_v out_o from_o we_o say_v he_o but_o they_o be_v not_o of_o we_o for_o if_o they_o have_v be_v of_o we_o they_o shall_v have_v continue_v with_o us._n but_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o it_o may_v appear_v that_o they_o be_v not_o all_o of_o we_o but_o you_o have_v a_o ointment_n from_o the_o holy_a one_o and_o know_v all_o thing_n and_o now_o with_o what_o reason_n or_o face_n can_v irefuse_v this_o truth_n of_o god_n so_o plain_o and_o plentiful_o propound_v and_o embrace_v the_o lie_n of_o satan_n i_o tell_v thou_o i_o can_v fall_v away_o from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n nor_o fall_n away_o from_o the_o faith_n that_o he_o have_v plant_v in_o i_o unless_o i_o will_v make_v god_n a_o changeling_n and_o uncertain_a and_o that_o can_v be_v for_o the_o scripture_n tell_v i_o there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o shadow_n of_o turn_v in_o his_o majesty_n which_o yet_o that_o i_o may_v be_v the_o better_o persuade_v thereof_o he_o have_v always_o by_o performance_n show_v himself_o at_o all_o time_n and_o to_o all_o his_o people_n to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o show_v thou_o the_o contrary_a if_o thou_o can_v but_o satan_n further_o press_v this_o temptation_n of_o man_n weakness_n and_o ability_n to_o fall_v away_o from_o the_o act_n indeed_o thereof_o and_o the_o effect_n follow_v from_o the_o same_o say_n after_o this_o sort_n thou_o have_v fall_v diverse_a way_n and_o at_o sundry_a time_n also_o and_o therefore_o have_v lose_v the_o faith_n &_o grace_n that_o god_n give_v thou_o and_o so_o be_v become_v god_n enemy_n and_o how_o can_v thou_o then_o be_v assure_v of_o favour_n at_o his_o hand_n hereunto_o i_o answer_v that_o i_o can_v or_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o i_o have_v fall_v and_o fall_v foul_o yea_o diverse_a way_n and_o sundry_a time_n and_o of_o this_o i_o have_v better_a witness_n than_o thy_o word_n satan_n for_o first_o that_o observation_n of_o my_o own_o way_n that_o god_n of_o his_o grace_n have_v i_o behold_v the_o precious_a gift_n of_o faith_n and_o many_o great_a grace_n of_o god_n for_o my_o exaltation_n and_o therefore_o have_v not_o lose_v as_o thou_o will_v have_v i_o believe_v satan_n
