same_o issue_n before_o mention_v to_o wit_n that_o every_o man_n private_a judgement_n shall_v be_v his_o own_o rule_n and_o then_o will_v it_o consequent_o follow_v that_o quot_fw-la homines_fw-la tot_fw-la sententiae_fw-la we_o shall_v have_v as_o many_o controversy_n touch_v the_o exposition_n of_o the_o father_n as_o we_o have_v already_o about_o the_o interpretation_n of_o the_o scripture_n majesty_n by_o our_o english_a minister_n for_o patronise_a of_o this_o point_n and_o reduce_v of_o all_o both_o scripture_n and_o father_n unto_o the_o examine_v of_o a_o private_a spirit_n i_o have_v diligent_o peruse_v the_o place_n as_o it_o lie_v in_o his_o second_o book_n against_o cresconius_n cap._n 31._o and_o 32._o and_o upon_o a_o exact_a survey_n of_o the_o place_n i_o find_v that_o s._n augustine_n give_v no_o such_o general_a rule_n or_o warrant_v for_o particular_a man_n to_o judge_v of_o the_o father_n write_n and_o citation_n of_o scripture_n use_v by_o they_o but_o only_o in_o the_o case_n and_o cause_n of_o s._n cyprian_n that_o have_v hold_v contrary_a unto_o the_o whole_a church_n viz._n that_o man_n come_v from_o heresy_n be_v to_o be_v rebaptise_v who_o epistle_n also_o be_v urge_v by_o cresconius_n the_o donatist_n against_o s._n augustine_n tamquam_fw-la firmamenta_fw-la canonicae_fw-la veritatis_fw-la as_o ground_n of_o canonical_a truth_n to_o use_v s._n augustine_n his_o word_n i_o say_v upon_o these_o premise_n the_o say_a father_n answer_v thus_o unto_o the_o authority_n of_o s._n cyprian_a object_v that_o in_o a_o manifest_a point_n particular_a doctor_n for_o first_o s._n augustine_n himself_o that_o make_v this_o examine_v of_o scripture_n be_v a_o great_a and_o learned_a doctor_n yea_o one_o of_o the_o great_a that_o ever_o the_o church_n of_o god_n have_v and_o consequent_o be_v personal_o invest_v with_o some_o more_o ecclesiastical_a authority_n than_o every_o ordinary_a protestant_n minister_n second_o he_o perceive_v right_o well_o that_o the_o opinion_n of_o s._n cyprian_n be_v much_o like_o the_o religion_n of_o the_o protestant_n at_o this_o day_n to_o wit_n new_a and_o dissonant_n from_o scripture_n and_o different_a from_o the_o uniform_a consent_n of_o doctor_n expound_v those_o scripture_n not_o receive_v by_o the_o catholic_a church_n nay_o and_o that_o which_o be_v above_o all_o condemn_v by_o the_o church_n three_o s._n augustine_n do_v not_o presume_v upon_o his_o own_o authority_n to_o condemn_v s._n cyprian_n opinion_n as_o dissonant_n from_o the_o scripture_n for_o that_o in_o this_o case_n the_o authority_n of_o s._n cyprian_a may_v seem_v to_o have_v be_v as_o good_a as_o the_o authorty_fw-la of_o s._n augustine_n especial_o have_v seal_v the_o gospel_n with_o his_o blood_n which_o the_o other_o though_o a_o great_a saint_n have_v not_o do_v nor_o be_v put_v unto_o but_o s._n augustine_n find_v s._n cyprian_n his_o opinion_n dissent_v from_o the_o true_a scripture_n exposition_n as_o it_o be_v carry_v along_o by_o the_o most_o holy_a tradition_n of_o catholic_a church_n and_o so_o be_v s._n augustine_n to_o be_v understand_v for_o scripture_n and_o church_n ever_o go_v together_o in_o the_o ancient_a father_n and_o they_o never_o understand_v the_o one_o without_o the_o other_o all_o which_o circumstance_n be_v of_o exceed_a weight_n and_o importance_n in_o this_o case_n about_o which_o notwithstanding_o i_o have_v think_v it_o convenient_a as_o before_o so_o here_o to_o lay_v forth_o some_o further_a and_o particular_a consideration_n the_o first_o consideration_n first_o then_o touch_v the_o different_a esteem_n which_o one_o roman_a catholic_n and_o profess_v protestant_n do_v hold_n of_o unanime_fw-la consent_n of_o ancient_a father_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n which_o be_v the_o first_o point_n here_o touch_v &_o therefore_o of_o we_o in_o the_o first_o place_n to_o be_v discuss_v i_o consider_v yet_o further_o what_o i_o have_v read_v in_o s._n augustine_n concern_v this_o point_n which_o holy_a saint_n and_o great_a doctor_n though_o as_o now_o in_o part_n we_o have_v show_v he_o do_v always_o postpone_v what_o authority_n of_o ancient_a father_n soever_o to_o the_o canonical_a scripture_n &_o all_o particular_a opinion_n of_o some_o one_o or_o few_o unto_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o great_a part_n but_o especial_o unto_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o church_n yet_o be_v the_o same_o father_n so_o respective_a in_o all_o his_o write_n to_o conserve_v the_o reverence_n and_o just_a deserve_a reputation_n of_o these_o great_a saint_n and_o servant_n
