nor_o affliction_n no_o more_o affliction_n or_o if_o their_o joy_n be_v great_a and_o more_o constant_a than_o their_o sorrow_n it_o can_v not_o so_o proper_o be_v call_v a_o sackcloth_n mournful_a their_o joy_n and_o then_o the_o grace_n and_o duty_n suitable_a to_o that_o state_n shall_v be_v in_o exercise_n as_o long-suffering_a patience_n faith_n of_o reliance_n meekness_n watch_v pray_v trouble_n and_o sorrow_n be_v more_o constant_a than_o our_o spiritual_a rapture_n so_o that_o from_o our_o incapacity_n of_o maintain_v a_o constant_a and_o sufficient_a exercise_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o joy_n in_o our_o soul_n through_o the_o trouble_n sin_n and_o temptation_n of_o this_o world_n the_o weakness_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o want_v of_o the_o sufficient_a gift_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n we_o be_v not_o now_o able_a to_o sing_v with_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o the_o understanding_n also_o in_o the_o constant_a and_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o to_o press_v it_o prayer_n but_o we_o shall_v constant_o go_v to_o god_n as_o we_o can_v not_o only_o for_o continuance_n of_o those_o mercy_n we_o have_v but_o for_o further_a supply_n of_o our_o inward_a and_o outward_a want_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a part_n of_o prayer_n but_o sing_v proceed_v from_o a_o fullness_n of_o enjoyment_n and_o be_v call_v a_o break_v forth_o 52.9_o isa_n 52.9_o and_o therefore_o require_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n for_o we_o can_v pray_v for_o what_o we_o have_v not_o but_o we_o shall_v break_v forth_o into_o sing_v from_o what_o we_o have_v otherwise_o we_o mock_v god_n and_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o with_o our_o mouth_n 29.13_o isa_n 29.13_o and_o honour_v he_o with_o our_o lip_n when_o our_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o and_o our_o fear_n towards_o he_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o when_o i_o consider_v the_o present_a state_n and_o frame_n of_o the_o church_n of_o jesus_n christ_n i_o much_o wonder_v that_o so_o many_o shall_v be_v for_o sing_v when_o their_o heart_n be_v so_o much_o below_o prayer_n for_o if_o we_o shall_v go_v from_o saint_n to_o saint_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o this_o be_v the_o general_a cry_n i_o have_v a_o dead_a and_o stony_a heart_n say_v one_o and_o another_o mourn_v under_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o temptation_n and_o a_o three_o for_o the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n and_o the_o great_a complaint_n be_v i_o be_o dull_a and_o heavy_a and_o can_v profit_v in_o ordinance_n and_o that_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o i_o be_o shut_v up_o in_o my_o spirit_n that_o i_o can_v pray_v i_o want_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n and_o supplication_n now_o if_o thus_o it_o be_v then_o where_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o sing_v will_v you_o lie_v and_o express_v that_o with_o your_o lip_n to_o god_n which_o you_o have_v not_o in_o your_o heart_n but_o some_o of_o these_o will_v say_v singing_z will_v raise_v my_o spirit_n i_o find_v refreshment_n by_o it_o and_o therefore_o i_o be_o for_o sing_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o natural_a sensual_a joy_n in_o the_o heart_n when_o it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o light_n and_o influence_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o make_v not_o our_o spirit_n a_o standard_n for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n but_o that_o we_o try_v our_o spirit_n by_o the_o scripture_n 2_o as_o to_o form_n of_o prayer_n and_z sing_v i_o have_v sufficient_o treat_v of_o they_o before_o and_o that_o the_o sufficient_a gift_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n shall_v continue_v for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel-church_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o my_o business_n here_o be_v only_o to_o show_v that_o the_o use_v a_o form_n of_o preach_v be_v no_o example_n for_o a_o form_n of_o sing_v if_o it_o be_v why_o not_o of_o prayer_n also_o which_o you_o deny_v because_o there_o be_v reason_n for_o a_o form_n of_o preach_v from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o example_n of_o christ_n himself_o who_o read_v a_o text_n and_o then_o preach_v from_o it_o though_o as_o he_o be_v not_o so_o other_o be_v not_o limit_v to_o that_o or_o any_o other_o particular_a form_n yet_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o they_o and_o require_v of_o they_o to_o compare_v spiritual_a thing_n with_o spiritual_a to_o attend_v on_o read_v and_o meditation_n 4.6_o 1_o cor._n 2.13_o 1_o tim._n 4.13_o 15._o 2_o tim._n 1.13_o ch_n 2.15_o 1_o cor._n 4.6_o and_o to_o hold_v fast_o the_o form_n of_o sound_a word_n right_o divide_v the_o word_n of_o truth_n as_o a_o workman_n that_o need_v not_o to_o be_v ashamed_a of_o his_o work_n as_o paul_n who_o say_v these_o thing_n brethren_n i_o have_v in_o a_o figure_n transfer_v to_o myself_o and_o to_o apollo_n for_o your_o sake_n so_o that_o where_o the_o scripture_n do_v give_v we_o liberty_n we_o may_v use_v it_o but_o it_o be_v our_o sin_n to_o take_v it_o where_o it_o be_v forbid_v as_o i_o have_v show_v it_o be_v to_o use_v a_o form_n of_o prayer_n or_o singing_n i_o can_v say_v more_o of_o the_o different_a nature_n of_o preach_v to_o that_o of_o prayer_n and_o singing_n but_o i_o think_v it_o be_v needless_a here_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v conclude_v with_o my_o humble_a request_n to_o all_o those_o that_o be_v for_o sing_v of_o david_n psalm_n or_o any_o prescribe_a form_n of_o sing_v as_o the_o custom_n be_v that_o they_o will_v be_v please_v serious_o to_o consider_v of_o these_o several_a thing_n follow_v 1._o that_o the_o vocal_a sing_v together_o either_o of_o david_n psalm_n or_o any_o humane_a precomposed_a form_n be_v a_o corrupt_a of_o the_o pure_a worship_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o mingle_v of_o law_n and_o gospel_n or_o humane_a and_o divine_a thing_n together_o 2._o it_o will_v lead_v we_o to_o apostasy_n to_o return_v from_o whence_o we_o come_v as_o a_o dog_n to_o his_o vomit_n and_o as_o a_o sow_n that_o be_v wash_v to_o she_o wallow_v in_o the_o mire_n 3._o consider_v serious_o you_o that_o be_v leader_n of_o the_o lord_n people_n and_o be_v for_o such_o formal_a sing_v whether_o the_o same_o argument_n you_o now_o urge_v to_o your_o fellow-brethren_n will_v be_v pleadable_a for_o your_o practice_n at_o the_o bar_n of_o jesus_n christ_n you_o may_v plead_v they_o here_o to_o we_o but_o will_v you_o not_o be_v ashamed_a to_o own_v they_o there_o the_o lord_n give_v you_o a_o true_a sight_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o evil_a consequence_n of_o this_o your_o error_n that_o you_o may_v not_o cause_v his_o people_n to_o sin_n but_o may_v yet_o with_o sound_a doctrine_n strengthen_v the_o weak_a hand_n and_o confirm_v the_o feeble_a knee_n and_o make_v straight_a path_n for_o your_o
