I am gray-headed until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation and thy power to all them that are yet for to come Thy righteousness O God is very high and great things are they that thou hast done O God who is like unto thee Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end Amen ¶ Adding this O Saviour of the world who by thy cross and precious bloud hast redeemed us save us and help us we humbly beseech thee O Lord. ¶ Then shall the Minister say THe Almighty Lord who is a most strong tower to all them that put their trust in him to whom all things in heaven in earth and under the earth do bowe and obey be now and evermore thy defence and make thee know and feel that there is none other Name under heaven given to man in whom and through whom thou mayest receive health and salvation but only the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ Amen ¶ And after that shall say UNto Gods gracious mercy and protection we commit thee The Lord bless thee and keep thee The Lord make his face to shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace both now and evermore Amen A Prayer for a sick Child O Almighty God and merciful Father to whom alone belong the issues of life and death Look down from heaven we humbly beseech thee with the eyes of mercy upon this Child now lying upon the bed of sickness Visit him O Lord with thy salvation deliver him in thy good appointed time from his bodily pain and save his soul for thy mercies save That if it shall be thy pleasure to prolong his days here on earth he may live to thee and be an instrument of thy glory by serving thee faithfully and doing good in his generation or else receive him into those heavenly habitations where the souls of them that sleep in the Lord Jesus enjoy perpetual rest and felicity Grant this O Lord for thy mercies sake in the same thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever one God world without end Amen ¶ A Prayer for a sick Person when there appeareth small hope of Recovery O Father of mercies and God of all comfort our only help in time of need We flie unto thee for succour in behalf of this thy servant here lying under thy hand in great weakness of body Look graciously upon him O Lord and the more the outward man decayeth strengthen him we beseech thee so much the more continually with thy grace and holy Spirit in the inner man Give him unfeigned repentance for all the errours of his life past and stedfast faith in thy Son Jesus that his sins may be done away by thy mercy and his pardon sealed in heaven before he go hence and be no more seen We know O Lord that there is no word impossible with thee and that if thou wilt thou canst even yet raise him up and grant him a longer continuance amongst us Yet forasmuch as in all appearance the time of his dissolution draweth near so fit and prepare him we beseech thee against the hour of death that after his departure hence in peace and in thy favour his soul may be received into thine everlasting kingdom through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thine only Son our Lord and Saviour Amen ¶ A commendatory Prayer for a sick Person at the point of departure O Almighty God with whom do live the spirits of just men made perfect after they are delivered from their earthly prisons We humbly commend the soul of this thy servant our dear brother into thy hands as into the hands of a faithful Creatour and most merciful Saviour most humbly beseeching thee that it may be precious in thy fight Wash it we pray thee in the bloud of that immaculate Lamb that was slain to take away the sins of the world that whatsoever defilements it may have contracted in the midst of this miserable and naughty world through the lusts of the flesh or the wiles of Satan being purged and done away it may be presented pure and without spot before thee And teach us who survive in this and other like daily spectacles of mortality to see how frail and uncertain our own condition is and so to number our days that we may seriously apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wisdom whilst we live here which may in the end bring us to life everlasting through the merits of Jesus Christ thine only Son our Lord. Amen ¶ A Prayer for Persons troubled in Mind or in Conscience O Blessed Lord the Father of mercies and the God of all comforts we beseech thee look down in pity and compassion upon this thy afflicted servant Thou writest bitter things against him and makest him to possess his former iniquities thy wrath lieth hard upon him and his soul is full of trouble But O merciful God who hast written thy holy Word for our learning that we through patience and comfort of thy holy Scriptures might have hope give him a right understanding of himself and of thy threats and promises that he may neither cast away his confidence in thee nor place it any where but in thee Give him strength against all his temptations and heal all his distempers Break not the bruised reed nor quench the smoking flax Shut not up thy tender mercies in displeasure but make him to hear of joy and gladness that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoyce Deliver him from fear of the enemy and lift up the light of thy countenance upon him and give him peace through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The COMMUNION of the SICK ¶ Forasmuch as all mortal Men be subject to many sudden Perils Diseases and Sicknesses and ever uncertain what time they shall depart out of this life therefore to the intent they may be always in a readiness to die whensoever it shall please Almighty God to call them the Curates shall diligently from time to time but especially in the time of Pestilence or other infectious Sickness exhort their Parishioners to the often receiving of the holy Communion of the Body and Bloud of our Saviour Christ when it shall be publickly Administred in the Church that so doing they may in case of sudden visitation have the less cause to be disquieted for lack of the same But if the sick Person be not able to come to the Church and yet is desirous to receive the Communion in his House then he must give timely notice to the Curate signifying also how many there are to Communicate with him which shall be three or two at the least and having a convenient place in the sick Mans House with all things necessary so prepared that the Curate may reverently
receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth And when he had spoken these things while they beheld he was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up behold two men stood by them in white apparel which also said Ye men of Galilee why stand ye gazing up into heaven This same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven The Gospel S. Jesus Christ and brother of James to them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called Mercy unto you and peace and love be multiplied Beloved when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the Faith which was once delivered unto the saints For there are certain men crept in unawares who were before of old ordained to this condemnation ungodly men turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness and denying the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ I will therefore put you in remembrance though ye once knew this how that the Lord having saved the people out of the land of Egypt afterward destroyed them that believed not And the angels which kept not their first estate but left their own habitation he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day Even as Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange flesh are set forth for an example suffering the vengeance of eternal fire Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh despise dominion and speak evil of dignities The Gospel S. Matth. 5.1 JEsus seeing the multitudes went up into a mountain and when he was set his disciples came unto him And he opened his mouth and taught them saying Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God Blessed are the peace-makers for they shall be called the children of God Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you and shall say all manner of evil against you falsly for my sake Rejoyce and be exceeding glad for great is your reward in heaven for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you The ORDER for the Administration of the LORDS SUPPER or HOLY COMMUNION ¶ SO many as intend to be partakers of the Holy Communion shall signifie their Names to the Curate at least sometime the day before ¶ And if any of those be an open and notorious evil liver or have done any wrong to his Neighbours by word or deed so that the Congregation be thereby offended the Curate having knowledge thereof shall call him and advertise him that in any wise he presume not to come to the Lords Table until he hath openly declared himself to have truly repented and amended his former naughty life that the Congregation may thereby be satisfied which before were offended and that he hath recompensed the Parties to whom he hath done wrong or at least declare himself to be in full purpose so to do as soon as he conveniently may ¶ The same Order shall the Curate use with those betwixt whom he perceiveth malice and hatred to reign not suffering them to be partakers of the Lords Table until he know them to be reconciled And if one of the Parties so at variance be content to forgive
from the bottom of his heart all that the other hath trespassed against him and to make amends for that he himself hath offended and the other Party will not be perswaded to a godly unity but remain still in his frowardness and malice the Minister in that case ought to admit the penitent Person to the Holy Communion and not him that is obstinate Provided that every Minister so repelling any as is specified in this or the next precedent Paragraph of this Rubrick shall be obliged to give an account of the same to the Ordinary within fourteen days after at the farthest And the Ordinary shall proceed against the offending Person according to the Canon ¶ The Table at the Communion-time having a fair white Linen Cloth upon it shall stand in the body of the Church or in the Chancel where Morning and Evening Prayer are appointed to be said And the Priest standing at the North-side of the Table shall say the Lords Prayer with the Collect following the People kneeling OUR Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy Name Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done in earth As it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive them that trespass against us And lead not into temptation But deliver us from evil Amen Collect. Amen ¶ Then all standing up the Priest shall say to the Godfathers and Godmothers this Exhortation following Forasmuch as this Child hath promised by you his Sureties to renounce the devil and all his works to believe in God and to serve him ye must remember that it is your parts and duties to see that this Infant be taught so soon as he shall be able to learn what a solemn vow promise and profession he hath here made by you And that he may know these things the better ye shall call upon him to hear Sermons and chiefly ye shall provide that he may learn the Creed the Lords Prayer and the ten Commandments in the vulgar tongue and all other things which a Christian ought to know and believe to his souls health and that this Child may be virtuously brought up to lead a godly and a Christian life remembring always that Baptism doth represent unto us our profession which is to follow the example of our Saviour Christ and to be made like unto him that as he died and rose again for us so should we who are baptized die from sin and rise again unto righteousness continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections and daily proceeding in all virtue and godliness of living ¶ Then shall he add and say YE are to
take care that this Child be brought to the Bishop to be confirmed by him so soon as he can say the Creed the Lords Prayer and the ten Commandments in the vulgar tongue and be further instructed in the Church-Catechism set forth for that purpose IT is certain by Gods Word that Children which are baptized dying before they commit actual sin are undoubtedly saved TO take away all scruple concerning the use of the sign of the Cross in Baptism the true Explication thereof and the just Reasons for the retaining of it may be seen in the thirtieth Canon first published in the year MDCIV. The MINISTRATION of Private BAPTISM of CHILDREN in HOUSES ¶ THe Curates of every Parish shall often admonish the People that they defer not the Baptism of their children longer then the first or second Sunday next after their Birth or other Holy-day falling between unless upon a great and reasonable cause to be approved by the Curate ¶ And also they shall warn them that without like great cause and necessity they procure not their children to be Baptized at home in their houses But when need shall compel them so to do then Baptism shall be administred on this fashion ¶ First let the Minister of the Parish or in his absence any other lawful Minister that can be procured with them that are present call upon God and say the Lords Prayer and so many of the Collects appointed to be said before in the Form of Publick Baptism as the time and present exigence will suffer And then the child being named by some one that is present the Minister shall pour Water upon it saying these words N. Amen ¶ And let them not doubt but that the child so Baptized is lawfully and sufficiently Baptized and ought not be Baptized again Yet nevertheless if the child which is after this sort Baptized do afterward live it is expedient that it be brought into the Church to the intent that if the Minister of the same Parish did himself Baptize that child the Congregation may be certified of the true form of Baptism by him privately before used In which case he shall say thus I certifie you that according to the due and prescribed Order of the Church at such a time and at such a place before divers witnesses I baptized this child ¶ BVt if the child were baptized by any other lawful Minister then the Minister of the Parish where the child was born or christened shall examine and try whether the child be lawfully Baptized or no. In which case if those that bring any child to the Church do answer that the same child is already baptized then shall the Minister examine them further saying BY whom was this child Baptized Who was present when this child was Baptized Because some things essential to this Sacrament may happen to be omitted through fear or haste in such times of extremity therefore I demand further of you With what matter was this child Baptized With what words was this child Baptized ¶ And if the Minister shall find by the Answers of such as bring the child that all things were done as they ought to be then shall not be christen the child again but shall receive him as one of the flock of true Christian people saying thus I Certifie you that in this case all is well done and according unto due order concerning the Baptizing of this child who being born in original sin and in the wrath of God is now by the laver of Regeneration in Baptism received into the number of the children of God and heirs of everlasting life For our Lord Jesus Christ doth not deny his grace and mercy unto such Infants but most lovingly doth call them unto him as the holy Gospel doth witness to our comfort on this wise The Gospel S. most mighty God hath spoken and called the world from the rising up of the sun unto the going down thereof 2 Out of Sion hath God appeared in perfect beauty 3 Our God shall come and shall not keep silence there shall go before him a consuming fire and a mighty tempest shall be stirred up round about him 4 He shall call the heaven from above and the earth that he may judge his people 5 Gather my saints together unto me those that have made a covenant with me with sacrifice 6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness for God is Judge himself 7 Hear O my people and I will speak I my self will testifie against thee O Israel for I am God even thy God 8 I will not reprove thee because of thy sacrifices or for thy burnt-offerings because they were not alway before me 9 I will take no bullock out of thine house nor he-goat out of thy folds 10 For all the beasts of the forest are mine and so are the cattel upon a thousand hills 11 I know all the fowls upon the mountains and the wild beasts of the field are in my sight 12 If I be hungry I will not tell thee for the whole world is mine and all that is therein 13 Thinkest thou that I will eat bulls flesh and drink the bloud of goats 14 Offer unto God thanksgiving and pay thy vows unto the most Highest 15 And call upon me in the time of trouble so will I hear thee and thou shalt praise me 16 But unto the ungodly said God Why dost thou preach my laws and takest my covenant in thy mouth 17 Whereas thou hatest to be reformed and hast cast my words behind thee 18 When thou sawest a thief thou consentedst unto him and hast been partaker with the adulterers 19 Thou hast let thy mouth speak wickedness and with thy tongue thou hast set forth deceit 20 Thou satest and spakest against thy brother yea and hast slandered thine own mothers son 21 These things hast thou done and I held my tongue and thou thoughtest wickedly that I am even such a one as thy self but I will reprove thee and set before thee the things that thou hast done 22 O Consider this ye that forget God lest I pluck you away and there be none to deliver you 23 Whoso offereth me thanks and praise he honoureth me and to him that ordereth his conversation right will I shew the salvation of God Miserere mei Deus Psal 51. WHy boastest thou thy self thou tyrant that thou canst do mischief 2 Whereas the goodness of God endureth yet daily 3 Thy tongue imagineth wickedness and with lies thou cuttest like a sharp rasour 4 Thou hast loved unrighteousness more then goodness and to talk of lies more then righteousness 5 Thou hast loved to speak all words that may do hurt O thou false tongue 6 Therefore shall God destroy thee for ever he shall take thee and pluck thee out of thy dwelling and root thee out of the land of the living 7 The righteous also shall see this and fear and shall laugh him to scorn 8 Lo this is the man that took not God for his strength but trusted unto the multitude of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness 9 As for me I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God my trust is in the tender mercy of God for ever and ever 10 I will always give thanks unto thee for that thou hast done and I will hope in thy Name for thy saints like it well Evening Prayer Dixit insipiens Psal 53. THE foolish body hath said in his heart There is no God 2 Corrupt are they and become abominable in their wickedness there is none that doeth good 3 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any that would understand and seek after God 4 But they are all gone out of the way they are altogether become abominable there is also none that doeth good no not one 5 Are not they without understanding that work wickedness eating up my people as if they would eat bread they have not called upon God 6 They were afraid where no fear was for God hath broken the bones of him that besieged thee thou hast put them to confusion because God hath despised them 7 Oh that the salvation were given unto Israel out of Sion Oh that the Lord would deliver his people out of captivity 8 Then should Jacob rejoyce and Israel should be right glad Deus in nomine Psal 54. SAve me O God for thy Names sake and avenge me in thy strength 2 Hear my prayer O God and hearken unto the words of my mouth 3 For strangers are risen up against me and tyrants which have not God before their eyes seek after my soul 4 Behold God is my helper the Lord is with them that uphold my soul 5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies destroy thou them in thy truth 6 An offering of a free heart will I give thee and praise thy
sight And that we may with perfect faith ever acknowledge thee The Spirit of Father and of Son One God in Persons three To God the Father laud and praise and to his blessed Son And to the holy Spirit of grace Co-equal three in one And pray we that our only Lord would please his Spirit to send On all that shall profess his Name from hence to the worlds end Amen ¶ That ended the Archbishop shall say Lord hear our prayer Answer And let our cry come unto thee Archbishop Let us pray ALmighty God and most merciful Father who of thine infinite goodness hast given thy only and dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ to be our Redeemer and the author of everlasting life who after that he had made perfect our Redemption by his death and was ascended into heaven poured down abundantly his gifts upon men making some Apostles some Prophets some Evangelists some Pastors and Doctors to the edifying and making perfect his Church Grant we beseech thee to this thy Servant such grace that he may evermore be ready to spread abroad thy Gospel the glad tidings of reconciliation with thee and use the Authority given him not to destruction but to salvation not to hurt but to help so that as a wise and faithful servant giving to thy Family their portion in due season he may at last be received into everlasting joy through Jesus Christ our Lord who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth one God world without end Amen ¶ Then the Archbishop and Bishops present shall lay their Hands upon the Head of the Elected Bishop kneeling before them upon his Knees the Archbishop saying REceive the Holy Ghost for the Office and Work of a Bishop in the Church of God now committed unto thee by the Imposition of our Hands In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost Amen And remember that thou stir up the grace of God which is given thee by this Imposition of our Hands For God hath not given us the spirit of fear but of power and love and soberness ¶ Then the Archbishop shall deliver him the Bible saying GIve heed unto reading Exhortation and Doctrine Think upon the things contained in this Book Be diligent in them that the increase coming thereby may be manifest unto all men Take heed unto thy self and to Doctrine and be diligent in doing them for by so doing thou shalt both save thy self and them that hear thee Be to the flock of Christ a shepherd not a wolf feed them devour them not Hold up the weak heal the sick bind up the broken bring again the outcasts seek the lost Be so merciful that you be not too remiss so minister Discipline that you forget not mercy that when the chief Shepherd shall appear you may receive the never-fading crown of glory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen ¶ Then the Archbishop shall proceed in the Communion-Service with whom the new Consecrated Bishop with others shall also Communicate ¶ And for the last Collect immediately before the Benediction shall be said these Prayers MOst merciful Father we beseech thee to send down upon this thy Servant thy heavenly blessing and so endue him with thy holy Spirit that he Preaching thy Word may not only be earnest to reprove beseech and rebuke with all patience and doctrine but also may be to such as believe a wholsom example in word in conversation in love in faith in chastity and in purity that faithfully fulfilling his course at the latter day he may receive the crown of righteousness laid up by the Lord the righteous Judge who liveth and reigneth one God with the Father and the Holy Ghost world without end Amen PRevent us O Lord in all our doings with thy most gracious favour and further us with thy continual help that in all our works begun continued and ended in thee we may glorifie thy holy Name and finally by thy mercy obtain everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen THe peace of God which passeth all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. He hath not dealt with us after our sins nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses Verse 10. ¶ Instead of Venite exultremus shall this hymn following be used one Verse by the Priest and another by the Clerk and People O Give thanks unto the Lord for he is gracious and his mercy endureth for ever Psal 107.1 Let them give thanks whom the Lord hath redeemed and delivered from the hand of the enemy verse 2. Many a time have they fought against me from my youth up may Israel now say Psal 129.1 Yea many a time have they vexed me from my youth up but they have not prevailed against me verse 2. They have privily laid their net to destroy me without a cause yea even without a cause have they made a pit for my soul Psal 35.7 They have laid a net for my feet and pressed down my soul they have digged a pit before me and are fallen into the midst of it themselves Psal 57 7. Great is our Lord and great is his power yea and his wisdom is infinite
