†Heb. my hand hath kissed my mouth my mouth hath kissed my hand 28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge for I should have denied the God that is above 29 If I rejoyced at the destruction of him that hated me or lift up my self when evil found him 30 Neither have I suffered †Heb. my palace my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul 31 If the men of my tabernacle said not Oh that we had of his flesh we cannot be satisfied 32 The stranger did not lodge in the street but I opened my doors ‖ Or to the way to the traveller 33 If I covered my transgressions ‖ Or after the manner of men as Adam by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom 34 Did I fear a great multitude or did the contempt of families terrifie me that I kept silence and went not out of the door 35 O that one would hear me ‖ Or behold my sign is that the Almighty will answer me behold my desire is that the Almighty would answer me and that mine adversary had written a book 36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and binde it as a crown to me 37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps as a prince would I go near unto him 38 If my land cry against me or that the furrows likewise thereof †Heb. weep complain 39 If I have eaten †Heb. the strength thereof the fruits thereof without money or have †Heb. caused the soul of the owners thereof to expire or breathe out caused the owners thereof to lose their life 40 Let thistles grow in stead of wheat and ‖ Or nâ—isom weeds cockle in stead of barley The words of Job are ended CHAP. XXXII 1 Elihu is angry with Job and his three friends 6 Because wisdom cometh not from age he excuseth the boldness of his youth 11 He reproveth them for not satisfying of Job 16 His zeal to speak SO these three men ceased †Heb. from answering to answer Job because he was righteous in his own eyes 2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Bâ—zite of the kindred of Ram against Job was his wrath kindled because he justified †Heb. his soul himself rather then God 3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled because they had found no answer and yet had condemned Job 4 Now Elihu had †Heb. expected Job in wards waited till Job had spoken because they were †Heb. elder for days elder then he 5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men then his wrath was kindled 6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said I am †Heb. few of days young and ye are very old wherefore I was afraid and †Heb. feared durst not shew you mine opinion 7 I said Days should speak and multitude of years should teach wisdom 8 But there is a spirit in a man and * Ch. 38.36 Pro. 2.6 Eccles 2.26 Dan. 1.17 2.21 the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding 9 Great men are not always wise neither do the aged understand judgement 10 Therefore I said Hearken to me I also will shew mine opinion 11 Behold I waited for your words I gave ear to your †Heb. understandings reasons whilst you searched out †Heb. words what to say 12 Yea I attended unto you and behold there was none of you that convinced Job or that answered his words 13 Lest ye should say We have found out wisdom God thrusteth him down not man 14 Now he hath not ‖ Or ordered his words directed his words against me neither will I answer him with your speeches 15 They were amazed they answered no more †Heb. they removed speeches from themselves they left off speaking 16 When I had waited for they spâ—ke not but stood still and answered no more 17 I said I will answer also my part I also will shew mine opinion 18 For I am full of †Heb. words mattâ—r †Heb. the spirit of my belly the spirit within me constraineth me 19 Behold my belly is as wine which †Heb. is not opened hath no vent it is ready to burst like new bottles 20 I will speak †Heb. that I may breathe that I may be refreshed I will open my lipâ— and answer 21 Let me not I pray you accept any mans person neither let me give flattering titles unto man 22 For I know not to give flattering titles in so doing my maker would soon take me away CHAP. father 8 Then he said unto him Go and tarry not So he went in and said to his father Behold I have found one which will go with me Then he said Call him unto me that I may know of what tribe he is and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee 9 So he called him and he came in and they saluted one another 10 Then Tobit said unto him Brother shew me of what tribe and family thou art 11 To whom he said Dost thou seek for a tribe or family or an hired man to go with thy son Then Tobit said unto him I would know brother thy kindred and name 12 Then he said I am Azarias the son of Ananias the great and of thy brethren 13 Then Tobit said Thou art welcome brother be not now angry with me because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family for thou art my brother of an honest and good stock for I know Ananias and Jonathas sons of that great Samaias as we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the first-born and the tenths of the fruits and they were not seduced with the errour of our brethren my brother thou art of a good stock 14 But tell me what wages shall I give thee wilt thou a drachme a day and things necessary as to mine own son 15 Yea moreover if ye return safe I will add something to thy wages 16 So they were well pleased Then said he to Tobias Prepare thy self for the journey and God send you a good journey And when his son had prepared all things for the journey his father said Go thou with this man and God which dwelleth in heaven prosper your journey and the angel of God keep you company So they went forth both and the young mans dog with them 17 But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit Why hast thou sent away our son is he not the staff of our hand in going in and out before us 18 ‖ Let not money be added but be the offscouringâ— of our son Be not greedy to add money to money but let it be as refuse in respect of our childe 19 ‖ Or So long as God bath granted us to live this is sufficient For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us 20 Then said Tobit to her Take no care my sister he shall return in safety and thine eyes shall see him 21 For the good angel will keep him company and his journey shall be prosperous and he shall return safe 22 Then the made an end of weeping CHAP. VI. 4 The angel biddeth Tobias to take the liver heart and gall out of a fish 10 and to marry Sara the daughter of Raguel 16 and teacheth how to drive the wicked spirit away ANd as they went on their journey they came in the evening to the river Tigris and they lodged there 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself a fish leaped out of the river and would have devoured him 3 Then the angel said unto him Take the fish and the young man laid hold of the fish and ‖ Or cast it upon the â—and drew it to land 4 To whom the angel said Open the fish and take the heart and the liver and the gall and put them up safely 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him and when they had rosted the fish they did eat it then they both went on their way till they drew near to Ecbatane 6 Then the young man said to the angel Brother Azarias to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish 7 And he said unto him Touching the heart and the liver if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman and the party shall be no more vexed 8 As for the gall it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness in his eyes and he shall be healed 9 And when they were come near to Rages 10 The angel said to the young man Brother to day we shall lodge with Raguel who is thy cousin he also hath one onely daughter named Sara I will speak for her that she may be given thee for a wife 11 For to thee doth the ‖ Or inheritance * Num. 27.8 36.8 right of her appertain seeing thou onely art of her kindred 12 And the maid is fair and wise now therefore hear me and I will speak to her father and when we return from Rages we will celebrate the marriage for I know that Raguel cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses but he shall be guilty of death because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to thee then to any other 13 Then the young man answered the angel I have heard brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men who all died in the marriage-chamber 14 And now I am the onely son of my father and I am afraid lest if I go in unto her I die as the other before for a wicked spirit loveth her which hurteth no body but those which come unto her wherefore I also fear lest I die and bring my fathers and my mothers life because of me to the grave with sorrow for they have no other son to bury them 15 Then the angel said unto him Dost thou not remember the precepts which thy father gave thee that thou shouldest marry a wife of thine own kindred wherefore hear me O my brother for she shall be given thee to wife and make thou no reckoning of the evil spirit for this same night shall she be given thee in marriage 16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage-chamber thou shalt take the ‖ Or embers ashes of perfume and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish and shalt make a smoke with it 17 And the devil shall smell it and flee away and never come again any more but when thou shalt come to her rise up both of you and pray to God which is merciful who will have pity on you and save you fear not for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning and thou shalt preserve her and she shall go with thee moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children Now when Tobias had heard these things he loved her and his heart was ‖ Or vehemently effectually joyned to her CHAP. VII 11 Raguel telleth Tobias what had happened to his daughter 12 and giveth her in marriage unto him 17 She is conveyed to her chamber and weepeth 18 Her mother comforteth her ANd when they were come to Ecbatane they came to the house of Raguel and Sara met them and after they had saluted one another she brought them into the house 2 Then said Raguel to Edna his wife How like is this young man to Tobit my cousin 3 And Raguel asked them From whence
the Spirit 6 Therefore we are always confident knowing that whilest we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord 7 For we walk by faith not by sight 8 We are confident I say and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we ‖ Or endeavour labour that whether present or absent we may be accepted of him 10 * Rom. 14.10 For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ that every one may receive the things done in his body according to that he hath done whether it be good or bad 11 Knowing therefore the terrour of the Lord we perswade men but we are made manifest unto God and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences 12 For we commend not our selves again unto you but give you occasion to glory on our behalf that you may have somewhat to answer them which glory †Gr. in the face in appearance and not in heart 13 For whether we be besides our selves it is to God or whether we be sober it is for your cause 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us because we thus judge that if one died for all then were all dead 15 And that he died for all that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves but unto him which died for them and rose again 16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh yea though we have known Christ after the flesh yet now henceforth know we him no more 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ ‖ Or let him be he is a new creature * Isa 43.19 Rev. 21.5 old things are past away behold all things are become new 18 And all things are of God who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ and hath given to us the ministery of reconciliation 19 To wit that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself not imputing their trespasses unto them and hath †Gr. put in us committed unto us the word of reconciliation 20 Now then we are ambassadours for Christ as though God did beseech you by us we pray you in Christs stead be ye reconciled to God 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him CHAP. VII 1 He proceedeth in exhorting them to purity of life 2 and to bear him like affection as he doth to them 3 Whereof lest he might seem to doubt he declareth what comfort he took in his afflictions by the report which Titus gave of their godly sorrow which his former epistle had wrought in thâ—m 13 and of their loving kindness and obedience towards Titus answerable to his former boastings of them HAving therefore these promises dearly beloved let us cleanse our selves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God 2 Receive us we have wronged no man we have corrupted no man we have defrauded no man 3 I speak not this to condemn you for I have said before that you are in our hearts to die and live with you 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you great is my glorying of you I am filled with comfort I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation 5 For when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no rest but we were troubled on every side without were fightings within were fears 6 Nevertheless God that comforteth those that are cast down comforted us by the coming of Titus 7 And not by his coming onely but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you when he told us your earnest desire your mourning your fervent minde toward me so that I rejoyced the more 8 For though I made you sorry with a letter I do not repent though I did repent for I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry though it were but for a season 9 Now I rejoyce not that you were made sorry but that ye sorrowed to repentance for ye were made sorry ‖ Or according to God after a godly manner that you might receive damage by us in nothing 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance
and he smote the javelin into the wall and David fled and escaped that night 11 Saul also sent messengers unto Davids house to watch him and to slay him in the morning and Michal Davids wife told him saying If thou save not thy life to night to morrow thou shalt be slain 12 ¶ So Michal let David down through a window and he went and fled and escaped 13 And Michal tooke an image and laid it in the bed and put a pillow of goats hair for his bolster and covered it with a cloth 14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David she said He is sick 15 And Saul sent the messengers again to see David saying Bring him up to me in the bed that I may slay him 16 And when the messengers were come in behold there was an image in the bed with a pillow of goats hair for his bolster 17 And Saul said unto Michal why hast thou deceived me so and sent away mine enemy that he is escaped And Michal answered Saul He said unto me Let me go why should I kill thee 18 ¶ So David fled and escaped and came to Samuel to Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him and he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth 19 And it was told Saul saying Behold David is at Naioth in Ramah 20 And Saul sent messengers to take David and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying Samuel standing as appointed over them the spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul and they also prophesied 21 And when it was told Saul he sent other messengers and they prophesied likewise and Saul sent messengers again the third time and they prophesied also 22 Then went the also to Ramah and came to a great well that is in Sechu and he asked and said Where are Samuel and David And one said Behold they be at Naioth in Ramah 23 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah and the spirit of God was upon him also and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah 24 And he stript off his clothes also and prophesied before Samuel in like manner and †Heb. fell lay down naked all that day and all that nigh Wherefore they say * Chap. 10.11 Is Saul also among the prophets CHAP. XX. 1 David consulteth with Jonathan for his safety 11 Jonathan and David renew their covenant by oath 18 Jonathans token to David 24 Saul missing David seeketh to kill Jonathan 35 Jonathan lovingly taketh his leave of David ANd David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan What have I done what is mine iniquity and what is my sin before thy father that he seeketh my life 2 And he said unto him God forbid thou shalt not die behold my father will do nothing either great or small but that he will †Heb. uncover mine ear shew it me and why should my father hide this thing from me it is not so 3 And David sware moreover and said Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes and he saith Let not Jonathan know this lest he be grieved but truly as the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth there is but a step between me and death 4 Then said Jonathan unto David ‖ Or Say what is thy minde and I will do c. Whatsoever thy soul †Heb. speaketh or thinketh desireth I will even do it for thee 5 And David said unto Jonathan Behold to morrow is the new-moon and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat but let me go that I may hide my self in the field unto the third day at even 6 If thy father at all miss me then say David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Beth-lehem his city for there is a yearly ‖ Or feast sacrifice there for all the family 7 If he say thus It is well thy servant shall have peace but if he be very wroth then be sure that evil is determined by him 8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant for * Chap. 18.3 23 18. thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee notwithstanding if there be in me iniquity slay me thy self for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father 9 And Jonathan said Far be it from thee for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee then would not I tell it thee 10 Then said David to Jonathan Who shall tell me or what if thy father answer thee roughly 11 ¶ And Jonathan said unto David Come and let us go out into the field And they went out both of them into the field 12 And Jonathan said unto David O LORD God of Israel when I have †Heb. searched sounded my father about to morrow any time or the third day and behold if there be good toward David and I then send not unto thee and †Heb. uncover thine ear shew it thee 13 The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan but if it please my father to do thee evil then I will shew it thee and send thee away that thou mayest go in peace and the LORD be with thee as he hath been with my father 14 And thou shalt not onely while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD that I die not 15 But alâ—o thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever no not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth 16 So Jonathan †Heb. out made a covenant with the house of David saying Let the LORD even require it at the hand of Davids enemies 17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again ‖ Or by his love towards him because he loved him for he loved him as he loved his own soul 18 Then Jonathan said to David To morrow is the new-moon and thou shalt be missed because thy seat will be †Heb. missed empty 19 And when thou hast stayed three days then thou shalt go down ‖ Or diligently †Heb. greatly quickly and come to the place where thou didst hide thy self †Heb. in the day of the business when the business was in hand and shalt remain by the stone ‖ Or that sheweth the way Ezel 20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof as though I shot at a mark 21 And behold I will send a lad saying Go finde out the arrows If I expresly say unto the lad Behold the arrows are on this side of thee take them then come thou for there is peace to thee and †Heb. not any thing no hurt as the LORD liveth 22 But if I say thus unto the young man Behold the arrows are beyond thee go thy way for the LORD hath sent thee away 23 And as touching the matter which
behold I have played the fool and have erred exceedingly 22 And David answered and said Behold the kings spear and let one of the young men come over and fetch it 23 The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORDS anointed 24 And behold as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD and let him deliver me out of all tribulation 25 Then Saul said to David Blessed be thou my son David thou shalt both do great things and also shalt still prevail So David went on his way and Saul returned to his place CHAP. XXVII 1 Saul bearing David to be in Gath seeketh no more for him 5 David beggeth Ziklag of Achish 8 He invading other countreys perswadeth Achish he fought against Judah ANd David said in his heart I shall now †Heb. be consumed perish one day by the hand of Saul there is nothing better for me then that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines and Saul shall despair of me to seek me any more in any coast of Israel so shall I escape out of his hand 2 And David arose and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish the son of Maoch king of Gath. 3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath he and his men every man with his houshold even David with his two wives Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the Carmelitess Nabals wife 4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath and he sought no more again for him 5 ¶ And David said unto Achish If I have now found grace in thine eyes let them give me a place in some town in the countrey that I may dwell there for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee 6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day 7 And †Heb. the number of days the time that David dwelt in the countrey of the Philistines was †Heb. a year of days a full year and four moneths 8 ¶ And David and his men went up and invaded the Geshurites and the ‖ Or Gerzites Gezrites and the Amalekites for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land as thou goest unto Shur even unto the land of Egypt 9 And David smote the land and left neither man nor woman alive and took away the sheep and the oxen and the asses and the camels and the apparel and returned and came to Achish 10 And Achish said ‖ Or Did you not make a rode c. Whither have ye made a rode to day And David said Against the south of Judah and against the south of the Jerahmeelites and against the south of the Kenites 11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive to bring tidings to Gath saying Lest they should tell on us laying So did David and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the countrey of the Philistines 12 And Achish beleeved David saying He hath made his people Israel †Heb. to sâ—â—nk utterly to abhor him therefore he shall be my servant for ever CHAP. XXVIII 1 Achish putteth confidence in David 3 Saul having destroyed the witches 4 and now in his fear forsaken of God 7 seeketh to a witch 9 The witch encouraged by Saul raiseth up Samuel 15 Saul hearing his ruine fainteth 21 The woman with his servants refresh him with meat ANd it came to pass in those days that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare to fight with Israel and Achish said unto David Know thou assuredly that thou shalt go out with me to battel thou and thy men 2 And David said to Achish Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do And Achish said to David Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever 3 ¶ Now * Chap. 25.1 Samuel was dead and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah even in his own city and Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land 4 ¶ And the Philistines gathered themselves together and came and pitched in Shunem and Saul gathered all Israel together and they pitched in Gilboa 5 And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines he was afraid and his heart greatly trembled 6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD the LORD answered him not neither by dreams nor by Urim nor by prophets 7 ¶ Then said Saul unto his servants Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit that I may go to her and enquire of her And his servants said to him Behold there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Eâ—dor 8 And Saul disguised himself and put on other raiment and he went and two men with him and they came to the woman by night and he said I pray thee divine unto me by the familiar spirit and bring me him up whom I shall name unto thee 9 And the woman said unto him Behold thou knowest what Saul hath done how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life to cause me to die 10 And Saul sware to her by the LORD saying As the LORD liveth there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing 11 Then said the woman Whom shall I bring up unto thee And he said Bring me up Samuel 12 And when the woman saw Samuel she cried with a loud voice and the woman spake to Saul saying Why hast thou deceived me for thou art Saul 13 And the king said unto her Be not afraid for what sawest thou And the woman said unto Saul I saw gods ascending out of the earth 14 And he said unto her †Heb. XX. 1 Jehoshaphat in his fear proclaimeth a fast 5 His prayer 14 The prophesie of Jahaziel 20 Jehoshaphat exhorteth the people and setteth singers to praise the Lord. 22 The great overthrow of the enemies 26 The people having blessed God at Berachah return in triumph 31 Jehoshaphats reign 35 His convoy of ships which he made with Ahaziah according to the prophesie of Eliezer unhappily perished IT came to pass after this also that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon and with them other beside the Ammonites came against Jehoshaphat to battel 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat saying There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria and behold they be in Hazazon-tamar which is En-gedi 3 And Jehoshaphat feared and set †Heb. â—â—jaâ—â— himself to seek the LORD and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah 4 And Judah gathered themselves together to ask help of the LORD even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD 5 ¶ And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD before the new court 6 And said O LORD God of our fathers art not thou God in heaven and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen and in thine hand is there not power and might so that none is able to withstand thee 7 Art not thou our God †Heb. tâ—â— who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever 8 And they dwelt therein and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name saying 9 * 1 Kin. 8.17 Câ—ap 6.28 If when evil cometh upon us as the sword judgement or pestilence or famine we stand before this house and in thy presence for thy name is in this house and cry unto thee in our affliction then thou wilt hear and help 10 And now behold the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir whom thou * Deu. 2.9 wouldest not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt but they turned from them destroyed them not 11 Behold I say how they reward us to come to cast us out of thy possession which thou hast given us to inherit 12 O our God wilt thou not judge them for we have no might against this great company that conieth against us neither know we what to do but our eyes are upon thee 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD with their little ones their wives and their children 14 ¶ Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah the son of Benaiah the son of Jeiel the son of Mattaniah a Levite of the sons of Asaph came the spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation 15 And he said Hearken ye all Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem and thou king Jehoshaphat Thus saith the LORD unto you Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude for the battel is not yours but Gods 16 To morrow go ye down against them behold they come up by the †Heb. â—sâ—ent cliff of Ziz and ye shall finde them at the end of the ‖ Or â—liâ— brook before the wilderness of Jeruel 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battel set your selves stand ye still and see the salvation of the LORD with you O Judah and Jerusalem fear not nor be dismayed to morrow go out against them for the LORD will be with you 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD worshipping the LORD 19 And the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korhites stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high 20 ¶ And they rose early in the morning and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa and as they went forth Jehoshaphat stood and said Hear me O Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem * Isa 7.9 Beleeve in the LORD your God so shall you be established beleeve his prophets so shall ye prosper 21 And when he had consulted with the people he appointed singers unto the LORD and †Heb. praisers that should praise the beauty of holiness as they went out before the army and to say Praise the LORD for his mercy endureth for ever 22 ¶ †Heb. and in the time that they c. And when they began †Heb. in singing and praise to sing and to praise the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon Moab and mount Seir which were come against Judah and ‖ Or they smote one another they were smitten 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir utterly to slay and destroy them and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir every one helped †Heb. for the destruction to destroy another 24 And when Judah came toward the watch-tower in the wilderness they looked unto the multitude and behold they were dead bodies fain to the earth and †Heb. there was not an escaping none escaped 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies and precious jewels which they stript off for themselves more then they could carry away and they were three days in gathering of the spoil it was so much 26 ¶ And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of ‖ That is blessing Berachah for there they blessed the LORD therefore the name of the same place was called the valley of Berachah unto this day 27 Then they returned every man of Judah and Jerusalem and Jehoshaphat in the †Heb. bead forefront of them to go again to Jerusalem with joy for the LORD had made them to rejoyce over their enemies 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countreys when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet for his God gave him rest round about 31 ¶ * 1 Kin. 22 41 c. And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father and departed not from it doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away

XVIII ‖ Or He that separateth himself seeketh according to his desire and intermeddleth in every business THrough desire a man having separated himself seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom 2 A fool hath no delight in understanding but that his heart may discover it self 3 When the wicked cometh then cometh also contempt and with ignominy reproach 4 * Ch. 20.5 The words of a mans mouth are as deep waters and the well-spring of wisdom as a flowing brook 5 * Le. 19.15 Deu. 1.17 and 16.9 Ch. 24.23 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked to overthrow the righteous in judgement 6 A fools lips enter into contention his mouth calleth for strukes 7 * Ch. 10.14 12.13 13.3 A fools mouth is his destruction his lips are the snare of his soul 8 * Ch. 12.18 and 26.22 The words of a ‖ Or whisperer tale-bearer are ‖ Or like as when men are wounded as wounds and they go down into the †Heb. chambers innermost parts of the belly 9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster 10 * Ps 18.2 27.1 144.2 The name of the LORD is a strong tower the righteous runneth into it and †Heb. is set aloft is safe 11 * Ch. 10.15 The rich mans wealth is his strong city and as an high wall in his own conceit 12 * Ch. 11.2 15.33 and 16.18 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty and before honour is humility 13 He that †Heb. returneth a word answereth a matter before he heareth it it is folly and shame unto him 14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity but a wounded spirit who can bear 15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge 16 * Ch. 17.8 A mans gift maketh room for him and bringeth him before great men 17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him 18 The lot causeth contentions to cease and parteth between the mighty 19 A brother offended is harder to be won then a
righteously and plead the cause of the poor and needy 10 ¶ * Ch. 12.4 Who can finde a vertuous woman for her price is far above rubies 11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her so that he shall have no need of spoil 12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life 13 She seeketh wool and flax and worketh willingly with her hands 14 She is like the merchants ships she bringeth her food from afar 15 She riseth also while it is yet night and giveth meat to her hous-hold and a portion to her maidens 16 She considereth a field and †Heb. taketh buyeth it with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard 17 She girdeth her loyns with strength and strengthneth her arms 18 †Heb. She tasteth She perceiveth that her merchandise is good her candle goeth not out by night 19 She layeth her hands to the spindle and her hands hold the distaff 20 †Heb. She spreadeth She stretcheth out her hand to the poor yea she reacheth forth her hands to the needy 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her houshold for all her houshold are clothed with ‖ Or double garments scarlet 22 She maketh her self coverings of tapestry her clothing is silk and purple 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sitteth among the elders of the land 24 She maketh fine linen and selleth it and delivereth girdles unto the merchant 25 Strength and honour are her clothing and she shall rejoyce in time to come 26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness 27 She looketh well to the ways of her houshold and eateth not the bread of idleness 28 Her children arise up and call her blessed her husband also and he praiseth her 29 Many daughters ‖ Or have gotten riches have done vertuously but thou excellest them all 30 Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the LORD she shall be praised 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates ¶ ECCLESIASTES or the PREACHER CHAP. I. 1 The preacher sheweth that all humane courses are vain 4 because the creatures are restless in their courses 9 they bring forth nothing new and all old things are forgotten 12 and because he hath found it so in the studies of wisdom THe word of the preacher the son of David king of Jerusalem 2 * Ps 39.5 6. 62.9 144.4 Ch. 12.8 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher vanity of vanities all is vanity 3 * Ch. 2.22 3 9. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun 4 One generation passeth away and another generation cometh * Ps 104.5 119.90 but the earth abideth for ever 5 The sun also ariseth and the sun goeth down and †Heb. panteth hasteth to his place where he arose 6 The wind goâ—th toward the south and turneth about unto the north it whirlâ—th about continually and the wind returneth again according to his circuits 7 * Job 38.10 Ps 104.8.9 All the rivers run into the sea yet the sea is not full unto the place from whence the rivers come thither they †Heb. return to go return again 8 All things are full of labour man cannot utter it the eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with hearing 9 * Ch. 3.15 The thing that hath been it is that which shall be and that which is done is that which shall be done and there is no new thing under the sun 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said See this is new it hath been already of old time which was before us 11 There is no remembrance of former things neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after 12 ¶ I the preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem 13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven this sore travel hath God given to the sons of man ‖ Or to afflict them to be exercised therewith 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun and behold all is vanity and vexation of spirit 15 * Ch. 7.13 That which is crooked cannot be made straight and †Heb. defect that which is wanting cannot be numbred 16 I communed with mine own heart saying Lo I am come to great estate and have gotten * 1 Kin. 4.30 10.7 23. more wisdom then all they that have been before me in Jerusalem yea my heart †Heb. had seen much had great experience of wisdom and knowledge 17 * Ch. 2.12 7.25 And I gave my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit 18 For in much wisdom is much grief and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow CHAP. II. 1 The vanity of humane courses in the works of pleasure 12 Though the wise be better then the fool yet both have one event 18 The vanity of humane labour in leaving it they know not to whom 24 Nothing better then joy in our labour but that is Gods gift I Said in mine heart Go to now I will prove thee with mirth therefore enjoy pleasure and behold this also is vanity 2 I said of laughter It is mad and of mirth What doeth it 3 * Ch 1.17 I sought in mine heart †Heb. to draw my flesh with wine to give my self unto wine yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom and to lay hold on folly till I might see what was that good for the sons of men which they should do under the heaven †Heb. the number of the days of their life all the days of their life 4 I made me great works I builded me houses I planted me vineyards 5 I made me gardens and orchards and I planted trees in them of all kinde of fruits 6 I made me pools of water to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees 7 I got me servants and maidens and had †Heb. sons of my house servants born in my house also I had great possessions of great and small cattel above all that were in Jerusalem before me 8 * 1 Kin. 9.28 10.10 14 21 c. I gathered me also silver and gold and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces I gat me men-fingers and women-fingers and the delights of the sons of men as †Heb. musical instrument instruments musical instruments and that of all sorts 9 So I was great and increased more then all that were before me in Jerusalem also my wisdom remained with me 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them I withheld not my heart from any joy for my heart rejoyced in
that war neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it 9 All this have I seen and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt 10 And so I saw the wicked buried who had come and gone from the place of the holy and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done this is also vanity 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily therefore the heart of the sons of men is â—â—â—ly set in them to do evil 12 ¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times and his days be prolonged yet surely I know that * Ps 37.11 18 19. it shall be well with them that fear God which fear before him 13 But it shall not be well with the wicked neither shall he prolong his days which are as a shadow because he feareth not before God 14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth that there be just men unto whom it * Ps 13.14 hapneth according to the work of the wicked again there be wicked men to whom it hapneth according to the work of the righteous I said that this also is vanity 15 * Ch. 3.22 Then I commended mirth because a man hath no better thing under the sun then to eat and to drink and to be merry for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life which God giveth him under the sun 16 ¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done upon the earth for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes 17 Then I behold all the work of God that a man cannot finde out the work that is done under the sun because though a man labour to seek it out yet he shall not finde it yea further though a wise man think to know it yet shall be not be able to finde it CHAP. IX 1 Like things happen to good and bad 4 There is a necessity of death unto men 7 Comfort is all their portion in this life 11 Gods providence ruleth over all 13 Wisdom is better then strength FOr all this †Heb. I gave or sit to my heart I considered in my heart even to declare all this that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them 2 * Ps 73.3 12 13. Psal 3.15 All things come alike to all there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked to the good and to the clean and to the unclean to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not as is the good so is the sinner and he that sweareth as be that feareth an oath 3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun that there is one event unto all yea also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil and madness is in their heart while they live and after that they go to the dead 4 ¶ For to him that is joyned to all the living there is hope for a living dog is better then a dead lion 5 For the living know that they shall die but the dead know not any thing neither have they any more a reward for the memory of them is forgotten 6 Also their love and their hatred and their envy is now perished neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun 7 ¶ Go thy way eat thy bread with joy and drink thy wine with a merry heart for God now accepteth thy works 8 Let thy garments be always white and let thy head lack no ointment 9 †Heb. see or enjoy life Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity which he hath given thee under the sun all the days of thy vanity * Ch. 2.24 3.13 5.18 for that is thy portion in this life and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do do it with thy might for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest 11 ¶ I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swilt nor the battel to the strong neither yet bread to the wise nor yet riches to men of understanding nor yet favour to men of skill but time and chance hapneth to them all 12 For man also knoweth not his time as the fishes that are taken in an evil net as the birds that are caught in the snare so are the sons of men * Pr. 29.6 snared in an evil time when it falleth suddenly upon them 13 ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun and it seemed great unto me 14 There was a little city and few men within it and there came a great king against it besieged it built great bulwarks against it 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man and he by his wisdom delivered the city yet no man remembred that same poor man 16 * Pr. 21.22 Ch. 7.19 Then said I Wisdom is better then strength nevertheless the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are not heard 17 The words of wâ—se men are heard in quiet more then the cry of him that ruleth among fools 18 Wisdom is better then weapons of war but one sinner destroyeth much good CHAP. X 1 Observations of wisdom and folly â—6 Of â—iot 18 â—lotifuâ—â—â—is 19 and maâ—â—y 20 Mens thoughts of kings ought to be reverent †Heb. Flies of death DEad flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour 2 A wise mans heart is at his right hand but a fools heart is at his lest 3 Yea also when he that is a fool walketh by the way †Heb. his heart his wisdom faileth him and he saith to every one that he is a fool 4 It the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee leave not thy place for yeelding pacifieth great offences 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun as an errour which proceedeth †Heb. from before from the ruler 6 Folly is set †Heb. in great heights in great dignity and the rich sit in low place 7 I have seen servants * Pr. 30.22 upon horses and princes walking as servants upon the earth 8 * Ps 7.15 Pr. 26.27 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it and whoso breaketh an hedge a serpent shall bite him 9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby 10 If the iron be blunt and he do not whet the edge then must he put to more

XXXVI 1 Sennacherib invadeth Judah 4 Raâ—shakeh sent by Sennacherib by blasphemous peâ—swasions sollienteth the people to revolt 22 His words are cold to Hezekiah NOw * 2 King 18.13 2 Chro. 32.1 it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah and took them 2 And the king of Assyriasent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the high-way of the fullers field 3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim Hilkiahs son which was over the house and Shebna the ‖ Or secretary scribe and Joah Asaphs son the recorder 4 ¶ And Rabshakeh said unto them Say ye now to Hezekiah Thus saith the great king the king of Assyria What confidence is this wherein thou trustest 5 I say sayest thou but they are but †Heb. a word of lips vain words ‖ Or But counsel and strength are for the war I have counsel and strength for war now on whom dost thou trust that thou rebellest against me 6 Lo thou trustest in the * Ezek. 29.6 7. staff of this broken reed on Egypt whereon if a man lean it will go into his hand and pierce it so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him 7 But if thou say to me We trust in the LORD our God is it not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away and said to Judah and to Jerusalem Ye shall worship before this altar 8 Now therefore give ‖ Or bostages pledges I pray thee to my master the king of Assyria and I will give thee two thousand horses if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them 9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my masters servants and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for hors-men 10 And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it the LORD said unto me Go up against this land and destroy it 11 ¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh Speak I pray thee unto thy servants in the Syrian language for we understand it and speak not to us in the Jews language in the ears of the people that are on the wall 12 ¶ But Rabshakeh said Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words hath be not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall that they may eat their own dung and drink their own piss with you 13 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews language and said Hear ye the words of the great king the king of Assyria 14 Thus saith the king Let not Hezekiah deceive you for he shall not be able to deliver you 15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD saying The LORD will surely deliver us this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria 16 Hearken not to He ekiah for thus saith the king of Assyria ‖ Or Seek my favour by a present †Heb. Make with me a blessing Make an agreement with me by a present and come out to me and eat ye every one of his vine and every one of his fig-tree and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern 17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land a land of corn and wine a land of bread and vineyards 18 Beware lest Hezekiah perswade you saying The LORD will deliver us Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad where are the gods of Sepharvaim and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand 20 Who are they amongst all the gods of these lands that have delivered their land out of my hand that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand 21 But they held their peace and answered him not a word for the kings commandment was saying Answer him not 22 ¶ Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah that was over the houshold and Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder to Hezekiah with their clothes rent and told him the words of Rabshakeh CHAP. XXXVII 1 Hezekiah mourning sendeth to Isaiah to pray for them 6 Isaiah comforteth them 8 Sennacherih going to encounter Tirhakah sendeth a blasphemous letter to Hezekiah 14 Hezekiahs prayer 21 Isaiah his prophesie of the pride and destruction of Sennacherih and the good of Zion 26 An Angel slayeth the Assyrians 37 Sennacherih is slain at Nineveh by his own sons ANd * 2 Kin. 19.1 c. it came to â—ass when king Hezekiah heard it that he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD 2 And he sent Eliakim who was over the houshold and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz 3 And they said unto him Thus saith Hezekiah This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of ‖ Or provocation blasphemy for the children are come to the birth and there is not strength to bring forth 4 It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard wherefore â—ift up thy prayer for the remnant that is †Heb. found left 5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah 6 ¶ And Isaiah said unto them Thus shall ye say unto your master Thus saith the LORD Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me 7 Behold I will ‖ Or put a spirit into him send a blast upon him and he shall hear a rumour and return to his own land and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land 8 ¶ So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah
the king of Assyria and I will defend this city 7 And this shall be a signe unto thee from the LORD that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken 8 Behold I will bring again the shadow of the degrees which is gone down in the †Heb. degrees by or with the sun sun-dial of Ahaz ten degrees backward So the sun returned ten degrees by which degrees it was gone down 9 ¶ The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah when he had been sick and was recovered of his sickness 10 I said in the cutting off of my days I shall go to the gates of the grave I am deprived of the residue of my years 11 I said I shall not see the LORD even the LORD in the land of the living I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world 12 Mine age is departed and is removed from me as a shepherds tent I have cut off like a weaver my life he will cut me off ‖ Or from the thrum with pining sickness from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me 13 I reckoned till morning that as a lion so will he break all my bones from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me 14 Like a crane or a swallow so did I chatter I did mourn as a dove mine eyes fail with looking upward O LORD I am oppressed ‖ Or case me undertake for me 15 What shall I say he hath both spoken unto me and himself hath done it I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul 16 O Lord by these things men live and in all these things is the life of my spirit so wilt thou recover me and make me to live 17 Behold ‖ Or on my peace came great bitterness for peace I had great bitterness but †Heb. thou hast loved my soul from the pit thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption for thou hast cast all my sins behinde thy back 18 For the grave can not praise thee death cannot celebrate thee they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth 19 The living the living he shall praise thee as I do this day the father to the children shall make known thy truth 20 The LORD was ready to save me therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD 21 For Isaiah had said let them take a lump of figs and lay it for a plaister upon the boyl and he shall recover 22 Hezekiah also had said What is the signe that I shall go up to the house of the LORD CHAP. XXXIX 1 Merodath-baladan sending to visit Hezekiah because of the wonder bath notice of his treasures 3 Isaiah understanding thereof foretelleth the Babylonian captivity AT * 2 Kin. 20.12 c. that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters and a present to Hezekiah for he had heard that he had been sick and was recovered 2 And Hezekiah was glad of them and shewed them the house of his ‖ Or spicery precious things the silver and the gold and the spices and the precions ointment and all the house of his ‖ Or jewels †Heb. verssels or instruments armour and all that was found in his treasures there was nothing in his house nor in all his dominion that Hezekiah shewed them not 3 ¶ Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah and said unto him What said these men and from whence came they unto thee And Hezekiah said They are come from a far countrey unto me even from Babylon 4 Then said he What have they seen in thine house And Hezekiah answered All that is in mine house have they seen there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them 5 Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah Hear the word of the LORD of hosts 6 Behold the days come that all that is in thine house and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day shall be carried to Babylon nothing shall be left saith the LORD 7 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee which thou shalt beget shall they take away and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon 8 Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken he said moreover For there shall be peace and truth in my days CHAP. II. 1 Ezekiels commission 6 His instruction 9 The roll of his heavy prophesie ANd he said unto me Son of man stand upon thy feet and I will speak unto thee 2 And the spirit entred into me when he spake unto me and set me upon my feet that I heard him that spake unto me 3 And he said unto me Son of man I send thee to the children of Israel to a rebellious †Heb. nations nation that hath rebelled against me they and their fathers have transgressed against me even unto this very day 4 For they are †Heb. hard of faâ—e impudent children and stiff-hearted I do send thee unto them and thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD. 5 And they whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are a rebellious house yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them 6 ¶ And thou son of man be not afraid of them neither be afraid of their words though ‖ Or rebels briers and thorns be with thee and thou dost dwell among scorpions be not afraid of their words not be dismayed at their looks though they be a rebellious house 7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are †Heb. rebellion most rebellious 8 But thou son of man hear what I say unto thee Be not thou rebellions like that rebellious house open thy mouth and * Rev. 10.9 eat that I give thee 9 ¶ And when I looked behold an hand was sent unto me and lo a roll of a book was therein 10 And he spread it before me and it was written within and without and there was written therein lamentations and mourning and wo. VIII 1 12 Destruction is threatned for their impiety 5 and idolatry SEt the trumpet to †Heb. thereof of thy moutâ— thy mouth be shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD because they have transgressed my covenant and trespassed against my law 2 Israel shall cry unto me My God we know thee 3 Israel hath cast off the thing that is good the enemy shall pursue him 4 They have set up kings but not by me they have made princes and I knew it not of their silver and their gold have they made them idols that they may be cut off 5 ¶ Thy calf O Samaria hath cast thee off mine anger is kindled against them how long will it be ere they attain to innocency 6 For from Israel was it also the workman made it therefore it is not God but the call of Samaria shall be broken in pieces 7 For they have sown the wind and they shall reap the whirlwind it hath no ‖ Or standingâ—orn stalk the bud shall yeeld no meal if so be it yeeld the strangers shall swallow it up 8 Israel is swallowed up now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure 9 For they are gone up to Assyria a wilde ass alone by himself Ephraim hath hired †Heb. loves lovers 10 Yea though they have hired among the nations now will I gather them and they shall ‖ Or begin sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes 11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin altars shall be unto him to sin 12 I have written to him the great things of my law but they were counted as a strange thing 13 ‖ Or in the sacrifices of mine offerinâ—s they c. They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings and eat it but the LORD accepteth them not now will he remember their iniquity and visit their sins they shall return to Egypt 14 For Israel hath forgotten his maker and buildeth temples and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities but I will send a fire upon his cities and it shall devour the palaces thereof CHAP. IX The distress and captivity of Israel for their sins and idolatry REjoyce not O Israel for joy as other people for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God thou hast loved a * Jer. 44.17 reward ‖ Or in c. upon every corn-floor 2 The floor and the ‖ Or wine-fat wine-press shall not feed them and the new wine shall fail in her 3 They shall not dwell in the LORDs land but Ephraim shall return to Egypt and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria 4 They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD neither shall they be pleasing unto him their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners all that eat thereof shall be polluted for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD 5 What will ye do in the solemn day and in the day of the feast of the LORD 6 For lo they are gone because of †Heb. spoil destruction Egypt shall gather them up Memphis shall bury them ‖ Or their silver shall be desired the nettle c. †Heb. the desire the pleasant places for their silver nettles shall possess them thorns shall be in their tabernacles 7 The days of visitation are come the days of recompence are come Israel shall know it the prophet is a fool the †Heb. man of the spirit spiritual man is mad for the multitude of thine iniquity and the great hatred 8 The watchman of Ephraim was with my God but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways and hatred ‖ Or aâ—ainst in the house of his God 9 They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of * Judg. 19.18 Gibeah therefore he will remember their iniquity he will visit their sins 10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness I saw your fathers as the first-ripe in the fig-tree at her first time but they went to * Numb 25.3 Baal-peor and separated themselves unto that shame and their abominations were according as they loved 11 As for Ephraim their glory shall flie away like a bird from the birth and from the womb and from the conception 12 Though they bring up their children yet will I bereave them that there shall not be

III. 1 Gods judgements against the enemies of his people 9 God will be known in his judgement 18 His blessing upon the church FOr behold in those days and in that time when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem 2 I will also gather all nations and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel whom they have scattered among the nations and parted my land 3 And they have cast lots for my people and have given a boy for a harlot and sold a girl for wine that they might drink 4 Yea and what have ye to do with me O Tyre and Zidon and all the coasts of Palestine will ye render me a recompence and if ye recompense me swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head 5 Because ye have taken my silver and my gold and have carried into your temples my goodly †Heb. desirable pleasant things 6 The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto †Heb. the sins of the Grecians the Grecians that ye might remove them far from their border 7 Behold I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them and will return your recompence upon your own head 8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah and they shall sell them to the Sabeans to a people far off for the LORD hath spoken it 9 ¶ Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles †Heb. sanctifie prepare war wake up the mighty men let all the men of war draw near let them come up 10 * Isa 2.4 Beat your plow-shares into swords and your ‖ Or sithes pruning-hooks into spears let the weak say I am strong 11 Assemble your selves and come all ye heathen and gather your selves together round about thither ‖ Or the LORD shall bring down cause thy mighty ones to come down O LORD 12 Let the heathen be wakened and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about 13 * Rev. 14.15 Put ye in the sickle for the harvest is ripe come get you down for the press is full the sats overflow for their wickedness is great 14 Multitudes multitudes in the valley of ‖ Or concision or threshing decision for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision 15 The * Ch. 2.31 sun and the moon shall be darkned and the stars shall withdraw their shining 16 The LORD also shall * Jer. 25.30 Amos 1.2 roar out of Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem and the heavens and earth shall shake but the LORD will be the †Heb. place of repair or harbour hope of his people and the strength of the children of Israel 17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion my holy mountain then shall Jerusalem be †Heb. holiness holy and there shall no * Rev. 23.27 strangers pass through her any more 18 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that the mountains shall * Amos 9.13 drop down new wine and the hills shall flow with milk and all the rivers of Judah shall †Heb. go flow with waters and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD and shall water the valley of Shittim 19 Egypt shall be a desolation and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness for the violence against the children of Judah because they have shed innocent bloud in their land 20 But Judah shall ‖ Or abide dwell for ever and Jerusalem from generation to generation 21 For I will cleanse their bloud that I have not cleansed ‖ Or even I the LORD that dwelleth in Zion for the LORD dwelleth in Zion ¶ AMOS CHAP. I. 1 Amos sheweth Gods judgement upon Syria 6 upon the Philistines 9 upon Tyrus 11 upon Edom 13 upon Ammon THe words of Amos who was among the herdmen of Tekoa which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel two year before the * Zec 14.5 earthquake 2 And he said the LORD will * Jer. 25.30 Joel 3.16 roar from Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn and the top of Carmel shall wither 3 Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Damascus ‖ Or yea for four and for four I will not ‖ Or â—oâ—vâ—rt it or let it he quiet and to verse 6. c. turn away the punishment thereof because they have threshed Gilead with threshing-instruments of iron 4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael which shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad 5 I will break also the bar of Damascus and cut off the inhabitant from ‖ Or Bikath-aven the plain of Aven and him that holdeth the sceptre from ‖ Or Betheden the house of Eden and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir saith the LORD 6 ¶ Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of * 2

II. 1 God in the care of Jerusalem sendeth to measure it 6 The redemption of Zion 10 The promise of Gods presence I Lift up mine eyes again and looked and behold a man with a measuring-line in his hand 2 Then said I Whither goest thou And he said unto me To measure Jerusalem to see what is the breadth thereof and what is the length thereof 3 And behold the angel that talked with me went forth and another angel went out to meet him 4 And said unto him Run speak to this young man saying Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein 5 For I saith the LORD will be unto her a wall of fire round about and will be the glory in the midst of her 6 ¶ Ho ho come forth and flee from the land of the north saith the LORD for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven saith the LORD 7 Deliver thy self O Zion that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon 8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you for he that * Deu. 32.10 Psa 17.8 toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye 9 For behold I will shake mine hand upon them and they shall be a spoil to their servants and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me 10 ¶ * Isa 12.6 and 54.1 Sing and rejoyce O daughter of Zion for lo I come and I * Lev. 26.12 Ezek. 37.27 2 Cor. 6.16 will dwell in the midst of thee saith the LORD 11 And many nations shall be joyned to the LORD in that day and shall be my people and I will dwell in the midst of thee and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee 12 And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land and shall choose Jerusalem again 13 Be silent O all flesh before the LORD for he is raised up out of †Heb. the habitation of his hâ—liness his holy habitation CHAP. III. 1Vnder the type of Joshua the restauration of the church 8 Christ the Branch is promised ANd he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD and ‖ That is an adversary Satan standing at his right hand †Heb. to â—ebis adversary to resist him 2 And the LORD said unto Satan * Jude 9. IV. 1 By the golden candlestick is foreshewed the good success of Zerubbabels foundation 11 By the two olive-trees the two anointed ones ANd the angel that talked with me came again and waked me as a man that is wakened out of his sleep 2 And said unto me What seest thou And I said I have looked and behold a candlestick all of gold †Heb. with her bowl with a bowl upon the top of it and his seven lamps thereon and ‖ Or seven several pipes to the lamps c. seven pipes to the seven lamps which were upon the top thereof 3 And two olive-trees by it one upon the right side of the bowl and the other upon the left side thereof 4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me saying What are these my lord 5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me Knowest thou not what these be And I said No my lord 6 Then he answered and spake unto me saying This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel saying Not by ‖ Or army might nor by power but by my spirit saith the LORD of hosts 7 Who art thou O great mountain before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain and he shall bring forth the head-stone thereof with shoutings crying Grace grace unto it 8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house his hands shall also finish it and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you 10 For who hath despised the day of small things ‖ Or sith the seven â—es of the LORD shall rejoyce for they shall rejoyce and shall see the †Heb. stone of tin plummet in the hand of Zerubhabel with those seven * Ch. 3.9 they are the eyes of the LORD which run to and fro through the whole earth 11 ¶ Then answered I and said unto him What are these two olive-trees upon the right side of the candlestick upon the left side thereof 12 And I answered again and said unto him What be these two olive-branches which †Heb. by the hand through the two golden pipes ‖ Or empty out of themselves oylinto the gold empty †Heb. the gold the golden oyl out of themselves 13 And he answered me and said Knowest thou not what these be And I said No my lord 14 Then said he These are the two †Heb. sons of oyl anointed ones that stand by the Lord of the whole earth CHAP. V. 1 By the flying roll is shewed the curse of theeves and swearers 5 By a woman pressed
in an ephah the final damnation of Babylon THen I turned and lift up mine eyes and looked and behold a flying roll 2 And he said unto me What seest thou And I answered I see a flying roll the length thereof is twenty cubits and the breadth thereof ten cubits 3 Then said he unto me This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth for ‖ Or every one of this people that stealeth holdeth himself â—uiltless as it doth every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it 4 I will bring it forth saith the LORD of hosts and it shall enter into the house of the thief and into the house of him that sweareth falsly by my name and it shall remain in the midst of his house and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof 5 ¶ Then the angel that talked with me went forth and said unto me Lift up now thine eyes and see what is this that goeth forth 6 And I said What is it And he said This is an ephah that goeth 7 And behold there was lift up a ‖ Or weighty piece talent of lead and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah 8 And he said This is wickedness and he cast it into the midst of the ephah and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof 9 Then lift I up mine eyes and looked and behold there came out two women and the wind was in their wings for they had wings like the wings of a stork and they lift up the ephah between the earth and the heaven 10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me Whither do these bear the ephah 11 And he said unto me To build it an house in the land of Shinar and it shall be established and set there upon her own base CHAP. VI. 1 The vision of the four chariots 9 By the crowns of Joshua is shewed the temple and kingdom of Christ the Branch ANd I turned and lift up mine eyes and looked and behold there came four chariots out from between two mountains and the mountains were mountains of brass 2 In the first chariot were red horses and in the second chariot black horses 3 And in the third chariot white horses and in the fourth chariot grisled and ‖ Or strong bay horses 4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me What are these my lord 5 And the angel answered and said unto me These are the four ‖ Or windeâ— spirits of the heavens which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth 6 The black horses which are therein go forth into the north-countrey and the white go forth after them and the grisled go forth toward the south-countrey 7 And the bay went forth and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth and he said Get ye hence walk to and fro through the earth So they walked to and fro through the earth 8 Then cried he upon me and spake unto me saying Behold these that go toward the north-countrey have quieted my spirit in the north-countrey 9 ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto me saying 10 Take of them of the captivity even of Heldai of Tobijah and of Jedaiah which are come from Babylon and come thou the same day and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah 11 Then take silver and gold and make crowns and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech the high priest 12 And speak unto him saying Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts saying Behold the man whose name is the * Ch. 3.8 BRANCH and he shall ‖ Or branch up from under him grow up out of his place and he shall built the temple of the LORD 13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD and he shall bear the glory and shall sit and rule upon his throne and he shall be a priest upon his throne and the counsel of peace shall be between them both 14 And the crowns shall be to Helem and to Tobijah and to Jedaiah and to Hen the son of Zephaniah for a memorial in the temple of the LORD 15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the LORD and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you And this shall come to pass if ye will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God CHAP. VII 1 The captives enquire of fasting 4 Zechariah reproveth their fasting 8 Sin the cause of their captivity ANd it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius that the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth moneth even in Chisleu 2 When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regem-melech and their men †Heb. to intreat the face of the LORD to pray before the LORD 3 And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of hosts and to the prophets saying Should I weep in the fifth moneth separating my self as I have done these so many years 4 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me saying 5 Speak unto all the people of the land and to the priests saying When ye * Is 58.5 fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh moneth even those seventy years did ye at all fast unto me even to me 6 And when ye did eat and when ye did drink ‖ Or be not ye they that c. did not ye eat for your selves and drink for your selves 7 ‖ Or. Are not these the words Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried †Heb. by the hand of c. by the former prophets when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity and the cities thereof round about her when men inhabited the south and the plain 8 ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah saying 9 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts saying †Heb. judge judgement of truth Execute true judgement and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother 10 And * Ex. 22 21 22. Isa 1.23 Jer. 5.28 oppress not the widow nor the fatherless the stranger nor the poor and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart 11 But they refused to hearken and †Heb. they gave a back-sliding shoulder pulled away the shoulder and †Heb. made heavy stopped their ears that they should not hear 12 Yea they made their hearts as an adamant-stone lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit †Heb. by the hand of by the former prophets therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts 13 Therefore it is
my spirit and little strength is there in me for the great fear wherewith I was affrighted this night 6 Therefore will I now beseech the Highest that he will comfort me unto the end 7 And I said Lord that bearest rule if I have found grace before thy sight and if I am justified with thee before many others and if my prayer indeed be come up before thy face 8 Comfort me then and shew me thy servant the interpretation and plain difference of this fearful vision that thou mayest perfecty comfors my soul 9 For thou hast judged me worthy to shew me the last times 10 And he said unto me This is the interpretation of the vision 11 The eagle whom thou sawest come up from the sea is the kingdom which was seen in the * Dan. 7.7 vision of thy brother Daniel 12 But it was not expounded unto him therefore now I declare it unto thee 13 Behold the days will come that there shall rise up a kingdom upon earth and it shall be feared above all the kingdoms that were before it 14 In the same shall twelve kings reign one after another 15 Whereof the second shall begin to reign and shall have more time then any of the twelve 16 And this do the twelve wings signifie which thou sawest 17 As for the voice which thou heardest speak and that thou sawest not to go out from the heads but from the mids of the body thereof this is the interpretation 18 That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strivings and it shall stand in peril of falling nevertheless it shall not then fall but shall be restored again to his beginning 19 And whereas thou sawest the eight small under-feathers sticking to her wings this is the interpretation 20 That in him there shall arise eight kings whose time shall be but small and their years swift 21 And two of them shall perish the middle time approaching four shall be kept until their end begin to approach but two shall be kept unto the end 22 And whereas thou sawest three heads resting this is the interpretation 23 In his last days shall the most High raise up three kingdoms and renew many things therein they shall have the dominion of the earth 24 And of those that dwell therein with much oppression above all those that were before them therefore are they called the heads of the eagle 25 For these are they that shall accomplish his wickedness and that shall finish his last end 26 And whereas thou sawest that the great head appeared no more it signifieth that one of them shall die upon his bed and yet with pain 27 For the two that remain shall be slain with the sword 28 For the sword of the one shall devour the other but at the last shall he fall through the sword himself 29 And whereas thou sawest two feathers under the wings passing over the head that is on the right side 30 It signifieth that these are they whom the Highest hath kept unto their end this is the small kingdom and full of trouble as thou sawest 31 And the lion whom thou sawest rising up out of the wood and roaring and speaking to the eagle and rebuking her for her unrighteousness with all the words which thou hast heard 32 This is the anointed which the Highest hath kept for them and for their wickedness unto the end he shall reprove them and shall upbraind them with their cruelty 33 For he shall set them before him alive in judgement and shall rebuke them and correct them 34 For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy those that have be in preserved upon my borders and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the day of judgement whereof I have spoken unto thee from the beginning 35 This is the dream that thou sawest and these are the interpretations 36 Thou onely hast been meet to know this secret of the Highest 37 Therefore write all these things that thou hast seen in a book and hide them 38 And teach them to the wise of the people whose hearts thou knowest may comprehend and keep these secrets 39 But wait thou here thy self yet seven days more that it may be shewed thee whatsoever it pleaseth the Highest to declare unto thee And with that he went his way 40 And it came to pass when all the people saw that the seven days were past and I not come again into the city they gathered them all together from the least unto the greatest and came unto me and said 41 What have we offended thee and what evil have we done against thee that thou forsakest us and sittest here in this place 42 For of all the | Oâ— people prophets thou onely art left us as a cluster of the vintage and as a candle in a dark place and as a haven or ship preserved from the tempest 43 Are not the evils which are come to us sufficient 44 If thou shalt forsake us how much better had it been for us if we also had been burnt in the midst of Sion 45 For we are not better then they that died there And they wept with a load voice Then answered I them and said 46 Be of good comfort O Israel and be not heavie thou house of Jacob 47 For the Highest hath you in remembrance and the Mighty hath not forgotten you in temptation 48 As for me I have not forsaken you neither am I departed from you but am come into this place to pray for the desolation of Sion and that I might seek mercy for the low estate of your sanctuary 49 And now go your way home every man and after these days will I come unto you 50 So the people went their way into the city like as I commanded them 51 But I remained still in the field seven days as the angel commanded me and did eat onely in those days of the flowers of the field and had my meat of the herbs CHAP. XIII 1 He seethin bis dream a man coming out of the sea 25 The declaration of â—is dream 54 He is praised and promised to see more ANd it came to pass after seven days I dreamed a dream by night 2 And so there arose | 〈◊〉 man as the wind Junius a wind from the sea that it moved all the waves thereof 3 And I beheld and so that man waxed strong with the | clouâ—s thousands of heaven and when he turned his countenance to look all the things trembled that were seen under him 4 And whensoever the voice went out of his mouth all they burnt that heard his voice like as the earth faileth when it feeleth the fire 5 And after this I beheld and so there was gathered together a multitude of men out of number from the four winds of the heaven to subdue the man that came out of the sea 6 But I beheld and so he had graved himself a great
difficulty which they finde that desire to look into the narrations of the story for the variety of the matter 25 We have been careful that they that will read might have delight and that they that are desirous to commit to memory might have ease and that all into whose hands it comes might have profit 26 Therefore to us that have taken upon us this painful labour of abridging it was not easie but a matter of sweat and watching 27 Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a banquet and seeketh the benefit of others yet ‖ Or to deserve well of many for the pleasuring of many we will undertake gladly this great pains 28 Leaving to the authour the exact handling of every particular and labouring to follow the rules of an abridgement 29 For as the master-builder of a new house must care for the whole building but he that undertaketh to set it out and paint it must seek out fit things for the adorning thereof even so I think it is with us 30 To stand upon every point and go over things at large and to be curious in particulars belongeth to the first authour of the story 31 But to use brevity and avoid much labouring of the work is to be granted to him that will make an abridgement 32 Here then will we begin the story onely adding thus much to that which hath been said That it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue and to be short in the story it self CHAP. III. 1 Of the honour done to the temple by the kings of the Gentiles 4 Simon uttereth what treasures are in the temple 7 Heliodorus is sent to take them away 24 He is stricken of God and healed at the prayer of Onias NOw when the holy city was inhabited with all peace and the laws were kept very well because of the godliness of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness 2 It came to pass that even the kings themselves did honour the place and magnifie the temple with their best gifts 3 Insomuch that Seleucus king of Asia of his own revenues bare all the costs belonging to the service of the sacrifices 4 But one Simon of the tribe of Benjamin who was made governour of the temple fell out with the high priest about disorder in the city 5 And when he could not overcome Onias he gat him to Arollonius the son of Thraseas who then was governour of Celosyria and Phenice 6 And told him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of infinite sums of money so that the multitude of their riches which did not pertain to the account of the sacrifices was innumerable and that it was possible to bring all into the kings hand 7 Now when Apollonius came to the king had shewed him of the the money whereof he was told the king chose out Heliodorus his treasurer and sent him with a commandment to bring him the foresaid money 8 So forthwith Heliodorus took his journey under a colour of visiting the cities of Celosyria and Pâ—â—nice but indeed to fulfil the kings purpose 9 And when he was come to Jerusalem and had been courteously received of the high priest of the city he told him what intelligence was given of the money and declared wherefore he came and asked if these things were so indeed 10 Then the high priest told him that there was such money laid up for the relief of widows and fatherless children 11 And that some of it belonged to Hircanus son of Tobias a man of great digâ—ity and not as that wicked Simon had misinformed the sum whereof in all was four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold 12 And that it was altogether impossible that such wrongs should be done unto them that had committed it to the holiness of the place and to the majesty and inviolable sanctity of the temple honoured over all the world 13 But Heliodorus because of the kings commandment given him said That in any wise it must be brought into the kings treasury 14 So at the day which he appointed he entred in to order this matter wherefore there was no smaâ—l agony throughout the whole city 15 But the priests prostrating themselves before the altar in their priests vestments called unto heaven upon him that made a law concerning things given to bâ— kept that they should safety be preserved for such as had committed them to be kept 16 Then whoso had looked the high priest in the face it would have wounded his heart for his countenance and the changing of his colour declared the inward agony of his minde 17 For the man was so compassed with fear and horrour of the body that it was manifest to them that looked upon him what sorrow he had now in his heart 18 Others ran flocking out of their houses ‖ Or to make general supplication to the general supplication because the place was like to come into contempt 19 And the women girt with sackcloth under their breasts abounded in the streets and the virgins that were kept in ran some to the gates and some to the walls and others looked out of the windows 20 And all holding their hands towards heaven made supplication 21 Then it would have pitied a man to see the falling down of the multitude of all sorts and the †Gr. expectation fear of the high priest being in such an agony 22 They then called upon the almighty Lord to keep the tâ—ings committed of trust safe and sure for those that had committed them 23 Nevertheless Heliodorus executed that which was decreed 24 Now as he was there present himself with his guard about the treasury the ‖ Or Lord of our fathers Lord of spirits and the prince of all power caused a great appatition so that all that presumed to come in with him were astonished at the power of God and fainted and were sore afraid 25 For there appeared unto them an horse with a terrible rider upon him and adorned with a very fair covering and he ran fiercely and smote at Heliodorus with his forefeet and it seemed that he that sat upon the horse had complete harness of gold 26 Moreover two other young men appeared before him notable in strength excellent in beauty and comely in apparel who stood by him on either side and scourged him continually and gave him many sore stripes 27 And Heliodorus fell suddenly unto the ground and was compassed with great darkness but they that were with him took him up and put him into a litter 28 Thus him that lately came with a great train and with all his guard into the said treasury they carried out being unable to help himself with his weapons and manifestly they acknowledged the power of God 29 For he by the hand of God was cast down and lay speechless without all hope of life 30 But they praised the Lord that had miraculously honoured his own place for the temple
unto the dogs neither cast ye your pearls before swine lest they trample them under their feet and turn again and rent you 7 ¶ * Ch. 21.22 Mar. 11.24 Luk. 11.9 Joh. 16.24 Jam. 1.6 Ask and it shall be given you seek and ye shall finde knock and it shall be opened unto you 8 For every one that asketh receiveth and he that seeketh findeth and to him that knocketh it shall be opened 9 Or what man is there of you whom if his son ask bread will he give him a stone 10 Or if he ask a fish will he give him a serpent 11 If ye then being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him 12 Therefore all things * Luke 6.31 whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do ye even so to them for this is the law and the prophets 13 ¶ * Luke 13.24 Enter ye in at the strait gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction many there be which go in thereat 14 ‖ Or bow Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life and few there be that finde it 15 ¶ Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheeps clothing but inwardly they are ravening wolves 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits * Luk. 6.43 Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit 19 * Ch. 3.10 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them 21 ¶ Not every one that saith unto me * Rom. 2.12 Jam. 1.22 Lord Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven 22 Many will say to me in that day Lord Lord have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils and in thy name done many wonderful works 23 And then will I profess unto them * Luke 13.27 I never knew you * Psal 6 8. depart from me ye that work iniquity 24 ¶ Therefore * Luk. 6.47 whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them I will liken him unto a wise man which built his house upon a rock 25 And the rain descended and the flouds came and the winds blew and beat upon that house and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not shall be likened unto a foolish man which built his house upon the sand 27 And the rain descended and the flouds came and the winds blew and beat upon that house and it fell and great was the fall of it 28 And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these sayings * Mar. 1.22 Luk. 4.32 the people were astonished at his doctrine 29 For he taught them as one having authority not as the scribes CHAP. VIII 1 Christ cleanseth the lâ—per 5 healeth the centurions servant 14 Peters mother in law 16 and many other diseased 18 sâ—â—weth how â—e is to be followed 23 stilleth the tempest on the sea 28 driveth the devils out of two men possessed 31 and suffereth them to go into the swine WHen he was come down from the mountain great multitudes followed him 2 * Mar. 1.40 Luk. 5.12 And behold there came a leper and worshipped him saying Lord if thou wilt thou canst make me clean 3 And Jesus put forth his hand and touched him saying I will be thou clean And immediately his leprosie was cleansed 4 And Jesus saith unto him See thou tell no man but go thy way shew thy self to the priest and offer the gift that * Lev. 14.4 Moses commanded for a testimony unto them 5 ¶ * Luk. 7.1 And when Jesus was entred into Capernaum there came unto him a centurion beseeching him 6 And saying Lord my servant lieth at home sick of the palsie grievously tormented 7 And Jesus saith unto him I will come and heal him 8 The centurion answered and said Lord I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof but speak the word onely and my servant shall be healed 9 For I am a man under authority having souldiers under me and I say to this man Go and he goeth and to another Come and he cometh and to my servant Do this and he doeth it 10 When Jesus heard it he marvelled and said to them that followed Verily I say unto you I have not found so great faith no not in Israel 11 And I say unto you that many shall come from the east west and shall sit down with Abraham Isaac Jacob in the kingdom of heaven 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth 13 And Jesus said unto the centurion Go thy way and as thou hast beleeved so be it done unto thee And his servant was healed in the self-same hour 14 ¶ * Mar. 1.29 Luke 4 3â— And when Jesus was come into Peters house he saw his wives mother laid and sick of a fever 15 And he touched her hand and the fever left her and she arose and ministred unto them 16 ¶ * Mar. 1. â—1 Luk. 4.40 When the even was come they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils and he cast out the spirits with his word and healed all that were sick 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying * Isa 52.4 1 Pet. 2.24 Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses 18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him he gave commandment to depart unto the other side 19 * Luk. 9 5â— And a certain scribe came and said unto him Master I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest 20 And Jesus saith unto him The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests but the son of man hath not where to lay his head 21 And another of his disciples said unto him Lord suffer me first to go and bury my father 22 But Jesus said unto him Follow me let the dead bury their dead 23 ¶ And when he was entred into a ship his disciples followed him 24 * Mar. 4.37 Luke 8.23 And behold there arose a great tempest in the sea insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves but he was asleep 25 And his disciples came to him and awoke him saying Lord save us we perish 26 And he saith unto them Why are ye fearful O ye of little faith Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea and
15 And these are they by the way-side where the word is sown but when they have heard Satan cometh immediately and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground who when they have heard the word immediately receive it with gladness 17 And have no root in themselves and so endure but for a time afterward when affliction or persecution ariseth for the words sake immediately they are offended 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns such as hear the word 19 And the cares of this world * 1 Tim. 6.17 and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entring in choke the word and it becometh unfruitful 20 And these are they which are sown on good ground such as hear the word and receive it and bring forth fruit some thirty-fold some sixty and some an hundred 21 ¶ * Matth. 5.5.15 And he said unto them Is a candle brought to be put under a ‖ The word in the original signifieth a less measure as Matth. 5.15 bushel or under a bed and not to be set on a candlestick 22 * Matth. 10.26 For there is nothing hid which shall not be manifested neither was any thing kept secret but that it should come abroad 23 If any man have ears to hear let him hear 24 And he said unto them Take heed what you hear * Matth. 7.2 with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you and unto you that hear shall more be given 25 * Matth. 13.12 For he that hath to him shall be given and he that hath not from him shall be taken even that which he hath 26 ¶ And he said So is the kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed into the ground 27 And should sleep and rise night and day and the seed should spring and grow up he knoweth not how 28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of her self first the blade then the ear after that the full corn in the ear 29 But when the fruit is ‖ Or ripe brought forth immediately he putteth in the sickle because the harvest is come 30 ¶ And he said * Matth. 13.31 Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God or with what comparison shall we compare it 31 It is like a grain of mustard-seed which when it is sown in the earth is less then all the seeds that be in the earth 32 But when it is sown it groweth up and becometh greater then all herbs and shooteth out great branches so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it 33 * Matth. 13.34 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them as they were able to hear it 34 But without a parable spake he not unto them and when they were alone he expounded all things to his disciples 35 * Matth. 8. â—3 And the same day when the even was come he saith unto them Let us pass over unto the other side 36 And when they had sent away the multitude they took him even as he was in the ship and there were also with him other little ships 37 And there arose a great storm of wind and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow and they awake him and say unto him Master carest thou not that we perish 39 And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea Peace be still and the wind ceased and there was a great calm 40 And he said unto them Why are ye so fearful how is it that you have no faith 41 And they feared exceedingly and said one to another What manner of man is this that even the wind and the sea obey him CHAP. V. 1 Christ delivering the possessed of the legion of devils 13 they enter into the swine 25 He healeth the woman of the bloudy issue 35 and raiseth from death Jairus his daughter ANd * Matth. 8.28 they came over unto the other side of the sea into the countrey of the Gadarenes 2 And when he was come out of the ship immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs and no man could binde him no not with chains 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains and the chains had been plucked asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces neither could any man tame him 5 And always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs crying and cuttâ—ng himself with stones 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off he ran and worshipped him 7 And cried with a loud voice and said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of the most high God I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not 8 For he said unto him Come out of the man thou unclean spirit 9 And he asked him What is thy name And he answered saying My name is Legion for we are many 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the countrey 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding 12 And all the devils besought him saying Send us into the swine that we may enter into them 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave And the unclean spirits went out and entred into the swine and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea they were about two thousand and were choked in the sea 14 And they that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the countrey And they went out to see what it was that was done 15 And they come to Jesus and see him that was possessed with the devil and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 16 And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine 17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts 18 And when he was come into the ship he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not but saith unto him Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee and hath had compassion on thee 20 And he departed and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel 21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side much people gathered unto him and he was nigh unto the sea 22 * Matth. 9.18 And behold there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue Jairus by name and when he saw him he fell at his feet 23 And besought him greatly saying My little daughter lieth at the

VIII By occasion of the persecution in Jerusalem the church being planted in Samar a 6 by Philip the deacon who preached did miracles and baptized many among the rest Simon the sorcerer a great seducer of the people 14 Peter and John come to confirm and enlarge the church where by prayer and imposition of hands giving the holy Ghost 18 when Simon would have bought the like power of them 20 Peter sharply reproving his hypocrisie and covetousness and exhorting him to repentance together with John preaching the word of the Lord return to Jerusalem 26 But the angel sendeth Philip to teach and baptize the Ethiopian eunuch ANd Saul was consenting unto his death And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria except the apostles 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great lamentation over him 3 As for Saul he made havock of the church entring into every house and haling men and women committed them to prison 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake hearing and seeing the miracles which he did 7 For unclean spirits crying with loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them and many taken with palsies and that were lame were healed 8 And there was great joy in that city 9 But there was a certain man called Simon which before-time in the same city used sorcery and bewitched the people of Samaria giving out that himself was some great one 10 To whom they all gave heed from the least to the greatest saying This man is the great power of God 11 And to him they had regard because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries 12 But when they beleeved Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized both men and women 13 Then Simon himself beleeved also and when he was baptized he continued with Philip and wondred beholding the miracles and signs which were done 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God they sent unto them Peter John 15 Who when they were come down prayed for them that they might receive the holy Ghost 16 For as yet he was faâ—n upon none of them onely they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus 17 Then laid they their hands on them and they received the holy Ghost 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the holy Ghost was given he offered them money 19 Saying Give me also this power that on whomsoever I lay hands he may receive the holy Ghost 20 But Peter said unto him Thy money perish with thee because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter for thy heart is not right in the sight of God 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness and pray God if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of imquity 24 Then answered Simon and said Pray ye to the Lord for me that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me 25 And they when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord returned to Jerusalem and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans 26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip saying Arise and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza which is desert 27 And he arose and went and behold a man of Ethiopia an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians who had the charge of all her treasure and had come to Jerusalem for to worship 28 Was returning and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip Go near and joyn thy self to this chariot 30 And Philip ran thither to him and heard him read the prophet Esaias and said Understandest thou what thou readest 31 And he said How can I except some man should guide me and he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him 32 The place of the scripture which he read was this * Isa 53.7 He was led as a sheep to the slaughter and like a lamb dumb before his shearer so opened he not his mouth 33 In his humiliation his judgement was taken away and who shall declare his generation for his life is taken from the earth 34 And the eunuch answered Philip and said I pray thee of whom speaketh the prophet this of himself or of some other man 35 Then Philip opened his mouth and began at the same scripture and preached unto him Jesus 36 And as they went on their way they came unto a certain water and the eunuch said See here is water what doth hinder me to be baptized 37 And Philip said If thou beleevest with all thine heart thou mayest And he answered and said I beleeve that Jesus Christ is the Son of God 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still and they went down both into the water both Philip and the eunuch and he baptized
contended with him 3 Saying Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised and didst eat with them 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order unto them saying 5 I was in the city of Joppa praying and in a trance I saw a vision A certain vessel descend as it had been a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners and it came even to me 6 Upon the which when I had fastned mine eyes I considered and saw four-footed beasts of the earth and wilde beasts and creeping things and fowls of the air 7 And I heard a voice saying unto me Arise Peter slay and eat 8 But I said Not so Lord for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entred into my mouth 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven What God hath cleansed that call not thou common 10 And this was done three times and all were drawn up again into heaven 11 And behold immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was sent from Cesarea unto me 12 And the Spirit bade me go with them nothing doubting Moreover these six brethren accompanied me we entred into the mans house 13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him Send men to Joppa and call for Simon whose surname is Peter 14 Who shall tell the words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved 15 And as I began to speak the holy Ghost fell on them * Chap. 2.4 as on us at the beginning 16 Then remembred I the word of the Lord how that he said * John 1. 〈◊〉 John indeed baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us who beleeved on the Lord Jesus Christ what was I that I could withstand God 18 When they heard these things they held their peace and glorified God saying Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life 19 ¶ * Chap. 8.17 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice and Cyprus Antioch preaching the word to none but unto the Jews onely 20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene which when they were come to Antioch spake unto the Grecians preaching the Lord Jesus 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number beleeved and turned unto the Lord. 22 ¶ Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem and they sent forth Barnabas that he should go as far as Antioch 23 Who when he came and had seen the grace of God was glad and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24 For he was a good man and full of the holy Ghost and of faith and much people was added unto the Lord. 25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus for to seek Saul 26 And when he had found him he brought him unto Antioch And it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves ‖ Or. in the church with the church and taught much people and the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch 27 ¶ And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch 28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar 29 Then the disciples every man according to his ability determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea 30 Which also they did and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul CHAP. XII 1 King Herod persecuteth the christians killeth James and imprisoneth Peter whom an angel delivereth upon the prayers of the church 20 In his pride taking to himself the honour due to God he is stricken by an angel and dieth miserably 24 After his death the word of God prospereth NOw about that time Herod the king ‖ Or began stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church 2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews he proceeded further to take Peter also Then were the days of unleavened bread 4 And when he had apprehended him he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of souldiers to keep him intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison but ‖ Or instant and earnest prayer was made prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth the same night Peter was sleeping between two souldiers bound with two chains and the keepers before the door kept the prison 7 And behold the angel of the Lord came upon him and a light shined in the prison and he smote Peter on the side and raised him up saying Arise up quickly And his chains fell off from his hands 8 And the angel said unto him Gird thy self and binde on thy sandals And so he did And he saith unto him Cast thy garment about thee and follow me 9 And he went out and followed him and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel but thought he saw a vision 10 When they were past the first and the second ward they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city which opened to them of his own accord and they went out and passed on through one street and forthwith the angel departed from him 11 And when Peter was come to himself he said Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his angel and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews 12 And when he had considered the thing he came to the house of Mary the Mother of John whose surname was Mark where many were gathered together praying 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate a damsel came ‖ Or to ask who was there to hearken named Rhoda 14 And when she knew Peters voice she opened not the gate for gladness but ran in and told how Peter stood before the gate 15 And they said unto her Thou art mad But she constantly affirmed that it was even so Then said they It is his angel 16 But Peter continued knocking and when they had opened the door and saw him they were astonished 17 But he beckning unto them with the hand to hold their peace declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison And he said Go shew these things unto James and to the brethren And he departed and went into another place 18 Now assoon as it was day there was no small stir among the souldiers what was become of
that light being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus 12 And one Ananias a devout man according to the law having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there 13 Came unto me and stood and said unto me Brother Saul receive thy sight And the same hour I looked up upon him 14 And he said The God of our fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldest know his will and see that just one and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard 16 And now why tarriest thou arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass that when I was come again to Jerusalem even while I prayed in the temple I was in a trance 18 And saw him laying unto me Make haste and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me 19 And I said Lord they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that beleeved on thee 20 * Chap. 7.58 And when the bloud of thy martyr Stephen was shed I also was standing by and consenting unto his death and kept the raiment of them that slew him 21 And he said unto me Depart for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles 22 And they gave him audience unto this word and then lift up their voices and said Away with such a fellow from the earth for it is not sit that he should live 23 And as they cried out and cast off their clothes and threw dust into the air 24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle and bade that he should be examined by scourging that he might know wherefore they cried so against him 25 And as they bound him with thongs Paul said unto the centurion that stood by Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman and uncondemned 26 When the centurion heard that he went and told the chief captain saying Take heed what thou doest for this man is a Roman 27 Then the chief captain came and said unto him Tell me art thou a Roman He said Yea. 28 And the chief captain answered With a great sum obtained I this freedom And Paul said But I was free-born 29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have ‖ Or tortured him examined him and the chief captain also was afraid after he knew that he was a Roman and because he had bound him 30 On the morrow because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews he loosed him from his hands and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear and brought Paul down and set him before them CHAP. XXIII 3 As Paul pleadeth his cause 2 Ananias commandeth them to smite him 7 Dissension among his accusers 11 God encourageth him 14 The Jews laying wait for Paul 20 is declared unto the chief captain 27 He sendeth him to Felix the governour ANd Paul earnestly beholding the council said Men and brethren I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth 3 Then said Paul unto him God shall smite thee thou whited wall for fittest thou to judge me after the law and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law 4 And they that stood by said Revilest thou Gods high priest 5 Then said Paul I wilt not brethren that he was the high priest For it is written * Exod. 22.28 Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people 6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees he cried out in the council Men and brethren * Phil. 3.5 I am a Pharisee the son of a Pharisee * Ch. 24.21 of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question 7 And when he had so said There arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the multitude was divided 8 * Mat. 22.23 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection neither angel nor spirit but the Pharisees confess both 9 And there arose a great cry and the scripes that were of the Pharisees part arose and strove saying We finde no evil in this man but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him let us not fight against God 10 And when there arose a great dissension the chief captain fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them commanded the souldiers to go down and to take him by force from among them and to bring him into the castle 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him and said Be of good cheer Paul for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem so must thou bear witness also at Rome 12 And when it was day certain of the Jews banded together and bound themselves ‖ Or with an oath of execration under a curse saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul 13 And they were more then fourty which had made this conspiracy 14 And they came to the chief priests and elders and said We have bound our selves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul 15 Now therefore ye with the council signifie to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him and we or ever he come near are ready to kill him 16 And when Pauls sisters son heard of their lying in wait he went and entred into the castle and told Paul 17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him and said Bring this young man unto the chief captain for he hath a certain thing to tell him 18 So he took him and brought him to the chief captain and said Paul the prisoner called me unto him and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee who hath something to say unto thee 19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand and went with him aside privately and asked him What is that thou hast to tell me 20 And he said the Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly 21 But do not thou yeeld unto them for there lie in wait for him of them mo then fourty men which have bound themselves with an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him and now are they ready looking for a promise from thee 22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart and charged him See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me 23 And he called unto him two centurions saying Make ready two hundred souldiers
have you ignorant 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led 3 Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus ‖ Or anathema accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the holy Ghost 4 Now * Rom. 12.4 c. there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit 5 And there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God which worketh all in all 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit 9 To another faith by the same Spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit 10 To another the working of miracles to another prophesie to another discerning of spirits to another divers kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues 11 But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit dividing to every man severally as he will 12 For as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is Christ 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jews or †Gr. Greeks Gentiles whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spirit 14 For the body is not one member but many 15 If the foot shall say Because I am not the hand I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 16 And if the ear shall say Because I am not the eye I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 17 If the whole body were an eye where were the hearing if the whole were hearing where were the smelling 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him 19 And if they were all one member where were the body 20 But now are they many members yet but one body 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee nor again the head to the feet I have no need of you 22 Nay much more those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honourable upon these we ‖ Or put on bestow more abundant honour and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness 24 For our comely parts have no need but God hath tempered the body together having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked 25 That there should be no ‖ Or division schism in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another 26 And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it 27 Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular 28 And * Eph. 4.11 God hath set some in the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healings helps governments ‖ Or kinds diversities of tongues 29 Are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all ‖ Or powers workers of miracles 30 Have all the gifts of healing do all speak with tongues do all interpret 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way CHAP. XIII 1 All gifts 2 3 how excellent soever are nothing worth without charity 4 The praises thereof and 13 prelation before hope and faith THough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal 2 And though I have the gift of prophesie and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have no charity I am nothing 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned have not charity it profiteth me nothing 4 Charity suffereth long and is kinde charity envieth not charity ‖ Or is not rash vaunteth not itself is not puffed up 5 Doth not behave it self unseemly seeketh not her own is not easily provoked thinketh no evil 6 Rejoyceth not in iniquity but rejoyceth ‖ Or with the truth in the truth 7 Beareth all things beleeveth all things hopeth all things endureth all things 8 Charity never faileth but whether there be prophesies they shall fail whether there be tongues they shall cease whether there be knowledge it shall vanish away 9 For we know in part and we prophesie in part 10 But when that which is perfect is come then that which is in part shall be done away 11 When I was a childe I spake as a childe I understood as a childe I ‖ Or reasoned thought as a childe but when I became a man I put away childish things 12 For now we see through a glass †Gr. in a riddle darkly but then face to face now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known 13 And now abideth faith hope charity these three but the greatest of these is charity CHAP. XIV 1 Prophesie is commended 2 3 4 and preferred before speaking with tongues 6 by a comparison drawn from musical instruments 12 Both must be referred to edification 22 as to their true and proper end 26 The true use of each is taught 29 and the abuse taxed 34 Women are forbidden to speak in the church FOllow after charity and desire spiritual gifts but rather that ye may prophesie 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man †Gr. beareth understandeth him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesieth edifieth the church 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth then he that speaketh with tongues except he interpret that the church may receive edifying 6 Now brethren if I come unto you speaking with tongues what shall I profit you except I shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying or by doctrine 7 And even things without life giving sound whether pipe or harp except they give a distinction in the ‖ Or a tunes sounds how shall it be known what is piped or harped 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battel 9 So likewise you except ye utter by the tongue words †Gr. significant easie to be understood how shall
justified 17 But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed I make my self a transgressour 19 For I through the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God 20 I am crucified with Christ Nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness come by the law then Christ is dead in vain CHAP. III. 1 He asketh what moved them to leave the faith and hang upon the law 6 They that believe are justified 9 and blessed with Abraham 10 And this he sheweth by many reasons O Foolish Galatians who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you 2 This onely would I learn of you Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 3 Are ye so foolish having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect by the flesh 4 Have ye suffered ‖ Or so great so many things in vain if it be yet in vain 5 He therefore that ministreth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you doeth he it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 6 Even as * Gen. 15.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was ‖ Or imputed accounted to him for righteousness 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith the same are the children of Abraham 8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justifie the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham saying * Gen. 12.3 In thee shall all nations be blessed 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse for it is written * Deu. 27.26 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God it is evident for * Hab. 2.4 Rom. 1.17 Heb. 10. 38. The just shall live by faith 12 And the law is not of faith but * Lev. 18.5 the man that doeth them shall live in them 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us for it is written * Deu. 21.23 Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith 15 Brethren I speak after the manner of men Though it be but a mans ‖ Or testament covenant yet if it be confirmed no man disanulleth or addeth thereto 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made He saith not And to seeds as of many but as of one And to thy seed which is Christ 17 And this I say that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disanul that it should make the promise of none effect 18 For if the inheritance be of the law it is no more of promise but God gave it to Abraham by promise 19 Wherefore then serveth the law It was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediatour 20 Now a mediatour is not a mediatour of one but God is one 21 Is the law then against the promises of God God forbid for if there had been a law given which could have given life verily righteousness should have been by the law 22 But the scripture hath concluded * Rom. 3.9 all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that beleeve 23 But before faith came we were kept under the law shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed 24 Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith 25 But after that faith is come we are no longer under a school-master 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus 27 For * Rom. 6. ◠as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female for ye are all one in Christ Jesus 29 And if ye be Christs then are ye Abrahams seed and heirs according to the promise CHAP. IV. 1 We were under the law till Christ came as the heir is under his guardian till he be of are 5 But Christ freed us from the law 7 therefore we are servants no longer to it 14 He remembreth their good will to him and his to them 22 and sheweth that we are the sons of Abraham by the free-woman NOw I say that the heir as long as he is a childe differeth nothing from a servant though he be lord of all 2 But is under tutours and governours until the time appointed of the father 3 Even so we when we were children were in bondage under the ‖ Or rudiments elements of the world 4 But when the fulness of the time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the law 5 To redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons 6 And because ye are sons God hath sent forth * Rom. 8.15 the Spirit of his Son into your hearts crying Abba Father 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant but a son and if a son then an heir of God through Christ 8 Howbeit then when ye knew not God ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods 9 But now after that ye have known God or rather are known of God how turn ye ‖ Or back again to the weak and beggerly ‖ Or rudiments elements whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage 10 Ye observe days and moneths and times and years 11 I am afraid of you lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain 12 Brethren I beseech you be as I am for I am as ye are ye have not injured me at all 13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first 14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not nor rejected but received me as an angel of God even as Christ Jesus 15 ‖ Or What was thou Where is then the blessedness you spake of for I bear you record that if it had been
the rich and to despise the poor brethren 13 rather we are to be loving and merciful 14 and not to boast of faith where no deeds are 17 which is but a dead faith 19 the faith of devils 21 not of Abraham 25 and Rabab MY brethren have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ the Lord of glory with * Lev. 19.15 Deut. 1.17 and 16.19 Prov. 24.23 respect of persons 2 For if there come unto your †Gr. synagogue assembly a man with a gold ring in goodly apparel and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing and say unto him Sit thou here ‖ Or well or seemly in a good place and say to the poor Stand thou there or sit here under my footstool 4 Are ye not then partial in your selves and are become judges of evil thoughts 5 Hearken my beloved brethren Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith and heirs of ‖ Or that the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him * Lev. 19.18 Rom 13.9 6 But ye have desâ—ised the poor Do not rich men oppress you and draw you before the judgment-seats 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called 8 If ye fulfil the royal saw according to the scripture * Lev. 19.18 Rom 13.9 Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self ye do well 9 But if ye have respect to persons ye commit sin and are convinced of the law as transgressours 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point he is guisty of all 11 For ‖ Or that law which said he that said Do not commit adultery said also Do not kill Now if thou commit no adultery yet if thou kill thou art become a transgressour of the law 12 So speak ye c so do as they the shall be judged by the law of liberty 13 For he shall have judgement without mercy that hath shewed no mercy and mercy ‖ Or glorieth rejoyceth against judgement 14 What doth it profit my brethren though a man say he hath faith and have not works can faith save him 15 If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food 16 And one of you say unto them Depart in peace be you warmed and filled notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body what doth it profit 17 Even so faith if it hath not works is dead being †Gr by it self alone 18 Yea a man may say Thou hast faith and I have works shew me thy faith ‖ Some copies read by thy works without thy works I will shew thee my faith by my works 19 Thou beleevest that there is one God thou doest well the devils also beleeve and tremble 20 But wilt thou know O vain man that faith without works is dead 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar 22 ‖ Or thou seest Seest thou how faith wrought with his works and by works was faith made perfect 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith * Gen. 15.6 Rum 4.3 Gal. 3.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was imputed unto him for righteousness and he was called the friend of God 24 Ye see then how the by works a man is justified not by faith onely 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the Harlot justified by works when she had received the messengers and had sent them out another way 26 For as the body without the ‖ Or breath spirit is dead so faith without works is dead also CHAP. III. 1 We are not rashly or arrogantly to reprove others 5 but rather to bridle the tongue a little member but a powerful instrument of much good and great barm 13 They who be truly wise be midde and peaceable without envying and strife MY brethren be not many masters knowing that we shall receive the greater ‖ Or judgement condemnation 2 For in many things we offend all * Ecclus. 14.1 and 19.16 and 25.8 If any man offend not in word the same is a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body 3 Behold we put bits in the horses mouths that they may obey us and we turn about their whole body 4 Behold also the ships which though they be so great and are driven of fierce winds yet are they turned about with a very small helm whithersoever the governour listeth 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things Behold how great ‖ Or. wood a matter a little fire kindlâ—th 6 And the tongue is a fire a world of iniquity so is the tongue amongst our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature and it is let on fire of hell 7 For every †Gr. nature kinde of beasts and of birds and of serpents and things in the sea is tamed and hath been tamed of †Gr. nature of man mankinde 8 But the tongue can no man tame it is an unruly evil full of deadly poyson 9 Therewith bless we God even the Father and therewith curse we men which are made after the similitude of God 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing My brethren these things ought not so to be 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same ‖ Or bek place sweet water and bitter 12 Can the fig-tree my brethren bear olive-berries either a vine sigs so can no fountain both yeeld salt water and fresh 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge amongst you let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts glory not and lie not against the truth 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above but is earthly ‖ Or natural sensual devilish 16 For where envying and strife is there is †Gr tumult or unquietness confusion and every evil work 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure then peaceable gentle and easte to be intreated full of mercy and good fruits ‖ Or without wrangling without partiality and without hypocrisie 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace CHAP. IV. 1 We are to strive against covetousness 4 intemperance 5 pride 11 detraction and rash judgement of others 13 and not to be confident in the good success of worldly business but mindful ever of the uncertainty of this life to commit our selves and all our affairs to Gods providence FRom whence come wars and ‖ Or brawlings fightings among you come they not hence even of your ‖ Or pleasures lusts that war in your members 2 Ye suit and have not ye kill and desire to have and cannot obtain ye sight
He teacheth the duty of wives and husbands to each other 8 exhorting all men to unity and love 14 and to suffer persecution 19 He declareth also the benefits of Christ toward the old world LIkewise * Eph. 5.22 Col. 3.18 ye wives is in subjection to your own husbands that if any obey not the worâ— they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear 3 * â— Tim. 2.9 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair and of wearing of goâ—â— or of putting on of apparel 4 But let it be the hidden man or the heart in that which is not corruptible even the ornament of a meeâ— and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God of great price 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also who trusted in God adorned themselves being in subjection unto their own husbands 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham * Gen. 18.12 calling him lord whose †Gr. children daughters ye are as long as ye do well are not afraid with any amazement 7 Likewise ye husbands dwell with them according to knowledge giving honour unto the wise as unto the weaker vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life that your prayers be not hindâ—ed 8 Finally be ye all of one minde having compassion one of another ‖ Or loving to the brethren love as brethren be pitiful be courteous 9 * Pr. 17.13 20.22 Rom. 12.17 2 Th. 5.15 Not rendring evil for evil or raising for raising but contrariwise blessing knowing that ye are thereunto called that ye should inherit a blessing 10 * Ps 34.12 c. he that will love life and see good days let him refrain his tongue from evil and his lips that they speak no guile 11 Let him * Is 1.16 eschew evil and do good let him seek peace ensure it 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous and his ears are open unto their prayers but the face of the Lord is †Gr. upon against them that do evil 13 And who is he that will harm you if ye be followers of that which is good 14 * Mat. 5.10 But and if ye suffer for righteousness sake happy are ye and * Is 8.12 13. be not afraid of their terrrour neither be troubled 15 But sanctifie the Lord God in your hearts and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and ‖ Or reverence fear 16 * Ch. 2.12 Having a good conscience that whereas they speak evil of you as of evil doers they may be ashamed that fastly accuse your good conversation in Christ 17 For it is better if the will of God be so that ye suffer for wel-doing then for evil-doing 18 For Christ also hath * Rom. 5.6 Heb. 9.38 once suffered for sins the just for the unjust that he might bring us to God being put to death in the flesh but quickned by the Spirit 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison 20 Which sometime were disobedient * Gen. 6. when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah while the ark was a preparing wherein few that is eight souls were saved by water 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us nor the putting away of the fifth of the flesh but the answer of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ 22 Who is gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him CHAP. IV. 1 He exhorteth them to cease from sin by the example of Christ and the consideration of the general end that now approacheth 12 and comforteth them against persecution FOrasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh arm your selves likewise with the same minde for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men but to the will of God 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness lusts excess of wine revellings banquettings and abominable idolatries 4 Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot speaking evil of you 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead 6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit 7 But the end of all things is at hand be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer 8 And above all things have fervent charity among your selves for * Pr. 1â— 12 charity ‖ Or will shall cover the multitude of sins 9 * Rom. 12.13 Heb. 13.2 Use hospitality one to another without grudging 10 * Rom. 12.6 As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God 11 If any man speak let him speak as the oracles of God if any man minister let him do it as of the ability which God giveth that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever Amen 12 Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you as though some strange thing happened unto you 13 But rejoyce in as much as ye are partakers or Christs sufferings that when his glory shall be revealed ye may be glad also with exceeding joy 14 * Mat. â— 11 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ happy are ye for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you on their part he is evil spoken of but on your part he is glorified 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or as a thief or as an evil-doer or as a busie-body in other mens matters 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian let him not be ashamed but let him glorifie God on this behalf 17 For the time is come that judgement must begin at the house of God and if it first begin at us what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God 18 * Pr. 11.31 And if the righteous scarcely be saved where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well-doing as unto a faithful Creatour CHAP. V. 1 He exhorteth the elders to feed their flocks 5 the younger to obey 8 and all to be sober
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
into lasciviousness and denying the onely Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance though ye once knew this how that the Lord having saved the people out of the land of Egypt afterward * Num. 14.37 destroyed them that beleeved not 6 And * 2 Pet. 2.4 the angels which kept not their ‖ Or principality first eslate but lest their own habitation he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgement of the great day 7 Even as * Gen. 19.24 Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner giving themselves over to fornication and going after †Gr. other strange flesh are set forth for an example suffering the vengeance of eternal fire 8 * 2 Pet. 2.10 11. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh despise dominion and speak evil of dignities 9 Yet Michael the archangel when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses durst not bring against him a railing accusation but said * Zech. 3.2 The Lord rebuke thee 10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not but what they know naturally as brute beasts in those things they corrupt themselves 11 Wo unto them for they have gone in the way of Cain and * 2 Pet. 2.15 ran greedily after the errour of Balaam for reward and perished in the gain-saying of Core 12 These are spots in your feasts of charity when they feast with you seeding themselves without fear * 2 Pet. 2.17 clouds they are without water carried about of winds trees whose fruit withereth without fruit twice dead plucked up by the roots 13 Raging waves of the sea foaming out their own shame wandring stars to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever 14 And Enoch also the seventh from Adam prophesied of these saying Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints 15 To execute judgement upon all and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him 16 These are murmurers complainers walking after their own lusts and their mouth speaketh great swelling words having mens persons in admiration because of advantage 17 But beloved remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ 18 How that they told you * 1 Tim. 4.1 2 Tim. 3.1 2 Pet. 3.3 there should be mockers in the last time who should walk after their own ungodly lusts 19 These be they who separate themselves sensual having not the Spirit 20 But ye beloved building up yourselves on your most holy faith praying in the holy Ghost 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life 22 And of some have compassion making a difference 23 And others save with fear pulling them out of the fire hating even the garment spotted by the flesh 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy 25 To the onely wise God our Saviour be glory and majesty dominion and power both now and ever Amen ¶ The REVELATION of S. JOHN the Divine CHAP. XI 3 The two witnesses prophesie 6 They have power to shut heaven that it ram not 7 The beast shall fight against them and kill them 8 They lie unburied 11 and after three days and an half rise again 14 The second wo is past 15 The seventh trumpet soundeth ANd there was given me a reed like unto a rod and the angel stood saying Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and them that worship therein 2 But the court which is without the temple †Gr. cast out leave out and measure it not for it is given unto the Gentiles and the holy city shall they tread under foot fourty and two moneths 3 And ‖ Or I will give unto my two witnesses that they may prophesie I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 4 These are the * Zech. 4.3.11.14 two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 5 And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 6 These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophesie and have power over waters to turn them to bloud and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an hall and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 10 And they that dwell upon the earn shall rejoyce over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to another because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth 11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entred into them and they stood upon their feet and great fear fell upon them which saw them 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them Come up hither And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earthquake ware slain †Gr. names of men of men seven thousand and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven 14 The second wo is past and behold the third wo cometh quickly 15 And the seventh angel sounded and there were great voices in heaven saying The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever 16 And the four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats fell upon their faces and worshipped God 17 Saying We give thee thanks O Lord God Almighty which art and wast and art to come because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned 18 And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come and the time of the dead that they should be judged and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets and to the saints and them that fear thy name small and great and shouldest destroy them which ‖ Or corrupt destroy the earth 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament and there were lightnings and voices and thundrings and an earthquake and great hail CHAP. XII 1 A woman clothed with the sun travaileth 4 The great red dragon standeth before her ready to devour her childe 6 when she was delivered she fleeth into the wilderness 7 Michael and his angels fight with the dragon and prevail 13 The dragon being cast down into the earth persecuteth the woman ANd there appeared a great ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars 2 And she being with childe cried travailing in birth and pained to be delivered 3 And there appeared another ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her childe assoon as it was born 5 And she brought forth a man-childe who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her childe was caught up unto God and to his throne 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days 7 And there was war in heaven Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels 8 And prevailed not neither was there place found any more in heaven 9 And the great dragon was cast out that
If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 12 Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the saith of Jesus 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ‖ Or from henceforth saith the Spirit Yea. from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 14 And I looked and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle 15 And another angel came out of the temple crying with a load voice to him that sat on the cloud * Joel 3.13 Thrust in thy sickle and reap for the time is come for thee to reap for the harvest of the earth is ‖ Or dried ripe 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven he also having a sharp sickle 18 And another angel came out from the altar which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great wine-press of the wrath of God 20 And the wine-press was troden without the city and bloud came out of the wine-press even unto the horse-bridles by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs CHAP. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP. XVI 2 The angels pour out thrir vials full of wrath 6 The plagues that follow thereupon 15 Christ cometh as a thief Blessed are they that watch ANd I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels Go your ways and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth 2 And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth and there fell a noisom and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast and upon them which worshipped his image 3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the bloud of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea 4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters and they became bloud 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say Thou art righteous O Lord which art and wast and shalt be because thou hast judged thus 6 For they have shed the bloud of saints and prophets and thou hast given them bloud to drink for they are worthy 7 And I heard another out of the altar say Even so Lord God Almighty true and righteous are thy judgements 8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire 9 And men were ‖ Or burned scorched with great heat and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues and they repented not to give him glory 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness and they gnawed their tongues for pain 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds 12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14 For they are the spirits of devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 15 * Matth. 24.43 Chap. 3 3◠Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying it is done 18 And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 19 And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great
And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth * Ezek. 3â— 2 39.1 Gog and Magog to gather them together to battel the number of whom is as the sand of the sea 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth and compassed the camp of the saints about and the beloved city and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them 10 And the devil that deceived thâ—m was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever 11 And I saw a great white throne and him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for them 12 And I saw the dead small and great stand before God * Dan. 7.10 and the books were opened and another * Chap. 3.5 book was opened which is the book of life and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it and death and ‖ Or the grave hell delivered up the dead which were in them and they were judged every man according to their works 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire This is the second death 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire CHAP. XXI 1 A new heaven and a new earth 10 The heavenly Jerusalem with a full description thereof 23 She needeth no sun the glory of God is her light 24 The kings of the earth bring their riches unto her ANd * Isa 65.17 2 Pet. 3.13 I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 2 And I John saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying Behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God 4 * Chap. 7.17 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away 5 And he that sat upon the throne said * Isa 43.19 2 Cor. 5.17 Behold I make all things new And he said unto me Write for these words are true and faithful 6 And he said unto me It is done * Chap. 1.8 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end * Isa 55.1 I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he shall be my son 8 But the fearful and unbeleeving and the abominable and murderers and whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying Come hither I will shew thee the bride the Lambs wife 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and shewed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God 11 Having the glory of God and her light was like unto a stone most precious even like a jasper stone clear as crystal 12 And had a wall great and high and had twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel 13 On the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates and on the west three gates 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall thereof 16 And the city lieth four-square and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal 17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and fourty and four cubits according to the measure of a man that is of the angel 18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper and the city was pure gold like unto clear glass 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones The first foundation was jasper the second sapphire the third a chalcedony the fourth an emerald 20 The fifth sardonyx the sixth sardius the seventh chrysolite the eighth beryl the ninth a topaz the tenth a chrysoprasus the eleventh a jacinct the twelfth an amethyst 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls every several gate was of one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass 22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it 23 * Isa 60 â—â— And the city had no need of the sun neither of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it and the Lamb is the light thereof 24 * Isa 60. â— And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it 25 * Isa 60.11 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night there 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie but they which are written in the Lambs * Phil. 4.3 Chap. 3.5 and 20.12 book of life CHAP. XXII 1 The river of the water of life 2 The tree of life 5 The light of the city of God is himself 9 The angel will not be worshipped 18 Nothing may be added to the word of God nor taken therefrom ANd he shewed me a pure river of water of life clear as erystal proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it and of either side of the river was there the tree of life which bare twelve manner of fruits and yeelded her fruit every moneth and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations 3 And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it and his servants shall serve him 4 And they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads 5 * Chap. 2â— 23 And there shall be no night there and they need no candle neither light of the sun for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever 6 And he said unto me These sayings are faithful and true And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done 7 Behold I come quickly blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophesie of this book 8 And I John saw these things and heard them And when I had heard and seen I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things 9 Then saith he unto me * Chap. 19.10 See thou do it not for I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren the prophets and of them which keep the sayings of this book worship God 10 And he saith unto me Seal not the sayings of the prophesie of this book for the time is at hand 11 He that is unjust let him be unjust still and he which is filthy let him be filthy still and he that is righteous let him be righteous still and he that is holy let him be holy still 12 And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me * Rom. 2.6 to give every man according as his work shall be 13 I am Alpha and Omega * Isa 41.4 and 44.6 Chap. 1.8 and 21.6 the beginning and the end the first and the last 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city 15 For without are dogs and sorcerers and whoremongers and murderers and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testifie unto you these things in the churches I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright and morning star 17 And the Spirit and the Bride say Come And let him that heareth say Come * Isa 55.1 And let him that is athirst come And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely 18 For I testifie unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesie of this book * Deut. 4.2 Prov. 30 6. If any man shall add unto these things God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophesie God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book 20 He which testifieth these things saith Surely I come quickly Amen Even so Come Lord Jesus 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all Amen FINIS
last things high things which the most High will do unto them that dwell upon earth in the last days So I slept that night and another like as he commanded me CHAP. XI 1 He seeth in his dream an eagle coming out of the sea 37 and a lion out of a wood talking to the eagle THen saw I a dream and behold there came up from the sea an eagle which had twelve feathered wings and three heads 2 And I saw and behold she spread her wings over all the earth and all the winds of the air blew on her and were gathered together 3 And I beheld and out of her feathers there grew other contrary feathers and they became little feathers and small 4 But her heads were at rest the head in the midst was greater then the other yet rested †Lat. sa it with the residue 5 Moreover I beheld and so the eagle flew with her feathers and reigned upon earth and over them that dwelt therein 6 And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her and no man spake against her no not one creature upon earth 7 And I beheld and so the eagle rose upon her talons and spake to her feathers saying 8 Watch not all at once sleep every one in his own place and watch by course 9 But set the heads be preserved for the last 10 And I beheld and so the voice went not out of her heads but from the midst of her body 11 And I numbred her contrary feathers and behold there were eight of them 12 And I looked and behold on the right side there arose one feather and reigned over all the earth 13 And so it was that when it reigned the end of it came and the place thereof appeared no more so the next following stood up and reigned and had a great time 14 And it hapned that when it reigned the end of it came also like as the first so that it appeared no more 15 Then came there a voice unto it and said 16 Hear thou that hast born rule over the earth so long this I say unto thee before thou beginnest to appear no more 17 There shall none after thee attain unto thy time neither unto the half thereof 18 Then arose the third and reigned as the other before and appeared no more also 19 So went it with all the residue one after another as that every one reigned and then appeared no more 20 Then I beheld and so in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side that they might rule also and some of them ruled but within a whise they appeared no more 21 For some of them were set up but ruled not 22 After this I looked and behold the twelve feathers appeared no more nor the two little feathers 23 And there was no more upon the eagles body but three heads that rested and six little wings 24 Then saw I also that two little feathers divided themselves from the six and remained under the head that was upon the right side for the four continued in their place 25 And I beheld and so the feathers that were under the wing thought to set up themselves and to have the rule 26 And I beheld and so there was one set up but shortly it appeared no more 27 And the second was sooner away then the first 28 And I beheld and so the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign 29 And when they so thought behold there awaked one of the heads that were at rest namely it that was in the midst for that was greater then the two other heads 30 And then I saw that the two other heads were joyned with it 31 And behold the head was turned with them that were with it and did eat up the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned 32 But this head put the whole earth in fear and bare rule in it over all those that dwelt upon the earth with much oppression and it had the governance of the world more then all the wings that had been 33 And after this I beheld and so the head that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more like as the wings 34 But there remained the two heads which also in like sort ruled upon the earth and over those that dwelt therein 35 And I beheld and so the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side 36 Then I heard a voice which said unto me Look before thee and consider the thing that thou seest 37 And I beheld and so as it were a roaring lion chased out of the wood and I saw that he sent out a mans voice unto the eagle and said 38 Hear thou I will talk with thee and the Highest shall say unto thee 39 Art not thou it that remainest of the four beasts whom I made to reign in my world that the end of their times might come through them 40 And the fourth came and over came all the beasts that were past and had power over the world with great fearfulness and over the whole compass of the earth with much wicked oppression and so long time dwelt he upon the earth with deceit 41 For the earth hast thou not judged with truth 42 For thou hast afflicted the meek thou hast hurt the peaceable thou hast loved liars and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit and hast cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm 43 Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the Highest and thy pride unto the Mighty 44 The Highest also hath looked upon the proud times and behold they are ended and his abominations are fulfilled 45 And therefore appear no more thou eagle nor thy horrible wings nor thy wicked feathers nor thy malicious heads nor thy hurtful claws nor all thy vain body 46 That all the earth may be refreshed and may return being delivered from thy violence and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her CHAP. XII 1 The eacle which be saw is destroyed 10 The vision is interpreted 37 He is bid to write his visions 39 and to fast that he may see more 46 He doth comfort those that were grieved for his absence ANd it came to pass whiles the lion spake these words unto the eagle I saw 2 And behold the head that remained and the four wings appeared no more and the two went unto it and set themselves up to reign and their kingdom was small and full of uproar 3 And I saw and behold they appeared no more and the whole body of the eagle was burnt so that the earth was in great fear then awaked I out of the trouble and trance of my minde and from great fear and said unto my spirit 4 Lo this hast thou done unto me in that thou searchest out the ways of the Highest 5 Lo yet am I weary in my minde and very weak in
