more_o cause_n to_o fear_v moreover_o such_o fear_n in_o the_o child_n of_o god_n do_v often_o arise_v from_o the_o mistake_n of_o thing_n and_o from_o their_o imagination_n of_o that_o that_o be_v not_o so_o we_o do_v see_v before_o that_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n fear_v upon_o imagination_n that_o they_o have_v see_v a_o spirit_n when_o they_o see_v he_o so_o many_o of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n have_v in_o all_o age_n fear_v and_o now_o do_v often_o fear_v because_o they_o judge_v not_o aright_o of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o themselves_o but_o think_v they_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o no_o love_n at_o all_o etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o no_o assurance_n at_o all_o of_o god_n favour_n and_o of_o their_o own_o salvation_n because_o their_o faith_n love_n and_o other_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v weak_a and_o come_v short_a of_o that_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v because_o they_o be_v able_a to_o distinguish_v between_o a_o nullity_n and_o a_o imperfection_n of_o god_n gift_n accompany_v salvation_n in_o they_o therefore_o they_o think_v that_o to_o be_v a_o nullity_n that_o be_v only_o a_o imperfection_n it_o be_v also_o with_o the_o godly_a in_o this_o other_o for_o a_o time_n viz._n so_o long_o as_o they_o live_v so_o careless_o and_o till_o they_o have_v purge_v themselves_o of_o such_o sin_n as_o whereby_o not_o only_o the_o write_n of_o their_o pardon_n be_v blur_v and_o make_v unlegible_a but_o also_o their_o own_o sight_n be_v dim_v so_o as_o they_o neither_o can_v read_v their_o pardon_n nor_o see_v any_o thing_n else_o touch_v their_o world_n mark_v the_o history_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n from_o the_o begin_n to_o the_o end_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o always_o the_o great_a affliction_n do_v follow_v the_o best_a of_o god_n child_n the_o best_a patriarch_n the_o best_a prophet_n the_o most_o holy_a man_n of_o other_o sort_n the_o like_a be_v to_o be_v say_v of_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o the_o apostle_n have_v receive_v great_a gift_n from_o god_n than_o other_o so_o they_o be_v the_o more_o persecute_v by_o man_n then_o other_o the_o apostle_n paul_n speak_v of_o himself_o and_o of_o the_o rest_n of_o to_o all_o his_o child_n alike_o to_o be_v so_o call_v &_o to_o be_v indeed_o his_o child_n it_o must_v therefore_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o end_n for_o which_o he_o do_v so_o viz._n that_o for_o the_o logical_a resolution_n and_o plain_a lay_v forth_o of_o all_o the_o word_n now_o remain_v to_o return_v now_o to_o our_o similitude_n and_o likeness_n unto_o christ_n let_v this_o be_v first_o observe_v that_o the_o apostle_n say_v not_o we_o shall_v be_v equal_a but_o only_o like_a unto_o christ_n the_o word_n equal_a and_o like_a do_v much_o differ_v the_o first_o be_v use_v mat._n 20._o 12._o these_o last_o have_v labour_v but_o one_o hour_n &_o thou_o have_v make_v they_o equal_a unto_o we_o that_o have_v bear_v the_o weight_n and_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o day_n but_o they_o be_v but_o the_o member_n christ_n be_v the_o elder_a brother_n they_o but_o the_o second_o brethren_n christ_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o natural_a son_n of_o god_n by_o communication_n of_o the_o whole_a divine_a essence_n unto_o he_o as_o he_o be_v god_n and_o by_o the_o personal_a union_n of_o the_o godhead_n to_o the_o manhood_n and_o the_o miraculous_a and_o immediate_a conception_n of_o he_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o he_o be_v man_n as_o before_o have_v be_v show_v but_o we_o of_o who_o here_o the_o apostle_n speak_v be_v but_o the_o child_n of_o god_n by_o grace_n by_o adoption_n and_o by_o incorporation_n into_o christ_n etc._n etc._n christ_n be_v anoint_v with_o the_o oil_n of_o gladness_n with_o the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n knowledge_n fortitude_n etc._n etc._n without_o measure_n so_o that_o in_o he_o be_v hide_v all_o the_o treasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o the_o godhead_n also_o dwell_v in_o he_o bodily_a that_o be_v substantial_o but_o we_o have_v every_o one_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o our_o several_a measure_n according_a to_o our_o several_a place_n and_o god_n spirit_n dwell_v in_o we_o by_o the_o effect_n thereof_o even_o such_o grace_n whereby_o we_o do_v here_o represent_v god_n and_o be_v say_v to_o be_v frame_v according_a to_o the_o likeness_n and_o similitude_n of_o god_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n christ_n be_v the_o king_n of_o his_o church_n and_o the_o lord_n of_o all_o thing_n we_o be_v but_o his_o subject_n though_o in_o a_o high_a degree_n of_o honour_n then_o the_o rest_n christ_n be_v the_o chief_a corner_n stone_n we_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o building_n etc._n etc._n as_o by_o these_o thing_n and_o other_o the_o like_a we_o see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v be_v equal_a to_o christ_n so_o by_o many_o other_o thing_n we_o may_v see_v great_a reason_n yea_o diverse_a reason_n why_o we_o shall_v be_v partaker_n of_o this_o similitude_n and_o likeness_n unto_o christ_n whereof_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v moreover_o let_v we_o well_o consider_v why_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v in_o the_o future_a tense_n and_o say_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v like_a unto_o he_o for_o some_o man_n may_v stumble_v at_o this_o phrase_n as_o gather_v thereby_o that_o in_o this_o life_n the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v not_o like_a unto_o observe_v for_o the_o comfort_n as_o well_o of_o woman_n as_o of_o man_n and_o for_o the_o instruction_n as_o afterward_o we_o shall_v hear_v of_o one_o sex_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n allege_v the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n himself_o speak_v in_o this_o manner_n i_o will_v be_v a_o father_n unto_o you_o and_o you_o shall_v the_o matter_n of_o salvation_n although_o the_o scripture_n do_v both_o express_o say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o exception_n of_o male_a or_o female_a with_o god_n but_o that_o all_o be_v one_o in_o christ_n jesus_n galat._n 3._o 28._o and_o although_o it_o do_v also_o record_v unto_o we_o example_n as_o well_o of_o believe_v woman_n as_o of_o believe_v man_n but_o what_o do_v the_o apostle_n member_n and_o that_o because_o of_o the_o outward_a covenant_n of_o god_n make_v with_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v say_v the_o son_n of_o god_n see_v the_o daughter_n of_o man_n that_o they_o be_v fair_a etc._n etc._n genes_n 6._o 2._o here_o the_o son_n of_o god_n do_v signify_v such_o as_o profess_v themselves_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o so_o be_v of_o the_o visible_a church_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n also_o our_o saviour_n himself_o call_v the_o jew_n even_o in_o his_o time_n general_o by_o the_o name_n of_o child_n say_v it_o be_v not_o meet_v to_o take_v the_o child_n bread_n and_o to_o cast_v it_o to_o whelp_n matt._n 15._o 26._o second_o this_o title_n the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v take_v for_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n and_o that_o be_v regenerate_v by_o the_o immortal_a seed_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o it_o be_v take_v in_o the_o place_n before_o and_o as_o wesay_v from_o the_o tooth_n it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v but_o as_o the_o laughter_n of_o frenzy_n and_o madness_n in_o the_o pang_n of_o death_n second_o it_o be_v therefore_o very_o short_a and_o uncertain_a as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o laughter_n of_o a_o fool_n that_o it_o be_v like_o the_o crack_n of_o thorn_n under_o a_o pot_n eccl._n 7._o 8._o though_o it_o make_v a_o great_a blaze_n &_o a_o loud_a noise_n for_o a_o time_n yet_o on_o a_o sudden_a it_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o three_o which_o be_v more_o than_o the_o former_a the_o more_o the_o wicked_a laugh_n and_o be_v merry_a here_o the_o more_o they_o shall_v weep_v and_o mourn_v and_o howl_v in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v as_o the_o strong_a wine_n make_v the_o sharp_a vinegar_n even_o such_o as_o will_v fetch_v off_o the_o skin_n from_o the_o rough_a of_o one_o mouth_n so_o the_o great_a shall_v be_v their_o calamity_n and_o their_o great_a joy_n shall_v be_v turn_v into_o the_o great_a heaviness_n but_o because_o many_o thing_n before_o write_v of_o the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o wicked_a may_v likewise_o be_v refer_v to_o that_o point_n of_o their_o joy_n which_o arise_v from_o no_o other_o cause_n then_o from_o their_o prosperity_n therefore_o i_o will_v here_o cease_v to_o write_v any_o more_o thereof_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n of_o the_o joy_n and_o peace_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n as_o they_o have_v better_a cause_n of_o peace_n and_o joy_n then_o all_o the_o wicked_a in_o the_o world_n though_o king_n and_o prince_n so_o their_o peace_n and_o joy_n can_v but_o be_v much_o great_a how_o poor_a base_a and_o miserable_a soever_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o the_o world_n and_o be_v indeed_o touch_v their_o outward_a state_n they_o may_v rejoice_v when_o the_o wicked_a even_o prince_n may_v mourn_v they_o may_v laugh_v when_o such_o may_v weep_v they_o may_v sing_v when_o the_o other_o for_o all_o their_o wealth_n pleasure_n friend_n power_n and_o authority_n and_o glory_n may_v cry_v and_o howl_v as_o the_o virgin_n mary_n be_v salute_v in_o this_o manner_n bail_n mary_n or_o rejoice_n mary_n thou_o be_v free_o belon_v the_o lord_n be_v with_o thou_o etc._n etc._n and_o again_o fear_v not_o for_o thou_o have_v find_v favour_n with_o god_n for_o thou_o shall_v conceive_v in_o thy_o womb_n &_o bear_v a_o son_n and_o call_v sa._n 15._o 32._o yetwofull_a without_o repentance_n shall_v their_o reward_n be_v at_o the_o last_o when_o they_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o have_v be_v better_a the_o great_a the_o proud_a and_o mighty_a of_o they_o all_o to_o have_v bite_v their_o finger_n end_n to_o the_o bone_n to_o have_v eat_v the_o flesh_n from_o their_o arm_n or_o to_o have_v go_v a_o thousand_o mile_n of_o a_o errand_n &_o that_o on_o their_o bare_a foot_n all_o the_o while_n upon_o thorn_n then_o to_o have_v do_v any_o hurt_n to_o the_o least_o to_o the_o poor_a and_o to_o the_o mean_a of_o god_n child_n last_o of_o all_o the_o more_o any_o king_n reward_v any_o kindness_n do_v to_o any_o of_o his_o child_n or_o punish_v any_o indignity_n offer_v unto_o they_o the_o more_o he_o show_v himself_o to_o regard_v such_o as_o have_v receive_v such_o kindness_n or_o meet_v with_o such_o indignity_n and_o the_o more_o he_o do_v grace_n and_o honour_v they_o before_o his_o people_n that_o see_v his_o reward_n upon_o such_o as_o have_v show_v that_o kindness_n or_o that_o hear_v of_o his_o severity_n against_o such_o as_o have_v offer_v that_o indignity_n i_o conclude_v therefore_o the_o like_a of_o the_o dignity_n and_o honourable_a state_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o gracious_a promise_n make_v and_o perform_v to_o any_o that_o show_v but_o the_o least_o kindness_n towards_o the_o least_o of_o his_o child_n as_o likewise_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o indignation_n threaten_v and_o execute_v upon_o all_o that_o do_v any_o of_o they_o any_o wrong_n thus_o much_o for_o this_o point_n and_o thus_o much_o also_o for_o all_o the_o argument_n whereby_o i_o think_v good_a to_o lay_v forth_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o dignity_n of_o god_n child_n chap._n xxxi_o of_o the_o use_n of_o the_o former_a doctrine_n concern_v the_o dignity_n of_o god_n child_n it_o remain_v now_o according_a to_o my_o order_n before_o insinuate_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o to_o apply_v and_o press_v they_o then_o it_o be_v fit_a for_o i_o to_o do_v in_o this_o treatise_n theseuse_n be_v general_o of_o two_o sort_n viz._n either_o common_a to_o all_o even_o to_o the_o wicked_a as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n or_o special_a either_o to_o the_o wicked_a alone_o or_o to_o the_o godly_a alone_o touch_v common_a use_n this_o doctrine_n first_o of_o all_o serve_v to_o correct_v the_o base_a opinion_n that_o most_o man_n have_v conceive_v of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o to_o teach_v we_o to_o think_v and_o esteem_v of_o they_o according_a to_o those_o thing_n before_o speak_v all_o man_n for_o the_o most_o part_n regard_v man_n more_o according_a to_o their_o state_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v according_a to_o their_o riches_n to_o their_o honour_n and_o credit_n with_o great_a man_n in_o the_o world_n to_o their_o power_n and_o authority_n for_o do_v of_o worldly_a matter_n all_o man_n i_o say_v for_o the_o most_o part_n do_v more_o regard_v man_n according_a to_o these_o thing_n then_o according_a to_o their_o adoption_n according_a to_o their_o grace_n whereby_o they_o show_v forth_o their_o adoption_n and_o according_a to_o that_o estimation_n in_o which_o the_o say_a grace_n accompany_v adoption_n do_v declare_v they_o to_o be_v with_o god_n himself_o neither_o be_v this_o the_o fault_n only_o of_o natural_a man_n such_o as_o be_v not_o the_o child_n of_o god_n themselves_o but_o even_o sometime_o of_o they_o that_o be_v themselves_o regenerate_v and_o seal_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n even_o they_o i_o say_v do_v not_o so_o regard_v one_o another_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v in_o respect_n of_o their_o adoption_n yea_o the_o child_n of_o god_n do_v often_o time_n think_v the_o more_o base_o of_o themselves_o and_o be_v the_o more_o deject_a in_o their_o own_o heart_n because_o they_o be_v so_o little_o regard_v by_o other_o but_o since_o we_o have_v hear_v before_o how_o honourable_a their_o state_n and_o condition_n be_v and_o how_o god_n have_v most_o high_o dignify_v and_o advance_v they_o why_o shall_v they_o not_o be_v so_o regard_v of_o other_o why_o shall_v they_o not_o so_o esteem_v of_o themselves_o not_o any_o whit_n to_o puff_n themselves_o up_o and_o to_o make_v themselves_o to_o set_v up_o their_o bristle_n as_o it_o be_v with_o contempt_n against_o any_o other_o but_o rather_o to_o comfort_v themselves_o the_o more_o against_o such_o contempt_n disgrace_n and_o indignity_n as_o they_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o world_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o other_o this_o use_n the_o apostle_n james_n commend_v when_o he_o exhort_v not_o to_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o respect_n of_o person_n or_o to_o esteem_v of_o man_n according_a to_o their_o ccstly_a apparel_n or_o outward_a countenance_n which_o they_o do_v bear_v in_o the_o world_n but_o according_a to_o their_o riches_n of_o faith_n and_o according_a to_o their_o in_o heritance_n in_o the_o kingdom_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o they_o that_o love_v he_o james_n 2._o 1._o etc._n etc._n under_o this_o opinion_n i_o comprehend_v also_o love_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o honour_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n agreeable_a to_o the_o say_a opinion_n for_o so_o much_o james_n signify_v in_o the_o placâ—_n before_o allege_v by_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n inrespect_n of_o person_n which_o appear_v plain_o by_o his_o word_n immediate_o follow_v viz._n for_o if_o there_o come_v into_o your_o company_n say_v he_o a_o man_n with_o a_o gold_n ring_n and_o in_o good_a apparel_n and_o there_o come_v in_o also_o a_o poor_a man_n in_o vile_a raiment_n and_o you_o have_v respect_n unto_o â—im_n that_o wear_v gay_a clothing_n and_o you_o say_v unto_o he_o sit_v thou_o here_o in_o a_o good_a place_n and_o sâ—y_o unto_o the_o poor_a stand_v thou_o here_o or_o sit_v here_o under_o my_o footstool_n these_o word_n i_o say_v of_o the_o apostle_n do_v plain_o show_v that_o he_o reprove_v not_o only_o a_o base_a opinion_n inward_o of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o also_o the_o outward_a abase_v and_o disgrace_v of_o they_o by_o prefer_v man_n before_o they_o according_a to_o their_o riches_n and_o costly_a apparel_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o james_n write_v not_o to_o heathen_a man_n nor_o to_o mere_a natural_n but_o to_o they_o who_o god_n of_o his_o own_o will_n have_v beget_v with_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n to_o be_v as_o the_o first_o fruit_n of_o his_o creature_n chap._n 1._o 18._o thereby_o show_v that_o it_o be_v a_o fault_n not_o only_o among_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n too_o light_o both_o in_o their_o judgment_n and_o in_o their_o affection_n and_o also_o in_o their_o outward_a carriage_n to_o regard_v the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o also_o in_o they_o that_o be_v of_o the_o same_o father_n and_o have_v the_o same_o in_o heart_n ance_n and_o this_o indeed_o in_o these_o day_n be_v a_o fault_n not_o only_o among_o profane_a man_n that_o contemn_v all_o goodness_n nor_o among_o papist_n and_o profess_a atheist_n but_o also_o among_o professor_n themselves_o even_o of_o the_o best_a sort_n viz._n too_o much_o to_o esteem_v the_o gay_a man_n of_o the_o world_n and_o such_o as_o be_v gentleman_n bear_v and_o have_v good_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a and_o despiser_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o too_o base_o to_o esteem_v and_o too_o little_a to_o regard_v the_o most_o apparent_a child_n of_o god_n know_v to_o be_v virtuous_a and_o show_v many_o token_n that_o they_o be_v turn_v from_o darkness_n to_o light_n and_o from_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n unto_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o inheritance_n
