endeavour_v to_o bring_v in_o among_o they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o keep_v close_o to_o that_o pure_a and_o primitive_a doctrine_n which_o they_o at_o first_o receive_v from_o hence_o we_o may_v consider_v a_o double_a obligation_n lie_v upon_o they_o 1._o to_o keep_v steadfast_a to_o that_o faith_n which_o they_o first_o receive_v without_o be_v seduce_v from_o it_o by_o the_o art_n of_o deceiver_n who_o be_v then_o busy_a among_o they_o 2._o to_o live_v according_a to_o it_o by_o make_v that_o faith_n the_o principle_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n and_o so_o walk_v in_o receive_v christ_n jesus_n the_o lord_n for_o thereby_o they_o declare_v that_o they_o receive_v he_o as_o the_o christ_n i._n e._n as_o he_o who_o be_v anoint_v of_o the_o father_n to_o teach_v and_o instruct_v his_o church_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o adhere_v to_o his_o doctrine_n there_o be_v no_o other_o who_o the_o father_n have_v seal_v and_o appoint_v to_o declare_v his_o rule_n what_o be_v the_o true_a and_o genuine_a doctrine_n of_o christ_n which_o himself_o deliver_v for_o 1._o the_o false_a teacher_n among_o they_o pretend_v to_o deliver_v the_o true_a doctrine_n of_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o the_o apostle_n 2._o that_o which_o they_o at_o first_o receive_v be_v no_o certain_a rule_n for_o the_o false_a teacher_n may_v have_v be_v before_o they_o and_o first_o possession_n give_v no_o title_n in_o religion_n 3._o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o put_v the_o whole_a trial_n mere_o upon_o their_o judgement_n or_o memory_n or_o capacity_n viz._n what_o they_o think_v or_o remember_v be_v at_o first_o teach_v they_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ._n for_o it_o be_v very_o possible_a for_o they_o to_o have_v mistake_v or_o to_o have_v according_a to_o the_o skill_n and_o excellency_n of_o their_o teacher_n for_o the_o hearer_n of_o christ_n himself_o although_o he_o speak_v as_o never_o man_n speak_v yet_o do_v very_o often_o mistake_v his_o meaning_n and_o at_o one_o time_n so_o remarkable_o that_o although_o he_o take_v care_n to_o rectify_v their_o misapprehension_n yet_o it_o be_v say_v from_o that_o time_n many_o of_o his_o disciple_n 66._o go_v back_o and_o walk_v no_o more_o with_o he_o so_o that_o the_o high_a infallibility_n in_o the_o teacher_n do_v not_o prevent_v the_o possibility_n or_o the_o danger_n of_o mistake_v in_o the_o hearer_n and_o whatsoever_o any_o vain_o pretend_v nothing_o can_v do_v it_o but_o transfuse_v the_o spirit_n of_o infallibility_n into_o all_o if_o we_o look_v over_o the_o apostolical_a church_n while_o they_o be_v under_o the_o care_n and_o conduct_v of_o a_o infallible_a spirit_n yet_o this_o do_v not_o prevent_v their_o run_n into_o great_a error_n and_o mistake_v that_o time_n when_o its_o faith_n be_v speak_v of_o throughout_o the_o world_n yet_o there_o be_v 8._o dissension_n and_o difference_n there_o and_o such_o as_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o doctrine_n which_o be_v deliver_v and_o st._n paul_n bid_v they_o to_o mark_v such_o which_o cause_v they_o 17._o he_o do_v not_o say_v it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o introduce_v any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o have_v learn_v by_o tradition_n from_o the_o apostle_n but_o he_o not_o only_o suppose_v it_o very_o possible_a but_o he_o bid_v they_o have_v a_o cephas_n and_o of_o christ_n himself_o and_o yet_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o so_o many_o infallible_a teacher_n they_o have_v like_a to_o have_v lose_v all_o their_o faith_n as_o one_o of_o they_o tell_v they_o how_o say_v some_o among_o 14._o you_o there_o be_v no_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a and_o if_o christ_n be_v not_o rise_v then_o be_v our_o preach_a vain_a and_o your_o faith_n be_v also_o vain_a can_v not_o they_o remember_v to_o day_n what_o be_v teach_v they_o yesterday_o and_o so_o what_o the_o apostle_n at_o first_o preach_v to_o they_o the_o church_n of_o galatia_n have_v such_o a_o opinion_n of_o st._n paul_n upon_o his_o first_o preach_v the_o gospel_n among_o they_o that_o they_o receive_v he_o as_o a_o angel_n of_o god_n even_o as_o 14._o christ_n jesus_n yet_o present_o after_o he_o say_v be_o i_o therefore_o become_v your_o enemy_n because_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o truth_n what!_o of_o a_o angel_n of_o god_n or_o of_o one_o receive_v as_o christ_n and_o offend_v he_o ii_o how_o necessary_a it_o be_v in_o order_n to_o true_a repentance_n to_o form_v a_o fix_a and_o steady_a resolution_n to_o go_v through_o with_o it_o i_o will_v arise_v and_o go_v etc._n etc._n first_o what_o ground_n a_o sinner_n have_v to_o encourage_v he_o to_o repent_v or_o to_o make_v application_n to_o his_o father_n in_o order_n to_o forgiveness_n since_o he_o be_v convince_v he_o have_v so_o just_o offend_v he_o for_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o circumstance_n here_o mention_v he_o have_v no_o such_o reason_n to_o hope_v to_o be_v receive_v into_o favour_n upon_o such_o easy_a term_n as_o be_v here_o express_v for_o 1._o he_o have_v wilful_o forsake_v his_o father_n house_n without_o any_o just_a cause_n of_o complaint_n of_o any_o hard_a usage_n there_o 2._o he_o have_v embrace_v such_o a_o course_n of_o life_n which_o he_o know_v be_v displease_v to_o he_o live_v riotous_o and_o disorderly_o in_o a_o way_n contrary_a to_o his_o will._n 3._o he_o never_o think_v of_o return_v home_o till_o mere_a necessity_n force_v he_o till_o hunger_n and_o poverty_n make_v he_o come_v to_o himself_o and_o what_o can_v be_v more_o disoblige_v to_o a_o father_n than_o such_o circumstance_n as_o these_o 1._o his_o father_n never_o force_v he_o from_o home_n nor_o make_v his_o condition_n uneasy_a there_o our_o saviour_n here_o represent_v almighty_a god_n as_o deal_v with_o mankind_n like_o a_o tender_a and_o indulgent_a father_n and_o not_o like_o a_o severe_a and_o hard_a master_n his_o law_n be_v intend_v for_o our_o good_a and_o not_o for_o his_o own_o advantage_n there_o be_v no_o duty_n of_o we_o towards_o god_n or_o ourselves_o or_o other_o but_o be_v found_v on_o this_o relation_n to_o god_n as_o a_o father_n to_o mankind_n nothing_o can_v be_v more_o reasonable_a in_o general_a than_o that_o the_o father_n shall_v order_v and_o direct_v his_o child_n and_o give_v such_o rule_n which_o be_v fit_v for_o they_o to_o observe_v and_o if_o we_o examine_v the_o particular_a law_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o dictate_v of_o reason_n as_o to_o good_a and_o evil_a we_o shall_v find_v they_o very_o agreeable_a to_o god_n paternal_a government_n what_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n to_o god_n but_o ask_v daily_a blessing_n of_o our_o heavenly_a father_n what_o be_v our_o thanksgiving_n but_o a_o solemn_a own_v his_o paternal_a care_n and_o bounty_n towards_o we_o and_o in_o these_o two_o the_o main_a duty_n of_o natural_a religion_n consist_v the_o neglect_v whereof_o be_v such_o a_o disrespect_n to_o our_o heavenly_a father_n as_o be_v not_o consistent_a with_o our_o believe_v he_o to_o be_v so_o for_o as_o god_n himself_o argue_v in_o the_o prophet_n a_o son_n honour_v his_o father_n and_o a_o servant_n 6._o his_o master_n if_o then_o i_o be_v a_o father_n where_o be_v my_o honour_n and_o if_o i_o be_v a_o master_n where_o be_v my_o fear_n god_n be_v a_o father_n by_o the_o right_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n but_o he_o be_v a_o master_n to_o the_o jew_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o bondage_n of_o the_o law_n and_o as_o there_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n on_o that_o account_n in_o they_o which_o incline_v they_o to_o a_o more_o servile_a fear_n so_o there_o aught_o to_o have_v be_v a_o natural_a spirit_n of_o adoption_n towards_o god_n as_o their_o supreme_a creator_n and_o father_n which_o shall_v excite_v all_o man_n to_o such_o a_o dutiful_a love_n such_o a_o reverential_a esteem_n such_o a_o mixture_n of_o awe_n and_o kindness_n as_o be_v in_o child_n towards_o their_o parent_n yea_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v much_o great_a than_o that_o can_v be_v suppose_v because_o the_o distance_n be_v infinite_a between_o god_n and_o we_o and_o our_o dependence_n more_o immediate_a and_o necessary_a and_o there_o be_v in_o he_o a_o concurrence_n of_o all_o perfection_n which_o may_v cause_v in_o we_o the_o high_a esteem_n and_o the_o humble_a adoration_n there_o be_v a_o unquestionable_a duty_n owe_v by_o child_n to_o their_o earthly_a parent_n but_o how_o much_o rather_o 〈◊〉_d say_v the_o apostle_n ought_v we_o to_o be_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o father_n of_o spirit_n the_o father_n of_o our_o flesh_n may_v be_v very_o kind_a but_o not_o wise_a in_o their_o love_n or_o wise_a and_o not_o so_o kind_a or_o they_o may_v be_v both_o wise_a and_o kind_a but_o not_o able_a to_o help_v their_o child_n they_o may_v love_v and_o pity_n and_o pray_v for_o they_o when_o they_o be_v in_o misery_n or_o sickness_n and_o pain_n but_o after_o all_o they_o be_v unable_a to_o relieve_v they_o for_o the_o most_o indulgent_a father_n when_o his_o bowel_n yearn_v and_o his_o heart_n be_v ready_a to_o break_v at_o the_o sight_n of_o a_o child_n lie_v under_o the_o agony_n of_o death_n be_v not_o able_a to_o give_v a_o moment_n respite_n to_o the_o terrible_a pang_n which_o he_o can_v neither_o behold_v nor_o abate_v but_o our_o heavenly_a father_n have_v not_o only_o infinite_a wisdom_n but_o infinite_a kindness_n and_o power_n and_o where_o all_o these_o be_v join_v together_o what_o honour_n what_o love_n what_o fear_n be_v due_a unto_o he_o although_o there_o be_v defect_n in_o their_o parent_n yet_o child_n be_v still_o bind_v to_o obey_v they_o and_o to_o show_v a_o mighty_a regard_n and_o reverence_n towards_o they_o but_o here_o it_o be_v so_o much_o otherwise_o that_o if_o we_o can_v conceive_v ourselves_o without_o this_o relation_n to_o god_n yet_o his_o perfection_n be_v so_o many_o so_o great_a so_o infinite_a as_o to_o deserve_v and_o require_v our_o utmost_a veneration_n the_o prodigal_a son_n can_v then_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o complain_v of_o the_o duty_n which_o he_o owe_v to_o his_o father_n and_o be_v it_o not_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o appoint_v the_o order_n of_o his_o family_n and_o to_o expect_v that_o his_o child_n shall_v behave_v themselves_o therein_o as_o become_v the_o relation_n they_o stand_v in_o to_o himself_o and_o to_o one_o another_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v a_o decent_a regard_n to_o themselves_o in_o sobriety_n temperance_n command_v of_o their_o passion_n and_o care_n of_o their_o word_n that_o they_o shall_v behave_v themselves_o towards_o their_o brethren_n with_o sincerity_n kindness_n and_o justice_n which_o comprehend_v all_o the_o duty_n we_o owe_v to_o one_o another_o and_o what_o now_o be_v there_o in_o all_o this_o that_o the_o prodigal_n can_v have_v any_o cause_n to_o complain_v of_o or_o that_o shall_v make_v his_o father_n house_n so_o uneasy_a to_o he_o but_o his_o father_n have_v just_a cause_n to_o be_v provoke_v when_o his_o wise_a counsel_n and_o prudent_a care_n and_o constant_a kindness_n and_o righteous_a government_n be_v so_o much_o slight_v and_o despise_v by_o a_o disobedient_a and_o ungrateful_a son_n who_o have_v so_o little_a sense_n of_o his_o duty_n or_o his_o interest_n as_o to_o be_v weary_a of_o be_v so_o well_o at_o home_n and_o therefore_o impatient_o desire_v to_o find_v out_o new_a method_n of_o live_v well_o as_o he_o then_o think_v when_o the_o best_a order_n of_o his_o father_n family_n be_v become_v so_o displease_v to_o he_o 2._o but_o what_o be_v these_o new_a and_o fine_a
yet_o take_v altogether_o our_o saviour_n tell_v they_o they_o ought_v to_o watch_v and_o pray_v that_o they_o enter_v not_o into_o temptation_n and_o he_o give_v the_o reason_n for_o it_o in_o the_o follow_a word_n the_o spirit_n indeed_o be_v willing_a but_o the_o flesh_n be_v weak_a 2._o in_o which_o word_n he_o give_v a_o account_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o inconstancy_n and_o insufficiency_n of_o good_a resolution_n viz._n that_o although_o the_o spirit_n be_v willing_a yet_o there_o be_v something_o we_o carry_v about_o we_o which_o weaken_v our_o best_a resolution_n and_o betray_v we_o into_o temptation_n our_o flesh_n be_v weak_a which_o be_v so_o near_o we_o as_o to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o ourselves_o make_v our_o case_n more_o dangerous_a and_o enforce_v the_o necessity_n of_o watchfulness_n and_o prayer_n but_o here_o arise_v one_o of_o the_o most_o useful_a necessary_a and_o important_a case_n that_o relate_v to_o practical_a christianity_n which_o i_o shall_v first_o set_v down_o in_o its_o full_a force_n and_o then_o endeavour_v to_o clear_v it_o the_o case_n be_v this_o how_o far_o and_o in_o what_o circumstance_n the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n do_v lessen_v the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v by_o it_o if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o extenuation_n of_o the_o sin_n why_o do_v our_o saviour_n mention_v it_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n and_o if_o it_o be_v than_o these_o inconvenience_n follow_v 1._o it_o seem_v to_o abate_v the_o necessity_n of_o our_o care_n and_o watchfulness_n if_o the_o sin_n be_v lessen_v through_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n which_o be_v unavoidable_a in_o this_o imperfect_a state_n 2._o it_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o fair_a plea_n and_o excuse_v for_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n for_o 1._o the_o original_a inclination_n to_o sin_n in_o mankind_n come_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o very_a frame_n of_o humane_a nature_n be_v such_o as_o expose_v they_o to_o continual_a temptation_n there_o be_v a_o natural_a combat_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n for_o the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v and_o all_o mankind_n find_v it_o too_o true_a now_o 17._o wherever_o the_o flesh_n be_v there_o be_v inclination_n agreeable_a to_o it_o and_o these_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o mind_n all_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n will_v appear_v to_o come_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n 2._o the_o frequent_a commission_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n will_v be_v lay_v upon_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n for_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n do_v not_o sin_v out_o of_o defiance_n to_o god_n or_o his_o law_n or_o with_o a_o obstinate_a resolution_n to_o sin_n for_o they_o know_v their_o duty_n and_o wish_v they_o can_v perform_v it_o but_o alas_o the_o flesh_n be_v too_o hard_a for_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o they_o have_v many_o conviction_n in_o their_o mind_n many_o good_a purpose_n and_o serious_a resolution_n at_o some_o time_n and_o if_o they_o do_v sin_n it_o be_v not_o with_o their_o whole_a will_n for_o they_o have_v great_a struggle_n and_o check_n of_o conscience_n within_o even_o while_o they_o commit_v those_o sin_n make_v amends_o for_o the_o miscarriage_n of_o their_o life_n by_o diligence_n in_o religious_a duty_n this_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o pharisaism_n i._n e._n of_o hypocrisy_n among_o the_o jew_n that_o he_o will_v easy_o pass_v by_o other_o fault_n and_o no_o doubt_n one_o of_o their_o great_a quarrel_n against_o our_o saviour_n be_v deliver_v the_o contrary_a doctrine_n that_o god_n prefer_v
