as_o there_o be_v a_o real_a difference_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o also_o in_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n in_o hypocrite_n and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n for_o the_o one_o put_v confidence_n in_o himself_o and_o the_o other_o in_o jehovah_n this_o be_v the_o first_o difference_n of_o sanctification_n 2._o there_o be_v difference_n also_o in_o the_o rule_n whereby_o they_o be_v guide_v though_o both_o seek_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o take_v delight_n in_o that_o insomuch_o as_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o difference_n they_o there_o yet_o a_o great_a difference_n there_o be_v in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o word_n the_o one_o be_v so_o confident_a of_o the_o strength_n and_o comfort_n that_o he_o have_v in_o the_o word_n as_o he_o will_v be_v to_o be_v whereas_o the_o dear_a servant_n of_o god_n be_v slow_a to_o see_v so_o much_o goodness_n in_o themselves_o they_o see_v so_o much_o corruption_n but_o you_o will_v say_v object_n a_o hypocrite_n can_v aim_v at_o god_n as_o his_o last_o end_n but_o will_v out-shoot_a god_n in_o his_o own_o bow_n and_o at_o the_o high_a he_o seek_v no_o more_o but_o his_o own_o salvation_n without_o respect_n unto_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o it_o it_o be_v true_a answ_n and_o in_o time_n will_v appear_v that_o every_o hypocrite_n think_v to_o outreach_v god_n in_o all_o the_o gift_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v but_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n it_o be_v much_o that_o a_o hypocrite_n will_v do_v and_o so_o much_o that_o a_o poor_a christian_a will_v be_v put_v to_o much_o exercise_n to_o find_v a_o difference_n between_o himself_o and_o they_o jehu_n do_v not_o only_o think_v that_o he_o have_v zeal_n for_o the_o lord_n as_o he_o say_v come_v see_v my_o zeal_n for_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n but_o good_a jonadab_n likewise_o do_v so_o persuade_v himself_o and_o therefore_o do_v ready_o join_v with_o he_o in_o his_o reformation_n and_o when_o he_o proclaim_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o baal_n he_o think_v that_o jehu_n will_v do_v no_o harm_n to_o himself_o in_o the_o temple_n of_o baal_n thus_o therefore_o sometime_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v because_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v for_o a_o long_a time_n find_v all_o his_o own_o end_v attain_v in_o seek_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n as_o jehu_n do_v but_o but_o in_o conclusion_n when_o a_o man_n and_o his_o own_o honour_n must_v part_v then_o either_o he_o must_v hold_v to_o his_o own_o glory_n or_o else_o he_o must_v neglect_v it_o and_o keep_v he_o close_o to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n what_o can_v i_o tell_v but_o that_o i_o may_v shake_v hand_n with_o and_o bid_v farewell_n unto_o god_n glory_n when_o he_o and_o i_o lie_v at_o stake_n together_o but_o may_v not_o a_o man_n perceive_v a_o plain_a difference_n when_o it_o come_v to_o persecution_n object_n no_o answ_n persecution_n will_v not_o clear_v the_o difference_n for_o though_o the_o stony_a ground_n indeed_o fall_v off_o upon_o point_n of_o persecution_n yet_o the_o thorny_a soil_n do_v not_o so_o many_o papist_n have_v die_v for_o their_o religion_n and_o how_o much_o more_o than_o may_v some_o hypocrite_n do_v it_o for_o how_o shall_v we_o keep_v it_o not_o by_o our_o own_o wit_n and_o wisdom_n careful_a watchfulness_n and_o faithfulness_n though_o such_o thing_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v want_v but_o the_o charge_n be_v keep_v those_o thing_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o gift_n to_o be_v fit_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o maintain_v that_o which_o god_n give_v we_o and_o though_o adam_n gift_n be_v in_o perfection_n yet_o not_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v they_o for_o he_o they_o all_o fly_v from_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o leave_v he_o naked_a and_o desperate_a therefore_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o lord_n give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v strong_a possession_n in_o his_o servant_n against_o the_o strong_a man_n arm_v this_o be_v the_o first_o ground_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o we_o 2._o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o act_v the_o gift_n give_v to_o we_o and_o enable_v they_o in_o we_o for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o keep_v possession_n do_v derive_v continue_v strength_n into_o our_o faith_n which_o put_v life_n into_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v how_o love_n and_o patience_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n do_v work_v the_o holy_a ghost_n stir_v up_o faith_n to_o look_v unto_o christ_n who_o return_v strength_n by_o his_o spirit_n unto_o faith_n and_o so_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o christians_o when_o the_o lord_n first_o work_v these_o gift_n in_o they_o not_o one_o of_o a_o thousand_o but_o they_o think_v they_o be_v in_o a_o sad_a and_o fearful_a condition_n and_o so_o they_o be_v very_o uncomfortable_a but_o now_o leave_v that_o we_o shall_v always_o mistake_v that_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v free_o give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 2.12_o he_o indeed_o take_v his_o own_o time_n to_o discover_v it_o to_o some_o soon_o to_o some_o late_a but_o this_o be_v his_o intendment_n that_o he_o may_v honour_v his_o grace_n unto_o we_o by_o all_o the_o rich_a and_o gracious_a gift_n which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o he_o do_v also_o reveal_v unto_o we_o the_o confidence_n that_o they_o have_v in_o abraham_n covenant_n and_o temple_n and_o tabernacle_n and_o such_o thing_n be_v burn_v up_o and_o so_o they_o have_v no_o root_n leave_v they_o to_o stand_v upon_o and_o this_o be_v one_o thing_n intend_v by_o the_o root_n but_o 2._o there_o be_v something_o more_o in_o it_o for_o with_o this_o spirit_n of_o burn_a the_o lord_n by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o spirit_n do_v cut_v we_o off_o from_o any_o power_n of_o our_o own_o natural_a gift_n or_o part_n and_o spiritual_a gift_n also_o whereby_o we_o think_v to_o lay_v hold_n on_o jesus_n christ_n and_o we_o be_v cut_v off_o hereby_o from_o all_o that_o confidence_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o sufficiency_n when_o once_o the_o lord_n intend_v to_o bring_v a_o soul_n unto_o himself_o for_o there_o be_v a_o usual_a prefidence_n that_o we_o have_v of_o our_o own_o state_n though_o the_o lord_n have_v cut_v we_o off_o from_o hope_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o our_o parent_n and_o from_o boast_v of_o his_o ordinance_n yet_o we_o think_v there_o be_v some_o power_n still_o leave_v we_o and_o therefore_o we_o hope_v and_o will_v seek_v that_o the_o lord_n may_v reveal_v himself_o to_o we_o in_o mercy_n and_o peace_n but_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v near_a unto_o we_o he_o will_v show_v we_o how_o unable_a we_o be_v to_o take_v up_o the_o least_o good_a resolution_n we_o shall_v be_v like_o bruise_a reed_n and_o not_o find_v ourselves_o able_a to_o hold_v up_o our_o head_n for_o christ_n come_v to_o seek_v and_o to_o save_v that_o which_o be_v lose_v so_o that_o christ_n will_v not_o seek_v we_o until_o we_o be_v lose_v and_o therefore_o he_o say_v mat._n 16.24_o if_o any_o man_n will_v come_v after_o i_o let_v he_o deny_v himself_o and_o follow_v i_o and_o this_o spirit_n of_o burn_a do_v burn_v up_o all_o our_o branch_n also_o how_o fair_a and_o green_a soever_o they_o have_v be_v all_o our_o fasting_n and_o humiliation_n and_o alms-deed_n and_o prayer_n such_o thing_n as_o the_o pharisee_n much_o boast_a in_o mat._n 6.1_o 2_o 3._o etc._n etc._n but_o these_o thing_n be_v all_o burn_v up_o this_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n partly_o as_o it_o work_v a_o tremble_a and_o fear_n and_o partly_o as_o it_o work_v to_o the_o burn_a up_o of_o all_o the_o hope_n that_o we_o have_v in_o ourselves_o there_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n i_o confess_v that_o only_o work_v unto_o fear_n and_o now_o all_o the_o hope_n be_v that_o a_o man_n set_v upon_o reformation_n but_o if_o the_o lord_n love_v a_o man_n soul_n he_o will_v not_o let_v he_o stay_v there_o but_o go_v further_o with_o he_o and_o show_v he_o that_o his_o prayer_n &_o fasting_n be_v all_o empty_a and_o fall_v short_a of_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n ay_o but_o yet_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o quite_o out_o of_o hope_n though_o the_o law_n can_v save_v i_o if_o it_o can_v i_o must_v get_v i_o to_o jesus_n christ_n then_o and_o lie_v hold_v upon_o he_o for_o salvation_n as_o if_o all_o be_v to_o be_v have_v by_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n if_o once_o he_o can_v lay_v hold_n upon_o he_o and_o nothing_o else_o be_v require_v but_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o my_o lay_n hold_v upon_o he_o i_o see_v plain_o say_v a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n that_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n in_o i_o as_o have_v be_v right_o observe_v &_o therefore_o he_o trust_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o jesus_n christ_n but_o now_o if_o the_o lord_n love_v thy_o soul_n he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thou_o there_o to_o rest_n the_o spirit_n of_o burn_a will_v not_o leave_v thou_o so_o how_o come_v thou_o by_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n why_o thou_o take_v it_o up_o of_o thy_o own_o accord_n thou_o think_v all_o thy_o gift_n and_o duty_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o therefore_o now_o thou_o will_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v it_o so_o easy_a a_o matter_n can_v any_o man_n come_v unto_o christ_n except_o the_o father_n draw_v lose_v so_o long_o as_o it_o have_v any_o root_n or_o power_n in_o itself_o though_o i_o can_v work_v i_o will_v believe_v and_o if_o i_o can_v believe_v i_o will_v wait_v that_o i_o may_v believe_v and_o so_o here_o be_v still_o the_o old_a root_n of_o adam_n leave_v alive_a in_o we_o whereby_o man_n seek_v to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n whereof_o the_o apostle_n paul_n often_o make_v mention_n this_o old_a root_n put_v forth_o itself_o and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v whole_o for_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n alone_o and_o all_o because_o there_o be_v a_o spring_n of_o adam_n still_o in_o the_o soul_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v marvellous_a apt_a to_o have_v hope_n and_o confidence_n more_o or_o less_o from_o some_o virtue_n or_o measure_n and_o so_o we_o be_v all_o one_o mystical_a body_n and_o i_o can_v tell_v how_o better_a to_o compare_v it_o then_o to_o a_o musical_a instrument_n wherein_o though_o there_o be_v many_o pipe_n yet_o one_o blast_n of_o the_o bellows_n put_v breath_n into_o they_o all_o so_o that_o all_o of_o they_o at_o once_o break_v forth_o into_o a_o kind_n of_o melody_n and_o give_v a_o pleasant_a sound_n to_o the_o ear_n of_o those_o that_o stand_v by_o all_o of_o they_o do_v make_v but_o one_o instrument_n and_o one_o sound_n and_o yet_o variety_n of_o music_n so_o be_v this_o very_a case_n look_v at_o all_o the_o live_a member_n of_o christ_n they_o be_v all_o compact_a together_o and_o set_v into_o one_o stock_n and_o root_n by_o which_o mean_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o though_o they_o be_v many_o thousand_o yet_o they_o all_o make_v a_o melodious_a harmony_n in_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n therefore_o for_o the_o combine_a of_o we_o into_o the_o unity_n of_o one_o spirit_n necessary_a it_o be_v that_o the_o same_o spirit_n that_o breathe_v in_o the_o humane_a nature_n of_o christ_n shall_v breathe_v in_o we_o all_o and_o though_o the_o divine_a nature_n of_o christ_n be_v god_n the_o humane_a nature_n be_v finite_a and_o yet_o have_v the_o spirit_n above_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o this_o same_o spirit_n do_v act_n and_o guide_v and_o move_v all_o our_o affair_n in_o he_o and_o which_o be_v wonderful_a it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o same_o spirit_n breathe_v in_o christ_n and_o in_o we_o we_o have_v not_o only_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o do_v one_o duty_n but_o he_o do_v concur_v with_o we_o in_o all_o spiritual_a duty_n which_o we_o undertake_v according_a to_o he_o for_o without_o he_o we_o can_v do_v nothing_o joh._n 15.5_o this_o be_v the_o first_o reason_n of_o the_o inhabitation_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o keep_v alive_a spiritual_a union_n between_o christ_n and_o we_o therefore_o be_v there_o one_o spirit_n in_o we_o all_o second_o reas_n 2_o another_o end_n of_o this_o inhabitation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v to_o keep_v possession_n for_o the_o lord_n in_o our_o heart_n against_o that_o we_o have_v receive_v he_o blast_v all_o the_o precious_a gift_n that_o adam_n have_v receive_v which_o be_v more_o perfect_a in_o degree_n than_o any_o we_o receive_v and_o yet_o when_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n and_o gate_n of_o hell_n be_v band_v together_o against_o jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o servant_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n that_o fall_v away_o final_o and_o the_o apostle_n john_n give_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o 1_o joh._n 4.4_o you_o be_v of_o god_n little_a child_n and_o have_v overcome_v they_o because_o great_a be_v he_o that_o be_v in_o you_o than_o he_o that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n neither_o be_v we_o preserve_v by_o faith_n only_o but_o by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n 1_o pet._n 1.5_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v that_o set_v faith_n a-work_o and_o christ_n it_o be_v that_o set_v the_o spirit_n a-work_o to_o keep_v we_o unto_o his_o heavenly_a kingdom_n and_o from_o this_o possession_n of_o the_o spirit_n there_o come_v a_o garrison_n as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v keep_v in_o our_o heart_n whereby_o our_o soul_n be_v keep_v alive_a so_o that_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o only_o shed_v abroad_o his_o gift_n into_o our_o heart_n but_o he_o keep_v our_o heart_n in_o a_o sweet_a frame_n of_o sanctification_n 2_o tim._n 1.14_o that_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v commit_v to_o thou_o keep_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o that_o goodly_a depositum_fw-la his_o evangelistical_a gift_n that_o do_v accompany_v his_o own_o salvation_n and_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o church_n he_o must_v keep_v it_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o otherwise_o our_o gift_n will_v soon_o vapour_n out_o into_o smoke_n and_o ash_n whether_o it_o be_v faith_n hope_n zeal_n patience_n courage_n or_o whatsoever_o else_o be_v requisite_a for_o the_o salvation_n of_o god_n people_n the_o spirit_n by_o his_o power_n dwell_v in_o we_o act_v and_o preserve_v they_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n rom._n 8.14_o nor_o be_v this_o a_o confine_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n unto_o poor_a house_n of_o clay_n solomon_n temple_n can_v not_o contain_v he_o no_o not_o the_o heaven_n of_o heaven_n he_o dwell_v above_o all_o heaven_n unmeasurable_o yet_o he_o dwell_v also_o with_o he_o that_o be_v of_o a_o humble_a and_o contrite_a spirit_n isa_n 57.15_o though_o it_o be_v a_o poor_a kitchin-boy_n that_o have_v such_o a_o spirit_n he_o dwell_v there_o to_o revive_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o humble_a as_o those_o that_o dwell_v in_o earthly_a house_n there_o indulgence_n of_o the_o most_o high_a that_o dwell_v in_o temple_n make_v without_o hand_n so_o to_o be_v please_v to_o dwell_v in_o the_o son_n and_o daughter_n of_o man_n to_o make_v good_a his_o own_o eternal_a counsel_n for_o their_o salvation_n there_o be_v i_o confess_v also_o some_o kind_n of_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n even_o in_o hypocrite_n that_o
be_v only_o fit_v to_o some_o work_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o only_o attain_v to_o some_o work_n of_o common_a grace_n but_o not_o such_o as_o do_v accompany_v salvation_n you_o will_v find_v this_o difference_n between_o they_o and_o god_n own_o child_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n indeed_o come_v upon_o they_o as_o he_o do_v upon_o saul_n 1_o sam._n 10.10_o so_o that_o he_o prophesy_v and_o more_o than_o so_o he_o do_v sometime_o continue_v with_o they_o for_o a_o season_n and_o so_o journ_v a_o while_n in_o they_o according_a as_o sometime_o it_o be_v say_v jer._n 14.8_o he_o be_v
